INTRODUCTION The concern of occupational exposure to diesel exhaust pollutants is an important workplace issue for the mining industry. During the last three decades of diesel operations at Inco, a significant amount of research and improvement has been made in the area of work environment, and effective diesel operation. This paper will review the experience gained by Inco's Ontario Division from the implementation and the use of modern engines, improved fuel quality, and the exhaust control technology, coupled with adherence to proper maintenance and ventilation design and practices. Past monitoring practices and the current occupational monitoring program at lnco are outlined. A major new research initiative involving multi-stake holders in diesel performance is described. MINING IN THE SUDBURY AREA The discovery of nickel-copper ore in the Sudbury area dates back to the year 1856. The existence of this orebody was noticed when a strong compass deflection was observed by a provincial surveyor. This discovery, even though documented in official re- ports, failed to arouse any public attention at that time. In 1884, a rock-cut was blasted through a small hill near the village of Sudbury to permit laying track for the Canadian Pacific Railway (Boldt 1967). The rock-cut uncovered a body of massive sulfides with a copper content of over nine percent. The mineralization is concentrated along the outer margin of the Sudbury Basin, an oval-shaped structure having a dimension of 55 x 95 kilometres. The ore extends down-dip to to at least 3000 metres below the surface. The mining methods at lnco can be divided into two categories: "filled-stope" and 'bulk" mining. This division, in the broad sense, may also reflect the environmental conditions of the mine. In the past, the selection of a mining method was based on the size, shape, grade and the strength of the ore and its surroundings. The recent development of improved technology and mining equipment permitted wider application of low cost bulk mining methods. UNDERGROUND DIESEL EQUIPMENT The first diesel-powered machine, a 145-horsepower scooptram, was put into operation in March 1966, in a cut-and-fill stoping complex at Frood Mine. The number of diesel machines underground in the Inco, Ontario Division, mines was increased to 360 units by 1971,550 in 1977 (Rutherford 1978), and over 830 diesel-powered units in 1995. The following list indicates current mobile diesel equipment. LHD 194 Loaders 81 Trucks 28 Jumbo Drills 78 Personnel Carrier 101 Service Equipment 155 Locomotives 50 Bolters 30 Scissor Lift 113 About 20 percent of the LHD and truck units are equipped with electronic fuel controlled engines. COMPOSITION OF DIESEL EXHAUST Diesel exhaust contains hundreds of pollutants (Watts 19921, including components of unburned fuel and lubricating oil and products of incomplete combustion of the fuel and oil. These pollutants are emitted either as gases or as particles. Gaseous pollutants include carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur ox- ides, as well as a variety of organic compounds, such as hydro- carbons, aldehydes, and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons. The particle phase, also known as diesel particulate matter (DPM), is the filterable portion of diesel exhaust. Figure 1 depicts the trimodal particle size distribution that arises from different mechanisms of aerosol generation (Cantrell and Rubow 1992). Primary combustion aerosols, including diesel exhaust aerosol, are formed as very small particles (in the 0.001 to 0.08 micrometre range), but physical mechanisms such as condensation and coagulation quickly transfer the aerosol mass from the nuclei mode to the accumulation mode. These processes result in a mass median diameter of approximately 0.2 micrometres for diesel particulate matter, and 90% of the particles are less than 1.0 micrometre in size. These particles have a high surface area, permitting the adsorption of different substances produced during combustion. Mechanically generated aerosols, on the other hand, typically contain particles greater than 1 micrometre in diameter. The particle phases of diesel exhaust contain three components (Bagley, et al, 1996) shown by Figure 2, namely: a carbon- aceous fraction composed mainly of solid-carbon particles, a sulfate fraction containing small hydrated sulfate particles, and a soluble fraction that contains compounds that are soluble in organic solvents and are adsorbed or condensed onto carbon core particles. These compounds consist primarily of higher molecular weight hydrocarbons and PAH's and may contribute 15% to 45% of the weight of the total particulate matter (Schuetzle, 1983). The control of these pollutants is necessary to ensure a healthy work environment. "The European aluminium industry, through its member organisation the European Aluminium Association (EAA), initiated a program on sustainable development for the aluminium industry in 2001. The first step involved the development of a set of sustainable development (SD) indicators for the industry, taking into account of the different interests involved and also the different existing conventions. The indicator set was developed during 2001 and 2002 with the assistance of recognised partners, including Wuppertal Institute from Germany and Versailles University from France. As well, both internal and external stakeholder groups were involved in order to validate the indicators. This has resulted in a set of thirty-four indicators used in the first survey exercise. In the survey the EAA, together with the national aluminium associations, attempted to cover all European plants producing alumina, primary aluminium, rolling ingots, extrusion ingots, foil and recycled aluminium -covering approximately 800 plants. The survey used two points in time, 1997 and 2002, in order to start developing a trend for the individual indicators and to measure progress over time. The industry response to the survey was very positive, with a total industry coverage based on tonnage reported of over 80% for 2002 data and 70% for 1997 data. The results also show a solid progress for most indicators and particularly for social indicators such as training performance, community involvement and employees health programmes. The EAA is committed to conducting this as a regular exercise and is engaged in a number of stakeholder workshops in order to present the survey results, to review the indicators used and to also consider adjustments of these based on feedback from stakeholders and experiences from the first data collection."

