4.1 – DEFINITIONS 4.1.1-MINERALS, ROCKS, ORES AND NONMETALLIC MINERALS F. N. EARLL A mineral is a naturally occurring inorganic element or compound. Most minerals are distinctly crystalline in habit, and many commonly occur in well-formed crystals or crystalline aggregates, but a few species are characteristically amorphous or noncrystalline. Nearly 2,000 mineral species are now recognized but, perhaps fortun¬ately, a rather large proportion are rarely encountered. Even so, the application of modern mineral-detection and identification techniques reveals the presence of surprising numbers of mineral species, even in deposits of outwardly simple mineralogy. A rock is an aggregate of grains or crystals of one or more minerals. Some rocks are essentially monomineralic. Thus, limestone consists largely of the mineral calcite, and many sandstones are dominantly quartz. Most rock varieties, however, contain a number of mineral species, and their classification or identification depends upon the minerals present, their relative abundance, and such factors as rock tex¬ture and origin. Ore is defined as an accumulation or deposit of one or more minerals that can be exploited at a profit. The profit criterion commonly is taken somewhat liberally, however, for, although always present, the specific mineral content that constitutes a viable product is transitory. The term ore, usually, but no longer consistently, is restricted to the description of mineral deposits that are of value for their metal content. Nonmetallic deposits, although similar to metallic ores in many respects, generally are valued for the minerals or compounds present, as with rock salt (halite), rather than for individual contained elements, though such minerals as elemental sulfur are of much value. 4.1.2-ROCK TYPES F. N. EARLL Rocks arc grouped tinder three broad headings: (1) igneous rocks formed by the crystallization of magma; (2) sedimentary rocks formed by surface processes of weathering and deposition; and (3) metamorphic rocks, which may have been derived from either of the foregoing, but have undergone important physical and/or chemical changes through the application of heat or pressure, or both. The three groups can he further subdivided for convenient reference. Thus, igneous rocks are described as being abyssal or plutonic if formed at great depth, hypabyssal if formed at intermediate depth, and extrusive or effusive if formed at or on the earth's surface. The sedimentary rock group is similarly subdivided into clastic sediments and chemical precipitates. The clastic sediments form by deposition of preexisting minerals that were released from their place of origin by weathering and were transported to their point of deposition as discrete grains

The efficient and acceptable disposal of fine coal refuse (28MxO) is one of the highest priority problems facing the coal industry today. For many years the established system for the disposal of this fine refuse slurry has been to concentrate the solids in a static thickener and pump the resulting 20-40% solids underflow to lagoons or impoundments. Although this technique has served the coal industry well, increasing environmental concerns and refuse related disasters, such as Buffalo Creek, West Virginia and Aberfan, Wales, Great Britain have resulted in federal and state regulations which now control fine refuse disposal methods. As a consequence of these regulations, the capital costs of constructing, maintaining, and operating regulatory complying impoundments has become in many cases economically unattractive. Areas processing topologies similar to those coal preparation plants of the Appalachians are particularly burdened by these regulations and are consequently turning to alternatives for handling and disposal of their fine coal refuse. The basic requirements of impoundment alternatives as defined by environmental and plant demands are: (1) A relatively solids-free liquid (1000 ppm or less) to serve as plant make-up water in a "closed circuit" system, and (2) a sufficiently dewatered solids product which can be combined with the coarse refuse to form a compactable stable land-fill.

