The Zinifex Century Mine employs a large number of Detritor mills for fine and ultra-fine grinding to liberate silica and sphalerite at 80 per cent passing 7.5 microns before final zinc flotation. A joint project between CSIRO Minerals and the Zinifex Century Mine was carried out to evaluate the Detritor mill performance. Plant surveys were conducted around the Detritors in conjunction with laboratory tests. The survey data showed that the Detritors in the ultra-fine milling circuit performed well. They reduced a feed F80 sizing of 46 microns to a product P80 sizing of 7.5 microns at a gross energy consumption of 37.2 kWh/t. Scale-up of ultra-fine milling Detritors was studied using a 0.55 kW laboratory batch unit and a 355 kW full-scale Detritor by processing Century zinc concentrate with 1 mm sand media. The results indicated that the 0.55 kW laboratory mill underestimated the energy consumption of the full-scale Detritor by about 20 per cent for a product P80 of seven microns. The performances of a horizontal IsaMill and a vertical Detritor were compared as ultra-fine milling devices for processing Century zinc concentrate. The experimental data demonstrated that, when using the same grinding media, the energy efficiency of the two mills is similar despite the difference in mill designs. The Detritors used for regrind duty at the Century Mine performed poorly when processing feed at 80 per cent passing 88 micron. The energy consumption was high and the product size distribution was broad with particles above 100 microns in the feed unbroken and particles below ten microns overground. A coarser ceramic media of 3 mm was therefore tested in a laboratory Detritor to process the regrind Detritor feed as an alternative to the 1 mm Colorado sand used at the Century Mine. The ceramic media reduced the energy consumption significantly and produced a narrower product size distribution, which is more desirable for the downstream flotation process.

How this simple plant generates a large revenue stream. The concept behind the Tailings Scavenging Plant (TSP) is simple: it is a non-complicated modular plant which is designed to be more stable than upstream plants. This, plus the use of ?high energy?, enables the plant to recover any metal missed by the upstream operation. Impala Platinum?Mineral process started pilot plant exercises in June 2003. The pilot plant ran for one year before the capital for the full-scale plant was approved. This year was used to motivate, design and cost a full-scale plant. The metal produced during the pilot and feasibility study enabled this part of the project to run at a small profit. The scale-up to full-scale was relatively simple as the pilot plant had a capacity of 180 m3/hrand the full-scale plant was designed for a capacity of 550 m3/h. The design for the full scale plant was completed in May 2003, with ground breaking taking place on 19 May 2003. The construction phase of the project went well with the commissioning of the first two modules taking place on 22 October 2003. The remaining two modules were commissioned two weeks later. The plant was at full capacity by the 20 November 2003. A review of the plants performance for the first 5 production months is as follows: the plant has required only a few minor modifications and additions, it has run well in excess of 95%availability with no major wear apparent. In addition to this, the plant has produced 3 times the metal forecast.

