Comprehensive ventilation surveys are made to review the adequacy of the mine system with regard to both statutory requirements and/or company policy, to evaluate improvements to the current ventilation system and to plan for £stun expansion. If computer simulation is to be used for these purposes, accurate quantity and pressure measurements become an absolute necessity since the validity of the computer generated output is heavily dependent on the accuracy of the input data. Consequently ventilation surveys that are run to generate input data for computer simu¬lation must use the best data collection procedures to guarantee as accurate results as are possible. These requirements have led to modifications in procedures that are used for routine ventilation surveying. McElroy and Kingery (1957) have recommended that pressures be measured independent of quantities since minor changes in mine conditions have a greater effect on absolute pressure measurements than on quantity measure¬ments. They estimate that, for large mines, a pressure survey may take only 1 to 3 days while the corresponding quantity survey would require 1 to 3 weeks. Although this procedure would undoubtedly lead to more ac¬curate pressure measurements, its use for the development of computer input data is not recommended for the following reasons. Atkinson's equation, H = RQ2, is used in computer oriented analysis to develop the airway resistance, R, based on quantity and pressure loss measure¬ments. It can easily be seen that since R a 1/Q2 and R a H, the effect of errors in quantity measurement is, in fact, more significant than those in pressure measurement. If the quantity and pressure measure¬ments are made at different times another problem results. Minor changes in quantity that may occur in the time between the pressure and quantity

The Bureau of Mines investigated an electrolytic technique for oxidizing ore slurried with brine to determine its effectiveness in extracting mercury from ores. Optimization experiments conducted on a 2.5-pound-mercury-per-ton ore resulted in 95 percent mercury extraction with operating conditions of 30° C, a current density of 0.5 ampere per square inch, and a treatment time of 3.5 hours. Corresponding power consumption amounted to 38 kilowatt-hours per ton of ore treated. Amenability experiments conducted on 62 different mercury ores resulted in 90 to 99 percent mercury dissolution from ores containing 0.6 to 20 pounds of mercury per ton of ore, Treatment time ranged from 1 to 7 hours in 4-to 20-percent sodium chloride solutions, and power consumption was in the range of 10 to 50 kilowatt-hours per ton of ore. Pilot mill experiments in a 100-to 200-pound-per-hour extraction plant have been in progress to quantify power and reagent requirements. These data will be reported in a subsequent publication.

A custom gold and silver plant is one that treats ores for a fee. Usually such plants are located in mining districts and treat local ores. Ores of milling grade generally can stand only moderate transportation charges. These plants are scattered throughout the West. Most plants now doing a custom business originally were built by mining companies to handle ores from their own mires. As excess mill capacity became available ores from neighboring properties were treated, vainly as an accommodation. Later, as their own ore bodies became depleted, the mills were operated entirely on a custom basis. A few plants pull ore from their own mines only when the supply of custom ore is insufficient to keep the mill operating. Some of the present custom plants were built for custom work alone. Although built originally to treat the ores of the Golden Cycle mine, the Golden Cycle plant at Colorado Springs, Colo., soon became a custom mill and has been operating successfully for many years. It is the largest gold mill in the Western States and. treats Cripple Creek ores, from which most of its tonnage still comes. The plant is equipped to treat a great variety of ores and receives shipments from a wide area. It competes with smelters in Colorado, as it has a roasting plant to prepare sulphide concentrates for treatment in its cyanide plant. Most custom mills, however, are not adapted for more than one or two kinds of ore. Gold occurs in its ores both in the metallic state (free) and locked up in sulphides. It also occurs in a few places, notably at Cripple Creek and a few other Colorado districts, as tellurides. Mien the gold occurs in the native state, the ores is said to be free-milling and can be recovered by amalgamation. Usually, however, some subsidiary treatment is required to make a satisfactory extraction. Amalgamation generally was followed by tabling in the earlier mills; at present, flotation has replaced tables at many places. As depth is reached in raining and the workings extend below the oxidized zone the character of the ore usually changes, or, as the miners say, "it gets base". Since the advent of flotation, the average recovery of gold in base ores has been improved-greatly. Cyanidation is applied to some types of both gold and silver ores. The recovery by cyanidation is in general considerably higher than by other methods in vogue and in addition has the advantage of making a finished product which can be sold directly to the mist, thus obviating smelting charges on concentrate and discounts

