A mineral or metallurgical process uses various inputs, such as ores, energy and other raw materials, to make different products that fulfill societal needs. The processing of raw materials has changed in recent years due to the increased complexity of processing low-grade ores, intensifying competitiveness and greater constraints. For process improvement, various plant optimization and process modifications must be conducted under environmental, social, political and economic constraints. Processing research and education's success in meeting the process industry's future needs depends on an adequate balance between micro- and macro-engineering approaches. In its simplest form, macro-engineering is concerned with the "big picture," while micro-engineering requires looking at a subset of the process. So macro-engineering may be defined as an investigation of the larger or "whole" system to achieve the desired goals. And micro-engineering may be viewed as a quantitative investigation of a subset of the process, to determine cause-and-effect relationships within the subset. Two different approaches might be used in macro-engineering analysis. In one, the big picture may be viewed without a detailed knowledge of the subunits. With this approach, statistical tools are used to relate input and output parameters. Also, actual plant data or analog models might be used to obtain the desired information. The usefulness of such an approach increases with problem complexity. To attain the desired goals using the second, "model-based," approach, a detailed knowledge of the subunits is often useful and their interactions may be considered. In complex process analysis, the first of these approaches is more useful since less information is needed. However, it is also less exact and more likely to fail if there are significant changes in conditions and interactions. The second approach, on the other hand, is more exact, with greater predictive ability within the narrow subset being considered. Consequently, it is difficult and costly to conduct.

Acid rock drainage is one of the most complex issues facing regulators and mining companies for management and remediation of mining wastes. All mining waste units, including open pits, underground workings, tailings, waste rock and leached spent ore have the potential to generate acidic leachate based on the acid generation or neutralization potential of the material. This paper uses a case study of the Walker Mine in northern California to give an overview of the available control and mitigation methods. Wetland design is emphasized as a low-cost alternative treatment option for wastewater remediation. The Walker Mine is located on the eastern flank of the Sierra Nevada, 20 miles north of Portola in Plumas County, California. The Walker Mine was an active copper mine between 1915 and 1941. During active mining, tailings were discharged into an area 1 mile west of the site at the confluence of Dolly Creek and Grizzly Creek. In addition, there were two main sources of metal-rich, acid waters impacting Dolly Creek: discharge from the mine tunnel portal, and seepage and surface runoff from waters contacting mine waste downslope from the portal area. A mine portal seal was installed in 1987 which prevented the majority of mine water drainage from further contaminating the area. Minor drainage from the portal and seeps discharge into a holding pond which overflows into Dolly Creek when elevation exceeds 6,200 feet. A site characterization study was performed to evaluate the potential water quality threat to Dolly Creek from mine tunnel discharge and waste rock seeps. Based on the results of this study several remedial options were investigated, both on a design and cost basis, to determine which abatement alternatives could be realistically implemented. The remedial options considered include both in situ containment (landfill, waste pile) or removal (backfilling into underground workings and/or sinkholes) of solid wastes. Waste water remedial options include long-term, seasonal treatment of the portal mine water, or long-term, passive treatment of portal discharge and waste pile leachate.

The Cyanide Regeneration Process (CRP) was developed by Golconda Engineering and Mining Services and installed at Golconda's Beaconsfield Gold Tailings Retreatment Project situated in Tasmania, Australia. The Tailings Project is a 1000 ton per day carbon-in-pulp treatment plant, feed for which consists of tailings material which is dredged from the Tamar River. The pulp is screened to remove debris, then cycloned to form two products. Underflow pulp is stored in a 350 ton bin and cyclone overflow passes to a thickener. The coarse pulp material is fed to the grinding circuit then rejoins the thickened slimes in the cyanide leach circuit. Gold is extracted by carbon-in-pulp techniques. The plant is sited in rolling, hilly country approximately 200 meters from the Tamar River. The residue disposal area is quite small consisting of four dams, totalling 42 acres. The regional climate is cool and wet with little evaporation; therefore, we anticipated a net increase in contained liquor, and subsequent storage problems. Our plan was to remove cyanide from the liquor prior to returning the detoxified solution to the river system. Such treatment was not required until midway through the second year of the project. Initial testwork on sample material indicated that destruction of cyanide by chlorine was the simple solution. Subsequent follow-up on actual plant liquor indicated a huge chlorine requirement due, we believe, to the substantial degradation of vegetable matter plus organic content from the marine environment. The cost of cyanide destruction could not be justified.