Discussion H. J. S. Kriek*: During 1956 Iscor became interested in the acid smelting in a blast furnace of siliceous ores containing 15 per cent silica. This interest was as a result of the successful acid smelting in Germany at a CaO/SiO2-ratio of between 0.4 and 0.8. Acid smelting can become an economic proposition due to a reduction in slag volume accompanied by a lowering of the coke rate. Paschke and Hannel1 found that a free flowing slag (i.e. viscosities of less than two poise) would not be obtained at C/S-ratios lower than 0.82 and that the addition of 3 to 4 per cent alkalies became necessary. In titanium bearing slags it was established that maximum fluidity is obtained with 10 per cent TiO2. Acid smelting resulted in increased sulphur pickup with decreasing O/S-ratio and desulphurization with soda-ash outside the blast furnace was necessary. At Iscor Mr B. B. Segal established that, for slags with (CaO+MgO)/SiO2-ratios of 0.5, 0.6 and 0.7, the addition of alkalies and TiO2 resulted in a substantial decrease in melting point and also of viscosity. At a (CaO+ MgO)/ ratio of 0.53 the addition of 10 per cent TiO2 is as effective as the addition of 3.75 per cent alkalies. This means that a blast furnace can be run without the addition of alkalies and consequently the detrimental effect of alkalies on the lining can be avoided; also that fluid slags with 5 to 15 per cent MgO and 8 to 10 per cent Al203 can be obtained with 10 per cent TiO present. (CaO+ MgO)/SiO2-ratios smaller than 0.5 the addition of titania resulted in a decrease in melting point and also in an increase in viscosity. In ceramic crucibles the slag did not become more viscous with time but thickened appreciably when held in graphite crucibles. No titanium carbonitride could be detected and only Ti20a was found. Prof Howat also did not obtain the TiC-TiN solid solution and therefore it appears that the thickening of the slag is not solely due to the formation of the titanium carbonitrides. This is in agreement with the work of Michailov and Belyakova2 who found that TiO2 decreased the viscosity of acid slags and increased the viscosity of basic slags; that titanium sesquioxide (Ti203) and titanium monoxide (TiO) increased the viscosity of both acid and basic slags and that titanium carbide, which is found in larger amounts in basic slags than in acid slags, considerably increases the viscosity of both acid and basic slags. Patzak et al3 describes the following oxygen deficient titanias, viz Ti2O, TiO, Ti203, Ti3O5, Ti4O7, Ti5O9, Ti6O11- Ti10O9,Ti7O13,Ti8O15 and Ti9O17. Until about 1959 a fair amount of data was available on the viscosity of normal slags to which titania was added2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. At Iscor an electromagnetic viscometer based on the viscometer developed by Bockris10 was built. Progress was very slow as our main attention was centred around problems associated with the operation of the Rotor process. During 1962 and 1963 two papers containing fundamental work on the viscosities of slags in the systems CaO-SiO2-TiO211 and CaO-SiO2-TiO2 at 0 per cent A1203, 10 per cent Al203 and 20 per cent Al20312 appeared. The work of Ross and Ohno obviated the necessity of any further work by Iscor on the viscosity of blast furnace slags containing titania. Ross gave the following optimum compositions for blast furnace slags containing titania. Titania % Lime % Silica % Lime/Silica-ratio 20 30-42 38-50 0.6-1.10 30 27-36 34-43 0.63-1.06 40 24-32 28-36 0.66-1.14 The optimum temperature is 1,500°C because at this temperature the largest workable composition range exists. Higher temperatures result in narrower optimum composition ranges and in increased rates of thickening. The factors affecting the rate of thickening were also investigated by Ross and Ohno, as the main problem with slags containing titania is not finding compositions which are fluid at operating temperatures but the thickening due to a lack of oxygen. With these slags when there is insufficient oxygen to co-ordinate each silicon atom with its own individual shell of four oxygen ions, some sharing of oxygen ions must occur, resulting in the formation of large silicate ions and a rise in viscosity. The formation of oxygen deficient titania can be prevented as long as iron oxide or manganese oxide remain in the liquid slag. Iwase13 and also Viens, Camp bell and Rogers14 obtained in the experimental smelting of ilmenite ores fluid slags with more than 3 to 5 per cent manganese oxide and ferrous oxide in the slags. It appears that titaniferous ores can be smelted in blast furnaces under the following conditions: (1) Acid slag operation, i.e. at C/S-ratios from O.6-1.0. (2) Dolomite can be used as a flux as MgO is a network modifier. (3) The Al2O3-content must be less than 15 per cent as alumina promotes thickening of the slag and decreases the optimum composition range. (4) The hearth temperature must not exceed 1,500°C. Horizontal rotating mills are being used all over the world in different mineral and power generation industries. David Brown South Africa, with over 140 years of experience in gear manufacture and design, has been supplying these industries with innovative designs at exceptional quality. The gearing systems associated with these industries are challenged daily with operating conditions that are not always fully understood. Failures are therefore experienced, over time in the industry, which cannot always be fully explained. David Brown South Africa has developed a gear monitoring system, the Intelligent Gearing System, in association with Transmission Dynamics (UK), in order to monitor and analyse these operating conditions in real time. The system has been designed on the principles of Six Sigma, incorporating Design for Six Sigma. The purpose with this system design is to monitor the operating conditions on the pinion, record the information and analyse the data in relation to the rate of fatigue damage to the girth gear and pinion. This is done in real time and unattended. The output from the Intelligent Gearing System can be fed back into the operating system of the mill user, in order to display an alarm for operating conditions exceeding the design criteria as well as information on the rate of fatigue damage due to these operating conditions. When the mill operating and the effect on the fatigue life of the mill gearing components, conditions are better understood, mill users can forecast critical spare holding levels with an increased accuracy. The Intelligent Gearing System also allows early actions to remove reasons for system overloads.

