"TOF-SIMS (Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry) was used to detect collectors sorbed onto the surface of mineral particles in concentrate and tailings samples from the Brunswick, Matagami and Kidd Creek concentrators. This technique uses ion beams from either Cs or Ga sources to sputter the particle surface, a method which reduces fractionation of the collector molecule during sampling.In the Brunswick Zn circuit, sphalerite particles lost to the scavenger tails had less amyl xanthate and isobutyl xanthate compared to sphalerite recovered to the Zn final concentrate. Xanthates were detected on the surface of sphalerite particles floating to the CuPb final concentrate.At Matagami, significantly more isopropyl xanthate and isobutyl dithiophosphate were detected on sphalerite recovered to the Zn final concentrate, compared to sphalerite lost in the Zn rougher tails.In the Zn circuit of Kidd Creek, sphalerite lost to the tails had on average ten times less xanthate compared to sphalerite recovered into the Zn final concentrate. Xanthate was also detected on the floated pyrite particles. In addition to isobutyl xanthate, amyl xanthate was also detected on the floated sphalerite and pyrite particles.This preliminary investigation has (a) demonstrated the ability of TOF-SIMS to detect individual collectors on particle surfaces from plant samples and (b) shown that TOF- SIMS is an excellent tool, complimentary to TOF-LIMS, in establishing the surface chemistry of minerals as related to mineral processing."

Laronde Mine has been working for a number of years to identify substances that could contribute to process water toxicity and to find an effective way of removing these contaminants from the water. Initial studies have identified ammonia, nitrite, cyanide, thiocyanate, cyanate, dissolved organic carbon, copper and zinc as potential toxicants. Bench-scale tests were carried out with Lakefield Research to find a water treatment process that could effectively remove the suspected toxicants. Nine treatment processes were evaluated: 1) granular activated carbon (GAC) filtration followed by zeolite, 2) zeolite filtration followed by GAC filtration, 3) aeration followed by GAC filtration, 4) multi-stage GAC filtration, 5) chlorination followed by dechlorination, 6) addition of clay based polymer, 7) treatment with peroxide and ultra-violet light, 8) bulk addition of GAC and zeolite powder, 9) treatment with bacteria. This article presents a summary of the test results and of the problems associated with the evaluation of technologies for the treatment of toxicity.

"This paper reviews tailings management at Highland Valley Copper, and outlines main features of its tailings storage facility enclosed between the H-H and L-L dams. Key management focusses are: energy efficiency, cost effectiveness, safety and integrity of the tailings impoundment, environmental protection, and reclamation after decommissioning. Main features of the tailings facility include: high international standards for seismic and flood design criteria, water management and water quality monitoring, operations and construction optimization, reclamation and decommissioning plan, and geotechnical challenges associated with the complex geology of the L-L tailings dam foundation.IntroductionHighland Valley Copper stores its tailings mainly in the Highland Valley tailings facility (ultimate capacity: 1.8 billion tonnes). Smaller tailings storage facilities were operated by predecessor companies: the Number One Pond, the Trojan Pond at Bethlehem and the Highmont Pond at the Highmont operation as well as backfilling the Heustis and Jersey lona Pits at Bethlehem. These areas are currently not in use, and are in the reclamation phase prior to decommissioning. This paper focusses on tailings management in the main facility. As indicated in Figure I, the facility includes three tailings dams: these are, going from east to west, the H-H, J-J and L-L Dam, named after the alignment alternatives in the initial feasibility studies. From 1970 to 1977 Canadian Bechtel Ltd. advised Highland Valley Copper's predecessor company Lornex, on tailings storage at the H-H and J-J Dams and on the L-L Dam. Since the completion of the L-L Starter Dam in 1977, Klohn Leonoff Ltd. has provided ongoing consultation and construction monitoring of the raising of the L-L and the H-H Dams. The J-J Dams is currently buried by deposited tailings. This paper reviews key tailings management focusses and main features of the tailings facility."

"Limestone is one of the most important mineral resources, and in Japan it is only one mineral which can be fully supplied by the domestic product. Generally limestone mines in Japan located at mountainous regions, and the combination between bench-cut method and the carry-out system using vertical shaft is widely used in the domestic mines. During mining operations, the occurrence of the blockage in the vertical shafts is very serious problem. Once the blockage in the shafts is occurred, a lot of works and dangerous procedures are necessary to solve the problems. It is thought that blockage is influenced by the cohesion and friction coefficient due to clay minerals thrown into the vertical shafts, however, the quantitative and precise reason is not revealed yet.In this study, the process of blockage occurrence was simulated by 2-Dimensional Discrete Element Method (DEM). In the 2D-DEM analysis, discontinuous circular particles are generated, and the individual movement of each particle is calculated by forward difference method. In the analysis, several typical ore distributions are applied, and the DEM analysis was conducted under the various combinations of cohesion and friction coefficient. From analytical results, it was found that the friction coefficient strongly influences to the occurrence of blockage and there were a threshold values which blockage does not occur. Several kinds of shaft shape were also simulated towards different ore size distributions, and those influences to the blockage occurrence were also discussed."

