A power-series trend curve of elapsed time was estimated by using time series data of measured concentrations of carbon monoxide in the Taiheiyo coal mine, Hokkaido, Japan. The difference between the moving average concentration data and the estimated data from the trend curve showed linear correlation when plotted on a normal probability paper and a correlation coefficient value of 0.99. It is concluded that the estimate of carbon monoxide concentration using moving average values of concentrations compares very well with the results obtained from the trend curve within the three-sigma (standard deviation) range of the distribution. Thus, it is believed the results can be used to monitor and detect abnormal ventilation conditions in a ventilation network such as the occurrence of spontaneous combustion at an early stage.

Exxon is reclaiming an 80-hm2 (200¬acre) Wyoming uranium tailings basin in accordance with US Nuclear Regula¬tory Commission (NRC) requirements. The reclamation plan is designed to control the tailings and their radioactive emissions for at least 1000 years. Rigorous modeling and analyses of potential erosion by wind and water were used in planning. The use of riprap was minimized and the need for long¬term reclamation maintenance was eliminated. The resulting design is simi¬lar to regions stable from erosion cre¬ated by nature. The concepts used in the design and implementation have wider reclamation application. Highland history Exxon operated the Highland uranium operations from 1972 until mid-1984. Open pit and underground operations mined the roll front, sandstone ore body. The 2.5 kt/d (3000 stpd) mill employed conventional crushing, grinding, sulfu¬ric acid leach, CCD, SX, precipitation, and drying circuits. The mill produced 10 Mt (11 million st) of tailings. An¬other operator began commercial scale in situ leach operations in 1988. The tailings basin was constructed by deposition of mill tailings in a natural ravine dammed with a 30-m (100-ft) high by 1050-m (3400-ft) long clay core earthen dam built entirely downstream of tailings. Figure 1 shows the layout of the tail¬ings basin in 1984. Tailings were de¬posited along the dam face on the east side of the basin as well as in the west end and along the south edge until the early 1980s. This left a deep water pond in the middle of the basin. The deep pond was largely filled with tailings during the last four years of mill opera¬tions by the construction of two tailings causeways and the operation of a float¬ing tailings line. The pond water volume was mini¬mized by recycling tailings water to the mill and by operating a 32-L/s (500¬gpm) evaporation enhancement spray system during the last few years of mill operations. Regulatory requirements Several conceptual tailings basin rec¬lamation plans were prepared during the mine life. In September 1984, Exxon began preparation of a detailed plan in response to an NRC request. Water, Waste and Land Inc. (WWL) of Fort Collins, CO was selected to help pre¬pare the plan that was submitted to the NRC in December 1984. The design had to meet the require¬ments found in NRC regulations (NRC, 1985). These were based on regulations prepared by the Environmental Protec¬tion Agency (EPA, 1983) at the man¬date of federal law (UMTRA, 1978). The NRC regulations contain strict primary standards and a somewhat more flexible set of secondary standards. The primary standards include requiring that: • radiation from tailings be reduced to background levels; • radon gas emitted by the tailings be reduced to 20 pCi/m2/s from the surface of the reclaimed tailings pile; • tailings not be dispersed into the environment; and • these conditions endure without routine maintenance for at least 200 years and for 1000 years to the extent reasonably attainable. The lengthy time requirements pre¬sented a large engineering challenge. Radon is a radioactive, chemically inert gas with a 3.8 day half-life. It is released from uranium tailings by the radioactive decay of radium, which, in turn, is a radioactive decay product of uranium. Radon emissions from ura¬nium tailings can be controlled with an earthen cover thick enough that the radon gas decays to its solid, short-lived radio¬active daughters before the radon dif¬fuses through the cover material into the air.

This paper considers optimization of the design and operation of an air-injected hydrocyclone (AIHC) via a genetic algorithm (CAI. The AIHC is a mineral separating device, developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, that combines the selectivity of flotation with the capacity and simplicity of hydrocyclones. GA's are search procedures based on the mechanics of natural genetics. Computer results demonstrate the ability of a GA to rapidly locate design and operating parameters that improve AIHC performance. A computer model of the GA-designed AIHC predicts improved recovery over that currently being obtained with an AIHC in operation at the U.S. Bureau of Mines Tuscaloosa Research Center.

