During that time, federal programs, sponsored by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), the Office of High Speed Ground Transportation (OHSGT) and the Advanced Research Projects Administration (ARPA), stimulated tunnel research and development. Also, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and SME collaborated to create the Underground Construction Research Council (UCRC) and the Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC) series.

Introduction After two decades of contraction and consolidation, the uranium industry has seen a recent major expansion. Rapidly increasing uranium prices and the ability to raise speculative capital in share markets worldwide have brought over 300 new participant companies into the uranium industry: “juniors” as they are known. These companies participated in a global land rush for known deposits as well as for prospective land positions in order to secure a “piece of the action” for their respective portfolios. Mostly publicly-traded companies, these “juniors” have captured the attention of world’s investing public with spectacular gains; as much as 1,000s of percent in less than four years. The initial phase is over, however, and these companies must now prove that they can be successful in exploration or production.

The depletion of bauxite reserves around the world has necessitated the search for viable alternative sources of aluminum. The major non-bauxite source of aluminum is alunite [KAl3 (SO4)2(OH)6]. Lixiviation is the common industrial process to recover aluminum from alunite. Due to the presence of quartz (40%) as the main gangue mineral, this process causes the formation of Sodium aluminosilicate and Potassium aluminosilicate complexes that leads to loss of alunite, and chemical reagents. Thus, pre-concentration of alunite is required to remove the gangue minerals. Because of the low degrees of freedom (DOF) of alunite, froth flotation, as a preconcentration method, is a viable alternative to increase selectivity in downstream processes. In this work, the possibility of Alunite preconcentration with micro flotation and mechanical flotation cells was studied. The influence of type and dosage of collector, pH, solid percent, particles sizes were considered on the flotation. Flotation tests were designed based on Taguchi method, followed by performing based on surface charge differential between alunite and quartz on direct and revers flotation. In the reverse flotation, Ca+ 2 and Ba+ 2 were used to activate the quartz surface. Under optimum conditions of reverse flotation, alunite grade and recovery were 40% and 62.1% respectively. In the direct flotation, the surface of alunite was activated by F- . The grade and recovery were 50 and 89%, respectively.

The present article reports the recovery of potassium from mica scrap using carbide lime waste and NaCl. The acid leaching of mica [4 M H2SO4 at 90 °C] can recover a maximum of 25% potassium. However, in the chlorination roasting (with CLW and NaCl) water leaching process, it was possible to recover potassium to the tune of 94% [900 °C, 50 min roasting; mica:CLW:NaCl 1:0.75:1]. The formation of water-soluble phase like sylvite (KCl) and water-insoluble phases like anorthite ( CaAl2Si2O8) and nepheline ( NaAlSiO4) confirms the complete breakdown of the mica crystal structure. The extraction mechanism proceeds with the formation of a transition state followed by the release of potassium as KCl. The characterisation studies using ICP-OES, XRD, FTIR and FESEM support the proposed extraction mechanism. The salt produced by the evaporation of roast-leached liquor confirms the presence of sylvite and halite only, which can be separated to get the fertiliser grade KCl.

No other region of the world is enjoying the tremendous growth of power use that is currently being experienced in Asia. Fortunately for the coal industry — particularly in Asia — the power plants being planned or under construction are designed to use coal as fuel. This has produced a significant increase in the demand for steam coal that, in turn, has encouraged many in the industry to develop new coal mines. Indonesia is a country that has enjoyed substantial growth in coal production. This developing country has 195 million people who live on the nearly 13,000 islands. It has quickly emerged as the third-largest exporter of steam coal, following only Australia and South Africa. Almost all coal in Indonesia is mined by surface-mining methods.

The authors have developed a com¬puter-assisted critical path planning and scheduling model to help reduce time required to move longwall mining units. The model includes time constraints and limited resource constraints, such as manpower, machinery, supplies, work space, and transportation routes. Outstanding results were achieved on the first move to which the computer-model pas applied; e.g., downtime due to the move was cut by 50%. The model and the schedules developed using it provide an excellent blueprint for future moves and have led to significant savings in time and costs for Emery Mining Corporation, Huntington, Utah.

