An investigation of a hydrometallurgical method for the recovery of tellurium dioxide from cadmium telluride (CdTe) thin-film manufacturing scrap was conducted. Sulfuric acid/ hydrogen peroxide lixiviation was employed to selectively leach cadmium and oxidize tellurium to tellurium dioxide (TeO2). Experimental variables included solution pH, pulp density, oxidant (H2O2) concentration, temperature, agitation rate and residence time. After one hour of lixiviation, no noticeable increase in grade or recovery occurred; thus, all experiments were performed for one hour. Leaching results showed it was possible to recover at least 74% of the tellurium, while producing a 98% pure TeO2 product. Additionally, an apparent activation energy value of 12.1 kJ/mole (2.9 kcal/mole) was determined. This value, along with results from agitation rate experiments, indicated the reaction was primarily controlled by diffusion through the product layer. During lixiviation, partial dissolution of tellurium proved inevitable. Thus, a second step: ammoniacal precipitation was introduced to recover the aqueous tellurium as a precipitate. A statistical experimental design (DOE) was used to identify the significant effects from the residual effects. Experimental variables included precipitation pH, temperature, initial tellurium tenor and agitation rate. Precipitation results showed that it was possible to produce a low-grade (46% Te) precipitate, while recovering 98% of the aqueous tellurium species. The precipitation pH and temperature (°C) were determined as the significant effects for both the grade and recovery of tellurium. Agitation rate and initial tellurium tenor were determined as the residual effects and did not influence the grade or recovery of tellurium. An illustration of tellurium recovery, as a function of the significant effects, is illustrated in Fig. 1.

Property sales and acquisition are prominent features of today's coal industry. Before selling or buying a site, a company must know the property's economic net worth. Any evaluation of economic net worth would be inadequate if determinations of a property's environmental liabilities and costs were omitted. Short-and long-term costs can result from liabilities related to reclamation, water treatment, subsidence, and hazardous waste disposal. A structured, interdisciplinary approach can aid in the delineation, summation, and scheduling of these costs and liabilities.

A single bubble released into surfactant solution first accelerates, reaching a maximum velocity then decelerates to reach a terminal velocity. Modeling this "velocity profile" is fundamental to understanding the motion of bubbles in flotation systems. This contribution considers the terminal velocity. Modeling is by a combination of the Navier-Stokes equation for flow around the bubble and the Marangoni effect induced by surfactant on the bubble surface. Numerical simulation is shown to agree with experiment for bubbles in pure water and surfactant solutions.

The sustainable management of solid wastes, including the wastes emanating from portable batteries, consists one of the main objectives of the current EU Environment Framework Programme. Overall reduction in the quantity and volume of disposed wastes, elimination of dangerous species within the waste streams and wastes recycling comprise specific targets of this policy. Within this framework a Greek funded research project entitled ?Development of an Integrated Alternative System for the Environmentally compatible Management of Used Batteries and Accumulators - DIASBAT?, was recently completed by a research team consisting of major Greek Battery producers and retailers, Research Organisations, Universities and Environmental Consultants. The aim of the project was the development of an Efficient Alternative Management System for spent portable Batteries and Accumulators, (B&A), in compliance with the prevailing EU and national environmental legislation, taking advantage of the state-of the art technology. The present article summarises the research carried out within the DIASBAT project in order to review and develop a set of sustainability indicators for the assessment of the effectiveness of Spent Portable Batteries Management Systems (SPBMS). Based on the European experience and practice, various indicators were initially examined regarding the performance evaluation of SPBMS. Specifically, the indicators used in European studies conducted to assess the environmental, social and economic impacts of the recently issued Batteries Directive 2006/66/EC, as well as the indicators used by European Collection and Recycling Organisations (CROs) to assess the performance of SBPMS across Europe were presented and analyzed. Additionally, the set of indicators used within DIASBAT to assess the effectiveness of alternative Spent Portable Batteries Collection Schemes developed within the project, are presented. The experimental collection networks of the DIASBAT project included schools, selected retail stores and a pilot network set up by the Greek Institute of Geology and Mineral Exploration (IGME). From the evaluation of the various indicators, it was deduced that in order to assess an Integrated Spent Portable Batteries Alternative Management System, a multi criteria analysis approach is required. Within the general principles of sustainable development, there is a need for different qualitative and quantitative indicators to be combined, taking into consideration critical parameters such as: annual portable batteries collection rates, compliance with the targets set up by the prevailing European and national legislation, economic performance of the System - and finally social criteria - environmental sensitization according to age, gender, economic prosperity, educational level etc.