The Pit Lake at Island Copper has evolved into a 3-layered meromictic system. Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) is collected and injected into the lake at 220 m depth via 2 diffuser systems. In situ dye studies were conducted during 2 differing hydrological regimes in order to determine the behavior of the ARD plume within the Pit Lake. Results indicated that when runoff from the waste dumps was low, the injected ARD remained within the bottom half of the intermediate layer of the Pit Lake, initially below depths of 90 m. However, when runoff from the waste dumps was high, the injected ARD at -220 m depth rose through the intermediate water column layer rapidly, but did not breach the top pycnocline at -10 m depth. Overall, the system is currently performing as a mixing bowl with a strong boundary or cap at the upper pycnocline. maintaining mixing below the 10 m depth water level.

When driving a shallow soft ground bore, the appearance of surface craters along the tunnel alinement indicates trouble, particularly when a major highway is intersected. During the excavation of a 3.7 m diam tunnel in Seattle, Washington a chemical grouting program was implemented to stabilize soil conditions sufficiently to allow advancement of the mole without loss of ground. Unanticipated mixed face conditions consisting of saturated running sand and some boulder pockets bedded on top of dense glacial till created excavation difficulties. A discussion of problems and corrective measures is presented.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is researching the application of solvent extraction technology to highly acidic (pH < 1) copper leach liquors. As increasingly complex copper ores are mined for leaching, use of highly acidic leach solutions maybe necessary to effectively recover the contained metal values. A mixture of two commercially available extractants, based on aldoximes and substituted 8-hydroxyquinoline, which has a high transfer efficiency has been identified. A synthetic leach liquor, containing 5 g/L Cu at pH 0.9 was processed utilizing the mixed extractant and a laboratory SX circuit. The loaded organic was stripped with a synthetic barren electrolyte compatible with electrowinning technology.

An increasing concentration of coal production, especially in the circumstances of intensive methane inflow makes the coal mine managing staff apply new techniques of safe mining. It paves also the way for scientists to develop new directions of investigations and implementation of state-of -the- art technical solutions. Simultaneously, it could be noticed that the funds assigned for expansive &apos;En situ &apos; investigation are continuously decreasing. Better and better results are reached when applying computer technique in calculations of the parameters of ventilation process. Recent theoretical and experimental investigations of air and gas (methane) flow in longwall areas with caving, combined with the implementation of methane drainage system allowed to create, a mathematical model and consequently to elaborate a computer supported numerical simulation of discussed phenomena. The mathematical model has been modified and the simulation program was prepared in such a way that the software is convenient for a user looking for an optimal solution. The paper presented the methodology of optimal choice of following parameters: - ventilation system - rate of flow through the wall. The procedure takes into consideration keeping a safe level of concentration methane in air flowing through the longwall as well as the criterion of maximum methane concentration within the methane drainage pipe line. Results of variant computer simulation regarding the longwall with caving are shown in graphs and tables.

The legislation that prohibits the recirculation of air in coal mines was formulated because of the fear that concentrations of airborne pollutants would rise to dangerous levels. This paper undertakes a simple analysis of the effects of a controlled recirculation system on the gas concentrations in headings. It is shown, through an algebraic formulation and a numerical example, that a properly planned system of controlled recirculation leads to a reduction in the maximum general body gas concentration that occurs in a heading.