Sotiel mine is situated in the Iberian Pyrite Belt in southern Spain, some 40 km north of the port of Huelva. Although mining operations at the site date back to Roman times, the present mine came into production in 1983 and 5.6 million tonnes of ore had been extracted by 1993. The orebody is volcano-sedimentary and consists of fine grained copper, lead and zinc minerals in massive pyrite surrounded by slates and volcanics. Prior laboratory research had resulted in the synthesis of a new collector, belonging to the MercaptoBenzoOxazole (MBO) class that acts selectively towards Cu and Zn minerals after activation with CuS04. The MethylMercaptoBenzoOxazole (MMBO) version of this collector had been used for the laboratory flotation of Cu minerals and sphalerite activated by CuS04. This resulted in identification of the optimal physicochemical conditions for laboratory-cell flotation of the two minerals from samples of complex sulphide ores, and subsequently the reagent has been tested in the Sotiel plant (Spain). The plant has three flotation sections. With conventional re-agents, the first section yields a Cu concentrate grading 21% with a total recovery of 29%, and the second one yields a 40% Pb concentrate with total recovery of 34% and a 47% Zn concentrate with total recovery of 78%. Application of the new synthetic reagent in the copper and zinc circuits produces a more selective process with a decrease in re- agent concentration grade and recovery are increased by 2 and 9 points respectively in the case of Cu and by 1 and 3 points where Zn is concerned. Moreover, the penalty elements in the Cu concentrate are halved.

"During the past decade, column flotation cells have become widely accepted for upgrading ultrafine sulfide ores. However, the use of columns has been widely relegated to cleaner circuits due to their comparatively high selectivity derived from the use of wash water dispersed over a deep froth. High tonnage rates and low feed grades make using column technology in roughing and scavenger stages challenging due to the resulting size of the needed equipment. To specifically address this challenge, a new high-intensity flotation system known as the StackCell™ was developed. This technology makes use of a novel pre-aeration method coupled with froth washing to simultaneously provide improved flotation kinetics and selectivity. The novel aeration system provides efficient bubble-particle contacting thereby shortening the residence time required for particle collection. This article reviews the technical design features of this new flotation technology and presents recent data from in-plant pilot testing in a copper-sulfide application. INTRODUCTION Column flotation cells have become very popular in the minerals processing industry for cleaner circuits due to their ability to produce a high-grade froth concentrate via the use of froth washing (Luttrell et al., 1999; Kohmuench et al., 2004). The use of wash water minimizes the nonselective recovery of ultrafine impurities that are normally entrained into the froth product from conventional flotation machines. On the other hand, the unique design of a column cell typically requires a large tank volume. Column cells must be tall to ensure that the pulp residence time is long enough to offset their inherently slow flotation kinetics and to minimize internal mixing that is detrimental to overall cell performance. The tall design minimizes the total floor space required for the column installation, but substantially increases the foundation load. The large size of the column tank can also create issues during fabrication, transportation and installation. To address these concerns, the engineering team at Eriez Manufacturing developed a next-generation flotation technology called the StackCell?. This high-intensity flotation machine was designed to provide column-like separation performance within a very compact volumetric footprint. This article describes the key working features of this new technology and provides data from recent pilot-scale tests conducted in gold and copper-sulfide applications"

Water is a most remarkable substance, essential for life of all kinds. As well as needing water to survive, man has always used it for agriculture, transportation, recreation, and many other things. When our country was young and inhabited by few people, the streams, rivers, and lakes were able to provide all the clean water needed by man and take away all the wastes created. However, with our growing population and an ever-increasing demand for goods and services, the public, industry, and government at all levels have become acutely aware of the need to manage the nation's water resources more efficiently. Abundant energy from many sources has helped this nation to become the greatest industrial nation in the world. Coal has contributed a major portion of this energy, generating electricity, running railroads, and maintaining national security during wartime. The result has been the highest standard of living in the world and a time of widespread economic prosperity. The use of water in coal mining is somewhat different from its use in most industries. With the exception of water used in cleaning plants, for underground dust control, and for fire protection, most of the water en- countered in coal mining operations serves no useful purpose. In other words, it is an undesirable element and must be removed, otherwise it will interfere with operations, cause potential water quality problems, and may even stop operations by flooding. In the past, removing water from working areas of most mines was usually a fairly simple matter. Pumps with piping were installed at sumps or low spots in the mine and the water was pumped to the surface or to drainage control facilities constructed for the operation. Ditches were often used to collect and drain the water by gravity to the outside or to main sumps for pump discharge. In either case, the water was allowed to flow into the nearest stream or river. The concept of "water is water' was generally accepted without too much concern for what was in the water since low-cost products and services, rather than clean water, were the public demand.

