The emphasis in the title of this paper should be placed on the world "Total", since the detoxification of cyanide in its free and weakly-complexed form with H202 has already found application in many areas, including the treatment of mining effluents. One of the most common forms of cyanide found in gold-mill effluents is hexacyanoferrate (usually ferrocyanide), which is included in measurements of total cyanide but is too stable to be oxidized by H202 or any other conventional oxidizing agent. This has led to the view that H202 cannot be used to detoxify effluents containing hexacyanoferrates, when a limit has been set on total cyanide. A process is described in this paper which does meet this requirement, and which has already been demonstated in two Canadian gold mills. Before describing the new process, the terms "free", "total" and "weakly-complexed" cyanide will be defined as they are used in this paper.

In 1990, the Chino Smelter completed the construction of a plant designed to recover metal values and water from smelter scrubber effluent. Equipment was installed to maximize effluent recycling and minimize costs. The process utilizes magnesium hydroxide as a neutralizing agent which has the advantage of precipitating copper from solution with minimum generation of solid reaction products. The neutralized stream is clarified, with solids recycled to the smelter for metal recovery while the clarified effluent is recycled to the concentrator for use as process water.

Solid-state reduction of roast Movat chromite ore with carbon was carried out as a function of the C/FeO ratio at temperatures ranging from 800°C to 900°C. The reduction was studied using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). A two¬stage mechanism consisting of the reduction of FeO with carbon monoxide and the regeneration of CO by the oxida¬tion of carbon with CO2 was proposed. The rate-controlling step is the carbon oxidation reaction. A kinetic equation, that of random nucleation, was proposed. The activation energy for the reduction was determined to be 55,800 J/mole and is compared to those activation energies determined for other chromite ores.

Viscosities of two industrial lead blast furnace slags have been experimentally determined as functions of composition and temperature. A Brookfield viscometer with alumina rods and crucibles were used. Experiments were carried out between 1200 and 1573 K in an argon atmosphere with up to 5% addition of FeO, MgO, and SiO2 to the slags. Results showed that 1) the viscosities of two slags decreased with increase in temperature; 2) addition of FeO decreased the slag viscosities; and 3) addition of MgO and SiO2 increased the slag viscosities. Use of the above slag compositions with the addition of FeO is recommended for successful lead smelter operation.

The results of flotation of a primary desliming hydrosizer overflow material containing 14.6 wt.% P20, and 3.6 wt.% MgO are presented. The phosphate minerals were collophane and francolite and all minerals appeared to be liberated. The material had not been previously treated with flotation reagents. In the experimentation, various collectors were evaluated for effectiveness. The relative effectiveness of flotation in different flotation devices was determined. Finally a two-stage flotation scheme is proposed using column flotation of dolomite in the first stage and Denver cell flotation in the second.

In this paper, a model is developed for a resin anchor bolt system in which the smooth bar is modeled by using one-dimensional truss elements, and the resin annulus is modeled by using axisymmetric elements. These two submodels are combined and then incorporated into an existing computer code called Roofbolt. After this development, all of the components in the resin anchor bolt system, including smooth bar, bearing plate and resin annulus, can be correctly modeled.

