The Coteau Properties Company's Freedom Mine is a surface lignite mining operation utilizing large draglines, trucks and shovels, tractor-scrapers, and bulldozers to uncover a single coal seam. In 1989, a work order system was instituted to record data by equipment type, cost, productivity, and distance, and to provide historical information for planning the most efficient and economic use of each equipment type in the mining operation. This report explains how the work order system was initiated, what data is tracked, and how the data is utilized for equipment and project scheduling.

In April 1975 Kaiser Steel Corporation and the United States' Department of Energy entered into a cost-sharing agreement for the demonstration of shield-type longwall supports on three consecutive longwall panels at Kaiser's York Canyon' Mine in New Mexico. Under this agreement the Department of Energy supplied 117 Hemscheidt 320 HSL caliper-type shield supports and hydraulic pumps for the duration of the demonstration. The purpose of the demonstration was to educate the U.S. coal mining industry as to the benefits in production, productivity, health and safety, and increased coal extraction afforded by shield-type longwall mining systems and to provide the industry with a working model. A detailed description of this demonstration is given in U.S. Department of Energy Publication No. DOE/ET/12530-T1, entitled "Demonstration of Shield-Type Longwall Supports at York Canyon Mine of Kaiser Steel Corporation," hereafter referred to as the York Canyon Report.

Fuzzy logic is a useful tool for Sustainable Development (SD) decision making because it can express uncertainty, both in the informational and in the decision-making environment. The general linguistic definition, acceptability for environment (air, water, nature, risk, etc.), as well other aspects of sustainable development (health, management issues, etc) is proved to be useful in approximate reasoning and decision-making. According to this definition, the various fuzzy functions of environmental acceptability can be constructed. This construction is based on the concept of special kinds of fuzzy functions generally defined as Linguistic Variables (LV), which are suitable for mapping to fuzzy sets. Various SD indicators could be used as domains of such functions, expressed either in their physical values (e.g. production, emissions, risk of accidents) or in Measure of Preferences (MP). The most important MP are mentioned below: Stated Preferences Techniques (SPT) of economic evaluation of environment, economic instruments of environmental protection mostly based on Revealed Preference Techniques (RPT), preferences scales (ordinal, cardinal) according to various methods of their construction, etc. Also, the possibility theory (analogous to probability) could be exploited in such construction. It could be used together with environmental engineering modelling formulas for the purpose of determining fuzzy functions. The appropriate forms of linguistic variables, considering limit cases for this purpose, are also discussed.

The amount of toxic fumes produced during blasting operation depends on the types of explosives used, product formulation, degree of confinement, conditions of use, and reactivity of the explosives with the host rock. Ammonium nitrate and fuel oil (ANFO) is still the explosive of choice due to its lower price and ease of use/loading. If not properly monitored and controlled, toxic fumes produced from blasting operations can have serious health hazards [1]. This paper presents a novel technique developed to track trapped fumes during a development blasting.

Mine tailings storage facilities (TSFs) can be a significant source of fine, respirable dust. About 25 percent of the mass fraction of tailings from a hard-rock mine consists of particles of a respirable size (smaller than 10 μm) [1]. This dust poses concerns, especially for nearby communities, because of its detrimental impact on respiratory health. Respirable tailings dust, primarily composed of quartz or free silica (SiO2), may cause silicosis, chronic pulmonary disease, bronchitis, collagen vascular diseases, and chronic granulomatous infections [2].