The large jointed chalk reservoir situated at 3 km depth in the North sea's Ekofisk field is undergoing major compaction after nearly 15 year of oil and gas production. Approximately 150 km 3 of the overlying sediments, mostly shales, are involved in the subsidence. A maximum central subsidence of nearly 3 meters, and a maximum present rate of 45 cm per year has set in motion numerous studies of the phenomenon. Non-linear finite element (FEM) and non- linear distict element (DEM) analyses of the compaction and large scale subsidence were performed. Consistent differences between the continuum and discontinuum analyses were noted. In the latter, slip on hypothetical bedding planes and sub- vertical or vertical faults was allowed, which possibly gives a more realistic simulation of the real processes of subsidence in such a large body of rock. Laboratory studies of the reservoir joints included roughness measurement, JRC and JCS characterization, direct shear tests while saturated in heated Ekofisk oil, and coupled closure-shear-flow tests with heated oil followed by heated sea water. Discontinuum modelling using Cundall's UDEC was performed on representative jointed assemblies (two sets of steeply dipping conjugate joints) to investigate the effect of a major reduction of pore pressure within the deformable matrix and along each joint. It was found that the large shrinkage deformation of the matrix allowed joint shearing to occur despite the constraint of uniaxial strain. Relative mass bulking due to small but widely distributed joint shear possibly explains the observed maintenance of excellent productivity despite large vertical strains in the reservoir.

Gold with minor associated copper mineralization in the area of what is now the Bougainville porphyry copper deposit has been known since the 1920s and was probably known in German colonial times, pre- 19 14, although no records persist other than a reference by Stanley (1922) to copper specimens from Kieta that he saw in Rabaul. Stanley did not at the time believe that they came from Kieta. Gold was first discovered at Kupei by Jack Comb in 1929 and the Kieta Goldfield was proclaimed in May 1930. In December 1932, the Tapu Reward Claim at Moroni - the site of the Bougainville Copper concentrator, was pegged by C.W.M. Evans who prospected up river from the West Coast. The Pumkuna (Panguna) Reward Claim on the site of the subsequent porphyry copper deposit was granted in February 1934 to G.A. Myers. n May 193 1, the Kupei Reward Claim was transferred to Bou- gainville Gold Options NL and later reverted to Jack Comb and then the Bougainville Syndicate, as did the Pumkuna and Moroni claims. Most of the interested parties had come from the Edie Creek rush on the New Guinea mainland. In 1935, N.H. Fisher, the geologist in Rabaul for the New Guinea administration who later became director of the Australian Bureau of Mineral Resources in Canberra, reported on the three gold areas. Norm Fisher described the gold and copper mineralization and its habit in great detail and this report had a major influence on the events leading to the discovery in the 1960s. Gold production up to the Japanese invasion probably did not exceed $50,000 in value. Half a ton of copper-gold ore from Kupei was sent to O.T. Lempriere's in Sydney for assay in the early 1930s.

The first high pressure grinding roll in a copper mine was commissioned at Cyprus Sierrita in July 1995. This grinding roll is the world's biggest operating unit. It has a roll diameter of 2.4 meters and a face width of 1.4 meters. It is driven by two, 2250 KW (3,000 HP) motors. This paper will discuss the development of the grinding roll at Cyprus Sierrita and what it has done for comminution of Sierrita ore. Maintenance and operating performance will be discussed as well as testwork including size reduction, power input, work index, and throughput.

New powerplants, tunnels and dams are currently under construction at Meraaker to triple the annual power production of a nearly 100 year old power scheme. A total of 44 km tunnels with cross sections varying from 7 m2 to 32 m2 have been excavated in hard rock formations. Ten kilometers were excavated by a High Performance Tunnel Boring Machine (HP TBM). The remaining tunnels have been completed by the drill and blast method, using modem proven equipment and procedures. This paper gives special attention to the TBM drive and equipment selection, including, planning, site organization and performance.

Recently, a Maryland bank became the overnight owner of a toxic waste site through a foreclosure. The original property owners had operated a crash and garbage business on the site and obtained loans for their business venture through the bank. In 1980, their son purchased the property from his parents with mortgage monies obtained from the bank. Failing to make his loan payments, the son defaulted on the mortgage. The bank foreclosed on the property and eventually purchased the property at a foreclosure sale. Shortly after the bank's purchase of the site, toxic wastes were found on the property--the result of disposing solid wastes on the site for 10 years. The bank declined responsibility for contaminating the site and consequently for its cleanup. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) took corrective actions to clean up the site. EPA then handed the bill to the bank, citing the Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) of 1980 (more commonly known as "Superfund"). CERCLA imposes liability on the current owners and operators of hazardous waste sites.

