MINExpo INTERNATIONL 2000 was a good place for companies to introduce new products, technologies and services to the mining industry. Caterpillar took that a step further. The company hosted a one-day preview of its mining products at its Tinaja Hills Training and Demonstration Center near Tucson, AZ. About 30 members of the trade press spent the day at Tinaja Hills before heading on to Las Vegas for MINExpo INTERNATIONAL 2000. Dozens of Caterpillar professionals provided the editors with a first-hand look at Caterpillar’s mining trucks, loaders, excavators, road graders, water trucks and engines. In addition, these Cat experts explained the intricacies of each piece of equipment, the latest technology that led their improvement and their value to the company’s mining customers.

"The evaluation of data and information provided by the existing traditional indicators in sustainability assessments is most important. Therefore the Institute of Mining Engineering I from the RWTH Aachen University developed indicators and an assessment system for the mineral raw materials industry on operation, company and sector level on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Labour (Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Arbeit, BMWA) and the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe, BGR). In the course of the development of indicators for the raw materials industry quality indicators on different levels of the sustainability assessment procedure have been identified and developed. The following paper describes some of the results focussing on the development and integration of quality indicators into sustainability assessment systems."

Introduction Joints often have profound effects on elastic properties and strength of rock masses and therefore on rock slope stability. In surface mine slopes, joints are usually too numerous to be taken into account individually, so an equivalent properties approach is necessary. Previous work that treats a jointed rock mass as an equivalent composite material of joints and intact rock between resulted in excellent agreement between estimated and true rock mass elastic moduli in case of fully persistent joints (e.g., Pariseau, 1999) Rock mass failure mechanisms on joints and through intact rock were retained obviating the need for an equivalent rock mass strength. Impersistent joints, which are not continuous on a joint plane, can be accommodated (Pariseau, 2003). However, slope stability analysis of a large, deep copper mine indicated a need for computational efficiency even in two-dimensional analysis of vertical sections through pit walls (Puri, 2006). The analyses by the popular finite element method used small elements of bench size near the pit slopes and much larger elements away from the pit walls. The reasons for the graded meshes were numerical quality (small elements) and computational economy (large elements). Small elements contained only a few joints, while the larger elements contained hundreds of joints and led to impractical computation run times (days!). A new modeling procedure that recognizes sufficiently large elements as representative volume elements (REV’s) overcomes this obstacle. A companion improvement recognizes the concept of a representative area element (RAE) in association with joint impersistence and the probability that joint material occupies a considered site. Both are steps towards greater model realism and a practical slope stability analysis procedure. Consider the open pit mine photo shown in Figure 1(a), a companion plan view in Figure 1(b), and the problem of slope stability where high slope angles favor economics but low slope angles favor safety. These competing factors in surface mining generally result in some sections of the mine that have unstable slopes that require monitoring and perhaps mitigating action to improve stability. Although stability of a given section may not be easy to quantify with a single number, useful design guidance can be obtained from a finite element analysis of a proposed mining sequence leading to future pit slopes and profiles. The presence of water from rain and snow melt indicates a need for a coupled analysis that links water pressure, effective stress and total stress (Schmelter, 2001).

