The past 50 years have been a golden era, not just for the CMP but also for the development and success of Canadian technologies in the field of mineral processing. The CMP has played a critical role of technology transfer agent, and the success of these technologies is also linked to the success of the CMP itself. The presentation will cover, in brief, the growth of the CMP from its origins as the Canadian Gold Metallurgists in 1964, with some 39 attendees, to the present day when the annual meeting sees 500 and more from a dozen countries. Also covered will be selected technology success stories from the 50th anniversary volume to be given to all delegates ‘Canadian Contributions to Mineral Processing Technology 1968-2018’. The volume itself highlights some 40 technologies that have been divided into five categories; process water treatment and minesite environment, technology innovations, innovations in operations, technology providers and university contributions. Some international perspectives will also be shared.

zThe operation of SAG mills is variable over time due to their continually changing liner shape, mass and subsequent load motion. However, this tends to be poorly accommodated in liner design and mill control, with only limited compensation made for this influence, usually in the first few weeks after a new liner is installed. With ever-increasing ore competency, increasing energy costs and decreasing ore grades, simplified design and operational approaches that compromise the achievable mill efficiency are no longer adequate. This paper presents a methodology that has been developed to measure and account for the changes in mill performance as the liner wears. This involves monitoring all liner profiles – in other words the three-dimensional liner shape - over the life of the liner, then conducting controlled surveys at different stages of the liner wear life, and correlating the mill performance to the liner profiles. The measured liner mass is modelled to provide an ongoing meaningful load mass measure that excludes the liner mass.

"Adopted in 2003, theses guidelines are intended to assist the Qualified Person(s) in the planning, supervision, preparation and reporting of mineral resources and mineral reserve estimates. The report is divided into two broad sections “General Guidelines” appropriate for most metals and “Guidelines Specific to Particular Commodities” for potash, industrial minerals, uranium and coal. “These guidelines are reference in the Companion Policy of NI 43-101 with a statement that a qualified person classifying a mineral deposit as a mineral resource or mineral reserve should follow them.”Executive SummaryThe following is a summary, in table format, of the main elements of the Estimation Best Practice Committee's report ""Estimation of Mineral Resource and Mineral Reserve Best Practice Guidelines"". While the summary table is provided for convenience, the Committee recommends that the report be read in its entirety and the table summary not be used as a stand alone document. These guidelines are not intended to be either prescriptive or exhaustive. They do not preclude innovation. Preamble: These guidelines have been prepared by the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) led Estimation Best Practices Committee. They are intended to assist the Qualified Person(s) (QP) in the planning, supervision, preparation and reporting of Mineral Resource and Mineral Reserve (MRMR) estimates. All MRMR estimation work from which public reporting will ensue must be designed and carried out under the direction of a QP in accordance with National Instrument 43-101 (NI 43-101) and related forms. A QP is defined in NI 43-101 as ""an individual who is an engineer or geoscientist with at least five (5) years of experience in mineral exploration, mine development, mine operation, project assessment or any combination of these; has experience relevant to the subject matter of the mineral project and technical report; and is a member in good standing of a professional association"". Disclosure of MRMR estimates is to be made in accordance with industry standard definitions approved by the CIM (the CIM Standards adopted by the CIM Council in August 2002) which have been incorporated by reference into NI 43-101."

