A grade separation was required to allow uninterrupted traffic crossing for a busy rail spur and a county road. The grade separation was achieved by creating a 30-foot (9-meter) high embankment that incorporates two multiplate tunnels and allows the passage of a rail spur and an existing county road. The site is located in an abandoned meander channel in the floodplain of the Mississippi River, near Osceola, Arkansas, and is underlain by more than 40 feet (12 meters) of soft clay and interlayered clays, sands and silts. Without soil improvement, the post-construction settlement would exceed 3 feet, slowly crushing the proposed tunnel structure and cutting off the railroad. Preloading, combined with vertical drains, was used to accelerate the consolidation of the underlying soil layers and to reduce the post-construction settlement under working loads. Six settlement plates were installed to monitor the progress of consolidation under surcharge load. The Asaoka observational method and the hyperbolic fitting method were used to analyze the measured settlement data to predict the end of primary settlement. The in-situ consolidation coefficient, ch, was back calculated from the measured settlement data. The stress release caused by the removal of the preloading surcharge load and the tunnel installation was determined using a Plaxis 3-D finite element model. The measured and predicted settlement using Hansbo's analytical solution demonstrated reasonable agreement. Early removal of the surcharge and construction of the tunnel prior to reaching the end of primary settlement was accomplished by analyzing the post-excavation stress reduction achieved via tunnel construction.

"A new embassy for the Peoples Republic of China is under construction in Washington, DC. The 475,000 square feet (44,125 m2) structure has five levels below ground and four above, making it the largest embassy in Washington DC. A vertical soil nail wall was used as the primary support of excavation system for the project. The soil nail wall was irregularly shaped, benched in areas, and up to 98 feet (29.9 m) in height. The soil nail and shotcrete system consisted of approximately 1,600 soil nails and 50,000 square feet (4,645 m2) of exposed shotcrete wall surface. Design and construction challenges included soft soil conditions, inside wall corners, underground utilities, seismic impacts from blasting, and logistical and political factors. Overall, wall movements were lower than expected, with maximum horizontal movement less than 0.25% of the total height of the excavation.INTRODUCTIONThe proposed Embassy of the Peoples Republic of China in Washington, DC, will consist of about 475,000 ft2 (44,125 m2) of building space and contain up to four fl oor levels above ground and fi ve levels of basement (Figure 1). When completed, the building will be the largest embassy in Washington, DC. The architect for the project, Pei Partnership Architects, along with the world-renowned architect I.M. Pei, made effi cient use of the site by inserting the building into the existing slope. Consequently, excavations reach heights up to 98 feet (29.9 m) on the southern side of the property and 42 feet (12.8 m) on the northern side.The soil nail and shotcrete system consisted of approximately 1,600 soil nails and 50,000 square feet (4,645 m2) of exposed shotcrete wall surface. The location of the building relative to the property line called for tight excavation requirements, including precise wall positions and shotcrete tolerances. Design and construction challenges included soft soil conditions, inside wall corners, arched walls, underground utilities, seismic impacts from blasting, and logistical and political factors.SITE INVESTIGATIONInformation obtained from the geotechnical investigation revealed about 10 to 20 feet (3.1 to 6.1 m) of a loose to medium dense fi ll material placed during previous site activities. The fi ll material was underlain by a silty sand and sandy silt residual soil derived from the natural weathering of the underlying bedrock. This soil sequenced naturally from a medium dense to very dense material through natural weathering of the underlying bedrock. This soil sequenced naturally from a medium dense to very dense material through natural weathering processes in the rock. The underlying bedrock was locally characterized as a gneiss. A water table elevation about 17 feet (5.2 m) above the fi nal excavation level was revealed, except in the “radius” area, where a leaking water main/hydrant generated a high local water table."