Remote methane detection State and federal regulations require frequent measurements to verify that safe methane levels are maintained in underground coal mines. Ventilation control is the primary means of maintaining safe methane levels. In the immediate face area, where the highest methane levels occur, methane measurements are required every 20 minutes during active mining. To perform these measurements, temporary roof supports must be erected. This allows a miner to reach the face. There a hand-held methanometer is used to make the measurements. This procedure is time consuming and potentially hazardous. To facilitate the measuring process and reduce the miner's exposure to roof falls, the US Bureau of Mines has developed a prototype optical device. It can measure methane remotely from distances up to 12 m (40 ft). The device uses two infrared signals, reflected from the coal face, rib, or roof. One signal is absorbed by the methane, the other is not. The ratio of the two signals determines the average methane concentration in the face area. The prototype detector has also been successfully tested at the Lake Lynn, PA Laboratory. Instantaneous responses were obtained for methane in the ventilation airflow and for methane layered near the roof. Conventional methanometers required from five to 25 seconds to respond to the methane in the ventilation airflow. They did not respond to methane in the roof layer. Ignition suppression system The incidence has increased of fractional spark ignition at the mine face. One reason is the advent of mechanical mining. Another is the more difficult ventilation conditions associated with deeper and more extensive underground workings. To cope with the problem of frictional ignition, the Bureau of Mines initiated research to develop a system that would provide rapid detection of incipient methane-air ignition. Then, rapid dispersion of a quenching agent would ensure that the methane flame was extinguished while it was still relatively small. This concept was successfully demonstrated by suppressing explosions in the Bureau's Bruceton, PA experimental mine. But the bulkiness of the early storage-dispersal system proved impractical to retrofit onto face equipment. In a cooperative effort by the Bureau and the Mine Safety and Health Administration, a more compact system has been developed and is being tested. Several years ago, Hudco Industrial Products began experimenting with the idea of levitating a conveyor belt with a film of air, much like the puck on an air-hockey table. While conducting its research, the company found out that some Russian and Dutch companies attempted the concept during the 1970s. After studying those conveyors, Hudco determined that its design was better. The Hudco advanced air-supported conveyor consists of an air-tight plenum, or chamber, that runs the length of the belt. The topside of the plenum has a formed trough. It corresponds to the profile of conventional troughing rollers. Low-pressure air is provided to the sealed plenum from a low horsepower blower. This pressurized air is metered and released through the central portion of the trough and reacts against the underside of the belt. The differential pressure between the top and bottom surfaces creates the lift to support the loaded belt. Airtight covers are installed to seal the transported materials in the plenum trough.

Like most of you, I would rather work on a job than talk about it. But it is fruitful to spend some time taking stock of important developments in the heavy construction field. One of the strongest recent movements affecting the industry has been the push for safety. I regret that it is a recent development. Not that builders were against safety. Too often though, it was easier to continue with dangerous old work methods than to try something new. Too often, it was easier for equipment manufacturers to build production tools with little consideration for worker safety. And too often, accidents and gruesome disasters occurred. The ultimate result of on-the-job injuries in construction and other industries was the Federal Government's Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970. Individual states were required either to accept OSHA or pass updated regulations at least as stringent as the Federal requirements. These new rules must be strictly obeyed -- not just because they carry civil and criminal sanctions -- but because they correct unsafe conditions and reduce hazardous acts. Though some OSHA measures have been criticized as superfluous, most of them do in fact save lives and limbs. Equally important, the tunneler who follows the new safety regulations can be fairly certain of an efficient, uninterrupted operation. Regulations do sometimes bring rewards.

This paper presents a simplified computerized method for the prediction of maximum subsidence and the subsidence profile for the Appalachian Coal Basin using the Hyperbolic Function Profile Method. Several case histories are cited to demonstrate the appropriateness of the predictive method. In addition, sample runs and a detailed listing of the computer program is provided. Other popular subsidence prediction methods are discussed and compared with the Hyperbolic Function Profile Method.

The San Vicente Pipeline Tunnel Project involves the construction of an 8.5-foot-diameter water pipeline in an 11 mile tunnel in San Diego, California. The tunnel is located in extremely variable geologic conditions of strong granitic and volcanic rocks, weak sedimentary rocks, abrasive conglomerates, and mixed face conditions. One reach of the tunnel is a 5,200-foot mixed face reach that includes Friars Formation Conglomerate overlying granitic rock. Due to the variable ground conditions in this reach, the use of a TBM was deemed too risky and the contract documents required drill-and-blast and hand mining methods. Although it was not required, the contractor elected to construct this reach using NATM methods. This paper describes the geology of the 5,200-foot mixed-face reach, the design evaluation, and the construction challenges faced on this project.

