Acrylic polymers have been found to be effective dispersants and stabilizers in a wide variety of mineral processing applications including rheology control in concentrated slurries. This paper will describe these low molecular weight, water-soluble polymeric dispersants and provide a basis for how they function in concentrated slurries based on computer molecular modeling and applications results. Data on homopolymers as well as copolymers of acrylic acid will be presented to demonstrate the optimization of a polymeric dispersant in preparing high solids slurries of inorganic materials such as kaolin, calcium carbonate, lime, and magnesium hydroxide.

Cu isotope fractionation in low temperature aqueous environments has been well documented. Here we apply Cu isotopes to two distinct, yet related mining problems. First, an exploration geological application where we measured copper isotope fractionation in oxidized leach caps, chalcocite enrichment blankets and hypogene mineralization in 4 porphyry copper deposits located in South western USA. Cu isotope patterns exist in the lateral and vertical distribution within the mines coupled with distinct relationships with Cu grade. Second, a hydrometallurgical application where we measured the leach fluids, feed and residues from a quick leach text of Cañariaco ores. The results indicate the relative proportions of the minerals providing Cu during leaching. Interpretations of the QLT test measurements indicate covellite is the dominant ore mineral providing Cu during leaching. Both applications clearly demonstrate the power and ability of using the Cu isotope technique to understand low temperature aqueous processed involving copper.

Consolidation Coal Company (Consol) supports an active R&D effort to improve the safe, productive mining of coal and to utilize coal in an environmentally acceptable manner. Attention will be focused on degasification of coal seams, continuous coal transport systems, earth sciences activities, and coal combustion. Brief mention will be made regarding the SO2 emissions control programs. The research program constitutes about 1.0% of Consol coal sales which positions Consol as the preeminent coal company supporting broad-based research addressing the full spectrum of the various problems associated with utilizing the nation's abundant reserves of economical, readily available fuel.

It is fundamentally important to evaluate bauxites in a realistic, commercial way on the basis of the processing technology both for the supply of existing alumina plants and for the designing of new ones. The evaluation system developped by ALUTERV-FKI consists of chemical, mineralogical, texture and technological testing. The commercial value of bauxites is basically determined by their available alumina content and the caustic soda consumption required for their processing. However, their contaminants have to be taken into consideration, too. The commercial value of bauxites also depends on the processing technology and their possibly unfavourable chemical and mineralogical composition can be /at least partially/ compensated by R&D efforts. The selection of the optimum processing technology and the effects of further developing the same are demonstrated on monohydrate bauxites containing goethite and carbonates. Some of the technological solutions /desilication or deironing of bauxites, hydrothermal treatment of the digestion residue / make at the same time possible the complex processing of the bauxites, the profitable utilization of their main components.

The western coast of South Africa hosts a significant diamond resource within gravels associated with paleo-shorelines, channels and transgressive lag deposits. Diamonds were transported from the Kaapvaal Craton to the coast largely during the late Cretaceous via the paleo-Orange river systems. On shore and near shore environments are underlain by Proterozoic metamorphic and granitic rocks which provide gully and pot hole-type traps associated with paleo-channels, basins, bays and beaches. Inner and mid-shelf environments are covered by diamondiferous, poorly lithified upper Cretaceous and Tertiary sediments. The upper Cretaceous gravels were reworked along the sediment-starved coast during much of the Tertiary. Reworking was mainly achieved during marine flooding events which produced lag gravels along the paleo-shorelines. This process reworked the diamonds from low-grade Cretaceous gravels and concentrated them in higher-grade Tertiary gravels.

Two optoelectronic detectors were developed by CONSOL R&D for fine coal processing applications. One sensing device is used to estimate the amount of fine coal in the solids fraction of the froth flotation tailings slurry. The other probe, based on similar technology, is capable of measuring sol ids concentrations as high as 10 weight percent in fine coal slurry streams. These patented optoelectronic sensors are installed in several CONSOL coal preparation plants and are an integral part of the fine-coal control systems.

Three substrates (MgO crystal, CaF2 crystal and Mg plate) were used to construct thin layers of Mg(OH)2. Various routes were used to modify these substrates, including surface hydration and sol-gel coating. In each case, it was found (by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy) that thin layers of Mg(OH)2 could be produced. In the case of hydrated layers, the surface morphology of the Mg(OH)2 resembles the bulk platelet shape of precipitated Mg(OH)2.

