The McLaughlin Mine is an open-pit disseminated gold mining operation. Homestake Mining Company's approach to solving some of the blasting problems inherent to this type of deposit provide an interesting case history. Geology, although unique and site specific, is overall similar to other mines within the Western United States over-thrust belt and demonstrates an excellent example of the blasting conditions and requirements common to most of these operations.

Blasting techniques and protective measures exist that can mitigate risks associated with flyrock and the nuisance of vibration, and overpressure. However, these are often misused or not used because there are no prescriptive regulatory requirements and typically urban blasting guidelines do not exist. The relationship between the increasingly negative publicity that the urban blasting industry receives and the existing state of regulatory control on blasting in urban environments is presented.

LKAB operates an underground iron ore mine in Malmberget in the northern part of Sweden. Twelve different orebodies are mined today using both longitudinal and transversal sublevel caving as mining method. The town of Malmberget is located close to the mining area. The need for urban transformation, moving people and houses, is evident for many reasons. The mining methods used have inherent subsidence issues and there are also vibrations from blasting and mine induced seismic events.

The application of those findings to actual field conditions, however, will be limited because they will not include social and psychological factors existent in the real world. United Taconite is an iron ore mine operated by Cleveland-Cliffs Inc (Cliffs) located near Eveleth, Minnesota. The mine, originally known as Eveleth Taconite Mines, was purchased in December 2003 by Cliffs (70%) and Laiwu Steel (30%). The mine site, known as the Thunderbird Mine, produces taconite ore for delivery by rail to the company’s Fairlane plant, located approximately 10 miles to the south near Forbes, Minnesota. At the plant, the crude ore is ground, concentrated and processed into pellets for steel industry customers. Total pellet production capacity is about 5.4 million long tons (Ltons) per year.

The Bureau of Mines obtained blasting accident data from the Mine Safety ant Health Administration (MSHA), U. S. Department of Labor. These data were analyzed to determine the most frequent causes of accidents in mine blasting. Accident totals for 1971 through 1981 are tabulated for metal-nonmetal and coal mines both surface and underground. In the past 11 years (1971-1981, inclusive) there has been an annual average of 9 fatal and 121 nonfatal blasting accident victims. Underground mining averaged 6 fatal and 93 nonfatal injuries each year.

When rock blasting occurs near new concrete of varying age, engineers representing project owners often express concern that vibration from the blasting will crack nearby concrete. Regulations and/or specifications for civil construction projects usually include particle velocity vibration limits intended to protect concrete. In some cases specified limits are unreasonably low and needlessly restrict and increase the cost of excavation work. This paper discusses how methods of predicting resulting flexural strains caused by blast-motion can be used to develop safe and reasonable PPV limits to protect new concrete. Three case histories demonstrating how these evaluation techniques were used to establish higher PPV limits designed to protect concrete of various structural condition are also presented.

Few topics in the blasting industry are more controversial than the proper riming procedure for large-diameter ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-FO) charges, despite the considerable amount of research that has been done both in the laboratory and in the field. The January, April, and June 1975 issues of Emphasis on Blasting contain interesting discussions on priming (5). An ideal primer is one that will surely and efficiently initiate the AN-FO column at the correct location to assure optimum blasting performance. During the 20 years of AN-FO's existence, singlepoint priming, axial priming, multiple-point priming, thermal priming, and shock riming have all been advocated as the "optimum" method. This is not surprising because blasting specialists have often differed on even the most fundamental concepts. To define the optimum primer, we must know what detonation characteristics in the AN-FO column are most desirable. Again, authorities disagree. This paper will discuss conclusions of various studies in an attempt to clear up some of the confusion.

The City of Fort Myers needed to replace a 40-year old 42-inch storm sewer line in downtown Fort Myers with a new 54-inch line to accommodate population growth. The old line had to be kept operational while a new line was installed. the contractor spent two months using a drop ball, a hoe ram, and large rippers trying to break the three to four feet of rock that needed to be removed to accommodate the new pipe. Mechanical trenching was considered but was proven to be overly expensive. On very short notice, Ireco of Florida was asked to design and execute a blasting procedure that would allow this project to proceed. Nearby buildings were over 80 years old, three of them containing antique shops specializing in glass antiquities with attorney offices above them. High water table compounded problems with a 20-year old steel water main and clay drainage pipe 15 feet from the new sewer line. Holes had to be drilled within six inches of the edge of the existing pipe to four feet below the pipe on either side of the pipe and blasted. No interruption in the sewer line flow was to be tolerated.

The Colowyo mine is a unique surface coal mining operation because it is a multiple seam pit. Using a combination of a shovel-truck and dragline operation, Colowyo mines 8 seams of coal to a depth of 400 ft. Over the past 3 years a number of operational changes have occurred, one of which is the implementation of blast casting. Through this implementation Colowyo has been able to eliminate over one million cubic yards a year, which would have had to be removed by the shovel-truck operation. This has also brought about a significant decrease in the stripping cost per ton within the dragline operation.

