One of the major problems of mineral exploration is the ability to reliably distinguish between uneconomic mineral deposits and economic mineralization. While the mining industry uses many geophysical methods to locate the mineral deposits, until recently, there was no reliable technology for mineral resources identification and characterization. The main goal of this project is to develop a new geophysical technique for subsurface material characterization, mineral exploration and mineral discrimination, based on electromagnetic methods. The proposed new technique is based on examining the spectral induced polarization effects in electromagnetic data using the modern distributed acquisition systems and advanced methods of 3-D modeling and inversion. The recovered parameters of the relaxation model will be used for the discrimination of different rocks, and in this way will provide an ability to distinguish between uneconomic mineral deposits and zones of economic mineralization using geophysical remote sensing technology (Zonge, 1976). The proposed research and development is undertaken using multi-partner collaboration between the University of Utah, four major mining companies, Kennecott Exploration, BHP Billiton World Exploration Inc., Placer Dome Inc., Phelps Dodge Exploration, and Zonge Engineering Inc., which is equipment manufacturer and service provider to the mining industry. The multi-partner collaboration between the academic institution, the University of Utah, and mining industry helps to identify the appropriate mining target and conduct the field experiment for practical demonstration of the developed new technology, which is an important part of the this project.

This study developed machine learning (ML) models for predicting rock formation reactive forces experienced by a hydraulic shovel bucket during excavation. To do this, rock formation in the form of muckpile was modeled as granular ball elements in three-dimensional particle flow code (PFC) using linear bonding logic. A typical field-size hydraulic shovel bucket modelled in AutoCAD was used to excavate the rock formation and the three-dimensional shovel bucket resistive forces required to cut through the rock formation were measured and recorded. The experiments involved different muckpile height, bulk densities, repose angles, and average fragment size. Six ML algorithms, artificial neural network (ANN), K-nearest neighbor (KNN), linear, random forest (RF), regression tree (RT), and support vector machine (SVM), were evaluated on their ability to predict the shovel bucket resistive forces. The input variables used for the prediction of the resistive forces were the muckpile bulk density, angle of repose, height, and fragment size. The results showed that the ML techniques are useful and reliable methods of predicting rock formation resistive forces based on the rock formation properties. This research is a preliminary step towards developing reliable models for accurate prediction of excavation forces/torques which could potentially enhance hydraulic shovel process automation.

The reconstruction of the British mining industry which began shortly after nationalisation in 1947 continued until well into the 1950s with the support of the Government. This support diminished as plentiful supplies of cheap oil from the middle East made many coalmines un¬economic. The planned rundown which followed was foreshadowed in the 1965 White Paper which outlined the financial measures to speed the closure of uneconomic collieries. The decline appeared likely to continue into the 21st century as the role of coal in UK energy requirements became less and less significant. This policy was well on course in 1973 when the oil crisis led to a complete reappraisal of the position. A Government examination in 1974 of the coal industry then supported the National Coal Board's general strategy of major capital investment as set out in its 'Plan for Coal' (1). Plan for Coal aimed at halting the intended decline in the industry's capacity and restoring it to 120 million tons of deep mined output in 1985. The Plan proposed action along the following lines (a) increase output by major Investment in construction at existing collieries with sufficient reserves to give 13 million tons per annum extra output (b) invest in extending the life of existing collieries by gaining access to additional reserves, to give 12 million tons per annum extra output © by sinking new mines, produce an extra 20 million tons per annum. Figure 1 shows the contribution (2) expected from each of the three sources up to 1990/1. The measures taken were expected to offset the inevitable exhaustion of existing pits and provide the additional 40-42 million tons capacity needed to restore annual output in 1985 to 120 million tons. Parallel to this programme for expansion of deep mined output, opencast mining was to produce 10-15 million tons per annum. A recent review however, indicates that new mines are likely to yield only 10 million tons per annum by 1985, mainly owing to the need for public inquiries into proposals for new mining and the resultant fact that planning approval takes 'much longer than originally expected. Nevertheless the objective of 120 million tons deep mined output by 1985 is still considered achievable of means of a greater contribution from existing mines. This programme was originally estimated to cost 2,-56 million dollars at March 1974 prices, out revised estimates of the cost of Plan for Coal indicate that it may now exceed 6,960 million dollars at mid-1977 prices. Plan for Coal includes a substantial investment in new and reconstructed coal preparation plaints. At mid-1977 prices more than 322 million dollars Ls so be invested in coal preparation projects in the UK, at the rate of, about 70 million dollars a year. This rate 3f capital expenditure has been maintained over the past three years and covers investment in a wide range of coal preparation coals for the power station, coking and domestic markets.