INTRODUCTION The Magmont mine is a joint venture of Cominco American Inc. (operator) and Dresser Minerals, Inc. The mine-mill operation is located approximately 160 km (100 miles) southwest of St. Louis, MO, in what is commonly referred to as the "Viburnum Trend.” The Magmont mine is designed for a production rate of 3810.2 t/d (4200 stpd) on a 5-day week, three shifts per day basis. Initial production began in 1968. The mine is open stope, room-and-pillar, and essentially horizontal along the trend of the ore body. Briefly, the main geological structure can be described as a brecciated graben bounded by reverse faults. The ore body in cross section is shaped like a bell curve with some lateral extension at the lower part. Presently outlined ore is 609.6 to 762 m (2000 to 2500 ft) in width and 2133.6 m (7000 ft) in length. The ore varies in thickness from 4.87 m (16 ft) on the fringes to an average of 27 m (90 ft) in the high ore areas bounded by the reverse faults. Lead is the primary metal with zinc and copper secondary. MINE DESIGN The basic design of open stope, room-and-pillar mines has been described by several writers and need not be repeated here. (Anon., 1970; Bullock, 1973; Casteel, 1972; Christiansen et a]., 1970; and Lane, 1964) This discussion covers the mining sequence as applied to the particular problems at the Magmont mine, the use of equipment, and deployment of the work force. In the upper portion of the Magmont ore body is a layer locally called the False Davis shale. This layer lies below the true Davis shale, is normally interbedded with dolomite, is of varying thickness, and if mineralized, is included in the top pass of the mining sequence. In thick ore areas this layer will be 2.13 to 2.43 m (7 to 8 ft) in thickness and will occur in the upper portion of the pillars. Due to its incompetency the presence of this False Davis layer is of primary concern in mine planning and operation. Mining areas are divided into three basic groups by ore thickness. First are areas of ore up to 6.09 m (20 ft) in thickness. These areas are below the False Davis shale and are mined single pass with drill jumbo. Second are those areas up 13.71 to 15.24 m (45 to 50 ft) in height. The first 4.87-111 (16-ft) Pass is taken at the top of the ore and the back and pillars secured. Benching the lower portion(s) in 4.57 to 4.87-m (15 to 16-ft) passes is then done with either a drill jumbo drilling horizontally or a crawler drill drilling vertically. Normally these areas are below the Table 1. Productivities per Manshift False Davis shale. These areas may also be mined by back slashing, or overhand benching, where the first 4.87-m (16-ft) pass is taken at the base of the ore and successive 4.87- m (16-ft) passes are taken upward. A minimum amount of back slashing is done at Magmont since it requires repetition of roof control on each pass and roof control is the single largest stoping cost at Magmont. Ore left to provide a working platform oxidizes and is coated by oil spills thus reducing metallurgical recoveries. The third mining area is over 15.24 m (50 ft) in height UP to a maximum of 40.23 m (132 ft) and will encompass the False Davis shale. These areas are mined by first driving +15% inclines to the top of the ore body. The top pass is mined and the back is bolted and roof mats installed as a matter of standard practice to minimize roof problems as mining progresses downward. Once the back and pillars on the top pass are secured, benching begins on successive passes with either the drill jumbo or crawler drill. Pillars on all successive passes below the top pass are secured as necessary. While benching progresses below the top pass, the pass at the base of the ore body is mined leaving a sill of 4.57 to 7.62 m (15 to 25 ft) in thickness to be removed with the crawler drill in a retreating manner. Rooms are mined on a 1.57 rad (90") grid pattern to insure alignment of pillars where multiple passes are taken. Pillars are designed on a 17.98-m (59-ft) spacing with rooms up to 10.66 m (35 ft) in width. Heading widths are wide enough for the mobile equipment to turn without additional allowance for curves. The result is a flexible layout which provides a maximum number of headings available for high extraction rates and grade control. PRODUCTION Incentive Bonus Incentive bonuses play an important part in the mine production at Magmont. Production crews are trained to perform only one of the mining functions of drilling, blasting, mucking. or roof bolting. This specialization, or functionalization, is augmented by development to open all possible stoping areas as early as possible in the life of the mine. This insures that each crew will have enough headings to perform its specialty. The incentive bonuses increase exponentially as output increases. The lucrative incentive bonus coupled with the specialization of the production crews and proper mine development have combined to give the high productivities shown in Table 1. Development crews perform all mining functions in their area. The incentive bonus is paid on a per foot basis, Crews on different shifts working the same heading share equally in the bonus proportional to their contract hours worked.

