Coal macerals differ widely in their surface properties and in their hydrophobicities. Therefore, it is necessary to study the flotation time dependence of coal macerals using varying concentrations of various frothers and collectors. In the present study, froth flotation is used to explore the possibility of segregating coal macerals based on their relative rates of flotation. Petrographic analysis of the various macerals in the concentrate were carried out, and the results are expressed in terms of the recoveries of various maceral groups and mineral matter. Results show that it is possible to recover a good volume of the reactive macerals without mach loss of calorific value.

Each year, about 45 Mt (50 million st) of flotation tailings are discarded in Florida phosphate operations. These tailings only contain about 4% of the phosphate in the ore. However, more than half of the phosphate in the tailings is concentrated in the +600 µm (+28 mesh) size fraction at grades of up to 20% P205. Many phosphate producers have attempted to solve this problem by floating the +425 µm (+35 mesh) flotation feed separately. However, phosphate recoveries in these circuits are typically only 60%. For seven sampled phosphate operations, the phosphate content of the +600 µm (+28 mesh) fatty acid tailings ranged from 15% to 25% P205. In every case, the +600 µm (+28 mesh) fatty acid tailings was higher in grade than the overall flotation feed. Attempts to efficiently recover this coarse phosphate have apparently been unsuccessful at these seven phosphate operations. Recovery of this coarse phosphate would provide an additional 900 kt to 2.5 Mt (I to 2.7 million st) of phosphate annually and add an additional year to the reserves of these important deposits. A typical central Florida phosphate matrix is composed of three different mixtures of minerals. The +1.18 mm (+ 16 mesh) portion is chiefly phosphate pebbles and is beneficiated by sizing. The -106 µm (-150 mesh) portion contains virtually all of the clay minerals and is discarded in the hydrocyclone overflow. The -l mm +106 µm (-16 +150 mesh) material is a mixture of quartz and phosphate minerals.

Sol-gel processing is rapidly becoming an important process for producing such advanced materials as high activity catalysts, fiber optics and ceramic precursors. These materials can be tailor made with properties unique to sol particles as well as the gel aggregates by controlling production of the sol, the formation of the gel, and the removal of the interstitial fluids. This paper presents colloidal and kinetic principles of sol generation and gel formation. Hydrolysis of alkoxides provides the best means of controlling sol production and electrostatic stabilization enables the formation of the most homogeneous gels. Gelation occurs by hierarchial aggregation which produces inhomogeneities much larger than the sol particles. Colloidal and kinetic principles can be applied to reduce the size of the inhomogeneities and obtain high performance transparent insulation and new ceramic composites.

Various open pit limit-analysis techniques have been utilized for many years to design pit limit surfaces. In the last 15 years there have been many advances in developing sophisticated computer methods to aid this process. The extensive capability of the digital computer has led to effective utilization of multiple alternative approaches to problem solving. Computerized open pit limit analysis methods can be applied to a broad scope of long range and intermediate range mine planning and design needs. This paper provides an overview of some of the more important of these applications. While not covered in detail, they are meant to indicate the flexibility and adaptability of open pit limit analysis methods and to stimulate thought.

Outlined is a review of the application of new selective chelating reagents as flotation collectors; calculation methods for the selection of chelating structures, limitation of the function of commercial chelating agents as collectors, and the synthesis of two new classes of chelating collectors with mixed aliphatic-aromatic structure for oxidized lead-zinc ores. Given are: examples of substituted mercaptobenzothiazole and aminothiophenol structures, flotation and adsorption study of an alcoxyl-mercaptobenzothiazole on cerussite, comparison of adsorption of conventional and chelating collectors, study of the influence of the aliphatic structure1 component on the collecting power of chelating type reagent and the design of chelating collectors with optimal structure.

The large population base, complex geology of the large land mass, and notable commercial activity have accelerated the development of underground construction market in China. The projected lengths of underground openings per year in the various sectors are: hydro-tunnels, 180 km; coal mine entries, 40 km; transport-tunnels, 300+ km. An example of the mega projects (being planned by the Government) is the water supply scheme for connecting Yangtze river to Yellow river involving 131 km of water tunnels with a diameter of 8-10m. Several large projects are highlighted in the paper with reference to the schemes for generating hydro-power, mining of coal and minerals, and constructing transportation networks. The related problems of construction and geomechanics are outlined.

