The vast majority of tailings in the Western Australian Goldfields are deposited in purpose-built storage facilities. At mine-sites with open-pit mining operations there is also the requirement to mine and stack large volumes of waste rock, usually into surface waste dumps. As these dumps have typically 30% of their gross volume present as voids, there is the potential to use this void space for the storage of tailings. The concept of co-disposal is to store the tailings material in the void space of the waste dumps, eliminating the need for a separate tailings storage facility. Dominion Mining Limited have been investigating the possibility of using co-disposal as a means of tailings storage. Laboratory testwork has been used to understand some of the issues associated with the concept, and assist in the design of an on-site demonstration of the concept. Co-disposal offers a number of potential advantages, and despite a number of practical hurdles to overcome, considerable economic and environmental benefits could be realised if this concept can be demonstrated on a commercial scale. The major advantage of such a system is to remove the need to build, operate and rehabilitate a separate tailings storage facility. Rehabilitation can be incremental throughout the mine life as the co-disposal site will be virtually indistinguishable from a current waste dump in both size and form. Other potential advantages include more stable waste dumps, less land area disturbed on the project site, and better water recovery from the tailings.

THE PLANNED MAINTENANCE PROGRAM All concentrators should start with a planned maintenance program from day one. Every- body thinks they have a program in place before start-up, but in reality, most have only a fraction of what is needed to avoid the "Post Start-up Disaster" (PSD) - two years for start-up is not that uncommon. An effective program has all of the following: (1) Good people. (2) Area Maintenance. (3) Good PM Checklists. (4) Daily Work Schedules. (5) Written Work Orders. (6) Equipment Histories. (7) Backlog Control. The installation of a workable program takes hard work, talent, and commitment. You have to know what you are doing (hard work will not replace talent). Good People Good people are available in any location if you make the effort. Always check references carefully (both superiors, peers and subordinates). Was the last concentrator they worked at successful? Was it clean? Find out! Success or failure follows people around. I know people who are experts on PSD because they have lived through it three or four times. You need some college trained people with hands-on experience. There are no secrets, you have to make the effort. If you make a mistake in hiring (and you probably will), make the tough decision necessary to rectify it quickly. Area Maintenance Area maintenance refers to organization of supervision such that one person is uniquely accountable for every inch of ground and piece of equipment. How representative are partial-panel screen tests of the in situ response of screen to roof and rib deterioration and displacements? Can a more representative procedure that tests up to two full screen panels improve the utilization and effectiveness of screen as a roof and rib support? This paper details a new full-panel screen test procedure and the initial results. The full-panel test frame was designed to test a 2.4 by 3.6-meter screened area with bolt spacing as small as 0.3-meter increments. The initial design included up to 6 screen pull points, but additional locations can be added to produce a more uniform loading. The test frame was developed to capitalize on the capabilities of the Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) at the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The initial tests included a baseline test of a partial panel (1.22 by 1.22-m screen section) using the original 1.52 by 1.52-meter test frame, a 1.22 by 1.22-meter screen section test in the new full-panel test frame, and two tests of 2.4 by 3.6-meter screened area in the full-panel test frame. The 1.22 by 1.22-meter screen section tests in the full-panel test frame produced a peak load 6% higher and a yield load 30% lower than the partial-panel (original) test frame. The multiple pull points of the full-panel frame produced variable yield, peak, and intermediate loads, but on average were lower than the single pull-point tests. INTRODUCTION Roof and rib surface support has become a major component of the stability and safety of underground coal openings in the past 15 years. The use of screen, either metal or synthetic, has proven to decrease the injuries of underground coal miners. By 2005, there were 466 injuries in the United States caused by roof skin failures, with numerous mines not employing roof screen. In contrast, in 2015 there were 175 injuries caused by roof skin failures, with at least some of the reduction due to the increased use of roof screen. A continued effort to increase the utilization of screen in areas of underground coal mines where workers are traveling and working can reduce these injuries even further. To aid in this effort, the testing of various screen types under various loading and attachment conditions is required. Past testing efforts have primarily consisted of partial-panel testing in a laboratory setting. Laboratory testing of roof screen, both metal and composite, has been conducted in several ways by researchers, manufacturers, and other entities. The primary focus on the testing has been evaluating weld integrity of 1.22 by 1.22-meter screen section tests of various screen types utilized in mining (Dolinar, 2006; Dolinar, 2009; Tannant, 2001). There have also been several efforts at numerical simulation of the screen and screen/rock interactions (Murali et al., 2006; Shan et al., 2014). A few full-panel tests were performed with one pull or loading point in the center of the screen panel (Shan et al., 2014). As most previous efforts have mentioned, the only true way to evaluate the capabilities of screen is to conduct full-panel testing. Single wire strand, weld, and partial-panel (1.22 x 1.22-m) tests as well as numerical modeling only provide insight into the actual response of full-panel screen. A new test frame and procedure have been developed at PMRD to conduct various loading, anchoring, and material testing.