The Bureau of Reclamation's Syar Tunnel project included excavation of a 9.2 kilometer (5.7 mile) long, 3.6 meter (11.8 ft) diameter tunnel through gently dipping sedimentary rocks consisting of shales, siltstones, sandstones and limestone. The tunnel was supported full length with precast concrete invert segments and lightweight steel sets and lagging. Several world records for advance rate were set, including 57 meters (187 ft) in an eight hour shift and 127 meters (417 ft) in a 24 hour day. The tunneling system utilized a remanufactured and modified Robbins hardrock TBM and a 9,280 meter (30,450 ft) long, 61 centimeter (24 inch) wide, continuous conveyor system.

Much has been written recently about the Henderson Mine Project in Colorado being developed by American Metal Climax, Inc. To briefly recap the project, AMAX has an ore body, containing about 300 million tons of proven and probable molybdenum ore which is located under Red Mountain on the eastern slope of the Continental Divide. The mill, however, will be located on the western slope in the Williams Fork Valley where water and space for waste disposal are more available. AMAX will carry the ore by remote controlled trains from a gathering level underground at the mine, through a ten (10) mile tunnel under the Continental Divide and thence along a five (5) mile surface railroad to the mill site. One of the more challenging facets of the project is the western portion of the ten (10) mile tunnel being driven by Dravo Corporation through difficult ground conditions, downgrade, toward the Continental Divide. The tunnel is a 16'-6" wide by 15' high horseshoe, which runs in a straight line and drops at a constant three percent (3%) grade from the West Portal to the ore zone. Dravo's portion is anticipated to be about 6 1/2 miles long and includes permanent pumping stations located every 4,900 linear feet (lf) permanent rectifier stations every 12,5001f, and one (1) 1,560 ventilation shaft. The western portion of the tunnel lies in the Idaho Springs formation, a mixture of gneiss and schist with some granitic intrusions. Toward the Continental Divide a transition into Silver Plume Granite is expected to occur. Preconstruction geologic information indicated the Idaho Springs and Silver Plume formations to be basically competent with some faulted and altered areas. It

"Mine disasters, such as fires and explosions, can create a hazardous atmosphere due to the generation of carbon monoxide (CO). After a mine disaster, contaminated mine air can enter the refuge alternative (RA) as miners enter. Most built-in-place (BIP) RAs use an air delivery system to provide an unlimited supply of breathable air through a borehole which also serves to purge contaminants. In order to determine what levels of contaminants enter the RA, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted testing in NIOSH’s Pittsburgh Experimental Mine using groups of 5, 15, and 30 subjects entering the RA. The experiment used sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) as a tracer gas that was released into the air outside of the BIP RA to establish a uniform concentration. After the human subjects entered the BIP RA, the SF6 levels inside the RA were measured to quantify how much of the tracer gas entered the BIP RA. In tests conducted while the borehole air supply was left off as test subjects entered, interior contaminant levels were less than 3% of the exterior concentration. In tests conducted with the borehole air supply activated as test subjects entered, the interior contaminant levels were measured at less than 2% of the exterior concentration. Considering a mine disaster can result in 10,000 ppm of CO in the mine atmosphere, these percentages indicate that unhealthy CO concentrations that may lead to headaches, dizziness, and loss of judgement can occur in a BIP RA. This information will help mines make decisions concerning air locks, air delivery systems and a determination if purging mechanisms are necessary. INTRODUCTION The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act) was enacted in the wake of three mine explosions/fires that claimed 19 lives that year. Intended to help improve underground coal mine accident preparedness, the MINER Act includes provisions that target mine safety issues in areas such as emergency response planning, adoption of new technology, training and education, and enforcement of mine safety standards (MSHA, 2006). Section 13 of the MINER Act specifically directs the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to provide for research into the effectiveness and viability of RAs for underground coal mines. This mandate culminated in the 2009 adoption of changes to the 30 CFR mining health and safety regulations, requiring underground coal mines to provide RAs capable of maintaining a life-sustaining environment for persons trapped underground. Such RAs can be either pre-fabricated or BIP shelters. The regulatory changes also include provisions establishing requirements for Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) approval of RAs and their components, and among these provisions are numerous criteria for providing a safe, breathable atmosphere within RAs."