The Janet Annenberg Hooker Hall of Geology, Gems and Minerals, located in the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, in Washington DC, opened in September, nine years after initial fundraising efforts were begun. The 1,858-m2 (20,000-sq ft), $16-million hall was mostly funded by private groups and individuals, including $1.7 million from 43 National Mining Associa¬tion (NMA) member companies. Companies that contributed more than $100,000 included Cyprus Amax, Phelps Dodge, Asarco, Homestake Mining, BHP, Caterpillar, Cleveland Cliffs, Exxon Coal and Minerals, Freeport-McMoRan, Newmont Mining and Peabody Holdings. The mining industry's contributions funded a walk-through Mine Gallery. It. features diora¬mas of four mines, as well as numerous specimens associated with the mines. The Mine Gal¬lery demonstrates to the public the importance of mining. The hall was named in honor of Hooker. She contributed $5 million in cash plus the Hooker Yellow Starburst Diamonds to the project. The hall is touted by the Smithsonian as the "most comprehensive earth science complex of its kind." It consists of seven galleries, each devoted to different aspects of gems, minerals and rocks. In addition to the Mine Gal¬lery, the hall contains a collection of gemstones and jewelry pieces, an extensive collection of minerals, a gallery devoted to plate tectonics and a gallery devoted to the moon, meteorites and the solar system. The new hall is a complete makeover of the old and outdated Geology Hall. It was built in the 1960s and finally closed to the public in 1995.

Gravity separation techniques were used in the early years to extract native metal nuggets and flakes from placer gold deposits. This was relatively easy for visible metal grains. As the size of the grain becomes smaller traditional gravity separation techniques become inadequate to recover native gold. Cyanidation was invented as a solution to the problem. According to it, gold and other precious metals are dissolved in water by sodium cyanide. The result was a drastic increase of world gold production but at the same time environmental issues were raised. In Greece gold mining has become equivalent with the absolute destruction of the environment and is under extinction. In the last years a new type of gravity equipment have been produced which create a gravitational field up to 200 G and can separate gold from gangue minerals at sizes below 50 µm. The strong gravitational field is created by centrifugal forces and the separation occurs in a fluidized bed, formed by water flow. Accumulations of finely disseminated native gold are found in the sedimentary sequence of the Flysch of the Ionian Zone. The main gold minerals are gold and electrum present as free metal flakes and micro nuggets in the size range between 5-250 µm. Test work, using the Falcon SB40 centrifugal concentrator, at the Department of Mineral Resources Engineering at the Technical University of Crete, has shown that this particular type of gold ore can be processed by gravitational methods that require no reagents and are environmentally safe.

