Aluminum alloys are used in two broad classifications: wrought and cast. Wrought alloy products, which are formed into final shape by rolling, forging, extruding. etc., contain low percentages of alloying elements; whereas cast aluminum products, which generally are not worked before use, may contain higher percentages and a somewhat different selection of alloying elements. For example, wrought aluminum alloys usually contain less than one percent silicon and cast alloys contain as much as 18 per-cent silicon. While there are good techniques available for separating aluminum alloys from mixed scrap, there are no efficient ways to separate wrought aluminum from cast aluminum. The high levels of silicon, iron) copper, and zinc from the cast alloys make wrought-cast mixtures unacceptable for wrought alloy production. Consequently, separated wrought aluminum scrap commands a premium price on the market. Since increasing amounts of mixed aluminum alloys are being recovered from automobile scrap, this separation is important for efficient recycling of these alloys. Approach The difference in thermo-mechanical properties between the two classes of aluminum alloys is used as the basis for the separation process. Casting alloys lose their ductility within a certain temperature range while wrought alloys remain ductile. As temperature increases, aluminum alloys gradually become weaker, and at a certain temperature, each alloy loses strength and ductility due to incipient melting in localized areas. For casting alloys that temperature generally lies between 520° to 560° C, but it is above 600° C for most wrought alloys. Mild crushing, therefore, in the proper temperature range will result in complete fragmentation of the casting alloys but only plastic deformation of the wrought alloys. A simple screening step then is used to separate the oversize wrought pieces from the fragmented cast alloys.

Objective To develop a passive, inexpensive technique for monitoring explosion overpressures within sealed areas in underground coalmines. Background From 1994 to 2000, seven explosions of methane and/or coal dust occurred within the worked-out, sealed areas (gobs) of underground U.S. coal mines. These explosions, believed to have been started by lightning, destroyed many seals and caused much damage external to the sealed area. One gob explosion went undetected until the mine operator reopened the sealed area and discovered the damage. Fortunately, these gob explosions did not cause any fatalities or injuries. Because lightning occurs in just about all mining areas, several questions arise. Could gob gas explosions be occurring in other sealed areas and going undetected? If so, what is the magnitude of the resulting explosion overpressures? The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) undertook a study to identify and evaluate passive measuring devices to monitor and quantify the overpressures associated with such explosions. This work was done in parallel with full-scale explosion experiments for evaluating the strength characteristics of seals used for isolating areas in underground coal mines. Approach Evaluation studies were done in PRL's 20-liter explosion test chamber and in the full-scale Experimental Mine at Lake Lynn Laboratory to evaluate the response and accuracy of various commercially available automobile tire pressure gauges to overpressures generated from gas and dust explosions. The first series of tests was done in the 20-liter chamber, which is used to study the explosibility and inerting of fuel dusts and gases. Data from the tire pressure gauge tests were compared to the pressure-time data obtained from the 20-liter chamber 's traditional electronic strain gauge pressure transducer recorded on a high-speed data acquisition system. To evaluate the tire pressure gauges, the valved inlet (tip) of the candidate pressure gauge was removed and the body of the gauge was cemented with epoxy into a 0.25-in pipe elbow and attached to the outside of the test chamber. A second series of tire gauge evaluation tests was done at Lake Lynn during explosion-resistance testing of seals used in underground coal mines. Full-scale seals (20 ft wide by 8 ft high)were constructed as one wall of a 2,000-ft3 chamber and exposed to a series of methane explosions. Average overpressures ranged from20 to 80 psi. The seals were built with various strength materials ranging from 7 to 48 in thick. The modified tire gauges are attached on the outside of the chamber to a 0.25-in NPT pipe that extends into the chamber (figure 1). The axis of the gauge is mounted at a right angle to the plane of the seal to minimize the coupling of any seal movement to the stem of the gauge that may cause inaccurate readings. The internal explosion pressure history is recorded with a strain gauge pressure transducer mounted inside the chamber. Methane is injected into the chamber, mixed with air, and ignited with an electric spark located at the geometric center of the chamber. Maximum explosion overpressures are recorded and compared with the tire gauge pressure.

