High pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) technology has come a long way in its application for comminution duty in hard rock mineral processing in the last three years. Several major projects in copper, nickel, gold, molybdenum, platinum, and iron ore have opted for this technology. Advances in wear abatement technology have established the HPGR as a reliable machine with the required high utilization and availability. The HPGR captures the imagination as the next step change improvement in ore processing, based on the following benefits: ?Energy efficiency (potentially 10?30% more efficient)?very topical in an increasingly ?green? society, and in times of rapidly increasing energy costs and availability concerns. 2008 has shown this to be especially important in Southern Africa ?High (and stable) throughput with a relatively small footprint ?Lower operation cost ?Liberation benefits ?Creative ?mine-to-metal? system improvements made possible by HPGR. The platinum industry, renowned for its historically conservative approach, has not been left behind with two significant new HPGR installations, one in Platreef application and one in UG2 application, commissioned in 2008. While the decision for the Platreef application was driven primarily by comminution circuit capacity and design imperatives, the UG2 application seeks to develop a flowsheet that will have a significant recovery benefit in addition to capacity increase and reduced operating cost. The Platreef application of HPGR also provides the opportunity to introduce a novel comminution flowsheet and to demonstrate exceptionally low wear rates treating very hard, abrasive and variable ore types. The HPGR lends itself for inclusion in existing SABC circuits to increase the capacity of the plant and mills. With current PGM prices many operations are attracted to the HPGR technology benefits. The HPGR clearly has the potential to transform entrenched opinion and provide decision makers with significant alternative comminution options. This paper aims to provide an overview of the current applications and to speculate on the transforming stimulus that the HPGR exerts on industry.

Nuclear energy - its interactions with mining and metallurgy - PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS given by J. P. Hugo Pr. Eng., B.Sc (Eng.) (Rand), Ph.D. (Sheffield) Energy is the life blood of the modern technological era in which we live and it was, I think, Benjamin Franklin who said that the manipulation of energy was the basis of all science and technology. This is perhaps an oversimplification, but there can be little doubt that our life today, and the improved standard of living we aspire to, are governed almost entirely by our ability to generate and manipulate energy. This ability has made it possible for Man - each specimen a feeble twentieth of a horsepower - to travel to the moon, to recover valuable minerals from the depths of the earth, to do arithmetic at unbelievable speed, to lessen the drudgery of manual labour. For these and virtually every aspect of our life we are dependent on energy from external sources. It is, therefore, not surprising that the per capita consumption of energy, and more particularly electricity, has become one of the most reliable criteria by which to measure the standard of living and technological advancement of a country.

Waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) are excellent metal resources. Mineralogical characteristics of different components in WPCBs were analysed in this study. Organic-enriched particles, fibreglass-enriched particles, associated particles and metal-enriched particles were obtained by density gradient method. Subsequently, the elemental composition, morphology, dissociation characteristics, functional group composition and phase composition of different components were analysed by X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (XRF), scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM+EDS), infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Elemental analysis results show that Cu is mainly contained in metal-enriched particles. SEM+EDS analysis results demonstrate that ideal dissociation can be achieved when the WPCBs are broken to -1 mm. Organic matter particles are enriched with carbon and oxygen elements, while fibreglass particles and associated particles mainly contain Al and Si elements, verified by XRD analysis. FT-IR results show that hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups exist widely in all components, caused by widespread organic matter. This study reveals the important properties of different components in WPCBs, which is of great significance for the subsequent separation process. Electrowinning is the final step in the hydrometallurgical production of high purity copper, involving the passage of electric current through an electrolyte and consequent plating of solid copper to form cathode sheets. Key electrowinning performance indicators are the current efficiency, specific energy consumption, yield, and quality of the metal. The high energy demand and associated cost mean that determination of performance indicators is critical during operation, but ‘online’ measurement is impractical due to the nature of the measurements and corrosive environment brought about by acid mist. This research considered the development of a predictive electrowinning model as a shift towards a pre-emptive approach to attaining