OBJECTIVES OF RADIATION MONITORING Monitoring is a tool used in the practice of radiation protection. The primary reasons for monitoring are to reduce radiation exposures to levels that are as low as reasonably achievable and to assure that no individual receives a dose exceeding the maximum individual dose limit. The documentation of radiation doses for legal, medical, or epidemiological reasons is a subordinate function of any monitoring program. The investment in radiation monitoring programs should be guided by four criteria: (1) the detection and avoidance of unnecessary exposures, (2) the magnitude of potential health risks, (3) the determination of combined doses and risks with adequate confidence, and (4) the verification of compliance with established limits. FIRST CRITERION: DOSE REDUCTION - DETECT AND CORRECT UNNECESSARY EXPOSURES The system of dose limitation advocated by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP, 1977), and subscribed to in a broad sense by various regulatory agencies, is comprised of three essential ingredients: (1) [justification] of any practice that produces radiation doses by some commensurate net benefit, (2) [optimization] of radiation control measures by reducing doses to levels that are as low as reasonably achievable, and (3) [limitation] of individual doses to preclude inequities and [moldistribution] of risks. All too often, only the third criterion - the limitation of individual doses to prescribed regulatory limits - is explicitly addressed in everyday radiation protection programs. The emphasis of most exposure control and monitoring efforts appears to be directed toward limiting and documenting individual doses that might approach the legal limit. The first two criteria, i.e. justification and optimization, should contribute to a rationale for allocating monitoring efforts. When applied to individuals, these criteria mean the detection and elimination of unnecessary exposures. This should be a high priority of any monitoring program. Measurements should be directed toward detecting inoperative or ineffective control measures, whether or not there is a risk of exceeding the individual dose limits. The ICRP recommends a procedure that can be used effectively to reduce unnecessary exposures. A n investigation level should be established at an exposure rate substantially lower than the regulatory limit, e.g. 30% of the limit (ICRP 26, 1977, p.33). Measurements obtained during routine monitoring that exceed the investigation level are evaluated with respect to cause and potential reduction. To be effective, the evaluation results should be formally recorded and conveyed both to management and to the workers involved. Although the investigation level recommended by the ICRP is based on a fixed exposure rate or derived air concentration, an equally effective evaluation program may be based on the investigation of a percentage of all measurements. For example, one might investigate the highest 5% or a random selection of all measurements. In any case, the objective is to detect and correct situations that are producing unnecessary exposures. SECOND CRITERION: MONITOR IN PROPORTION TO THE MAGNITUDE OF RISK The ICRP criteria apply generally to all radiation exposures. However, a second priority for monitoring programs should be established on the basis of the nature of the exposures and the magnitude of the health risks involved. Current practices in radiation protection are based on dose limits to specific organs and assessment of individual exposure pathways, with little consideration of the combined doses from various pathways. Although the intent of the ICRP recommendations was to limit the total dose to each critical organ, combined doses from external and internal sources are rarely determined. The recent recommendations of the ICRP (Publ. 26, 1977) are based on the limitation of total health risk from occupational radiation exposures. Implementation of this concept would necessarily require the measurement, calculation and summation of doses and concomitant risks to all organs of the body from all exposure pathways. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has taken the first step toward translating the ICRP recommendations into regulations. The proposed recommendations for Federal Radiation Protection Guidance for Occupational Exposures (USEPA, 1981) include provisions for summing the risk-weighted organ doses to determine compliance with an effective whole-body dose equivalent limit. Whether or not the proposed guidance is modified before final adoption, it seems clear that some version of dose summation and combined risk limitation will be included in future regulations. The Coal Pillar Rib Rating (CPRR) technique has been developed to assist in rib support design in underground coal mines. One major challenge of the data collection process is the measurement of coal strengths in the field. Schmidt hammer has been verified as a useful tool to determine coal strength. An alternative approach is to obtain the representative strength of coal mass by determining the coal lithotypes in the field based on the coal brightness profile by experienced geologists or mining engineers. In this paper, image processing techniques have been used to quantify the texture of coal images of different lithotypes with the purpose of classifying coal lithotypes. The coal images were collected from the pillar ribs with exposed surfaces in underground coal mines, and the coal lithotypes were identified when taking the images. The method of Gray-Level Co-Occurrence Matrix (GLCM) was used to analyze the textures of coal images of different lithotypes, and the texture parameters, such as contrast, homogeneity, energy, and entropy, were compared. The results show that the images of coal with different lithotypes have different textures, which can be quantified through the image processing. The results from this study demonstrate the potential of classifying coal lithotypes using rib photos and easing the data collection process of CPRR.