During 1996 and 1997, Oregon experienced flooding on a scale not seen in many years. Some gravel pits located near rivers experienced erosion and, in several cases, breaches between the gravel pit and the river. Initial evaluation of several sites that experienced breaches indicates that impacts to the river system are complex and vary significantly from site to site. The impacts to the adjacent river system may be viewed as both positive and negative. Several floodplain-mining sites in Oregon located in areas of historic river flow have reverted to active riverbed. In many cases, state and federal fisheries biologists and university researchers see the resulting increase in channel complexity and habitat as favorable. The Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries – Mined Land Reclamation Program (DOGAMI-MLR) is performing additional studies of the impacts to the off-channel areas that resulted from the 1996 floods. More data is needed to make sound floodplain decisions regarding mining.

Real copper prices during the past several decades display two striking characteristics. First, they are highly volatile. Within a year or two, copper prices can rise or fall by 30% or more. Second, over the longer term, they are falling. Indeed, since 1970, the secular trend price for copper is down by more than 50%. Figure 1 highlights both of these characteristics. It shows the average annual US producer price for copper since 1970 measured in constant 2001 US dollars. While the London Metal Exchange (LME) copper price is not shown, it and the US producer price have for some time moved more or less together. So pronounced short-run fluctuations around a significant long-run decline describe copper prices, not only in the United States, but around the world.

Introduction Most high purity silica is produced from crystalline quartz, generally from sand. However, there is a small area of southern Illinois where a porous, friable white chert rock is found that is very different in physical form from quartz sand. This microcrystalline material, commonly referred to as tripoli, is more easily ground to micron sizes than sand. Although of similar Moh's hardness, microcrystalline tripoli is less abrasive than either ground quartz sand or many synthetic abrasives. Location The southwestern corner of Illinois is underlain by extensive deposits of very porous chert; in some places the material is quite white. Two companies, Illinois Minerals Co. and Tammsco Inc., mine and process this white material. The Illinois Minerals plant is located at Elco, and the Tammsco plant is in Tamms, IL. Both companies mine from various locations within a 10-mile truck haul of their plants. Production from this district has been continuous since at least 1915. Malvern Minerals Co. mines and processes a generally similar microcrystalline, friable novaculite near Hot Springs, AR. Geology The southern Illinois white tripoli area is on the southern flank of the Illinois Basin. The commercial silica zone is a facies of the Clear Creek chert of Lower Devonian Age. To the north, where it occurs deep in the basin, the Clear Creek is a siliceous limestone. In the mining area, thin overburden has allowed access by surface ground water, which has leached away the carbonate content and left a quite pure silica residue. Fossils characteristic of sea bottom deposition, such as brachiopods and trilobites, are occasionally encountered in mining. The structure of the mining area is poorly known, due to infrequent outcrops. Strata in most mines are inclined at dips of 5° to 20°. There appear to be occasional high angle normal and reverse faults, but these are seldom of any significance in mining. The friable white silica zone mined in the Clear Creek chert is overlain by dark brownish-red chert and siliceous shale. Exploration drilling to date has not encountered the base of the microcrystalline tripolitic zone. Chemical content Leaching by ground water solution has removed virtually all the carbonate from the original siliceous limestone. Impurities encountered are red to yellow iron oxides, aluminous clays, and occasional black manganese oxides. The silica has no detectable formula water. A typical chemical analysis and physical properties are listed in Tables 1 and 2. Mineralogy and crystallinity Southern Illinois friable tripoli appears amorphous under the polarizing microscope. No crystal structure and only occasional, vague, patchy anisotropism is evident. However, the material gives an excellent quartz X-ray diffraction pattern. This paper presents the results of a study on cellular acclimation of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans to sulfur biooxidation in terms of cells growth and changes in surface properties and morphologies of both cells and sulfur particles. The results showed that A. ferrooxidans cells were grown faster and demonstrated higher concentration in the soluble thiosulfate substrate than in nonsoluble hydrophobic S0 substrate. The results showed that A. ferrooxidans cells acclimated to the sulfur biooxidation by actively expressing some extracellular polymers substance and maybe some outer membrane proteins that modified the surface properties of both sulfur particles and the cells themselves. In addition, the results showed that the A. ferrooxidans cells were able to dynamically adsorb to or desorb from the surface of sulfur particles. The cells aggregating onto the S0 surface enhanced the use of S0 substrate by the bacteria cells. This mode may be one of the most important characteristics for the better growth and propagation of the cells in solid sulfur-containing media.