plant performance data. A steady-state model was created from input variables available in the industry, using a first-principles approach combining mass balances, electrochemical and thermodynamic equations, and property correlations. A circuit diagram equivalent of an electrowinning cell, containing multiple pairs of electrodes, was used as the backbone of the model. The kinetics of each electrochemical reaction were modelled including iron as a major impurity. Losses in current efficiency due to ineffective electrode contact, short circuits, and stray currents were also incorporated. The model was used to predict the current efficiencies for tests performed at varying conditions in a bench-scale electrowinning cell; the average absolute error between the measured and predicted current efficiencies was 3.2%. The model requires a unique parameter fitting approach for each industrial operation; if parameters are customised for specific plants, the model will be a useful tool to predict performance and can aid the development of effective process control systems in copper electrowinning tank houses. Numerous developments and improvements have been made to tap-hole designs. On the other hand, there are very specific designs in operation that have endured for many years without any modification. Nobody likes design changes because of risk - the risk of atypical wear, potential hazards, and costly repairs entailing enormous production losses. So the philosophy ‘never touch a running system’ is maintained, because among other things there is no efficient working monitoring technology for tap-holes. In the past few years a couple of new technical solutions have been investigated and developed. Not all theoretical solutions are possible in practice. However, metallurgists are inventive, and the last word regarding efficient working tap-hole monitoring technologies has not yet been spoken.

A novel agglomeration process has been developed, utilising a concentrated water in oil emulsion as a binder. The binder is typically 95 wt% water, the remainder being an organic phase containing kerosene and the emulsifier— sorbitan mono oleate (SMO) in equal mass portions. The binder can selectively agglomerate hydrophobic particles in less than 7 seconds. The agglomeration has proven to be highly effective in recovering any particle of virtually any size, provided the particle is hydrophobic. The approach has previously been applied to coal, magnetite and silica. In the paper, sodium isobutyl xanthate (SIBX) and its much longer chain version, potassium tetradecyl xanthate (C14X), were used separately as collectors to selectively agglomerate chalcopyrite from the ore. Xanthates attach to metal sulphides, thus hydrophobising sulphide mineral particles. Chalcopyrite is a sulphide mineral; however, it hydrolyses quickly in the presence of water. Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) was used to remove the oxide layer formed at the surface of the mineral particles after wet grinding, leaving behind a freshly generated metal sulphide surface. After the EDTA treatment, the ore particles were quickly conditioned at an optimised pH as well as collector concentration and agglomerated. The agglomeration achieved a copper recovery of 75% within 7 seconds, consistent with the recovery achieved by flotation over much longer time scales. Dolomite is an essential raw material for the refractory industry, a flux in the iron and steel industry and also for the extraction of magnesium metal. Generally, particle size reduction, screening and classification are used for the preparation of the high-grade sized material for different applications, whereas low-grade fine fractions are not utilised. These fines or low-grade overburdens are dumped at the mine site for future utilisation, which creates environmental issues along with inadequate space management. In the present investigation, a detailed study was carried out to decrease the silica content of the low-grade dolomite fines from Gomardih , India, containing 28.6% CaO and 20.1% MgO along with 8.3% silica. Different process flow sheet options were evaluated with a combination of dry classifier, wet classifier, gravity concentrators as well as flotation. Different process variables were assessed along with mineralogical characterisation to optimise the process for efficient rejection of siliceous gangue minerals. Results indicated that dolomite, calcite and quartz are the major mineral phases present in the ore along with other minor minerals. It was concluded that two-stage flotation was an effective process for the reduction of silica up to below 1% after grinding to a particle size below 212 μm. A process flow sheet with a combination of gravitation air classifier and flotation can produce a concentrate with silica content below 4.5%. "The primary objective of any mining business unit is to make profit by extracting, processing, and selling minerals from a particular mineral deposit. It is important to optimize extraction of the mineral resource given time, capital, and space constraints. Mineral extraction is often associated with uncertainty due to variable technical and human factors. Technical factors such as grade distribution, ground conditions, and equipment reliability influence the performance of a mining production system (MPS). The performance of the MPS is also impacted by human factors such as employee skills, health, and attendance. Uncertainty associated