The upper Animas River watershed is affected by metal-rich drainage from abandoned mines and by natural weathering of mineralized bedrock. To investigate the importance of natural metal sources, surface waters were sampled in a minimally mined but intensely altered area of the watershed. Water chemistry was strongly controlled by the degree of bedrock alteration. Propylitically altered rocks, which contain calcite, produced neutral waters with low metal concentrations, whereas quartz-sericite-pyrite alteration was characterized by acid-sulfate type waters with high metal concentrations. A mass-balance approach was used to estimate natural metal sources, which accounted for 56-905 of the dissolved metal load discharging from the study area

"""Operational excellence"" provides a sound foundation for RWE Power AG's three strategic pillars (innovation, expansion and organic growth). The maintenance and development of operational excellence in lignite mining operations at RWE Power is supported by the Continuous Improvement Process (CIP) ""immer:besser"" (getting better). Obtaining cost reductions with the aid of the CIP as a kind of value-adding self-renewal process to ensure competitive lignite mining operations and lignite-based electricity generation forms the basis for further increases in profitability and growth. Since the beginning of the 1990s, RWE Power has carried out a multitude of re-engineering projects focusing on the efficient shaping of processes with the assistance of external consultants to enable the Company to cope with the considerable need for change by swiftly implementing major efficiency levers. These also include the required adaptation and development of the organization. Since 2004, the Continuous Opencast Mine Improvement Process (""KVT"") has enabled the mines to tap significant cost reduction potential by virtue of their own strength. But there is another issue that has come into focus: the development of performance enhancement options. In 2006, the ""KVT"" process, piloted in the opencast mines, was included in the RWE Power-wide immer:besser (i:b) programme (Figure 1)."

To reduce their sulfur emissions, many coal-fired electric power plants use wet flue-gas scrubbers. These scrubbers convert sulfur oxides into solid sulfate and sulfite sludge, which must then be disposed of. Currently, the major markets for scrubber sludge are for manufacture of gypsum products, such as wallboard and plaster, and for cement. However, the quality of the raw sludge is often not high enough or consistent enough to satisfy manufacturers, and so the material is difficult to sell. Other markets, such as paper manufacture and plastics fillers, have even more stringent quality requirements and will not accept raw sludge at all. In the work described in this paper, several reagents have been examined to determine their ability to selectively improve the flotation of the unreacted limestone contaminant away from the desirable products (calcium sulfite and gypsum). The most success has been achieved using a cationic collector, which shows a higher selectivity between calcium sulfite and calcium carbonate than do the anionic collectors that were studied.

In developing nations, novel mineral processing methods like bacterial leaching are gaining prominence. The principles and practices for isolation and preservation of cultures used in bacterial leaching are discussed with special reference to cultures used in leaching copper from Indian ores. In all, 145 potentially useful microorganisms such as iron- and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria were isolated from various ecosystems of the copper mining areas in the country. The major organisms isolated by enrichment culture technique belonged to T. ferrooxidans and T. thiooxidans species. In addition, thermophilic cultures like Sulfolobus sp. and thermophilic thiobacilli were also isolated. The process of copper leaching was scaled up to the 300-kg level in PVC columns. Since the preservation of efficient cultures in active state was vitally important, a new method was devised that preserved the activity of thiobacilli for a period of more than two years. The novel method of storage in sterile chalcopyrite ore at 8°C can be considered an important advance.