Computerization has allowed practical design of complicated and optimized belt conveyors for bulk materials from prediction of belt tensions around the belt circuit for a wide range of belt loadings and conveyance paths. These design methods are based on a knowledge of component operating characteristics and sources of tension change. As compared to generalized 'f' methods, CEMA's historical Kx and Ky has provided nonlinear and more specific predictions of belt tension as affected by various components and operating conditions. These empirical values were developed in a different age and generalizations made in their development are now a constraint to additional conveyor improvements. "INTRODUCTION Tunneling and underground excavation is related to handling of uncertainties, risks associated with geological conditions are significant and ‘unexpected geological conditions’ often claimed. This fact was brought to the table long ago, and ITA (the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association) published its 25 Recommendations on Contractual Sharing of Risks in 1988 (Ref. 1). This public-cation constitutes an important asset to the tunneling industry in terms of being a guideline for those working with contractual issues, even today almost 30 years after being published. A more recent document is the ITIG code of practice for risk management of tunnel works from 2015 (Ref. 9). Various countries or geographical regions have their own view and tradition on risk sharing and tunnel contracts. In Scandinavia unit rates contracts are most commonly used with bid-build model, it shares risk between owner and contractor, owner retains the risk for geological conditions while contractor carries risk for performance efficiency. Rock strengthening is determined assessing rock mass quality encountered at tunnel face. Grouting is applied to stem water. Actual quantities may differ from the contract’s BoQ but a flexible contract with remuneration is installed to enable adjustment of actual quantities. Variations of quantities involve a clause to adjust construction time. Unit price contracts deals with expected and foreseen still ‘unexpected geological conditions’, if the ‘unexpected’ element results in variations in quantities. Work activities have quantities and ‘standard capacities’ for regulation of construction time. Variations in quantities are expected in tunnelling and hardly deserve the term ‘unexpected’. If truly unforeseen geological features necessitate work not included in the BoQ, then the contract must be supplemented and can be said to be inappropriate. Fixed price contracts may not provide the intended predictable cost and is as such also inappropriate in the view of a risk sharing principle, once the geological baseline proves to be incorrect. ‘Adjustable fixed price’ contracts, combining unit rate and fixed price, may prove suitable."