By blending phosphogypsum with thickened mill clays, Texasgulf has successfully resolved the problems of gypsum disposal and reclamation of mined-over areas. In the process, clays are thickened to 10% solids through high rate thickeners, mixed with gypsum from a drained gypsum pile (75%) and a direct discharge from belt filters (25%), then pumped to mined-over areas. The blending of clays and the low pH gypsum yield a mixture with a pH of about 7. Dewatering is rapid to 40-45% solids within 3 months. The material spreads with very shallow slopes and within a year desiccation by high flotation ditching equipment is possible. The artificial soil is classified as a silty loam in texture, lacking only in nitrogenous nutrients. The soil material has proven to support many field crops including small grain, corn, alfalfa, and grasses. Sycamore, green ash, sweetgum and bald cypress have done well in 3 years of growth. The nitrogen source for tree growth will be made up through an alfalfa cover.

Inflation has received much attention due to its effect on capital budgeting, associated cost overruns, and declining real profits. This study focuses on the effects of inflation on the evaluation of a mining investment and the estimation of a mining project's revenues. The study indicates that the best method for estimating future returns is the fore- cast dollar scheme. In this scheme, the metal price was held constant, and the operating costs were "inflated" along a historical regression line. The conclusion was reached by comparing the "actual" performance of a 3000 tpd (tonnes per day) lead mine model with 'its estimated performance during four time periods (1950-1960, 1955-1965, 1960-1970, 1965-1975). The individual data files for each time period and estimating method (6 files by 4 time periods) were pro- cessed by a suite of cash flow computational and investment analysis sub- routines. The analysis presumed that the mine was part of a large corporation which could utilize the expensed, development and exploration costs and any investment tax credits, in the year that they were incurred.

A procedure is presented for ranking hazardous waste sites for remedial decisions, and an example with application to mining waste sites is discussed. Typical contaminant concentrations are calculated from field data. Exposure indices that compare these measured concentrations with allowable limits are then computed. The limits are selected to protect both the health of humans (for both carcinogen and noncarcinogen effects) and the health of key organisms in the ecological food web. The additive exposure index for a site, defined as the sum of all contaminant-specific exposure indices, is then used in ranking the sites and assigning each a priority for remedial action. One key source of uncertainty in the process is the estimation of a typical site concentration from data that include values reported as "below certified reporting limit" (BCRL). This uncertainty is compounded in the additive exposure index and therefore may have a substantial effect on the assignment of remediation priority. A general approach is presented for incorporating consideration of BCRL data into uncertainty evaluation when assigning remediation priority designators to hazardous waste sites.

In 1969 Holosonics designed and developed a portable system for conducting acoustical surveys in metal mines, with lead-silver veins as the principal targets. Recently this system has been proven useful in describing rock structures for advance geologic information in civil engineering application and underground construction applications. This paper discusses a case history of acoustical surveying from a series of pilot drill holes in an advancing tunnel. In acoustical surveying a pulsed acoustic signal is used to generate reflected signals from the rock formation. Arrival time, amplitude and phase of the returned signals can be determined. These data became the basis for a signal correlation program designed to relate the signals to their respected pseudo-planar reflecting interfaces. An application of acoustical surveying has recently been conducted in a portion of the excavation for the Washington Metro Area Transit Subway. The data results and conclusions of the program are discussed in the paper. Acoustical surveying was successful in predicting the occurrence of major jointing and foliation plane shearing ahead of the tunnel advancement.

A joint research effort by Newmont Gold and Du Pont, working with Kurtis Mooney, of Tri-Combined Resources has developed a new ore-sample bag made of "Tyvek," a spunbonded olefin. "The goal was to find a bag with the best trade-off between efficient draining of moisture, minimal fines loss and compatibility with the conveyor drying process we were developing for our new assay lab," Charles Bucknam, analytical development coordinator for Newmont Metallurgical Services states. None of the available polypropylene, cotton or canvas bags had the needed combination of properties. "Our original tests in 1987 on the plastic bags we had been using showed an average loss of 5.4% of mud sticking to the bags when they were emptied into drying pans. Part of the sample was still in the bag as a residual." Tests on bags of "Tyvek" showed low residuals when the samples were dried in the bags before they were emptied, but about 3% of the fines were lost through the seams. Mooney recommended a new bag design, with fold-over seams.