Although haulage truck collisions account for only a small percentage of haulage accidents, the likelihood of severe injury, or even death is very high when such a collision does occur. Most rear-end collisions also result in considerable equipment damage, creating a need for expensive repairs. To improve collision protection, some southwestern surface mines have, for several years, been fabricating and using extended bumpers. In cooperation with these mines, the Bureau of Mines has worked to improve this technology by evaluating the structural requiremnts of extended bumpers. How Extended Bumpers Help The Bureau found that when one large rear-dump haulage truck collides with the rear of another an extended bumper protects the driver of the vehicle that is struck by dissipating the impact energy into the rear tires and pushing the whole vehicle forward. An extended bumper also prevents the box on the truck that is hit from penetrating the cab of the other truck-a typical and serious collision hazard. A further advantage derives from the wide design of the extended bumper which helps prevent damage to truck ladders, thereby minimizing any entry or exit problems. Extended bumpers also provide safe work platforms at the front of large haulage vehicles.

This report presents data on individual plants of the fuel-briquet and packaged-fuel industries that were circularized by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in its annual survey for 1958. Only plants that processed fuels of mineral origin were included; specifically, plants that manufactured briquets from charcoal were excluded. Fuel briquets and packaged fuel are manufactured by mixing fine-sized fuels with binders and compressing into small individual shapes. Both are used mainly for residential heating in the United States, but they differ considerably in appearance and physical characteristics. Briquets usually are produced as small, pillow-shaped forms, 2 to 4 inches in length, weighing from 2 to 4 ounces. Pack-aged fuel consists of 3-to 4-inch cubes, 6 or 8 of which are wrapped in heavy kraft paper to form a package weighing 10 to 15 pounds. Briquets are made with a water-insoluble binder and are designed for rough handling and outdoor storage, whereas packaged fuel generally is made with a water-soluble binder and must be stored indoors to prevent deterioration. Briquet plants are relatively large and usually are at mines or in dock areas where large quantities of fine-sized fuels accumulate. Packaged-fuel plants are smaller and are used chiefly by retail dealers to convert locally available coal and coke fines into a product that can be burned efficiently in residential beating equipment.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a rapid analytical method for the determination of anions by ion chromatography (IC) in phosphate rock mining materials and cement kiln dust (CKD). The procedure employs an Na2C03 fusion of the sample, followed by a water extraction that allows direct injection of the sample into an ion chromatograph without separator column poisoning by the transition metal ions. Fluoride (F-) and phosphate (P043-) were determined in 24 phosphate rock processing and waste material samples by the IC method. The results were compared with a pyrohydrolytic distillation-titration method for F-and a colorimetric procedure for P043-. Excellent analytical agreement was obtained for F-and p043-values determined by IC and the comparable wet chemical methods. Fluoride values ranged from 0.3 wt-pct in the filter cake to 3.6 wt-pct in phosphate rock concentrate. Phosphate values ranged from 1.2 wt-pct in the filter cake to 33.8 wt-pct in the rock concentrate. Fluoride, chloride, phosphate, nitrate, and sulfate in several CKD samples were determined by the IC method and standard wet chemical techniques. Excellent agreement was obtained between the two methods for all anions. A total of 113 CKD samples from all areas of the United States was analyzed by the IC method. Fluoride values ranged from <0.01 to 0.36 wt-pct. Chloride values ranged from <0.01 to 12.5 wt-pct. Sulfate values ranged from 0.41 to 31.6 wt-pct. Phosphate and nitrate were detected in only about 25 pct of the samples at >0.02 wt-pct. Maximum phosphate and nitrate values were 1.0 and 1.6 wt-pct, respectively.