The McDonald gold project and two satellite gold deposits near Lincoln, MT were discovered in the early 1990s. They contain at least 307.9 t (9.9 million oz) of gold and 933 t (30 million oz)of silver. The McDonald gold deposit alone contains 223.9 t (7.2 million oz) of gold reserves that can be open-pit mined and processed by cyanide heap leaching at a projected cash operating cost of $6.10/g ($190/oz). The deposit is predominantly oxidized with no chance of acid production. It can be mined, operated and reclaimed with minimal permanent environmental disturbance other than the creation of an open-pit filled with a fresh-water lake that would support trout.

"Use of the Bond Work Index to size industrial grinding equipment was widely known. Bond also described its application for measuring grinding circuit efficiency. Bond Work Index efficiency has been widely used by industry, but until now without concise standard methods, or a formal guideline, for doing so. The Bond Efficiency Sub-Committee of the Industrial Comminution Efficiency work group of GMSG has produced such a guideline, which follows. It covers the methods and provides examples of how to calculate the Bond Work Index Efficiency of most industrial grinding circuits. Bond Work Index testing equipment and methods are also provided. The next steps are: (1) to establish standard reference testing materials and one or more laboratories to serve as bases for reference testing; (2) to establish the accuracy of relative circuit Work Index Efficiency determinations; and (3), to develop and provide a public data base of industrial comminution circuit Bond Work Index Efficiencies. "Sampling is the process of taking a small portion of an article such that the consistency of the portion shall be representative of the whole," (Baxter and Parks, 1939)."An orebody is a mixture of minerals in proportions that vary in different parts of the mass. As a consequence, the proportion of contained metals also varies from place to place. Therefore, a single sample taken in any particular place would not contain the same proportion of metals as does the orebody as a whole except by a highly improbable coincidence."The probable error, which would be very large if only one sample were taken, decreases with the number of samples, but it never disappears completely unless the samples are so numerous and so large that their aggregate is equal to the orebody itself, in which case the orebody would be completely used up in the process of sampling."Since carrying sampling to such an extreme would defeat its own purpose, some probable error is always present in actual cases and the practical objective is to reduce this probable error to allowable limits. This means balancing the number of samples against the desired accuracy; if there are not enough samples the result is unreliable; if there are too many, the time and expense of taking them is excessive." (McKinstry, et al., 1948).In an actual orebody, the accuracy of sampling depends not only on the number of samples but also on their proper distribution throughout the orebody, for it would obviously be incorrect to take all of the samples either in a rich part or a lean part. SUMMARY A review is presented of the state of development of high pressure water jet equipment and of large impact hammers for rock tunneling. Information from the U.S.S.R. is based on published literature and three personal visits. Applicable papers which were presented at the International Symposium on Jet Cutting Technology in Coventry, England in April 1972 are reviewed. Data are presented on continuous jet systems, pulsed water cannons, and hydraulic-powered impact hammers with respect to the specific energy of rock breakage and potential application in tunneling machines. INTRODUCTION It has been estimated that the cost of underground excavation during the period 1970-1979 in 15 countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development will be over $54 billion, an increase of 104% over the period 1960-1969. It is expected that 55% of the tunneling construction will occur in hard rock (Ref. 1). Present tunneling machines are generally limited to soft and medium-hard rock. When used in hard rock, the cost of replacing mechanical cutter bits is high. The copper mines of Michigan are all in the northern part of that state on the Keweenaw Peninsula, which extends from the (Michigan) mainland for about seventy miles northeasterly toward the middle of Lake Superior. The mines occur in a belt or zone occupying the central portion of the peninsula from end to end.. The most productive mines for many years past have been those located not far from the city of Houghton in' the central part of the zone, in a section extending about ten miles southwest of Houghton and fifteen miles northeast. The most important mines in order of location, from the northeast to south¬west, are the following: Mohawk, Ahmeek, Allouez, North Kearsarge, Wolverine, South Kearsarge, Centennial, Calumet. and Hecla, Osceola, Franklin, Quincy, Hancock, Isle Royale, Superior, Baltic, Trimountain, and Champion. The first three named are in Keweenaw county and all of the others are in Houghton county. Still farther to the southwest are the Lake, Mass, Adventure, Michigan, Victoria, and White Pine mines. These are in Ontonagon county.History. The exploitation of these copper mines extends back into prehistoric times. There is little evidence that the American Indians carried on mining operations in this region in the period shortly before the advent of white men, but there is abundant evidence that the ancestors of the Indians, •or some earlier inhabitants of the region, carried on primitive mining operations. On the basis of preliminary data, production was 1 Mt (1.1 million st) with an estimated value of $47 million. Production increased by 3 percent in tonnage from 973 kt (1.1 million st) with a value of $45.1 million in 2012. Tennessee was the leading producer state accounting for 64 percent of domestic production, followed by Texas, Mississippi and Kentucky. In a mineral processing plant there are a number of routine decisions which are based at least in part on the plant's metallurgical performance. Among these are those related to: 1) equipment functioning properly 2) suitable operating conditions 3) reagents achieving desired results 4} determining operating response to changes in ore 5) defining circuits offering potential for improvement A step beyond the routine, are the periodic management evaluations of operating supervision and technical assistance, which are based largely on profit -a direct function of are availability, metallurgical performance and operating costs. The "yardstick", excuse me -"meterstick", by which performance is best measured is the plant metallurgical balance, which tells not only what was produced but how it was produced. Since this metallurgical balance is directly related to both plant profits and individual rewards, it is only reasonable to make that "meterstick" as precise as humanly possible.