Development of the Georgia kaolin industry can be traced to the mineral resource, the adoption of innovative process technologies, and the market growth for kaolin. Georgia kaolin is an abundant and high-quality resource that shows a range of advantageous properties. Technical developments in wet processing, delamination, and calcination allowed production of high-value products. The application of kaolin pigments to the paper industry provided a market that could absorb rapid growth.

In operation of column flotation of fine coal, the smaller bubbles are required to effectively recovery of fine hydrophobic particles. However, smaller size bubbles alone does not ensure an efficient flotation for fine particles. The sufficient available bubble surface area per unit column are essential for effective column flotation. The experiments are conducted in a lab-scale column using two different bubble size distributions and three different particle size distributions for flotation of Pittsburgh No.8 seam coal. The interaction between particle size, aeration rate, feed rate and wash water addition are examined in this investigation to establish the optimal operation conditions for flotation of fine coal. Despite of wide range of operation conditions used in this study, it is found that the experimental data fall in a single characteristic recovery-ash curve for a given bubble size distribution and particle size distribution. The major parameters affect the flotation performance points along -the characteristic recovery-ash curves are aeration rate/frother dosage, feed rate and wash water rate-.

Chemical and structural changes occurring during the roasting of refractory gold ores were investigated. Effect of temperature on oxidation behavior of ores was analyzed using TGA, DTA and X-ray diffraction methods. The experimental results showed that the carbon in the ore has to be oxidized to a minimum value before any appreciable oxidation of sulfur occurs. Oxidation rates as a function of temperature were calculated. Optimum conditions under which a successful roasting of the refractory gold ores can be obtained are discussed.

The purpose of this discussion is to try to offer some suggestions as to how the zinc and lead markets will perform over the balance of the decade, review some of the factors influencing production and come to some conclusions regarding prices. The past 2 years have been simply awful in terms of consumption, prices and overall profitability for the industry. In looking ahead to the year 2,000, it is probably not a bad idea to look back about 20 years to see where we have been and how we got to where we are. Zinc consumption from 1950 to the early 1970's increased steadily and rather nicely at an annual average rate of close to 4.0%. It was starting in the early 1970's that things started to get volatile and at times, difficult for the industry. The general economic boom of the early 70's was marked by annual consumption rates close to 5.0 million tons, a level not seen again for over 10 years. The First Oil shock of 1973-74 was followed by the sharpest consumption drop in memory. In two years, Western World zinc consumption fell 27%. While our chart shows a rather dramatic recovery thereafter, the average annual growth rate since 1970 has only been a rather modest 1.5%.

The construction of a major sewerage scheme requiring 15.3 km of 5.5m excavated diameter tunnel in basalt, mixed and soft ground has been undertaken by the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works. A double shielded Tunnel Boring Machine was selected to excavate 13.7 km of basalt and mixed ground. Advanced methods for recording operational data on the TBM were introduced. Progress to date has shown that the TBM can excavate rock very effectively with a best weekly production of 178.8m; soft ground has been encountered and successfully handled.

