This document, prepared for the U.S. Bureau of Mines Regional Mineral Assessment Program, presents data pertinent to the mineral resource assessment of the Needles 1° x 2° map quadrangle (excluding the Arizona portion), located in the Mojave Desert southeastern California. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) mineral survey of the quadrangle, conducted from 1991 to 1993, was done to provide the minerals data necessary to support effective land use planning and resource decision making. To this end, this report (1) inventories historic and current mining activity, (2) inventories identified resources, (3) provides an economic analysis; of identified mineral resources and estimates their feasibility for development, (4) delineates areas of exploration and development potential based on current geological, geochemical, and geophysical information, (5) supplies information on land status, transportation networks, power supplies, water availability, and regulations, and (6) analyzes socio-economic impacts of potential mining. The Needles quadrangle is in the Basin and Range province of the southwestern United Van. The area is underlain by a lithologically and structurally complex Proterozoic crystalline basement of gneiss and granite that is overlain by sparse, scattered outcrops of deformed and metamorphosed Late Proterozoic and Paleozoic sedimentary sequences. Mesozoic granitic plutons, particularly in the western half of the quadrangle, intruded the basement and sedimentary rocks, resulting in metamorphism and deformation responsible for the formation of high-grade gneisses and mylonitic rocks (core complex) in the eastern part of the quadrangle. Voluminous Tertiary volcanism unconformably overlie some older sequences. The structure of the area is dominated by Basin and Range extensional block faulting; in the eastern part of the area, block faulting is accompanied by widespread low-angle detachment faulting associated with core complex development.

Sampling to determine development potential of beryllium deposits was conducted at 31 New England localities. A total of 54 additional areas where the geochemical environment appeared favorable were sampled to determine if economically interesting percentages of beryllia (BeO) might occur. Newry Hill-Plumbago Mountain, Maine, Iron Mountain, N.H., and Long Island, Maine, were investigated in some detail to determine the size and grade of deposits. The mineralized pegmatites at Newry Hill-Phunbago Mountain are extensive but very low grade; at Iron Mountain the ore bodies are very rich but of small volume; at Long Island beryl occurs with molybdenite, wolframite, and scheelite, but the tonnage of ore was not determined.

"The analysis of water produced with crude petroleum has interested oil producers since inception of the industry. Records of the first analysis of mineralized water produced from an oil-productive formation are obscure, and references to the first use of brine analyses to assist in solving problems of petroleum production are not available in the technical literature. However, many early reports of the Federal Bureau of Mines 5-8/ and. Federal Geological Survey, 9-11/ as well as articles in engineering and geological placed special emphasis on journals ,12-l4/ the importance, interpretation, and application of water analyses.One of the earliest applications of water analyses, and still a major one today, is for identification of intrusive waters in oil wells. This may be done by comparing the chemical constituents of a sample of water indigenous to the oil-productive formation with those of samples from upper, water-bearing formations within the same general area. Some earlier investigators recognized the need for analyzing samples of all waters encountered in drilling operations. Ambrose15/ stated, in part, ""In wells being drilled, the engineer should grasp every opportunity to get a true sample of water from each sand. . .,"" and, ""The waters of each oil field are chemically different from those of another field."" The validity of the latter observation and the importance of the former one have been borne out by comparing the results of analyses of many samples and noting the differences in relative concentrations of like constituents of waters from the same geological formation in different localities or oil pools."

For the purpose of comparing the amounts of dust produced by various mining operations, samples of atmospheric dust were collected during a complete cycle of drilling, blasting and mucking at or near the face of the Bureau's Mount Weather testing adit while the efficiency of several types of stemming in metal-mine blasting was being investigated. The U.S. Bureau of Hines conducted e mineral resource survey of approximately 232,000 acres in part of the Humboldt National Forest, Nevada, during 1989. About 7S percent of the study area was covered with mining claims. About 1,800 samples were collected end analyzed for 16 elements. Geologic structure, including thrust faults, is the most important factor in the localization of mineral deposits in the study area. The Independence mine (formerly Jerritt Canyon), Big Springs, and Wood Gulch are the most well known active properties, all developed on large, low-grade, disseminated gold deposits. These deposits have produced almost 3 million ounces of gold and are known to contain more than 8 million ounces of gold. At least 10 barite deposits in the south end of the range have had significant past production and contain 0.2 million tons of resources. Numerous precious and base metal targets have been identified and in some cases quantified during this study.