In order to add value to South Africa?s gold reserves AuTEK, a joint venture between Mintek and Anglogold-Ashanti, was started in 2000 with the aim of developing new industrial uses for gold. Accordingly gold catalysts are being made in kilogram quantities by Project AuTEK and sold toend users and other interested parties under the trade name AUROliteTM. Although these materials are optimized for use in CO oxidation applications, demonstration of appropriate activity, selectivity and durability in both liquid- and other gas-phase reactions has been shown1. The review below highlights the recent use of these materials, and other gold catalysts, in reactions of commercial interest.

South Africa holds approximately three-quarters of the world?s viable chromite ore resources and dominates the global production of ferrochrome. Albeit completely unintended, small amounts of Cr(VI) are formed during ferrochrome production. Certain Cr(VI)species are regarded as carcinogenic, hence making the treatment of some ferrochrome waste materials necessary. In this paper, the Cr(VI) treatment strategies currently employed by the South African ferrochrome producers are investigated by means of a literature review and a questionnaire survey. From the discussion, it is evident that various treatment strategies are available to deal with Cr(VI)-containing waste in the ferrochrome industry. However, by far the most commonly applied treatment strategy remains the aqueous reduction of Cr(VI) with ferrous iron. The advantages and the correct application of this strategy, together with the disadvantages and pitfalls, are argued. Innovative improvements on historic practices are also discussed

A two-dimensional numerical scheme for the simulation of the plastic stress-strain properties of rock, and the various components of rock reinforcement and shotcrete, was used to rigorously determine the characteristics of tunnel support under squeezing conditions. D-shaped tunnels varying in size from 2,8 to 6,5 m in height and width were considered. The four main mining stages in the BAS block cave on Premier Mine were simulated as alternative sets of field stresses. The rock reinforcement comprised 1,8 m long fully grouted rockbolts and 6,0 m long fully grouted cable anchors at various spacings, and of various tensile and bond strengths. Various thicknesses of shotcrete and footwall support configurations were also considered. It was found that shotcrete and rock reinforcement, owing to inherent differences in stiffness, do not function in unison. As monolithic application, shotcrete has an overriding avidity for the imposed loading and destructs itself unless of extraordinary thickness. Under squeezing conditions, it accordingly supports the excavation surface while the rock reinforcement contains on-going convergence. The loads in the various support components can be determined only by simulation of the shotcrete as a stress-relieved medium to represent its broken condition in the field. The loads in the rock reinforcement vary around a tunnel and are the largest in the sidewalls. The loads increase with an increase in tunnel dimensions, the increase in load in the sidewall due to an increase in height being larger than that in the hanging- and footwalls due to an increase in width. Depending on the strength of the rock, the loads in the rock reinforcement become prohibitively large beyond a certain size of tunnel. The reinforcement of footwall rock can be omitted without adversely affecting that in other walls, provided the tensile and bond strengths of the reinforcement are not limited. The resulting footwall heave may, however, result in undermining of the reinforcement in the adjoining walls. A relative depth of anchor of 1,37 provides adequate bond strength in the larger sizes of tunnel, whereas, in smaller tunnels, anchor length is determined by the allowable convergence. The lack of fun column grouting adversely affects the efficiency of rock reinforcement to a major extent. The loads in rock reinforcement are very sensitive to the strength of the rock. Owing to a lack in refinement and calculational rigour, empirical classification systems are an inappropriate means for the design of tunnel support in squeezing conditions and, as a result, grossly unclear-estimate the support requirements.