The scheelite concentrate was leached with a mixture of sulfuric and oxalic acids. Chemical compositions, mineral phases, and morphology were characterized by XRF, XRD, and SEM–EDS. Based on the results of the single-factor experiments, the response surface methodology (RSM) was chosen to optimize the leaching parameters: temperature, time, and concentrations of sulfuric and oxalic acids. The RSM results indicate that the optimum values for those parameters are as follows: temperature 72 ℃, sulfuric acid concentration 1.48 mol/L, oxalic acid concentration 0.96 mol/L, and reaction time 2 h. Under the optimal leaching conditions, the model predicts a maximum leaching yield of 99.5%, compared to the value of 99.1% obtained experimentally, that is, a discrepancy of only 0.04%. This good correlation shows that the quadratic polynomial equation obtained by the RSM optimization is reliable. The importance on leaching parameters of scheelite is, in decreasing order, temperature, time, sulfuric acid concentration, and oxalic acid concentration.

An orebody is a mining company's greatest asset; without it there can be no mine. Yet, by the very nature of the industry, orebodies are wasting assets whose progressive depletion must be balanced by continued discovery of new ore to enable both the industry to survive and the raw material demands of society to be satisfied. Although mineral exploration may be viewed as any activity which leads to the creation of investment opportunities in the mineral industry, ultimately new ore can only be generated through discovery. The process leading to discovery may involve a long chain of independent and interdependent events. It will almost always be repetitious and require the examination of many prospects or trials before the goal, a commercially successful discovery, is satisfied. Long term survival of a mining company through regular discovery of new ore, requires a continued commitment of funds and effort to mineral exploration.