The paper discusses the legislative and practical approach adopted to problems of management of environment in relation to coal mining in a very sensitive area of the south coast of New South Wales. The environmental problems are complicated in this area due to multiple and very often conflicting land usages. The environmental approach in relation to water quality maintenance, noise control and air quality is discussed and methods adopted meet stringent requirements. The purpose of this paper is to describe the possible application of two relatively new technologies: flat load cells, and improvement seeking computer programs (referred to in the literature as heuristic programs); to a very old problem, inventors control of ball mills. The combination of these two technologies seems most applicable to grate discharge mills operated closed circuit. It is possible that other applications such as controlling the inventory of autogeneous mills might also be found. Direct control of ball mill inventory has been the goal of a number of investigators over many years. Many patents and articles on the subject have claimed success, but operating installations are hard to locate. An excellent review of the advantages and problems of direct inventory control is contained in an article by Oswald and Ziegler (1). Figure 1 is a conventional representation of throughput vs. inventory with other factors such as slurry consistency and rock twee held constant. There are common sense, physical arguments? and experimental evidence supporting the existence of a unimodel curve of this twee? though direct measurement of the shape is difficult and how it moves as rock type changes is riot well known. Figure 2 represents the problem faced by all mass measurements of inventory, a tare weight of about 25 time the inventory mass. This paper presents the results of grinding tests performed on magnetite from Kiruna (Sweden) and on chromite from Skoumtza (Macedonia. Greece). Stresses were measured by XRD, which determined the variations in the characteristic structural spacings of the minerals both before and after, grinding in a HSM/250 Herzog laboratory ring mill. Anal Isis of the magnetite and c hromite crystallinstallin was performed hi measuring the broadening of the strongest diffraction peak (311). .Also, structural analysis on chromite was carried out using the Mikheev model. Ultrafine-grinding tests on the magnetite and chomite demonstrated that this type of treatment can induce profound variations m the surface-stress state. These included plastic variations of the cell followed by "chemical" stress with oxidation front the stricture to form hydroxide or carbonate, films. This can have a great influence on the mineral reactivity to flotation reagents

The folded Appalachians are a physiographic province of eastern North America extending from Nova Scotia to Alabama. The province strikes through the state of Pennsylvania (see Fig. 1) comprising roughly 20 percent of the state and it is here that the focus of this paper will attend. The province is a thick sedimentary sequence which was compressed into a folded mountain belt by the Appalachian Orogeny which terminated at the end of the Permian. The stratigraphy contains both carbonate and non-carbonate rocks as a reflection of the depositional environment at any specific time and place during the Paleozoic geosynclinal accumulation. Although a great deal of variety and difference exists in the geology from one end to another, a common thread of structural and stratigraphic style exists. Carbonate rocks, limestones and dolomites, comprise a substantial percentage of the total Appalachian stratigraphy and are interbedded with clastic materials such as sandstones, siltstones, and shales. The carbonate rocks are extensively mined and collectively represent a vast economic resource.

Precious metal mineralization at Mt. Hamilton" Nevada is associated with a poly-metallic, garnet-pyroxene skarn system developed in middle to upper Cambrian calcareous shales, limestones and dolomites. The skarn is developed around the Cretaceous Seligman and Monte cristo calc-alkaline stocks. Gold is associated with intense retrograde alteration. Later epithermal quartz veins containing gold, silver, base-metal sulfides, and sulfosalts cross-cut skarn alteration. Westmont Mining Inc. is currently developing two mineralized zones containing a geologic resource of approximately 7.7 M.T., which averages 0.05 OPT gold and 0.5 OPT silver. The project will have an estimated mine life of seven years, with a planned annual production rate of 35,000 ounces of gold and 300,000 ounces of silver.