In the early 1900s, vat leaching was a common process for treating gold ores. It was, however, labor intensive and was abandoned in the 1930s. Technology advances in recent years, though, have caused vat leaching to once again become a viable alternative in precious metal processing. At least three plants have been built. Others are being considered as alternatives to agitation and heap leaching. What is vat leaching? Vat leaching is a process in which ore is crushed and screened to a size of between 6 to 12 mm ( 0.25 to 0.5 in.) This crushed ore is placed in a large, boxlike container where an alkaline-cyanide solution is added and later removed. The process might be likened to indoor, controlled heap leaching. The ore does not require fine grinding in a ball mill. Therefore, capital and operating costs are lower than agitation treatment. But the extra handling causes costs to be slightly higher than heap leaching. If any amount of fines is present, the ore should be agglomerated.

Cyprus Gold NZ Ltd will be recovering residual cyanide from their CIT, operation in New Zealand. The process will use air to strip the cyanide from the acidified barren pulp. DSffi. Industrial Development, who were involved in the bench and pilot studies for Cyprus, have extended the concept to pregnant pulp. The stripping of pregnant pulp eliminates the substantial loss of cyanide through carbon catalysed oxidation during the adsorption stage. A 50% increase in cyanide recovery was obtained from an extensive laboratory investigation. The presence of a cyanide recovery circuit enables leaching to be conducted, without detriment, at pHs at least as low as 9, with consequential 50% reductions in the consumption of lime and sulphuric acid. There should be a small reduction in carbon consumption, and a significant improvement in the quality of the final effiuent, at least in terms of cyanide, cyanates, copper, zinc and sulphur. A small but significant increase in gold recovery can be expected too. There is a net economic advantage of NZ$1.20/tonne of ore by stripping pregnant rather than barren pulp.

Carbon-in-pulp (CIP) is the preferred method of gold recovery om cyanided plp. However, other gold adsorbents (namely, ton-exchange resms) are being introduced to the industry as they are considered to have several advantages over carbon for the recoery of gold. A set of test methods have been developed by the industry to evaluate the quality of different carbons. owever, many ?f these tests are not applicable to evaluating ton-exchange resms. Hence, a need has arisen for a method to evaluate the different adsorbents. This paper introduces a philosophy to evaluate an adsorbent that results in an estimation of the capital cost and the operating cost associated with the adsorbent. Tests that have been devel­ oped to evaluate the ability of an adsorbent to adsorb gold (in­solutton . counter-current) and to evaluate the optimum adsorbent for a specific pulp (in-pulp batch) are introduced. A method of converting the test data into an economic dimension is present­ed. Case studies are presented to highlight the discussion.

Since 500 B.C. Mt. Penteli has been famous as white marble production site, which provided the birthstones for the construction of Athens Acropolis and Parthenon. The Aloula quarry belongs to ?Dionyssomarble S.A.?, a commercial and industrial marble company, which retreated after 1940. Disturbance in the site was minimal since then. In July of 1994 the reclamation started by a group of quarry workers from Paros, already familiar with traditional marble quarrying techniques, unchanged from antiquity to 1940. The project was complete in 1997. Our main objectives have been to show respect to the area and the art of people, to let nature guide our choices, to use only local stone as a construction means, to imitate the old construction rules and to turn the land use into amenity and civilization. Aloula quarry will become a site restored for amenity and civilisation, including ancient quarrying techniques. The restored quarry is already open to the public, though to a small number of visitors, and soon will become an amenity park and an open space museum of the ancient quarrying art.

This paper addresses the question ?What constitutes the right level of investment in community goodwill?? Mining companies are still grappling with this subject even though the business case for community investment has been accepted at a general level, as a strategy for competitive differentiation, risk mitigation and a desire to deliver - and to be seen to deliver - a ?net benefit? to affected communities. Gaining senior management commitment to long term social projects, by definition characterized by uncertainty and complexity, is made easier if projects are shown to benefit the site?s strategic goals. Case study research amongst mining companies, including interviews with social investment decision-makers, has assisted in developing a SI-DAT (Social Investment Decision Analysis Tool), a decision model for evaluating social projects in order to create value for both the company and community. Multi-criteria decision analysis techniques integrating business planning processes with social impact assessment have proved useful in assisting mining companies think beyond seeking access to required lands and peaceful relations, to how they can meet their business goals and contribute to regional development.

