China's coal energy development, characteristics and relationships with atmospheric pollution are reported. Atmospheric pollution sources from coal combustion are analyzed. Some of the projects for clean coal combustion in the Shanghai area include use of industrial briquettes, investigation of coal combustion additives, and blending combustion of coal with industrial wastes. Coal is China's main energy source, and 80 percent of China's annual coal production is used in combustion devices. Coal-flue gases from the domestic stoves and industrial furnaces are the main atmospheric pollution source. China's atmospheric pollution is, in fact, the pollution of coal-flue gases. To 2000, in view of China's energy needs as a developing nation, the atmospheric pollution from coal combustion must receive our utmost attention.

The following paper presents the results of geostatistical studies of the selected hard-coal deposits in Poland. Geostatistical methods were applied mainly to the characterization of variability structure of the coal seams thicknesses as well as sulphur and ash contents in the coals. Results imply that the accuracy of coal reserves estimations can be improved if kriging method is applied. Kriging allows predicting more precisely the values of such parameters as thickness and sulphuring content.

Improving the mineral industry's tarnished image describes in a nut- shell the reason why the Speakers Bureau of the Tucson Subsection of the AIME was formed. Let's go back in time about 3 years to the fall of 1971. Literally thousands of bills detrimental to the mineral industry were being introduced into Congress and State Legislatures. Unfortunately, many were being passed and signed into law. Clean air and water, zero pollution, preserve the environment, ecology, biodegradeable, wilderness were the words that the self- styled ecologists and environmentalists were preaching. The mineral industry either sat mute or in place of acting, reacted in a way certain to attract a maximum amount of bad publicity with a minimum amount of rhetoric. A mining company president, for example, commenting on the primary air standards in Arizona was reported by the press as having said, "we'll shut all the smelters down and put thousands of Arizonans out of work if we have to meet the Arizona standards." Or another defending a poorly planned highly visible open pit nonmetallics operation, "we'll take the whole mountain down if we want to, and nobody can stop us" and still another manager of Operations, "the bottom line is all that counts, to hell with all of this environmental nonsense."

The Minerals Industry makes heavy demands for and on its Material Handling equipment. It also gives progressive management the opportunity for considerable savings, ad consequently increased profits. In some cases, cost of Materials Handling amounts to 40°/o of the total cost of the ultimate product. Handling costs are hidden in overhead, indirect labor, excessive maintenance, productive workers performing handling tasks, and, a great many more. Even though Materials Handling is the oldest occupation of mankind, it is only within the past twenty years that it has emerged as a specialized field. While this industry has made full use of all types of mechanical and vibratory conveyors, pneumatic conveyors in their proper application can be a distinct asset. me use of pneumatic conveyors by this industry however is limited- to a certain extent by the particle size of your products through the various phases of manufacture, as well as their bulk density. However, with increasing knowledge of the fluidization of dry materials, their use is becoming more wide spread.

The Kubota surface melting system has been under development since 1975. It has found commercial application on the melting of municipal sludge, and ash from solid waste. The melted product has physical properties allowing its use as a substitute for aggregate in cement and asphaltic construction. "The major challenges of the current mining are the energetic optimization, the lowest water consumption and minimizing environmental impact. One technique that eliminates much of the waste avoiding milling sterile, operating without water and to decrease the generation of waste at the end of the process, must be considered a major innovation. One of the most important developments in these past 10 years in the mining industry was expanding the use of high-tech sensors aimed at pre-concentration of ore. Among the mining areas where this type of technology is booming is the industrial minerals. The most common sensors are color sensors with Charge – Coupled Devices (CCD cameras) allowing through the RGB colorimetric system, the separation of minerals with different hues, and in many cases, a difference in brightness. More recently, the development of the use of dual energy X-ray transmission (DE-XRT) Dual Zone allowed the separation by atomic density of the mineral constituents of the rock. This paper presents a review of these two techniques (CCD and DE – XRT) as well some results showing the use of these two techniques for Earth Rare and Limestone. INTRODUCTION The mining industry is going through one of its biggest technological changes since the industrial revolution by the implementation of new technologies, according to Australian Mining Magazine (2015), whose theme emphasized one of the 10 greatest challenges that mining will face in the coming years. Optimization of the energy matrix in mining is focused on reducing water consumption and minimizing environmental impacts. The implementation of sensor technologies (Sensor-Based Sorting - SBS) allows elimination of mill tailings and permits the mill to operate with reduced use of water or totally eliminate this consumption (Young et al, 2016). According to Jönsson (2014) mining has undergone striking changes with the expansion of sensors of high technologies applied in the pre-concentration of mining ores. These techniques have contributed over the past 10 years in the recapture of mining areas with emphasis on the environment and/or operational optimizations. In line with the requirements of technological innovation, the mining industry is forced to make improvements in gravimetric processes ensuring better levels of Run of Mine ore feed in beneficiation plants. The implementation of automatic sorting, assisted by dual energy x-ray transmission (DE-XRT) sensor technology, or charged coupled device (CCD) image capture camera technology in the feed plant, allows for the selective sorting of individual particles into pre-concentrations (Veras et al, 2016)."