Kittilä Mine is a gold mine located in Northern Finland, owned and operated by Agnico Eagle Finland. The mining operation started in 2008 with open pits which were completed in 2012 and production moved to being entirely underground. The mine consists of four separate orebodies, currently producing 2.0 Mt per annum, and requiring over 19 km of development on a yearly basis. The principal mining method is long hole stoping with delayed backfill. Microseismic monitoring was initially tested in the Suuri orebody, in the mining block between the 625 and 500 Levels. A small monitoring system was installed in 2018, after observations of stress-induced damage to the rock mass and in anticipation of future mining at greater depth. The initial goals were to evaluate if useful data could be recorded and test the signal quality of different sensor types. Prior to 2018, ground control related challenges in the Suuri and Roura mining blocks had been mostly related to sill pillar mining and block movements between weak graphitic schist planes. Seismic monitoring in the Suuri deposit proved successful for following the rock mass response to mining and helped support the rationale for early monitoring in the new, deeper mining block in Rimpi at 900 m depth. Preliminary geotechnical characterization and testing of the rock mass showed areas of silicification in the footwall rocks with potentially continuous structural features. Seismic monitoring of the Rimpi area has confirmed the brittle behavior of the rock mass, with strong seismic responses induced by stress changes following blasting being recorded. In addition to this expected behavior, a large magnitude event associated with significant damage in the footwall drive development 90 m above the stoping was experienced. Initial investigation of the rockburst showed two separate damage locations with over 300 tons of displaced rock. The seismic monitoring system recorded this rockburst as a single seismic event with magnitude significantly larger than previously recorded. Additional analyses indicated a possible thrust fault event, triggering two separate strainbursts. Following this event, the ground support system was upgraded in parts of the footwall drives to improve dynamic capacity. Ore deposit models are defined largely by physical geologic features that relate conveniently to remote sensing. New Landsat, SPOT, RADARSAT and other multispectral and hyperspectral sensors with improved spatial resolution are currently in development. Near-infrared and thermal airborne hyperspectral scanners hold outstanding promise for both mineral exploration and feasibility stage mapping at potential new mining projects. These scanners are capable of identifying silicification, differentiating silicate alteration types, and mapping compositional variations within igneous and metamorphic complexes. Research in 'mineral and rock spectrometry is helping to advance applications of remote sensing. Hyperspectral scanners are capable of differentiating compositional variations within individual mineral species. Innovative data processing techniques continue to enhance computer software applications and facilitate imagery analysis by the geologist. Today, . remote sensing imagery is commonly integrated with multiple data sets in GIS format to form the core data base for regional exploration programs.

Washington State has a variety of industrial minerals and although not many are produced currently (1982) most have a history of production (table 1). The value of industrial minerals produced in the state exceeds by several times the production value of metallic minerals. In 1981, 15 minerals - cement, limestone, clay, gemstone, pumice, sand and gravel, stone, diatomite, gypsum, olivine, peat, talc, garnet, silica, and dolomite - were produced. Combined value of nonmetallic production for 1981 is estimated at $218,999,000. Cement had the largest estimated value at $102 million, followed by sand and gravel at $47 million, and crushed stone at $29 million. These figures are from the US. The General Purpose Simulation System (GPSS) is a computer simulation language that has been used for simulations of open pit haulage operations since the 60's. It is easy to learn, simple to use, and has a block-diagram structure that is amenable to load-haul systems. However, due to its lack of flexibility, there are situations where another language should be chosen. This paper reviews the characteristics and capabilities of both GPSS and FORTFAN with regard to open pit shovel and truck simulation. The relative advantages and disadvantages are highlighted and a case study presented along with comparative results from two computer models (one written in GPSS and the other written in FORTRAN).

