Based on current sedimentation theory an on-line thickener model was developed and coupled with an extended Kalman Filter to obtain additional information such as the compression zone level and concentration, a corrected underflow concentration, the inventory, and some rheological information. The on-line model was installed and tested for robustness for periods up to three days in an industrial environment giving good results. Emphasis was given to signal processing and selecting the appropriate input variables for filtering. The analysis of the thickener from a phenomenlogical point of view provides for better operation, establishes the limiting operating conditions, and assists in the design of control strategies.

An important part of doing business today in the mining industry, especially overseas, involves community assistance programs for the people who live around the mining areas. The purpose of such a program is to build mutual cooperation and respect that will allow the company and its neighbors to live and work in peace. To do this, it is necessary to form associations or foundations and work in a joint venture fashion. The authors discuss in some detail the outline for setting up such programs and the important role that women, in particular, can play in them.

Metal removal kinetics and metal ion selectivity in ion flotation were studied from a thermodynamic perspective. Surface tension data could be used with the Gibbs adsorption equation to quantitatively predict the metal-ion removal kinetics in alkylsulfate-Cu systems. However, surface tensions predicted cation selectivity coefficients in the sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS)-Cu-Ca and SDS-Cu-Pb systems rather poorly, although the predicted order of the selectivity (Cu2+ < Ca2+ < Pb2+) was correct. Another thermodynamic selectivity model, which used the Grahame adsorption equation and a geometrical analysis, predicted cation selectivity coefficients that agreed very well with experimentally measured values.

Blind drilled shafts are becoming increasingly popular as a secondary and sometimes primary means of ventilation. This is particularly true in the Appalachian coalfields. Some reasons for the rebirth of blind shafts are economics, timeliness, safety characteristics and their inherent independence from underground operations. Blind drilling has had limited use in hard rock and tunneling ventilation. Advances in cutters, bit design, equipment and lining systems have made blind drilled shafts the shaft construction technique of choice for ventilation specialists. History of blind drilling Blind drilling&apos;s roots include the Nevada test site, the coalfields of Appalachia and Germany, and the uranium mines of Arizona. Early technology was developed using a variety of equipment mainly of oilfield origin. Shafts completed by oilfield equipment ranged from the shallow 1.5 and 1.8 m (5 and 6 ft) lined shafts on the Nevada test site to two 3 m (10 ft) lined, 222 m (730 ft) deep shafts in Alberta for heavy oil development. Several of these shafts were completed to extraordinary depths. The record, completed in 1969, is a 2.28-m-diam (90-in.-diam), 1875-m (6150-ft) deep shaft, located in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska.

Most prediction methods used to calculate mining-induced subsidence rely on empirical formulations, which typically assume flat topography and uniform properties in the overburden. It is also well known that when a longwall panel mines below a valley bottom surface ground deformation magnitudes and orientations may be significantly influenced by the presence of the valley. This paper discusses ground deformation data collected at different surface locations above the Buchanan mine in the eastern United States. Measurements at individual surface points and strata movement measurements using a three-point extensometer have been collected as the area was undermined. Measurements correspond to the mining of the panel immediately under the measurement points and to the mining of adjacent panels. Measurement locations correspond to valley bottom locations. The measurements are critically evaluated and compared with respect to topography and panel face location. The issue of the fluctuation of GPS measurements is also discussed.

Transportation of sodium cyanide from factory to minesite often attracts adverse comment from both the community and government agencies. In Western Australia the transportation of 30% w/w aqueous sodium cyanide solution raised fears in the community concerning the safety of such material in the event of spillage. The Chemistry Centre of Western Australia initiated a study of the effects of such a spill, to determine appropriate short and long term response strategies. Factors which were considered included the rate of hydrogen cyanide gas release under various climatic and soil conditions and the effect of alternative treatments in reducing such emissions. The data collected have been used to plan emergency response procedures.

