This chapter summarizes data on crude nonfuel mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Included also are the tables that show the principal nonfuel mineral commodities exported from and imported into the United States and that compare world and U.S. mineral production. The detailed data from which these tables were derived are contained in the individual commodity chapters of Volume I and in the State chapters of Volume II of this edition of the Minerals Yearbook. Although crude mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing, the stage of measurement used in this chapter is what is normally termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals or ores in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes the output from auxiliary processing at or near the mines.

This report describes Bureau of Mines laboratory test results in electro-kinetic dewatering and consolidation of metal-mine mill tailings from five mines in the Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, district. Classified (coarse) tailings, slimes, and unclassified material were separately tested. Tailings were placed in 0.3 ft3 plexiglass models, and dc potential was applied until dewatering ceased. Time-oriented measurements of water removal, changes in resistivity, and power consumption were recorded during the dewatering process. Moisture content and density of the dewatered material at test end indicated the method to be generally effective for all materials examined, but best results were achieved with well-mixed unclassified tailings.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the Department of Energy, has attempted to increase the activity of nickel catalysts for converting synthesis gas, derived from coal, to a substitute natural gas. This report describes the effects of low-level additions of B, Ca, Ce, Co, Mn, Mo, Pd, Re, Ti, Y, Zn, and Zr on the methanation activity of Raney nickel. The methanation rate at 320° C and the resistance to poisoning by 2 ppm H2S were used to compare catalysts. The effects of the additions were small, and the experimental variances were large, necessitating the use of statistical methods to identify significant effects. Co, Ti, Y, and Zn improved the resistance to H2S poisoning, but only Co improved the methanation rate In some individual catalysts containing Ca, Mo, or Mn, both the methanation rate and resistance to H2S poisoning were improved.

Preliminary studies by the Bureau of Mines were conducted to determine the feasibility of a multiple-compartment, ion-exchange (MCIX) column simulator for examining the effect of multiple-orifice plates in the column. A rectangular, five-orifice, three-compartment, MCIX simulator with a cross-sectional plate area of 0.66 ft2 was used for the investigation. Orifices with open areas of 1, 3, and 5 percent were used with various operating conditions. The study was separated into three separate sections: (1) solution flow effect, (2) fluidization effect, and (3) resin transfer effect. The solution flow and fluidization studies showed that for solution flow rates of about 3 gpm/ft2, a I-percent open area plate functioned best, while at solution flow rates of 9 and 15 gpm/ft2, the best open areas were 3 and 5 percent, respectively.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines examined the wettability of bituminous and subbituminous coals before and after exposure to ambient air atmosphere, as part of an ongoing project investigating the coal-wetting abilities of surfactant solutions intended for the suppression of dust during coal mining operations. Exposure periods were generally 7 days or less, and the changes in wetting response were measured with a capillary penetration apparatus. Wetting solutions tested included a nonionic surfactant, two anionic surfactants, and pure distilled water. After exposure, higher ranked bituminous coals treated with nonionic surfactant solution and pure water showed increased wettability, but lower ranked subbituminous coals showed decreased wettability. With the anionic surfactants, the coals demonstrated opposite responses. The wettability changes appeared to be related to the coal moisture content. These changes may be amplified by specific, but incompletely understood, interactions between surfactant polar groups, absorbed water, and the coal surface.

