The in-service degradation of the mechanical properties of steel components through the damage mechanism of high temperature hydrogen attack (HTHA), is a topic of concern in the refining and green hydrogen industry. This damage mechanism occurs in susceptible steels operating in environments at high temperatures and hydrogen pressures. The current investigation deals with the indirect monitoring of mechanical degradation via tracking of the swelling strain in affected structures. An autoclave with an AISI 316 shell was utilized to simulate accelerated HTHA damage at 550 °C and 46 bar for exposure times ranging from zero to 700 hours. The progress of the HTHA damage was tracked using encapsulated high-temperature strain gauges. The correlation between the swelling strain and mechanical property degradation was studied to develop a methodology for the continuous monitoring of embrittlement. The tensile sample orientation of the carbon steel plate was included as a variable, i.e., samples parallel, transverse, or perpendicular to the plate rolling direction were included, since it has been shown that the sample orientation influences the HTHA damage features. For the through-thickness orientation, and upon exceeding a threshold value of exposure time, all tensile properties were severely degraded, with values in the order of a 90 per cent reduction being observed. It was found that the degradation of carbon steel mechanical properties can be correlated to the swelling strain measured during exposure. The critical point for mechanical property degradation in the plate through-thickness orientation, whereafter a severe decrease in the ductility of the material occurs, was found to be in the order of 1% of the total swelling strain measured during exposure, equivalent to 65 microstrain. This threshold was found to be significantly lower than that expected from the literature, where limits of 400 to 1000 microstrain were postulated.

Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is the particulate component of diesel exhaust, which includes diesel soot and aerosols. When released into the atmosphere, DPM can take the form of individual particles or chain aggregates, with most in the invisible sub-micrometer range of 100 nanometres. The main particulate fraction of diesel exhaust consists of fine particles and because of their small size, inhaled particles may easily penetrate deep into the lungs. The rough surfaces of these particles make it easy for them to bind with other toxins in the environment, thus increasing the hazards of particle inhalation. DPM is a significant health hazard in underground mining operations, where the use of dieselpowered equipment in confined spaces can lead to high levels of exposure among people working in these environments. Classified as a carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), DPM has been linked to severe health effects, including respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, as well as an increased risk of lung cancer. Effective management of DPM is essential not only for protecting people’s health but also for ensuring regulatory compliance, maintaining operational efficiency, and safeguarding the long-term viability of mining companies.

Refractory gold-containing concentrates usually contain gold enclosed in sulphides as well as in rock-forming minerals. Another difficulty is that gold often occurs as very fine inclusions of several micrometres, and even smaller than 1 micrometre, or can be part of the mineral composition at the structure level. Processing of such concentrates is a challenge. Ultrafine grinding and further oxidation are applied for gold liberation. The paper deals with the results from the study of gold deportment using Qemscan, and atmospheric oxidation testwork involving Albion Process™ on a gold-containing concentrate with a high content of refractory gold in sulphides and gangue minerals. Albion process testing was performed at Institute TOMS with the participation of Glencore Technology Pty Ltd (Australia). Additionally, conventional cyanidation testwork was carried out for the concentrate processing. As an alternative technology of gold liberation, oxidising roasting with arsenic stabilisation was used. The results from the study make it possible to assess the efficiency of the above-mentioned methods of gold liberation, and applicability of Albion technology to recover gold from the refractory concentrate. For resources projects with healthy net present value (NPV) and low cash flow volatility, conventional discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis will continue to provide the dominant investment decision-making criteria. However, DCF analysis can be biased because it often applies a single risk-adjusted discount rate (RADR) to compare the value of projects with different risk characteristics. Many of the difficulties with DCF modelling arise from analysts' inability to determine appropriate risk discounts and to estimate expected spot prices inputs for the commodities produced over the life of the project. Modern asset pricing (MAP) is a very valuable complement to DCF analysis in addressing some of these issues. Most papers dealing with MAP, however, while academically rigorous, tend not to be explicit in terms of practical application of this methodology in routine project evaluation. This paper has the objective of reviewing the MAP methodology and of demystifying its complexity, by providing a simple but realistic step-by-step evaluation of a mining project, comparing its DCF and MAP NPV values. The paper concludes that MAP provides a minimum, risk-adjusted `floor' value, thus representing a valuable complement to any DCF valuation.

