A detailed fundamental study has been made of the various factors that influence the partial reactions comprising the electrochemical model of the cementation of gold from cyanide solutions by zinc. The effects of cyanide concentration, pH, agitation, additions of lead, and the presence of various impurity ions on both the anodic dissolution of zinc and the cathodic reduction of gold have been investigated. The results are used to explain the influence of these variables on the rate of cementation, and possible implications of this work for plant practice are discussed.

During the past two to three years, there have been some significant Improvements to the quality of the support systems being used on South African gold mines, and the Implementation of these new developments, together with more worker awareness has been instrumental in reducing rock-related accidents, particularly in deep mines. This paper provides guidelines to mine and group personnel on how to monitor the ongoing Implementation of new technologies and so ensure the benefits that will accrue in terms of mine safety and profitability. Particular attention is given to the establishment of auditing procedures that will enable management to assess the benefits obtained from new technologies, as well as providing Improved maintenance procedures and procedures for the optimum utilization of seismic data. The areas that receive most attention include support systems for stopes and tunnels, such as hydraulic props, backfill, and rockburst-resistant tunnel support; stope and regional support layouts; mine standards; and staffing of the rock-engineering department. The problem of heat stress underground in the gold mines is approached on the basis of the heat transfer between the human body and the underground environment. Experimental measurements of radiant and convective heat transfer and a theoretical calculation of maximum evaporative heat transfer enable the maximum cooling power of an environment to be calculated in terms of the dry-bulb and wet-bulb temperature, the mean radiant temperature, the wind speed and the barometric pressure. For most underground applications the cooling power can be expressed as a function of wet-bulb temperature and wind speed only. The relative importance of wind speed and wet-bulb temperature can be assessed: in working places where wind speed is low additional cooling of workmen can be achieved better by increased wind speed than by decreased wet-bulb temperature. The wet kata reading proves to be of limited value as an index of heat stress because environments with equal wet kata do not necessarily have the same cooling power. Finally, thermal equilibrium with the environment is possible when cooling power equals or exceeds the rate of metabolic heat generation. The rates of metabolic heat generation for various underground tasks are indicated.

The following notes have been compiled to assist authors in the preparation of papers for presentation to the Institute and for publication in the Journal. All papers must meet the standards set by the Council of the Institute, and for this purpose all papers are referred to at least two referees appointed by the Council. Although the worldwide readership of the Journal results in a preference for papers in English, the Council treats papers in Afrikaans on an equal basis, but, to meet the needs of the majority of readers, an English summary of some 5OO to 750 words should be provided.

An account is given of the procedures used by the South African Iron and Steel Industrial Corporation (Iscor) for tests on the flotation of coal fines, and some of the beneficiation problems encountered with coal from Durnacol, Grootegeluk, and the Soutpansberg area are discussed. These, and other South African coals differ from overseas coals in that they contain a high percentage of fixed ash, which means that they have to be crushed more finely for liberation and that they then contain more fine material (smaller than 0,84 mm). In addition, the coal from the three areas mentioned occurs in fine layers and seams, and contains many intergrown particles.

An account is given of the planning required for the rehabilitation of land that is to be disturbed by opencast mining, and of the preparation of rehabilitation of land that is to the Inspector of Mines. The plans Include the provisions that are to be made to allow for climatic conditions, land use, vegetation and wildlife, surface-water resources, geology and ground water, soils, land capability, rehabilitation method, location of discard dumps and slurry ponds, pollution control, and costs. . . Monitoring of the operation is the only way that the rehabilitation plan can be improved, and both monitoring and planning are essential when provision is being made for the closure of a mine.

The two main branches of viscometry (rotational and tube) for the measurement of mining slimes rheology are compared. The effects of solids concentration, particle size and chemical additives and the practical application of rheology in backfill system design are presented.

The production of electrolytic manganese in South Africa by M. HARRIS, Pr. Eng., B.Se. (Eng.) (Fellow), D. M. MEYER, Pr. Eng., B.Se. (Meeh. Eng.) (Visitor), and K. AUERSWALD (Visitor) The decision to construct the first electrolytic manganese plant in South Africa was important and farreaching. After evaluating the results of the pilot plant operation, the first South African producer, Electrolytic Metal Corporation (Emcor), established a plant in Krugersdorp. Initially, there were many process problems that had to be InvestIgated, and, after these had been solved and many operating parameters had been established, manganese was successfully produced. When the Delta Manganese plant in Nelspruit was planned, cognizance was taken of the fact that, if peak efficiencies were to be maintained, the process must be operated between fairly narrow parameters. Instrumentation was therefore installed to control the process automatically wherever possible. The main features of the Delta Manganese operation are outlined, with a brief description of each stage of the process from ore milling through to electrowinning and packing of the metal. It is concluded that much benefit can be obtained from further research work into process improvements and into the exact effect of certain variables on plant and current efficiency.