On reflection of certain overall circumstances which have pervaded the gold mining industry, it appears useful to point out some specifics which the writer hopes will improve the potential for success in the application of hydraulic dredges to gold mining activity. I will, prior to entering into that discussion, comment briefly on rule of thumb for the application of the three types of equipment. The three are bucket line, bucket wheel and drag line dredges. From a standpoint of high volume movement over a short distance, between 50 and 300 feet, the drag line dredge is historically the most cost effective type of machine to be utilized if bulk excavation is the single driving consideration. It is typical for this sort of equipment to operate in the 10 to 30 cents per cubic yard range, however, cost of operation is not the sole consideration. Typically the drag line mixes and remixes the material which it excavates. In the event that gold recovery is the object of the exercise, a strong potential for loss of the valued mineral exists. Additionally, drag lines do a poor job of bottom cleaning, particularly if there is a ridged or creviced bottom which must be cleaned and in some cases partially removed to assure recovery of the highest percent of valuable ore. The bucket line dredge has, until recently, been considered an extremely cost effective device. Like Jerry, he's very shy and retiring, and doesn't have any strong opinions about maintenance. INTRODUCTION CRAIG AMMAR: The ultimate goal behind implementing a proactive equipment management process is to provide capacity assurance and ultimately increase an organization's ability to generate revenue while reducing operating costs. Targeting such lofty objectives has brought many an organization to its knees, utilizing new maintenance techniques, concepts, and technology aimed at making our lives better and more organized. The root cause of such frustration generally stems from a lack of understanding or support for the fundamentals of implementing a proactive equipment management process. There are just two types of maintenance programs, reactive and proactive. It's an established fact that you need a little of both to run an effective equipment management process, obviously more of one (proactive) than the other. Here are some telltale signs that your equipment management process is in trouble: -Maintenance is performed as a knee jerk reaction when equipment fails. -Repeated and frequent equipment failures occur, with no focus on eliminating the root cause. -Sketchy, inconsistent, unclear preventive maintenance is performed or there is no support for the preventive maintenance process. -No predictive maintenance technology process is in place, or little support for predictive maintenance exists. -Less than 50 percent of your work is generated by the maintenance group resulting from inspections.

The Minera Ojos Del Salado (?MINOSAL?) concentrator is located 20 kilometers southeast of Copiapo, Chile and processes copper ore provided by its Santos and Resguardo mines at a capacity of 4,200 tip (4,620 stpd). Phelps Dodge acquired the majority interest in MINOSAL in 1982. The principal incentive for this purchase was the exploration potential of the property. At that time, the concentrator plant was a small, antiquated installation with a capacity of 674 t/d (740 stpd). In 1982, the majority of the ore was produced from the Santos and Resguardo mines, but custom ores of copper, silver, and gold were also treated. The acquisition occurred at a crucial time in the copper business, since the price had fallen to nearly $0.50 per pound. In 1985, Phelps Dodge purchased the outstanding interest in MINOSAL and acquired 100% of the property. Today, after numerous improvements and two expansion projects, the concentrator is an interesting combination of old and new equipment. The regrind mills, for example, have been in service for about 50 years, while the ceramic concentrate filter represents the latest technology.

ASX's mining market has been successful because of the high reporting standards in the JORC Code and the high standards of professionalism and the intellectual capital that has been built up among the participants - the mining professionals, brokers, analysts, mining investors, professional advisers and the market operator. The balance of knowledge and understanding among these participants combined with the competition for capital, contributes to the standards for our mining market in a way that the market operator simply cannot replicate by market rules alone.

The application of the Cyprus Cyanisorb process was investigated using a pilot scale facility at the NERCO DeLamar Silver Mine (DSM) in Owyhee County, Idaho. The purpose of this process is to remove cyanide from the DeLamar mill tailings slurry prior to its introduction to the tailings impoundment. This will maintain the tailings impoundment solution in a detoxified condition and thus prevent migratory bird mortalities. The cyanide removed is to be collected and recycled to the mill. The process successfully recovered approximately 90 percent of the weak acid dissociable cyanide (WAD), reducing the effluent tailings cyanide concentration from about 300 ppm to less than 20 ppm. This was accomplished by stripping the slurry with air in a packed tower and recovering the volatilized HCN in a packed absorption tower. Data were obtained for the design of the full scale facility including the stripping and absorption towers, currently under construction at the DeLamar Mine site. Finally, test results indicated that the final pH of reneutralization can be optimized to provide for minimal gold and silver losses, while selectively precipitating unwanted metal impurities (Zinc, Selenium, Iron, and Copper) from solution