A Norbridge review of 25 top mining companies highlighted financial problems for many firms. To better understand these results, Norbridge benchmarked 17 mining companies to understand the problems that companies face, the methods being used to improve performance, and the results that have been achieved. The study indicates that many mining companies in three sectors-coal metals, and non- metallic minerals-have implemented new strategies to improve performance. Many of these strategies supplement traditional initiatives with two types of process improvement efforts, facility-specific and company-wide, to help generate performance gains. The study compares the results of these strategies in each sector. INTRODUCTION imes are tough in the mining industry. Norbridge reviewed financial results of 25 top mining companies for the past 2 years-seven coal companies, twelve metals companies, and six non-metallic minerals firms.*The study found that 40% lost money in 2002, and * Coal companies include Alliance Resource Partners, Arch Coal, Consol Energy, Massey Energy, North American Coal, Peabody Energy and Westmoreland. Metals producers include Barrick Gold, Cleveland-Cliffs, Coeur d'Alene, Falconbridge, Freeport McMoran, Grupo Mexico, Inco, Newmont Mining, Noranda, Phelps Dodge, Placer Dome, and Teck Corninco. Non-metallic firms include Florida Rock, IMC Global, Martin Marietta Materials, Oglebay Norton, PotashCorp and Vulcan Materials. The Underground Research Laboratory (URL) , a major geotechnical research facility, is currently being developed by Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) , 120 km northeast of Winnipeg, Manitoba. The URL is part of the Canadian Nuclear Fuel Waste Management Program, which is assessing the concept of nuclear fuel waste disposal in a vault deep in stable plutonic rock of the Canadian Shield (Simmons, 1986). Comprehensive geotechnical research and development activities are being carried out in conjunction with excavation? and construction of the underground facilities.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has conducted studies to evaluate dust control technologies on deep cut continuous mining sections. These surveys have been conducted in different mines using various mining methods, face ventilation systems and dust control systems. The surveys typically consist of respirable dust sampling combined with a time study of mining activities. Measurements of dust control and operational parameters are also made. Critical elements identified for controlling respirable dust in deep cut mining systems include controlling intake dust, dust collector capacity, face ventilation quantities and velocities, positioning of workers, work practices and selection of equipment. This paper discusses how the dust surveys are conducted in deep cut mining sections and how these surveys are used to identify specific dust generating sources.

This paper describes a creep damage model that was proposed to clarify the rockburst mechanism for the Mufulira underground copper mine in Zambia. Cumulative rock damage was evaluated for the edge elements of each sidewall of the mining drives based on normal stresses by the 3-D displacement discontinuity method (DDM) (Crouch and Fairhurst, 1973). The rockburst occurrences were well hindcasted.

Rare earth element (REE)-and gold-bearing breccia pipes are a potentially significant economic target in the Pea Ridge iron ore mine, Washington County, Missouri. The Pea Ridge deposit is one of eight known volcanic-hosted iron ore deposits in the Middle Proterozoic St. Francois terrane, which are similar to the Olympic Dam-type deposits of Australia. The iron orebody is steeply dipping, tabular-shaped, and cuts across the host rhyolite. The footwall of the deposit is zoned from the massive apatite-bearing magnetite core outward to heterolithic breccia, pseudobreccia, specular hematite zone, to an extensive silicified zone. The hanging wall is zoned from the massive magnetite core outward to a heterolithic breccia, pseudobreccia, and an amphibole skarn zone. The REE-rich breccia pipes cut through the various lithologies along the footwall at or near contacts. They are typically 60 m long, 15 m wide, and extend at least 120 m vertically. The pipes are comprised of fragments of rhyolite host rock, massive magnetite zone, specular hematite zone, and silicified zone rocks supported in a matrix of rock flour, barite, feldspar, monazite, apatite, chlorite, xenotime, and, locally, gold. Total REE oxide content of samples of the ground mass material, which are not diluted with lithic fragments, average about 20 weight percent. Grades from working faces in the mine are lower and average about 12 weight percent. Gold distribution is erratic, but concentrations are as high as 371 parts per million.

The Nevada Test Site is located approximately 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, NY. The site was primarily used by the Department of Energy for the field testing of nuclear weapons and contaminated by several million cubic feet of low-level radioactive wastes, heavy metals, volatile and non-volatile organics, and explosive materials. Leaching and transportation of these contaminants are creating severe environmental problems. The purpose of this study is to examine pozzolan, a natural alumina-silicate mineral, as a possible replacement of the existing impermeable barriers (clays). In the first phase of this study, radionuclide sorption characteristics of pozzolan were investigated. This paper will present the results of the sorption tests for the target radionuclides.