Underground mine accidents, such as mine fires, remain a health and safety risk to mine workers. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are developing a data-driven, predictive model for characterizing the location and size of unknown underground fires. This study examines applying a machine learning-based model to predict fire size and location in a large underground metal mine based on hypothetical scenarios on the model performance. The results show that the size and location of an unknown fire can be determined with over 80% and 90% accuracy, respectively, and potentially help to reduce the risk of hazardous conditions for emergency response.

Global public mineral reporting codes have driven strong governance of public disclosures of minerals information. Recently, we have seen an increase in disclosure of information related to Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) issues, and governance of ESG information in mining companies has arguably reached a similar level of governance and diligence afforded mineral reporting. We define Resource Governance as the conjunction of environmental, social and minerals governance. A modern systems approach to Resource Governance, which combines mineral and ESG information, would provide not only reporting and governance capability, but also has the potential to sense/respond, predict, and manage ESG risks.

Commonly used predictors of ground vibration from blasting, being linear in log-log plot, do not model the underlying physics of wave attenuation. Amplitude of the wave decays with distance due to geometrical spreading and inelastic attenuation producing a nonlinear carve in log-log scale. The nolinear decay of seismic waves has also been observed from non-explosive sources, such as, pile driving, drop hammer, traffic, etc. The improved predictors, by explicitly taking these two mechanisms into consideration, model the data trend extremely well at all distance ranges. Actual field data from different studies have been used to validate the improved models.

The Lower Olentangy Tunnel (LOT) Project involves the construction of a 17,000 ft (5,200 m) long, 12 ft (3.65 m) internal diameter Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) tunnel. The tunnel is excavated by using an Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) machine designed to cope with soft ground, weak rocks and water pressure. The project is located in the city of Columbus, Ohio and the main geotechnical hazards are related to the heterogenous soils and the low overburden in an urban environment. This paper focuses on the performance of the EPB first drive and the comparison between the design assumptions and the actual TBM performance during construction.

"Rare earth elements (REEs) found in coal are in the form of minerals, ion-adsorbed onto clay surfaces or inner layers, or organically bound. Rare earth minerals such as monazite exist in coal and have grain sizes smaller than 5 µm. In this study, froth flotation was successful in concentrating rare earth minerals existing in a thickener underflow material derived from Fire Clay seam coal that contained around 431 ppm of total rare earth elements (TREE) on a dry ash basis. Conditioning with fatty acid followed by processing using multiple stages of conventional flotation produced a final concentrate containing 2,300 ppm TREE. Using a laboratory flotation column to limit hydraulic entrainment, the TREE content was further enriched to around 4,700 ppm, which equated to an enrichment ratio of 10:1.IntroductionRare earth elements (REEs) are becoming increasingly important and have been widely used as raw materials for the production of phosphor, metal catalysts, magnets and batteries (Binnemans et al., 2013; Zhang et al., 2015). REE recovery from alternative sources such as coal and coal byproducts has the potential to stabilize the economic viability of coal mining operations while providing a dependable supply of critical materials.The average REE content of the world’s coal resources is around 60 to 70 ppm (Zhang et al., 2015). There are many well-known coal beds with high contents of REEs such as those in the Far East coalfields in Russia with contents of 300 to 1,000 ppm, the Fire Clay coal seam in eastern Kentucky in the United States with contents around 500 ppm and the Sydney Basin in Nova Scotia, Canada, with contents of 72 to 483 ppm (Birk and White, 1991; Seredin, 1996; Hower, Ruppert and Eble, 1999; Blissett, Smalley and Rowson, 2014). The occurrence of REEs in coal and coal byproducts can be classified into three types: (1) rare earth minerals, such as monazite and xenotime, (2) ion-adsorbed REEs on clays and (3) REEs associated with organic matrices. The rare earth minerals in coal and coal byproducts are very small in particle size, generally on the micrometer and/or nanometer scales (Honaker et al., 2014). Froth flotation, which concentrates minerals based on surface chemistry differences, has been widely used to treat fine rare earth industrial minerals such as monazite, xenotime and bastnaesite (Abeidu, 1972; Cheng, Holtham and Tran, 1993; Pavez and Peres, 1994; Pavez, Brandao and Peres, 1996; Jordens et al., 2014). As such, flotation is a promising method for the concentration of rare earth minerals from coal and coal byproducts."