INTRODUCTION Soft ground tunnels may be above the ground water table or they may be subaqueous. The ground may be clays, silts, sands, gravels, glacial deposits, boulder tills, and any of these in any combination. Because of the relatively low strength and deformability of soils, difficulties often arise in soft ground tunnelling. These soil characteristics and resultant tunnelling difficulties, have had a direct influence on the development of "Lovat" Tunnel Boring Machines. We have been required to recognize and adapt to unusual ground conditions and to follow through with design, fabrication, and field maintenance to ensure dependable, trouble-free operation. The basic "Lovat" machine is a fully shielded, wheel-type with the cuttinghead driven by a monorace type bearing with gear drive incorporated in the bearing. Mechanical innovations have been added to the basic machine which complement the resources of manpower, equipment, and materials available to the contractor for a specific operation. The Department of Mining Engineering, University of Utah, has developed a thermodynamic-based mine ventilation simulator capable of predicting or analyzing the climatic conditions in hot underground environments. This compressible flow model, besides analyzing an operationally and legally-constrained network for mass and pressure balance, also takes into account various existing and anticipated sources of heat. Presently, three major sources of heat have been incorporated in the model. These include autocompression, wall-rock heat, and heat from equipment. A unique feature of this simulator which makes it distinctly different from its existing predecessors is the mathematical technique utilized to solve the network problem. Advantage has been taken of newer, more sophisticated mathematical and programming techniques to accomplish accelerated convergence and network solution generation. This paper describes in detail the development of the simulator including the mathematical relationships and the techniques used to predict the initial and final thermodynamic states of the mine air after its interaction with heat sources. The algorithm for solution to the network, computer model description, and the input data and program execution requirements are presented. A simple hypothetical network is used as a case study to illustrate the application of this simulator.

The introduction of liberalisation in Dutch mineral provision has created a lot of uncertainty on how and where to supply for the need of construction raw materials. Some possible effects of this policy shift are: 1. the extraction of materials from small pits with truck transport, 2. an increasing dependence on foreign suppliers, 3. the usage of marine dredged materials, 4. more input of secondary substitutes. The outcome of this policy and the resulting marketbehaviour have consequences for transport and infrastructure and hence for sustainability issues. Mineral provision, on the other hand, is also influenced by the availability of infrastructure. Insufficient transport capacity could hamper the development of mineral projects that render benefits to society. (Even) in a liberalising market for mineral provision, the central and local governments have an important role to play with regard to infrastructure and the effects of transport. Various trends point towards an increasing internationalisation in mineral provision. What will increasing trade and increasing influence of the market mean for transport infrastructure? How should increasing transport be judged with respect to sustainability? In the sustainability discussion these questions will have to be answered on a national as well as on a European scale.

The large size of the modern flotation cells and the high product flow rate from them has increased the importance of optimal flotation of all the particle sizes and of process control. By treating all the subprocesses of flotation separately a new family of flotation cells and a new concept of optimizing the flotation of coarse and fine particles in separate units but in the same row of flotation cells has been developed. The paper discusses the possibility to enhance coarse particle flotation by varying the froth residence time. A function has been developed between the residence time of the froth, air rate and the froth removal rate of coarse apatite particles. The response of apatite flotation to different control variables has been studied and modelled. The results show that the BPL assay response depends not only on the control variable used but also on the feed assay to the cell. There exists an feed assay dependent region within which the froth assay can be controlled by using the froth residence time as the control variable. These regions can be used to tune a rougher-multistep cleaner circuit to optimal.

Explosions and fires are without a doubt two of the most feared occurrences in modern underground mines. When they result in loss of life or substantial property damage, they usually gain world-wide media attention and have, on occasion, provided the impetus for legislative action. The very involvement of the Federal Government in mining was the result of a series of explosions which resulted in the loss of hundreds of lives. Fortunately, explosions of this magnitude are rare. Fires and explosions of lesser consequence are, however, more common and their severity may be more a matter of luck than anything else. The publicity which these events receive is usually restricted to the area immediately surrounding the mine and a1 though MSHA and sometimes the state prepare reports of their investigations, the general mining community is quite often aware of the circumstances surrounding these occurrences. This paper will discuss some of these "lesser" explosions which have occurred recently. These explosions have sometimes occurred in sealed or otherwise inaccessible areas of the mine involved, where conventional ignition sources such as electrical power were not present.