In spite of the deflationary state of the minerals business today, there will be opportunities for those who can fulfill future needs. Since there are abundant supplies of ores and fuels to keep prices down, at least in peacetime scenarios, future needs may be as much political and social as technical and economic. Engineers and economists will develop new and innovative ways to find, mine, process and pay for mineral deposits. Pressure from governments and non-governmental organizations and the public will combine with market forces to provide opportunities for highly competitive, risk-taking enterprises who can leverage the qualities of their orebodies and employees by being good neighbors and partners.

The geological and geostatistical modeling of mineral deposits requires densely sampled drillholes that provide accurate and reliable hard data. Furthermore, quantifying orebody uncertainty through geostatistical simulation can allow mining engineers to assess long-term risk in mine planning. Nevertheless, ore deposits can sometimes lack dense drillhole information, reliable hard data with proper quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC), or sometimes both. This study is based on a coal mine located in the Republic of Kazakhstan, where an iron dataset is based on data from three newly drilled drillholes, and geological information comes from a massive collection of legacy drillhole data with no evidence of proper QA/QC. For this reason, a workflow was introduced to construct a representative training image from legacy data and stochastically model geological domains within these three drillholes using a multiple-point geostatistics technique. Once the geological model was obtained, a two-point geostatistics algorithm was applied to model the iron inside each geological domain. The direct sampling algorithm was chosen for modeling geological domains, and sequential Gaussian simulation for iron grade calculation. Both methods were extensively evaluated using different statistical tools and analyses.

The title of this session is "Wall Street Looks at the Mining Industry," and I am going to attempt to answer the question: Shouldn't Mining Stocks Sell at Higher Price Levels? Or, What Does Wall Street See When Looking at the Mining Industry? Well, it sees a capital intensive business, a technical industry, and a growing industry becoming more vertically integrated. But, at the same time, Wall Street sees a cyclical industry, a fragmented industry of erratic earnings, spotty public relations, a feast-or-famine business where the public usually does not differentiate between coal mining or metal mining, and does not appreciate either the risks or the rewards. As a result, mining stocks generally sell at relatively low price learnings ratios in comparison to other industrial groups. This PIE ratio, the current market price of the capital stock divided by annual earnings per share, is probably the most popular index of a stock's value. The average of the price/ earnings ratios of the 30 stocks comprising the Dow Jones Industrial Average is over 14. This diverse group of stocks is widely regarded as being a cross-section and representative of the industrial companies listed on the New York Stock Exchange. However, in comparison to 14, Asarco and Kennecott shares are currently available for about 8 times annual earnings. Even discounting earnings from South America, the stock of these two companies sells at only 10 times earnings. Of course, Peruvian politics is currently preventing Cerro shares from selling above 6 times earnings, and Chilean politics keeps Anaconda shares at a PIE multiple of 7. However, even in better times, these companies rarely sell above 10 times earnings. American Metal Climax and Newmont sell at only 11 times earnings as does Phelps Dodge and St. Joseph Lead. It aims to secure America?s future supply of rare-earth-dependent technologies by developing a strong domestic rare earth industry. Molycorp identifies rare-earth-dependent technologies as those that cannot be produced without rare earth materials. The list of these technologies is long and growing. It encompasses everything from personal electronics and batteries for hybrid cars to permanent magnet generator wind turbines and national defense applications.

The indium recovery via electrowinning from sulfate baths has recently gained significant attention as it does not present toxic emissions, hermetically sealed system requirements, human health, and environmental hazards. Following previous works related to the optimization process for AISI 316L and Ni cathode, it was observed significant importance of the metal supports on the input and output parameters of the indium electrowinning process from sulfate solutions. Thus, comparing input and output parameters in both cases seems very interesting. Particularly, regarding the input parameters, the attention has been focused on the electrolyte composition, current density, and temperature, while productivity, morphology, and structure have been considered regarding the output parameters. Considering the productivity as the optimal output, the findings for Ni cathode were better than that for AISI 316L in most of the selected conditions studied. In the case of morphology, indium grains appear rounded and dendritic on the AISI 316L, while those on the Ni cathode show stratified lamellar grains. Anyway, the indium deposit obtained on Ni cathode shows bigger grains independently from the used operative conditions with respect to that on AISI 316L. Regarding the structure, it is clearly tetragonal, but preferential orientation, crystallinity, and deformation of the structure strongly depend on the metal support.