INTRODUCTION From the first historical records of the discovery of uranium as an element and the attempted classification of its minerals in the early 18th century-through its first uses in pigmentation and the coloring of glasses and ceramic glazes-until 1939 when it was discovered that the isotope U235, was fissionable, uranium oxide in the form of pitchblende ores and concentrates (produced mainly in Bohemia, Canada, and the former Belgian Congo) in recent times was the source of uranium compounds incidental as byproducts to the recovery of radium from this invariable associated source. In 1938 this byproduct production from pitchblende concentrates was about 471 st of U3O8, with over 90% from Canada and the Belgian Congo and only 25.85 st from carnotite ores in the United States.1 Under the impetus of the Atomic Energy Commission's (AEC now part of the Energy Research Development Administration) domestic and foreign production incentives and buying programs, and as an initial assurance of atomic armament capability of the United States and the Free World, the growth of the uranium mining and milling industry burgeoned from 1952 to 1962. After a short period of decline, in the second decade and in large commitments beyond, it has again extended its capacity to meet ever-increasing fuel demands of atomic power generation by the electric utilities industry. In 1961 the peak production in the United States alone was 17,758 st of U3O8. Peak aggregate domestic and foreign deliveries of 34,581 st of U3O8 to the AEC occurred in 1960.z Canada's maximum delivery of 13,506 st of U308 was made in 1959. These peak and continued productions in the Free World are largely from: the Mesozoic (Jurassic) and Tertiary (Eocene) sandstones in the United States; the quartz pebble conglomerates of Canada and the Witwatersrand; pegmatites, Jurassic limestones, and Precambrian complexes, with less but significant production; the phosphoria, where byproduct production is minor. This uranium production in the form of precipitated concentrates has come from the milling of ores from these sources, both directly and by retreatment of gold cyanidation tailings on the Witwatersrand. Milling of crude ore has followed these processes: conventional crushing and size preparation, ore drying when required, salt roasting for high vanadium ores and byproduct vanadium recovery, carbonate or acid-leaching processes, classification sand-dine separations or countercurrent decantation (CCD) circuits and complete liquid-solids separations, resin-in-pulp (RIP) or liquid-liquid (solvent) ion-ex- change extractions, clarification of pregnant liquors, precipitation, filtration and washing, sodium and vanadium removals, and drying or roasting and packaging of the high-grade, high-purity uranium concentrate commonly referred to as "yellowcake." Coupled with the hazards and control of dust generation incident to conventional crushing and milling operations, more stringent control of airborne respirable and ingestible radioactive particulates and the protection of personnel against definitive external radiation are inherent to uranium milling. Impoundment and control of tailings and other effluents of uranium milling are more restrictive than in conventional practice, be- cause long-term disposal and containment of the uranium series of radionuclides, whether in solution or in solid form, are requisite to uranium milling and are made manadatory under regulatory agencies of government. 2. GEOLOGY AND MINERALOGY OF URANIUM Early Uses and Byproduct Production of Uranium Uranium was discovered by Klaproth in 1789 but had little commercial importance until the discovery of uranium fission by Hahn and Strassman at the close of 1938. The well-known uranium ores of Joachimsthal, Czechoslovakia, the Congo, and the Colorado Plateau were early sources of radium. Minor quantities of uranium were used for small-scale technical and industrial applications, particularly in coloring glass and ceramics, but most of the uranium was discarded. The Colorado ores were also mined later, chiefly for vanadium. Impetus of Armament Capability and Fuel Demands for Atomic Power Following the discovery of atomic fission, uranium became critically important for military applications and, more recently, as a nuclear fuel. Prior to 1966 uranium was acquired in the United States almost solely for use in the weapons program of the AEC. By 1970 the AEC had procured approximately 325,000 st of U3O8 from domestic and foreign sources. Current and future marketability is primarily dependent upon commercial demand for reactor fuel. Steven Tubbs From mine to farm is a long journey for Florida's phosphate, but it is an important one to the American farmer who uses phosphate fertilizers to replenish the soil and produce the crops which eventually wind up on the American dinner table. In this phosphate-food connection, transportation plays a vital life-giving role, a role that is unique because of the large quantities of phosphate produced and the mineral's location in relation to its markets. Florida Leads World Florida is the world's largest phosphate producer, supplying 80% of the nation's and a third of the world's annual total. About 95% of Florida's phosphate goes into agricultural chemicals, with 90% going into fertilizers. Phosphate production is primarily concentrated in west central Florida, with the exception of mining and processing in north Florida by Occidental Chemical Co. The phosphate rock is beneficiated at the mine sites and then is transported out of Florida in a raw state, or to one of the industry's 18 chemical complexes where it is processed further. In 1981, Florida produced more than 42 Mt (46 million st) of phosphate rock-a 1% decrease from 1980. The industry also produced more than 12 Mt (13 million st) of phosphate chemical products in 1981 and transported them to both domestic and foreign customers. This year, the state's phosphate production and shipments are substantially lower than recent annual levels because of a depressed worldwide phosphate market. With production down slightly in 1981, shipments declined and company inventories increased dramatically. Phosphate-related shipments through the port of Tampa alone fell 20%. As a result, in 1982, phosphate operations cut production to