The solution mining review did not arrive in time for publication in the May issue. The term solution mining is commonly used to refer to heap leaching, dump leaching, in situ mining and bore hole slurry mining technologies. The US Bureau of Mines is continuing with research in these areas. Commercial application of these technologies is progressing. There is an ongoing cooperative research project between the Bureau of Mines and the Santa Cruz Joint Venture to evaluate in situ copper mining at a field site near Casa Grande, AZ. The project is currently in the environmental permitting stage. The Bureau is preparing an environmental assessment for the project as part of the National Environmental Policy Act. The mechanisms of release of arsenic in gold mine tailings were investigated. The highest concentration of dissolved As (75 mg/L) was observed near the base of the tailings impoundment, in close association with a peat layer. Elevated concentrations of reduced iron and hydrogen sulfide were also measured at the base of the impoundment. High numbers of iron-reducing and sulfate-reducing bacteria were detected at depths within the impoundment which correlated with dissolved As, Fe and H2S. The data presented in this paper suggest that arsenic is released from the tailings by bacterially-mediated reductive dissolution of As-bearing iron minerals.

The adsorption of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) of molecular weight 25,000 onto alumina was studied as a function of pH. The adsorption isotherms were also determined. The adsorption density increases with increasing pH, while the isotherms are rounded and of the low affinity type. Electrokinetic studies indicate that the electrophoretic mobilities are reduced in magnitude in proportion to the PVA concentration, without any shift in isoelectric-point (iep). This resembles the influence of an indifferent electrolyte. The calculated values of the free energy of adsorption between alumina and PVA are suggestive of hydrogen bonding. FTIR spectro-scopic data provide additional evidence in support of hydrogen bonding.

Cosmo Howley is a gold deposit in the Northern Territory of Australia. The geology is complex and the input of geological data is an important part of the grade control process. As the geology of the deposit has become better understood, grade control and mining techniques have evolved to meet the changing circumstances. Present grade control depends on the use of angled blast holes, 21/2 benches and selective mining. Data is processed on site using 2 386 PC's running Surpac software. An environmental protection programme is employed, including soil stripping and stockpiling, sulphide waste containment and water quality monitoring.

Grinding balls, simple in shape, are actually sophisticated machine components and essential elements of mineral grinding mills. Their physical properties and quality must be adequate to achieve design life and grinding mission with few failures. Consistent properties and freedom from breakage are essential. Size, mass, hardness profile, chemistry, and microstructure are important variables that should be designed, specified, controlled, and verified to achieve optimal mill performance. Failure to specify ball properties in detail or failure to obtain required ball properties and quality can cause milling productivity losses and excessive costs that could endanger a milling operation's survival in the competitive mineral industry.

An application of water-system magnetizing technology for the mineral processing and hydrometallurgy is introduced in this paper. The water-system magnetizing technique flotation and cyanidation leaching test of vein-ore of gold-bearing and conventional technique flotation and cyanidation leaching of gold-bearing vein-ore was carried out. The best condition of water-system magnetizing was determined by orthogonal test. The results have shown that the water-system magnetizing technology may increase the efficiency of flotation and cyanidation leaching for gold. The industry-scale test results also show that it can increase flotation recovery by 1-3% and leaching extraction by 3-5% of a gold-bearing vein- ore. The interaction of magnetizing water-system with minerals was carried out and initially investigated.

Previous work by the authors has shown that the performance of a flotation column can be improved by the use of horizontal baffles. These baffles prevent axial mixing and also reduce "churning" of the froth by breaking up or preventing the formation of large air bubbles. In this paper, results from tracer experiments are presented that show the effects of horizontal baffles on the reproducibility and stability of the column operation. The baffles prevent random disturbances, such as unusually large air bubbles and turbulence, from rapidly propagating along the height of the column. Because these factors are responsible for much of the variations in column performance between tests, the result is that the horizontal baffles make the column performance more reproducible, with fewer short-term variations.