Its effectiveness in this connection has been demonstrated not only by research but by actual coal-mine explosions in which hundreds of lives have been saved because of its presence. In a general way this paper gives pertinent facts concerning rock-dusting practices in the United States. Information has been obtained from many reliable sources, and various coal-mining companies have furnished data on cost and other details.

This chapter summarizes data on crude nonfuel mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Included also are the tables that show the principal nonfuel mineral commodities exported from and imported into the United States and that compare world and U.S. mineral production. The detailed data from which these tables were derived are contained in the individual commodity chapters of volume I and in the State chapters of volume II of this edition of the Minerals Yearbook. Although crude mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing, the stage of measurement used in this chapter is what is ordinarily termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals or ores in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes the output from auxiliary processing at or near the mines.

This investigation was undertaken to develop a more efficient copper smelting practice that would help meet the increasingly stringent antipollution standards. Continuous smelting to copper and a 0.8-to 5-percent copper slag using pure oxygen has been demonstrated for several hours at a time in a unique double furnace, which was devised to overcome the heat losses inherent in a laboratory furnace. The use of pure oxygen to effect the smelting and conversion of copper sulfide concentrate in a single unit to produce blister copper and a very high S02 concentration provides a much reduced gas volume for more economical and thorough sulfur recovery. Although the process was successfully demonstrated for several hours at a time, extended test work using longer runs will be required to balance the system and to obtain test data for adequately demonstrating its technical feasibility.

The Bureau of Mines has reviewed those portions of the "Tariff Schedules of the United States Annotated 1963" that are of interest to the minerals industry. This study shows to what extent rates of duty were altered (increased or decreased), and provides a bridge where possible from the old Schedule A classification sys tem to the new TSUS system of statistical reporting of import data. In general the new tariff has corrected previous classification defects and inconsistencies, but the rates of duties have not been materially changed.

7253. Arkhangelsky, A. D. Geological Results of the General Magnetometric and Gravimetric Surveys of the U.S.S.R. (in Russian). Internat. Geol. Cong., Rep. of the 17th Sess., Moscow-Leningrad, 1937, vol. 1, Moscow, 1939, pp. 241-250. Geophysical methods have been used in the U.S.S.R. to study geological problems. Such is the case of the general magnetometric and gravimetric surveys made jointly by the Main Physical Observatory, Main Office of Geodesy and Cartography, Institute of Terrestrial Magnetism, and Main Office of Geophysical Prospecting. Some institutions supplied the data, others processed them. Geological interpretation was made by the author. (1) Regional magnetic anomalies in the plains of the U.S.S.R. are traceable to the folded substratum overlain by sedimentary rocks; these anomalies promise to yield data characterizing the substratum in respect to strike and depth. Anomalies in European U.S.S.R. suggest that the pre-Cambrian -substratum of the East European plateau consists of elements of different ages. In the most ancient of them, the main strike of the folding is almost latitudinal; in the younger ones, the folding is oriented in the meridian. (2) The Faye and Bouguer gravity anomalies are caused primarily by differences in the density of rocks composing the upper crust and by unknown processes producing changes of density at depth; these processes are not connected with isosiatic movements. The anomalies in the European and adjoining Asiatic U.S.S.R. promise to indicate the volume of the pre-Cambrian massif of the east-European plateau and to clarify the interrelations between the Ural, Tian-Shan, and Donetz Basin folding systems, as well as between the Dnieper-Donetz depression and the mid-European depression. - V. "Underground mine fires can significantly influence mine ventilation airstreams, in some cases throttling or even reversing airflows. As a result, the performance of a metal and nonmetal mine stench fire warning system, which depends on the ventilation to carry the vital warning signal, under fire conditions is different from performance under nonfire conditions. The safety of underground miners can be jeopardized if the warning signal is delayed. This Bureau of Mines report describes research to investigate fire and stench warning system interactions. A computer model is presented that permits quantitative analysis of stench warning signal delays as a function of fire location and intensity. The results of a case study involving computer simulations of stench distribution in a hypothetical mine network subject to various fire exposures are also discussed. This case study illustrates a technique for identifying the areas within a mine that are subject to unacceptable warning signal delays, thereby enabling preemptive action by mine personnel, such as redeployment of stench injectors. INTRODUCTIONFires are an ever-present threat to the safety of underground miners. Since the smoke and toxic gas produced by a mine fire can be spread rapidly by the mine's ventilation system, mine evacuation must be accomplished as quickly as possible in the event of fire. In metal and nonmetal mines, the most common means of passing the fire warning signal to each miner is the stench system. The typical stench system utilizes ethyl mercaptan, a highly odoriferous organic compound, injected on the surface into the compressed and/or ventilation airstreams. Upon smelling the stench, workers evacuate the mine according to an emergency preplan.Although the stench system has been used successfully for over 60 yr, it has several serious shortcomings, owing to certain chemical properties of ethyl mercaptan and to certain performance characteristics and limitations of present injection systems.Recent Bureau research succeeded in upgrading the overall safety and effectiveness of the stench system through the use of a superior stench odorant and the development of improved stench injection equipment (1).4 This research has also investigated a specialized computer simulation model capable of calculating the precise concentration of stench in any mine ventilation network branch at any time after stench release (2). An adaptation of the computer model now enables the analysis of stench system and ventilation system interactions under the influence of a mine fire."