INTRODUCTION Homestake Mining Co. owns and operates the Bull¬dog Mountain mine near Creede, CO. Lead-silver con¬centrates are produced from ores extracted from narrow veins which dip from 1.04 to 1.39 rad (60 to 80°). An¬nual mill throughput is approximately 90 700 t (100,000 st). Ore shoots average 2 m (7 ft) in width and the ore is often weak, muddy, and poorly consolidated. Walls can be either strong or highly fractured along the strike of the veins. Cut-and-fill methods were initially selected to mine the deposit and considerable overhand mining occurred during the initial stages of the mine. Because of un¬stable ground conditions, mine management recognized that other methods would have to be employed. Undercut-and-fill mining was adapted to extract the loose ore from narrow veins and is presently the primary method used. Approximately 80% of the annual pro¬duction is extracted by this system. Loading ramps are positioned along the strike of the vein on 90-m (300-ft) intervals to allow for 45-m (150-ft) long cuts in each direction from the extraction raise. This interval was selected for efficient slusher operation and stope cycling. Loading ramps rather than chutes were selected for ore movement into 4.5-t (5-st) Granby-type cars because of extremely sticky ore conditions. Mined-out areas are filled with deslimed mill sands. Sand is pumped from the mill into two mine storage dams where the water is decanted. Each dam has a 544-t (600-st) capacity. Sand is pumped into the mine at a 30 to 40% slurry through 2195 m (7200 ft) of 51-mm (2-in.) thick wall pipe. When called for, sand is reslurried within the dams to a density of 55 to 65% and pumped to the particular mine opening requiring fill. Dry cement is added to the slurry prior to pumping. The capacity of the mine fill system is 20 t/h (22 stph). DEVELOPMENT Vertical development below the main adit level oc¬curs on 61-m (200-ft) intervals from an internal winze. Main haulage drifts or laterals are 2.7 x 2.7 m (9 x 9 ft) in section and driven parallel to the vein structures. Ground conditions generally dictate that better progress can be realized in the footwall than in the hanging wall. A distance of approximately 21 m (70 ft) is maintained between vein and drift openings to accommodate a smooth 18-m (60-ft) radius curve for crosscuts which are driven on 91-m (300-ft) intervals. Approximately 18 m (60 ft) of tail room is driven past the vein inter¬section to accommodate train loading. Ore and waste are hauled using diesel or electric driven locomotives operating over 18-kg (40-Ib) rail [762-mm (30-in.) gage]. Loading ramps are established above each crosscut¬ vein intersection. Scram drifts are then driven in the vein to determine the width and grade of the ore. If a prior decision to mine the block had been reached, then the scram is driven only far enough [about 12 m (40 ft)] to establish a drawpoint and scraper tail room. In most cases, the drawpoint is a 2.1 x 2.1-m (7 x 7-ft) cutout driven about 2.4 m (8 ft) into the footwall. On the level above, a raise bore station is established in the footwall to one side of the crosscut-vein inter¬section. The station is of sufficient size to accommo¬date a Robbins 41R raise boring machine. Support for the station is accomplished with 1.2 and 1.8-m (4 and 6-ft) roof bolts and wire screening. Once completed, a 152-mm (6-in.) concrete slab is poured and the raise drill set in position to center the 1.5-m (5-ft) diam hole approximately 1.8 m (6 ft) from the vein footwall. A 229-mm (9-in.) pilot hole is then drilled to the scram cutout below and reamed back to full diameter (see Fig. 1). STOPING Initial mining in a typical undercut-and-fill stope be¬gins from the top of the borehole. The initial cut can be either immediately beneath the track level or the old scram drift depending upon the particular situation. Cuts vary but are generally 2.4 to 3 m (8 to 10 ft) high. Support is accomplished by square-set timber, overhead caps, or roof bolts and screening depending upon ground conditions. Once the initial cut is removed, underhand timber and screen is installed and cemented sand fill placed. The stope is then ready for undercut mining. Prepara¬tion work begins with sinking 4.5 to 6 m (15 to 20 ft) on the borehole plus cutting a slot to the vein. As sinking progresses, hanging sets are installed to provide man¬way and service facilities. Hanging sets 1.7 m (5 ft 8 in.) long and 1.6 x 2.2 m (5 ft 4 in. x 7 ft 4 in.) in section are installed with steel hangers similar to shaft sets. Framed 203 x 203-mm (8 x 8-in.) timbers are made up in advance and shipped to the stope during sinking operations. When manway and service facilities are completed to the floor of cut to be mined, generally 3.65 to 4.3 m (12 to 14 ft) below the previous sand fill, the ore is removed to the hanging wall plus a round each way along the vein. Levelers or long stringers are then installed over the raise opening to support the work deck, slusher, and grizzly opening. All waste and ore from the sinking process is fed by gravity to the raise (see Fig. 2). Once the stope is equipped, mining pro¬gresses outward in each direction from the grizzly open¬ing. Stope equipment consists of 907 kg (2000 lb) pull air tuggers, timber skips, 11-kW (15-hp) ventilation fans, 15 to 22-kW (20 to 30-hp) electric slushers, 762 to 1270-mm (30 to 50-in.) scrapers, 67-mm (25/a-in. ) jackleg drills, as well as other drilling and blasting supplies. In narrow stopes [generally less than 2 m (7 ft) wide], no support is required for the underhand caps of the previous fill. Where wide sections in the vein occur, segment braces are installed beneath the caps to insure that the sand support cannot slip away from the hanging wall. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) is investigating arsenic removal from dilute waters using a biological precipitation/chemical adsorption system. The method includes (1) inoculating water with ferrous salts to increase hydrogen sulfide generation by indigenous sulfate-reducing bacteria, (2) utilizing the hydrogen sulfide to precipitate the bulk of the arsenic as arsenic sulfide, and (3) using beads containing ferric oxyhydroxide to remove the remaining arsenic. This approach was applied to a contaminated water containing 13 mg/L As. Arsenic extractions up to 99% were achieved. The use of sulfate-reducing bacteria is particularly warranted in this situation since most of the required nutrients are present in the water. Based on successful initial efforts, planning is underway to conduct a pilot-scale test at the site.

A hybrid boundary element-finite element model was formulated to model roof bolt reinforcement of the roof strata with bedding planes. This model was used to analyze the stress distribution around a rectangular opening with variables such as opening width-height ratio, number of bolts installed, number/location of bedding planes, in-situ stresses, etc. The most critical areas are identified and the number and length of roof bolt required are then determined. Two case examples are illustrated.

Cone fitting is a procedure which can be used to estimate the short range, linear portion of a variogram. Rather than combining data over windows In different directions and fitting by hand, cone fitting estimates the variogram in all directions at once using a multiple regression approach. The method automatically provides estimates of nugget effect, anisotropy, and initial slope of the variogram. This paper presents the results of simulation studies which have been carried out. These studies Indicate that the method works well and that it may be particularly useful for small data sets. The simulation studies also indicate that the local variogram may differ greatly from the theoretical variogram.