Interest in 26 prospective and 46 potential Opencast sites ? Approximately 417 million tonnes of proven and probable reserves and considerable mineral resource ? 9 million tonnes of coal stocks ? Long term contracts to supply approximately 90 million tonnes of coal to National Power and PowerGen to the period of 3 March 1998 ?Approximately 7,600 employees and 4,500 mining contractual labour. Up to the acquisition RJB Mining had the capacity to produce 14 million tonnes of saleable output with an approximate 1,500 strong workforce.

To many people, rescue from elevated, sometimes vertical, locations brings about thoughts of heroism mixed with brawn and self-sacrifice. Images are conjured of cliff rescues where the technical effort is hanging from a few seemingly small nylon ropes hundreds of feet above the ground. Such is the vertical realm of technical rope rescue. This is a technical field in which the author serves professionally as battalion chief of (rope) operations for a northern Arizona fire district, and as a private sector instructor to mines in the United States and Canada.

The objective was to determine operating protocols for a lead and silver column flotation cleaner, being considered for installation at Sunshine Mining & Refining Co.’s Kellogg mill in Northern Idaho. In this column, tetrahedrite and galena were floated, and pyrite and other gangue minerals, including siderite and silica, were depressed. The procedure was to develop a dynamic simulation using a linear transfer function approach. The transfer function related cause and effect variables such as the influence of collector and depressant dosages on recovery and grades. Bench-scale flotation tests followed by pilot column testing provided the data used to develop a linear transfer function. The transfer function was derived using a spreadsheet. This model was applied to simulate how the flotation column could be made to respond to disturbances in feedgrade. The results were that xanthate, zinc sulfate, and sodium cyanide were found to be suitable controls for grade and recovery. Simulations showed the best sequence of manipulations of these reagents, and these sequences were useful for future operator training. The conclusion was that linear transfer functions were able to simulate lead and silver recovery, develop scenarios for operator training, and provide a foundation for future on-line control.

Newmont has been producing gold from the Carlin Trend for over 45 years. Naturally the focus, scale and complexity of the operations have changed considerably over this time. Newmont discovered and developed the Carlin Main ore body which is located about 32 km (20 miles) north of Carlin Nevada. The property was developed as a one mine one gold mill treatment plant operation which produced about 6,200 kg (200,000 Troy ounces) of dorè gold bars per year. The initial mine, mill and gold refining facilities were relatively small in comparison to today?s standards. The milling circuit used the Merrill-Crowe zinc precipitation process to recover dissolved gold and prepare a concentrated precious metal ?precipitate? to be melted into a dorè bar for sale.

The 2-mile Beach Interceptor Sewer Tunnel was constructed in 1954 to then-current mining and construction standards. Due to its lifespan and deteriorating condition it is now being stabilized and rehabilitated using conventional excavation and ground support. At its southern end, below the prestigious Three Arch Bay community, the original tunnel alignment passes under a historic landslide where the tunnel was sand-backfilled and capped by bulkheads in 1957 due to severe and caving ground conditions. Video footage of the existing 21- inch clay pipe showed that the pipe is severely damaged, which could potentially cause a catastrophic pipeline failure and sewage spill into the Pacific Ocean. This paper summarizes the thorough investigation and design process, tunnel realignment construction and monitoring, and the notable cooperation between all parties to overcome the project risks.

Marble is a preferred surfacing material in up-scale buildings. Its use increased in the 1870's with rising national wealth and declined in the 1950's when synthetic materials for these applications were developed. Natural marble is now limited to high-end domestic and commercial structures. Cultured marble is a paste of white marble dust and polyester resin cured in molds yielding fixtures of specific finished dimensions. Dyes incorporated at different stages in the mixing cycle mimic shades and veining of natural marble. This paper discusses the filler requirements for cultured marble production and reviews new techniques to cut and finish natural marble.