Full-column anchored resin bolts were first used in underground mines in 1972. These bolts appear to improve support in many roof bolt applications, as indicated by the use of about 30 million resin bolts in 1980. In the mid-1970's, Bureau of Mines in-vestigators began looking for a substitute for resin because of its short supply and rapidly increasing price. The investigators selected accelerated gypsum plaster (CaSO. ·1/2H20), which becomes gypsum (CaSO.· 2H20) when mixed with water. Gypsum makes an effective alternate grout material because it hardens quickly, is readily available, and is inexpensive in comparison with other cementitious materials. The Bureau received a patent (U.s. patent 4,096,944) for a system combining water capsules (wax-encapsulated water) with plaster into cartridges resembling resin cartridges. This report presents the results of tests conducted by the Bureau on the plaster, the water capsules, and their combined use in cartridges. The tests were designed to determine how the gypsum-plaster water capsule bolting system performs and what happens in the hole while the bolt is being inserted through the cartridge. The test results indicate that water capsule plaster cartridges are a workable alternative to resin cartridges under normal or dry conditions.

This Bureau of Mines report discusses the electric-arc reduction of zirconium and hafnium oxides with carbon yielding a metal-metallic carbide mixture. The carbon to oxide ratio in the feed determines the metal to carbide ratio in the product. A sample of this product was produced -or testing as a feed for the deBoer iodide-dissociation process. A new technique for producing pure carbides is described, which uses the intense heat of the arc to volatilize the carbide. In 1984 and 1985, at the request of the U.S. Forest Service, the U.S. Bureau of Mines examined the 87,720-acre South Boise Yuba study area (formerly known as RARE II Wilderness Recommended area I-4553) to evaluate mineral resources. The study area and additions are in Blaine, Camas, and Elmore Counties, 10, about 60 mi east of Boise. Granitic rocks of the Cretaceous age Idaho Batholith occupy the western two-thirds of the study area. A Tertiary age granitic complex has intruded, and broken into small blocks, Paleozoic age sedimentary rocks in the eastern third of the study area. Tertiary Challis Volcanics overlie both of these rock types. Principal mineralized structures are gold-and silver-bearing quartz veins and shear zones trending northwest to easterly in the Cretaceous granitic rocks. Copper, lead, and zinc are accessory metals in many mineralized structures.

The objectives of this project were to: (1) determine the extent to which maintainability design concepts and principles have been applied to the design of underground coal mining equipment, (2) try to assess its impact on productivity and personnel safety, and (3) develop maintainability guidelines to enhance the design of new or rebuilt equipment. An equipment design review was completed at ten operational coal mines. The purpose was to identify design approaches and features that enhanced and degraded the maintenance process. Mine management, safety, and maintenance personnel were also interviewed to identify machine specific design problems. Six original equipment manufacturers were visited and the procedures used to enhance the maintainability of Their equipment discussed. Volume I of the Final Technical Report presents an overview of procedures and protocol used and a summary of the findings. Volume II includes the maintainability design guide for mobile underground mining equipment.