The support of excavation (SOE) for the Capitol Crossing project in Washington, DC consisted of a combination of soldier piles, lagging, tiebacks, braces, underpinning, single auger soil mixed (SASM) walls, micropiles, and a tiedback slurry wall. Over 130,000 square feet of SOE was installed with more than 1,300 tiebacks providing lateral support for excavation depths of up to 72 feet. Several structures including the Holy Rosary Church, the Bell Tower, the Casa Italiana, and a modern office building were supported by a combination of conventional hand dug underpinning pits, bracket piles, and stiff SASM walls. This paper will focus on the design and performance of the SOE adjacent to the Holy Rosary Church and the Bell Tower. Construction of a new ship dock at a major Philadelphia area refinery required geotechnical design and field consultation. The new dock, which consists of a system of mooring dolphins and platforms, will be capable of docking the Stena V-MAX Oil Tanker (V-MAX). The 1100 ft long V-MAX is currently the largest tanker to travel the Delaware River and will induce significant lateral loads on the new ship dock. Lateral loads induced on the dock will be resisted by over 200 pipe piles installed on a batter. The piles used for support of the dock included 20 and 30 in. diameter reinforced, concrete filled pipe piles. Complete construction of each pile included driving of the pile to the design ultimate capacity, flushing the pipe pile casing clean of overburden materials followed by drilling rock sockets into the underlying Wissahickon Formation. Variations in depth to bedrock, rock quality and degree of weathering and presence of very hard quartzite lenses created a complex geologic environment that presented challenges for the pile/rock socket design and installation. The design of the pile system, installation methods, QA/QC and testing (Pile Dynamic Analysis), as well as the challenges that were encountered through the duration of the project are presented and discussed.

As available space in urban centers becomes more scarce, builders and developers are increasingly turning to vacant, existing structures to meet cities' growing needs. The developers of City Ridge Roadside Development and North America Sekisui House (NASH) - - found a suitable site for their "urban village" at the former Fannie Mae headquarters complex on Wisconsin Ave. NW in Washington, D.C., which had been vacated in early 2018. The urban village will consist of eight new structures centered around the building that currently sits on the site. All told, the project will include 687 residential units, a 150-room hotel, over 150,000 sq ft (13,935 sq m) of retail space, and 62,000 sq ft (5,760 sq m) of office space. A below-grade parking structure will extend across most of the footprint. The Fannie Mae building, which was designed in the Colonial Revival style to mimic the Governor's Palace in Williamsburg, Virginia, was named a historical landmark following a request from the development team. The central portion of its existing masonry structure was built in 1956 on pile caps with small-diameter cast-in-place piles. Two wings, which were added in 1962, were built on belled caissons. There are three levels above grade and one below.

"The West Toronto Diamond project, under construction since 2006 and due to be complete in 2015, is a rail-to-rail grade separation project in the heart of urban Toronto. Once complete, a depressed corridor over 1000 metres long will take the CN tracks beneath the CPR tracks. An interlocking steel pile wall serves to retain ground and cut off groundwater. Remedial measures, constructed using jet grouting, were required at several locations within and behind the steel piles.At mechanical interlock joints damaged or suspected of being damaged, jet grouting was used to improve native soils on the retained side of the wall to reduce permeability of the soil mass in intimate contact with the joints to 10-7 cm/s. At a number of steel piles where groundwater and soil type combined to cause basal instability inside the pipes during the interim between excavation and concreting, jet grouting was used to construct temporary bottom seals. At locations near adjacent structures where the steel pile installation process resulted in disturbed ground on the retained side of the wall, jet grouting was used to strengthen and stabilize ground.This paper outlines the details of the various jet grouting applications, the respective testing programs implemented to demonstrate in situ permeability and strength of the soil-grout matrix, and performance of the constructed system.INTRODUCTIONThe West Toronto Diamond (WTD) is a junction of several railway lines, all intersecting at the same grade (Figure 1). A major grade separation project at this site commenced in 2006 and is scheduled to be completed in 2015. The whole of the work is comprised of multiple contracts, completed and/or ongoing, by different constructors. Once completed, a depressed corridor over 1000 metres long with over 23,500 m2 (face area) of retained earth will bring the CN tracks beneath the CPR tracks and eliminate a major bottleneck at the most heavily used rail crossing in Canada."