In the near future, Bong Mining Company (BMC) will start mining a new deposit known as Zaweah II which is a narrow iron orebody requiring multiple row blasts with the bench floor as a free face. This called for the development of a new blasting technique. The article delineates the problem and its restrictions related to blasting. It also describes the approach which was taken for developing this new blasting technique which is essentially an application of the cratering theory with near spherical charges. Basic crater tests were conducted using various combinations of hole sizes, explosive strengths and delay patterns. From the results obtained, several alternatives were considered for production blasts and the most promising ones were evaluated.

he Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) supplies water to some 16 million people in a semi-arid region. Most of this water is imported. Some of the supply lines cross over the San Andreas fault, one of the most notorious and active faults in the U.S. There was a serious need for emergency water in case normal supplies should be interrupted. To fill that need, MWD had to find a reservoir site on the west side of the San Andreas fault, west of the mountains. Because of the distinctive nature of the location, it was necessary to construct a huge “bath tub” by building a dam at each end of a valley, requiring some 115 million cubic yards (88 million cu.m) of fill. In effect, two large-scale surface mining operations have been under way simultaneously. The $2.2 billion project is known as the Eastside Reservoir Project. Because of space limitations, this paper will be limited to those topics which are expected to be of primary interest to explosives engineers, principally related to large-scale rock fill production. There is not sufficient space to discuss the many diverse geotechnical questions related to site selection, geological and geophysical field testing, laboratory testing and design considerations. This brief overview may assist those who might be interested in making a tour of the project site following the ISEE conference.

Trail blasters for the National Park Service (NPS) live and work in remote mountain terrain throughout the western states, where any support or resupply may be sporadic and ditlicult and mountain weather affects every activity. Mechanical “aids” are the pick, shovel, rock-bar, wheelbarrow, and a Pionjar or Cobra dritl. The blaster is usually faced with an extraordinary range of work, t?om delay blasts in weathered rock using driiole depths of 18” (46cm) to as little as 4” (1 Ocm), through reducing boulders and talus fields to useable tread, blasting stumps, snags and log-jams, to the explosive disintegration and casting of animal czcasses. One day he/she might provide a 500cf (14 cu meter) anchor excavation for a suspension bridge, the next day directionally fall 60” (1.5m) diameter snags in a camp area, and the following day blast a 3-foot-wide (1 meter) tread bench across a steep bedrock slope. To be effective, the blaster must design each and every blast around desired end result, crew and public safety, maximizing effective use of limited quantities of explosive, and the minimnation of environmental effects. Since almost all drillhole blasting occurs in the weathered zone of the rock, blasting is more the art than the science of judging rock density, hardness, cohesion and prefracturing, and selecting explosives, drill and delay patterns, and loading techniques responsive to those conditions. For these reasons the NPS issues its own Blaster’s License, with a basic requirement of at least 40 hours of NPS blaster training and 3 years of supervised Blaster in-Training experience. The focus of this pre-license requirement is on safety and using explosives as a precision tool, versus just “blowing things up”.

The rock mass to be excavated is classified using data obtained from the initial site investigation, and the design of excavation and support is then made based on the rock class. Rock classification provides an empirical design with guidelines for tunnel support compatible with rock mass quality and the method of excavation. Although most clients provide standard patterns corresponding to each rock class, the patterns of drilling and blasting have only been used in estimating the excavation cost and not used in the construction stage. The purpose of the study presented in this paper is to establish a standard blast pattern to yield optimum blasting performance along with an attempt to reduce a difference between design and construction. A series of test blasts were carried out at two tunneling sites of Central Inland Highway crossing the country. Long hole blasting was tested in rock mass whose RMR value is over 60. The blasting results were evaluated by measuring degree of fragmentation, advance rate, muckpile distribution, overbreak, etc. Based on the results of test blast, several patterns were proposed for a twolane highway tunnel.

Because in Europe and in many other countries as well every new project (quarry, mine, public work) needs a risk estimation to prove its feasibility, a model to estimate flyrock risks became necessary. This paper presents the basic hypothesis which should underlay such a model to estimate statistical flyrocks range for not only some single blasts but a whole project and in particular the way to take into account rockmass or blast pattern parameters variability. It describes a first usable quantitative flyrock model based on the characteristics of the blasting plan and of the generic laws utilised in casting and selective blasting operations and on a statistical approach of rockmass. In a second step, this paper discuss an approach of risks estimation compared to the classical one used in pyrotechnics studies for explosive magazine risks assessment.

A knowledge of the size distribution of particles can be used in applications from evaluating the stability of a waste dump, to optimizing a blast design to achieve a required fragmentation, to on-line control of a crushing and sieving operation.