Introduction The Mineral Resources Institute, The University of Alabama, has for the past three years been engaged in a program to develop a beneficiation system for eastern (Devonian) oil shales. One objective of that program was to evaluate advanced technologies for effecting a kerogen-mineral matter separation. Column flotation was among the advanced technologies selected for evaluation. Early in the program it was shown that column flotation was superior to conventional (mechanical) flotation and to the other advanced technologies being evaluated. The investigation then proceeded toward the further objective of defining the optimum operating conditions for column flotation. One observation made in the course of optimization testing was that introducing the feed into the froth (above the pulp-froth interface) resulted in an improved combination of concentrate grade and kerogen recovery. This observation was reported in a previous paper (Schultz and Bates, 1989). Because the practice of maintaining the pulp froth interface below the feed point is contrary to "conventional" practice, it was decided to subject the observation to a systematic series of tests. This paper describes a recent series of tests and the results that were obtained. Experimental equipment and procedure The arrangement of the column cell and auxiliary equipment for continuous flow testing is shown schematically in Fig. 1. The feed sump [O] is filled with a sufficient volume of prepared sample to permit a large number of tests to be performed (typically 12). Past experience has shown this is necessary to control sample variability and variability in the size distribution resulting from ultra fine grinding. The feed slurry is maintained at about 20% solids and is constantly recirculated and stirred. The sample is metered from the circulating pipe by a peristaltic pump [O]. The feed slurry is diluted with reagentized water [O] by a second peristaltic pump [O]. Wash water [O], also reagentized, is supplied through a third peristaltic pump [O]. While this feed system may seem unduly complex, it does permit users to independently vary either the wash water rate or the net solids content of the cell. In the tests reported here, the feed rate and net percent solids were constant at 12.5 gms/min. and 3.3%, respectively. Diluted feed enters the column through 6.35 mm-diam (0.25 in.-diam) copper tubing and is discharged upwardly at the center of the column. Tailings are discharged through flexible tubing that can be adjusted so as to control the position of the pulp-froth interface. The column is 76.2 mm-internal-diam (3 in.-internal-diam) and 1090 mm (43 in.) high. It is made from lucite tubing and is fitted with a 51-mm-diam (2-in.-diam) fritted glass air sparger having an average pore diameter of 50 µm. In performing a series of tests, the concentrate and tailing are allowed to discharge continuously. The system is allowed to equilibrate for 30 minutes after the pulp and froth reach operating levels. Concentrate and tailing samples are taken simultaneously for timed intervals (five to 15 minutes, depending on the volume of sample desired). After sampling, a change in operating conditions is made and the system is again allowed to equilibrate. The tests to determine the effect of the pulp-froth interface level were part of a larger series of tests in which the objective was to optimize the conditions for a rougher flotation stage in a two stage circuit. The sample used in this series of tests was an Alabama shale ground to d90 = 23.1 µm and d50 = 7.9 µm. The operating conditions remaining constant in this series of tests were as follows: Column height - 1600 mm (63 in.) Air sparser - 50 µm (average pore diameter) Spray water - 130 cc/min. Feed rate - 12.5 gm/min (0.4 oz per min) (dry solids) Percent solids - 3.3% Frother (Dowfroth 250) - 45 ppm The variable test conditions are tabulated in Table 1. Positions of the pulp level (pulp froth interface) and feed entry are presented as a percentage of column height (as measured from the face of the air sparser). That’s the challenge a joint venture of several tunneling contractors faced when starting its portion of the $1.9 billion Northgate Link Extension in 2013, and the project is still keeping them busy three years later. Completion will mean just a 14-minute ride from Northgate to downtown for an extra 60,000 passengers by 2030. The transit lines will join 58 km (36 miles) of new and under-construction light rail lines running north, east and south from Seattle.Voters, tired of long commute times, approved the project, a key part of Seattle’s regional mass transit system, in 2008. The extension is part of a plan adopted by the Sound Transit board in 1996 to connect the region’s major activity centers. The Northgate project is meant to relieve one of the area’s most congested traffic areas by connecting the Northgate, Roosevelt and University District neighborhoods to existing routes including downtown Seattle and SeaTac airport.Sound Transit dedicated more than a quarter of the project’s estimated expense — $440 million -— to general contractor JCM Northlink LLC to handle the tunnel segment. JCM is a joint venture formed in 2013 between Jay Dee Contractors of Livonia, MI, Frank Coluccio Construction of Seattle, WA and Michels Corp. of Brownsville, WI. The contractors regularly collaborate on large-scale projects and brought experience working on a different section of the extension they completed in 2013.JCM project leaders knew immediately that the schedule would be demanding. They had to work around the clock, six days a week to meet deadlines. The extension runs through highly populated areas, meaning contractors had to follow strict city noise restrictions between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. Plus, supervisors needed to manage the scheduling of nearly 250 employees to keep work running smoothly.“We had eight different operations and four different subcontractors trying to work in one tunnel,” said Chris Wood, JCM site project superintendent. “It’s important that we keep work linear. That’s the biggest challenge: keeping a path in and out so you can pour concrete, keep electricians and carpenters going, and accomplish everything else.”"