Economic viability of base metal mining is complicated by a volatile market that can cause fluctuations in the growth and stability of the mining industry. Nickel is mined primarily for use in manufacturing industrial stainless steel and plating materials. It is essential that nickel production be sufficient to respond to current and future market demand. A Post-Pillar cut and fill mining complex is currently producing nickel sulfide in Northern Manitoba. From 2006 this area has shown a steady increase in the annual production, rising from 11 million pounds to 25 million pounds in 2010, and accounting for 33% of the total production for the Manitoba Operations. It is expected that fine-tuning the mining process can safely enhance ore recovery, improve production consistency, and increase economic viability of the deposit. The Post-Pillar Optimization study was initiated by the local technical and operational departments at the mine and analyzed from July 2010 to March 2011. The purpose of this study was to determine if portions of non-recoverable pillars can be slashed without jeopardizing pillar strength. This ideal case would optimize ore recovery and reduce variability in the ore mining rate. Numerical modeling and geo-mechanical material properties analyses, completed by the rock mechanics group, define the maximum drift width at 32 feet and the minimum pillar width at 18 feet. Thus, it was suggested that up to 3 feet could be slashed from two sides of the standard 24 foot pillars without damaging ground integrity. The field data collected indicates that additional ore could be recovered without compromising the safety of the workplace and the integrity of the complex. Consequently, technical and operational groups work jointly to achieve pillar optimization. Approximately 500,000 pounds of nickel was extracted from the complex via pillar optimization from July 2010 to March 2011. Economic analyses show the pillar optimization method developed for the mining complex is a proven, value-added opportunity. The mining complex remains a safe workplace and has retained ground integrity.

In metallurgical copper production, the traditional aim is to increase recovery of copper to the maximum. SMS Siemag (SMS) has supplied numerous furnaces for this application. New targets are to make sure end of line products are as safe as possible with respect to health and environment, and to maximize raw material utilization. This means a for example a minimization of leachable metals in slag, so it can be safely used as a construction material, and either a targeted concentration or fixation of volatile compounds, such as arsenic. Currently, 2 process routes are generally applied for slag cleaning. The first is grinding followed by flotation, and the second is slag cleaning in an (electrical) furnace. Popularity of both options has fluctuated over the years, and currently the milling-flotation seems to be the more popular option. In this article some of the advantages and disadvantages of both methods are described, and especially how long term environmental policies could have an impact on the decision which process route to choose. Finally, this article will describe some of the developments SMS is working on in pyrometallurgical slag cleaning that could influence the direction for the design of the copper plant of the future.

"The Cerro Verde copper-molybdenum porphyry mine, majority owned and operated by Freeport- McMoRan Copper & Gold, is located 30 km southwest of Arequipa Peru. The concentrator, which produces copper and molybdenum concentrates, started operating in late 2006 with a 108,000 tpd design capacity, processing primary sulfide ore (mainly chalcopyrite and molybdenite). Plant capacity was recently increased to 120,000 tpd. The comminution circuit consists of one 60” x 113"" primary crusher, four MP-1000 secondary crushers in closed circuit with dry screens, four 2.4m x 1.6m High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGRs) in closed circuit with wet screens, and four 7.3m x 11m gearless ball mills in closed circuit with cyclones. The HPGR circuit is fed by the Secondary Crushing circuit product at a T80 of 35 millimeters, and the HPGR circuit product feeds the Ball Mill circuit at a T80 of 3000 microns.This paper describes operating experiences with HPGRs during these first four years highlighting improvements in operating practices and presentation of data regarding operational efficiencies, also discussed are the primary benefits provided by HPGRs such as production of micro fractured particles, reduced ore Bond Work Index, and reduced power consumption. Cerro Verde represents the first installation of HPGRs in both the copper industry and large scale hard rock mining."

Introduction During the past few years emphasis has been placed on the importance of major faults, fault zones, and associated structures in localizing ore deposition. This interest has developed partly through experience in mining camps in other parts of the world, and partly by the discovery of such structures associated with ore deposits in the Abitibi region, northwestern Quebec. The recognition of these structures has been brought about chiefly by detailed mapping that has been gradually extended along most of the southern gold belt of Quebec and across adjacent parts of Ontario. In the Chibougamau region of northern Abitibi, progress has been made in the mapping of major faults by using aeroplane photographs with a scale of about 1,000 feet to one inch for field mapping. These studies have shown that many large faults occur in the Abitibi region; also that there is a relationship, direct or indirect, between faults and mineral deposition. The faults are, however, of more than one type and age, and this should be clearly appreciated in any planned programme for prospecting this great region adequately. The information regarding faults and structure is so widely scattered that it is difficult to obtain a clear picture of the essential features, either for planned prospecting or for analysis and development of ideas for further study. This paper, as originally conceived, was intended only to discuss and compare the regional structure of southern Abitibi county-where detail mapping and diamond drilling have been carried on intensively for the past ten years-and of the less well-known Chibougamau district, in order that the experience gained in the one area could be usefully applied in the other. However, a comparison of the two districts leads naturally to a consideration of their common relationship to certain major late-Precambrian structures that form an important northeast system across the southeastern part of the Canadian Shield.