reduce inventories. According to the Fertilizer Institute, during the fiscal year ending June 30, 1982, phosphate rock production fell 18%; phosphate rock shipments, 28%; finished fertilizer production, 30%; finished fertilizer shipments, 25%; and phosphate rock exports declined by 20%. Despite depressed conditions, Florida phosphate production and shipments are expected to increase in the near future with more rock being processed into fertilizer products. Phosphate is one of Florida's major industries. The US Bureau of Mines estimates it contributed $3 billion to the state's economy in 1981 and an additional $1.4 billion to the US economy. Utah statute defines sovereign lands as "those lands lying below the ordinary high water mark of navigable bodies of water at the date of statehood, and owned by the state by virtue of its sovereignty." The lands within the bed of Great Salt Lake (GSL) are, by this definition, sovereign lands, acquired at statehood in 1896 in accordance with the "equal footing" doctrine, granting each state control and ownership of navigable waters and the lands underneath those waters within its borders. Under public trust doctrine, the state, as trustee for the people, bears responsibility for preserving and protecting the right of the public to use of the waters for navigation, commerce, fishing, recreation, and wildlife habitat. Also by statute, sovereign lands are defined as "state lands," to be managed by "multiple use sustained-yield principles." The Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands is given management authority for sovereign lands and, as manager, has responsibility to prepare comprehensive plans, initiate studies of the lake and its resources, implement comprehensive plans through state and local entities, and coordinate the activities of various divisions within the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands also has responsibility for management of mineral leasing on sovereign lands. The many resources on the lake--water, minerals, wildlife, recreation, archeological and historical values--are managed by as many state agencies which occasionally creates conflicts. The brines of GSL contain several ions that crystalize into valuable minerals during evaporation. The major ions in the lake are, in order of relative abundance, chloride, sodium, sulfate, magnesium, and potassium. Mineral products which are currently extracted from lake brines are sodium chloride, magnesium chloride brine which can be sold as flake magnesium chloride or further processed into magnesium and chlorine gas, and potassium sulfate. Mineral products which have potential for extraction include gypsum, sodium sulfate, and trace amounts of lithium, boron, and bromine. The GSL contained an estimated 4.3 billion short tons (st) (3.9 billion metric tons [mt]) of dissolved salts in 1998. Utah Geological Survey (UGS) estimates of the dissolved salt content in GSL have fluctuated from 4.0 to 5.5 billion st (3.6 to 5.0 billion mt) due to the dynamic conditions in the lake as salts are precipitated and redissolved, and due to the diversion of brines from GSL, such as the West Desert Pumping Project. The lake has four areas of varying salinity, separated by dikes or other man-made structures: north arm and Stansbury Bay brines at near saturation (25 to 27 percent total dissolved solids [TDS]); the main body of the south arm with concentrations ranging from 7 to 15 percent TDS as lake elevations fluctuate; the waters in Farmington Bay at approximately 3 to 5 percent TDS; and Bear River Bay at <1 to 7 percent TDS. The percent TDS in Bear River Bay fluctuates with lake level, and changes in Bear River inflow. The transfer of salts from the south arm to the north arm has raised questions about the viability of the mineral and brine shrimp industries. The UGS and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) continue to monitor salinities at designated sites on the lake to document changing lake salinity. A recurrent theme is that placement of dikes and diversions can have significant and rapid impacts on various conditions in the lake. Hydrocarbon resources on the lake are significant, but presently undeveloped. The hydrocarbons are low gravity (4 to 9 degree API) and tar-like, contain high nitrogen concentrations, and up to 12 percent sulfur. The unusual characteristics of the oil have been the subject of studies by chemists at Weber State University and University Louis Pasteur de Strasbourg. However, these resources are difficult, and at present, uneconomic to extract using current technology because of the nature of the hydrocarbons, and production in "an offshore, highly saline environment." Oolitic sand deposits make up many of the beaches and shorelines around the lake. Because of their high calcium carbonate content, oolites have been used by Magnesium Corporation of America (MagCorp) and its predecessors for acid neutralization and dike construction. Oolites are also used in very minor amounts in flower drying. The Utah Division of Oil, Gas and Mining reports up to 130,000 st (118,000 mt) mined annually by MagCorp from U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands adjacent to GSL. Currently, there are twelve producing mineral leases which generated slightly more than $1,000,000 in royalties during calendar year 1998. IMC Kalium Ogden Corp. (IMC Kalium) produces potassium sulfate and magnesium chloride from brines concentrated through solar evaporation in Bear River Bay and Clyman Bay. By-product sodium chloride is transferred to IMC Salt, which packages and sells the salt. MagCorp produces magnesium metal from brines concentrated in Stansbury Bay. Cargill Salt produces sodium chloride from brines provided by MagCorp under a lease agreement. Morton Salt produces salt at the southeast end of Stansbury Island. Lastly, North Shore Limited produces cocentrated brines for use in dietary and mineral/vitamin supplements near Spring Bay in the north arm of the lake. Producers of magnesium, potash, and salt from GSL contribute significantly to the value of metals and industrial minerals in Utah. Together these companies contribute approximately $240 million in gross value, or 18 percent of the value of the state&apos;s nonfuel mineral production. Most of this production is exported.