Basing on a brief assessment of the conventional theory of ventilating air distribution, its methods of calculation and practical application, this paper makes an approach to the controllability of different aircourses of a ventilation network and further points out that it is possible for the positions of control to extent into the natural distribution subnetwork of the ventilation network, which was been long considered as a restricted zone. This important discovery makes the regulation of the ventilation system more flexible and diversified, thus attaining quantitative distribution of ventilating air as well as a cost benefit. Because it has been impossible to solve the problem mentioned above by conventional theory and its relevant methods of calculation, the author, based on applying graph theory on the structure, characteristics, and requirements of controllability of the ventilation network, presents a new controllable subgraph concept and the means for determining the rational quantity for control devices of the ventilation network. The solution of all the control alternatives and methods of obtaining all the parameters for the solution of various alternatives have been derived. The economic benefit and the optional positions of the control devices have also been approached. Specific calculation examples are a1 so included in this paper. Along with the conventional theory and its methods, it can be seen that the new theory presented makes a great change in the control aspects of the ventilation network, with the number of possible alternatives increasing in an astonishing manner. Among the alternatives, some may be safer, more economical or technologically superior than those obtained from conventional theory. Thus, the new theory may provide an immense improvement in the choice of a ventilation system.

In the October 1988 issue of MINING ENGINEERING, J.G. Wargo's paper discusses the problem of measuring and analyzing permeability, porosity, and fracturing in its relation to in situ leaching of disseminated gold deposits. This paper made me suspect that a good deal of information and analysis may have been done on this in reverse in the petroleum industry. Some years ago, I was involved with the US Geological Survey in a project studying the Devonian shale of the eastern United States. The Devonian shale contains gas deposits that have the characteristic of slowly seeping gas over a very long time period. To understand the rate of seepage, considerable study and analysis was done on the interrelationship of poros¬ity, permeability, and fracturing. The purpose was to find out how and why the gas could escape in the varying rates found in wells throughout the formation. It strikes me that this is the mirror image of the problem faced in attempting to understand how a cyanide solution will travel into a deposit. To possibly invent our own personal wheel a little faster, I would suggest a look at the work done on the Devonian shale. Some of it is contained in "Estimates of Unconventional Natural-Gas Resources of the Devonian Shale," US Geologi¬cal Survey Open-file Report 82-474, 1982, and "Additional Data for the Estimates of Unconventional Natural-Gas Re¬sources of the Devonian Shale," Open-file Report 83-676, 1983. It is entirely possible that some of this previous work could shorten the time required to make in situ leaching of dissemi¬nated gold deposits a profitable technique.

