The use of large diameter blastholes for underground mining began approximately twelve years ago and are now routinely employed in a variety of ore types and stope designs. These large boreholes, ranging in size from 4 1/2 inch to 8 inch diameter, were first utilized in the same fashion as in open pit bench drilling. However, a variety of changes quickly followed in order to accommodate the unique conditions encountered while using a blasthole sloping method.

This research was performed on the quarry that will be opened to produce aggregates and rock filling material at Catalagzi region at Zonguldak providence. Excavations will be done by drilling and blasting. However, there are some structures which can be adversely affected by blasting at the quarry. These structures are a methane exploration drill hole and a house at the distances of 340 m and 390 m, respectively. The one of the main goals of this study is to perform a preliminary assessment of possible damage effect of ground vibrations induced by blasting on these structures by risk analysis based on ground vibration measurements.

This paper relates some of the experiences, good and bad, of blasting adjacent to residences of the primary author during his 15+ years of field blasting in the Northern Great Plains region. During this highly-rewarding blasting career, the author has become aware of two major issues in residential blasting: 1) What we call “Risk/Reward Ratio.”Some questions that must be asked by the blaster prior to taking on any blasting job include: - Can we eliminate or minimize the risk? - Is the reward worth the risk? - Do I have a measure of “nervous confidence” about the shot? 2) Public Relations. Two key elements to public relations are: - Notification - Education All the education in the world to the adjacent populous of what’s happening, of blasting in general, or of what to expect from the blasting does little good without notification. Good public relations is a key to controlling the cost of liability in a litigious society.

The high temperature and high pressure of an explosive detonation can be used for the production of nanomaterials. The controlled detonation of explosive compositions along with the collection and characterization of reaction products encompasses a process known as detonation synthesis. The primary advantage of the method of detonation synthesis is the possibility for producing monocrystalline nanoparticles with diameters of less than 10 nm. In order to successfully synthesize nanomaterials via the detonation process, it is necessary that the explosive detonation is conducted in a sealed environment. This environment when pulled to a vacuum or purged with inert gas such as argon will reduce the oxidation of detonation reaction products. Detonation synthesis testing is currently being conducted in a 1.8 cubic meters (m3) (64.3 cubic feet (ft3)) ellipsoidal pressure vessel consisting of two interlocking half shells. The testing involves the controlled detonation of cast mixtures of Cyclotrimethylene-trinitramine (RDX) and 2,4,6-Trinitrotoluene (TNT) in conjunction with siliceous compounds to produce nanocrystalline diamond and silicon carbide. Alternative detonation environments including the presence of a cooling medium such as water or dry ice to absorb residual, post detonation, thermal energy and enhance the stability of the materials being produced have improved yield. Modifications to the explosive charge composition have an effect on the type and quantity of materials that can be produced. Doping of explosive charges with various organic and inorganic compounds has shown promise in the synthesis of materials that are difficult or uneconomical to produce through other methods. This paper outlines the process development of detonation synthesis facilities. Preparation of the pressure vessel to create a suitable detonation environment for the production of nanomaterials is examined. Formulation of explosive charge compositions and considerations involving test charge initiation are discussed in detail. Experimental results and analysis from initial testing as well as plans for future research are also evaluated.

In this paper, the authors describe major changes in drilling and blasting methods instituted at the Zortman And Landusky Mining Company Properties to maintain the viability of these north central Montana surface mines in the present period of depressed precious metal prices. The authors explain how improved drilling procedures minimized problems due to uneven benches and floors. They also describe changes in explosives loading and delay blasting techniques which improved fragmentation, thus increasing metal recovery from heap leaching. Quantities were increased substantially and a new bulk explosives loading system was placed in service with a special down-the-hole bulk loading truck and storage facilities for bulk ANFO and bulk emulsion. At the same time, drill patterns were expanded by nearly 40%. The authors also describe a new technique of using explosives to selectively cast waste and ore in different directions so as to reduce the cost of separating the ore.

Extensive blasting was required to construct an underground tunnel for a 90 inch sewerage relief line. The tunnel and required excavation extended under an upper middle-class residential area in Atlanta, Georgia for more than a mile and a half and required the use of more than a half million pounds of explosives in the immediate vicinity of houses and residential apartments valued at more than 16 million dollars. Other houses and property valued at more than 80 million dollars were within range to claim blasting damages. An effective blasting damage control program was carried out which limited the number of blasting damage claims to less than 2-1/2% of the total number of potential claims. All but three of the small number of blasting damage claims which were made were effectively denied without any resulting legal actions and less than $3,800 was paid for settlement of the three claims.