Perform laboratory tests to measure the vibration attenuation characteristics of off-road vehicle operator seats for various types of seat suspensions, cushions, and seat adjustment settings. Background A study was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to determine the probability of whole-body vibration (WBV) exposure for a large class of off-road machinery operating in surface coal mines. The study determined that mere than 40 pct of off-road equipment operators were exposed to WBV exceeding the standard fatigue-decreased-proficiency (FDP) level defined by the International Standards Organization in its guideline ISO standard 2631. The tire-terrain interaction of a moving vehicle generates vibrations that are transmitted through the ve¬hicle suspension, cab mounting, and seat. The final point of transmission of vehicle vibration to the operator is through the scat. A seat that provides good vibration isolation and allows good vehicle control is of prime importance to operator safety and health.

Since 1990 and the publication of the Ergonomics Program Management Guidelines for Meatpacking Plants by the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration, numerous reports of companies implementing ergonomics program have been published. However, despite these numerous reports, no examples of implementing an ergonomics program in the mining industry have been reported. In 2000, NIOSH initiated a long-term project to demonstrate the implementation of an ergonomics process designed to identify and reduce exposures to ergonomic risk factors found in mining. The mine selected for this project was the Jim Bridger Mine, a surface coal mine located 35 miles northeast of Rock Springs, Sweetwater County, WY. This paper discusses how a large, surface coal mine implemented an ergonomics program and the lessons learned while doing so.

A laboratory study was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to investigate the technical feasibility of decomposing hydrous magnesium chlorides by using a steam pyrohydrolysis technique. This procedure consisted of injecting steam into the atmosphere of a decomposition furnace containing samples of hydrous magnesium chloride and determining the rate of hydrolysis by measuring the rate of chloride evolution. The variables investigated were temperature, amount of water vapor in the decomposition atmosphere, and hydration stage of magnesium chloride. The application of steam was shown to accelerate both the rate and completeness of magnesium chloride decomposition reactions. For example, when magnesium chloride hexahydrate is exposed to a furnace temperature of 600&apos; C in an air atmosphere for 20 minutes, the decomposition is 37 percent. Under identical conditions in a steam atmosphere, the decomposition is in excess of 70 percent. The magnesium oxide produced by the steam pyrohydrolysis of magnesium chloride dihydrate at 800° C contained 98 percent magnesium oxide. Based on magnesium oxide composition, this is equivalent to that of burned magnesite produced at temperatures in excess of 1,300° C. To demonstrate the quality of the product on a practical basis, metal reduction tests have shown it to be equivalent to reagent-grade magnesium oxide as a carbothermic reduction feed material.

This chapter presents data on occupational exposures from several sources. Data from compliance samples obtained by MSHA inspectors are presented in table 6-1 for coal mine dust and silica dust, and in tables 6-2 through 6-6 for metal fumes. Since these samples were taken for compliance monitoring rather than as part of a survey of the industry, it is difficult to predict how well they indicate actual exposures for all mining operations. In the coal industry, 7.8% of all respirable dust samples during 1986-1995 were above the permissible exposure limit (PEL). Of silica dust samples obtained during the 10-year period, 23.7% were above the PEL in coal, 16% in metal, 10.8% in nonmetal, 9.1% in stone, and 7.6% in sand and gravel. Of metal fume samples, silver samples showed the largest percentage above the PEL-approximately 48% of samples in both metal and nonmetal. Tables 6-7 and 6-8 present data on noise exposures from the MSHA "dual threshold" survey, which was published in the Federal Register [61 Fed. Reg. 66347 (1996)] as part of a proposed rule change for occupational noise exposure in mining. This study examined a group of samples obtained during 1991-1995 and compared the percent of samples that were above two separate specified limits. The first limit was the current noise standard, a time-weighted average of 90 dBA, calculated to include only exposures at 90 dBA and above. The second limit was a time-weighted average of 85 dBA, calculated to include exposures at 80 dBA and above. Tables 6-8 and 6-9 refer to musculoskeletal overload conditions examined in the National Occupational Health Survey of Mining (NOHSM) [NIOSH 1996]. Table 6-8 shows the operational definitions for each condition; table 6-9 shows the percentage of the workforce potentially exposed, by commodity. Across all commodities, a large proportion of workers were exposed to musculoskeletal overloads due to positioning of the neck and back; positioning and motion of the forearms, arms, and shoulders; heavy lifting; and positioning and movement of the lower limbs. The recorded overloads were defined in the survey and did not exceed any NIOSH, MSHA, or OSHA guidelines for musculoskeletal overloads. Further information on this survey appears in appendix A.

