This study examined the potential of mixing rotary kiln fines (RK fines), a waste product generated when limestone is converted to lime (CaO), with acid producing mine waste to provide 1) short-term mitigation by neutralizing acid produced by iron sulfide oxidation and 2) long-term mitigation by facilitating the passivation of iron sulfide mineral surfaces. Five loadings of RK fines were mixed with 75 g of Duluth Complex rock to produce neutralization potential (NP) added: acid potential (AP) quotients of 0,0.11,0.22,0.66 and 1.1. The mixtures were subjected to wet-dry cycling laboratory testing for 585 weeks. The rock alone produced acidic drainage, with pH decreasing below 4 after about 20 weeks of reaction and ultimately reaching the approximate range of 3.3 to 3.5; sulfate release did not decrease over time. The RK fines elevated pH and inhibited sulfate release for time periods which increased with the mass of RK fines present. The pH of drainage from the 0.11 quotient (NP added1AP) loading decreased below 6.0 after 75 weeks of dissolution and decreased to 3.6 after 117 weeks, at which time the reactor was terminated. The duplicate 0.22 quotient loadings of RK fines decreased below 6.0 after 95 and 170 weeks. The former was terminated after 117 weeks, and the latter reached a minimum pH of 2.8 after 512 weeks. Drainage pH from the 0.66 quotient decreased below 6 after 581 weeks. For the drainages which acidified, the cumulative calcium release prior to pH decreasing below 6.0 was 92 to 103 percent of that initially present as calcium carbonateloxide in the RK fines. The pH of drainage from the 1.1 quotient typically remained above 8.0 throughout the period of record. Sulfate concentrations in the drainages decreased while the neutralizing fraction of the RK fines was present, but increased after this fraction was depleted.

INTRODTUCTION The use of spiral concentrators for processing fine coal particles is an old idea that has recently gained acceptance in the 11.S. coal industry. It was not onti1 the Australian Minerals Industry developed a spiral concentrator specifically for separating coal from ash in the latter 1970's and early 1980's that spiral concentrators were seriously considered as viable equipment for processing fine coal. The Wright Coal Spiral was introduced in 1980, the Mineral Deposits Limited Mark 10 Coal Spiral was introduced in 1982, and the Vickers Wyong Coal Spiral was introduced in the latter part of 1984. Each spiral design was different and utilized constant profile troughs, constant pitch troughs, compound profile troughs, and various splitter arrangements. Mineral Deposits Limited has combined the best features of the compound profile trough and constant pitch trough with critically-placed splitters to develop the MDL LD4 spiral concentrator which is a truly efficient coal washing spiral. This spiral concentrator was introduced into the U.S. Coal Industry in 1987. Recently, Mineral Engineering Technology of the United Kingdom and Multotec of South Africa have introduced their own coal spiral designs. Spiral concentrators were first installed in fine coal processing circuits in the Australian, South African, and Canadian Coal Industries in the early 1980's and in the U.S. Coal Industry in 1985. SPIRAL CONCENTRATOR SEPARATION PROCESS The separation process that occurs within the spiral concentrator trough is very complex, as it is a combination of three gravity separation processes. When the coal slurry first enters the spiral trough, each coal and ash particle and the water is subjected to centrifugal forces. These forces cause the water, light coal particles, fine heavy ash particles, and medium middlings particles to the outer vertical portion of the spiral trough. The coarse ash particles and the coarse middling particles remain on the inside of the spiral trough. The center or transitional area of the trough contains a mixture of middlings particles and near-gravity material that is present in the slurry, as shown in Figure 1. At the same time the coal and ash particles are suhjected to centrifugal forces, the trough design (both profile and pitch) causes the particles to be subjected to flowing film and stratified bed separations. The combination of these three separations, whose efficiency is dictated by the spiral troogh design, will effect the separation of the lighter coal particles from the heavier ash and middlings particles. As the slurry flows down the spiral, the profile and pitch design of the trough will counteract the centrifugal forces on the fine, heavy ash particles and fine middlings particles and cause them to migrate from the vertical portion of the trough to the center or inner portion of the trough. At the same time, any heavy particles trapped in the transitional area of the trough will be forced to migrate to the inner edge of the trough and any coal particles will be forced to migrate to the outer edge of the trough. SPIRAL SPLI'TTEP ARRANGEMENT The critical placement of splitters along the inner edge of the trough for removal of the heavy ash particles as the slurry flows down the trough further enhances the separation of the coal particles. At the bottom of the spiral trough are product splitters arranged to make a final separation of the slurry stream into clean coal, middlings, and refuse products.