The presence of fines (particles smaller than 6 mm in diameter) causes hydrodynamic problems in gasifiers and therefore it is of great importance to minimize the amount of fine coal in the feed. This serves as motivation for understanding coal?s breakage mechanisms, which could lead to the ability to predict the generation of fines. The aim of this project was to simulate the pulsating effect of the conveyor belt in order to investigate factors influencing the breakage. Results indicated that an increased initial particle size had an increasing effect in the amount of fines generated. Weathering had an insignificant effect on the breakage of coal. To conclude, a breakage model was developed to describe the rate of breakage out of the top size when a combination of two breakage modes is present.

The effects were studied of the presence of comminuted flint on the rheological characteristics of chalk slurry pumped through a 92-km long pipeline from Kensworth Quarry to Rugby Cement Works in the UK, and their impact on the pipe flow conditions. Flow curves were measured for 63different chalk slurry samples; these were described by the Bingham plastic model. In addition to observing trends in the yield stress parameter and plastic viscosity in the model with variations in both flint concentration and dispersant additive, use was also made of slurry viscosity values at a reference shear rate of 60 s-1for the pipe flow. It was found that chalk slurry viscosity decreases with increasing flint content up to 10% by weight for a given additive concentration, and increases with increasing additive concentration from 0.7 to 1.0%, for a given flint content. The pipeline flow regimes were identified using the critical value of the Bingham Reynolds number for laminar flow breakdown. For Bench 11 (quarry bottom) chalk slurries, it was observed that all sections of the pipeline operate in the turbulent flow regime for the nine different formulations and for the three pipe diameters used along the pipeline. However, this was not always the case for Bench 1(quarry top) slurries. It was therefore recommended that chalk slurries prepared from Bench 1 should not be used because of the strong likelihood that laminar flow conditions will occur owing to the presence of higher clay concentrations within this bench. This, in turn, will lead to an unsafe operation of the pipeline because of the potential for coarse particle settling. Likewise, blending of chalk from Bench 1 with the lower benches such as Bench 11 could be problematic and this requires further experimentation.

The customized system developed by Siemens especially for bulk material handling applications enables companies to track bulk material from the mine to the harbor, to the steel mill or to the power plant. All relevant material data is available at every single step of the material’s journey. SILAG is an open, scalable system based on Windows NT / 2000. Using standard interfaces of Windows NT, like API, ODBC, SQL and socket technology, the system is very flexible and can easily be tailored to meet different requirements. SILAG can be used as a stand-alone solution or - if complete plant control and visualization is required - as a component of a fully integrated automation system with the Win CC HMI system and the PCS7 process control. In contrast to conventional material tracking systems, SILAG offers many advantages. - The Material Tracking System is an object oriented, online to the process, linked system. All changes in the plant during operation e.g. selecting another conveyor route, start and stop etc. will be automatically detected and will influence the calculation. - The systems is able to split and blend material (quantity and quality).Measurements of tonnage, volume or quality analysis can be linked online to the system. Each movement of material is monitored by the system and leads to online recalculations of the images and databases. - All material data is based on 3D-stockpile images, which are calculated by an internal mathematical model based on quantity and quality information. - If a laser scanner is available on a stockyard machine it can be taken to update the profile directly from the piles. - Efficient control and report functions are available on each, free selectable point of the total plant.

