The C&NW Ore Dock at Escanaba, Michigan, is a major terminal on Lake Michigan for iron ore pellets arriving from the Marquette Iron Range located 112 km (70 miles) to the north. In an average year, the terminal handles in excess of 8 000 000 Mg (LT) of iron ore pellets consigned to a number of major steel companies. It is important to the steel companies for both cost control and operating efficiency that each cargo be sampled as accurately as possible in order to determine the physical and chemical properties of the pellets. This paper describes the equipment and operating procedures of the sampling facility and Presents some sampling data.

The case study assessed submicron aerosols at a continuous miner (CM) section, diesel aerosol concentrations at the longwall (LW) section, and elemental carbon (EC) and total carbon (TC) exposures. Aerosols at CM sections were a mix of freshly generated and those from main drifts. Low ambient concentrations and personal exposures suggest effective control strategies, with further reductions possible by curbing emissions from high-emitting light-duty vehicles.

The electrochemical oxidation of chalcopyrite in the absence of-a chemical oxidant was studied in ammonia/ammonium sulfate solutions by anodically polarizing electrodes prepared from massive chalcopyrite. The effects of pH, cupric and ammonia ion concentration were systematically evaluated. Kinetic parameters were obtained from the anodic charge-transfer regions of the anodic polarization curves. Increasing ammonia and hydroxyl ion concentrations increased the rate of oxidation. A mechanism is proposed which explains the first order dependence of (NH3) and (OR) associated with a single electron transfer process. An empirical relationship which accurately describes the dependence of the rest potential (i.e. zero current potential) on solution composition is also given.

Although surface chemistry fundamentals of semi-soluble minerals have been studied by many researchers, detailed understanding of these systems is still incomplete. In-situ FT-IR/IRS techniques have recently been used to successfully describe the adsorption of carboxylates at semi-soluble mineral surfaces. However, the wetting characteristics of these adsorbed films require further consideration. In this regard, the hydrophobicity and stability of transferred Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) monolayers of fatty acids at fluorite and calcite surfaces has been studied by contact angle measurements with polar and apolar liquids. Generally, it was found that the transferred LB monolayers of fatty acids at a calcite surface are unstable whereas such monolayers transferred at a fluorite surface are stable, as revealed from advancing and receding contact angle measurements. These results are believed to be due to the incomplete reaction of fatty acid monolayer at the calcite surface. In addition it was found that a closely packed well-ordered stearate monolayer with good hydrophobicity, equivalent to that of a transferred LB monolayer, can be formed at fluorite surfaces by spontaneous adsorption and self-assembly from aqueous solutions.

Currently, empirical models are used for predicting the hydrocyclone performance in terms of capacity, cut size (d50,c), water split and partition curve. These models, for example those of Lynch and Plitt, have been developed and checked for hydro cyclones with diameters larger than four inches. For smaller diameter hydrocyclones little empirical modelling has been done. This paper reports extended experimental research on small hydrocyclones. For these cyclones, the suitability of existing empirical models has been checked and their accuracy compared. Modifications of the existing models equations are proposed, improving their predictive capability for the small cyclones performance.

Sludge obtained during production of magnesium (Mg) metal from electrolyzing of molten MgCl2 contains entrapped magnesium particles. The sludge material containing the magnesium particles is a friable, continuous matrix of frozen salt mixture which may also contain some oxides and impurities. A dry process was developed for recovery of magnesium metal from the sludge, utilizing minerals beneficiation unit operations. The steps included selective comminution, screening, attritioning and tabling. Recovery of the high grade (+90 percent) metal was in the 70 percent range. The process is being commercially used in the U.S. The novel process was also successfully applied to a magnesium-alloy for recovery of metal from the sludges.

A massive slide at Bingham Canyon wiped out a side of the pit and covered the main haul road in and out of the pit. All pre-slide mine designs and schedules were no longer valid. New designs and schedules needed to be developed quickly to provide management with information regarding the immediate post-slide production potential and the time needed to ramp back up to full production. At the time of the slide, an effort was already underway to convert Bingham?s in-house Medium Term Scheduling Process to MineSight®?s Schedule Optimizer (MSSO). One of the main reasons for doing this was to reduce the time needed to produce Medium Term Schedules at Bingham, which involves a complex shovel-based scheduling approach with shovel productivities based on shovel type and the types of mining cuts to which the shovel is assigned over each planning period. The objective of the schedule was to maximize shovel usage, satisfy mill feed requirements of four SAG mills with variable milling rates, and have flexibility in setting truck constraints. This paper will describe how the new MSSO-based mine scheduling process met the challenge of producing new schedules for Bingham in a minimal amount of time.