INTRODUCTION The project described in this paper is designed to provide a standard and flexible method by which data can be exchanged among different systems and packages in common use for geo- logical modelling and mine planning, with substantial savings in ad hoc programming which is expensive and produces interface software that is difficult to maintain. Such packages include specialised applications such as Vulcan, Surpac, Datamine, and Gemcom software, and the Whittle pit optimisation programs, and more general products such as AutoCad, Microstation, and Maplnfo, and database management systems through a generic SQL interface. The data translator is built around the CSIRO Data Model and GeoEditor, and will make widely available the benefits of the Data Model by adding functionality to its implementation in an industry- standard language and style, with interfaces to important geological and mining software products used by the industry, while including also the visualisation and editing capabilities of the GeoEditor which provides the functional framework within which the Data Translator is developed. The Data Translator is intelligent in the sense that it is not a black-box solution but allows visualisation and validation of data during transfer; furthermore it provides a means for changing abstraction levels during the transfer operation. There have been few similar efforts to address this problem. It is not a problem which is likely to be solved in any general or long- term way by any individual commercial software vendor. THE CSIRO DATA MODEL A wide variety of software tools have entered the exploration and mining industries via different pathways. Examination of these pathways and the origins of the software illuminates the types of data transfer problems and difficulties which might occur in the day to day life of exploration and mining operations. In exploration, the focus is normally on a large area (>5000km2) which is explored primarily in two dimensions. For 20 exploration purposes, geographical information systems (GIs) software, image processing software, and, in some cases, 20 computer aided design (CAD) software have been employed. Typically, GIs soft- ware is used the most by lands and tenements personnel and government geological survey organisations, image processing software is used the most by geophysicists, and 20 CAD software is used the most by drafting and geology personnel. In contrast, within the mining environment, almost all activities have 3D character. In this realm, 3D CAD software and specialised mine planning and design software are important. Specialised mine planning and design software is similar to 30 CAD software, but typically has additional capabilities such as specialised modules for surveying, drill hole data operations, open pit design and optimisation, underground mine design, mining block model creation, and/or ore reserve calculations. Unfortunately, the different origins of the software in exploration and mining lead directly to problems in data exchange and the design of seamless software systems. These problems result from the different data management strategies employed by the different classes of software. In order to address these problems, CSIRO Exploration and Mining and CSIRO Division of Information Technology have been investigating the structure, character, and syntax of data and soft- ware present in computer-aided exploration and mining activities since early 1993. The goal of this effort is to 1) systematically ex- amine the breadth and depth of the data in use within exploration and mining, and to 2) promote a data organisation strategy which is broad enough and comprehensive enough to enable wiser soft- ware design and easier data transfer. In the short term a data model can be used to improve data transfer; in the longer term it is hoped that a data model framework will help object-oriented concepts to enter the next generation of geoscientific software. The data model is described in more detail by Power et al., 1995. THE DATA TRANSLATOR PROJECT The CSIRO Data Model provides a basis for a very wide range of applications in geology and mining. Bismuth, "the green metal," has become an important substitute for lead. The uranium industry was never really dead, anti-nuclear activists just wanted the world to think it was. And diamonds are fast becoming a miner's best friend. These commodities and others were discussed in May 1997 at the 47th Annual Minerals Processing Division meeting, held at the Broadmoor resort in Colorado Springs, CO. The meeting was put on by the SME Colorado subsection and was attended by about 115 people. In addition to the above three commodities, attendees learned more about the state of the copper industry, as well as lead and zinc and gold and silver. The program also included discussions of molybdenum, platinum and project financing. The following is a summary of some of the presentations.

During the latter part of the twentieth century exploitation of mineral resources, and gold mining in particular, experienced a resurgence in Europe, with major mining houses and many junior companies involved in exploration and subsequent mine development. Gold projects in particular were actively encouraged and exploration programmes and permitting studies initiated in more than 15 countries, both within the European Union (EU) and the former eastern bloc. During the initial period, governments in many countries provided active support. Following a series of negative environmental mining incidents in the latter part of the century public opinion, often ill-informed, led to political pressure to withdraw governmental assistance. This in turn resulted in the revocation of exploration licenses, and ultimately to the failure to develop a number of potentially world-class mines within the region. Despite these setbacks, gold production in Europe continues, and is probably higher now than 20 years ago. The mining industry is currently coming to terms with both changing attitudes of governments, and the increase in scope and prescriptive nature of legislation. Recent experiences, particularly in Greece and Turkey, exemplify the problems faced by the industry in the region, which are causing major mining companies to reconsider future activities in Europe. The paper presents an overview of European gold mining and its environmental performance in the context of international practice, new legislation, and public perception of mining generally. The rationale of governments in withdrawing support for the industry is questioned, and the feasibility of achieving sustainability where there is no level playing field globally is reviewed. The question is posed to governments, regulators and mining companies alike as to whether there is a future, not only for gold mining, but for the minerals industry in general, within the EU.