Oil production rate and ultimate primary recovery from a heavy or viscous oil reservoir is usually limited to a very small fraction of the original oil in place. Typically, normal production rate is in the range of up to 10 barrels per day and expected ultimate cumulative production is up to 10% of in place values. Heavy oil reserves are not all alike. The physical properties of the rock, the liquid hydrocarbons, and depths of the deposits are so different that each reservoir poses a unique enhanced oil recovery problem. In some reservoirs thermal recovery by internal heat generation or external heat injection has been successfully exploited. In other reservoirs, mining the oil bearing formation for oil recovery by surface processing has been practiced. This paper will present an overview of the heavy oil recovery state of the art and discuss the critical factors leading to the decision for selection of a conventional hydrocarbon recovery or mining and extraction processes.

Heavy earth-moving machineries used in openpit mines intensively expose drill operators to whole-body vibration and shocks, and thus to musculoskeletal disorders. The roles of individual, machine and rock-related factors in their exposure remain poorly understood. This cross-sectional study investigated their roles in 39 drill operators from Indian iron ore mines. It shows that 70 percent of the operators were exposed to high levels of vibration, above the limit values recommended by ISO 2631-1 (1997). Multiple linear regression models showed that the whole-body vibration and shock exposures were strongly associated with operator’s age, drill-machine model and rock hardness, uniaxial compressive strength and density. The role of body mass index was close to significance (p = 0.08). Univariate analyses found the drill’s age, seat-pad thickness and seat backrest height were also strong predictors. These results help in identifying risky operators, materials and occupational situations, and in implementing appropriate prevention and intervention strategies to reduce and monitor the exposures and health risk. In addition, during the planning stage of acquisition of new equipment, anthropometric data of the operators should be considered for the ergonomic design of the seat.

The reagents commercially used in coal flotation and their roles are reviewed and discussed According to their function the reagents are divided into often overlapping groups: 1. Collectors 2. Frothers 3. Conditioning Reagents Frothers have by far the largest effect on the amount of coal recovered They act not only in their traditionally accepted function of “bubble makers”, but in coal flotation they serve in a seldom acknowledged role of collectors. A lab flotation study on four samples of different coal ranks shows how these react to various frother families and proves that no froher is the optimum reagent for all types of coal. The advent of new technology in flotation equipment in the past decade has resulted in various novel designs of column cells, Jameson and Centrifloat™ cells, air-sped hydrocylones, etc. All should require special frothers or blends of frothers to meet their specific needs.

To fully utilize a ventilation simulator as a planning and production tool, the network database must keep pace with mining progress. By using AutoCAD's™ attribute-definition function, the branch data and node coordinates can be stored as part of the branch-diagram file and updated with the drawing. Attributes are drawing entities that contain text which can he extracted in a standard spreadsheet format or as an ASCII text file. The data can be subsequently loaded into a ventilation simulator. This paper presents the methodology for using AutoCAD's™ attribute feature in a ventilation simulation format.

This paper reports on recent modeling efforts to analyze the eastern U.S. steam coal market with a cross-sectional econometric as well as a quadratic programming approach. The background to coal modeling is examined first. The particular aspect of the steam coal market to be modeled are then presented and the corresponding coal model described. Both empirical results and rigorous mathematic pertubation analysis are presented. Conclusions are then drawn regarding potential modeling applications in the policy area.

