This paper deals with a new variation of the cast blasting technique, where-in the object is to cast the economic deposit out front under the overburden, while avoiding dilution from the floor material. To date, the technique has been successfully applied at two cement quarries in Iowa and at a granite quarry in Minnesota.

Accurate assessment of blasting near an object (organism or structure) requires recording of the damage parameter for low-valued scaled distances. Seismograph recordings of particle velocity are a well established, common procedure for land-based blasting. Similarly, pressure recording of the absolute waveform needs to be a more common procedure for sensitive, underwater resources.

The desensitization of an explosives column by the transmitted effects of the earlier detonations in nearby explosive charges is of vital concern to the explosives and blasting industries. Stress waves from detonations of borehole charges have the capacity to desensitize adjacent delayed borehole charges. This desensitization can be of a transient or a permanent nature.

A portion of a tailings impoundment may need to be removed with the expansion of an open-pit mine in northeastern Nevada. The tailings are saturated and consist of fine silty soil. During the removal of the tailings, they would have no support structure and vibrations induced by blasting in the pit could lead to slope failures.

Blast vibration and airblast overpressure signals are generally rated and compared only by their maximum amplitude and the principal frequency associated with the peak pulse. The scaled distance concept is often used to predict peak amplitudes and can be applied for blasts in the same area of a mine to evaluate the statistical properties of a set of readings.

This paper will discuss the Wight Pit wall slash at the Mount Polley open-pit copper-gold mine that scavenged a high grade block of ore from two double-benches of the pit wall. The Wight Pit orebody, discovered in 2003, is located in the Northeast of the property with the southeast pit wall approximately 50m (165ft) from the edge of Polley Lake. In early 2009, the Wight Pit was nearing completion while an estimated 150,000 tonnes (165,000 tons) of ore averaging a grade of 1.4% copper remained just inside the southeast pit wall. The ore block started 24m (78ft) above the pit floor and extended up another 48m (157ft) with a 70o plane defining the back of the block.

Metallurgical testing at Cobre Las Cruces prior to production at the mill was done with overburden gossan. Some of that test gossan was a very fine material, wet by the water conditions at the bottom of the pit. When processed and stored wet at the fines material 3000 tonne (3307 tons) silo, this material cemented in a very unusual manner.

The demolition of an old power plant boiler house in Parsons, Kansas calls for the use of some linear shaped charges. The steel is thick and the structure is heavy but gravity can be a blaster’s best friend. This entry did not win in a very competitive category. We thought it was worthy of coverage in the Journal of Explosives Engineering.

By recording the arrival time of a pipe wall at evenly spaced intervals in a plane perpendicular to the pipe axis, application of the equations of motion permits calculation of the pressure of the explosive acting to accelerate the pipe wall. "This paper presents an approach used to plan and evaluate drill and blast trials for a mine that currently mechanically excavates in-situ rock. The document presents the approach used to plan the trials, the key performance indicators (KPIs) that were necessary to evaluate the mining methods, the test matrix used during the trials, and the results of the trials. The trials, which occurred as part of an overall drill to mill optimization project at this site, helped to evaluate various blast designs using fragmentation results,drilling and blasting costs, and downstream costs. This project was unique in that (1) drill and blast methods were trialed on multiple rock types and various bench heights using a range of blasthole diameters and powder factors and (2) the load and haul costs were evaluated using a range of loading equipment, from 66 tonne (73 ton) excavators up to 250 tonne (276 ton) excavators. A ten year net cost financial evaluation of the material extraction alternatives was also prepared for the site management. Ultimately, the process of evaluating the drill and blast trials helped the management decide whether to continue extracting using mechanical methods or to introduce drill and blast methods to extract the rock."

A large iron ore open pit mine in Brazil operates with reduced blast sizes, due to the imminence of red alerts in the rainy season and the proximity of plant and dam structures that demand control of the maximum load of fired explosives. Blasts are currently not allowed to remain loaded with explosives due to the risk of red alerts, limiting mine operations close to them. There is a need to increase the blast sizes, reducing the number of events required to obtain the planned mass and, consequently, the unproductive operating hours lost with mine evacuations. The WebGen™ wireless electronic initiation system is a technology for firing detonators via lowfrequency magnetic induction that propagates through the medium, without physical connection. A blast was carried out with 406 holes divided into 4 panels, aiming to validate the preloading technique with wireless detonators and its performance in safety and productivity. The absence of lead wires in the system eliminates the risk of interaction between vehicles and detonator cables in stemming and loading operations, which can result in unplanned detonation or misfire. By eliminating the need for a spotter, it reduces people's exposure to dust and the risk of human-machine interaction. Furthermore, it eliminates the risk of unplanned detonation caused by lightning strikes. The pre-loading technique with wireless detonators enables flexibility and efficiency in planning through temporary accesses over loaded areas. In the demonstration, driving over the loaded area was essential to avoid jams and excessive wear on equipment due to the narrow berm and very friable material. Another gain in productivity was optimizing operational stages, since detonators were programmed in parallel with loading, anticipating process stages, in addition to eliminating the need to connect detonators. Considering the average handling and savings in downtime due to the reduction of blasting events, a potential increase in movement of 49,000t (54,013 short tons) in 3 months was estimated, keeping the vibration results within the required limit. The trial with wireless detonators demonstrated the feasibility of carrying out blasts with preloaded panels, without restrictions on the number of panels or detonators, enabling vibration control, innovating mine planning and increasing safety and productivity

Duvha Opencast is a large South African dragline operation supplying coal to the Duvha Power Station which is operated by Eskom, the state power utility. For Duvha to remain competitive with other collieries, it has proved necessary to continuously examine and investigate methods of reducing costs. With explosives representing a major portion of the total working costs, blasting is an obvious area of investigation.