"Electricity as a means of transmitting power was introduced in coal mines of the United States about 1891 for both haulage and coal cutting, only a few years after electrical haulage was first installed on street cars. At first, the hazards of electrical ignition ere not appreciated and the general use of open lights and black blasting powder made the possibility of electrical ignition of fire damp seem small by comparison.5 The possibility of igniting coal dust directly by electric sparks or arcs had not been considered.In the nine years prior to 1900, the progress of introducing electricity underground was slow, except that it was used for lighting shaft bottoms. Electricity had to contend with the more general use of compressed air for coal-cutting machines and, in mainline haulage, with the use of mule-teams and endless and tail-rope systems. During this period, great improvements were made in electrical apparatus, in surface installations as well as in mines. By 1900, therefore, the technique of applying electricity in mines had so far developed that it rapidly drove out the use of compressed air in coal mines because of the comparative ease of its installation and the marked economic advantages of its use over that of compressed air in practically all kinds of mining machines except percussion. rock drills.At this time, however, little thought was given to the hazard of indiscriminate use of electricity causing explosions and fires, and the possibility of electricity causing direct ignition of coal dust had not been considered. On December6, 1907, however, the Monongah, West Va. mine explosion occurred. This was the greatest mine disaster this country has over had, 361 men being killed. Although: there was much diversity of opinion, as to the origin of the explosion, many well-informed engineers concluded that the cause was ignition of coal dust do to wreckage of a runaway trip in a rope haulage entrance slope. This slope also served as a ventilating and it extended from the level of the coal bed to the surface. The runaway trip tore down electric cables and stirred up a cloud of dust when it was wrecked at the bottom of the slope. The dust was probably ignited by the electric arcing that occurred when the wires were knocked down. (Another but less probable source of ignition was the open flames of miners lamps.) From the foot of the slops the explosion appeared to have travelled into the mine, spreading as it went. If this ignition of coal dust was the origin of the explosion, it occurred on pure intake air entering directly from the surface."

A theoretical analysis is presented for the static and dynamic response of wire rope in deep-shaft mining operations. Expressions for the stresses in the individual wires of complex wire ropes are derived, and specific results for simple strands, 7x7 ropes, 6x 19 Seale ropes both with and without internal-wire-rope cores, and 6x25 filler-wire ropes both with and without internal-wire-rope cores, are presented for the case of ropes subjected to a combination of axial loading and bending over a sheave. Consideration is also given to the dynamic overloading associated with certain mining operations, such as dumping ore into a suspended skip and accelerating a fully loaded skip upward. Experiments to determine the axial stiffness of wire rope are described. Factors affecting the service life of wire rope, such as residual stresses, contact stresses, and fatigue behavior, are discussed. Specific research areas in need of further investigation are identified.

Important quantities of gold, silver, platinum-group metals, selenium, tellurium, and arsenic are recovered in the processing of copper concentrates. The objective of this Bureau of Mines study was to determine the occurrence of these elements in copper ores and to trace their distribution during subsequent processing steps. The study describes the important areas supplying concentrates, precipitates, and unrefined copper to the copper smelting and refining industry in a composite of the years 1971-74. The relative importance of these areas as a source of the respective byproducts is assessed. The lack of certain quantitative and assay data, recycling of dusts and slags, and the addition of scrap to the feed often complicates calculations and estimations of the byproducts in the smelter-refinery throughputs. Such volatile or low-boiling point elements as arsenic, selenium, and tellurium may be lost in gaseous and other emissions in various processing stages, or they may be concentrated in slags and residues for which samples were not available. The effects of antipollution legislation to improve control of sulfurous and other emissions that may affect recovery of certain byproducts was noted. A section on newer technology illustrating hydro-metallurgical techniques that may affect the recovery of minor metals is included.

A demonstration project has been completed to reduce the operator sound level of an underground service vehicle, a personnel dispatch wagon, to go dB(A) or less. The program objective was to implement quieting recommendations made on an earlier study for the USBM n diesel-powered mine equipment. The manufacturer and mine to which the vehicle was going actively participated in the program to ensure a product that was not only quiet, but useful. The key element of the quieting package is an engine part a1 enclosure, which, with several complementary noise control components, reduced the operator sound level 14 dB, from 101 dB(A) to 87 dB(A). The vehicle underwent a 4-month trial period, with no degradation in the quieting package. Mine personnel reported no maintenance difficulties, and were enthusiastic about the dispatch.