Diethylenetriamine (DETA) is a selective depressant for nickeliferous pyrrhotite during pentlandite flotation. Laboratory flotation tests conducted on ore and process samples showed that pyrrhotite rejection is greatly improved by small additions of DETA; however, the effectiveness of this depressant is most noticeable when the mineral sample is oxidized. LIMS and XPS analyses conducted on flotation products and pyrrhotite specimens showed that the difficulty in pyrrhotite rejection arises from inadvertent activation of the mineral by heavy metal ions, such as Ni2+, cu2+ and Ag+, that are present in the process water. In the presence of DETA, however, the mineral is deactivated under oxidizing conditions. The deactivation mechanism may involve oxidation of the activation products, which are likely in the form of heavy metal sulfides, followed by solubilization by DETA. FTIR spectra of pyrrhotite electrodes contacted with DETA showed no trace of the reagent on the surface, substantiating the view that its role is one of complexing agent that enhances the dissolution of activation products under oxidizing conditions. FTIR spectra of pyrrhotite contacted with amyl xanthate solutions showed that both dixanthogen and iron xanthate are formed on the surface, the latter becoming more predominant at higher potentials. In the presence of DETA, however, only a small amount of xanthate is adsorbed on the mineral at potentials (Eh) approximately 200 mV higher than the case without DETA.

Basic to solving the problem of the role of radon transport on radon concentrations in mines is to establish whether it occurs primarily as diffusion and forced flow through porous rock or through fissures in the rock. The laboratory experiments performed involved measurements of diffusion and emanation coefficients, porosity and permeability of representative rock samples. Significant differences have been found when comparing the results of the laboratory permeability determinations to those of the mine determinations. Considerations of underlying principles, however, suggest that the diffusion and emanation coefficients are the same in laboratory and mine. It was also found that moisture content plays a dominant role in radon transport through rock. Using these concepts and findings, some conclusions about the radon concentrations in mines have been drawn.

Most mining applications of geostatistical simulation are to the simulation of quantitative variables, such as grade. In many instances the occurrence of quantitative variables and the values they take are controlled, at least partially, by qualitative, or categorical, variables. Examples include quartz-vein controlled gold orebodies and stratigraphic silver/lead/zinc deposits. In these cases a realistic simulation must include geological controls on the spatial distribution of the simulated quantitative variables. This paper describes extensions to, and algorithms for, the truncated plurigausian method of simulating categorical variables. The categorical variables are modelled as indicator random functions that represent the presence/absence of the variable at spatial locations. Stochastic images of the distributions are obtained by truncation of realisations of two Gaussian random functions simulated at the same locations. Parameters required are the thresholds for truncation of the Gaussian variables and the covariance structure of each Gaussian random function. These parameters are estimated from the experimental proportions of each variable and indicator direct and cross semi-variograms. A detailed case study is shown in order to illustrate the procedure, to discuss the results and to present the algorithms for plurigaussian simulation.

This work presents a study of characterization of activated carbons for the adsorption of Au(CN)2- complex. A comparative study of six samples of activated carbons, three Brazilian and three produced out of Brazil was made in order to determine their qualification for a performance in adsorption circuits in the extractive metallurgy of gold. The adsorptive capacity and the kinetics of adsorption were compared to the physical and chemical properties of each one. The influence of poluant ions on the kinetics and loading capacity of aurocianyde anion was also determined.

This presentation will describe the underground excavation at the Bad Creek Pump Storage project. It consists of approximately 3,650 m of various size tunnels ranging from 4.2 m to 9.0 m finished diameter, a powerhouse cavern 45 m high by 135 m long by 22.5 m wide, and 422 m of 9 m diameter shaft. A total of 350,000 m of rock will be excavated, hauled, and placed in a submerged wier. Temporary rock support consisting of shotcrete and/or rockbolts is installed as required.