Working places in underground mines are formed by digging. The main feature of underground working places is that they are surrounded by rock. Digging through rock, which is main operation of mining, generates great reacting force. In many cases, supports are required to maintain a roof. Working places change their location with progress of mining operation. Therefore, for automate the work in such environment, a locomotive mechanism which can endure great reacting force, can support effectively the roof and floor, and has high moving performance in rough environment, might be required. In narrow underground environment which is surrounded by rock, it is possible to generate great fixing force by means of a jack which is set between the roof and floor or both side wall it is usual to apply a jack as anchor post for fixing machinery or reacting force. Self advancing supports widely used in long wall faces in coal mines could be said an example of locomotive mechanism with propping up fixing method. However it is difficult to say that ordinary self advancing supports have enough adaptability for various condition of the roof and floor. New locomotive method for underground working place 'Swing Phase Locomotion' is proposed. It is achieved by mechanism based on frame type support and synchronous control of jacks. Furthermore, to achieved high adaptability to various conditions of the roof and floor, another walking mechanism has been developed. The mechanism employs propping up jack as its legs.

Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc. has embarked on a continuous improvement effort to ensure that Barrick Gold Corporation will retain its lead in the gold industry in years to come. The continuous improvement initiative is based on careful mapping of the key levers associated with each activity of business. The individual levers are then evaluated to determine their potential to affect the profitability and safety of the operation. The most promising are diagnosed for root causes. These root causes are then addressed to enhance benefits. Through a structured approach of mapping, brainstorming, evaluating and instigating change with follow up measurement and reporting; Barrick Goldstrike is anticipating an increase in throughput at the autoclave facility of 10% with little or no capital expenditure. The resultant approach to Continuous Improvement will be utilized throughout the Goldstrike facility and then throughout Barrick's world-wide operations.

This paper outlines the results of a study of the opinions of practicing engineers concerning the value of environmental engineering courses in a mining engineering curriculum. One hundred engineers with significant experience in mining-related engineering work were carefully chosen. Of the 67 responses, about half were from mining engineers, and the other half were from environmental engineers. In this paper, the results of the survey are outlined. The number and type of courses recommended by the respondents are summarized as well as the specific topics recommended for inclusion in a mining engineering curriculum. The survey form also asked for the stages in the mine life when environmental experts were needed and the percentage of environmental engineering performed by outside experts for many mining-related environmental tasks. The results of this line of questions are provided. Finally, the paper offers a comparison of the results for environmental engineers and mining engineers and analyzes the differences.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a graphics-based computer model to assess operator visibility for continuous miners, shuttle cars, and scoops. Using digitized drawings of the machine, the program can analyze visibility for both 5th percentile female and 95th percentile male operators. This model was used to predict 95th percentile male operator visibility for two shuttle car designs. These results were then compared to those obtained from a manual assessment of visibility using the actual shuttle cars. The methods showed good correlation except for several cases which were attributed to imprecise digitization of the machines.

Sustainable development is defined as ‘development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.’1 There has been considerable debate of late between environmentalists and mining operators concerning the current regulation and operation of mountaintop mining. To those not familiar with the practice, it essentially applies an area mining method to a mountaintop, removing all overburden above coal seams, resulting in full recovery of the resource with the excess or swell spoil material - (rock and dirt) being deposited in engineered fills in hollows to the side (known as hollow fills or valley fills - very similar to highway fills). Because most of the dialogue has been adversarial and mining’s response is perceived to be primarily reactive instead of proactive, a rift in communication and value systems between the two sides has widened. Since 1999, the global mining community has been concerned that there is a disconnect between mining practices and the values of today’s society.3 Working through the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) was created to review mining practices in a project entitled Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development (MMSD) driven by the following four goals:

The World Bank is not only a development bank, but also a ?knowledge bank?. One of our key functions is the dissemination of usable information and knowledge. We are here not only to share our experience but to learn from your experience as well ? two reasons that fit clearly with the mandate of the World Bank Group.

The formation of petroleum is normally thought of as a geologically lengthy process, involving the accumulation of organic matter, its gradual burial, diagenetic breakdown via geochemical reactions, maturation, heating within a 75-150'C "oil window" induced by normal geothermal gradients in the subsiding basin, and slow product migration into structural traps (Tissot and Welte, 1984, Hunt, 1979). The entire process can take millions of years and, indeed, most oil reservoirs probably formed in this manner. How-ever, today in sedimented, submarine rift basins (Fig. 1), Cl to >C40 hydrocarbons with the chemical and physical properties of crude oil are forming in demonstrably much shorter time by rapid thermal maturation of immature organic matter in hydrothermal regimes that are unusually high for sedimentary basins (Brault and Simoneit, 1988a, b; Didyk and Simoneit, 1988; Kawka and Simoneit, 1987; Peter et al., 1988; Simoneit, 1983; 1984; 1985a,b; 1988; Simoneit et al., 1984; 1987; 1988).