To evaluate the influence of uniformly tensioned roof bolts on roof stability, mechanically anchored roof bolts were installed using the conventional bolter and a specially developed thrust and torque controlled retrofitable box mounted on a bolting machine. Thirteen thousand bolts were installed over 19 crosscuts in a 4 heading development in an operating coal mine. Geological , bolt and mine parameters were recorded at bolt installation, and bolt tension histories, roof sag and other changes evident in the rooms, crosscuts and intersections were recorded over a 2 month period. In all, 24 variables and 11 responses were quantified at 67 bolt clusters. These data were analyzed statistically to determine the significant variables influencing roof stability. As the mine development was safe and stable during the monitoring period, roof sag after two months was used as an index to quantify "stability." The variables of significance were shown to be coefficient of variation of bolt tension, bolt anchorage capacity, roof lithology, roof shape, standard deviation of bolt tension, and dip of roof lithologies. It was concluded that of the variables with which the mine operator has control, bolt tension uniformity was the most significant parameter at this mine. Other variables, such as intersection type and time between mining and bolting , were not significant, whereas, some other potentially significant variables such as horizontal stress or roof joint frequency did not vary sufficiently for their influence on stability to be evaluated.

Innovative mining technology came to Texas in the form of bucket wheel excavator/cross-pit spreader systems. Texas Utilities Mining Company put the first system to work at its Big Brown Mine in December 1985. The second such system was put into operation at the Monticello Mine in February 1991. The cross-pit spreader systems are mobile, electrically powered, excavation and conveyor systems, the principal components of which include bucket wheel excavators (BVE) and an across-the-pit conveyor (spreader). These crawler mounted machines operate as a unit; the BVE&apos;s excavate overburden, feed it via conveyors to the spreader which in turn conveys the material across the open pit and onto the developing spoil bank. The system at the Big Brown Mine is composed of 2 BVE&apos;s and an across-the-pit conveyor while the Monticello system is made up of 1 BVE and a spreader. The BVE&apos;s prestrip overburden preparing a dragline bench for the final removal of overburden. Numerous evaluations, including lignite production requirements, economics, overburden characteristics, rehandle reduction, spoil stability, and the compatibility with dragline operations, led to the selection of the cross-pit spreader system at the Big Brown Mine. The system has proven itself as a viable and economical means of prestripping. The system&apos;s success at the Big Brown Mine led to the development of a second such system at Monticello. The advent of the cross-pit spreader system is viewed by Texas Utilities Mining Company as a viable solution to recovering deeper lignite reserves in a safe and economical manner.