This study is concerned with the electric potential induced by deformation, fracturing and sliding of non-piezoelectric geomaterials. In experiments, the acoustic emissions together with electric potential measurements were also measured in order to see how the so-called seismic electric signals are associated with new fracture occurrence and propagation and sliding in case of existing discontinuities. The outcomes of this experimental study may explain why such electric potential variations may occur during the fracturing and sliding of non-piezoelectric geomaterials. On the basis of these outcomes, their possible implications in geo-engineering and geo-science are discussed. Ce travail concerne 1e potentiel électrique produit par la déformation, 1a fracture ou le glissement du matériel géologique non-piézoélectrique. Aux expérimentations, on a mesuré 1es émissions acoustiques avec le potentiel électrique afin de constater la relation entre les phénomènes de glissement ou de formation et de propagation de nouvelles fractures le long des discontinuités existantes. Les résultats de ce travail expérimental expliquent pourquoi de telles variations de potentiel electrique se produisent durant le glissement ou la fracture du matériel non-piézoélectrique. Sur la base de ces résultats, on a discuté de leurs éventuelles implications dans les domaines de 1a géologie et de 1a géo-ingénierie. Diese Studie befasst sich mit dem elektrischen Potential das durch die Deformation, Bruchbildung und Gleiten von nicht-piezoelektrischen Geomaterialien induziert wird. In Experimenten wurden die akustischen Emissionen zusammen mit elektrischen Potentialmessungen gemessen, um zu sehen, wie die so genannten seismischen elektrischen Signale mit neuer Bruchbildung und Ausbreitung sowie Gleiten im Falle von vorhandenen Diskontinuitäten verbunden sind. Die Ergebnisse dieser experimentellen Untersuchungen könnten erklären warum elektrische Potential Schwankungen während der Bruchbildung und dem Gleiten von nicht-piezoelektrischen Geomaterialien entstehen. Auf der Basis dieser Ergebnisse, wurden ihre möglichen Implikationen in Geoingenieurwissenschaften behandelt.

This paper summarizes work carried out on the treatment of fine coal, nominally classified as minus 0,5 mm (wedge-wire screen), which is removed from the raw coal prior to the treatment of the plus 0,5 mm sizes. The minus 0,5 mm coal divides, for treatment purposes, into fines, nominally between 500 and 150 !tm, and ultrafines, nominally minus 150 !tm. Studies on processes for the treatment of minus 0,5 mm coal are discussed, and the lower size limit beneficiated is indicated for each process. The installation and operational results from a pilot froth-flotation plant treating minus 150!tm coal are described.

An engineering house?s perspective of required inputs in designing a copper electrowinning tank house and ancillary equipment calls for both understanding of the key fundamental controlling mechanisms and the practical requirements to optimize cost, schedule and product quality. For direct or post solvent extraction copper electrowinning design, key theoretical considerations include current density and efficiency, electrolyte ion concentrations, cell voltages and electrode over potentials, physical cell dimensions, cell flow rates and electrode face velocities, and electrolyte temperature. Practical considerations for optimal project goals are location of plant, layout of tank house and ancillary equipment, elevations, type of cell furniture, required cathode quality, number and type of cells, material of construction of cells, structure and interconnecting equipment, production cycles, anode and cathode material of construction and dimensions, cathode stripping philosophy, plating aids, acid mist management, piping layouts, standard electrical equipment sizes, electrolyte filtration, impurity concentrations, bus bar and rectifier/transformer design, electrical isolation protection, crane management, sampling and quality control management, staffing skills and client expectations. All of the above are required to produce an engineered product that can be designed easily, constructed quickly and operated with flexibility.

Ausmelt Top Submerged Lancing (TSL) Technology has gained widespread commercial acceptance in the lead and zinc industries, as an efficient and highly flexible pyrometallurgical reactor with accompanying excellent environmental performance. For the processing of lead and zinc bearing feed materials twenty one (21) Ausmelt furnaces are now in operation, under design or under construction. With recent increases in the value of both lead and zinc and an ever increasing focus on the sustainable use of resources, interest in the processing of secondary feed material sources as well as metal containing residues has substantially increased. Ausmelt Technology has proven to be well suited to the economic recovery of values from such sources. This has for example culminated in Ausmelt?s commitment to the Whyalla Zinc project as the owner/operator of a facility for the treatment of zinc bearing secondary feeds. This paper describes Ausmelt?s recent developments in the fields of lead and zinc processing, as well as further investigations into new processing areas, including the direct smelting of zinc concentrates. Ausmelt?s TSL Technology can now be regarded as Best Available Technology (BAT) for metal production.