The Department of Thoracic Surgery and Pathology at the Toronto General Hospital have had a long standing interest in the early detection and treatment of carcinoma of the lung. Our initial experience was with a population at risk due to a prolonged period of cigarette smoking. More recently our efforts have turned to industrial exposure, specifically in the nickel and uranium industries. [Initial Screening Project] (1) For a three year period 1963 to 1966 a cytology screening program was carried out through the Out-Patient Department. The study was limited to cigarette smokers over 40 in age. A total of 1586 patients were examined. Of the sputa collected, the classification is seen in Table 1. There were 11 malignant sputa present. Added to this number were 25 patients with symptoms, normal chest X-rays, but malignant cells on cytology, and a further 5 patients in whom an abnormality (eventually proven non-malignant) showed on X-ray, and sputum showed malignancy which was radio logically occult. (Table II). This gave a total of 41 patients with malignant sputum who were evaluated between 1960 and 1966. The clinical course of these patients is seen in Table III. Only 19 of 41 patients had localization and treatment of their tumour during that study period and this low rate of localization attests to the technical difficulties endoscopy in that day presented. The method of localization was as follows: a) 6 patients showed an area of segmental pneumonitis somewhere in this time period b) Using the rigid bronchoscope localized the tumour in 9. This was proven by direct biopsy, and frequently required more than one bronchoscopy over a prolonged time period. c) bronchograms and tomograms showed abnormalities in 5 patients. Of these 19 patients, 5 were treated by radiotherapy because of general condition or refusal of surgery. Three of the irradiated patients died of recurrent cancer within three years. The other two died within one year of unrelated disease. Fourteen patients underwent resection, with one operative mortality. At pathology, the tumours were "in situ" in 6 and invasive in 13. There was no evidence of nodal spread. When last followed up in 1979, there were no cases of recurrent tumour and no cases of second lung primary tumours. Similar experiences have been reported from the Mayo Clinic (2), Johns Hopkins (3) and Memorial Hospitals (4). Early detection of radiologically occult tumours which are in situ or minimally invasive has given uniformly good results. There have been no deaths from recurrent or metastatic cancer in surgically resected patients, and only one second primary tumour has been detected. Interestingly, the Hopkins group reports that 5 patients with Stage I squamous cell tumours refused operation. One refused any treatment and died of disease at 12 months. Three were radiated, and were alive from 14-38 months post-treatment, all with evidence of recurrent disease. [Sudbury Sintering Plant Study](5) From 1948 to 1963 an open travelling-grate sintering process was employed to convert nickel sulfide to nickel oxide at an International Nickel Company operation. The environment in this plant was particularly dusty and filled with fumes. It became apparent by 1969 that the incidence of bronchogenic carcinoma was markedly increased in workers from this plant. A concerted effort was made to track down all workmen with this exposure. During 1973 and 1974, 268 men were studied. Chest radiographs were done and showed no mass lesions. Sputum was collected on three consecutive days and analyzed. There were 12 men with malignant sputum, all of the squamous cell variety. Two refused any investigation, one presenting 31/2 years later with extensive hronchogenic carcinoma, and the other 5 years later with extensive carcinoma of the maxillary sinus. In the remaining ten patients careful rhinolaryngeal examination as well as a detailed bronchoscopy, involving examination, brushings and biopsy of all pulmonary segments was carried out. One patient was found to have laryngeal carcinoma and was treated by radiation. In nine patients, the malignancy was localized to the lung, leading to six lobectomies, two pneumonectomies and one sleeve lobectomy at operation. However, the follow-up in these cases suggests a different biological behaviour with these industrially related tumours. While no tumour has recurred locally, one patient has died of metastatic cancer and two patients have developed second and one patient a third pulmonary primary cancer. However, survival has still been much better than wits radiographically manifest lung cancer. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has initiated a study of a roof bolter to reduce noise exposure to mine roof bolter operators. An important segment of this research entails determining the affect of various drilling configurations on the performance (penetration rate) and sound power emissions when drilling into granite. Test conditions included various combinations of rotational speeds and thrusts; hex and round drill steels of one inch (1.) and one and three-eighths inch (1 3/8.) diameters; vacuum and wet conditions; and using drill media of differing compressive strengths. This paper will detail the affects of each of these on the performance and sound power level emission. When drilling into granite, it was found that wet drilling generated lower sound power levels and performed better than vacuum drilling.

The growing environmental awareness and the need for providing social service to the community, urge the primary sector companies (such as mining) to find new solutions, by adjusting their operations with the special, local conditions and meeting everyday problems in practical ways. We hereby present a real case of re-design of an open pit, closed-bench type industrial minerals (clay) excavation, for the purpose of rehabilitation and utilisation as a water reservoir. The potential use of rainfall water was studied on the basis of covering the irrigation needs and improving the living standard of the neighbouring farmers and also as a project or recreational development of the area by shaping a wetland. The experience from the project progress and the reservoir use has been positive to date and the reclamation plan seems to have the acceptance of the local community.