Electronic ore sorting is a coarse particle beneliciating process which performs a function which in the past was primarily achieved through the use of hand picking belts. Photometric ore sorting is capable of separating waste from mineral bearing rock having a distinct difference in surface light reflectance levels. This type of ore sorter can be applied to gold and silver ores which are contained in quartz veining. Photometric ore sorting has been used at gold mines in South Africa as well as the Black Pinc silver mine in Montana. A new ore sorter has recently been developed with precious metal ores in mind. This ore sorter is capable of sorting ores on both photometric and conductivity sensing parameters. The first production machine has been installed at a gold mine near Beardmore, Ontario and currently is being used to process low grade waste dumps.

The Calgary Coal Research Laboratory of CANMET and the National Research Council in Ottawa are developing a series of computer models aimed at improving productivity and operational practices of the Canadian surface coal mining industry. One of the top priorities in this respect is a comprehensive computer model of truck/shovel system. A total of twelve mining companies supplied data for validation purposes. The supplied data, operating practices and variances of individual mining systems from the general version of the computer models are discussed in the paper. A short overview of the truck/ shovel model and a plan for future activities involving the application of the computer models for simulation of mining practices are also described. The presented paper summarizes the experience gained during the collection of data for the development and validation of the model.

The Mixshield is a tunnelling machine for water bearing soft soils. Developed on the basis of the Hydroshield, it extents the application of this machine to cohesive soils. The design of the drum-type machine allows three different applications 1. As shield with liquid supported face and hydraulical mucking 2. As Compressed-Air-Shield 3. As Earth pressure balanced shield. The Mixshield is employed on three big contracts 1. a 6.3 km ring tunnel in Hamburg, outer diameter 5.95 m, with a new developed segmented concrete lining 2. a 1.9 km pipe-jack job near Cologne, o.d. 3.6 m 3. Metro Lot 3 in Lille/France, o.d. 7.7 m, 3.2 km long with segmented concrete lining and a most sophisticated separation-plant The site experiences will be reported.

EMR's recently commissioned Pilot Plant in Fredericton, N.B. Canada, the latest and largest in the company's sequence of prototype and demonstration systems, is being used as a process development facility for mining clients worldwide. Fitted with two microwave reactors and 75 kW generators, this plant is designed as a two-stage continuous processor with a throughput in the 5-10 tpd range depending upon the material feedstream. This facility has been used principally to calcine pyrite and arsenopyrite gold concentrates although it can readily accommo­date carbonaceous materials as well as a wide range of other ore types. Engineering details of the plant and the results of the first nine months of operation are presented. The plant has proven very successful as an advanced process development facility as well as a basic production unit module.

The mine characteristic curve represents the relation between the airflow in a system and the pressure drop across the system. In a single fan system, this relation can be easily drawn by assuming different values of the airflow and calculating the corresponding pressure drop according to Atkinson’s law. In a multiple-fan system this cannot be done for each fan simultaneously. However, an alternative mathematical method for plotting subsystem characteristic curves on subsystem quantity coordinates is outlined here that achieves this objective. The Hardy Cross algorithm has been combined with a switching-parameters technique and has been used to trace subsystem characteristic curves. An example using four fans in a complex network is presented here. This example illustrates the nature of the problem and the difficulty of detecting unstable conditions in this type of network.

The Blue Mountain Tunnel is a part of the Sultan River Hydroelectric Project. The Sultan Project is in the Cascade Mountain Range, approximately 56 km (35 mi) northeast of Seattle, Washington. The geology is structurally complex, consisting of graywacke and argillite, with lesser amounts of metaigneous rocks. The tunnel, excavated with a tunnel boring machine (TBM), is 4.32 m (14 it) in diameter and 6.3 km (3.9 mi) long. The average 24 hour advance was 41 m (134 it) with a maximum of 71 m (234 it). The tunnel is essentially unlined except for 383 m (1,257 it) in a low cover area and in the rocktrap. Inspection of the tunnel after one year of operation showed it to be in good condition with only a minor amount of rock debris in the rocktrap.