"Natural gas-gasoline is made by collecting in the liquid state the condensable hydrocarbon vapors that exist in different natural gases in varying amounts. In the richer type of natural gas the gasoline is generally recovered by compression and cooling. If exceedingly high pressure or low temperature is used, there is dissolved in the gasoline a large amount of very volatile material, which evaporates rapidly at atmospheric temperature and pressure.In the leaner type of natural gas, the gasoline vapors are selectively absorbed from the permanent gases by passing the natural gas through an absorbing oil. The gasoline is recovered by distilling the saturated oil, and as compared with ""compression"" gasoline is of high Baume' gravity and low vapor pressure. Before a volatile gasoline can be transported in tank cars, it is necessary to decrease its volatility in order to lessen the risk of fire or explosion, as well as to prevent excessive evaporation in transit. This can be accomplished either by weathering the gasoline, or by blending it with a more stable material, naphtha being commonly used in the weathering process the more volatile portions of the gasoline are allowed to evaporate and the losses in volume are very large, therefore, blending is preferable, wherever possible.It is very difficult, however, to produce by blending, in gasoline plants, a motor fuel which is equal to straight-run refinery gasoline. In order to make a blended motor fuel of a grade equal to straight-run gasoline, only a small percentage of natural gas-gasoline can be blended with the naphtha, consequently it is customary to blend the gasoline with only enough naphtha to enable It to be shipped to an oil refinery when the material is again blended to form a finished motor fuel."

"IntroductionThe accumulation of gummy and resinous deposits in consumers' gas meters began to assume serious proportions about 1917. As the trouble developed and spread in the years following, it manifested itself in several ways, which ultimately began to the expressible in distinctly economic terms, more specifically in terms of costs; in 1922 an organized and fundamentally based investigation of this trouble was begun. In an earlier paper*** a short statement of the occurrence and costs of the deposition was given and at the same time an analysis of the problem, as well as well as a general plan of attack, was presented. That plan included two general phases, first, a chemical study of typical was 1 quarry or 2 cosinous content , mauformly consituents, rmln and selected subjects; and secondly, a comparative survey of plants affected and sufficient therewith, attention being paid to construction, operation, meter conditions and related data. During the summer of 1973 we were asked to perform a theoretical investigation of the propagation of low frequency (LF) radio waves down deep (10,000 feet) hoistshafts* for the case where the hoist cable ("rope") is the only metal conductor present. Propagation is by means of the TEM coaxial mode of transmission in which the hoist cable serves as the inner conductor and the surrounding rock acts as the outer conductor. Since the rock is a relatively poor electrical conductor the current in the outer conductor of the coaxial line is not confined to a very thin surface layer as in a metal coaxial cable, but spreads radially to a distance that is generally many times the shaft diameter. This feature of the wave propagation requires a more sophisticated theoretical treatment than the approximate skin-depth theory that is adequate for metal coaxial lines. In this Part we treat the hoist shaft wave propagation loss, characteristic impedance, and the field current distributions in the surrounding rock medium. We also show that the large penetration of the wave into the rock outer conductor does not present a difficult problem with regard to coupling the transmitter or receiver to the transmission line with a minimum of insertion loss, but that the large impedance mismatch caused by the capacitance termination between the cage and shaft wall may well be the most significant contribution to overall system loss. Inductive coupling and impedance matching to the hoist rope/shaft transmission line are also treated briefly. Preliminary results indicate that a broad minimum in overall system loss should occur between 100 kHz and 1 MHz, possibly centered around 300 kHz. Further work is needed to better quantify this signal loss behavior, compare it with hoist shaft electromagnetic noise spectral data recently acquired by NBS, and identify the most favorable operating frequencies.