Professor G.T. van Rooyen has guided the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering at the University of Pretoria in South Africa for the past 32 years. During this period, 54 masters' degrees have been awarded in the Department, and 17 doctorandi promoted. He has also made a major contribution to industry by his incisive analysis, relevant and practical synthesis, and his exceptional talent in innovative design. He is still active in fracture analysis, thermal fatigue, weld simulation transformation kinetics, and fracture mechanics, and continues to contribute to a better understanding of metallurgical problems encountered in practice. He has advised many companies, and has received many honours and recognitions.

An investigation was conducted into the reactions between the slag system MnO-CaO-MgO-SiO2(AI2O3) and the alloy system Mn-Fe-Si-(C). Synthetic slags representative of plant melts and a plant alloy were reacted in alumina crucibles at temperatures of 1400°C, 1450°C, 1550°C, and 1600°C. In similar experiments, slags were used that comprised a South African manganese ore with various amounts of lime and several synthetic alloys with various silicon contents and manganese-to-iron ratios. These experiments were conducted in a vertical molybdenum-wound resistance furnace with full temperature control. Slag-to-alloy ratios were also varied during the tests. The rate of reduction of Mn.O3 and the MnO from the slag by the silicon in the alloy was extremely rapid, most of the reaction being completed within five minutes. The strongly exothermic nature of the reaction resulted in considerable generation of heat at the slag-alloy interface, causing convectional stirring of the contents of the crucible and promoting the rate of reaction. Equilibrium was usually attained after fifteen minutes. The major limitation governing the recovery of manganese is the need for the silicon content of the alloy to meet a maximum specification of 2 per cent. Higher concentrations of silicon in the final alloy of between 8 and 12 per cent favour good recoveries of manganese from the slag, but, since such an alloy is not salable, lower recoveries must apparently be tolerated. In alloys of 2 per cent silicon, low activities of the silicon are responsible for poor recoveries of manganese. The activity of MnO in the slag can be increased by moderate additions of CaO and small amounts of MgO, i.e., by an increase in the basicity of the slag.

Conventional PGM matte smelting requires the presence of a certain quantity of base metal sulphides in order to collect the platinum group metals in a molten sulphidic matte phase in the furnace. Furthermore, the quantity of chromium oxide in the feed materials is controlled in order to avoid the build-up of high-melting chromite spinels in the furnace. Mintek has developed a process for smelting difficult PGM-containing feed materials that contain low amounts of sulphur and/or high amounts of chromium oxide. A DC arc furnace is used to provide the appropriate conditions to generate an iron alloy that collects PGMs very effectively, leaving extremely low residual quantities of PGMs in the slag. Various feed materials have been treated successfully in furnace campaigns running at power levels up to 1.5 MW. The longest of these campaigns was run continuously for more than four months, treating more than two thousand tons of materials such as low-grade concentrates, revert tailings, and converter slag. The campaigns demonstrated the robustness and versatility of the process, and proved that it is possible to sustainably produce a PGM-containing alloy and discardable slags containing an average of less than 1.4 g/t of PGMs over the entire campaign. FeCo alloys play an important role in soft magnetic materials with a wide range of technological applications due to their high saturation magnetization and Curie temperature. However, these alloys have low ductility at room temperature. The ductility can be improved by the ternary addition of elements such as V. A density functional theory supercell approach was used to generate B2 Fe50Co50-xVx (0 ≤ x ≤ 50) structures and the properties were evaluated at different atomic percentage compositions to determine the ductility at room temperature. The structures were fully optimized to obtain better equilibrium ground-state properties such as lattice parameters and thermodynamic properties for both binary and ternary systems. The stability of Fe50Co50- xVx was evaluated from the heats of formation, elastic properties, and phonon dispersion curves. Furthermore, magnetic strength was evaluated from magnetic moments. It was found that all structures are thermodynamically stable due to the negative heats of formation. The calculated Pugh’s ratio and Poisson’s ratio confirm that alloying with V effectively improved the ductility. It was also found that Fe50Co50-xVx showed a positive shear modulus for the entire concentration range investigated, in agreement with phonon dispersion curves. The ternary addition of V to the FeCo system resulted in reduced magnetic strength due to a decrease in magnetic moments. These findings reveal that B2 FeCo-V alloys can be used as components and actuators for the automotive industry.