The solvent extraction of vanadium (V) from Na2CO3–NaHCO3 solution was attempted using Aliquat-336 (methyltrioctylammonium chloride) extractant dissolved in sulfonated kerosene as diluent with 2-octanol as phase modifier. The influence factors, such as Na2CO3 concentration, NaHCO3 concentration, temperature, extractant concentration and impurity P, on vanadiumextraction were investigated. The results revealed that the single stage extraction efficiency of vanadium reached above 89%from 20 g/L Na2CO3 – 20 g/L NaHCO3 solution under the following conditions: extractant concentration of 15%, room temperature of 20–30 °C, 2-octanol of 6%, phase ratio (O/A) of 1:1, and oscillation time of 1 min. The addition of NaHCO3 into Na2CO3 solution could lower the pH value of the Na2CO3 solution, improve extraction efficiency of vanadium, and not introduce other impurities. The phosphate anion did not interact with the vanadate anion in the Na2CO3–NaHCO3 solution. The P in the Na2CO3–NaHCO3 solution had little influence on vanadium extraction.

Geochemical prospecting method using stream sediments, soils and rock chips has been tested to see the applicability for the typical Kuroko field in Japan. Three independent anomalies have been detected in maps being shown by grav densities of cells which are represented by the results of factor analysis as well as distribution of minor elements scaled in logarithm. A small vein type mineralization which has outcrops could be attributed to the origin of them whereas the one near the surface of known Kuroko deposit to a coincidence. The addition of drill core geochemistry is required to complete the interpretation.

The Fortitude gold-silver deposit is related to a "wallrock" copper porphyry system developed within Middle Pennsylvanian to Permian Antler Sequence rocks adjacent to a Middle-Tertiary altered granodiorite intrusive stock at Copper Canyon. Gold-silver ores of the Fortitude deposit occur with disseminated and massive sulfide replacement mineralization of skarn-like or calc-silicated limy horizons of the Antler Sequence contact meta-sedimentary rocks. A major, north-trending, steeply westward dipping normal fault was important as a conduit for hydrothermal fluids responsible for the metallization in the Fortitude area. Gold-silver mineralization is best developed near a marble front where retro-grade chloritization and destruction of prograde calc-silicate mineral phases is most prevalent. Fluid-inclusion studies performed on the Copper Canyon system indicate a wide variation in fluid chemistry during several hydrosilicate stages that ranged in temperature from 500°C to 220°C.

Conveyor systems persist in being a source of injuries and fatalities in the mining industry. To reduce these incidents, better methods are needed to enhance the monitoring of probable hazards and improve situational awareness during the normal operation and maintenance of conveyor systems. To address these issues, researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) continue to investigate emerging technologies that show the potential to improve miner safety around conveyors. This paper presents a feasibility assessment by NIOSH researchers of a fully integrated, commercially available wireless Internet of Things (IoT) system to improve situational awareness around conveyor systems.

This late 1979 Bureau of Mines report presents current stocks and monthly consumption rates for Guyanese refractory bauxite (GRB), with emphasis on the impact of the GRB shortage on the refractory and downstream industries, general background material, and an evaluation of the situation resulting from the strike of Guyanese bauxite workers during the summer of 1979. A study by the Bureau indicated that industry stocks contained little more than a month's supply of GRB--30,000 calcined short tons (CST), at present consumption rates of 25,000 CST per month. The report was requested by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FW) in response to refractory industry requests that the Government release GRB from the National Stockpile to minimize forecasted industry problems. The report traces the historical innovations in the high-alumina and/or bauxite-type refractory products industry, eventually leading up to fabrication of modern, high-quality firebrick and monolithic refractories.