Acid mine drainage is a serious water pollution problem, for its contaminants will eventually effect the quality of the receiving streams. According to the Appalachian Regional Commission (1969)1, 10, 500 miles of streams have been polluted by mine drainage, and 70 percent of this acid pollution is accounted for by underground mines. Due to the severe damage to aquatic life, to recreational and industrial use, and to domestic water supply, more stringent mining and anti-pollution laws have been legislated and coal mine operators are required to treat the mine water discharges to meet the minimum standards. For years now, abatement and treatment methods have been extensively studied. Progress reports presented in the Fourth Symposium on Coal Mine Drainage Research, 1972 1 suggest that a thorough investigation and understanding of the basin discharge is necessary in order to cope with the mine drainage problem. The extent of mine water discharge contamination can be considered as a function of the basin streamflow and acid generation load.' A conservative treatment cost estimation these days is $0.40 per 1, 000 gallons for water with 100 ppm iron, 500 ppm acidity. These figures need not include collection and pumping costs nor the cost of dispersing of chemical waste by-products. To achieve optimal abatement and treatment of mine drainage, predictions of the quantity and quality of mine water discharges are needed. Basin discharge is a continuous process and it can be considered as a. macro-system. This system can be subdivided into micro-systems to describe the various mine discharge .types in the basin. The mining activities could produce acid water discharges from deep mines, stripmines, or associated gob piles. A total study entitled ?Resource Allocation to Optimize Mining Pollution Abatement Programs?* will consider all of these sources. However, this paper will discuss only one micro-system, the drift (deep) mine type. We will look at a single mine and its watershed. The total research project considers a multiple mining complex in an extensive stream basin.

The Bay Park Conveyance Project was one of the largest microtunneling and rehab projects in the United States at the time of completion. The completed project conveys treated water from the South Shore Water Reclamation Facility located in Nassau County, New York, which currently discharges an average of 50 million gallons per day (MGD) of treated water into Reynolds Channel, to the Cedar Creek Water Pollution Control Plant (WPCP) ocean outfall pipe. The pipe carrying treated wastewater was installed approximately 20–60 feet below the surface. The treated wastewater is conveyed via microtunnel construction of a 2-mile long force main from the South Shore Water Reclamation Facility to an existing aqueduct under the Sunrise Highway, the rehabilitation of an 7.3-mile stretch of the aqueduct via sliplining, and construction via microtunnel of a 1.6-mile-long force main to connect the rehabilitated aqueduct to the existing Cedar Creek Water Pollution Control Plant (WPCP) outfall, which discharges and diffuses treated water three miles offshore in the Atlantic Ocean. This paper will review the Design-Build requirements, the chosen innovative solutions during planning for the micro tunneling portion of the project and review the microtunnel construction on the project.