As part of a program to address long-term needs for ensuring adequate supplies of domestic phosphate raw materials, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has conducted considerable research on dolomitic phosphate rock beneficiation. The discovery that alkyl diphosphonic acids act as phosphate mineral depressants led to the development of several processes involving a carbonate flotation step for the effective beneficiation of these problem ores. Most recently, a partial de-oiling process in which the reagent consumption is greatly reduced has been developed. The reduction is achieved because part of the initial feed is beneficiated without passing through the separate carbonate flotation step. Using this method, a phosphate product containing 30.6-30.9% P2O5 and 0.7-0.8% MgO was obtained from a Florida dolomitic phosphate pebble which contained about 23% P2O5 and 2.0% MgO. The P2O5 recovery was 80.8-86.5%.

In July 1985, as the U.S. copper industry contracted and the Mexican industry expanded, a trans border pollution agreement was signed which included smelter air pollution control in the "Gray Triangle": Cananea, Nacozari and Douglas. Since then the Douglas smelter has been closed, a year earlier than initially required; though its new smelter is operating, S02 collection and acid disposal at Nacozari is yet to come; and the Cananea smelter has been un-touched. Nacozari and Cananea copper mining have expanded while a reduced U.S. copper industry has rationalized to a point of fragile profitability. As a paradigm of U.S. copper competitiveness, this paper attempts to explain the differential fortunes of copper in the two countries, to project the future of the smelter agreement as a function of acid disposal, and to consider the consequences of the politicized application of smelter pollution control in Arizona.