The sensitivity of radiochemical techniques makes possible the study of the initial-stage sulfuric acid leaching kinetics of chalcopyrite and other copper sulfide minerals. This Bureau of Mines study of the initial leaching of chalcopyrite used techniques to evaluate the molecular and electrochemical processes. High-grade Transvaal chalcopyrite was neutron-irradiated in a TRIGA reactor4 to produce radioisotopes copper-64, iron-59, and sulfur-35. Dissolution rates were measured in the time interval zero to 60 minutes, during which time significant anomalies were observed. First was an initial period of rapid dissolution lasting a few minutes; second, an arrest or ?plateau? region usually lasting from 6 to 10 minutes; third, a second period of dissolution of lesser rate than the first. The effects of solution variables such as pH, oxygen partial pressure, and ferric ion concentration at different temperatures were measured.

Samples of gas were obtained directly from the coalbed during drilling of horizontal and vertical boreholes in six different formations. The samples were analyzed by gas chromatography for C1 to C5 hydrocarbons and for 02, H2, H2, He, and C02. Methane in the gas varied from 63 to 99 percent; carbon dioxide from 0.1 to 15 percent. The CH4 /CO2 ratio varied and showed no apparent correlation with age, rank, or bed. The majority of samples contained ethane, propane, and butane; hydrogen and helium were found in some samples. Oxygen and nitrogen were usually present, possibly as a result of air contamination. A more extensive sampling program would be necessary to establish relationship between the amount and composition of the gas in the coalbed and other factors.

"It has been recently suggested that the exceptionally high antitumor and antibacterial activity of natural fredericamycin A (FMA) is related to its ability to spontaneously generate the superoxide anion (02-) and hydroxyl (""OH) radicals in aerobic solutions [Hilton, B. D., Misra, R., & Zweier, J. L. (1986) Biochemistry 25, 5533]. With a view to understand the mechanistic details, attempts were made to reproduce earlier electron spin resonance (ESR) evidence for the oxygenated free radical formation in well-aerated solutions of natural FMA in dimethyl sulfoxide and dilute H 20 2• Little or no evidence was obtained for the formation of the 0 2- and methoxy (""OCH3) radicals, while the detected formation of the 'OH and methyl ('CH3) radicals was attributable largely to mechanisms not involving FMA. These results thus reopen the T question regarding the mechanism of its exceptionally high tumoricidal-bacteriocidal activity. This paper reports on an electron spin resonance (ESR) investigation of the formation of oxygenated free radicals in solutions of natural fredericamycin A (abbreviated as FMA) which has recently been reported to be a highly potent anti¬tumor antibiotic (Pandey et al., 1981; Warnick-Pickle et al., 1981). The impetus for this undertaking was provided by recent reports (Hilton et al., 1986; Stinson, 1986) suggesting that the strong tumoricidal activity with high therapeutic—toxic index of FMA was related to its ability for the spontaneous generation of superoxide anion (02-) and hydroxyl (OH) radicals. For example, the suggested mechanism for the formation of 02- by FMA was (Hilton et al., 1986)FMA-OH + O2 FMA-O + H+ + 02-Here FMA—OH is simply the FMA molecule emphasizing the —OH moiety which becomes FMA-O, the free radical rep¬resenting the oxidized form of the drug. While some other highly effective anticancer drugs in current clinical application, such as bleomycin, are also thought to exert their antitumor effects via the formation of reactive drug-based or oxygenated free radicals (Carmichael et al., 1985; Gianni et al., 1983), FMA was considered unique in that only in this case the free radical formation was thought to be spontaneous, rather than through a metal- or an enzyme-activated process (Hilton et al., 1986; Stinson, 1986). Thus it was suggested (Hilton et al., 1986; Stinson, 1986) that FMA could be the forerunner of a new class of anticancer drugs. However, we noted that while the hypothesis seemed plausible, the reported ESR spectral evidence appeared to be ambiguous. Because of the high significance of the earlier conclusions (Stinson, 1986), we undertook a systematic ESR study of the radical formation in FMA solutions, and as discussed below, our conclusions disagree with those reported earlier."