In March of 1994, Dynatec Mining Limited entered into a contract with PCL Civil Constructors to carry out the underground excavations for the Algonquin Power Corporation’s15 Megawatt Nagagami hydro-electric power station located near Hearst, Ontario, Canada. Dynatec completed the work for this project in early October 1995. Dynatec Mining Limited’s work included the excavation of a 175 meter long penstock driven at a grade of -25% to a 4000 m3 powerhouse located 50 meters below the intake elevation. A 1200 meter long tailrace was driven from the Nagagami River to connect with the powerhouse. Two 50 meter raises were driven from the powerhouse to surface to pro-vide access for equipment and personnel. The excavation of the tailrace tunnel(5.8m x 5.9m) was completed using Dynatec’s Long Round Jumbo Technology.

The Rawas Gold Project in Indonesia has a high silver ore with a ratio of approximately 25:1 Ag/Au. Four process flow­sheets were considered during the development phase, ie. full Merrill Crowe, CIP, CIP with zinc cementation of eluate and a hybrid Merrill Crowe - CIP circuit. The process plant was constructed using a CIP circuit with zinc cementation of eluate. Unusual aspects of the design include an elution circuit designed to strip three batches of car­bon per day and an elution column designed to operate with either upward or downward solution flow. Significant improvements implemented since starting up the plant include the use of local materials and labour for relining the mill, a change from lime to caustic soda for pH modification and the elimination of caustic soda dosing to the elution pre-soak step.

Minera Yanacocha operates a complex heap leach gold facility in the Northern Andes of Peru. Four leach pads and thirteen solution storage process ponds form an extremely complex system. Distinctly different wet season and dry season rainfall accumulations present unique challenges to the process water balance. Minera Yanacocha operates four excess water treatment facilities which discharge water to the environment at specific quality standards in order to maintain a balanced system. Numerous government agencies and non-government organizations are involved with the permitting, monitoring and control of the discharged water. Minera Yanacocha maintains a relationship with 65 villages and communities, with a population of approximately 29,000 people and the city of Cajamarca with approximately 100,000 residents. This paper provides a high level review of the system complexity, the water balance, the excess water treatment facilities and social aspects of solution management.

The gold processing plant location in the Chalkidiki coastal area has been studied as a land use conflict case study in the context of a EU research program. The sustainability assessment of the plant establishment is made on the basis of a group of sustainability principles and criteria adopted in the framework of the SPECTRA project. Since the gold processing project has not been implemented yet its sustainability assessment is made on the documents submitted by TVX Gold during the procedure for the siting consent and the granting of environmental conditions. The assessment, appearing on a table, reveals an important effort to achieve a high degree of protection during the operation and after completion of the activity. The specific nature of the development and the knowledge of the local opposition in favour of tourism development have obviously influenced the priorities set.

Currently, a 4.3 km long drift is being developed on the 3440 level in the Lower Kalamazoo project at the San Manuel Mine, Magma Copper Company, AZ. The drift, located at 1050 m below surface, is being constructed using a 4.6 m diameter tunnel boring machine (TBM). The drift is ventilated by a forcing type auxiliary ventilation system. At the face, to mitigate the impact on the work environment of the TBM, the system is equipped with dust extraction and refrigeration systems. Recently, to evaluate the ventilation conditions in the drift, a continuous monitoring system has been installed. The system can be used to measure the air velocity, barometric pressure, relative humidity and air and rock temperatures. This study describes the capabilities and limitations of this system, and presents a summary of the results.

Guided seismic wave propagation was studied in the Lower Freeport (6A) coal seam in the Oak Park No. 7 mine near Cadiz, OH. Three component geophones were implanted in the coal at distances ranging from 72 m to 183 m from the seismic source. Both Love- and Rayleigh-type modes were observed but the Love-type mode produced the best data. Detailed analysis was performed on the best Love data and a Dziewonski map of group velocity vs. frequency was constructed. This map was in excellent agreement with a theoretical dispersion curve calculated for a model of the coal seam. The Love wave group velocity was found to have a minimum value of 510 m/sec at 275 Hz. Only the fundamental mode contributed significantly to the observed signal and it was observed up to the maximum distance available.