This poster presents results obtained from an experimental test set-up called CUAPS (curing under applied pressure system) allowing to assess the performance and quality of cemented paste backfill (CPB) materials. CUAPS can be used for carrying out a series of tests: one-dimensional consolidation, saturated hydraulic conductivity, pore-water pressure dissipation, and curing under uniaxial stress. The poster presents CUAPS testing preliminary results including uniaxial compression tests (UCS) and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP). It was demonstrated that CUAPS-consolidated CPB materials cured under time-dependent stresses provide higher UCS values than standard mould (undrained and unconsolidated) CPB samples. This may be explained by the release of excess pore water within backfill that gives rise to a significant reduction in the total porosity of fresh CPB materials prior to hardening and thus, to higher mechanical strength (UCS) gain. The results obtained from MIP highlighted a good correlation between CUAPSconsolidated and mould-unconsolidated CPB samples. MIP results were also related to UCS values in order to predict the final CPB mechanical strength.

"P.T Freeport Indonesia's new SAG mill commenced operation in February 1995. The reclaim system consists of four apron feeders and a series of three conveyors. The feeders are used in various combinations and relative speeds to blend SAG mill feed. It was recognized during design of the control system that effective automatic control would require dead-time and gain compensation. The successful implementation of the Dahlin algorithm to provide variable dead-time and gain compensation is described and compared to Pl control.RésumeL'opération du nouveau SAG de P.T. The use of Bauxsol? (physically and chemically modified alumina refinery residues) to treat acid rock drainage (ARD), and sulphidic waste rock and tailings, provides new options for managing some intractable environmental problems at both derelict and active mine sites. Treatment of ARD waters using the Bauxsol technology shows that the effectiveness of raw Bauxsol material can be enhanced by including modest amounts of selected industrial minerals or common chemical additives. The type and amount of additive required and the amount of the blend needed to treat the water depends on the initial composition of the water and the target water quality; for some ARD waters, optimum treatment may require one or more changes in the type or amount of additive used. Maximum treatment efficiency can be achieved only when a balance is maintained between the rate of trace metal binding and the rate of change in water pH; adding treatment reagents faster than can be accommodated by the reaction kinetics will not result in more rapid water treatment. This paper presents the results for treating several ARD waters to illustrate the importance of blend selection and treatment procedure. Although treating ARD water is often necessary, this strategy treats the symptoms rather than the cause. The best permanent solution is to treat the sulphidic waste rock or tailings such that they do not continue to oxidise and produce acidic metal-rich leachates; sulphide oxidation needs to be stopped or slowed to a rate that can be accommodated by normal environmental processes. Capping lined impoundments is not a solution because all caps and linings will inevitably fail some time in the future creating a nasty surprise for some future generation. Adding lime is also less than ideal because the lime leaches from the treated material; treatment often appears to be effective for a few years and then fails. Bauxsol technology offers effective alternatives to conventional liming and capping procedures and Bauxsol blend application rates and procedures can be planned to ensure that no acidic or metal-rich water can ever escape from the site. Bauxsol can be physically mixed with the sulphidic mine wastes or it can used to form subsurface permeable reactive barriers, or both. Bauxsol treated waste rock and tailings can be immediately and effectively revegetated. In this paper we present leachate quality and plant growth rate data for several sulphidic waste rock and tailings deposits treated using the new technology.