with technical and human factors often leads to actual output differing from what was planned. Therefore an in-depth analysis of the significant causes of deviations from the planned outcomes is relevant.In this paper we investigate the empirical relationships between inputs and outputs in a MPS in order to assist management in directing efforts at key production drivers. Once a MPS has been empirically characterized, more effort and resources can be focused on the key decision-making variables (DMVs) in order to meet the planned outcomes.For a typical underground, tabular, narrow-reef conventional drill-andblast platinum mine the face advance, face length mined, number of teams, team efficiencies, and team size have a statistically significant relationship with the centares (m²) produced, which is a key performance indicator (KPI). The production function derived in this study can be used to align the physical, technical, and human factors together to predict the optimal output level. The most significant production lever of the MPS is the face advance. The MPS exists within the mineral extraction link of the complete mining value chain. If an orebody has been drilled to achieve some level of regulatory compliance, then a number of associated geological databases will exist, representing 10 000 to 100 000 m plus of core intervals. The databases usually contain data about assays, lithology, mineralisation and geophysical attributes. They will also include location information such as collar positions and downhole surveys. Obviously this data is collected by geologists for, predominantly, geologists and mining engineers. However, from a process design viewpoint process engineers usually ignore the geology where possible and rely on a small number of metallurgical test samples. Typically these test samples are sourced from convenient and available cores or from a small number of specially drilled metallurgical holes. One of the worst instances known to the author was the design of a SAG mill using only two SAG specific test results (one for each of the major ore types) while, geologically, the orebody was defined by more than 30 000 m of drilling. This paper sets out a philosophy to maximise the use of the geological data, both for process design and in preparation for the commissioning phase of projects. Geological data is used in the identification of preferred locations for metallurgical test samples, for checking the metallurgical validity of the geological ore-type definitions, where necessary developing new ore-type definitions (geometallurgical domains) and developing mathematical relationships for the estimation of important metallurgical factors across the geological database. If the estimation of factors (for example ore competence) is considered reliable enough then there is also the possibility of feeding calculated data back into the block modelling process to allow the generation of metallurgically relevant outputs in the mine plans.

Finsch Diamond Mine, part of De Beers Consolidated Mines (DBCM), is situated between Kimberley and Postmasburg in the Northern Cape, South Africa. The kimberlite pipe was discovered in 1960 and De Beers assumed full mining rights three years later. Production commenced in 1966 from an opencast mine, and the operation moved underground in 1990 by developing and implementing a new mining method of blast hole open stoping. A mechanized block cave was brought into production in 2005. While block caving was not new to DBCM, with productive caves having operated in Kimberley and Cullinan, from the outset, the Finsch caving operation was designed as the most advanced with a semi-automated ground handling system. The extraction level was laid out as a single sided herringbone system due to the very poor ground conditions on the south side of the pipe. These factors combined to create a unique environment, which necessitated a completely new approach to draw control. The required system was developed by a team consisting of DBCM personnel from head office and Finsch, GEMCOM and Sandvik-Tamrock, the equipment manufacturers. It was essential that the system could be run quickly, provide daily updates and issue calls directly to the LHDs. It was also important that the base data were obtained from the resource model, which was to be depleted on a monthly basis, thus forming a close link between mine planning and draw control. A further requirement of the system was that it would form a central database for the extraction operation where all data pertaining to delays and changes in conditions, be they production or ground condition related, could be recorded and analysed. The design brought together empirical rules and tables developed at Cullinan plus concepts from programming developed for the front cave at Koffiefontein so that the new system was based on sound practical experience. These facets were incorporated into PCBC (GEMCOM) and CMS and PCS (Sandvik-Tamrock programmes). The system has now been operational for just under a year and while modifications have had to be made, it has proved itself as a practical and reliable tool with which to manage the draw control at Finsch. The system is unforgiving and has forced the production team to focus on the specified drawpoints. Problems have been encountered but most of these have been related to re-educating a workforce, familiar with a flexible mining method, to the strict discipline required for a modern block cave.