My qualification to speak on the globalization of the the mining industry comes from having worked in the industry in Europe, North and South America, Africa and Australasia in positions ranging from exploration geologist to chief executive. For about a third of my career I have lived and worked in the Southern Hemisphere. And for much of the rest of my career I have been involved in or responsible for activities in the Southern Hemisphere. This has given me the opportunity to experience globalization from the sharp end, as it were. This means speaking English with an Australian accent, Spanish with a Chilean accent, French with a West African accent and Dutch with an English accent. My topic is globalization, especially of the mining industry from a Southern Hemisphere perspective and specifically the experience and history of Gencor in that context. First, I will say a little about what globalization means to the southern part of the world: How and why the South differs from the North and how the challenge of globalization affects a south-based company differently than a northern one. I will also detail how Gencor has made significant progress in globalizing through the acquisition of mining assets from Shell. As Fig. 1 shows, I have divided up the world into northern and southern components, rather than hemispheres. The southern world comprises mainly countries that have emerged from the status of economic - if not political - colonies of nations such as England, Spain, Portugal, France, the Netherlands and, surprisingly, Italy and Germany. I have not considered the Indochinese and Arabian peninsulas in my southern world. The emergence of the. former is still in its early stages while the latter is clearly a part of the northern economic system. Large parts of Africa and South America are geometrically in the Northern Hemisphere but economically in the southern world. The reverse is the case for the IndoPersian peninsula. With the distinguished exception of Australia and South Africa, most of these countries nationalized their mining industries and mineral patrimony after attaining political independence. A major element of the globalization of the mining industry is related to the privatization of the mining industry in these countries and to the opening up of their min¬eral patrimony to non-national exploitation. The Southern Hemisphere is the watery part of the world. It is almost three quarters ocean as against a slight preponderance of land in the north. Economically, ocean areas have only a fraction of the productivity of land, except in a few oil-rich areas like the Gulf of Mexico and the North Sea. The consequence is that even on an economically level playing field we would expect the south to generate only about one third of the world's economic product.