Provide a portable crushing capability to keep conveyor haulage close to the working face and permit more efficient and safer ore handling in low headroom, hardrock mines. Approach A readily portable jaw crusher is used which meets machine size, feed rock size, product size, and throughput requirements for low headroom, hardrock mines. How It Works The crusher is mounted on wheels to expedite frequent moves and to allow crushing of mined rock or ore near the working face. The crushed product is then placed on conveyor belts that are ex-tended as the crusher is moved. Keeping crushing and conveyor haulage near the face minimizes the haulage distances for trucks and loaders. Loading and haulage of run-of-mine ore is frequently the highest operational cost in underground mines. These costs can be significantly reduced by use of a belt conveyor, which is a common practice in coal and other soft mineral mines. The new low-profile hard rock crusher gives the same advantage of extensive belt haulage capabilities to low headroom, hardrock mines. The low-profile crusher will accept feed up to 30 inches when operating under 11 feet of headroom. The headroom required for crusher operation was reduced by tilting the jaws, feeding the crusher horizontally, and placing the eccentric shaft at the back or in a horizontal plane with the jaws. Analyze variably saturated flow in mining and other environmentally sensitive settings through the use of personal computer (PC) based software. The Problem There is an increasing need for mining companies to quantify water contaminants and their migration in the unsaturated zone. New and innovative computer models are therefore necessary to more accurately assess the potential impact of mining activities on groundwater resources and the environment. Applications for unsaturated flow modeling include (1) assessment of the impact of surface or underground extraction mining on flow conditions; (2) assessment of various hydrologic designs for resource recovery, such as in heap leaching or in situ leach mining; (3) assessment of the transport of conservative nonrcactive constituents in response to migration from spoil piles, or acid mine drainage; and (4) assessment of any combination of the above to facilitate expeditious permitting for mining operations. Since the mid 1970&apos;s there has been a proliferation of mathematical models and procedures for solving unsaturated now problems; however, few of these approaches have been integrated into software for public use. Commercially available unsaturated flow software models typically are limited to a single application and have restricted approaches. For example, computer codes that solve the unsaturated flow problem based on an analytic expression arc restricted to a simple geometric shape, homogeneous and isotropic materials, and provide only information regarding pressure and flow conditions in specified wells. The variably saturated computer codes that take advantage of the finite difference or finite element approach arc often restricted to either steady state or transient solutions; utilize one specific moisture-retention relationship and moisture-dependent permeability function; do not account for hysteresis; and are used with specific hardware such as a mainframe or work station. This restricts their use because they arc hard to interface, and arc often poorly documented, support dependent, and expensive. The mining community needs a flexible, more broadly based, variably saturated fluid flow simulator for the PC-platform to more accurately predict fluid movement in the mining environment.

Reduce the time, complexity and expense of dissolving metal and mineral samples in solution in preparation for chemical analysis. Approach In earlier research, the Bureau of Mines developed a rapid and inexpensive method for the dissolution of mineral and metal samples in plastic pressure bottles heated in a boiling water bath. Using this technique, samples could be prepared for chemical analysis in less than one hour compared with several hours by traditional dissolution methods (see Technology News No. 85, December 1980 for further details). By heating in a microwave oven, sample dissolution time can be reduced to approximately 5 minutes.

The final tables of this chapter, tables 25-50, extend and expand the statistical series on production that was started in the 1963 edition of the Area Reports: International Volume of the Minerals Yearbook and that was subsequently updated and expanded in the 1965 and 1967-90 editions. Continuing the practice started in 1989, a column has been included in each of these tables providing a 5-year average for 1987-91, inclusive. This should provide a clearer picture more rapidly of the role of each major producer over the 5-year period. The listing order of major producers, however, continued to be, as in past years, in descending order of rank in the year of review, 1991. This group of tables now includes each of the crude minerals that ranked from? 1st to 19th in 1983 terms of value of their output (as well as four others of lesser rank). These 23 crude mineral commodities accounted for 93 % of the estimated value of world crude mineral production in 1983. In addition, world output of five key downstream products-aluminum, steel, cement, nitrogen in ammonia, and refined oil-is included because of their significance as products.