Recently, coal fly ash has become a potential candidate as a secondary resource of rare earth elements (REE). In this investigation, we studied the recovery of REE from fly ash from a commercial power plant. The specific aim was to assess the technical feasibility of recovering REE from the coal fly ash using conventional preconcentration methods, including gravity separation, magnetic separation, and froth flotation. The experimental results revealed that flotation achieved major gains in REE recovery and upgrading. However, during gravity and wet magnetic separation tests, the bulk of REE reported to the tailings. The results showed significant variations in the performance of the various beneficiation methods investigated. This study has confirmed that existing physical separation methods could be used to recover REE from coal fly ash prior to hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical processing, although some challenges persist.

"SynopsisThe physical properties of oxidative sintered pellets produced from typical South African UG2 ore are compared with the physical properties of pellets produced with conventional South African metallurgical-grade chromite ore (from the Lower Group 6 or the Middle Group 1 and 2 seams). A statistical evaluation of the cured (sintered) compressive strengths proved that pellets prepared from UG2 ore are likely to have the same, or better, compressive strength than pellets prepared from metallurgical-grade chromite ore. The cured abrasion strength of the UG2 pellets was also superior to that of the metallurgical-grade pellets. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) backscatter, secondary electron, and elemental X-ray mapping were used to determine the reasons for the general superior strength of the UG2 pellets. The case study UG2 ore also required 13 kWh/t less energy for milling to attain the required particle size distribution prior to pelletization, which can lead to substantial cost savings. Results presented in this paper can be utilized by ferrochromium (FeCr) producers to better quantify the advantages and disadvantages associated with the use of UG2 ore for FeCr production.IntroductionChromite, a mineral of the spinel group, is the only commercially viable source of virgin chromium units. Geologically, commercial chromite deposits in the world are found in three forms, i.e. alluvial-, podiform-, and stratiform-type deposits (Murthy et al., 2011; Cramer et al., 2004). Alluvial deposits were formed by weathering of chromite-bearing rock with the subsequent release of chromite and gravity concentration by flowing water. However, these deposits are relatively small and of comparatively minor commercial interest. Podiform-type chromite deposits usually occur as irregularly shaped pods or lenses, and their distribution within a mineralized zone is usually relatively erratic and unpredictable, making the exploration of these deposits difficult and costly (Cramer et al., 2004). Stratiform-type chromite deposits occur as parallel seams in large, layered igneous rock complexes with more regular layering and lateral continuity (Cramer et al., 2004). The largest example of a stratiformtype chromite deposit is the Bushveld Complex (BC) in South Africa, which holds an estimated three-quarters of the world’s viable chromite ore resources (Cramer et al., 2004).Several chromite seams exist in the BC. The seams of economic interest are the Lower Group 6 (LG6), the Middle Group 1 and 2 (MG1 and 2), and the Upper Group 2 (UG2) seams (Cramer et al., 2004). The LG and MG seams are specifically exploited for their chromium content, while the UG2 seam is mined primarily as a source of platinum group minerals (PGMs) (Xiao and Laplante 2004). Extraction of the PGMs from the UG2 ore usually involves the liberation of the sulphide by milling and subsequent recovery of the PGM concentrate through flotation (Xiao and Laplante, 2004). Chromite in the PGM concentrate is undesirable; therefore, PGM recovery circuits are specifically designed to ensure maximum rejection of the chromite to the tailings stream. However, the chromite in the PGM tailings can potentially serve as feedstock for ferrochrome (FeCr) production, after beneficiation to increase the chromium content."