Industries in general and the mining industry in particular have become more safe than ever before. However, there is a need to increase the search for the causes of mining work-related injuries and to contribute to their reduction through job design, work procedures, and worker training. Mine accident and hazard control has to be practiced in a manner which is consistent with the overall objectives of the mine management, among which are the optimum allocation and effective utilization of the resources. The purposes of this paper are to (i) review the role risk analysis in safety management with references from mining and other industries; (ii) discuss the risk measures appropriate for injury analysis; (iii) present a set of analytical tools to injury experience data in under-ground coal mines; (i v) apply these tools on case study example; (v) discuss the results of the case study; and (vi) amplify the application limitations and the future research needs.

This paper explores the impact of the significant difference between the number of geochemical assays conducted for grade estimation and the number of comminution tests performed for throughput and performance forecasting. Both grade and throughput are key factors in determining the project. We analysed 154 feasibility study reports to assess the impact of sample frequency for comminution test work on project revenue. This disparity in size between assay and comminution data arises because geological and resource-grade risks cannot be managed without extensive geochemical testing, whereas comminution risks are traditionally mitigated through design methods and the use of contingencies. This approach is partly due to the relatively high cost and large sample requirements associated with traditional comminution tests. Our analysis demonstrates that insufficient comminution sampling and testing leads to uncertainties in throughput forecasts, creating significant financial risks. Data from the feasibility studies show that a 1% change in mill throughput can result in up to a 5% variation in Net Present Value (NPV), underscoring the sensitivity of project economics to operational performance. Building on previous work, we reference studies that reveal how low frequency of comminution testing can increase uncertainty in mill throughput forecasts and increase financial risks. We propose an approach that optimises the number of comminution samples tested to enhance forecast accuracy and reduce NPV variance. By adopting this approach, mining projects can improve financial reliability and mitigate risks associated with underperformance in SAG and AG mill-based operations.

Very few mineral properties spend their entire lifespans from discovery to depletion in the hands of one owner. More likely, properties will have several owners, and partial interests may change quite often. Similarly, mineral companies are bought and sold with frequency, in recent years at what appears to be an accelerating rate. The reasons for selling a property can be manifold -need for additional capital in other parts of the business, need for development capital, realization of a large gain at a perceived high point in the market, pessimistic commodity outlook, retirement of principals, or resolution of estate problems. Regardless of the reasons for a sale, there are specific steps that logically follow. Spruce up the business, package the information, market the property, negotiate the terms, close the sale, and make sure it stays sold. Adherence to certain very basic ground rules in property sales can maximize the profits and minimize the effort.

"Cyanide heap leaching of gold ores in areas with extremely low winter temperatures requires special considerations to prevent freezing of the leach solution. Factors that impact the solution temperature include ore temperature at the time of stacking and during operation, burial of drip irrigation lines, use of geomembrane covers and heating of the leach solution. Thermodynamic modeling was performed to simulate expected ore and solution temperatures under different operating strategies for Kaminak Gold’s Coffee gold project in the Yukon Territory. Mean monthly temperatures at the site ranged from a low of -22.5 °C (-8.5 °F) to a high of 13.6 °C (56.4 °F), while in situ ore temperatures ranged from -0.5° to about -1.5 °C (31 ° to 29 °F). The modeling results were used to optimize the operational parameters and indicated that a combination of drip line burial and heating of the leach solution during the winter months was required to maintain solution temperatures above freezing during the initial years of stacking, although as the size of the heap increased, heating was no longer necessary.Modeling objectivesThe successful operation of a cyanide heap leach under extremely cold winter temperatures requires the implementation of operational strategies to prevent freezing of the leach solution and the ore within the heap. At the kernel of the subject is due diligence in major decision-making, that is, where major money amounts and a large corporate commitment are at stake. The "due diligence" means how carefully we do our homework before making the decision. The homework or feasibility study addresses different parts of the decision. In the industrial minerals business the study seeks to uncover the pros and cons in: o The mineral reserves, quantity, quality, mineability, access, etc. o The environmental impact of mining, processing and transporting. o The economics of operations. o Financial aspects o Legal aspects o Many other aspects o And -oh yes! the marketing aspects.

Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) issues are very high profile currently in both Australian coal and metal mines and Australian states are generally moving to acknowledge and to broadly follow US 2008 final metal/non metal mine regulation limits of 0.2 mg/m3 submicron particulate matter, 0.16 mg/m3 total carbon particulate and 0.1 mg/m3 elemental carbon particulate. The real time DPM monitor is being developed on the base of the successful Personal Dust Monitor (PDM) unit. The objectives of recently completed Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) study has been to finalize the design of a DPM unit, to undertake comprehensive and internationally recognized laboratory testing to evaluate the new design and to undertake an underground series of tests to establish the robustness and reliability of the new approach. Under the project Thermo Fisher Scientific has undertaken structural changes to the PDM to convert it to a DPM real time monitoring underground instrument, the D-PDM. The Pennsylvania Pittsburgh Research Laboratories of NIOSH (the group that originally contracted for the PDM development) has undertaken laboratory ?calibration or verification? testing. A phase of Australian mine robustness and engineering testing has been undertaken to ensure the instrument can effectively assist mine management to handle this health issue. Tests have been undertaken at points of expected high atmospheric DPM such as during Longwall face moves, Development RAM car, Eimco and PJB usages. The paper discusses how the monitors have performed within the underground mine environment in evaluating DPM during the various phases of the production cycle. They have closely examined the influence of aspects of the mine ventilation system. Results have been compared to alternative industry pollutant measuring approaches. The outcome of the project gives the industry access to an enhanced tool for understanding the mine atmosphere in the presence of DPM. Real time DPM monitoring will allow the industry to pin-point high exposure zones such as those encountered in coal longwall face moves where various vehicles work or in areas of constrained or difficult ventilation. Identifying of high DPM concentration zones allows efficient modification of work practices to reduce underground miners? exposure. Some outcomes of the ACARP project in this area will be discussed.

Airborne coal mine dust is an unintended and unavoidable result of coal extraction operations that raises notable health and safety concerns. Modern mining techniques utilize several dust mitigation strategies, and the flooded-bed dust scrubber (FBS) is one such technology used extensively on continuous miners. The conventional static panel filter, instrumental in most scrubber designs, is fundamentally limited in collection efficiencies due to a high clogging rate and a tradeoff between mesh density and airflow rate. To overcome these deficiencies, a novel vibrating mesh panel is proposed. In this study, a laboratory-scale dust scrubber unit was used to investigate the efficacy of concept as compared to that of a static mesh. A statistical design of experiments study was first used to determine the effective vibrational parameters and scrubber operational parameters on dust collection and clogging mitigation. Optimized results from this study were then evaluated against those of a static mesh to determine performance improvement while investigating the mechanisms controlling dust collection and particle department through the scrubber system. Results show that the vibrating mesh conditions and higher water flow rates led to an improvement in the collection efficiency of the scrubber system. Compares to a static-mesh, the vibrating mesh FBS showed a significant reduction in pressure drop across the mesh screen indicating lower air loss through the test duration. Overall, the findings confirm that vibrating filter mesh reduces filter clogging while maintaining high collection efficiencies. This research supports further technological advancement in mine dust mitigation technologies.

The use of the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) regional meetings as a forum to educate teachers on the role of minerals in our society has been immeasurably successful. Each year, on average about 3,500 to 4,000 teachers participate in each of the three regional NSTA meetings. At each of these meetings, nearly 2,000 teachers visit the “Minerals Coalition Booth” and receive free mineral samples and other educational support materials. Some rules of thumb for a successful booth at the NSTA are provided. Considering the level of effort for such a booth, are there alternatives? The NSTA also organizes a national annual meeting with attendance of about 20,000. All who have participated in a regional NSTA agree that the traditional approach of providing a mineral set and teacher materials for a substantial fraction of the 20,000 attendees is not feasible. Conceptual alternatives for minerals education at the national NSTA meeting are introduced and evaluated.