A series of difficult ground conditions causing high groundwater inflows and hazardous gas intrusion abruptly halted the construction of a 6.4-meter (21-foot) finished diameter and 1,890 meters (6,200 feet) long tunnel planned to serve as a 4-millioncubic meters (1-billion gallon) per day capacity river outfall for treated wastewater. Some 808-meters (2,650-feet) section of the constructed tunnel, TBM, and all other tunneling equipment were completely flooded with hydrogen sulfide laden artesian groundwater. The subsequent pumping and tunnel recovery efforts were unsuccessful and the tunnel was abandoned. In the end, the construction contract was terminated and options to redesign and reconstruct the project were re-evaluated to maximize the use of already constructed tunnel facilities such as the construction access and inter-mediate shafts and six outfall diffuser shafts in the river.

An AIME transaction by P.L. Allsman (1960), "Analysis of Explosive Action in Breaking Rock," contains many useful concepts applicable to blast design. Of special interest was the derivation of a heave blasting burden formula, which is important in establishing the maximum burden. Unfortunately, its derivation contains a fundamental error and then a compensating one. This formula was: [ ] The derivation used the impulse-momentum principle, with a 0.3 m thick (1 ft thick) radius of rock mass being acted on by an explosive impulse. However, the rock weight was not converted to mass by dividing by the gravitational constant. This mistake can be verified by checking the units in the formula, which resolve into m%-sec instead of meters. Adding the gravitational constant corrects this: [ ] If the minimum velocity is now taken as 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec), as was recommended, excessively large burdens result. Any appropriate rock velocity should be capable of throwing the rock mass a minimum distance so that the swell needed for breakage can occur. Unless the burden is extremely small and the bench height is very high, it is unlikely that a velocity of only 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec) will be sufficient. A review of the literature indicates that average rock velocities observed by camera studies typically range from 15 to 30 m/sec (50 to 100 ft per sec) (duPont deNemours and Co., 1977; Tansey, 1979). On this basis, a minimum rock velocity of about 15 m/sec (49 ft per sec) would be expected and not 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec). When a velocity of 15 m/sec (49 ft per sec) is inserted into the corrected formula, the results approximate those of the original formula with a velocity of 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec). Copper mine operations consistently generate a large quantity of tailings after their concentration processing. These tailings are either piled up or stored in a dam, where both alternatives of disposal lead to environmental impacts. The dam copper tailings have a huge potential for by-product production thus improving sustainability and profitability in industrial operations. This paper describes a study aiming at producing a magnetite pellet feed as a by-product from a dam chalcopyrite flotation tailings and generating free magnetite non-magnetic rougher tailings. The chemical assay and mineralogy analysis of dam copper flotation tailings indicate low Fe grade (6.34 wt%), high SiO2 grade (63.14 wt%), low magnetite (3.6 wt%), and high iron silicates content (22.72 wt%). The complex mineralogy of these tailings leads to the need of grinding the rougher magnetite pellet feed as fine as 80% of particles smaller than 20 μm ( P80) aiming at improving magnetite liberation. The proposed process route comprises a scalping screen, low field rougher, and cleaner magnetic separations using a drum magnetic separator (80 kA/m or 1000 Gauss), followed by silicates reverse cationic flotation as a recleaner step. With this process route, it was possible to produce a high-quality magnetite pellet feed reaching 68.00 wt% of Fe, 2.13 wt% of SiO2, 0.51 wt% of Al2O3, and 95.1 wt% of magnetite. The Blaine specific surface area was 2300 cm2/ g, being in the range recommended for pelletizing (1900 up to 3000 cm2/ g). The total mass, Fe, SiO2, Al2O3, and magnetite recoveries were 2.77%, 29.71%, 0.09%, 0.12%, and 73.17%, respectively. Most of the magnetite losses, around 20% of total magnetite fed, occurred in the oversize of the scalping screen. Additionally, it generated non-magnetic rougher tailings with less than 1.0 wt% of magnetite that could be used as by-products and reduced the amount of tailings disposal in a dam. This study contributes toward the sustainability of operation, minimizing tailings disposal.