"This work was carried out to determine the influence of rock properties and drilling machine parameters on the penetration rate at the SJ pit of Rössing Uranium Mine, Namibia. Rock properties (uniaxial compressive strength, tensile strength, and modulus of elasticity) of samples collected were determined in the laboratory. Drilling experiments were conducted in which feed pressure, air pressure, rotary speed, weight on the bit, and torque were varied to measure their effect on the penetration rate. The uniaxial compressive strength varied from 90–180 MPa for layered marble-quartzite and banded gneiss. Increases in feed pressure, weight on the bit, and rotary speed beyond the optimum level led to a decrease in penetration rate and caused the drill bit to ‘stall’. Results of the study revealed that penetration rate increases with an increase in the feed pressure and air pressure. After reaching a maximum value, the penetration rate begins to decrease despite increasing feed pressure. A very high torque causes the drill bit to stall, since the feed pressure is too high and the air pressure is not sufficient to remove the cuttings from blast-hole at maxium bailing velocities. The average penetration rate varied from 19 to 45 m/h for phase 2 of the pit, and from 17 to 68 m/h for phase 3. The optimum drilling machine parameters obtained in phase 2 and phase 3 were slightly lower than those currently being used at the mine. The trials of the optimum machine parameters will assist in reducing the cost of drilling, which varied from N$29.48 to N$36.31 per metre for the tricone bit. IntroductionDrilling and blasting contribute most to the operational cost in opencast mining and have the potential to influence the cost of downstream operations (Aipanda, 2011). The drillability of rocks depends not only on the rock properties, but also on the drilling tools and operational variables. In rotary drilling, rotational speed, thrust, and flushing are the operational variables, and are known as the controllable parameters. Rock properties and geological conditions are the uncontrollable parameters. Although, many attempts have been made to correlate drillability with rock properties, the rock characteristics affecting rotary drilling have not been entirely defined (Hartman, 1962; Kahraman, Bilgin, and Feridunoglu, 2003). "Due to the challenging geological environment of the Postmasburg Manganese Field (PMF), a study was conducted to determine if any benefits would derive from the inclusion of resistivity data during threedimensional (3D) modelling of the manganese resource. This was achieved by estimating manganese resources from 2011/2012 drilling data and comparing them with manganese resources estimated from the same drilling data and resistivity data collected during 2013 and 2017.Both models were adjusted to limit their extent to the same 3D modelling space. Significant volume and tonnage differences were observed for all lithological units. The greatest differences were noted in the manganiferous zones of alteration – 7.200 Mt for the geological model versus 3.700 Mt for the geoelectric model.This study showed that the inclusion of resistivity data can reduce exploration costs significantly, as a direct consequence of the resistivity data allowing more accurate siting of boreholes. This decreases the number of boreholes, samples, and analyses required due to the 3D electrical delineation of mineralized areas prior to drilling.An additional benefit is the ability to more correctly forecast the net present value of an operation due to more accurate estimation of manganese resources and stripping ratios. This is clearly demonstrated by the estimated gross profit estimation of R409 million for the geological resource model versus R264 million for the geoelectric resource model.The addition of resistivity data can, therefore, reduce exploration costs and can increase confidence in geological and financial modelling. It would be reasonable to conclude that this approach could also be used for karsthosted massive sulphide deposits. IntroductionAccording to Corathers (2014) and Gajigo, Mutambatsere. and Adjei (2011), South Africa holds between 75–80% of global manganese reserves, followed by Ukraine (10%), Australia (3%), India (3%), and Gabon (2%). The known, land-based, manganese resources located elsewhere are estimated at 2%.The majority of economically important sedimentary manganese ore deposits in South Africa are situated in the Northern Cape Province (Gutzmer, 1996). Manganese ores of the Postmasburg Manganese Field (PMF) were discovered in 1922, and the Kalahari Manganese Field (KMF) in 1940. According to Astrup and Tsikos (1998) and Gutzmer (1996), mining of manganese ore from the PMF ceased during 1989 in favour of the superior quality of manganese ore from the KMF."