Minnesota contains a major low- grade copper-nickel sulfide resource within the Duluth Gabbro Complex. Several companies have actively explored this resource. Open pit mining would be required to develop portions of the resource, and as a result, large quantities of sulfide-bearing lean ore and waste rock would be stockpiled. Although the problems associated with high-sulfide tailings and acid mine drainage are well documented, the leaching characteristics of low-grade mineralized stockpiles must be understood for environmental impact assessment, siting, and planning. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and AMAX have cooperated in a research program to study leaching and revegetation -of test stock- piles, Six small (1600 'tons) stockpiles were constructed at the MINNAMAX Project Site and they range in composition from 0.29 to 043 g % copper, 0.075 to 0.09% nickel, and 0.6 to 1.45% sulfur. Two of the stockpiles were covered with mineral soil, one was covered with topsoil, and three were not treated Revegetation plots were established on the piles which received a soil cover. Leachate samples and flow measurements were collected at the base of the piles. Initial results indicate that metal concentrations in leachate samples range from 10 to 10,000 times the concentrations found in the streams of the area. During the first growing season, the test pile covered with topsoil yielded 30% less water than untreated test piles. No reduction in yield was observed for the piles that were covered with the less fertile mineral soil. First-year vegetative growth, expressed as biomass, was four times greater on the-topsoil pile than on the mineral soil piles. The long-term effects of vegetation on leachate quantity and quality continue to be investigated.

The Sheep Creek project area lies between 15 and 20 miles north of White Sulphur Springs in west central Montana, on the southern flanks of the Little Belt Mountains. The Sheep Creek project is a joint venture in which Cominco American Resources, Inc., has a 50% operating interest and BHP-Utah International, Inc., has a 50% participatory interest. The property consists of over 40,000 acres of leased fee land and lode claims. Modern exploration of the Sheep Creek area began in 1973 and 1974, when Homestake Mining Co. examined the extensive Sheep Creek gossans with soil sampling, trenching, and drilling. Cominco American Inc. began exploration in the area in 1976. Between 1978 and 1985, Anaconda Copper Co., Exxon Minerals Co., and Freeport also conducted exploration programs in the area. In 1985, Cominco completed consolidation of the district, gained BHP-Utah International, Inc., as a joint venture partner, and the joint venture drilled the first significant copper mineralization on the property. Of six bodies of copper mineralization so far located, the best defined are an upper copper zone, which includes a probable resource of 4.5 million metric tonnes grading 2.5% Cu and 0.1 % Co, and a lower copper zone which includes a possible resource of 4.5 million metric tonnes grading 4% Cu. Exploration drilling of the property is in progress.

The term "secondary recovery" has recently brought on a new meaning in view of the depletion of natural resources, energy conservation, plant optimization, and the environmental consciousness that has led to hazardous waste management, recycling, and secondary processing. Many secondary recovery processes are being developed applying mineral processing technology. Gravity separation, magnetic separation, and flotation have all emerged as implicit methods for recovering residual values from various process streams and hazardous constituents from waste streams. Recently, a technique for concentrating metallics has been successfully reintroduced. Although the concept of the eddy-current separator was developed over a century ago, (Patent 400317 issued to Thomas Edison on March 26, 1889) it was not until this last decade that it gained prominent acceptance. The evolution of permanent magnets has provided a cost effective alternative for the generation of high intensity magnetic fields. High energy permanent magnets have substantially reduced the capital and operating costs over the electromagnetic circuits employed in antecedent eddy-current separators. Specifically, in recent years, the strength of permanent magnets has increased several fold with neodymiun-boron-iron rare earth magnets now providing an energy product of 35 million gauss-oersted. Figure 1 shows the evolution in the strength of permanent magnets. The development of these rare earth magnets has led to the design of circuits possessing a magnetic force an order of magnitude greater than that of conventional permanent magnetic circuits.

The United States is the world's leading producer of phosphate rock. In 1975 according to the U. S. Bureau of Mines' statistics, 44.3 million tonnes (48.8 million short tons) of phosphate rock were produced in the United States', which is 40.6 percent of the world's production2. The major phosphate producing areas of the United States are located in Figure 1 and the production for 1975 is listed as follows: Million Million Short Tonnes Tons Florida and North Carolina 36.9 40.7 Western States 5.3 5.8 Tennessee 2.1 2.3 All of these areas produce phosphate from deposits which are sedimentary marine in origin. Occurrences of phosphate exist throughout the United States in numerous locations that are of both igneous and sedimentary origins. However, these other phosphate occurrences vary greatly in extent and economic significance. Georgia, South Carolina, California, Texas, Arkansas, Kansas, Iowa, Alabama, Kentucky and Virginia are but a few of the states in which phosphate is thought or known to