The feasibility of removing sulfur dioxide by carbon monoxide reduction in a fixed-bed catalytic reactor was investigated by the Bureau of Mines. The reduction rate of sulfur dioxide with carbon monoxide was significantly dependent upon the iron and alumina content of the mixed catalyst. Maximum catalytic activity was obtained with about 40 percent iron-alumina mixture with a nominal gas mixture of 10 percent carbon monoxide, 5 percent sulfur dioxide, and the balance nitrogen. The synergistic effect of this catalyst mixture was explained by a dual reaction site mechanism, with both iron and alumina augmenting their specific sites at their interparticle contacts. The catalytic activity also increased with decreasing catalyst pellet size. With O.7-mm pellets, the entire pellet appeared to be catalytically active in a 2-gram catalyst bed. The apparent activation energy of the reaction was 18.3 kcal per mole in the temperature range of 350° to 600° C. Carbonyl sulfide (COS) was produced by the interaction of carbon monoxide and sulfur. The amount decreased with decreasing CO concentration. The ratio of COS formed per SO2 removed reached a maximum at about 400° C. The reaction rate appeared to be independent of S02 concentration in the range of 0.2 to 16 percent. The rate, however, increased directly with the CO concentration in the range of 5 to 20 percent. The presence of CO2 (<15 percent) had no appreciable effect on the rate. However, not over 0.5 percent oxygen could be tolerated. This method appears feasible for removing S02 from waste gas if the oxygen is removed prior to the catalytic S02 reduction process.

This report describes the results of a Bureau of Mines investigation in which the stress concentrations and distributions caused by inclusions in a strained elastic plate were determined, Finite element analyses were made for 168 models containing single inclusions of elliptical, ovaloidal, and rectangular shape. The variables studied included: horizontal-to-vertical loading ratios, (Sh/Sv) of 0,0.33,0.5, and 1.0; width-to-height ratios (w/h), of 0.25, 0.5, 2, and 4; and Young&apos;s modulus of inclusion to Young?s modulus of plate ratios (K ratios) of 0.33, 0.5, 2.0, and 5.0. The results show that the theory for elliptical inclusions can accurately predict the average stress along the x and y axes of symmetry for circular, ovaloidal, and rectangular inclusions from the width-to-height and K ratios. The actual inclusion shape was insignificant, suggesting that the average stresses in other inclusions of irregular shape (orebodies) can be estimated with the theory for an elliptical inclusion. An application of this technique to mining problems is presented. The stresses in the elliptical inclusions were uniform throughout the inclusion for all the models studied.

During the calendar year 1927 the United States Bureau f Mines conducted, for the third consecutive year, a safety contest among more than 250 mines and quarries. Aside from its underlying purpose to promote safety, the object of the contest was to learn which mine or quarry had completed the year&apos;s work with the smallest proportionate loss of time from accidents to its employees. Competing companies were grouped into five classes, namely, anthracite mines, bituminous teal mines, metal mines, nonmetallic mineral mines, and quarries and open-pit mines. To the winning company in each group was awarded the bronze trophy "Sentinels of Safety," the gift of The Explosives Engineer magazine. The winner in each group was the mine or quarry whose record showed the smallest loss of time from accidents in proportion to the total amount of time worked by 411 employees. This proportion is designated the "accident-severity"3 rate; it indicates the number of days of disability resulting from personal injuries per thousand man-hours of work performed by all employees. Each company&apos;s standing was determined by the Bureau of Mines from detailed records furnished by the contestants. Records of the leading companies were made known to a committee of seven men well known to the mining industry but not connected with the Bureau of Mines. This committee selected the winning companies in accordance with rules governing the Competition. According to the contest rules, the competition for the trophy was restricted to mines employing at least 50 men underground and to quarries and open-pit mines employing at least 25 men in the pit. As several plants fell below these figures during the year, their records could not be considered in connection with the award of the trophy. Figures covering these plants are, however, included in the attached tables.