A brief overview of industrial mineral exploration and exploitation in Chile is given. World class deposits of salt, lithium, nitrate, and iodine are present in northern Chile. The potential for further exploration and exploitation of these deposits, as well as the substantial reserves of other mineral commodities such as gypsum, anhydrite, volcanic rocks, and borates are discussed. In conclusion, industrial minerals mining in Chile has considerable potential, particularly as joint ventures between foreign and domestic companies. This has been demonstrated in the extraction of nitrates, lithium, iodine, and diatomites. However, as outlined in this paper, a number of factors need to be overcome before the true potential of the Chilean industrial minerals industry can be realized.

Mining is a business and, therefore, is expected to make profit for its investors, like any other business. It is a risky business which requires the expertise of professionals from several disciplines to make it successful in the finding, evaluation and development of a new mining venture. Many of the same disciplines, as well as experts in some other fields are required to operate the facilities once they are built. To manage all this, wide-ranging, versatile and sharp managerial skills are required. On the U.S. domestic front, the most important management issues requiring attention today and tomorrow are the increasing unwarranted attacks by anti-mining groups and legislators on the industry and aided by an unchallenged, but widespread, public view that mining is not necessary and damages the environment. Higher costs to mine and process deeper and more refractory ores are also of great concern. More and more attention is being focused, therefore, on overseas projects under the belief that undeveloped countries will recognize the economic value of mineral production and that lower costs can be achieved.

The author has known Professor Wadsworth since the 1960s, when interest in the application of microbial technology for metallurgical processes was beginning its rapid rise. The development of bioleaching and mineral biooxidation was advanced, in part, by Wadsworth&apos;s belief in the potential for its application, as well as by his numerous contributions to the understanding of the fundamentals of hydro-metallurgy. Wadsworth is recognized for fostering research and development of the field and adding credibility to microbiological-based metallurgical processes, now often referred to as biohydrometallurgy. This Wadsworth Award is recognition of the field of biohy-drometallurgy. It is an honor to serve as a representative for all those individuals involved in research and commercial development of this technology. Modern commercial application of biohydromctallurgy began with the bioleaching of copper from submarginal-grade. run-of-mine material. Kennecott Copper successfully developed this process in the 1950s at the Bingham Canyon Mine in Utah. Other mining operations around the world followed Kennecott&apos;s lead. Today, dump bioleaching remains a very low-cost process for scavenging copper from rock that cannot be economically processed by any other method. Despite the commercial success of dump bioleaching, little effort has been made to enhance the micro Biological component of this leach process. Expansion of biohydro metallurgy into recovery of other metals did not occur until the mid-1980s, when the first commercial plant for the pretreatment of refractory gold-bearing concentrate was commissioned at the Fairview operation in south Africa. Now, processes for copper bioleaching and refractory gold pretreatment are engineered specifically to promote the activity of the microorganisms. This paper reviews the current state of commercial applications of biohydrometallurgy. It examines potential future developments and portrays the role of the microbiologist in facilitating continued growth and commercial acceptance of the technology. The commercia1 examples in this paper illustrate the expansion of microbial processing in the mining industry during the last 20 years. A number of solution methods for solving the nonlinear equations derived from mine ventilation networks use meshes selected from the network as the basis of the solution techniques. Mathematicians working in network theory have outlined several methods for speeding up the computations through mesh selection and ordering procedures. In the mine ventilation area, a fair amount of attention has been paid by ventilation specialists to procedures for choosing the meshes so that the computational effort is eased. However, little attention has been paid to mesh ordering methods. This paper outlines research into random mesh ordering procedures plus two non-random mesh ordering procedures and compares some results using these procedures within four solution algorithms.

We have developed a layer-by-layer deposition technique for preparation of nanocomposite particles. Using this process, it was possible to make nanocomposites of various oxides with desired local composition and microstructure. The attachment of the shell particles to core particles was achieved using controlled polymer adsorption. Removal of excess polymer was accomplished without detaching the pre-adsorbed polymers by a specific stepwise washing scheme. The inherent chemistry of the process makes it easy to incorporate functional fillers over core particles. The nanosized filler materials will replace the shell particles in the present process and the polymer bridge would be chosen by taking into consideration the respective surface chemistries of various shell and core particles.