This presentation will compare actual work site results for the loading and transport of shot rock for two major tunneling projects in North America. "SCARMAR" (the Canadian subsidiary of S & M Construction) is operating a rail bound Hagglund continuous gathering arm loader in combination with a Hagglund nine car shuttletrain system at the West End of Table Mountain on the B.C. Railway project near Tumbler Ridge, Canada. Al Johnson Construction is operating a Hagglund rubber tired continuous gathering arm loader in combination with haul trucks at the Rocky Mountain Pump Storage Project near Rome, GA. This paper will compare: 1) tunnel and ground conditions, 2) the total work cycle as it relates to mucking and haulage 3) efficiencies and related problems with the two systems 4) mucking and haulage rates 5) operating costs, and 6) recommendations for future large tunnel excavations. The effect of initial damage generated by weakly cemented interlayer surfaces on the physico-mechanical properties of layered cemented tailings backfill (LCTB) is considered for the interlayer inclination structure generated by multiple layered backfills in large-scale mining voids. Utilizing the theory of damage mechanics, the damage evolution and constitutive model of LCTB with interlayer inclination is constructed by considering the coupling of interlayer inclination effect and loading. Based on Mitchell’s mechanical model, we analyze the damage mechanism of the inclined cementation surface of LCTB, and derive the expression for the strength of LCTB considering interlayer inclination. The mechanical properties test of LCTB with different inclinations was carried out, and the results showed that the damage model of LCTB established was highly consistent with the experimental curves, which verified the correctness of the model. The initial inclination damage leads to the decrease of adhesive cohesion of cemented surface, and with the increase of inclination, the separation of layered surface, aggravation of misalignment, layered cemented surface is more prone to shear damage, and the mechanical properties of cemented tailings backfill in the lower part of layered surface are not effectively played, which reduces the overall performance of the material.

Earlier we described the uranium mineralogy of an areally broad sampling of Crownpoint ore, including the characterization of organic carbonaceous material associated with the uranium mineral. (1) We also reported on the leaching behavior of Crownpoint ores with a mild alkaline leaching system, oxygen (02)-sodium bicarbonate (NaHC03). (2) There was a wide range of leaching responses, with samples from some areas leaching at a slow rate with low uranium recovery. Evidence indicates that in these samples the organic material is intimately associated with the uranium mineral and shields it to some extent from contact by the leachate. (1,2) One method to obtain faster leach rates and higher recoveries is to use a chemically severe leaching system such as sodium hypochlorite (NaOCI) as an oxidant. (3) The use of sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and an oxidant for leaching ore in surface milling operations is widely practiced to effect high recovery of uranium (U308) from the ore. (4,5,6) The U308 is mobilized as the disulfate complex, U02(S04)224-, or possibly, the trisulfate complex, U02(S04)34-, is the soluble species. (7) Sulfuric acid leachate formulations were used in the first in-situ leaching operation in the Shirley Basin in Wyoming. (8) More recently H2S04 formulations have been used in the Rocky Mountain Energy field tests in the Powder River Basin (Bear Creek) and in the Teapot forma¬tion at Nine Mile Lake site near Casper. (9,10) Laboratory studies related to the use of H2SO4 for in-situ leaching have been reported (11-17) and Yan has .reported packed column leach studies on Crownpoint ore using H2504 and oxidant. INTRODUCTION The U.S. Department of Energy's Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is being constructed to provide permanent storage of radioactive TRU waste materials emanating from military weapons production. These wastes are contaminated with radioactive elements heavier than uranium, thus the name trans-(or beyond) uranic (Uranium wastes). The WIPP site, which is located 26 miles east of Carlsbad, New Mexico, was chosen thru a selection process after the National Academy of Sciences recommended salt deposits as a promising host strata for the storage of radioactive wastes. Throughout the United States numerous DOE facilities have produced and stored defense-generated TRU wastes. Once WIPP becomes operational in the fall of 1989, all sites may ship directly to this repository. A companion project has developed special shipping containers (TRUPACT) for safe transport of materials to WIPP. The WIPP facility is currently composed of surface buildings, three shafts, and underground storage and experimental rooms and tunnels. Frontier-Kemper Constructors, Inc. (FKCI) has nearly completed the construction of the fourth shaft, an intake shaft, to provide additional ventilation to the underground workings. PLANNED SHAFT EXCAVATION METHOD Full-face raise boring ( upreaming ) was the allowable method selected by Frontier-Kemper Constructors for the excavation of the shaft. After arrival of an oil-field type rotary drill rig in December 1987, a 9 inch diameter pilot hole was drilled from the surface to the mine level, a depth of approximately 2145 feet.