One of the main tasks in exploitation of mines is to select a method suitable for the deposits, specific features including geometric, geo-mechanical and geological features. The purpose of selecting a mining method at this stage is to choose one or more method(s) having the most coordination with the deposit?s conditions and external factors, including the allocated budget and local technology for detailed feasibility studies. Several methods have been developed in the past to evaluate suitable mining methods for an ore deposit, based on its physical characteristics. These approaches can be classified into three groups: (1) profile and checklist methods, (2) numerical ranking (scoring) methods, and (3) decision-making models. Most of these methods have shortcomings. Considering the fact that most of the specifications of mineral deposits, such as dip and depth, are linguistic variables, absoluteness of the explaining parameters by previous methods can be mentioned as the most important disadvantage of these methods. This paper discusses the Fuzzy technique for order performance by similarity to ideal solution (Fuzzy TOPSIS) to determine the mining method. The fuzzy decision making (FDM) software tool is employed to develop a Fuzzy TOPSIS based model. Application of this model with various values (crisp, linguistic and fuzzy) of the deposit eliminated the existing disadvantages of other methods. Two empirical illustrations demonstrate the effectiveness and feasibility of the evaluation procedure. These show that the proposed model performs better than its alternatives. The structural competence of mesh- and fibre-reinforced shotcrete was investigated in two series of tests on full-scale panels. It was found that uniformly distributed loading was marginally less demanding than point loading, mesh reinforcement was superior to fibre reinforcement, Dramix fibre and Melt Extract fibre were similar in reinforcing characteristics, and 30 mm to 35 mm was an optimum fibre length. Furthermore, the consistency of the fibre content could not be assured on practical mining sites, and an average fibre content of about 1,5 per cent was the maximum that could be obtained for fibre lengths not exceeding 35 mm. Also, owing to its greater flexibility, shotcrete reinforced with diamond mesh was preferable to fibre-reinforced shotcrete in mining excavations subject to squeezing conditions. In view of the difficulties associated with assuring the consistency of the fibre content in mining applications, it appears that the sophisticated attributes of fibre-reinforced shotcrete can be effectively exploited only in civil-engineering applications in which quality assurance is subject to explicit contractual control. Load-deflection curves, together with measurements of compressive stresses in the surfaces of some of the panels, enabled the ultimate flexural strength of reinforced shotcrete to be rigorously formulated, and rigorous design procedures for shotcrete subject to bending and direct thrust to be developed. The application of the procedures is demonstrated in a practical design case in which the moments and thrusts in a tunnel lining are determined in a numerical analysis of the interaction between the lining, the surrounding rock, and the rock-reinforcing system.

A modified in situ leaching method for extracting gold from oxidized gold ores using a non cyanide lixiviant is proposed. A non cyanide lixiviant is suggested because of the obvious concerns posed by injecting cyanide bearing solutions into the subsurface. Oxidized gold ores are the initial focus because earlier research on the use of sodium thiosulphate as a lixiviant under anaerobic conditions indicated that the presence of pyrite led to rapid thiosulphate breakdown. A reconnaissance research programme, involving ore characterization and hydrometallurgical testwork on samples from four Australian ore deposits and preliminary reactive transport modelling studies was carried out. This work showed that lixiviant-oxidant combinations of sodium thiosulphate and ferric EDTA, and iodide and iodine are both capable of extracting high percentages of accessible gold from the selected samples under anaerobic conditions. The ore characterization and reactive transport studies, suggested that both physical and chemical methods of permeability enhancement may be required to lift bulk permeability and the availability of gold for dissolution to sufficiently high levels to obtain adequate gold recoveries. Physical permeability enhancement could be achieved by blasting and/or hydraulic fracturing of the ore. Assuming that such methods prove to be both necessary and economically viable, the mining method would no longer be regarded as simple in situ leaching. Deciding on plant-scale reagent dosage regimes and air rates is a topic of ongoing investigation and high importance. The current work explains some techniques that have proven useful in deciding on plant-scale flotation operating regimes. Specific focus has been placed on the reagents: frother and depressant, as well as some discussion around the control of air rate and froth depth. Air rate has been selected based on its effects on the froth phase. Froth velocity and froth height above the cell lip are the two variables measured and used to select the operating air rate. Pulp level is then adjusted to increase or decrease mass pull. A technique has been developed using the Anglo Platinum Bubble Sizer on an industrial flotation cell to determine the relationship between bubble size and frother concentration. This technique has been extended to measure the equivalent frother concentration or frothabilities of various streams on a rougher bank. A mass balance for frother was performed successfully, and this provided a better understanding of the way frother moved in the rougher bank. With this knowledge, more informed decisions can be made about frother addition required in subsequent flotation stages. For depressant, a new protocol for deciding on dosage rate has been developed. The depressant dosage should be based on the amount of fresh feed material reporting to a bank. Currently 400 g/t of fresh feed has been assumed a reasonable starting point with promising results. Improved froth stability and grades were observed. There is scope for more accurately defining the optimal dosage rate. Importantly, the combined effect of changing the chemistry and the hydrodynamics together has been demonstrated. A significant upward shift in the grade-recovery relationship for a cleaner bank was observed.