Shear-thickening suspensions abound throughout the hydraulic conveying industry; at least this is the perception of many engineers running plants where hydraulic conveying is commonplace. In reality, shear thickening behaviour is limited, in the main, to high concentrations of fine particles, including colloidal and biological suspensions, at moderate to high shear rates. In the authors? experience most cases of shear-thickening behaviour have been either simple ?coarse? particle interactions, poor instrumentation techniques, or both. In some cases these were obviously heterogeneous flows, while in others flows that were homogenous, or were thought to be homogenous. Examples, which illustrate this erroneous perception are given. However, the trend towards pastes and complex suspensions that use high concentration carrier fluids means that the underlying slurries for many of these flows may now be truly shear-thickening. Unfortunately, suspensions that might exhibit shear thickening also invariably exhibit slip, or wall-particle depletion. These separate phenomena are difficult to resolve experimentally and many observations of apparent shear-thickening behaviour are in fact obscured or convoluted by slip effects. A method is presented whereby the true flow properties of these high concentration suspensions, and hence accurate prediction of pipeline flows, can be made using a parallel plate rheometer.

"In a technologically advanced era, where process control is accurately maintained within the smallest error margins, and accuracy and precision are continuously improved, sampling is still left to the lowest paid employee in the company without training him or her properly to understand the relevance and importance of the task. In this paper the objectives of sampling in a process control environment is discussed and an attempt is made to link it to the theory of sampling. Some of the practical problems associated with implementing theoretical sampling principles in an industrial environment will be elucidated and some examples given on how compromises are made. Different methods of sampling will be discussed with real life examples from different manufacturing industries."

The auriferous Carbon Leader reef which is the subject of this study can be subdivided into two types of sedimentological units, each with its characteristic spatial variability. For the longwall mining method applied at Western Deep Levels gold mine, subdivision of the orebody improves the estimation of the actual error variance, but not the grade estimates themselves. This can only be achieved by choosing oreblocks of a size and shape that are maximal parallel to the longwall and minimal at right angles to it, within the limits of mining restrictions. While simple kriging is the only method that gives unbiased results, the difference between untransformed and logtransformed kriging is negligible.

SYNOPSIS The phase equilibria, viscosities and sulphur capacities of titaniferous slags were determined in the composition range of CaO = 30 to 0 per cent, MgO = 0 to 30 per cent, SiO2 = 19.69 per cent, AI.O. = 13.12 per cent and TiO2 = 37.19 per cent. The phase equilibria were determined by high temperature microscopy, the viscosities were measured using a rotating outer cylinder viscometer and the sulphur capacities were evaluated from the results obtained by equilibrating the slag in a gas stream of CO, CO2 and SO2. The behaviour of these titaniferous slags under reducing conditions was examined. Possible use of the slags for aggregate, or slag-cement, and the possibility of extracting the TiO2 are discussed. These titaniferous magnetites occur as segregations in the gabbro body and the TiO2 is mainly present within the structure of other constituent minerals but also occurs in smaller amounts as ilmenite and ulvospinel. The vanadium is thought to be present in the iron oxide phase due to isomorphous replacement of the iron. Until very recently, it was feared that the high titania content of these titaniferous magnetites would militate against their value as useful iron ores. The assessment of the stability performance of open pit highwalls has traditionally been based on consideration of surface movement rates. Although generally accepted in industry, this approach presents challenges for establishing appropriate threshold values to allow for safe mining operations and does not address the issue of total strain. Surface movement monitoring data from a limited number of open pit mining operations in North and South America has been evaluated in terms of highwall strain, rock mass quality and inferred mechanism of instability. Threshold strain levels for key stages of highwall stability proposed from previous work has been reviewed and are endorsed based on evaluation of additional data. An empirical highwall strain criteria for the assessment of highwall stability performance is postulated based on relatively consistent trends in highwall strain data. L’évaluation du niveau de stabilité des hauts murs de carrières a traditionnellement été basée sur les taux de mouvements de surfaces. Bien que cette approche soit généralement acceptée à travers l’industrie, elle présente des défis pour la définition de seuils appropriés concernant la sécurité des opérations minières et n’adresse pas la notion de déformations totales. Des données de mouvements de surface provenant d’un nombre limité d’opérations minières à ciel ouvert d’Amérique du Nord et du Sud ont été évaluées en terme de déformation des hauts murs, de qualité de la masse rocheuse et des mécanismes inférés d’instabilité. Des seuils de déformation pour différentes phases clefs de stabilité de hauts murs ont été revus et sont endossés, basé sur l'évaluation de donnés additionnelles. Un critère de déformation empirique pour l’évaluation de la stabilité des hauts murs est postulé, basé sur des tendances relativement consistantes de données de déformations de hauts murs. Die Beurteilung der Stabilität von hohen Felsböschungen basiert traditionellerweise von Oberflächenbewegungen. Obwohl dieses Verfahren im Allgemeinen akzeptiert wird, stellt es jedoch gewisse Probleme für die Festlegung von Grenzwerten für die Sicherheit dar. Die totalen Dehnungen werden bei dieser Betrachtungsweise vernachlässigt. Eine beschränkte Anzahl von Oberflächenbewegungs Daten von Bergbauwerke in Nord- und Südamerika sind in Bezug auf die Dehnungen von hohen Felsböschungen, Felsqualität und davon abgeleiteten Bruchmechanismen untersucht worden. Grenzwerte für die Belastung von hohen Felsböschungen während den massgebenden Bauetappen aus bisherigen Projekten sind begutachtet und durch zusätzliche Untersuchungen bestätigt worden. Gestützt auf relativ konsitenten Trends, ist hier ein empirisches Verfahren der Dehnungen in hohen Felsböschungen zur Beurteilung der Stabilität vorgestellt.