Not long after electrically driven equipment was introduced into coal mines it became apparent that the spark-producing parts, such as controllers and motors, required safeguards to prevent the ignition of mine gas that might come into their vicinity. Many of the early designs attempted to provide protective enclosures having ventila¬tion and relief for pressures if ignition should occur within. The principal feature of the Davy safety lamp, namely, the wire gauze, was employed widely for this purpose. Other devices were developed to reduce the temperature of products of combustion escaping through the protected openings to a value below that which would cause ignition of surrounding explosive atmospheres. Although many such devices performed their intended function satisfactorily under laboratory conditions they were not so satisfac¬tory when subjected to the rigorous conditions encountered under¬ground. Corrosion, mishandling, and accumulations of grease and dirt reduced or destroyed their protective qualities after a period of service in the mines. In the United States this has led to abandon¬ment of special devices in favor of what is called " total enclosure " which means that no regular provision is made for ventilation and release of pressure but rather that the housings or enclosures are built strong enough to withstand the explosion pressures without rupture. As a further protection the joints usually are made of broad, closely fitting surfaces. It is impractical to make such joints absolutely gastight in ordinary machine practice when provision must be made for partial or complete disassembly to facilitate ad¬justments and repairs. Therefore, when an explosion occurs within such enclosures flames may escape through the joints. If the latter are broad enough and not separated too widely, however, the flames will be cooled by contact with the metal surfaces (flanges) of the joints, by rapid expansion, or by both cooling and expansion, with the result that an explosive atmosphere surrounding the enclosure will not be ignited. This Bureau of Mines study was made to investigate a possible method for selectively removing the Si02 component of silicate minerals and ores. Of specific interest were aluminum ores and zircon. Methods are described for removing Si02 from these ores as volatile silicon sulfides by treating the ore with sulfur and carbon; with sulfur, carbon, and a reducing gas; or with sulfur compounds and carbon. Comparative results are also given for the desilication of some of the ores with carbon alone to form volatile silicon monoxide. The silica component can be removed partially from bauxites at temperatures above the sublimation temperature of SiS (940° C) by treatment with carbon, sulfur, and methane; however, it is more difficult to remove the silicon from kyanite, manganese silicate, red muds from aluminum processing, kaolinite, lateritic nickel ores, and zircon. Complete desilication requires temperatures ranging from 1,100° C for bauxite to 1,450° C for zircon. Although the high temperatures required and the undesirable metal sulfides produced eliminate practical application of this method using present technology, the Bureau is reporting this data so that they will be available to future investigators.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory-scale flammability experiments to investigate the possible use of water spray systems for inerting or quenching mine-gas ignitions, such as those encountered at the working face of a coal mine. The inerting results for premixed methane-air-water mixtures indicated that water droplets of less than 10 µm tend to be as effective as the vapor. Water requirements for inerting such mixtures were much smaller than those for quenching the sustained flame propagation by the application of water sprays. The minimum water mass concentration for quenching methane-air flames increased linearly with increasing droplet diameter (surface weighted mean) and decreased with increasing spray temperature, whereas the droplet surface area required per unit volume was essentially constant for a given gas mixture composition. Data extrapolations indicated that a quenching system may be feasible for the longwall mining application.

Mineral production was confined to out-put of cement and gravel. However, exploration was being conducted by the U.S.S.R. and the United Nations Development Program. Development of a domestic limestone deposit and crude oil from an offshore oilfield was underway. Benin's currency remained fixed to the French franc. The gross domestic product (GDP) was $977 million in 1981, the latest year for which information was available. 2 COMMODITY REVIEW Cement.-Construction of a cement plant with 500,000 tons per year capacity neared completion at Pobé. The operator of the plant, using locally produced limestone, was the Societe des Ciments d'Onigbolo, a joint venture between Benin and Nigeria. Nigeria was expected to utilize most of the cement produced. Equipment for the plant included a 1,600-ton-per-day, oil-fired pre-heater.

The results of full-scale fire tests are used to determine optimum distributions of fire sensors for the protection of conveyor belt haulageways in underground coal mines. Empirical relationships are derived that relate the spacing of fire sensors to the rate of development of the fire hazard. For this application, a critical fire size is defined as that size of fire for which belt ignition and subsequent flame spread down the belt is assured. Detection and alarm, regardless of sensor type or sensing methodology, must be achieved at some point in time before the critical fire size is reached. Based upon this approach, it is found that the horizontal spacing for products-of-combustion sensors is in the range of 300 to 600 meters, while the required thermal sensor spacing is found to be ~4 meters or less. Additional design criteria are discussed for product-of-combustion fire sensing systems.