Koffiefontein Mine commissioned a distributed antenna system as an underground communication backbone for the DISPATCH® production management system during September1999. STAS Ltd, the supplier of the Distributed Antenna System developed the System for an Integrated and Automated Mine (SIAM). This communication system, in conjunction with DISPATCH®, fulfils Koffiefontein Mine’s present and future requirements for accurate draw control, increasing productivity and improving working conditions. The DAS as SIAMnet communication network was selected by the mine, because of its superior data transmission rate of up to 1.5Mbps at 860MHz, video and Ethernet transmission facilities, and future enhancement abilities. The results of the commissioning tests confirmed the quality and integrity of the data and voice communication. The initial installation enabled 9000 metres of underground production tunnels with voice communication inclusive of 3700 metres having data communication. This article discusses the requirements and selection of the telecommunication system for an underground mine. A description of the installed distributed antenna system follows with a summary of the commissioning tests. This study investigated flotation of phosphate from a low-medium grade 8-12% P2O5, 65-73% SiO2 sedimentary phosphate ore from Kropz Elandsfontein (herein referred to as Elandsfontein) in South Africa. Quantitative evaluation of minerals by scanning electron microscopy (QEMSCAN) was used to determine apatite grain size distribution, liberation and mineral association in the F2 horizon sample. The mineralogy indicated that apatite was liberated and for the Elandsfontein plant to operate at the design throughput, the flotation feed has to be milled to a coarse grind ranging between 300 μm and 425 μm. Reverse flotation process routes using varying reagent dosages, and flotation feed top sizes that could possibly yield a final product of 31% P2O5,10% SiO2 at a reasonable +70% P2O5 recovery were investigated. Based on the results, a split circuit of coarse (-300+212μm) flotation and fine (-212+20μm) flotation, was mostly preferred as compared to treating the whole ore. A final combined concentrate of 31% P2O5 and 10% SiO2 with P2O5 recovery of 84% could be produced from the reverse split circuit. The robustness of reverse flotation for both coarse and fine fractions was further investigated. Reverse flotation of the fines fraction was found to be robust and produced a final product of 31% P2O5. It was however more challenging to achieve the required product grade and recoveries on the coarser fraction (-425+212μm), suggesting that reverse circuit was not adequately robust at fractions coarser than 300μm. An elevated location of a paste thickener on a ridge close to the disposal area is considered at a Swedish iron ore mine. About 0.7 M tonnes of thickened tailings are planned to be layered as paste in the vicinity of the thickener over several years with pipeline lengths of up to 900 m after about 20 years. In order to clarify the pipeline pumping characteristics of the tailings product for volumetric solids concentration from 40 to 50%, experiments in loop systems with pipeline inner diameters from 0.063 to 0.152 m have been carried out with various types of pumps. The results and comparisons carried out here showed that the performance of centrifugal pumps cannot simply be related to the rheology, but factors related to pump design and build-up tendencies of material within the pump and other particle properties may be of equal importance. During the first years of operation only one thickener underflow pump is required. The reliability and performance for various pump configurations are planned to be investigated systematically in order to meet the most effective long-term solution for paste thickener operation, pipeline distribution and placement in the disposal area as the discharge point advances over the life of the project.

Caving is the lowest cost underground mining method provided that the draw point spacing, draw point size, and ore-handling facilities are designed to suit the caved material, and that the draw point horizon can be maintained for the life of the draw. In the near future, several open-pit mines that produce more than 50 kt per day will have to examine the feasibility of converting to low-cost, large-scale underground operations. Several other large scale, low-grade underground operations will experience major changes in their mining environments as large dropdowns are implemented These changes demand a more realistic approach to mine planning than in the past, where existing operations have been projected to increased depths with little consideration of the change in mining environment that will occur. As economics force the consideration of underground mining of large, competent ore bodies by low-cost methods, the role of cave mining will have to be defined In the past, caving was generally considered for rockmasses that cave and fragment readily. The ability to define cavability and fragmentation, the availability of large, robust load-haul-dump units, a better understanding of draw-control requirements, improved drilling equipment for secondary blasting, and reliable cost data have shown that competent orebodies with coarse fragmentation can be exploited by cave mining at a much lower cost than by drill-and blast methods.