The authors present a new mineral price model, compare it with time series and naive models, and analyze the effects of the forecasting models on mineral project evaluation. Mineral commodity prices are volatile, which means that the results of evaluation tools that do not treat the stochasticity of metal prices rigorously may be misleading. But, in mine valuation, commodity price forecasts are required to assess the economic viability of a project. In this study, a new mineral forecasting method, called the MNDRVG-MFNN-RM model, which incorporates randomness, neural networks and regression models, is introduced. The MNDRVG-MFNN-RM model, a naive method and time series model were used to forecast gold prices for two successive years for the evaluation of a proposed open-pit mine. The MNDRVG-MFNN-RM model yielded the best results among the three methods. It produced the true optimum pit limits and an optimum pit value slightly less than the true optimum value. The main novelty of the methodology is the simulation and rigorous analysis of the randomness property associated with mineral prices to reduce the estimation and forecast errors, an important contribution to mineral venture evaluation, mine planning and design.

There are many methods available for the estimation of geologic parameters (Popoff, 1966; Barnes, 1980). In the last decade a new and relatively sophisticated technique using statistical theory has emerged: geostatistical kriging (David, 1977; Journal and Huijbregts, 1978; Rendu, 1978). An interesting property of geostatistical estimation is that when a geologic parameter is estimated for a given volume, not only is the estimate generated but an associated measure of certainty is produced as well. This statistical measure of estimation confidence is called the estimation variance. While the concept of an estimation variance is universally considered to be a good idea, mining engineers and geologists do not currently have the tools to incorporate it into their planning and quantitative analysis. This paper attempts to develop and present some of the necessary tools required to incorporate estimation uncertainty into mine planning. Geologic uncertainty is portrayed as an economic business risk. This risk is objectively characterized, and-the associated cost is quantified. Geologic delineation sampling is viewed in this light as an economic commodity with an associated cost and value. A coal mine planning example is used as a focus in this presentation. The data used is real, though it has been modified to maintain data security and project anonymity.

Airflow velocity vectors by a forcing auxiliary fan at a heading face were measured in an actual size model gallery and an actual mine. The location of an outlet of ventilation duct gives significant effects on the airflow at the heading in the gallery. It was also found that there were several stagnated regions which may have danger of methane accumulation. The flow were also examined using the visualization technique by laser light in a reduced scale model. The flow in reduced scale model showed similar behavior to those observed in actual size galleries. The air velocity at the outlet has no significant effect on the airflow. It was found that a region to be ventilated by the direct flow of the exhaust fan is limited to a relatively short distance but a secondary flow region is generated near the heading face. CFD ( Computational Fluid Dynamics ) method was also developed to examine the airflow. The calculated results coincides with those measured by actual and reduced scale models. It is concluded that the CFD is useful tool for the analysis of ventilation at the headings.

From 1996 to 2001, Wayne County and 13 suburban Detroit communities constructed the Downriver Regional Storage and Transport System (DRSTS) to improve area water quality, protect public health and alleviate basement flooding. The project consisted of a 10-mile long storage and transport tunnel, a pump station at the existing wastewater treatment plant, 9 miles of relief sewers (6 in tunnel and 3 in open cut). The work was separated into 10 contracts. Due to hydraulic design requirements and other constraints, the tunnel profile was located generally 65 feet below ground surface within a soft to medium clay strata which skimmed along the top of a very dense glacial till “hardpan” overlaying bedrock. Boulders within the tunnel bore were recognized as a significant, but indeterminate risk. This paper presents a case history of the owner’s contracting strategy for risk assumption and management of the boulder impacts on the project. Actual conditions encountered during construction and contractual adjustments made to address problems are reviewed, and recommendations for future contracts are included.

This article describes a procedure for calculating the recoverable reserves of stratified orebodies characterised by a thin and irregular layers. An application on the phosphate deposits in the N&apos;Zeto region of the Popular Republic of Angola is also described. The procedure consists in building a block model of the deposit through the conditioned multivarial geostatistical simulation of small areal units. The recoverable reserves are then calculated and defined by applying to the model a selection processes based on measured geological/economic parameters taken from the drillholes: thickness of overburden and mineralised layers, economic grain-size fraction, grade. The procedure also takes account both of the geometrical constraints of the mining method and dilution. For reasons of confidentiality, a multiplier has been applied to the values adopted for the sampling data.