Chemical and electrochemical studies were performed during bioleaching of cobaltite concentrate with Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. The two principal minerals present in the concentrate were pyrite and cobaltite (CoAsS). During chemical studies, the effect of pH on dissolution rates was examined under uncontrolled and pH-controlled conditions. It was found that in the pH range 1.5-3.0 there was no pH effect if the initial pH was not controlled (maintained). When the initial pH was controlled, the leaching of Co, As, and Fe depended strongly on pH. Electrochemical studies were performed by using cyclic voltammetry and constant potential techniques. A sequential reaction mechanism was proposed for dissolution of cobaltite.

The Bulagidun copper-gold system occurs in Tertiary andesitic volcanic rocks. It is located (figure 1, from Curless, 1991) ca. two days walk from the coast in an isolated area on the northerly slope of the main range of mountains, in steep terrain dissected by erosion. Detailed and district-scale exploration from 1988 to 1991 by BHP Minerals defined a small, sub-economic resource of gold and copper. One preliminary estimate of the resource in bedrock suggests 14.4 million tons at 0.68 grams / Tonne Au and 0.61% Cu, in multiple small bodies.

This paper evaluates the contributions of "third parties" to surplus capacity in the world metals industries in the 1980s. Special attention is given to the role of international development agencies, such as the World Bank, that have made project loans to state mining enterprises. The paper also reviews the contributions to surplus capacity of the International Monetary Fund and evaluates the large volume of credits from commercial banks to developing countries. Although the credits to Third World countries during the 1970s facilitated the expansion of mining capacity in those countries, no one source of financing can be held responsible for a significant portion of the expansion.

Introduction Based upon the 1980 Bevill Amendment to the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), a 1986 Regulatory Determination decision, and subsequent rulemakings, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) exempted all extraction and beneficiation wastes and twenty mineral processing wastes from regulation under RCRA Subtitle C (hazardous waste) regulations. These twenty mineral processing waste streams were studied in a 1990 Mineral Processing Report to Congress. For purposes of regulatory classification, EPA made special distinctions between extraction/beneficiation and mineral processing. Wastes determined by EPA to be from the extraction/beneficiation of ores and minerals retain the exemption, while wastes found to be mineral processing, except for the “special" twenty mineral processing wastes, fall within RCRA Subtitle C jurisdiction. For those wastes that are subject to RCRA Subtitle C, § 3004(m) of RCRA requires EPA to set levels or methods of treatment, of any, which would substantially diminish the toxicity of the waste or substantially reduce the likelihood of migration of hazardous constituents from the waste so that short- term and long-term threats to human health and the environment are minimized. These treatment standards are developed by EPA under the Land Disposal Restrictions (LDR) program. Under § 3004(g) (4) of RCRA, EPA is required to promulgate treatment standards for any waste that is newly identified or listed as hazardous. As part of the settlement agreement in Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) v. Reilly and Chemical Waste Management, Inc. v. EPA (1992), EPA has agreed to propose a rule by June 30, 1995 and promulgate a final rule by June 30, 1996. This rule is commonly referred to as the "Phase IV" LDR rule and will address newly identified mineral processing wastes. Other wastes that will be addressed in this rule include newly listed dyes and pigments and wood preserving wastes. Therefore, in the Phase IV rule EPA will develop treatment standards for all mineral processing wastes that have lost their Bevill exclusion. EPA is currently collecting information on the waste characterization, treatment alternatives, and disposal capacity data currently available on these wastes. The coal industry is ever changing and complex. This article discusses some problems that must be faced and their projected economic effects. Coal's dominant market is for electric power generation. While growth rates in the 1980s will be nominal compared to historic growth rates, such growth will be substantial in absolute terms because it comes from a very large base. Higher growth is expected in the 1990s. History When looking toward the future, an examination of the past is helpful. Figures 1 and 2 present production and consumption statistics (expressed in short tons) on bituminous coal and lignite in the US from 1945 onward. After an all-time peak of 572 Mt (631 million st) in 1947, total production dropped to 356 Mt (392 million st) in 1954. Sustained growth in total production did not begin until the 1960s. Coal production from under-ground mines declined from more than 400 Mt (440 million st) in 1947 to about 295 Mt (325 million st) during 1965 to 1970. A further decline ensued until a strike in 1978 reduced production to only 218 Mt (240 million st). Underground mines produced 283 Mt (312 million st) in 1983. Coal production from surface mines has increased steadily since the early 1960s. While some of this increase has come from mines east of the Mississippi River, most has resulted from surface mines developed in the West. Production from surface mines west of the Mississippi River was 224 Mt (247 million st) in 1982. Total coal production from under-ground and surface mines, other than Western surface mines, continues to approximate levels of 40 years ago. In spite of several wage increases, increasing productivity in surface and underground mines enabled the coal industry to hold the average value f.o.b. mine to about $5.50/t ($5 per st) from the end of World War II to 1969. Under-ground mine productivity peaked at more than 13.5 t (15 st) per man-day in 1969. Object-oriented technologies have been developed to more closely model the way we think about the world and our natural approach to solving problems. Higher levels of abstraction, generalization and classification are benefits of an object-oriented approach. Object-oriented programming, design, and expert systems are part of this technology which is shaping the future of real-time supervisory control. Goals of real-time supervisory control systems include: minimizing variations in process operations, improving efficiency, maximizing production, and implementing procedures for starting and stopping the process. Incorporating object-oriented technology in design, development and implementation of real-time supervisory control systems provides new opportunities for these tasks. Application of computer-based systems for ventilation process monitoring makes it possible to widen the system functions with those connected with long-term data analysis. It allows the mine ventilation engineer to carry out necessary preventive actions. In future the wide application of computers and sophisticated expert systems together with automation equipment (like remotely controlled regulators and fans) will allow to gradually introduce minewide systems for air flow control. To achieve this goal research work is carried out using data from a mine ventilation monitoring system and methods of computer analysis of time series. With the use of digital filtering the measuring signal spectrum has been divided into three subranges components of which are important with regard to various needs of mine ventilation staff as well as to monitoring and control system functions.