The first 0.7 m3 (1 cu yd) diesel load- haul-dump vehicle (LHD) arrived at the Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, SD in I969 to muck a ventilation drift. Others soon followed. Mechanization has subsequently changed stoping methods, manpower requirements, ventilation practice, the definition of minable reserves, and it has impacted safety and health. These have all had a direct bearing on the economics of producing gold ore from deep underground. Mechanized mining Before mechanization, production quotas at Homestake were met by several open cut-and-fill (OCF) mining methods. OCF mining relied on jackleg and wagon drilling, electric and compressed air slushing and cribbed raises brought up through the fill. Even square- set stoping was used until about eight years ago. The mine became 100% mechanized in 1988. The two current stoping methods are mechanized cut-and-fill (MCF) and vertical crater retreat (VCR). In 1992, MCF accounted for 54’S, VCR for 44% and development/uphole for 2% of the 1.4 Mt (1.55 million st) of underground ore produced. These methods are typically ramp- based and use diesel-powered LHDs, trucks, pneumatic drill jumbos and utility vehicles. Electric LHDs and rubber-tired compressed air muckers have also been used in VCR scrams. Pfarr (1991) and Mitchell (1980) provide good overviews of current production methods.

INTRODUCTION Friction Rock Stabilizers, commonly called Split Sets,tm* have been under development since early 1973. Five years of intensive laboratory and field testing led to their introduction to the metal mines in the United States in the fall of 1976. Actual sales started in February of 1977 and, to date, over five million units have been marketed to metal mines. The present rate of useage is near 3 1/2 million units per year which is approximately 50 per cent of all roof fixtures used in the United States metal mining industry. A major problem facing the coal mining industry today is the need to meet more stringent dust standards due to quartz. When secondary suppress ion is not adequate, the time-consuming and costly cut-and-try method of modifying the mining machine is used in the hope that it will reduce dust generation. The Coal Cutting Technology Group, at the Bureau of Mines' Twin Cities Research Center, has developed an inter-active computer program for drum- type cutting systems to help identify, in advance, modifications that offer the best potential for reducing dust. The program, Relative Dustiness Indicator (REDI), evaluates machine dimensions, seam characteristics, and operator-controllable variables for dust generaton, energy, forces, and product ion.

Peat has unique physical, chemical and biological properties. These include high porosity and water retention, high absorption and adsorption properties, and high buffering capacity. In addition, peat is a rich medium for microorganism activity. Peat has traditionally been used for horticultural purposes. However, in recent years, peat is increasingly being used for waste- treatment purposes. This paper reviews North American literature on the use of peat for waste-treatment applications. The literature indicated that peat has potential for use in the treatment of municipal and on-site effluents, for the removal of low concentrations of heavy metals and for the adsorption of liquid and gaseous hydrocarbon pollutants.

This paper describes the results of a study of hydrometallurgical methods of producing sodium arsenate for the glass industry from arsenic oxide wastes occurring in carbon dioxide washing. This paper addresses the following aspects: theoretical assumptions for leaching arsenic and its oxides, experimental results of As(III) oxidation to As(V) in aqueous solutions, sodium arsenate crystallization (the system As2O5-Na2O-H2O), characteristics of the crystalline product, and pilot-plant tests using sodium arsenate in the glass industry.

Experimental investigations of single particle and interparticle breakage show that the microprocess in mills demands an energy input between 1 J/g and 10 J/g, if particles below 100 pm have to be comminuted. A system analysis of grinding media and roller mills is given in respect to the energy supply to the microprocess and the influence of the back stream caused by the compression of the material inside the active volume. The back stream diminishes the probability for capturing the particles in very fine grinding processes. Some possibilities are discussed how to solve this problem.

Paste is a high density mixture of water and fine solid particles with a relatively low water content (10-25%) such that the mixture has a consistency as measured by the ASTM slump cone test from slightly greater than zero up to nearly 12 inches (305mm). Particles of different size classes will not segregate or settle when the paste is not being agitated or when it is stationary in a pipeline. Cement may be a component of paste. Larger particles of aggregate can generally be added to a paste without greatly changing the pipeline transport characteristics. A paste may bleed water slightly when it is allowed to be motionless for periods of up to several hours, but the solids do not become so dense that the paste cannot be easily re-fluidized. The dividing line between the definition of a high density slurry and a paste is not sharp. It is a practical matter that must be considered when designing a pipeline transportation system. If the pipeline is very short, there is very little risk of plugging the pipeline with a high density slurry when flow is stopped for short time periods. With longer pipelines the mixture must remain stable without motion for periods as long as several hours to avoid pipeline plugging. The fine particles in a paste mixture can be composed of mine tailings or naturally-occurring clays, silts and fine sands. The mineralogy of the particles thus can have a wide variety from quartz and feldspar to clays, micas and even salts.