Introduction Mine operators are interested in energy conversation in two ways. With our finite sources of energy, we are concerned for future generations. In addition, as mine operators, we want to minimize energy costs. Moving material represents a substantial amount of the energy used in mining operations. Wheeled vehicles are used extensively to move materials. And they derive all their energy from fuel. Energy is also required to overcome the vehicle's inertia, and internal and external frictional forces. Included in the vehicle's frictional forces is its suspension. Tires are an important part of this suspension. What influence do tires have on the overall fuel consumption of the vehicle? Does tire construction affect this influence? As far back as 1896, it was apparent that tires were a factor in fuel consumption. A test was devised in France using a coal-fueled steam-driven auto. The test measured whether there was any fuel savings with the new pneumatic tires rather than of the then commonly used solid tires. The result was a 28% savings in water and a 29% savings in coal on pneumatic tires. Today, the pneumatic tire is accepted, but there are differences in present constructions. Tire Construction: Bias vs Radial There are basically two types of tire construction, bias and radial. Bias tires have been around for about 60 years. Radial tires are more recent. They were developed to improve a tire's ability to withstand higher speeds and loads, as well as to improve tire life and vehicle handling. Another advantage of the radial tire is its lower rolling resistance. This characteristic results in lower fuel use by a vehicle. This has been demonstrated with passenger cars and over-the-road trucks. It is now being demonstrated with earthmoving equipment. A basic description of both types of tire construction should now be reviewed: The casing of a bias-ply tire is made up of crisscrossed textile plies or layers. The cords of these plies run on a bias, from bead to bead. The cords of each ply run on an angle relative to the cords of the adjacent plies. As the tire rolls and deflects, the angle between the cords changes, like the blades on scissors (Fig. 1). The cords of one ply pull one way, and the adjacent ply pulls another, straining each other. Fullers earth has been mined since about 1920 in southwest Georgia and the adjoining area of Florida. In 1935, the mineral was named "attapulgite" after the source of a sample near the town of Attapulgus, Decatur County, Georgia. Mining and processing of the clay was described in a 1930 publication1 at a time when petroleum refiners were the major users. In the years since then, the uses and users of attapulgite have multiplied, and both mining methods and processing methods have been changed to optimize the clay for the new uses. A comprehensive review of the properties and applications of attapulgite 2 has been published. Only a brief review will be given here to explain the properties being sought and to show how these properties are optimized by mining and processing practices.

The theory, definition and practical application of cutoff grades have evolved over a long period. This evolution is reflected in the continuing flow of papers on this and other related matters though the rate has varied as new ideas and theories have become understood and applied in practice. Papers by Lane(l) in 1964 and Taylor(-2)- in 1972 provided landmarks in the understanding and general communication of cutoff grade theory and its application. The reasons for the continuing interest in cutoff grades are obvious. Too high a cutoff can reduce the mineral recovered and possibly the life of a deposit. Too low a cutoff would reduce the average grade (and hence profit) below acceptable levels. This paper provides a brief overview of existing cutoff grade theory and some particular aspects of its application.

To a novice in the field of biooxidation, the infonnation presented is often confusing and sometimes even incorrect. Infonnation has also been published that is misleading in that it highlights a particular feature of a process that is either totally irrelevant or of no consequence to the ultimate goal viz. achieving the maximum economical gold recovery. To assist a potential user of biooxidation in evaluating the available published infonnation some guidelines or considera­tions for some of the more important aspects are given, as well as some extracts from publications that demonstrate the manner in which information has been presented.