In 1980, some US cars were designed and built to metric dimensions; wine and gas were sold by the liter; and the March of Dimes Walkathon was measured in kilometers. Although the US Congress has taken a ''soft" approach to metrication, and public resistance to the idea remains strong, the use of metric units is becoming more and more widespread. As the minerals industry becomes more international in scope, US mining companies are converting to the metric system-particularly those companies with business interests overseas.

To reduce fire hazards from spontaneous combustion of coal in longwall gob areas, a series of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were conducted by National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to model the spontaneous heating of coal in longwall gob areas. The previous modeling results demonstrate that spontaneous heating of coal usually occurred behind the longwall shields and along the face with a bleeder ventilation system. Assuming a stationary longwall face, the spontaneous heating could turn to a spontaneous fire in several days for the most reactive coal under favorable conditions. When the longwall face advances, the spontaneous heating process will be significantly affected. In this study, the effect of longwall face advance on the spontaneous heating in the gob area is investigated using the CFD model developed in previous studies. One longwall panel with a bleeder ventilation system is simulated. The width of the panel is 300 m, while the length of the panel is changed between 1,000 to 2,000 m. The same permeability and porosity profiles are used for gobs with different lengths. The spontaneous heating first develops in the gob when the longwall face is stationary. Then, the face advances at a certain rate. The face advance is simulated as a series of discrete movements, and the effect of the face advance on the maximum temperature developed during the face stoppage is examined. The Manapouri Power Station is New Zealand’s largest hydroelectric facility located on the South Island of New Zealand. Constructed in the 1960’s, it includes a 700 MW under-ground power station and a 9.8 km (6.1 mile), 9.2 m (30 ft) diameter tailrace tunnel. The output of the power station is currently limited due to excessive head losses in the tailrace tunnel. To remedy this situation, the Electricity Corporation of New Zealand (ECNZ) retained Woodward-Clyde to design a second tailrace tunnel and appurtenant facilities and prepare Contract Documents for construction. The Project will involve the construction of a 9.8 km(6.1 miles), 10 m (33 ft) diameter, TBM-mined tunnel, hydraulic control structures at the upstream and downstream ends of the tunnel, an underground dewatering shaft and station, and tailrace channel improvements. This paper summarizes the key design and construction issues addressed during the planning and design phases, outlines the risk management provisions incorporated in the Contract, and overviews the Interactive Tender Process (ITP)that was implemented during the pre-tendering and tendering periods.

A 16 m by 4.7 m by 24.5 m (52 ft by 15.5 ft by 80.5 ft) underground ore bin was constructed at an 810 m (2660 ft) overburden depth in poor quality, faulted and altered intrusive rocks at Molycorp's block caving molybdenum mine. Geological engineering incorporated detailed structural mapping, rock quality classification, in-situ stress field determinations, numerical stress and failure analysis, and convergence monitoring. The ore bin was mined by conventional methods from the top down and utilized a bored raise for mucking. The initial ground support of rock bolts, lightweight steel sets, and reinforced concrete was later supplemented with an array of 6, 12 and 21 m tensioned, grouted rock bolts when wall closure was noted in the upper ore bin area. The supplementary support was optimized by computer analysis and monitoring.

Sustainability issues are from rising interest and importance for the mineral industry worldwide. In order to bring them into management processes and to improve decision processes, economic, ecological and social aspects of products, services or technologies have to be assessed. In this paper, the concept of integrated sustainability assessment is presented. Each aspect is assessed with quantitative or qualitative methods. The results of these ecological, social and economic sub-assessments are integrated by the means of Fuzzy Logic in order to regard preferences of decision maker and circumstances of decision situation. An example demonstrates the application of this new instrument.