Phosphate rock is the primary source of phosphorus, an element necessary to all forms of life--plant, animal, and human. While phosphorus finds many uses in everyday life, it is an irreplaceable ingredient in all complete plant foods. With the present need for intensive farming, the fertility of the soil can be maintained only by external additions supplied by mines or other sources. A major consideration in any mining operation is to establish the economic and ecological impact of the development on the local population as well as the national interest. The Commodity Data Summaries, as published by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM), is a ready reference concerning the importance of phosphate to the national and local interest. The summary of domestic and world pro¬duction is given in Table 1. During 19722 the demand for marketable phosphate rock exceeded the supply in the United States and the rest of the world. Domestic and world reserves are more than adequate to meet furture demands. Phosphate rock prices firmed and export prices increased, reflecting the change from oversupply to a shortage of phosphatic fertilizers. Demand is expected to exceed supply through 1973. New fertilizer plant capacity planned for 1973-74 will increase the production of phosphate rock by more than 5 million tons in the United States. Morocco and Spanish Sahara are scheduled to increase their production to 18 and 3 million tpy, respectively, within 2 to 3 years. The domestic phosphate rock production for 1972 was 40.8 million tons and 1973 was 42.1 million tons.' Industry, with government-supported programs, will emphasize restoration of mined land and solution of the colloidal slime disposal problem in Florida. The summary gives a great deal of information but does not give a complete picture. There are many supporting industries which contrib¬ute to the area in which the mines are located. The figures shown in Table 1 deal with concentrates. To produce such concentrates many more tons of waste overburden and ore must be moved. Because of the competitive nature of the phosphate rock industry, data on concentration ratios not only are difficult to obtain but also are not for publication by companies. The concentration ratios vary from one mine to the next in Florida as well as in Tennessee and the western United States. To produce 42.4 million tons of phos¬phate rock in the United States required moving about 350 to 400 million tons of material. Domestic Industry. In 1972 some 26 firms and the Tennessee Valley Authority produced phosphate rock, with several firms produc¬ing from more than one mine. The distribution of marketable phos¬phate rock production was: Florida and North Carolina 82%; Idaho, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming 13%; and Missouri and Tennessee 5%. The value of this production was $223 million. The principal consuming classifications were: agriculture 75%, soaps and detergents 5%, plating and polishing 3%, animal feed supplements 4%, and miscellaneous applications 13%. Over 5,000 firms processed end-prod¬ucts for agricultural purposes. Uses of Phosphate Rock. The tendency in the United States has been to produce more phosphoric acid by the wet process, while the production of electric furnace phosphorus, triple superphosphate, and ordinary superphosphate has been on the decline. Exports of phosphate rock have been on the increase for several years and in 1971 reached 33% of total production. However, export sales of phos¬phate rock are expected to decline in the years ahead, both in total tons of sales and in percentage of production as domestic sales increase (see Table 2). The description and chemistry involved in the production of phos¬phate fertilizers is too complicated to be presented here. The Waggaman13 book is a very thorough reference on the subject involv¬ing production, utilization, and chemistry. The various operations generally have chemical plants near the dry plants or ship to associated chemical plants for further processing. Wet rock, dry rock, and ground dry rock of various grades are sold. In addition various grades of calcined phosphate rock, including defluorinated phosphate rock for animal food supplements, are pro¬duced. Various grades of phosphoric acid, superphosphate, triple suerphosphate, as well as diammonium phosphate, are produced. Machine learning in the form of artificial neural networks was applied to investigate whether specimen load evolution can be predicted as a function of acoustic emission (AE) signals in the case of three-point bending (TPB) marble specimens instrumented with piezoelectric sensors. The ultimate objective of this study is to develop a model that can quantify rock behavior under loading that can lead to rock-failure prediction in underground structures subjected to bending, such as roof failure in development or production openings.

In subterranean mining operations, access to communication networks deep underground is critical for transporting data, voice and video, and other supporting applications that are essential for efficient and safe operations. Whether accessing sophisticated ERP or maintenance management systems, engaging in fleet management, video surveillance, or access control, or protecting miners with wireless locator systems, these networks serve as a literal lifeline between workers deep within mines and surface operations. For this, mining networks require more than permanently installed network cabling, it also requires unique deployable systems designed for quick installation, extension and even relocation as the active mine site area moves, or equipment is moved in and out.

Standing supports have been used in coal mines for decades to enhance roof support capability. Occasionally, standing supports are used to resist the lateral movement of spalled ribs. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are conducting a testing program for standing supports to investigate the effect of lateral loading on their vertical loading capacities and the factors affecting their lateral loading capacities. The Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) was used to determine the response of steel props to vertical and horizontal loadings. Finite element models (FEMs) were developed and verified using the tested steel props. Prop models were used to study the effect of a range of roof and floor materials — gray shale, shale and claystone — on the critical buckling loads of the steel props.