Due to the availability of user-friendly microcomputer based packages, the use of simulation is increasing.. Users have however encountered problems inherent to the structure of sequential-modular simulators. These are the difficulties associated with estimating parameters for arbitrary' models and the solution of design and optimization problems. The implementation of an optimization routine in the simulator MicroSim has facilitated the solution of such problems. The literature indicates that more efficient numerical techniques for solving optimization problems than those presently used in MicroSim are available. These techniques, together with user-interfaces which allow such problems to be specified easily by users, will result in the development of simulators much more powerful than existing ones.

INTRODUCTION Over the past several years, Ford, Bacon & Davis Utah Inc. (FB&DU) has been involved in research, development, and engineering activities concerning uranium mill tailings; specifically of interest in this paper are efforts in radon gas exhalation and surface flux attenuation measurements, environmental influences on radon fluxes, and basic research into radon gas behavior. Our projects have included measurements of effectiveness of specific cover material in attenuating radon surface fluxes from mill tailings, characterization of the parameters in cover materials and tailings that influence radon exhalation, long-term tailings stabilization planning, determination of the effects of moisture on radon emanation and diffusion from ores, and determinations of baseline radon fluxes. Our efforts have been sponsored by U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Tennessee Valley Authority, the commercial uranium industry, and we are presently engaged in efforts for the U.S. Bureau of Mines. Much of the material presented in this paper is taken from our published reports on radon flux attenuation and tailings stabilization (Macbeth et al., 1978; Nielson et al., 1980; Rogers et_ al., 1980; Thamer et al al., 1980). CHARACTERIZATION OF RADON GAS EXHALATION One dimensional diffusion theory based on Fick's laws is the basis for the modeling of radon gas migration through large quantities of porous tailings and cover materials applied over the large areas of tailings piles. INTRODUCTION Site characterization using oriented borehole core is the subject of this paper. Borehole core is a standard source of data for rock mechanics investigations. Oriented borehole core provides data whereby the geometric orientation of various geologic discontinuities (faults, joints, bedding, etc.) may be determined. The orientation and strength characteristics of discontinuities are important in many engineering investigations and in particular, in slope stability analyses. In heavily vegetated or soil covered situations, oriented borehole core may provide the only means of assessing the subsurface planes of weakness which characterize the site. The purpose of this paper is to briefly describe various methods or orienting core, core characteristics which may be logged and the methods of processing and using the data for site characterization.

Technical co-operation activities of the Department of Technical Co-operation for Development of the United Nations Secretariat have included the introduction of electronic data processing techniques in mineral sector projects for several years; computers have been provided to countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Advisory services are provided to interested developing countries at their request concerning applications for various uses in mineral sector activities. They include advice on appropriate hardware and software depending upon the requirements of the particular Government. The Department's activities in this area are described. The input from a Group of Experts on this subject convened by the United Nations, and their conclusions and recommendations, are also discussed.

Marine sedimentary deposits account for 80% and igneous deposits 17% of the total world output of phosphate rock. The phosphate mineral is well crystallized and exhibits a greater floatability in the igneous deposits than the sedimentary ores. Both silicates and carbonates contribute the major gangue associated with the sedimentary ores. Although removal of silica from sedimentary phosphates by froth flotation has been in practice for several decades, with the depletion of high-grade reserves, new attempts are being made to improve the efficiency of current silica removal technology and to develop new processes for beneficiation of phosphate ores associated with the carbonate gangue. In this paper, recent developments in processing of sedimentary phosphate ores containing carbonate and silica gangue are discussed.

This paper explains and discusses a computer program that has been developed to determine the ventilation design parameters for complex auxiliary ventilation systems such as those found in the construction of long excavations with multiple headings. The program is based on the principle of partitioning the system into segments of finite length, and formulating and solving the resulting networks recursively. The resulting network problems are solved analytically. With this program, the size of fans can be determined in order to reduce the total leakage and minimize the flow recirculation. The application of the program is illustrated by the detailed solution of an auxiliary ventilation system proposed for the Exploratory Studies Facility (ESF) at the Yucca Mountain Project, Nevada.