Discussion by G. Sanders The studies reported on in this paper were initiated to draw attention to the severe contamination problem in the Section 30 drilling program at Chimney Creek. The lithologic-subset sampling study reached a different conclusion from that presented in your paper, and I wish to comment on your subsequent analysis of the data and your conclusions. Request for more complete data In the section on subsampling, you mention that the subordinate lithologies were separated and sampled, yet only the dominantlithology gold value is plotted in Fig. 4. In a contamination study, the reader is interested in the assay values for the individual subsets. Please include a table of the subsample assay data in your reply. Also, please indicate which analytical methods were used to arrive at the gold values in the subsampling study. Turning barren rock into low-grade ore Figure 5 is very revealing and typical of all of the cross sections in Section 30. Note the long strings of low-grade mineralization spread out for hundreds of feet below the ore zones. There were some very high gold values found in certain contaminated fractions during the subset sampling. The conclusion, here, was that the distinctive, strongly-mineralized dolomite layer was probably loose and crumbly and continued to disintegrate during drilling. This caused salting of the unmineralized rock samples below. Missing the high-grade part of the ore body In your statistical analysis, you directly compare the reverse circulation assays to the diamond drill assays in Section 30. Two points argue against a direct comparison and suggest the differences are greater than the 3 % that you report. First, any core loss in a gold zone most likely means that the true gold values are greater. The drillers lost significant amounts of the clay-rich, Section-30 gold mineralization. Also, the initiated salt-mud system, an attempt to improve the core recovery, met with little success. Second, the practice of not sampling core geologically, but instead sampling on even 5-foot intervals, adds a deliberate dilution to the core assay values by including a portion of nonmineralized rock in the first and last samples of each high- grade intercept. The result is often a pair of low-grade assay values on either side of a high-grade gold zone. In reality, a high-grade gold zone has a very sharp assay wall that is often bounded by barren rock. This sampling method may make the diamond-drill core assays more like the reverse circulation values and may help explain the statistical similarities you found. However, it does not represent the true gold values in the high-grade parts of the deposit. You cannot deny that, by careful geological sampling of the drill core, higher and sharper assay values will be obtained. The low core recovery and the diamond-drill-core sampling method used act together to lower the diamond-core assay values. The 3% difference you found between the reverse-circulation and diamond-core assay values could be much larger when you consider what the true diamond-drill core values would be with optimum core recovery and a geologic sampling method for the core. Should statistics have been applied here? The statement "... that reverse circulation holes have overestimated the values of some ore zones and underestimated the values of others" (p. 345) is not correct. The subsampling confirmed what the cross sections hinted at in Section 30. Namely, beneath the high-grade zones, the reverse circulation holes created, by contamination, large intercepts of low-grade ore in regions of barren rock. Because the low-grade material was not there to begin with, this is not a process of overestimating low-grade mineralization. The next statement that "the average result is similar to that of the diamond drill holes" may apply to the data set numerically, but it is not true when viewed spatially on cross sections. Adjacent reverse circulation and diamond drill holes are almost impossible to correlate, high-grade zone values vary widely and many low-grade intercepts make no geologic sense. The subset sampling and cross sections presented in the first part of the paper show that the reverse circulation portion of the data set has some serious problems, as highlighted above, and should not have been dealt with statistically at all. This paper presents a methodology for design and simulation of underground ventilation networks, based on the analysis of real situations, followed by the careful interpretation of the obtained results in order to implement their optimization. The method involves two basic steps: the construction of a complete ventilation data base for the mine, upon a series of care- fully previous surveying studies in order to determine the values of its ventilation parameters, and the simulation of relevant situations for the ventilation system optimisation. A simulation model, modified after the Hardy Cross method, allows the testing of various mechanical means located at different points of the network, aiming to determine the technical-economical feasibility of each solution. These simulations obey the directions of air flow in each point of the mine, as determined by the directions of the natural ventilation flow established in the data base that represents the network. The methodology was validated upon studies developed in ventilation network of the Panasqueira Mine (Portugal), in two situations: regular production (mechanical ventilation) and care- maintenance (natural ventilation).