The fine coal fraction of a coal stream is that fraction which contains particles essentially in the -28 mesh size range. This fraction will normally first appear, in a coal preparation process, as a result of classification to segregate raw coal into various size components for beneficiation. More specifically, it could appear in desliming screen underfiow, classifying cyclone overflow, and in other process circuit components. It's recognized that the top size of this fraction has been determined more by secondary reasons, such as desliming screen area for the heavy medium cyclone circuit, the dewatering equipment for the fine clean coal, or even the stability of the refuse thickener circuit. Benefits, both economic and environmental, gained by beneficiating the fine coal fraction of a raw coal stream are increasing in number, until today, fine coal beneficiation is a necessity in most coal operations requiring any degree of preparation. This is due to some of the following reasons: • In the past it was frequently more economical to discard -28 mesh raw coal sizes than to recover the coal values from them. Today, mining costs have escalated to the point where all coal values leaving the mine should report to the finished product if possible. • Today's mining methods are producing run-of-mine coals containing higher percentages of -28 mesh sizes. This heavily weighs the economic balance in favor of beneficiating this fraction. As much as 25% of the run-of-mine coal from some mines is in the fine coal fraction. Beneficiation is recommended so that clean coal contained in the fraction can be recovered to reduce the loss of coal values. • Existing and pending environmental regulations mandate that solid fuels now consumed in power station boilers contain almost no pyritic sulfur. This form of sulfur appears in raw coal in the fine coal fraction, but can be removed by coal beneficiation. Environmental considerations dictate that every year, more of the fine coal produced for steam generating purposes in the US be beneficiated. To deliberately discard any portion of the fine coal can only add to this cost, not only in the sense that fewer tons will be recovered but, more importantly, additional tonnage will be diverted to the most capital- and labor-intensive section of the entire preparation plant-the fine refuse dewatering section. It is apparent to preparation engineers that dewatering and ultimate disposal of the fine refuse derived from this beneficiation step is certainly the most difficult technical problem presented in the entire plant design. Therefore, any beneficiation procedure which increases the fine coal recovery, or in any manner decreases the tonnage of fine refuse to be dewatered, is going to be cost effective. Since the -28 mesh fraction contains both coal and refuse particles in their finest particle sizes and thus presents the greatest degree of liberation, one would immediately infer that the highest degree of beneficiation would be achieved. INTRODUCTION Interest in the recovery of methane from coalbeds has increased rapidly over recent years, because of its potential as an energy resource and to alleviate pollution and safety problems. The resource base of coalbed methane in the United States has been estimated at 11.2 Gm3, roughly equivalent to 20 years consumption (Mroz et al., 1983; Kuuskraa and Brandenburg, 1989). Methane contributes to the adverse environmental impacts of global warming, tropospheric ozone formation (smog), and potentially stratospheric ozone destruction. Association of methane with coal has always presented a safety problem in mines due to the potential for explosions. The rate of release of methane depends on the amount adsorbed by the coal, the adsorption isotherm for the coal, and the size of the coal particles. Mining operations can affect the particle size distribution and the production of fines and therefore the rate of release. The time the mined coal remains in the mine may also be important in determining total emissions. The methane content of some Utah coals was determined in this study. The methane content of the coals is compared with the chemical and physical properties of the coals and the properties of the seam and neighboring strata. Correlations are developed to better understand the formation and retention of methane by these coal seams. METHANE FORMATION IN COALBEDS Three mechanisms for methane formation may be considered: (1) nonbiogenic formation, (2) formation by anaerobic bacteria during plant material deposition and the early stages of diagenesis, and (3) formation from pyrolysis of coal material during coal maturation. Nonbiogenic formation by thermal processes involving carbon- and hydrogen-containing compounds has been proposed as a mechanism for methane formation in the earth. It is not likely to be of importance where other fossil fuel materials are present. Coal would not survive the temperatures required and hence the methane would need to migrate and be trapped by the coal seam. This mechanism is unlikely for coalbed methane. Formation of methane by anaerobic bacteria undoubtedly occurs during coalification, but the methane may not be trapped until the pore system of the coal is developed, and would likely be displaced by methane formed during further coalification. Methane formed by maturation of the coal material as it progresses from peat to coals of various rank is the most probable mechanism for the formation of coalbed methane. Most of the methane is adsorbed onto the walls of microvoids in coal. It has been estimated that the surface area of one kilogram of coal is between 20,000 m2 to 200,000 m2. Surface area measurements depend on the coal and also on the method of measurement. At 20 atmospheres, in some coals, the adsorbed methane is 10 times greater than methane as a free gas. At 100 atmospheres the adsorbed gas can be as densely packed as a liquid. The volume of methane gas held in coal depends on the volume of gas that exists as a free gas and the adsorbed gas capacity. The volume of free gas in the coal can be calculated from the kinetic theory of gases (methane can be assumed to be an ideal gas because errors would not be greater than 1 % for normal mining pressures). Langmuir (1916) derived an equation for the adsorption of gases on uniform surfaces and this is applied to the adsorption of methane on coal:

The dissolution of metals from various metal/ non-metal mine tailings has been studied through column leach tests at US Bureau of Mines laboratories. Metal mobilization in unsaturated columns was consistently greater than metal dissolution in water-saturated columns. Leachate pH was also frequently lower when a leachant was passed through columns but showed a mixed residence-time dependence. On the other hand, metal and sulfate ion concentrations in the leachate increased with dry-cycle residence time. Results suggest that acid formation through atmospheric oxidation of pyrite may compete with non-acid-forming oxidation of other metal sulfides. The two processes lead to decreased pH and increased metal mobilization, respectively. Leach tests using sodium lauryl sulfate indicated that microbial activity was not a factor in these studies.

The hydrodynamics of the leaching solution in leach heaps is known to be one of the important variables in the performance of the heap. The solution hydrodynamics are also important in the decommissioning of a heap where the aim is to flush out the residual dissolved metals and the remaining reagents. Chemical engineers have studied the hydrodynamics of "trickle bed" reactors for 40 years in an attempt to relate the performance of trickle bed reactors to flow conditions. Their work is reviewed with emphases on areas of similarity to heap leaching.

Two types of underground tests on three types of shield supports, 2-leg, 4-leg, and chock shield, were con- ducted to measure the horizontal movement of the canopy against the immediate roof. In no friction tests, steel rollers were placed between roof and canopy top, while in friction tests normal direct contact was used. Results indicate that the canopy for 2-leg shields always moves forward during setting, whereas there was no forward movement for 4-leg or chock shields. Based on the test results, a model for active horizontal force was proposed.