The advantages and disadvantages of various techniques available for controlling reagents in the mineral flotation systems are discussed. Special interest is placed on potentiometric and voltammetric sensors for monitoring flotation pulps. Different approaches to increase the sensitivity of detection and to facilitate in-stream monitoring of solution species are also discussed. The potentiometric sensors are simple to use but are limited by the availability of an electrode reversible to the species to be monitored. In some cases the response signal could be unreliable due to the presence of interfering species. In comparison, voltammetric sensors require a higher degree of instrumentation which, however, provides an opportunity to decrease interferences and increase levels of detection.

Newmont Gold has advantageously used the capabilities of mineral oxidizing bacteria to develop a process for the pretreatment of low-grade sulfidic and carbonaceous-sulfidic refractory gold ores. The biooxidation process results in the oxidation of the sulfidic minerals with increased exposure of gold for subsequent gold recovery. The biooxidized carbonaceous-sulfidic ores cannot be heap leached with cyanide because of the preg-robbing characteristics of the carbonaceous matter in the ores. Therefore, an alternative heapleach process using ammonium thiosulfate was developed to extract gold from these preg-robbing bioaxidized ores. The ammonium thiosulfate leach process was successfully applied in both laboratory and pilot plant tests. Satisfactory test results were achieved, encouraging the continuation of process development.

Investigations of bedrock within subsided areas over abandoned coal mines in Illinois reveal very little disturbance of the bedrock. In areas that have surface subsidence of 0.3 to 1 m (1 to 3.25 ft), examination of cores from exploration drilling and investigations of the boreholes by means of closed circuit television have shown that fractures are spaced at least 0.9 to 3.6 m (3 to 12 ft) apart. They are located within a zone 6 to 15 m (20 to 50 ft) above the collapsed area in coal mines 42.6 to 112.7 m (140 to 370 ft) deep. The dip of the fractures ranges from 25° to 60°, cutting across nearly horizontal sedimentary bedding planes. The amount of fracturing found in the collapsed area decreased as the amount of soft, weak materials increased in the immediate overburden of the mine.

The evaporative pan complex consists of two adjacent seasonal pans. These pans carry an exceptionally high salt (TDS) load due to over 50 years of effluent discharge via the pipeline from mines. The nutrient, heavy metal, radionuclide load in the water and sediments of the pans are very high affecting groundwater around the pans. The groundwater in the region contains TDS > 40 000 mgl-1 and sulphates > 7000 mgl-1, whereas groundwater in areas assumed to be unpolluted by mining activities have TDS < 500 mgl-1 and sulphates < 200 mgl-1. The extent of continuity between the pans and the groundwater is unknown, although there appears to be seepage of contaminated groundwater into the river system.