"INTRODUCTION Loss of life from coal-mine explosions in the United States in 1949 was the lowest in any year since before 1870. Although fatality reports from coal nines before 1910 were incomplete,' the explosion fatalities from single disasters or individual States exceeded the 1949 total in each year as far back as 1870, when the records become fragmentary. Since 1890, the only other year in which fewer than 35 were killed was 1946, with a total of 32. Figure 1 shows the total yearly fatalities from explosions in all coal mines and those in anthracite mines alone since 1870. The fatalities in bituminous coal mines were not completely reported before 1910, but enough reports were issued by major coal-producing States to compile reasonably representative figures back to 1885. Any corrections would be additions to these totals.The reason for the moderate total of 46 explosion fatalities in 1948 and the low total of 8 killed in 1949 is thought to be the serious and careful attention devoted to elimination of coal-mine explosion hazards after the disastrous explosions in 1947. The standards now being observed generally with respect to ventilation, rock-dusting, and inspections for gas are better than those found earlier in even the mines having the best reputations for safety. Exceptions are still numerous, but they are fewer, month by month, because of the pressure of Federal and State inspections and a changing conception of the hazards that should not be permitted underground. The prevailing precautions have not eliminated all ignitions of gas or dust, but they have limited propagation to small explosions and have prevented serious loss of life.The number of ignitions (14) reported for the year was less than the average (24) for the 5 years 1944-48 and only half the average for the fiscal years 1929-44. Another favorable factor is that Bureau of Mines representatives were probably in closer contact with both small and large mines in nearly all coal-mining districts. Inspectors now assigned to individual districts are better able to keep informed on the happenings and the progress of safety in their districts. In 1948, one-fourth of the explosions were in mines that employed fewer than 10 men; this condition was duplicated in 1949."

The estimated value of world crude mineral production in 1990 exceeded $1,501.5 billion in terms of current (1990) dollars, or almost $1,160 billion in terms of constant 1983 dollars. This latter figure was 0.3% below the 1989 level and about 3.9% below the record high to date of $1,207.1 billion 1983 dollars set in 1980. Table 1 provides the latest available revised time series of the estimated value of world crude mineral production both in terms of 1983 constant dollars and in terms of current dollars. It also provides one of the two statistical bases for this estimation, this being the data on the value of production of a group of key commodities that was compiled for and published in the authoritative French language mineral industry periodical, Annales des Mines, for selected years up to 1983.1 It should be stressed that the values just discussed and those presented in the tabulation are for crude minerals only, and by no means reflect adequately the role of the entire mineral industry in the world economy. These figures represent only the value of mineral materials as they are mined or otherwise extracted from the earth. They do not reflect the value added to these materials through downstream processing within the facilities commonly accepted as mineral industry plants. That is, value added through beneficiation of ores, smelting, refining, and similar processing is not included in these figures. Comprehensive world data on the value added by such processing are not available; however, a conservative estimate of the total value of pro-cessed output from mineral industry plants derived wholly from primary (newly mined) materials would be on the order of about $2,780 billion constant 1983 dollars or $3,600 billion in terms of 1990 dollars.

During 1984, minerals exploited in Burundi included gold, kaolin, lime, and peat. Over 1,100 troy ounces of gold was extracted and traded during the year as a result of the lifting of the Government ban on gold mining in mid-1983 and the establishment of an artisan mining program and licensed trading counters. Almost 2,000 tons of kaolin was mined for the manufacture of insecticides. Lime production was for domestic fertilizer applications. Amoco International and the Government signed an accord late in the year for a petroleum exploration program covering 600,000 acres of Burundi&apos;s onshore Ruzizi Plain and part of northeastern Lake Tanganyika. Amoco was expected to begin the exploration program by mid-1985. Anticipated program costs could run as high as $200 million.2 The Finnish company Ekono Oy completed its peat industrial energy development studies for the Buyongwe peat deposits of northern Burundi by the end of the year. The project assessed the quantity and fuel quality of 13,000 hectares of peatland and was part of a larger study for developing the Musangati lateritic nickel deposits of Burundi, estimated at 3% of the world&apos;s reserves of nickel. The Buyongwe peat would fuel dryers and an electrical generating plant for supplying power to nickel ore processing facilities. Briquetted peat would also be used as a substitute for wood and charcoal, presently the main sources of rural energy in the country and rapidly depleting because of deforestation. The study also evaluated the most economical methods to harvest the peat bogs. The study was financed by the International Development Association (IDA), United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Finnish Aid-Finnida, and the Burundi Government.

A radiotracer technique developed by the Bureau of Mines extends to the parts-per-billion range the sensitivity for determining contributors of deposits formed in stored and thermally stressed jet fuels. The method depends upon measuring radioactivity associated with thermally induced deposits from fuels containing one labeled compound. The technique was applied to 88 test blends, representing 12 fuels and nine carbon-l4 labeled fuel constituents or fuel additives, or both. Data from results of these tests are included in this report. With this radiotracer technique, the contribution of fuel components and additives to thermally induced deposits in a variety of fuel environments was estimated before and after storage.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the product-of-combustion (POC) characteristics of combustible materials used in typical coal mining operations in a series of experiments conducted in an intermediate-scale fire tunnel. The materials examined include wood cribs, transformer fluid, coal, conveyor belting, brattice cloth, and ventilation ducting. Smoke and toxic gases evolved from burning materials contribute to panic conditions and hinder escape. Smoke irritates and obscures vision, while toxic gases physically debilitate and disorient the victims. However, POC emissions may be used for early warning fire detection. POC levels will vary not only between materials but also between stages of combustion and the conditions in which they are burning. This report summarizes the POC characteristics of each material and evaluates their effectiveness for early warning mine fire detection. Results show that smoke was the POC most readily detected from the smoldering materials tested.