On any given day, a simple check of the news will turn up stories related to sustainability, resiliency, climate, or human or natural disaster. In recent years, the winter power grid failure in Texas, the Surfside Condo collapse, unsafe drinking water in Flint, Michi- gan, the Oroville Dam spillway failure, wildfires and flooding (to name a few) have appeared in the U.S. news cycle. As a result, young people are aware of the problems and challenges facing the nation and the world and want to be part of creating sustainable solutions for society. Many choose to major in civil engineering because of a desire to make a difference, address climate change, and develop sustainable and resilient infrastructure for the future. Sustainability is at the core of modern civil engineering practice. In its Policy Statement 418, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) explains sustainability is a set of conditions where human society can indefinitely keep and enhance quality of life without deteriorating economic, environmental and social resources. Sustainability is an integral part of the technical outcomes identified in the ASCE Body of Knowledge and features prominently in the ethical responsi- bilities of engineers based on the latest version of the ASCE Code of Ethics. Thus, to prepare graduates for successful and ethical engineering practice, civil engineering programs must provide instruction in how to account for social, environmental and economic con- straints in design. Since the deep foundations industry is integral to the broader civil engineering and construc- tion fields and is responsible for supporting critical infrastructure on which human society depends, sustainability should be a key con- sideration in foundations projects. Given the importance of sustainability within civil, geotechnical and foundation engineering, it is worthwhile for the deep foundations industry to consider where and how engineers are trained in sustainability topics through higher education at the undergraduate and graduate level, and what is driving sustainability content in civil and geotechnical engineering curricula.

"PROJECT DESCRIPTIONThe R C Harris Filtration Plant underwent an expansion to install an underground sludge treatment capability consisting of a series of underground tanks within stepped excavations 12m (39 ft) and 10m (33 ft) deep into compact, wet sands over stiff clays and clayey silts.Concerns regarding the original structure influenced designers to set the lateral deflection limit for the proximal front footing at 4mm (1/6 in), (0.03% excavation depth). The design-build team indicated at the time of tender that the movement criteria was unattainable using the tender design. Through extensive Fast Lagrangian Analysis on Continua (FLAC) and a novel construction geometry the design-build team crafted an alternative that produced significant savings over the original concept and met deflection concerns.GEOTECHNIQUEThe hillside site drops 14.5m (47.6 ft) over a distance of 53m (174 ft) between the existing Filter Building on the north and the Services Building on the south. The soils adjacent to the Filter Building consist of 6m (20 ft) of sandy fills, to the footing elevation, over compact sands and layered dense sands and silts to a depth of 10m (33 ft) below existing footing. Beneath the silts lies a 10m (33 ft) thick stiff clayey silt, 2m (6.6 ft) of sandy silt till (containing cobbles and boulders) and an artesian gravelly sand at a total depth of 30m (98.5 ft).The tender information was deemed inadequate to accurately determine soil parameters for a finite element analysis. As a result, the design-build team performed pre-tender Cone Penetrometer Testing (CPT), including dynamic analysis. The CPT data indicated stratigraphy consistent with the conventional bore hole exploration (SPT results) however, the CPT data provided consistently superior soil strengths. The CPT data indicated the sands and silts were dense to very dense throughout their full thickness. The clayey silts below the sands were found to have shear strengths in the 100 to 200 kPa (14.5 to 29 psi) range with an Over-Consolidation Ratio (OCR) ratio of 1.5 to 2. The dynamic analysis, while low strain, indicated very competent behavior with Young’s Modulus values in the 200 to 350 MPa (29,000 psi to 51,000 psi) range. The CPT derived shear moduli and OCR values were vital in determining the soil engineering parameters used for the FLAC analyses."

Along the southeast United States coast, clayey silt and silty clay marine formations may cause pile installation and integrity problems. More specifically, excess pore pressures which develop in these soils during driving can cause high displacement piles to rebound or ?bounce?. Bounce is defined as a large (¾-in. to more than 1-in.) downward pile displacement during the hammer blow with little to no net displacement at the end of the blow. Pile bounce can generate damaging tension stresses and result in inefficient pile installation. A case history is presented where pile bounce was observed during the installation of 20-in. square ?high displacement? prestressed concrete piles which support a new ferry terminal in coastal North Carolina. High-strain dynamic pile testing was performed during test pile installation to evaluate driving stresses, pile capacities, and hammer performance. During and after installation of numerous production piles, circumferential cracking was observed on some of the piles. Additional high-strain dynamic pile testing was performed on two piles installed with a hammer having a heavier ram than the initial hammer. The new driving system generated lower tension stresses and installed the 20-in. piles more efficiently. Low-strain integrity testing was performed on the piles to qualitatively assess the cracks and locate any unidentified cracks. The low-strain testing was performed on piles installed at least a week prior to testing and on piles installed immediately prior to testing. When low-strain testing was performed immediately after pile installation before dissipation of excess pore pressures, pile integrity could be evaluated to depths of at least 12 pile diameters deeper than when performed weeks after installation.