The Coal Mining Section of the National Safety Council has selected hand and finger injuries of coal miners as a major topic for safety policy analysis [Tinney, 19851. So that facts about hand and finger injuries can be used to guide the Committee&apos;s work and the work of policy-makers, we present in this paper detailed analyses of the following factors related to hand and finger injuries received by coal miners between 1975 and 1983: occupations of the injured miners; activities of the miners when injured; machines involved; objects, substances, exposures, or bodily motions that produced or inflicted the injuries; principal physical characteristics of injuries; and events directly resulting in the injuries. We analyze hand injuries for underground and surface mines separately because of the remarkably different production methods and hazards evident in these two operating environments. We do not, however, provide information about hand and finger injuries that occurred in surface operations at underground sites (such as yards, shops, or tipples), auger mining operations, culm banks, dredging operations, mill or preparation plants, offices, or laboratories. The most comprehensive information about the safety of coal mining in the United States is assembled by the Health and Safety Analysis Center (HSAC) of the Mine Safety and Health Administration of the United States Department of Labor. Mine operators in the United States report to HSAC all injuries as required under Part 50, Title 30, of the Code of Federal Regulations (mandated by Section 103 the Federal Mine Safety and Health Amendments Act of 1977, Public Law 95-164). These regulations stipulate that injuries must be reported within ten days of their occurrence on a United States government data collection form, Mine Accident, Illness and Injury Report (MSHA Form 7000-1). HSAC maintains these data primarily to produce federally-mandated reports. Introduction Engineering Health and Safety is concerned with the understanding of the complex interplay between the risk of injury with technological ,environmental, individual, organisational and legal factors. With this understanding, the design and decision making processes can be balanced with the other objectives of industry and employment to arrive at solutions which place appropriate controls on technology and other aspects of human activities to prevent disease and injury to personnel in the coal mining industry and the design of safe production machinery and ancillary equipment. Advances in the detection and diagnosis of causes of diseases and the need for engineering health and safety in the coal mining industry has increased the need for appropriate education and training. Hazards arise in many forms; exposure to toxic chemicals, escape of radio - active materials, explosion of pressure vessels, contact with moving machinery, exposure to dust, environmental dangers such as excessive noise, high temperatures and manual handling etc. As technology advances, these dangers become more complex and less clearly defined and less easily perceived. Consequently, the ways of controlling the dangers also become more complex and wide ranging. The need to educate and train people in coal mining applications of engineering health and safety has been enhanced over the last five years and courses should be established to fulfil the need for competent people to deal with the problems which modern coal mining technology creates together with the legislation that governs engineering health and safety and to carry out research and development work in the coal mining industry. Industrial Involvement The engineering health and safety experts must be prepared to take a more active part in monitoring conditions that exist in the mining industry, and not design from information obtained from the mechanical, electrical and hydraulic expertise and off-the-shelf components from other industries. Surveying and control of the operating environment must be essentially the concern of the engineering health and safety experts and, whilst it is not possible to create a perfect environment for each machine, every effort must be made to minimise failures and hence plan for designs which will maximise

"Based on the introduction of production technology of Anqian mining company, the stope ore mass distribution was analyzed in detail. The processability indexes of different grade ores were obtained with magnetic tube whereas the grinding time, concentrate grade and concentrate yield were measured. On the basis of digital ore deposit model which integrates ore natural attributes and processing attributes, two stages of ore blending optimization models were established. The first stage model sought the minimum of stope ore transportation cost under the restraints of output ore grade and stope production. The second stage was a system optional model that aimed at the furthest use of resources meeting not only the production constraints of mining field and process field but also ore beneficiability and the system output requirements of the concentrate grade. Lastly, the solving method of big M simplex algorithm was discussed and used in production. 1. Foreword China is the biggest iron ore consumption market. But most of iron ore deposits in china possess such features as low grade, complex compositions, weak magneticity and refractoriness. Under the current economic and technical conditions, rational utilization of low-grade and refractory iron ore is strongly needed to improve the utilization ratio of mineral resources and keep mine development sustainable (Lei 2011). In recent years, the domestic research institutions and mines made a lot of achievements of rational development and utilization of low grade iron ore resources in the beneficiation technology and equipment, high and low grade balance, cost and tax analysis (Wang and Zhao 2013, Zhang 2014, Zhu and Li 2014), laying the foundation for reasonable utilization of low grade iron ore. In this paper, Anqian mining company is taken as an example in which the production conditions, raw ore quality control, different grade of ore processability, and ore blending optimization mode in mining pit and processing plant were discussed to achieve the maximum utilization of low-grade refractory ores under the economical and reasonable conditions. This will ensure the stable operation of mining joint ventures and maximize the enterprise's production life and therefore, maximize the economic and social benefits in the enterprise life cycle."

Many times during the construction of a project, whether large or small, the engineer will become involved with management of the work and workforce. In some cases, mine management will turn over the direction and responsibility of doing the work to the engineer. Because of this, it is important to know some of the basic principles of human resource applications- among other management concerns. This chapter, therefore, looks at the fundamental principles of human resource management. Three broad discussions are presented to the reader. These are: (1) organization, communications, and responsibilities of management; (2) analysis of worker motivation; and (3) supervisory leadership. Each topic encompasses the current thinking for coal mining and mining management. Much of the information in this chapter comes from Practical Coal Mine Management, by this author and published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc., which discusses in depth many of the ideas presented here.