This paper deals with theoretical considerations and practical applications of ventilation network calculations, based on mass flow rates and performed by computer simulation in our deepest operating mine - Creighton. The paper also deals with natural ventilation. In the usually accepted air-flow theory, the air is assumed to behave like an incompresssible medium. This introduces considerable error where temperature and pressure changes are great. Therefore, any study of the air flow in deep mines, must take into account compressibility. Basing ventilation calculations on mass flow allows a distinction to be made between air leakage and such quantity changes which occur due to air density changes. The energy which is required to convey one pound of air through a mine can be obtained by adding all head losses hL (ft-lb) of the ventilation paths through which the air flows. However, this total energy will not be correctly expressed in a compressible fluid by summing all pressure losses PL = hL x d (ft-lb/ft3 = lb/ft2) d = density. There is a law of mass conservation, but no law of volume conservation. Natural ventilation is caused by the conversion of heat into mechanical energy and not by the difference in upcast and downcast densities, as often believed. In an existing mine natural ventilation can be determined correctly by plotting a pressure volume diagram and measuring the area ? [ ] vdP = hN, where v = specific volume, or by measuring the sum of all friction losses and work provided by a fan. These procedures are tedious. The natural ventilation head (hN) can be approximated by the equaticn hN =[ ] tdZ. Where T is the average absolute temperature, t air temperature and Z elevation. In Prof. R. Greuer&apos;s computer program this determination of hN is automatically done for every mesh of the network.

Since 1984, nitrogen-species catalyzed pressure leaching has been utilized at Sunshine Mining and Refining Company for the recovery of precious metals from a refractory sulfide concentrate. The process operates without the use of cyanide. The plant is now the only industrial-scale commercial application of this technology. Since the inception of the process, changes have been implemented to improve efficiencies and throughputs. Two of these changes, the replacement of nitric acid by sodium nitrite and a concentrate regrind, have recently been implemented. This paper discusses the development and potential mechanisms involved in these recently patented plant-process changes. A companion publication (Anderson et al., 1996) covers the plant integration and potential applicability of the technology.