Currently lead nitrate is used as the recommended activator in Au-Sb flotation. However, due to high levels of hazard, the application of lead nitrate constitutes a potential risk for human health and ecosystems. To mitigate the harmful impact of activators on the environment, further research on activation by alternative reagents has been launched to promote the efficiency of antimony ores. In the present study, adsorption of lead, copper and zinc cations has been investigated by nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR), which has revealed copper and zinc cations penetration into the mineral lattice, although lead cations remain adsorbed on the mineral surface. However, the combination of zinc and copper cations leads to preferential volumetric adsorption of zinc in the mineral lattice and further surface adsorption of copper which positively affects the activation process. It has been established that activation of stibnite can be achieved effectively with the mixture of Cu2+:Zn2+=1:1 as much as with lead cations in antimony ore flotation. As a part of this work, the computational modelling has been used in prognosis of reagent activity evaluation (PRAE) for stibnite and aurostibite flotation by sulfhydryl collectors. The lower PRAE value the stronger the ability of a collector to form a stable complex with a mineral. PRAE has shown a strong negative trend to complex formation on the mineral surface of aurostibite and stibnite. Based on these studies, several collectors have been proposed for effective flotation. To verify the feasibility of proposed collectors tetramethyl (ethyl) thiuram disulfides (TMTD and TETD) have been used for flotation of stibnite, sphalerite, pyrite and arsenopyrite. Flotation performance has been improved significantly with TMTD that allows the avoidance of lead nitrate application and increases the recovery of antimony by 8,16%. "Centre de Morphologie MathématiqueSpecial problems arise in the evaluation of lateritic-type orebodies (Ni-Co, bauxite) or, more generally, orebodies affected by surface weathering. In this type of orebody, the vertical grade distribution shows, from the hangingwall downwards, a systematic increase followed sometimes by a certain decrease, or vice-versa. These trends appear together with irregular variations from one drill bole to the other.The problem is to characterize a vertical structure that is representative not only of the drill hole but of an entire panel or zone of influence, in order to define mineable thicknesses for given cut-off grades. The vertical grade distribution observed on the drillhole is replaced by a new curve, called 'derive' (drift), which is computed by 'universal kriging'.Once the vertical study is completed, new 'service-variables' are defined in the horizontal plane, such as mineable thickness and the corresponding average grade, economical functions (combination of the grades of several minerals). The local and global estimation of these variables can then be performed by a simple bi-dimensional kriging plan. The global estimation is summed up by several tonnage-cut-off grade curves.The practical valuation according to the above scheme of a New Caledonian lateritic nickel orebody is presented."

The coordination compound tetrakis(1,3-diphenyl-1,3-propanediona to)zirconium(IV), [Zr(DBM)4], (DBM = dibenzoyl methane/1,3- diphenyl-1,3-propanedionol) was synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. [Zr(DBM)4] crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c (a = 24.769(4) Å, b = 10.216(5) Å, c = 19.314(4) Å, and = 101.541(5)°). The coordination geometry around the zirconium atom, formed by the eight O-donating atoms of the four -diketonates, is found to be a near-perfect square antiprism. Crystal packing is stabilized by C?H... interactions throughout the crystal lattice. This structure is a noteworthy example of the application of ambient condition synthesis of zirconium compounds in N,N'-dimethylformamide (DMF) as reaction and crystallization solvent, highlighting the possibilities of aerobic condition metal purification through chelation.

Hydrocyclones are the most commonly used classifiers in the mining industry. The reason for this is their low operating cost and a small footprint. Data from plant trials where screens replaced hydrocyclones indicated that lower bypass of fines and sharper separation could improve breakage rates, with a positive effect on flotation circuit performance throughput. Despite the importance of classification, hydrocyclones have not received as much attention as more expensive comminution units, and their technological progress has been incremental. Noticeable water split (Rf) reductions of a semi-inverted hydrocyclone have been reported in the past. According to theory, the hydrocyclone with reduced Rf will improve classification of fines. A classification study using semi-inverted hydrocyclones was conducted to determine if a hydrocyclone could be operated in a way that would minimise misclassified fines. The classification performance of a semi-inverted hydrocyclone will be presented in this paper and other potential applications will be discussed.