The prediction of rock properties from indirect testing methods is important, particularly for preliminary investigations since indirect tests are easier and cheaper than the direct tests. In this study, we investigate the predictability of the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and Brazilian tensile strength (BTS) of rocks from the indentation hardness index (IHI) obtained using point load apparatus. Forty-six different rock types, 14 of which were igneous, 15 were metamorphic, and 17 were sedimentary were tested in the laboratory. The UCS and BTS values were correlated with the corresponding IHI values and the results were statistically analysed. The influence of rock classes on the relationships was also investigated. A strong correlation between UCS and IHI was found for all data. The correlation between BTS and IHI is not as strong as the correlation between UCS and IHI. However, it is in the acceptable limits. When the regression analyses were repeated for igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks, the correlation coefficients were generally increased. The results show the UCS and BTS can be estimated from IHI. In addition, the effect of rock classes on the relationships between IHI and both UCS and BTS is important.

The CSense advanced process control (APC) solution?s main objective was to improve the stability of the pH in the first stage leach process thereby improving nickel and iron extraction efficiencies and reducing the base metal (BM) content in the platinum group metals (PGM) concentrate. By improving the stability of the control of the pH on the first stage leach it had the corresponding effect of improving the Ni extraction efficiency by 0.5% and the Fe extraction efficiency by 3.3%. The system relieved the operators of many decisions that were virtually impossible to make given the complex, variable and real-time nature of the processes in their charge. On the operational side, the operators understand the APC system and they trust it. Another benefit is the reduction in pH peaks in the autoclave, which can oxidize certain elements whereby they become difficult, if not impossible, to leach. These elements go right through the process and end up contaminating the PGM solids, with the result that the entire batch has to be recycled through a lengthy and costly processing pipeline.

The Skorpion process comprises three processing steps-atmospheric leaching in sulfuric acid, zinc solvent extraction and electrowinning to produce special high grade zinc. The major mode of impurity transfer was attributed to crud runs in the solvent extraction circuit. Crud may be described as a heterogeneous, partly inorganic, partly organic mass of material which accumulates predominantly at the interface between organic and aqueous solutions. The paper describes the root causes of the crud formation in the solvent extraction circuit and optimization strategies which are being followed to prevent impurity excursions in electrowinning. The present study investigates the feasibility of using some materials as start-up slags for the extraction of magnesium metal from Egyptian dolomite ores by the Magnethermic technique. The reduction of roasted dolomite (dolime) takes place in a closed evacuated electric arc furnace (small Magnetherm reactor) using ferrosilicon as a reducing agent and liquid start-up slag as a reduction bath under an inert atmosphere. The operational parameters affecting the stabilization of the start-up slag composition and the extraction of magnesium such as reducing agent stoichiometry, reduction temperature, and time were investigated. The dolomitic charge was in the form of sintered briquettes. The charge was reduced under an argon atmosphere in the Magnetherm reactor for constant period and constant temperature. The results showed that the clinker can be used as a start-up slag for the magnethermic process. Also, the optimum conditions for the extraction process were found at 2XSi stoichiometry to give maximum reduction of 80% after 15 minutes reduction time at a temperature of 1550°C. XRD and XRF measurements were used to determine the phases present and the extent of reduction of magnesium, respectively. This study deals with the development of some new theory concerning the bias which will result from the employment of the t-estimator if in fact the underlying distribution of ore values is not lognormal. It is found that the t-estimator is robust as long as the logarithmic variance is small and the shape factors of the transformed distribution are not unduly large. The choice of the threshold parameter [t] for the t-estimator is important, and some hints are given how to estimate it if the sample size is small, as en- countered in borehole valuation problems.