The quantitative determination of salt in petroleum ins generally divided into two steps - (1) extraction of salt from the oil and (2) accurate measurement of the extracted salt. This paper presents a method used by the Bureau of Mines for quantitatively extracting the water-soluble chloride salts4/ from petroleum and discusses important details attendant on the success of the method. Among these details are homogeneity in the dispersion of salt crystals, emulsified brine and other impurities in the oil sample, complete solution of the salt, and total extraction and titration of all the aqueous phase. Recently, the chlorides of sodium, calcium, and. magnesium produced with and present in various oils have developed growing problems of salt deposition and corrosion in the petroleum industry. Therefore, a technical study of various emulsions and salts that accompany petroleum is being made by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the State of Oklahoma. One report (5)5 reviewing the literature pertinent to the study has been published.

The several commodity and area chapters contain further details on production. A summary table comparing world and U.S. mineral production also is included. Mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing. The stage of measurement used in the chapter is normally what is termed ?mine output." It usually refers to minerals in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes for some minerals the product of auxiliary processing operations at or near mines.

"INTRODUCTION During September 1944, the Bureau of Mines undertook a program of investigation and limited exploratory drilling at the Last Chance mine, near the village of Arthur in Grant County, Wisconsin, as part of a general investigation of the zinc-producing area of southwestern Wisconsin when every effort was being made to increase the production of metals important to the Nation's war program.The Bureau's attention was directed, to the Last Chance mine when the operators discovered high percentages of zinc in an exploratory churn drill hole a short distance southeast of the mine. The ore was found in the Trenton Limestone, which underlies the ore horizon then being mined. To determine whether this discovery was important, and to demonstrate the possible extension of the ore the Bureau of Mines drilled five additional holes in the vicinity of the discovery.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Nines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. A whole mine, computer-controlled communication and monitoring system for both normal and emergency use is installed and operating in the U.S. Steel Robena Mine complex near Uniontown, Pa. Portions of the system, including the coaxial cable and the key underground and surf ace phones, have been operating for over a year and a half. During this time the basic concept has been modified and new line amplifiers with directional switches have been developed to eliminate some problems in implementing the loopback feature. The quality of the audio and the availability of the system have been outstanding. Since early summer almost all subsystems have been completed. The experience with the telephone system itself, the pocket-pager call alert, section wireless radio, hoistphone, television, environmental monitoring, control and monitoring of equipment, voicedownlink/code uplink post disaster communications, post disaster through-the-earth monitoring, and the system center failure diagnostic routines are reviewed.

The Track Rock corundum mine was among the numerous corundum deposits investigated during the war by the Bureau of Mines in an effort to develop domestic reserves of that critical mineral. In the investigation of this property 562 feet of trenches were excavated and a l25-foot adit was reopened for the purpose of locating veins to of corundum which had been previously reported to occur in that locality. Only very minor amounts of corundum were disclosed in both the surface workings and the adit. The project was begun in May 1943 and completed in November 1943.

Exports of agricultural products, mostly coffee, continued to account for more than 90% of Burundi&apos;s foreign exchange revenue. The country&apos;s ban on commercial mining was lifted in 1987. Mining of peat for fuel, limestone for agriculture, and clay for insecticides continued as in previous years. At yearend, Burundi&apos;s external debt stood at almost $700 million.2 Amoco Burundi, a subsidiary of the Amoco Petroleum Co., drilled two exploration wells in northern Lake Tanganyika in 1987. No oil was found, but preliminary findings were encouraging enough that further seismic surveys and offshore and onshore drilling exploration were planned in 1988. Any oil or gas finds would have substantial impact on the Burundian economy because a major portion of the country&apos;s trade deficit was directly attributable to petroleum and gas imports. The Zaire Government agreed in June to let Amoco Burundi explore Zaire&apos;s side of Tanganyika using the same equipment and personnel being used in Burundi.