I. INTRODUCTION The Atlanta Research Chamber is an UMTA-sponsored applied research facility studying tunnel design, excavation and support systems. It is located directly below Peachtree Street in downtown Atlanta, Georgia. It is included in the CN-120 contract to build the Peachtree Center subway station, a part of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) multi-billion dollar "Phase A" 53-mile transit project, which is 80 percent funded by UMTA with 20 percent provided by local authorities in Atlanta and Fulton and DeKalb counties (Figure 1). The Research Chamber is located immediately south of the main Peachtree Center Station cavern, and is in part an enlargement of the pre-existing Pilot Tunnel excavated to provide bidders on the CN-120 contract a view of the rock conditions (Figure 2). The Research Chamber lies some 3 meters above, and is approximately parallel to, the twin Running Tunnels. The Research Chamber is 18 meters long and has the same 5.5 meter diameter horseshoe shape design dimensions as the twin Running Tunnels.

It is not possible to accurately predict water flow into rock tunnels during construction, because all of the relevant factors cannot be accurately determined ahead of time. But an estimate is needed, because water inflow can be a major problem during construction, hence also a major concern for project design. There currently is no simple, generally accepted method of estimating inflow. This paper describes a semi-empirical method for estimating possible water inflow based on borehole water pressure test results, using correlations from previous tunnel experience. The method provides an estimate of percentages of tunnel length which will experience different intensities of long term steady state inflow, and provides an estimate of possible initial heading inflow. The method is applicable for distributed sources of water inflow due to rock mass features such as systems of joints and bedding planes, and accounts for different boundary conditions of water head and recharge. The metric system flow units used in this paper are liters per minute (L/min) and liters/minute/meter of tunnel (L/min/m), to be compatible with rock mass classification systems commonly used today.

Explosives research and development has historically been motivated by coal mining. Whether to solve safety problems or to improve productivity and cost, the result has been the same: better explosives products and initiation systems. Today, this process continues at an accelerated pace due to the tools presently available to the explosives and mining industries. Background Explosives have been used in coal mining since the industry&apos;s earliest days. Black powder, introduced into metal mining in 1627, undoubtedly was introduced into coal as soon as a need to replace pick work was apparent. Until the invention of the safety fuse by William Bickford in 1832, the only initiation methods available were the straw, quill and miner&apos;s squib. Disastrous explosions underground in England brought about studies on their possible causes (Atkinson, 1886). The studies showed that, while explosives contributed to the accidents, the real villain was coal dust, since that was the agent that transmitted the disaster throughout the mine workings. To improve underground safety, research was applied in an attempt to make explosives that could be safely fired in a methane air atmosphere. The Prussian government was apparently the first to establish a testing station for coal mine explosives. This occurred in 1885 (Guttmann, 1909).

In the early 1960&apos;s the feasibility of mathematical modeling was demonstrated in Northern Rhodesia and southwestern United States, where techniques were developed to use these models in a new approach to aid engineers in the estimation of ore reserves, mine designs, and financial evaluations. These rudimentary models closely followed the manual methods, producing ore reserves and production schedule estimates that were as accurate as the manual methods, yet were many times faster. Mines evaluated and designed using these new tools gradually came into operation during the 1970&apos;s and entered the phase at which production scheduling and ore-grade control became day-to-day problems. Management expected the number of operational engineers to be small because small planning engineering staffs had produced the original designs and operated the smaller high-grade pits. Unfortunately, the tools needed by the mine engineer to perform short-term production scheduling and ore-grade control were labor intensive; they had not yet been generally computerized. Several attempts to use the original or exploration model for these two functions were futile. While an exploration model based on data from exploration work proved sufficiently precise for overall mine design and long-term production scheduling, the model lacked the precision required for short-term scheduling and grade control.

Noted as one of the 20 major economies of the world, Turkey is a semi-arid plateau between the Eurasian and the African continents. With its surface area of 780 thousand sq km, it supports a population of 70 million people. While the mining history of Turkey can be traced back as far as 7 000 B.C., mining currently generates only 2% of Turkey’s gross national product. Turkey has 77 of the 90 principal minerals that are mined world-wide. Currently, some 5 000 mine occurrences including copper, lead, zinc, iron, gold-silver, chromite, sepiolite, mercury, and coal deposits, soda ash, marble, zeolite, feldspar, magnesite deposits, as well as the world’s largest known borate deposits, have been discovered and partially explored.