Low-temperature heat capacities, high-temperature enthalpy increments, and the enthalpy of formation at 298° K were determined calorimetrically for vanadium subnitride (VN0.465). The low-temperature investigation gave S°298.15 = 6.379 ±0.005 cal/deg mole, and a combustion calorimeter investiga¬tion provided ?Hf°298.15 = -31.80 ±0.60 kcal/mole. The two quantities were combined with the high-temperature data to give standard values of enthalpies of formation and free energies of formation above 298° K. These and related thermodynamic functions were tabulated to 1,800° K. Similar data are included in the range of 298° to 1,600° K for the mononitride, VN.

"In presenting this list of permissible explosives and blasting devices, the Bureau of Mines desires to call attention to pages 20 and 25 outlining the conditions in use under which, and only under which, the explosive or blasting device is permissible.In view of a recent publication recounting trade practice favoring the use of a blasting device without stemming, particular emphasis is placed upon condition 4 on page 20 and condition 2 on page 25. An explosive or a blasting device enumerated in the permissible lists of this Bureau is not permissible in use unless it is properly confined with clay or other incombustible stemming.PERMISSIBLE EXPLOSIVES TESTED UNDER SCHEDULE 17CAn active list of permissible explosives was published in October 1938 as part of Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 3421, under the title ""Active List of Permissible Explosives and. This list included 191 brand names.Changes in the list that have been authorized to June 30, 1939, placed 56 additional brands of permissible explosives on the active permissible list as a result of tests, changes in brand names, or transfer from the inactive list. Digestion studies were undertaken to develop a method for the rapid dissolution of high-temperature ferroalloy scrap. Laboratory tests showed: (1) dissolution of alloy scrap with ferric ion as the leaching agent was a moderately rapid method of digestion; (2) the dissolution process can be considered as a typical reaction of a metal with chlorine gas, although evidence was obtained to show dissolution as a two-step process, one step as the reduction of ferric ion by the soluble alloy constituents and the other as the oxidation of ferrous ion with chlorine gas; and (3) the attack of ferric ion on the alloy was a function of alloy composition, ferric to ferrous ion ratio, and area of contact between leach solution and alloy. The exceedingly complex nature of alloy compositions and dissolution products generally precluded satisfactory analytical determinations. Results of moderate accuracy were obtained using complex modifications of standard analytical and spectrographic techniques.

Carbonate minerals constitute a major fraction of the oil shale in Colorado's Green River Formation. Quantification of carbonate minerals is important for the characterization of oil shale, particularly because of their thermal activity in production of oil from shale. The carbonate minerals found in this oil shale are nahcolite (NaHCO3), dawsonite [NaA1(OH)2CO3], dolomite [(Mg1-xFx)Ca(CO3)2], calcite (CaCO3), and ferroan [(Mg1-xFex)CO3]. Although carbonate minerals can be removed by acid extraction from the balance of the oil shale, direct determination of carbonate minerals is complicated by the occurrence of the same cations in more than one mineral. A method for assigning the acid-soluble cations to the individual carbonate minerals was developed from two assumptions based on oil shale geochemistry: (1) Calcite and ferroan do not occur together, and (2) the ratio of iron and magnesium is the same in dolomite and ferroan. These assumptions were tested by the Bureau of Mines by applying the technique for assigning cations to 219 samples from the saline section of the formation. The reported carbonate mineral amounts were compared statistically with X-ray diffraction peak heights, verifying the cation assignment method.

The Bureau of Mines investigated a hydrometallurgical procedure to recover Co, Ni, and Cu from an electrolytic zinc industrial copper filter cake. The copper filter cake is presently unmarketable or of low value because economic and environmentally acceptable processing technology is lacking. Research by the Bureau of Mines has developed a multistage process for recovering or recycling over 93 pct of the Zn, Cd, Cu, Co, and Ni from this material. The stages involved are (1) wet sizing, (2) H2S04 leaching of undersized material, (3) H2S04-Mn02 leaching of H2S04 leach residue, (4) selective precipitation of As, Cu, and Co-Ni products, and (5) precipitation of manganese for recycling to the leach circuit. The final process residue is only 1.6 wt-pct of the initial cake and consists of lead sulfate.