Aqueous SO2 (sulfurous acid) is an interesting chemical compound. It functions as a reagent in various hydrometallurgical systems, but also represents an undesirable constituent in pyro- and hydrometallurgical effluent solutions. When present in such streams, SO2 can be oxidized to the more stable sulfate form to avoid exsolution of SO2 as a source of fugitive emissions and to simplify standard water treatment plant operation. This study provides information on the stoichiometry, kinetics and mechanism of SO2 oxidation using oxygen and an iron salt catalyst with solutions containing 0.05 to 20.0 g/l S02. Other test variables include iron salt concentration, oxygen pressure, temperature, degree of agitation and pH.

The requirements of the International Mineral Property Valuation Standards Template (IMVAL Template) (includes Petroleum), 4th edition of April 14, 2021, are based on six principles: 2.1.1 competence, 2.1.2 materiality, 2.1.3 transparency, 2.1.4 objectivity, 2.1.5 independence, and 2.1.6 reasonableness. The IMVAL Template describes “reasonableness” as, “The Valuer must ensure the Reasonableness of the Valuation. Any Valuation, assumptions applied, and any method relied upon should be reasonable within the context of the purpose of the Valuation and the Basis of Value. A method applied to the subject Mineral Property should be within the expected capability and consideration of an assumed likely buyer or lessee of the property.” The IMVAL Template’s Guidance 3.6 on Reasonableness states, “The test of Reasonableness is to consider what appropriately qualified and experienced Valuers, acting reasonably, would conclude in the circumstances. The Valuer must form an opinion that is reasonable in the circumstances, that is, what a Valuer believes is rational and plausible in the circumstances and would be viewed as such if considered by other appropriately qualified and experienced Valuers with the same information and at the same time.” Finally, the IMVAL Template’s Definition 4.26 states Reasonableness “[m]eans that other qualified and experienced Valuers with access to the same information for the same Valuation Date and Basis of Value would consider the Valuer's estimate of Value to be within a reasonable range.”

Because of the tremendous technological advances achieved in recent years in microcomputers, it is not only technically feasible but also economically viable to develop an automatic truck dispatching system using a microcomputer. Such an effort was initiated by the Department of mining and Geological Engineering, University of Arizona in the summer of 1983. Up to date results and experiences prove that today's microcomputers can be economically employed for such a system to be used at small to medium scale open-pit mines. An IBM/XT microcomputer with 10 MB harddisk storage, together with automatic sensing capability of truck movements at several key locations in the pit, formed the core of this system. System software is written primarily in MICROSOFT FORTRAN with supporting subroutines in MACRO assembly language. The software is designed to automatically monitor truck movement throughout the pit, to make heuristic assignments based on expected shovel availability and truck travel times, and to record production statistics. It is currently dimensioned to handle 50 trucks, 10 shovels, 10 dump sites and 3 material types. Due to the lack of funds to purchase the necessary communications hardware, the work related to the automatic sensing of truck movements has not been performed to date. Otherwise, the automatic truck dispatching-system is fully operational on a realtime mode.

Shredding is the usual first step in processing municipal solid waste (MSW) for resource recovery. This unit process requires high capital cost and, usually, considerable maintenance cost. In addition, some shredders at times will render certain components of the MSW in a form difficult to recover. This is particularly true in the way metal cans are distorted and the way glass is pulverized. A trommel screen was proposed (1) to pre-process packer truck refuse prior to shredding. Part of the logic for this step is that the portion of raw refuse already within the specified shredder output particle size range would bypass the primary shredder and proceed directly to further processing, such as to an air classifier or secondary shredder. This would reduce the throughput of the primary shredder and allow certain recoverable materials, such as glass, to remain in larger piece sizes, important for recovery. In this way, operating costs for the shredder would be reduced and the recoverability of materials, and hence the revenue, increased.

To study the fracture evolution of overlying strata for ascending mining in a short-distance coal seam group, a two-dimensional physical simulation model was designed based on a specific geological condition. The fracture development zone was divided into the compaction zone and active zone by monitoring and analyzing the macro fracture evolution of the surrounding rock mass during the excavation of multiple coal seams. The secondary fracture development process of the overlying strata was demonstrated with a physical model. The quantity, length, and inclination of the fracture were calculated with MATLAB software, and the results were verified by geological radar. The total number of fractures between two coal seams increased with a “parabola” shape during the excavation of the lower coal seam, the crack angle was mainly vertical and horizontal, and the number of horizontal cracks first increased and subsequently decreased; the excavation of the upper coal seam caused the secondary fracture development process of the overlying strata, and the relief range and its extent increased. The mining-induced cracks from the lower and upper coal seams connected with each other, especially the permanent vertical fracture in the cutting room side and face side. Finally, the three-dimensional gas fissure was formed.