LaModel is a displacement-discontinuity variation of the boundary element method, which is utilized to analyze the displacement and stress in flat-lying, tabular orebodies. In coal mining, the accuracy and reliability of LaModel are proven with the utilization of the Mark- Bieniawski coal pillar strength and the stress gradient formula with proposed methodologies. However, the application of LaModel is limited to coal mines due to the default coal pillar strength properties. Recently, the stress gradient functions have been established and used to derive concentric rings of zones to simulate stone mine pillar yielding in LaModel. Also, to gain a robust understanding of the brittle failure mechanism and its effect on pillar strength, an S-Shaped failure envelope, where rock mass' cohesive and frictional strength components mobilize as a function of confinement (e.g., minimum principal stress), has been implemented into FLAC3D software. Therefore, by employing brittle failure criteria, the pillar strength stages at various width-to-height ratios and different pillar dimensions are estimated for four benching stages. The estimated pillar strengths and stress gradients for benching conditions are then used to calibrate LaModel in-seam material properties and compare stresses computed by LaModel and FLAC3D. Consequently, this study aims to increase the safety measures in the stone mining industry by implementing the practical use of LaModel for underground stone mines' initial development to various stages of bench mining.

INTRODUCTION The Morenci-Metcalf district is located on the southern slope of the white Mountains in Greenlee County, Arizona. Both porphyry copper deposits are four to six miles northwest of Clifton, the county seat, and the new Metcalf mine is situated approximately one mile northeast of the Morenci open pit (Figure 1). Chase Creek, a south-flowing tributary of the San Francisco River, dissects the district and separates the two ore bodies. More than 1,200 exploration and development drill holes have been completed in the district and the Morenci-Metcalf ore bodies have been delineated on a 400-foot grid. Recently initiated drilling programs have revealed new data about deeper protore and associated hypogene alteration. This information, correlated with surface mapping and petrographic studies, was utilized to propose a plausible geochronologic sequence for this region. The reasoning behind this study has been helpful in locating new ore beneath leached capping indicative of only protore mineralization. The scope of this paper is to establish a practical solution to a highly theoretical problem of ore genesis and to familiarize the reader with stratigraphic, structural, and mineralogic events responsible for localizing ore in this district. Continued research will possibly alter the proposed time span and relative displacements, but it is doubtful that the order of events will vary significantly. Numerous underground coal mine ventilation seals have been installed in the United States of America prior to 2006 and after implementation of the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response (MINER) Act. Seal engineering, design, placement, and construction is regulated in industry, but post-construction monitoring of seals is limited to visual inspection of the outby face and seal perimeter, convergence measurement, and atmospheric monitoring. To monitor seal integrity and to provide safe working conditions, a form of non-destructive testing (NDT) is necessary to accurately reflect the health of the seal by detecting post-construction changes, deterioration, or defects within in-situ seals in underground coal mines. Previous research from the National Institute of Safety and Health (NIOSH) has indicated the potential for utilizing ground penetrating radar (GPR) for assessing in-situ mine seals. This paper provides an update to the assessment of proposed NDT methods for seal evaluation using commercially available GPR technologies and systems. Full-scale free-standing seals and large-scale seal specimens were analyzed with an array of GPR units from various manufactures using multiple frequencies.

There is a critical need for effective instructional materials at the university level and for an upgrading of mine safety and health in the mining engineering curriculum. A fundamental approach to mine safety and health is recast into the familiar 3 E's: engineering, education, and enforcement, in that order. Each is briefly reviewed and their interdependence emphasized. A unique philosophy for successfully integrating safety and health principles into the mining engineering curriculum is offered. The concept of textbook ?tailoring? is discussed and defended, permitting rapid assemblage and synthesis of existing educational materials. Final recommendations are made for a u, comprehensive approach to mine safety and health education in the undergraduate curriculum.

Most of the future phosphate resources in Florida, which accounts for 70  percent of production in the United States, are contaminated with too much dolomite that is difficult to remove with existing industrial practices. The low-grade ore quality coupled with increased phosphate demand is of concern to the Florida phosphate industry. In order to resolve the dolomite issue, various beneficiation technologies were designed and evaluated, but none have been sufficiently successful [1]. 