Located on rolling bluffs on the Zumbro River's south fork in Southeast Minnesota, Rochester is the state's third largest city and is the home and birthplace of the renowned Mayo Clinic, a nonprofit academic medical center focused on integrated health care, education and research. Mayo Clinic employs more than 4,500 physicians and scientists with another 58,000 administrative and allied health staff across three major campuses: Rochester, Minnesota; Jacksonville, Florida; and Phoenix/Scottsdale, Arizona. Originally developed as a stagecoach stop, Rochester has become a national destination for medical care, drawing more than two million visitors annually to Mayo's Minnesota location. Since January 2022, Veit & Company has been working on the construction of the Mayo 1st Ave Tunnel, which comprises three tunnels (pedestrian, utility and services), and the RMC Loading Dock projects in Rochester. These adjacent projects are on the Mayo Clinic's ever-expanding campus and represent its continued dedication to improvement and advancement as a leading medical service provider in the industry.

A 670 linear meter (2,200 linear foot) large-diameter sanitary sewer interceptor installation at depths ranging from 3 to 10 m (10 to 30 ft) below existing grade in an area with a high water table requires careful attention to design and performance of the system during construction. Highly variable soil and rock conditions at the site necessitated the design and construction of various excavation support systems along the alignment. In addition to the subsurface condition challenges faced at this site, the proposed sewer pipe was to be installed between an existing active combined sewer main and a high pressure gas main feeding the nearby city. What better way is there to monitor performance of the system than to require a detailed instrumentation system? Instrumentation system specifications and designs are becoming more commonplace in the industry, but it is always important to sit back and take a look at the whole picture. What are you looking to gain from your monitoring? What pieces of information are useful? What interpretations can you derive from the instrumentation you have selected? This paper will address the instrumentation system used to monitor the 670 m (2,200 ft) excavation from the specification requirements to the implementation and interpretation. This case history will delve into the challenges faced and methods used to overcome those challenges on this particular support of excavation (SOE) project. A combination of soldier pile, lagging and sheeting, and shoring systems was used to achieve the necessary excavation support. In designing the systems, attention was given to the configuration of the bracing system to allow the sections of largediameter pipe to feasibly be installed in the excavation while maintaining the SOE system.

The Bruce Museum is an art, science and natural history museum in Green- wich, Connecticut. The museum was originally built as a private residence in 1853, and has undergone several reno- vations, the most recent dating to 1992. The current renovation is part of a $60 million capital expansion plan for the "New Bruce." The renovation includes a 43,000 sf (4,000 m2), three-story addition that will more than double the size of the museum, adding space for new ex- hibitions, education and community spaces. The proposed bottom of the foundations for the renovation sit up to 16 ft (5 m) below the Bruce Museum's existing shallow foundations.

The Port of Palm Beach is a full-service landlord port in Riviera Beach, Florida. The port and its tenants process more than $14 billion in commodities. About 80% of these are exports, which makes the Port of Palm Beach one of only 16 "Export Ports" in the U.S. More than 2.5 million tons of cargo move through the port every year. Ozinga, a fourth-generation family- owned construction materials company, has supplied ready-mix concrete for commercial, residential, public works, landscaping and excavation projects from several of its Florida locations. It planned to build a one-of-a-kind cement storage facility to receive and store international ship- ments of cement for transport to other facilities for the production of ready- mix concrete. Dome Technology, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, designed and constructed the 125 ft (38 m) diameter storage facility. The design and working volume of cement for the facility was just under 27,000 cu ft (765 m3). The design loads required to be supported by the foundation system are shown in this table:

The EFFC/DFI Carbon Calculator provides the deep foundations industry the opportunity to be a leader when it comes to carbon reduction. This tool was created 10 years ago in an extensive effort by the European Federation of Foundation Contractors (EFFC), DFI, member organizations and Carbone 4, a consultant with ex- perience in life cycle assessment. The tool was born out of the fact that governments and clients were asking for embodied carbon information for foundation systems, and that in- dividual companies were building their own calculators to meet these requests. To help all member organ- izations achieve compliance, and to have a sector-specific tool that is certified to the prevailing standards, EFFC and DFI agreed to partner to create the carbon calculator, which is: Excel based and, therefore, easy to learn and use Updated on a regular schedule Certified to ISO 14067, GHG Protocol and PAS 2050 Free and available for anyone to use Even though this tool is free and easy to use, most projects in the industry do not have a carbon calculation performed. The case to use the calculator is more obvious for members in places like Europe where there are stricter reporting standards and government work can be driven by sustainability over cost. In North America this is not the case, yet. Without directives from clients and governments, what can compel the industry to start regularly using this tool and care about the carbon emissions of projects during design and construction?

"The cement deep mixing (CDM) method has a wide range of applications, both on land and at sea. This paper describes the features of the equipment on CDM vessels engaged in maritime construction in Japan: the DCM No. 3 barge, the DCM No. 6 barge, and the DCM No. 8 barge. The DCM No. 3 barge is a large vessel with a mixing area of 5.7 m2. The design of the elevator of the deep mixing unit on the DCM No.3 barge enables us to conduct deep underground/ sea operations. This enables us to conduct mixing at depths of up to 52.6 m below the seabed and up to 70.5 m from the water surface. Additionally, since the tower is installed on the center of the barge, it has excellent stability. The DCM No. 6 barge and DCM No. 8 barge are mid-sized vessels with a mixing area of 4.6 m2. The DCM No. 6 barge was fitted in 2013 with energy conservation equipment and upgraded to an environment-friendly CDM barge. The energy saving upgrade used electric power, instead of hydraulic power, by inverter controlled alternating current motor for both mixing unit and main hoisting winch. This enables the using on effective use of regenerative power when the deep mixing unit is lowered. A feature of the DCM No. 8 barge is that it has an inclinable tower located at the bow section for elevating the deep cement mixing unit. Since the tower can be greatly inclined, the hull has a lower center of gravity and greater stability when the vessel turns. This also allows the vessel to pass below bridges and simplifies cruise preparations, outfitting and dismantling work.INTRODUCTIONThe cement deep mixing method (CDM method) involves mixing and stirring a cement-based solidifier into soft ground to rapidly bring the ground to the desired firmness. This method is used to suppress ground shear deformation, increase strength, increase slip resistance, and mitigate liquefaction and subsidence. It has been recently used in Japan in the construction of revetments at controlled waste disposal sites, both to boost the strength of the seabed and to prevent the seepage of waste matter and other pollutants. Undertaking CDM construction work at sea requires specially constructed marine construction CDM vessels. Since CDM construction at sea entails many more restrictions on working conditions than construction on land, the vessels themselves sometimes need to be modified. This paper will describe 1) the remodeling of the turrets and mixing machinery for mixing to great depths in deep water (DCM No. 3 barge with eight axes); 2) the upgraded of equipment on board CDM vessels after accounting for environmental considerations (DCM No. 6 barge with four axes); and 3) the use of a inclinable tower (DCM No. 8 barge with four axes)."

A pump station was constructed at the food of a steep mountain, very close to a riverside. To protect the pump station from being washed out, and to guarantee the stability of the steep hillside behind the pump station and the safety of the foundation pit when the station was built, cast-in-place R.C. diaphragm walls (Fig. 1) were clesigned in front of and on both sides of the pump station. This wall was 130m long, 0.8m wide and 29m deep. The diaphragm walling on both sides of the pump station served to prevent landslides and to fix anchor piles. The 55m long diaphragm walling in front of the pump station served as a temporary shuttering which kept earth and prevented water from permeating when the pump station was under construction. After the pump station project was finished, static blasting method was used to blow up the wall body which was 10m beneath the ground so that the water from the river could come into the pump station. The remaining wall body below this level was kept to prevent soil from being washed out. [ ]