The paper presents the vibration and sound emission measurement campaigns carried out in 2007 in preparation for the Ceneri-Basistunnel construction. We also present the vibration measurement campaign conducted during the construction of the Zimmerberg-Basistunnel. Both tunnels form an integral part of the Swiss Federal Railway Company Neue Eisenbahn Alpentransversale project (NEAT). This strategic project comprised the construction of several new tunnels. Its aim is the improvement of the existing infrastructure. The improved infrastructure will be able to accommodate a larger volume of railway traffic that is also crossing the Alps at higher speeds. The construction of the Ceneri-Basistunnel commenced in 2006. Both the Zimmerberg-Basistunnel and the Ceneri- Basistunnel are located underneath densely populated areas. Therefore, noise and vibration emissions have to be kept to a minimum and must not exceed applicable codes of practice. In order to identify the most appropriate blasting strategy for the yet to be constructed Ceneri-Basistunnel, blasting trials were conducted. The paper presents the findings of these trials and identifies ways to reduce both noise and vibration emissions from blasting. The construction of the first phase of the Zimmerberg-Basistunnel took place between 1999 and 2003. While the first phase is already in operation, the construction of the second phase has been postponed (commencement originally due in 2007). The Zimmerberg-Basistunnel connects the outskirts of Zürich with the city centre. As the tunnel site was not located close to the surface near populated grounds, no special measures were needed to reduce the noise emissions from blasting. However during the construction of the tunnel, the vibration emissions from blasting were monitored on more than 50 locations on the surface. The paper presents the analysis of some of the data. An emphasis is placed on the appropriate synopsis and presentation of data for documentation purposes.

The U. S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research on blasting methods that reduce highwall overbreak and the associated rockfall hazards. This paper presents the results of tests using a low-density water gel to improve the quality of air-decked presplit blasts at a surface coal mine in New Mexico. The explosive's specific gravity averaged 0.50 and was bulk loaded using a modified truck which injected the gassing agent. Reductions in overbreak and resulting rockfall were achieved in comparison to a highwall presplit with ANFO. The test sections used 15° angled blast holes and resulted in 1,119 m (3,672 ft) of air deck presplit highwall using a low-density water gel which was then compared to 894 m (2,934 ft) of highwall shot with an ANFO air decked presplit design. The total quantity of explosives per hole ranged from 68 to 113 kg (150 to 250 lbs) and the 27 cm (10-5/8in) holes were 19- to 33-m (62- to 108-ft) deep on 5.5 m (18-ft) centers. Periodic visual examination and photographic surveys of the highwall test areas were used to document the amount of rockfall. In addition, laser profiles of selected sections were conducted to further delineate the damage and highwall contour differences.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a series of delayed blasting experiments at a West Virginia contour coal mine which resulted in smoother highwalls. The highwalls were smoother due to reduced overbreak and inherently safer due to reduced likelihood of rockfall. Reduced overbreak was accomplished by an increase in the highwall hole delay intervals which changed the effective delay pattern geometry and the direction of burden movement. Three combinations of blast delay intervals in the highwall holes were tested: 1) 50 ms longer than the nominal design, 2) 50- and 100-ms longer delays in the nearest two rows that form the highwall, and 3) 100 ms longer than the nominal design. The mine's nominal blast design was a flat vee formed by 17-ms surface delays between holes and 42-ms surface delays between rows, with 200-ms in-the-hole delays. All three test designs produced highwall improvements over the nominal design with only occasional exceptions because of geologic variations.

Rock particle sizes were measured at fourteen steep-slope Appalachian coal mines during production blasting. The distribution of rock sizes shows the effects of inter-hole timing, sequence of hole initiation, as well as charge distribution within each shot. Blast design parameters were selected to: (1) minimize displacement of broken rock conforming to throw control required of mining methods, (2) minimize seismic effects, and (3) create breakage at a cost economical to mining operations.

Accident data obtained from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) were analyzed by the Bureau of Mines to determine the most frequent causes of blasting accidents in U.S. mining and to examine trends in blasting accidents. This accident analysis is an update of a similar blasting accident study conducted by the Bureau and published in 1983. The analysis shows that there has been a recent reduction in mine blasting accidents: The annual average number of nonfatal injuries has decreased from 107 for 1978-81 to 46 for 1982-85. The annual average number of fatal injuries was reduced from 11.3 to 5.0 during that time.

We have assured them that there is not a problem but they require proof of this.

The purpose of the project was two fold: 1. To determine whether Pyrodex, a propellant, manufactured by the Hodgdon Powder Company, could be used as a substitute for high explosives for presplitting in granite and other materials. 2. To determine if Pyrodex, a slow reacting propellant which produces no stress waves in rock because it reacts subsonically, could cause the rock to crack similar to the results achieved with high explosives.