As in many other areas of the Mexican economy, the legal rules applicable to mining in Mexico have been changing fast. Mexico's mining sector is opening up to levels of international participation that were unforeseeable just a few years ago. Over the last several years, Mexico has made dramatic changes in its trade and investment policies. Many of these changes have their roots in the administrations of Miguel de la Madrid and perhaps even Jose Lopez Portillo. However, the current administration of President Carlos Salinas must be given credit for articulating, advancing, promulgating and implementing these changes. Just a few short years ago, few people believed Mexico would repeal so many of its restrictions on foreign investment and lower its average tariff level from something around 100% to less than 10%, where it is today. NAFTA and mining The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is the most comprehensive international expression of Mexico's new policies. Except perhaps for the agreements establishing the European Union, NAFTA is the most detailed trade agreement ever written, consisting of about 2000 pages. The provisions of NAFTA with the greatest relevance to the mining industry include the chapters on investment and government procurement. Many mining companies may also find the temporary work provisions relevant. Finally, no discussion of NAFTA and the mining industry would be complete without some mention of the North American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation, the so-called Environmental Side Agreement.

Cyclic voltammetric and potential step chronoamperometric techniques were used to study gold dissolution in cyanide solution. Three distinct anodic peaks and one cathodic peak appear on the voltammogram between -0.50 and 0.80 V vs. SCE. The corresponding reactions were proposed to explain the peaks and the passivations. The proposed reactions were in agreement with the effect of pH and cyanide on the magnitude of the peak currents. Cyclic voltammetric tests, with various vertex potentials, were also conducted to examine the proposed reactions. Steady-state currents at various potentials were obtained by potential step chronoamperometric technique and were compared with transient currents obtained by the cyclic voltammetric technique.

Valdez Creek Mining Co. properties consist of multiple intersecting paleo-placer channels containing appreciable quantities of coarse gold. Reverse circulation drilling, combined with geophysics, is used for both exploration and development reserve determination. Classical drill-blast-load-haul open pit mining techniques used for the 22,000 cubic yard per day production schedule required modification to compensate for arctic winter operating conditions. High wall stability problems within the glacial sediment overburden necessitated developing multiple dewatering methods and variable pit slope designs to eliminate unstable pit wall conditions. Processing mine run fluvial gravels utilized a classical winter protected screening plant-sluice box recovery system enjoying high metallurgical recoveries and zero discharge tailings disposal.

Potential large scale uses in secondary battery systems and fusion reactors together with a steady increase in demand for conventional applications, particularly in aluminum smelting, has resulted in an increasing interest in lithium and its compounds. In-situ leaching of the oxidized copper mineral resource at the San Manuel mine has proven to be a technically and economically viable method of copper extraction. Although this leaching method has been modeled to predict future production capabilities, the expected magnitude of the ultimate recovery from any portion of the present mine is not fully understood. A closely controlled test has been designed, constructed, and is now operating to determine the rate and magnitude of copper recovery. The test, initiated in June 1992, is scheduled to operate for approximately 18 months. This paper presents an overview of the test design and current results.

The World Commission on Economic Development WCED has defined sustainable development as the concept that "meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of the future generations to meet their own needs". The concept requires the integration of economic, environmental and social considerations into all decision making, fostering intra-generational equity through the alleviation of poverty by concentrating the benefits of development in lesser developed areas; and considering the needs of future generations to ensure that inter-generation equity exists. This paper is devoted to give a review of the current status quo of the discussion. It describes the achievements of the mineral industries on their progress towards sustainable development since the Milos Conference (SDIMI 2003), but also discusses future challenges and obstacles."