The thirty year old wharf structures at the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey?s Port Elizabeth Marine Terminal are being modernized for the next generation of Post-Panamax container ships, which require deeper water and larger container cranes. The terminal operator is upgrading the wharf in order to remain competitive, now and into the future. The upgrade coincides with the Army Corps of Engineers? $733 million project to deepen the main shipping channel in New York Harbor. This paper focuses on the structural modifications to accommodate berth deepening and to support the heavier loads of the new cranes. An overview is provided of the design and actual construction, including typical problems encountered when combining new and existing structures. The wharf improvements included: ? Installation of a steel king pile/sheet pile cutoff wall along the face of the wharf to permit increasing the depth from ?12.2 m + 0.61 m to ?15.2 m + 0.61 m ( ?40 ft + 2 ft to ?50 ft + 2 ft) ? Removal of the existing crane rail support beams and installation of new piles and beams to support the increased crane loads ? Replacement of the existing timber fender system with a new system capable of resisting the berthing energy of a 152,000 MT displacement vessel, and having dedicated sections for berthing barges ? Replacing the existing overhead, landside crane electric feeder system with a waterside, cable reel trench system. The work included upgrading the transformer capacity at the terminal for increased crane power demands This paper provides a case history for port administrators, terminal operators, engineers, and shipping lines challenged with upgrading aging terminals.

"INTRODUCTIONNo. 1 Queens Rd was an existing 10-storey office building founded on large pad footings. This project involved the construction of a 6-level, 15m (50-ft.) deep basement excavated immediately adjacent to the existing building and also beneath the existing footprint of the Southern end of the building. The total perimeter of the new basement was to be approximately 200m (656 ft.) all with a retained height of 15m (50 ft.). It was also proposed to add a further 5 storeys to the building. Approximately 18 of the existing columns supporting the 10-storey building were to have the applied column load diverted from the existing foundations at ground level onto the new piles or basement raft 15m (50 ft.) below.The geotechnical profile consisted of fill for the top 1.5m predominately comprising of clayey sand with a high gravel content from 1.5m to 9m (5 to 30 ft.), a medium dense to dense clayey sand and then below was a sandy clay extending to 15m (50 ft.) ranging from stiff to very stiff. From 15m on completely to extremely weathered siltstone was encountered. The groundwater was measured at 9.5m (31 ft.) below the natural ground surface.DESIGN BRIEFThe existing building columns were founded on large pad foundations up to 4.4m (14.5 ft.) square, founded on the dense clayey sand. These pads would require temporary support to enable the excavation to proceed beneath them. Upon completion of the excavation under the pads new columns were to be constructed joining into the existing columns to transfer the load onto the new raft slab, 15m (50 ft.) below. The existing 10 floors were to be refurbished. It was planned to undertake all the temporary support and transferring of loads while the structure above was only able to provide a dead load. It was decided that any movement of the building would have minimum impact on a skeleton structure. During the temporary support of the columns, movements due to construction activities had to be monitored to understand any potential stresses in the structure above.The original design required beams to be installed under the pads and supported at either end by temporary piles that were to be founded below the level of the proposed excavation. (Refer to sketch 1). Wagstaff Piling considered that this methodology had difficulties in construction at all stages and did not provide facility for transfer of the load without significant movement of the structure above. Wagstaff Piling revised the design to attach beams to the columns above the pads using shear collars. (Refer to sketch 2). These beams supported on the temporary piles could then be jacked upwards to remove loads off the pads. This would enable removal of the pads with minimal movement of the 10-storey building above. When finished (projected completion in 2016) the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge Project will comprise three cable-stayed span bridges and a 4.15 mile immersed tube tunnel - linking Hong Kong to Macau and the mainland Chinese city of Zhuhai. The design included two artificial Islands to serve as the transition structures for the tunnel to bridges, entailing a massive seaborne land reclamation project, and the use of thousands of sheet piles, and man-hours. The challenges of driving individual steel sheet in 100? of water are well known, let alone in the open waters of the South China Sea. In 2010 a joint effort between American Piledriving Equipment (APE) and Allnamics Pile Testing Experts convinced the Chinese contractor First Harbor Marine Group China that a massive multi-vibro hammer can be used to drive 130? long, 72? diameter steel pipe piles weighing 662 US tons each into the sea bed of the South China Sea for the Hong Kong - Zhuhai - Macau bridge artificial islands. Combining APE?s hammer design, production and operation know-how with the pile driving simulation and installation know-how of Allnamics made it possible to show the feasibility of driving these gigantic piles into bottom of the sea to the required depth.