In the design and specification of a ventilation system for an underground mine, it is necessary to make reasonably accurate estimates of the pressure losses in the various airways of the mine. These estimates can be made with little difficulty for open airways with simple geometric cross-sections, such as those cut by continuous miners or tunnel-boring machines. The situation is much different on a longwall face, where the airway's complex geometric cross-section and the presence in the airway of obstructing equipment having a variety of shapes make it difficult, if not impossible, to estimate pressure loss using traditional methods of calculation. Solvent Extraction (SX) technology has undergone significant refinements including outright process changes to achieve greater copper production rates with lower organic entrainment levels. LIGHTNIN has completed a detailed study aimed at improving on the conventional Holmes & Narver and Davy Power Gas type impeller designs1 by optimizing the mixing through the use of high efficiency pumper turbines instead of making system changes as others are doing. Since each individual installation requires a different design head and flow, LIGHTNIN has developed the R320 "family" of high efficiency, curved blade pumper turbines. These impellers are designed to maximize head and flow while reducing entrainment through lower power consumption, less shear generation and turbulence, elimination of air incorporation, production of the optimum droplet distribution, and lower tip speeds. These improvements also maintain the required mass transfer and copper recovery of the traditional impeller designs. The R320 impeller benefits have been quantified using Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) and proven in multiple domestic and foreign installations at flow rates exceeding 15,000 GPM. Design comparisons of this improved impeller type versus traditional technology impellers in head, flow, power and entrainment are presented for review. In addition, the inherent benefits of axial flow, high efficiency impellers like the A3 1 0 and A6000 in auxiliary mix chambers will be discussed. The high flow, low shear characteristics of these patented impellers provide the necessary dispersion stability for mass transfer while speeding phase disengagement in the settlers due to low power and low shear input.

"INTRODUCTION Tunnels are important elements of the German federal road network which have to cope with an increasing traffic load especially of heavy goods vehicles. In order to ensure a high availability and safety level for these key infrastructures, big efforts are required by owners and operators in order to keep all infrastructures up to date. This mainly relates to current European regulations regarding tunnel safety (Directive 2004/54/EG) [1] and their national implementation, which must be fulfilled by many existing tunnels. In this context the German Federal Government spends more than 1.1 billion € for the structural and operational retrofitting of more than 120 existing road tunnels. As many of these projects have recently been finished or are still under progress, experiences and best practices could be reported. After the description of current requirements in national standards regarding structural fire protection, the paper gives an example for an upgrade of a tunnel’s fire protection by installing an additional fire protection system, which is a quite costly measure. Another possibility to fulfill current requirements regarding structural fire protection could be the numerical proof of sufficient bearing capacity of a structure. The influence of different fire loads and fire durations on the bearing capacity of typical road tunnel structures have been investigated in a research project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Transport (BMVI) and coordinated by the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt). The results of this research project have been used to define a procedure how to investigate existing tunnels regarding structural fire protection. Finally, the research results have also been the basis for a current update of national standards for tunnel construction. REQUIREMENTS REGARDING STRUCTURAL FIRE PROTECTION The structural fire protection design of road tunnels is usually based on temperature-time curves of exposure to fire, for simplicity called ""fire curves"". The fire development after fire growth is illustrated with fire curves. Fire curves can be subdivided into a heating-up phase, a fully developed fire phase, and if applicable, into a cooling-off phase (cf. Figure 1). During the fully developed fire, the fire remains at a certain temperature level."

Since start-up in 1985 the Cannon Mine has produced and shipped a 170 g Au/tonne (5 oz Au/ton) flotation concentrate to various smelters for gold and silver recovery. Several processed have been investigated to economically produce dore' at the mine site from the refractory concentrate. This paper describes recent laboratory and pilot scale test work utilized in the process design and engineering feasibility study of a 73 tonne/day (80 ton/day) pressure oxidation and CIL facility. The designed pressure oxidation circuit utilizes a series of vertical autoclave units operating at 170°C (338"F) and 1.4 MPa (200 psig). Projected operating costs are discussed.