Froth flotation has been shown to be an effective method for reducing Loss-on-Ignition (LOI) of ponded or landfilled fly ash. Reduction of LOI is required for many fly ashes, particularly those produced from low-No, burners, in order to meet ASTM requirements for use as a mineral admixture in Portland cement concrete. An additional ASTM requirement, fineness, is critical in determining end use applicability, and in many cases, classification of fly ash is necessary to produce an acceptable product. Hydraulic classification has been shown to be a simple, cost-effective method for classification of a variety of minerals including silica, phosphate, mica, coal, etc. and has shown to be similarly effective on fly ash. The combination of froth flotation and hydraulic classification facilitate the production of a high quality pozzolan that meets or exceeds ASTM specifications. This combination has been rigorously evaluated and results of pilot-scale testing are presented. Pilot scale testing was conducted on fly ash from two active utility storage ponds and demonstrated that high quality, consistent pozzolan could be produced using APT's Fast Float? Technology. Along with the pozzolan, additional production of aggregate for masonry mortar and a low sulfur, medium Btu fuel were also demonstrated. The Fast Float? process incorporates several simple unit processes to ensure pozzolan consistency; classification controls particle size distribution which is critical to achieving early strength, flotation controls the grade with respect to L.O.I. (Loss on Ignition) while dewatering controls the moisture content.

The throughput and energy efficiency of comminution circuits is reduced when ore characteristics change, causing bottlenecks in some portions of the circuit while leaving excess capacity in others. The results of analysis of three years of daily grinding circuit operating data for a full-scale plant has shown that the location of bottle-necks in the circuit will change depending on the nature of the feed ore. The circuit tends to be limited by the primary mill capacity when the ore hardness increases, and limited by the secondary mill capacity with softer ores. Two methods are considered for shifting load in the circuit to relieve bottlenecks by taking advantage of excess capacity in other parts of the circuit: 1) Addition of supplemental comminution operations, such as high-pressure grinding rolls, to process specific size fractions that are not handled efficiently by the primary mill; and 2) Use of screens to shift grinding load upstream from the secondary mills back to the primary mills. In the case of the plant examined in this study, it was found that 58% of the time there was sufficient excess capacity in the primary mills that the throughput of the circuit could have been increased by using screens to shift the grinding load from the secondary mills to the primary mills.

The Gulf Coast Region has been the center of extensive lignite exploration and development activity in the past 10 years. Currently, 27.2 Mt (30 million st) of lignite are mined annually, the majority of which is uncovered by large walking draglines. Projections indicate that production could reach 125 Mt (138 million st) by 1990. As mining moves to deeper depths, removal of overburden becomes the decisive factor in mine planning and cost. The geology of a region plays a key role in the selection of an overburden removal system. While alternate stripping methods must be analyzed to determine the most economical and operationally sound method, so far bucketwheel excavator systems seem to be the best method for removing large volumes of soft, unconsolidated material that is found at projected mining depths in the Gulf Coast region. Geology of Gulf Coast Lignites Extent Distribution of the principal tertiary lignite-bearing deposits in the Gulf Coast Lignite province extend from the Texas-Mexico border to the Alabama-Georgia state line (Fig. 1). The lignite-bearing strata includes portions of eight states: Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama. Lignites occur primarily in the Wilcox, Claiborne, and Jackson groups in the Gulf Coast. The uppermost strata of the Midway group in Mississippi and Alabama also contain significant lignite resources. Reserves Commercial lignite seams in the Gulf Coast Lignite province range from 0.6-3 m (2-10 ft) in thickness. The estimated lignite resources throughout the Gulf Coast in seams greater than 0.9 m (3 ft) in thickness and up to 61 m (200 ft) in depth currently are estimated at 32 Gt (35 billion st). Table 1 shows these resources by state. Quality Lignite quality can vary within individual mining areas and seams. However, trends in quality occur because of the depositional environment, age, and west-to-east geographical location. Better quality lignites occur in the Wilcox group in Texas and Louisiana. Poorer quality lignites occur in the northern regions of the Wilcox group and those of the geologically younger Claiborne and Jackson groups. Environmental Conditions Gulf Coast province environmental conditions are ideal for successful mine reclamation. The lignite occurs in flat to moderately rolling terrain, a topography easily reproduced from the spoil dumps or spoil rows developed during the mining operation. High to moderate rainfall facilitates rapid revegetation. Evidence from current mine reclamation programs and ongoing test plot studies indicate that mined lands can be reclaimed to reach premining productivities. Sometimes productivities are even greater than that of premining conditions. Raptors are birds of prey. In recent years, these birds have become highly regarded and have been given protection under various state and federal statutes. Surface coal mining can have both negative and positive impacts on raptors. Mitigation strategies and enhancement techniques can be implemented to alleviate negative impacts. The success of habitat reclamation will determine the long-range impact of mining on raptors.

