The objective of blasting is twofold: the permanent stabilization of an area by the collapse of underground workings to prevent any future subsidence, and the use of blasting to close existing sinkholes.

One of the requirements in open pit gold mines is to minimise the mixing of ore and waste. Dilution can be reduced by choke blasting and control of the initiating sequencing. The authors have used the DMC computer model (developed at SANDIA) to examine the effects of timing and charge distribution on ore dilution. The model has been calibrated by measurements of vertical uplift derived from high speed videos made at the Dome Super Pit in Timmins.

On August 3, 1977 the 95th Congress passed Public Law 95-87, the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977. This Act created the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSM), which was given the responsibility of formulating regulations to implement the Act. This paper explains the rationale behind the specific provisions of the final blasting regulations, which were published in volume 44, No. 50 of the Federal Register, dated March 13, 1979. The major items covered by the regulations include preblasting surveys, blasting schedules, protection of the public, ground vibration limits, the scaled distance equation, airblast limits, blasting procedures, and record keeping. The regulations are designed to protect the safety and well-being of the public and to protect buildings and structures such as wells, pipelines, and storage facilities from damage.

Delay blasting in underground coal generates shock waves and rifting forces that damage charges remaining in the blast pattern. Damaged charges detonate poorly, raise fume toxicity and reduce coal breakage. Such circumstances could be prevented by using explosives resistant to cross-hole interaction damage. The design of rugged explosives is fraught with contradictory requirements, but tradeoffs related to hard-particle size characteristics prove useful. Hard particles, related voids or trapped bubbles represent reaction nucleation centers which strongly influence the performance of coal mine explosives.

The phenomenon of sympathetic detonations in blastholes is investigated by comparing experimental observations and numerical modelling results. Numerical modelling using the TDL computer code and Forest Fire decomposition rates for commercial explosives has shown the importance of blasthole diameter, impedance of stemming material and host rock. Comparison with experimental observations has also shown that sympathetic detonations cannot always be treated as shock to detonation transitions (SDT). Examination of previous results which have been obtained from calibrated low amplitude shock experiments reveal that there is an ignition threshold prior to the detonation threshold. The difference between the two thresholds is more pronounced in the case of air bubble sensitized products. The ignition threshold can be very important under the confinement provided by the blasthole and the conditions of application. It also correlates well with the pressures expected at the gap distances of interest in the practical application. It is suggested that critical energies are used as the criterion for cross initiation in blastholes. Practical suggestions based on the numerical calculations and experiments based on these calculations are also given and discussed.

This paper presents the results of ground vibration measurements carried out in Hisarcik Boron open pit mine located on the west side of the central Anatolia near Kütahya province in Turkey. Within the scope of this study in order to predict peak particle velocity level for this site, ground vibration components were measured for 304 shots during bench blasting. In blasting operations; ANFO (blasting agent), gelatin dynamite (priming) and delay electric detonators (firing) were used as explosives. Parameters of scaled distance (charge quantity per delay and the distance between the source and the station) were recorded carefully and the ground vibration components were measured for all blast events using 2 different types vibration monitors (1 White Mini-Seis and 1 Instantel Minimate Plus Models). The absolute distances between shot points and monitor stations were determined using GPS. The equation of square root scaled distance extensively used in the literature was taken into consideration for the prediction of peak particle velocity.