INTRODUCTION As the world&apos;s supply of near-surface metalliferous ore bodies is depleted, more emphasis must be placed upon mechanized bulk systems of underground mining. In particular, block caving is becoming increasingly important as a method of mining low to moderate grade deposits at depths of somewhat less than 1219 m (4000 ft). 00 ft). The block caving method requires that the ore body be completely undercut, thereby removing its means of support and inducing failure which progresses from the undercut to the ground surface. As the span of the under- cut increases and the weight of the overlying crushed ore body becomes greater, large stresses are induced on slusher and haulage drifts. Stability of these drifts is critical in block caving operations and often proves to be an extremely difficult task (Kendorski, 1976; McWilliams, 1975). Slusher drift maintenance can be costly, often exceeding that of the original support costs. This chapter analyzes the ground support problems of an Arizona block caving mine. The mine presently uses monolithic concrete liners as a support method. Failure of the liners occurs as the undercut approaches, thus initiating a maintenance problem which will continue until the ore body is depleted in that block or panel. To examine this problem, a simple analysis of the stresses induced by the advancing undercut was per- formed. Utilizing a design method developed by Dixon ( 1973, 1974), the calculated stresses were used to deter- mine the minimum thickness required for varying section shapes of unreinforced concrete liners. It is found that the thicknesses required for stable linings are not economic. Recently developed empirical methods of support de- sign are utilized (Barton, 1974; Bieniawski, 1973) and compared to the analytical method. A final discussion of alternative methods of support is given with recommendations for the use of passive or "yielding" support methods. LAKESHORE MINE (GENERAL GEOLOGY) The Lakeshore copper property is located in Pinal County, AZ, approximately 45 km (28 miles) south of Casa Grande. The Lakeshore deposit is a porphyry cop- per similar to others in Arizona. The ore body consists of disseminated chalcopyrite and fracture fillings in quartz monzonite porphyry (QMP), Cretaceous volcanic (KVS), Precambrian diabase, and Mescal limestone. The ore body has been divided into three distinct zones of mineralization which have been termed (South, 1972) the oxide zone, the sulfide zone, and the tactite zone. The oxide zone occurs in the upper portions of the ore body and consists primarily of leached and oxidized quartz monzonite porphyry and Cretaceous sedimentary and volcanic rocks. The sulfide zone underlies the oxide zone and includes all quartz monzonite porphyry and Cretaceous rocks which have not been oxidized. The thickness of the sulfide zone is variable and ranges from about 61 to 122 m (200 to 400 ft). The tactite zone occurs in a series of Paleozoic metasediments consisting of tactite, quartzite, diabase, hornfels, and dikes of quartz monzonite porphyry. The tactite zone is highly variable in thickness and underlies the Cretaceous volcanic and sediments throughout the mine. Together, the tactite and sulfide zones are known as the thick or tall sulfides. The greatest support stability problems occur in mining of the tactite zone and are therefore the subject of the remainder of this chapter. Introduction In October 1983, Rio Algom Ltd. decided to develop the East Kemptville tin deposit. This decision was the result of intensive geological and metallurgical evaluation work, as well as careful studies of environmental and marketing aspects. The property is located about 54 km (34 miles) northeast of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, near the village of East Kemptville. Geology The geological setting is a granitic intrusive at the contact with metasediment. The tin mineralization is in the form of cassiterite (SnO2), which is about 80% tin. Sulfides are associated with the deposit containing silver, copper, and zinc, which are recoverable as byproducts. The mineralization is associated with quartz veins and greisen alteration. In the center of the deposit, the zones are so close together they have the appearance of a massive or porphyry type deposit. Ore Reserves The mine plan is based on 56 Mt (62 million st) at 0.165% tin. Up to the ninth year, mill feed will average about 0.2% and lower grade material will be stockpiled. In later years, the average grade will be 0.16% tin. A 0.08% cutoff grade is planned for the entire 17 years of production. East Kemptville is a relatively low grade tin deposit, and only a combination of favorable circumstances has made it economic. • The ore body is situated at, or very close to the surface, permitting mining by open-pit methods at a very low stripping ratio. • The tin occurs in relatively large crystals that allow for good recovery by gravity techniques. • It is ideally located in a well-settled area, with all essential infrastructural requirements already in place. • The positive and cooperative response from various governmental agencies involved are encouraging. Mine Plan The mine plan incorporates an initial pit, followed by three expansions to the ultimate pit. Mining will be at 14 kt/d (15,000 stpd) and will include 9 kt (10,000 st) of ore plus 5 kt (5,500 st) of waste and low grade. After five years, the mining rate will increase to 21 kt/d (27,500 stpd). It is planned to drill vertical 165-mm (6.5-in.) blast holes on a 6-x 6-m (20- x 20-ft) pattern. Bulk slurry explosives will be used to break the rock. Loading will be with hydraulic shovels into 70 t (77 st) haulage trucks. The trucks will deliver the ore to a 13 x 20 m (42 x 65 ft) gyratory crusher, where it will be crushed to 150 mm (6 in.). Secondary and tertiary cone crushers will be used to further crush the ore to 13 mm (0.5 in.). Process Design Tin extraction technology is practically unknown in North America, but Rio Tinto Zinc, which has a 53% ownership in Rio Algom, is involved in tin production in the UK. Rio Algom has used this experience and expertise in metallurgical evaluation work and in tin-related aspects of plant design. Mineralogical and metallurgical test work have been performed, both on laboratory and pilot plant scales. Mineralogical work was done largely in the UK, the laboratory test program was carried out at the Lakefield research facility in Ontario, and pilot plant work was conducted in Australia. This program has resulted in significant improvements in recovery and concentrate grades, over best projections that could be made before this work was carried out. Concentrating Process The concentrator is being designed to process about 9 kt/d (10,000 stpd). The first step is to reduce the size of the ore to -700 µm (-24 mesh) in a rod mill/ball mill grinding circuit. The ball mill will operate in closed circuit with high capacity banana-type screens.