When solid pillar is not left to separate different mining levels in underground mine with high dip angle deposit, waste rock in the backfilled stope could be a safety hazard to future mining activities on levels above or below the backfill. Different backfill methods can be used to eliminate this hazard according to the deposit shape and mining method. Building concrete pillar in ore drift of each mining level is one of them. Concrete pillar had been constructed in underground mines based on operational experience. Little design literature and pillar performance data can be found. At Great Basin Gold Hollister Mine, over two thousand feet of concrete pillar had been constructed. The project started with engineering design which combined civil engineering concrete design and the specialties of underground construction. Time Domain Reflectometry technique was installed to monitor the pillar movement and concrete cylinder samples were collected and tested for quality control. Engineering design, underground construction, quality control and concrete pillar monitoring, as well as precious concrete mixing data from years of experience are fully covered in this paper to give a general frame of concrete pillar method.

One of the most significant advances in Mineral Processing in recent years, is the development of the selective flocculation technology. The technology is primarily aimed at recovering the mineral values from ultrafine ore suspensions. This is achieved by selectively aggregating the mineral particles in question to such size as to enable their effective separation from the suspension. Selective flocculation utilizes the differences in the physical-chemical properties of the various mineral components in the mixed suspension. It is based on the preferential ad- sorption of an organic flocculant on the particular solids to be flocculated, leaving the remainder of the particles in suspension. In order to understand the mechanics of this process, selective flocculation may be divided into four major sub processes; these being: ore slurry dispersion, in which all the particles are stably and uniformly distributed in the suspension with the individual particles being essentially separate; flocculant selective adsorption and floc formation; floc conditioning, which aims at obtaining flocs with desire properties for their subsequent separation and with minimum entrapment of dispersed particles; and floc separation from the suspension. These sub processes will be reviewed later in this article.

Semi-autogenous, (SAG), milling operations can realize substantial Increases in mill throughput by removing and crushing critical size, slow grinding, material from the SAG mill. Full-scale plant testwork showed that modifying the Kidston SAG/ball circuit to a semi-autogenous-ball milling-crushing (SABC) circuit would increase plant throughput by 25 to 30%. The methods used to determine the value of the SABC circuit and the design of the circuit are discussed.

This paper identifies the components of belt conveyor shifting force as a vertical force. Pv, horizontal force, Ph, and longitudinal force, P1. A method for estimation of these forces is proposed, which relates their value to the properties of the conveyor structure and rails, shifting operation parameters, and other site-specific conditions. The effect of this force on shifter behaviour is analysed and guidelines are developed for selection of a suitable shifter. Also discussed are the requirements of the shifting operation for other equipment.

On the Earth's Moon, obvious hazards to humans and machines are created by extreme temperature fluctuations, low gravity, and the virtual absence of any atmosphere. The most important other environmental factor is ionizing radiation. Less obvious environmental hazards that must be considered before establishing a manned presence on the lunar surface are the hazards from micrometeoroid bombardment, the nuisance of electro-statically-charged lunar dust, and an alien visual environment without familiar clues. Before man can establish lunar bases and lunar mining operations, and continue the exploration of that planet, we must develop a means of mitigating these hazards.

The North Shore 9 Collector System comprised an integral part of the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewer District's Water Pollution Abatement Program. The project required the construction of 1,490 m of tunnel, ranging from 1.5 m to 4.6 m in diameter along three separate alignments beneath arterial streets traversing Milwaukee's central business and cultural districts. This paper details the various aspects of the tunnel drives which were accomplished using two Lovat EPB type TBMs in conjunction with pipe-jacking procedures. Shaft configurations developed for the project, including ancillary subsidence mitigation components and portal pressurization facilities are discussed. Anomalies in observed soil behavior at variance with the parameters delineated in the project's geotechnical report are addressed.

Settling a contract for process design involves a negotiation between the design engineers and the client. Clients wish to offload as much risk as possible by seeking various guarantees about the process performance. Design engineers respond with preconditions and qualifiers, believing that the risk must remain with those who stand to benefit. This paper presents the engineers? point of view on guarantee types and precedents, performance testing, damages that may be claimed, and remedies that can be provided with particular reference to the mining industry.