Minimize the risk of conveyor belt fires in underground coal mines by improving the accuracy of and means by which flammability data are acquired. Approach Develop a large, laboratory-scale flammability test for mine conveyor belting that realistically assesses its fire resistance. Background A conveyor belt fire in an underground coal mine is a serious threat to life and property. To minimize the risk of belt fires, the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) for underground coal mines requires approved fire-resistant belting. Despite this precaution, about 25% of the reportable underground coal mine fires from 1983 through 1988 involved conveyor belting. In several instances, hundreds of feet of belting were destroyed. The current flammability test for fire-resistant belting is specified in 30 CFR, Part 18.65 and is conducted by (be Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). The small-scale test is performed in a 21-in-cubical chamber with 6-in-long by 1/2-in-wide belt samples. To evaluate the flammability of conveyor belting under more realistic conditions, the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted large-scale fire tests of belting. The large-scale data were then utilized in the development of an improved laboratory-scale flame test for fire-resistant belting.

"The size of off-highway trucks has increased substantially over the last decade, bringing about a radical change in truck maintenance practices and procedures. As a result, surface mine maintenance mechanics today are faced with the increased hazards of working with larger and heavier tools and components and doing repairs at greater heights, thereby exposing them to a high potential for serious injury or death. Not surprisingly, the number of accidents involving truck maintenance mechanics is significantly increasing.The Bureau of Mines has assessed the haulage truck maintenance safety problem, analyzing maintenance-accident data over the 7-yr period, 1978- 84, in terms of personnel, job activities, truck components and systems, tools involved, and truck design. This assessment, based on the review and interpretation of 1,225 haulage truck maintenance accident reports, identified major factors contributing to these accidents. Overall, young, inexperienced workers are involved in most accidents. A typical maintenance accident involves a male mechanic under 33 yr old, with less than 5 yr job experience. INTRODUCTIONOver the past decade, surface mine maintenance and repair operations have changed radically. The number of maintenance personnel has grown along with the hazards of working with larger and heavier components at greater heights and with larger and heavier tools. Furthermore, transfer of skills from over-the-road vehicle mechanics is not as feasible as it once was, because of the ever increasing size of mining equipment and the complexity of its design. In short, surf ace mine equipment maintenance and repair has become increasingly sophisticated as well as labor intensive, necessitating further research and evaluation in terms of both safety and efficiency (1, 7-8) 2"

Develop and demonstrate a lightweight material that has low thermal conductivity and that would be suitable for placement using shotcrete methods. This material could be applied in deep, hot mines where mine drifts must be insulated. Its use would decrease mine refrigeration needs and reduce energy costs.

The amplitude of the first peak of an ultrasonic pulse which has traversed the diameter of a sphere is obtained for many directions in the sphere. This amplitude is relative to an input which is held constant for all measurements on a given sphere. Since the boundary conditions, distance of travel, and the controllable experimental factors are constant for all measurements, variations in this amplitude reflect variations in the attenuation or absorption with direction. The data are plotted and contoured as an equal area projection. The attenuation symmetry is the symmetry expressed by the contour pattern. Analysis of the data from several rock types indicates that the amplitude expresses a higher percentage of anisotropy than the velocity. In most cases the attenuation symmetry appears to be of the same system as the elastic symmetry expressed by the velocity. Results are shown for three rock spheres.