In 2008, Anglo installed the Modular IntelliMine® System at its Kleinkopje Mine (AKK). As part of this deployment, Anglo also used the Change Management Consulting Service offered by Modular to ensure a successful installation. This paper outlines the benefits that AKK has realized through the deployment of the system, including a 15% improvement in tonne/kilometers per hour (TKPH). The mine benefited from the improvements provided by the system almost immediately by utilizing change management to more effectively integrate IntelliMine technology into their processes. This case study includes details about the deployed system, the implementation of change management, and recommendations to ensure success in future projects.

As the building has recently become bigger, higher, and freeform, a technology called BIM(Building Information Modeling), which is a key technology that integrates construction and IT(Information Technology), has been rapidly introduced and expanded. Because BIM technology offers various benefits, countries that introduced BIM early has been actively promoted. However, misperceptions of BIM are prevalent in countries such as South Korea that have adopted it relatively late, with lack of awareness of its fundamental purposes. Under these circumstances, transparent and quantitative performance assessment needs to be executed in order to eliminate the misperceptions, and to explain and revitalize the BIM introduction. These quantitative performance measure KPI (Key Performance Indicators) to be measured should be prioritized. As derive performance indicators in terms of the four types (financial, customer, internal processes, learning and growth), and performance management systems, Uses the BSC to seek a balance between short-term financial goals, values and the value of long-term goals. Uses the BSC(Balanced Scorecards) to derive performance indicators in terms of the four types (financial, customer, internal processes, learning and growth), and performance management systems, seeking a balance between the value of short-term financial objectives and the value of long-term objectives. Through this, the KPI (Key Performance Indicators) which is used for measuring the effect of the BIM will be generated and also the method that can determine whether the generated KPI figures are objectively inter-connected will be suggested as well.

"INTRODUCTION A pilot heap leach project was conducted on the B. P. Selco Hope Brook ore located in southwestern Newfoundland. The pilot heap leach was undertaken to assess and confirm the following:1) To confirm that heap leach technology now currently used in the United States could be applicable to Canadian sites.2) To confirm gold recovery by the Heap Leach technology3) To assess and study potential heap leach environmental concerns in cold and wet climate.PROJECT LOCATIONThe Hope Brook Project is located near the southern coast of the island of Newfoundland, approximately 100 kilometers southeast from Stephenville, approximately 25 kilometers west of Burgeo, Newfoundland. Access to the property is limited to helicopter, float plane or by sea through Couteau Bay. The property was covered with muskeg and very few trees. Surface relief was moderate with many poorly drained boggy sections confined to small areas. Many small unnamed lakes were located on the property which provided water to small brooks and streams flowing to Couteau Bay.Several locations were reviewed for the installation of the pilot heap leach facility. Important parameters used to select a suitable location included sufficient land area, close proximity to but not on the ore body, reasonable protection from wind, sufficient supply of fresh water, close to a suitable location for a portable crushing plant, reasonable access to aggregate material for preparation of the test pad and ponds and suitable contours to minimize site preparation."