Previously, the grade of ore at the shaft head was taken to be equivalent to the grade measured in the faces by means of chip sampling. The tonnage mined from the stopes is determined from survey volumetric measurements. Estimates of shaft head grade and tons include the grades and tons of waste, development ore, sweepings from old areas, and other sources, not all of which are sampled. The tonnage of ore delivered at the shaft is often estimated using skip factors. These factors are subject to manipulation and not all the skips are filled to the same level. Consequently, both the grade and tonnage of ore delivered at shaft head are subject to a measure of uncertainty. For many years, these uncertainties have led to disputes between shaft managers and metallurgists over the reconciliation between shaft tons and grade and plant tons and grade. These problems are compounded when several shafts feed a central processing plant. Shaft bonuses and a shaft?s profitability are affected by poor gold allocation methods. Without measurement of the grade and tonnage from all shafts, a poorly performing shaft could benefit at the expense of the other shafts. In order to improve the measurement of grades and tonnage at the shaft head, which is the custody transfer point between the mine and surface operations, South African mining companies have developed a methodology to measure the mass of ore from each shaft using rail weighing equipment, and the run-of-mine grades delivered from each shaft using cross-stream (go-belt) sampling. Harmony Gold Mining Company has implemented the rail weighing and go-belt sampling methods for their shafts. This paper deals with the statistical tests on the procedures and control measures that are in place to establish confidence in the gold allocations. The metal accounting system for examining the allocations follows the first principle of the AMIRA P754 Metal Accounting Code of Practice namely ?The metal accounting system must be based on accurate measurements of mass and metal content. It must be based on a full check-in check-out system?. The check-in is mass and grade of run-of-mine ore and the check-outs are the plant input grades and the recovery and residue from the plant. The balances between check-in and check-out are the subject of the statistical analyses, which have been conducted using the classical statistical tests and procedures that are generally used in all fields of endeavour. It is concluded that the gold allocation procedures that rely on go-belt sampling and rail weighing of ore from shafts has been successfully implemented, and that the system, which has been in operation at Harmony since 1993, has won general acceptance from stakeholders, with the gold allocations being perceived as being fair to all. Apart from the on-mine issues of bonuses and fair allocations, accurate metal accounting assists in the broader issues of generating accurate production figures for management. An added benefit of weighing and sampling ore at the shaft head has been that shafts now have daily moving average grades, which are used for grade control. The go-belt sample at the shaft head is the first accurate sample of production in the value chain from face sampling to gold bullion. Potgietersrust Platinums Ltd is Anglo Platinum?s only open pit operation and annually extracts 57 million tonnes of rock from 2 open pits. Over the past 3 years ~220 km of exploration drilling has been done, ~1000 km of rock face have been exposed for face mapping and over 7000 laboratory and field tests have been conducted. This has produced large amounts of geotechnical data to be utilised for feasibility studies, initial slope design and ongoing slope optimisation. It was necessary therefore to develop geotechnical databases to manage the vast amounts of data collected. SABLE and MineMapper 3D databases were created for logging and mapping respectively, with rock testing data incorporated into both. A pit inspections database was developed in MS Access and the existing groundwater and slope monitoring database was improved. The databases were linked to AutoCAD and Datamine to ensure that the latest geotechnical data is used for planning, draughting and modelling. The use of geotechnical databases ensures that no data is lost, standards are maintained and analysis can be easily performed. This increases the confidence of the analysis and allows the geotechnical engineers to optimise slope designs and blast designs on a regular basis. This reduces the risk of slope failure thus making the open pits more economical and safe.

The vast majority of the roughly 100 million rock anchors installed in mines in the USA each year use resin cartridges1. About 4.5 million of these bolts are installed using a mechanical shell in addition to the resin to create an active (pre-tensioned) bolt. Over 1 million of the bolts are passive cable bolts and typically have an effective grout length of 1.2 m, regardless of the cable length, which could be as long as 6 m. The successful performance of the resin grouted bolts depends on several parameters, including the annular gap between the bolt and hole wall, which should be relatively small, ideally from 3 mm to 5 mm. This requirement, combined with the high viscosity of the resin, produces a high back-pressure that can cause the bolt being installed to buckle or not be installed to standard. It is this back-pressure that limits the effective grout length with passive cable bolts and causes the mechanically anchored bolt failures (typically called ?spinners? where the mechanical shell does not anchor). This creates potentially unsafe conditions and wastes time and money. A purpose, built rig was used to mimic underground installations and record the back-pressures during full scale applications in the laboratory. This information was used, and is still being used, to reduce the failures and sub-standard installations by producing improved designs. In addition, a flow model was calibrated that can act qualitatively to estimate the back-pressures and can be used as a crude screening process before full scale prototypes are built and tested. To date, the results obtained have been used to stop the use of a mechanical shell due to the proven higher rate of failures. A new, improved mechanical shell is being field tested and another system is underdevelopment. The use of the rig is therefore ongoing to develop improved mechanical anchor systems. It is too early for real data; however, anecdotal evidence seems to indicate that significant improvements can and will be made.