The underground portion of Duke Power Company&apos;s Bad Creek Pumped Storage Project in northwestern South Carolina consists of a powerhouse cavern (132 m. long, 23 m. wide, 50 m. high), 407 meters of shafts and approximately 3615 meters of tunnel, both lined and unlined, with diameters varying from 4.2 meters to 9.0 meters. A case history is presented, including the early pilot tunnel exploratory work and how this affected design, the design of the project, and the excavation, rock support and tunnel lining work. Problems and experiences encountered during the construction are given. The effects of high horizontal insitu stresses in the granitic gneiss are discussed along with solution taken.

Deformations during heating and cooling of three drifts in granitic rock were influenced by the presence of faults and shear zones. Thermal deformations were significantly larger in sheared and faulted zones than where the rock was jointed. but neither sheared nor faulted. Furthermore. thermal deformations in faulted or sheared rock were not significantly recovered during subsequent cooling thus a permament deformation remained. This inelastic response is in contrast with elastic behavior identified in unfaulted and unsheared rock segments. A companion paper (Butkovich and Patrick, 1986a) indicates that deformations in un- sheared or unfaulted rock were effectively modeled as an elastic response. We conclude that permanent deformations occurred in fractures with crushed minerals and fracture filling or gouge materials. Potential mechanisms for this permanent deformation are asperity re-adjustments during thermal deformations. micro-shearing, asperity crushing and crushing of the secondary fracture filling minerals. Additionally, modulus differences in sheared or faulted rock as compared to more intact rock would result in greater deformations in response to the same thermal loads.

The Doe Run Co. emerged from the depressed lead market of the mid-1980s as North America&apos;s leading lead producer. Doe Run was lean and mean but quickly recognized that technology had advanced while the company was held to the belt tightening slump. With the 1990s approaching, Doe Run moved quickly to update its technology and control equipment to ensure its position as an industry leader. Doe Run was formed in 1986 when Fluor Corp. and Homestake Mining Co. combined their lead-zinc-copper assets in Missouri to form a joint venture. Doe Run is now owned by Fluor Corp. A rich history of mining, milling and smelting started in Missouri in 1862 when the St. Joseph Lead Co. was founded. Subsequent acquisitions led to the formation of St. Joe Minerals, which was later purchased by Fluor Corp. Six mines, four concentrators and two smelters are presently being operated, and a secondary lead smelter was recently commissioned. The Viburnum, Buick and Fletcher operations are lead, zinc and copper flotation concentrators, while the Brushy Creek plant is set up to process high copper-low lead ores. This article looks primarily at the process control installation at the Fletcher concentrator.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a study to evaluate the effect of ventilation on the performance of automatic sprinkler systems in extinguishing wood crib fires. Experiments were conducted at airflows of 0, 0.76, 1.5, 2.5, and 4.1 m/s. Two experiments were conducted at each airflow, using 74° C fast response pendent sprinklers in one experiment and 74° C fast response horizontal sidewall sprinklers in the other experiment. In the experiments at airflows of 0 and 0.76 m/s, sprinklers were located directly above the fire and 2.4 m upstream and downstream of the fire. The sprinkler directly above the fire was the only sprinkler to operate with no discernible difference in the suppression capability of the pendent and horizontal sidewall sprinklers. In the experiments at airflows of 1.5 and 2.5 m/s, sprinklers were located directly above the fire and 2.4 and 4.8 m downstream of the fire. The sprinkler located 2.4 m downstream was the only sprinkler to operate with the horizontal sidewall sprinkler being more effective in extinguishing the wood crib fire. The average response times of the sprinklers at airflows of 0.76, 1.5, and 2.5 m/s were 3-1/2 times the average response time of the sprinklers at 0 m/s. The results of this study will help enhance the safety of the nation&apos;s miners.