A pilot plant study was conducted to evaluate the performance of column flotation in the recovery of gold from the gold/tellurides bearing sulphide ore of the Kensington deposit (Echo Bay Mines and Coeur d'Alene Mines), and to compare the performance of column flotation to conventional "mechanically agitated" flotation, Tests were conducted in a 150 mm diameter, 60 liter glass column with ground flotation feed split from a concurrently operating conventional pilot plant, thus permitting direct comparison between the two processes. During the test program, the effects of wash water rate, gas holdup, froth depth, residence time and flow bias were examined in detail. The bulk metallurgical ore sample had an average "as tested" feed grade of about 5 git gold and 1 % sulphur, with the gold occurring primarily as inclusions of montbrayite (Au2Te3) in pyrite, with minor amounts of native gold. Conventional flotation using 60 minutes residence time across four roughing stages recovered about 97% of the gold into concentrates grading about 50 g/t Au. A single stage of column flotation roughing using 25 minutes residence time matched the conventional circuit recovery of97%, but produced grades of +150 git Au.

Porphyry-type deposits are characterized by mineralization in, as well as adjacent to, an igneous body, usually a porphyritic stock. One deposit style includes both mineral dissemination and mineralized veinlets, and both porphyry copper and porphyry molybdenum deposits are characterized by dissemination and veinlet control of ore minerals. Those gold deposits that occur in stocks, with gold occur- ring in veinlets and disseminations within the stock, clearly are can- didates for consideration as porphyry gold type. Porphyry copper and porphyry molybdenum deposits are also characterized by potassic, phyllic, argillic, orpropyllitic alteration or some combination of these alteration types. Where two or more alteration zones are present, these are arranged in a sequential outcrop pattern. Gold occurring in dissemination and in veinlets in as well as adjacent to stocks, and which also occur in typical pervasive porphyry alteration suits, constitute a clearly defined class of deposit that fits the definition of a porphyry gold type. Porphyry copper deposits may carry appreciable gold. Porphyry copper-gold deposits are known from all porphyry copper provinces. This chapter is intended to cover porphyry gold occurrences that may have little or no copper or molybdenum as economic concentrations.

Western Mining Corporation Limited owns and operates the St Ives Gold Plant located near Kambalda, approximately 90 kilometres south of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia. Production commenced in March 1988 at a design capacity of approxi­mately two million tonnes per year. The plant was quickly expanded as a result of new ore discoveries in the district and has been processing ore since 1993 at the rate of three million tonnes per year. The plant has recovered over 50 tonnes of gold since the operation began, The plant was able to maintain acceptable recoveries throughout the plant expansion phases. Further gains in recovery were possible since there was still free gold in the tailings after approximately 24 hours of leaching. Testwork carried out on prospective orebodies showed that some contained considerable quantities of free visible gold, while others were seen to be semi­refractory using a conventional grind - leach circuit. Alternative treatment techniques were considered because a substantial amount of revenue was lost with the treatment of these ore bodies using conventional milling techniquies. The basis for all the investigations was to maximise the gold recovery from each orebody while minimising the effective cost per ounce of gold produced,

A novel solvent-extraction route for the production of high­purity gold has been successfully demonstrated on a pilot-plant scale, and the first full-scale production plant is being commissioned. This plant, at Harmony Gold Mine in South Africa, is designed to refine 24 tons of gold per annum when operated for one shift per day. The commercial implementation of this process represents not only a significant advance in gold­refining technology, but may also be instrumental in initiating important changes in the legislation regulating the marketing of gold in South Africa. The Minataur™ Process (Mintek Alternative Technology for Au Refining) is able to produce gold of either 99.99% or 99.999% purity from intermediate process products having a wide range of gold contents. The process comprises oxidative leaching of the feed material, followed by selective solvent extraction of the gold from the leach liquor to reject impurities, and then precipitation of high-purity gold powder. This paper introduces the process, presents selected results of pilot-plant trials in which high-purity gold was produced from two significantly different feed materials, and illustrates some of the applicable cost benefits.