Discussion by A. Unal Barbaro et al. (1990) implemented a tedious study aimed at delineating the short-scale spatial variability of sulfur in a coal seam. It is not possible, however, to extend their conclusions to any other coal seam or use their in any other fashion, because the background geology was not presented. Nor were the conclusions accompanied by geological interpretations in the paper. In addition, an unfortunate printing error occurred where the total sulfur (determined by High Temperature Combustion) variogram in Fig.3 was duplicated in Fig. 2 instead of the seam height variogram. A more serious error, however, has been committed in the definition of the variable, seam height. What is defined as seam height by Barbaro et al. (1990) is, in essence, mining height, and is not a regionalized variable that should be studied by geostatistical methods directly. Despite the fact that the variable, seam height, is not defined in the paper explicitly, the following quotation discloses the fallacy: "All roof rock that exceeded 1.8 m (6 ft) from the floor was not taken because the longwall was operated to not mine more than 1.8 in (6 ft) unless the coal seam height exceeded 1.8 m (6 ft)." From this definition, the seam height, and therefore the sampling height, is equal to the actual coal thickness, if the coal thickness is greater than 1.8 m (6 ft). Otherwise, it is equal to the sum of the coal thickness plus the thickness of the roof rock that complements the thickness to 1.8 m (6 ft). In the latter case, the seam height is constant and equal to 1.8 m (6 ft). It is possible to conduct a variogram study on a pool of samples that are realizations of two different variables. But the conclusions derived would not belong to any one of the two variables uniquely and, therefore, do not possess any significance. Geostatistical analysis is irrelevant for the sum of multiple regionalized variables formed by arbitrary selections. In a two-seam setting, for example, the mining height, as defined by the thickness of one seam at one location and the thickness of both seams at another location (due to quality and/or minimum thickness considerations perhaps), should not be used in the calculation of one common variogram. The two seams should be modeled separately. They can then be combined according to the specific purposes of the study. On the other hand, if a constant is added to a regionalized variable (to incorporate dilution perhaps), the variogram of the new variable will not change. Barbaro et al. (1990), surprisingly, does not give any geological interpretation of their results despite the fact that most of them can be explained by the origins of sulfur in a coal seam. The presentation of the results of a geostatistical study with no reference to the geology of the deposit is uninformative. It may also be misleading for the potential users of geostatistics, It is not unusual to find nuggets of pyrite in coal seams. In such cases, pyritic sulfur will probably display a spatial structure for only a very small distance that will appear in the experimental variogram as no spatial correlation. This very well known phenomenon is called the pure nugget effect in geostatistics (Journel and Huijbregts, 1978) and perhaps can explain the lack of correlation found for pyritic sulfur content. The lack of correlation found for the total sulfur content may also be explained in the same way because the total sulfur content is dominated by the pyritic sulfur content in this case study. One should notice, however, that the situation may completely be reversed after cleaning the coal. Not all of the inorganic sulfur should be expected to be in the form of pyrite nuggets in a coal seam. It may also be disseminated in the coal seam and it is expected that it follows a certain spatial structure. However, an existing spatial structure may be masked by including a part of the roof rock, rich in sulfides, into the seam thickness in an arbitrary fashion because areas having a sandstone roof sometimes are known to show a higher sulfur content due to the downward percolation of solutions rich in iron sulfides (Clark, 1979). Plants use sulfur in their growth processes. Much of this sulfur is bound organically during peat accumulation and coal formation (Cecil et al., 1978.) This suggests a spatial structure of some sort for the organic sulfur. However, it is not possible to test this hypothesis because the results obtained by the authors for the organic sulfur content are not given in this paper. For this reason, the conclusion that simple average of the nearby samples would provide the best unbiased estimates is questionable for organic sulfur and is not based on any substantial supporting evidence. It is suspected that no spatial structure was detected and this was due to high sampling and laboratory analysis errors. Before concluding that sulfur variability in the seam at the location of study was random, a more detailed study for the disseminated non-pyritic sulfur should have been conducted, not for the sake of scientific curiosity only, but also due to its utmost importance with regard to coal cleaning and emission control. Pyritic sulfur can be cleaned to a considerable extent, whereas organic sulfur can not, making the emission control strategies highly dependent on the spatial distribution of the organic sulfur (Knudsen, 1981). In the light of these facts, one wonders why Barbaro et al. (1990) did not present the results of their study for the sulfate and organic sulfur content. The Kitsault molybdenum deposit lies along the east margin of thecoast Batholith Complex near the head of the fiord of Alice Arm. It is 800 km (497 miles) northwest of Vancouver, British Columbia. The deposit is located on Lime Creek 8 km (5 miles) from the coast on a wide dissected upland valley at an elevation of 600 m (1969 ft). It is an area of coastal rain forest with high annual precipitation and extremely high winter snowfall. Although the area is of high relief, outcrops are largely restricted to ridges and canyons. Most of the area is covered by the coastal vegetation or wet swampy upland areas. The south edge of the molybdenum deposit was exposed in a sharp canyon; however, outcrops over the remainder of the deposit were largely restricted to a few small exposures of resistant hornfels. The mineralization is related to an elliptical porphyry stock of 52.3 m.y. age which intrudes argillites and microgreywackes of the Late Jurassic Bowser Group. A circular zone of alteration, with a diameter of about 700 m (2297 ft), occurs in the north end of the stock and the molybdenite mineralization is concentrated in the outer parts of this zone of alteration. Thus, the northern part of the mineralization occurs partly in the hornfels and partly in the stock, whereas the southern side of the ring of mineralization cuts across the middle of the stock. Zoning within this system includes a central circular area of almost complete replacement of quartz plus K- feldspar and this grades sharply outward into a phyllic zone. Clay alteration is largely localized along late faults. The ring of molybdenite mineralization is partly overlapped and partly surrounded by a zone of pyrite mineralization. Some chalcopyrite is coextensive with the pyrite zone. Late polymetallic veins fill two conjugate fracture sets. These quartz veins contain galena, pyrite, some chalcopyrite, and a number of lead-bismuth sulfosalts.