Careful consideration is given to the type of cleaning equipment and control systems to be used when selecting circuits for washing fine coal (0.5 mm x 0, or 28 mesh x 0, size fraction). However, desliming, declaying, and sizing procedures required for efficient operation normally are not evaluated in sufficient detail, resulting in disappointing system performance. This paper details desliming and de. watering circuit design that is effective based on recent test data. The circuit maintains control of the 0.5 mm x 0 (28 mesh x 0) (declayed) size fraction with minimal misplaced material and maximized circuit efficiency. A discussion of circuit design parameters and control systems, as well as results from the testing program, are included in this text.

The purpose of this paper is to inform members of the coal producing and consuming community about techniques used by The Carter Mining Co. to control product quality at a large surface coal mining operation. During the early years of mining operations, coal quality received adequate attention but the company's main emphasis was to build up its production rate and minimize mining costs. While these goals are still of prime importance, coal quality has received additional attention in recent years. An objective that no coal shipment should exceed any contract or company-imposed coal quality specification has been successfully met. To implement this guideline, geology and coal quality modeling procedures were improved, in-pit drilling and blending programs were refined, and detailed shipment procedures were developed.

The effects of metal solution concentration, biomass density, length of exposure time, and pH were determined for biosorption of molybdenum (Mo) and chromium (Cr) by three organisms. Results indicate that it is possible to sorb Mo and Cr from dilute solutions. Differences were observed in the abilities of an organism to sorb Mo and Cr as well as among respective abilities of the three microorganisms. This suggests an inherent selectivity of the organism which may afford the means to control a sorption-based process. Results also indicate that the metal sorption abilities of these microorganisms depend on duration of exposure, biomass density, solution pH, and the metal concentration of the solution. Each of these parameters suggests an additional means of controlling the sorption process.

Continuous mining accounts for about 69% of the nation's underground coal production. This level is not expected to change much in the near future. This is because continuous mining represents the primary means of under- ground coal production. It is also the primary means of driving development entries for underground coal mines, including longwall mines. The continuous miner worksite contains many characteristics that can lead to personnel accidents. It continues to be an area of concern for mine managers, safety engineers, and training coordinators. In an effort to assist mine management in attempts to reduce the number of accidents and injuries sustained in this area, this paper presents a loss-control-based, non-intrusive strategy for conducting safety evaluations at continuous miner worksites.

Grouting is a useful engineering tool for tunnels throughout the world. A wide variety of methods and materials are used, reflecting the broad range of geological, hydrogeological, and structural demands. Most tunnel grouting is conducted with cement, which produces acceptable results in appropriate conditions. However, there are cases where such grouts are not practical, but polyurethane grouts can be extremely useful. Regretfully, these grouts are frequently poorly understood, leading to improper application and therefore poor results. This paper provides a fundamental overview of their application, both used individually and in combination with cement. Case histories from Scandinavian practice are cited.