The Revenue Act of 1926 provided for five simple categories of natural resources to have the benefit of depletion allowances. In the 1947 Revenue Act, the number was increased to twenty-five, and in the 1951 Revenue Act to fifty-four. Of this number, fourteen were allowed 5 per cent; nine, 10 per cent; twenty-nine, 15 per cent; one, 23 per cent; and one (oil and gas), 27.5 per cent. The 1951 Revenue Act created a host of difficulties, including application of the "end- use criterion" and determination of the commonly accepted meaning of such terms as limestone, dolomite, chemical- and metallurgical-grade limestone, marble, calcium carbonates, and magnesium carbonates. Dolomite, for example, was listed at 10 per cent depletion allowance, but without definition. In the great amount of litigation growing out of the 1951 Revenue Act and its administration, it became essential to understand the derivation and subsequent usage of these common geologic terms. One thing that became clear was that our definitions changed significantly between the time that the 1951 Revenue Act became law and the time that later cases were tried. Some geologists neglected to learn about first usages of such terms as metallurgical limestone, and about meanings that were applicable when the 1951 Revenue Act was written and passed. Legal meanings in this paper are discussed in the light of certain famous cases that have been tried and settled.

In the paper, the adsorption properties of dissolved ions on the surface of collophane and dolomite are studied using zeta potential measurement, ESCA and UV adsorption spectrum both in distilled water and in the supernatant of each other. Uranium tailings at Cotter Corporation's Canon City, Colorado Mill were moved to a double-lined impoundment, but uranium and molybdenum salts remaining in the fractured bedrock underlying the old tailings ponds seeped into groundwater. Fluor Daniel GTI recommended an in situ geochemical fixation remedy, flushing Best Sulfur Products' calcium polysulfide reductant into the subsurface with clean water. Residual metals became immobile, trapped in the bedrock. Fluor Daniel GTI designed and implemented the process on ten acres with high metal concentrations. Cotter is operating and monitoring the system, which can be expanded to "hot spots." The original remediation time was estimated at less than five years.

A ground-water flow model was developed to simulate the post-mining recharge rate at the Belle Ayr surface coal mine in the Powder River Basin near Gillette, Wyoming. State regulations of Wyoming require that reclaimed lands should provide a rate of recharge that approximates the pre-mining rate. Steady-state calibration and transient simulations showed that the post-mining recharge rate in backfill is at least five centimeters per year, exceeding the original infiltration rate of 0.4 centimeters per year to shallow, overburden aquifers. Major reasons for the increase include the flat topography of reclaimed areas and decreased spoil density. It is expected that the backfill will disaggregate and settle over time, eventually resulting in a nearly constant recharge rate less than five centimeters per year but somewhat greater than the pre-mining rate.

This paper summarizes the research effort in simulating the operation of "Underground Coarse-Coal Hydrotransport Systems" (UCCHS). The equipment of the system to be simulated is already optimally selected by using an analytical optimization model. The purpose of the simulation model is to test the performance of the system and to obtain the distributions of operating parameters such as water and power consumption and amount of slurry delivered to the preparation plant. Knowledge of the distributions of these parameters is essential for the efficient operation of the system.

Kidston's 14 000 t/d mine and mill complex in Queensland, Australia, started operation in January 1985. During its first 18 months of operation, the mine produced over 7000 kg (225,000 oz) of gold, making it the largest gold producer in Australia. This paper describes the planning, logistics, flowsheet, and process for the Kidston project, and some of the problems encountered during startup and the measures taken to correct these problems.

Companies are constantly searching for more effective methods of controlling and reducing costs. In recent years increased emphasis has been placed on cost reporting to the middle manager and down to the first-line foreman because this is the place where the money is really spent. Traditionally, operations management has been relegated to using cost systems designed by financial management for the use of financial management. They reflect the machinery necessary to produce profit and loss statements, and so-called cost reports emanating from these systems frequently have a heavy orientation toward product costing rather than the cost that an individual manager or foreman actually controls. In addition to direct operating costs by function or product type, they often include overhead allocations from local operations as well as from the home office. This type of full-absorption costing has many worthwhile uses but is of little or no use to operations management for cost control purposes. It is particularly discouraging to many supervisors because it includes so many categories of cost over which they have little or no control. It is for this reason that modern, aggressively managed companies are increasingly moving in the direction of responsibility cost reporting. It is the objective of responsibility cost reporting to report only direct operating costs over which the individual manager or foreman has complete control, thus facilitating cost control by fixing responsibility for cost.