"Concentrate drying at the Sullivan Concentrator goes back to 1937 when the original coal-fired dryer was put into operation. This was a second hand 8' dia. x 56' long Struthers-Wells rotary dryer that came from the phosphate plant in Warfield, B.C.In 1962, replacement of the old dryer was seriously considered. The shell and the auxiliary drive mechanism were badly worn and needed replacing. In April 1963, the new 8' dia. x 65' long fuel oil-fired Struthers-Wells dryer went in operation at an installed cost of $174,000.In 1965, it was apparent that a major rebuilding of the dust collecting system would have to be done. A study was carried out and a Ducon Dynamic Gas Scrubber was installed. The system went in operation in November 1966 and has fully met expectations.In the same year, the zinc dryer was converted from fuel oil to natural gas. Linear mine-waste dumps at open-pit mine sites essentially represent expedient places to deposit large quantities of waste rock. Being in valleys in most cases, the effect of the water flowing through and out of the deposit often raises questions about their hydraulic behaviour and geotechnical stability, especially the zone of the downstream toe. In order to provide better tools to assess the behaviour of these dumps a laboratory and analytical study was conducted. Firstly, physical models were built to assess the flow capacity and hydraulics associated with the linear growth of such dumps. It was found that the elevation of the point of first-emergence on the downstream side becomes constant after the dump grows to a certain length, but that the upstream depth concurrently increases. The limits of applicability of the theories of Hansen et al. (1995, 2005) are discussed in this regard. Secondly, in analysing the seepageface downstream, two approaches for solving this spatially varied flow (SVF) problem were undertaken. Under one of the approaches links to SVF depths were merely made to the hydraulic heads of the body (interior) and flux was calculated using conventional surficial nodes after the fact, Under the other approach flux nodes were used to link the SVF algorithm to the hydraulic heads further ?inside? the body of the rockfill. Although there are inherent uncertainties, it was found that these two methods can be made to perform equally well. Research continues but it appears that a linear variation in depth can be assumed without inducing any unrealistic exit gradients in the zone of primary concern with respect to unravelling.

The Uranium Province of Lagoa Real is located in the mid-south region of Bahia State, Brazil. Uranium is the only mineral wealth, occurring mainly in the form of uraninite. The region has been searched for uranium since 1971 and 35 anomalies were detected, distributed over 1200 km2. Seven are now taken as deposits, accounting for reasonably assured resources of 100.000 tons of U3O8. This paper describes the geological aspects of the area, the exploration and mining activities done so far by the state company INB and the perspectives for the near future, when a raise in the country?s uranium demand is expected.

"With the continuous depletion of high-grade tungsten ores, the low-grade refractory wolframite has become an important source for the tungsten industry. However, the large-scale utilization of low-grade refractory wolframite is disappointedly scarce, it is due to leanness of valuable minerals, complex mineral characterization and use of toxic collectors.The aim of this study was to develop an environment-friendly processing flowsheet, which was used for beneficiation of low-grade tungsten ore containing 0.45% WO3 from New Brunswick in Canada, and the content of arsenic is 0.68% in this materials. The objective of beneficiation studied was to obtain a concentration containing 60% WO3 with less than 0.5% of arsenic under the condition without any flotation reagents. In this environment-friendly processing flowsheet, magnetic separation technology, classification and gravity separation technology were combined and employed. Firstly, magnetic separation was employed for the first pre-concentration process, over 95% of the feed was rejected as the final tailings, meanwhile, over 85% of arsenic minerals were removed with tailings. Secondly, gravity separation tests were employed on the classified magnetic pre-concentrate in the second pre-concentration process, a second pre-concentrate with WO3 grade of 54.32% and As grade of 5.41% was obtained. Finally, two stage magnetic cleaning were conducted on the second pre-concentrate for upgrading the second pre-concentrate, the mostly arsenic and gangues were removed from the second pre-concentrate. Finally, this novel processing achieved an effective recovery of fine wolframite from low grade tungsten ore with high arsenic. A concentrate with WO3 grade of 64.81% were obtained in new opened processing flowsheet, and As grade was less than of 0.5% in this concentrate. Furthermore, remarkable feature of this processing flowsheet is environment-friendly due to avoid using the toxic flotation reagents during the whole mineral processing.INTRODUCTIONTungsten is an essential metal and is the most widely used in industrial production such as national defense, electro-mechanical products, textile and leather sectors (Srivastava et al., 2000). Wolframite and scheelite are the main mineral sources of tungsten metal. With the continuous depletion of high-grade tungsten ores and the increasing demand for tungsten alloy, the low-grade refractory wolframite has become an important source for the tungsten industry.