Mineral sands mining for ilmenite, rutile, and zircon will disturb over 2,500 ha of prime agricultural farmland in Virginia and North Carolina (USA) over the next 20 years. Mining of the Virginia deposit was initiated in 1997 and approximately 750 ha have been disturbed to date with approximately 150 ha reclaimed to support a mix of agricultural post-mining land uses. While considerable university research and corporate effort were devoted to developing environmental management systems and reclamation protocols for these lands, specific indicators of sustainability and restoration success were lacking. By 2003, it became apparent to the mining operator (Iluka Resources), local land-owners/farmers, local government, and the regulatory authority that testable indicators of reclamation success were essential for long-term sustainability. Virginia Tech worked cooperatively with all stakeholders to review the pre-existing research base and to propose reasonable expectations of post-mining soil productivity levels. The state regulatory authority reinforced its position on a number of associated issues including necessity of topsoil return and specific comparative crop yield targets. Virginia Tech, Iluka Resources, and a local leaseholder (Carraway-Winn family) agreed to jointly manage a 45-ha research demonstration farm where the effects of alternative soil reconstruction practices are being rigorously monitored for both row crops (corn and wheat) and forage production. All mined land crop yields are also compared to an adjacent undisturbed exceptional quality prime farmland soil. Corn and wheat yields in 2005 and 2006 were significantly above county average yields (regulatory target level) and approximately 75% of undisturbed adjacent prime farmlands. This cooperative effort allows all clientele groups to objectively assess the post-mining productivity of these mined lands while providing an invaluable educational opportunity for the mining industry.

The pioneers in pressure hydrometallurgy have provided a solid foundation during the past four decades. The pressure techniques are now capable of being used to push back the frontiers in the winning of metals. Pressure hydrometallurgy has been used to meet the objectives of extracting metals; purifying metal solutions, recovering metals; and rendering waste streams acceptable for disposal to waste repositories and the environment. Some examples of each of these functions are briefly reviewed. The applicability of pressure techniques to the recovery of precious metals is discussed.

Svedala Industries has been making lightweight aggregate (LWA) from waste materials for the last 10 years. Many claylike materials, such as coal fired boiler ash and washings from a granite quarry, can be used alone or with additional waste materials to produce commercially salable LWA.

Versatile living organisms, historically exploited as functionaries in the food processing, pharmaceutical and chemical industries, have not been successful in achieving similar or significant acceptance within the minerals industry. The current biotechnical revolution coupled with its expanded understanding, dictate that a flagging minerals industry reconsider the use of biotechnology in metallurgical applications. Living resources, either singly, in commensal association or in complex communities, are capable of duplicating fully integrated and complex processing functions. Organisms can mine and extract metals, detoxify chemical effluents and synthetically produce compounds. They have been criticized as exhibiting poor kinetics, excessive energy consumption and environmental sensitivity. However, expanding knowledge reveals that these organisms are surprisingly adaptable, variable and extremely durable. Applied biotechnology in specific cases offers favorable economic returns, environmental benefits and aesthetic value. Selective implementation of living systems can offer opportunities for reduced labor, increased productivity and technological advance. Success will not come easily. Capital must be risked, controversial decisions made and new ground plowed. Traditional, specialist thinkers will of necessity give way to interdisciplinary expertise and unorthodox methodology if success is to be achieved. Those who vigorously persevere, however, are likely to be rewarded with a dynamic and profitable new role in a restructured minerals industry.

A thorough knowledge of coal permeability and its variation with factors like stress conditions, and time, is useful in simulation studies of mine ventilation and coalbed methane recovery, as well as characterizing coalbed methane reservoirs. An experimental investigation was carried out to study the gas flow characteristics of coal to enhance the under- standing of the mechanism of methane flow through it. The work consisted of measurement of permeability of coal samples under triaxial stress and an examination of the physical structure of coal using electron microscopy. Effort was made to fit the experimental data to several phenomenological models that have been used to describe fluid flow through porous media. It was realized that gas flow through coal cannot be described by models that assume this flow to be through a bundle of capillary tubes. However, results suggest that this gas flow could be predominantly through fractures and cracks in coal, and this could be represented by flow between parallel plates.