"""Hazard"" is the general expression used by safety engineers to denote risk, or the danger to property or human beings from the contingencies peculiar to different industries. Where a business, family, or individual is subjected to possible financial loss from any particular hazard, it is customary and is considered good practice to insure for reimbursement of possible loss. Accordingly, we take out insurance for earthquakes, for fire, for accidents, etc., and are charged a different premium for each. The premium rate is based on our relative exposure to the hazard in comparison to the total loss to our particular class of business in our geographical location over a given period.Insurance, then, must be considered as the experience of a group rather than of an individual, and any individual may be fortunate or unfortunate over stated periods. Through the law of averages, the probability of loss because of exposure to hazard is becoming more accurately measured as experience is accumulated and data are analyzed.Lion human life came to have a financial value in the eyes of the law, and employers were held liable for losses through accidents to employees while on duty, insurance companies began to underwrite the accident risks of the different employers and divided them into classes based on the amount of risk involved. Premiums for compensation insurance are based on relative exposure, which is measured by pay roll. The premium is rated in proportion to the severity of losses established by statistical studies.' It soon became evident that the accident experience of employers in the some industry varied widely; that is, there were good and bad risked in the same line of business. This resulted in ""experience rating"" of premiums, meaning thereby that an employer with experience in accident cost was premium rated in proportion to his losses over a stated period (usually three or more years)."

This paper contains the results of an examination of accident, injury, employment, and production information reported to the U.S. Department of Labor&apos;s Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and provides information on some of the measures longwall mine operators are using to prevent accidents In all industries, technological advances play a key role in determining those who will survive as competitive participants in an increasingly global marketplace. While mining is among the most basic of industries, technological change is neither unfamiliar nor unwelcome to miners. Historically, technological advances in mining, particularly coal mining, have tracked closely with fluctuations in demand. In the early 1900&apos;s, coal accounted for more than three quarters of all the fuel consumed in the U.S. To meet this tremendous demand, underground cuffing machines were introduced, resulting in faster, more efficient coal extraction. Transporting coal to the surface, however, remained labor intensive. In the 1920&apos;s, nearly all underground coal was still being hand loaded. Demand for coal then declined as the price of oil, natural gas, and electricity became competitive. In the late 1930&apos;s and throughout the duration of World War II, coal demand and production was high. By 1940, more than half the coal mined was being mechanically conveyed to the surface. In 1948, the continuous mining method was introduced in the U.S., further accelerating the extraction process. By the 1950&apos;s and 1960&apos;s, however, coal production again declined as railroads converted to diesel fuel and gas and oil provided a larger share of the home heating market. Underground coal mines required even more mechanization to remain competitive as an energy source. The first longwall system was introduced in 1960. By 1995, longwalls were producing more than 189 million tons of clean coal annually, surpassing continuous mining production for the second straight year. The mining of coal and other materials has not come without a huge loss of life and considerable human suffering. More than 103,000 workers died from injuries in U.S. mines in the last 85 years. Between two and three thousand miners died each year from the turn of the century until 1931, many from underground fires and explosions. The U.S. has witnessed a tremendous drop in fatalities in underground coal mines. Credit for that is due to safety inspections and enforcement activities, better safety awareness and practices among management and labor, improved ventilation, the use of safer equipment, and increased mechanization which removed many miners from the hazards at the face and also reduced the size of the mining work force. There is little doubt that longwall mining has greatly increased underground coal mine productivity. The degree to which longwall mining has contributed to a safer work environment for underground miners is more difficult to ascertain.

Analytical methods for oxygenates in exhaust gases were studied, and emissions of these compounds from automotive engines were measured with and without an oxidation catalyst in the exhaust system. Hydrocarbons, simple mixtures of hydrocarbons, and a single gasoline were used as fuels. With the more complex gasoline, successful analysis was possible only with exhaust from the catalytic system which preferentially converted and thus removed interfering hydrocarbon species. However, it was shown that an estimate of the oxygenate yield from gasoline used in a noncatalytic system can be synthesized from data obtained with simple fuels. Such synthesized data were used for comparison of noncatalytic with catalytic systems. Compared with those of previous studies, results of this work indicate that the action of the catalyst introduced no new oxygenates and reduced both the carbonyl and the total of oxygenates. It is concluded that the compositional character and class distribution of oxygenates in exhaust from catalytic systems may differ significantly from the composition and distribution for oxygenates not subjected to catalytic conversion. The findings also support previous estimates that noncarbonyls may constitute a significant fraction of exhaust oxygenates and may warrant attention in procedures for measurement of the oxygenates.