Abstract - The Sar Cheshmeh area covers an area of 640 km2, and is located in the southern part of the Iranian Volcanic-Sedimentary Belt. ETM+ images have been used for alteration mapping. The Crosta method was found useful for enhancing exposed areas containing hydroxyl and iron oxide minerals. However, field checking has shown that this method is not able to identify all the known areas of hydrothermal alteration. Many of these altered areas are also not clearly resolved in the geophysical data. In order to improve resolution of such areas, integration of remote sensing and geophysical data may be helpful. The Darrehzar Cu deposit was chosen as a control area. The data have been divided into two sets: explanatory and target variables. The explanatory data are Landsat hydroxyl and iron oxide images and airborne geophysical data (K, U, and Th total counts, and total magnetics). The target variables are rock geochemistry and ground geophysics. Data analysis and integration of geophysical and remote sensing data were performed using directed principal components. This technique is found to be useful for the delineation of hydrothermally altered areas with more confidence.

"Interest in the use of particle-based ore sorting has increased significantly with recent advances in sorting technologies and higher capacities per unit. Particle-based ore sorting has the potential to provide great value in processing lower grade ores from mines while delivering higher grades to the mill, as well as in upgrading waste rock into ore. Typically the focus is on the amenability of the ore to ore sorting and associated reductions in energy, water, and consumables utilization. However, layout significantly affects the installed cost of a processing plant, and the impacts on layout from fitting an ore sorting circuit into the plant plan need to be carefully considered. This paper examines processing plant layout considerations that play an important role in ore sorting projects, including additional crushing and screening requirements, transport of rejected material back to the waste stockpile (mine fleet requirements), and effects on the processing plant footprint. ¦ KEYWORDS Cold climates, Ore sorting, Plant layout RÉSUMÉ L’intérêt porté à l’utilisation du tri granulométrique du minerai a considérablement augmenté au vu des récents progrès réalisés en matière de technologies de triage et des capacités supérieures par unité. In this research, providing the sustainability of production quality was aimed for a quarry which is located in Istanbul western part of Turkey and producing concrete aggregates with different types of rock. First, research field was divided in 3 different areas in accordance with the geological differences and parameters that control their product quality, limit values of standards and effect levels were determined. Concrete aggregate conformity tests which are stated in international standards were applied on samples which were taken from these 3 different areas and physical, geometric and chemical properties of each rock type were revealed. The properties of the 3 different types of rock which were produced in the quary were determined and the binary blends were composed. Blending studies were conducted with linear programming technique. In the linear programming model, the cost of aggregate production was aimed to be minimal. The limit values that meet literature and national standards for usability of aggregates in concrete were defined as constraints in the linear programming model and evaluated with objective functions, thus the most suitable aggregate blends were composed. In conclusion, to provide the sustainability of product quality, the most appropriate product blends were composed for the research field and the usability of this model for those quarries were revealed.

"In South Africa most of the large gold mines operate between 1500m and 4500m below surface where reef is accessed initially through a vertical shaft system then via a network of tunnels and mined in either a longwall, sequential grid or scattered mining configuration. Due to the complexity of the ventilation networks used to ventilate these mines and the potential disastrous consequences associated with underground fires, it is of utmost importance that these mines are managed in such a way that underground fires are prevented. However, if they do occur the fires are managed to firstly prevent the loss of life and secondly protect the infrastructure and viability of the mine. The aim of this paper will be to: • Discuss current SA mining legislation regarding underground fire prevention and control. • Examine these fires from a risk management perspective by means of a bowtie assessment. • List and discuss the major Threats and Consequences as determined by the bowtie assessment. • Discuss the various prevention and consequence controls for deep level underground fires. • Examine how to effectively run an emergency control room. From this, a practical way of designing, implementing and managing an underground fire management system is explored. Lastly, the paper identifies new technology and ways of thinking and how these can be used to combat underground fires. INTRODUCTION The orebodies of South African gold mines are generally narrow tabular structures that vary in thickness between 0.8m and 1.2m with an inclination of between 200 and 700. This, coupled with depths of between 1500m and 4500m, as well as the unpredictable geology, creates unique challenges and significantly impacts on mine designs and mining methods. In general, gold bearing reefs are accessed initially through a vertical shaft system then via a network of tunnels and mined in either a longwall, sequential grid or scattered mining configuration (Figure 1). Mining is very labour intensive with very limited mechanisation opportunities and this increases the risk to human life if an underground fire occurs. On 16 September 1986, one of the worst mining disasters in SA mining history took place when 177 mineworkers were killed at Kinross Mine. An acetylene tank sparked flames that swept through the mining tunnel igniting plastic covering on the wiring and the flames also set fire to polyurethane foam. The burning plastic combined with polyurethane and the toxic fumes that filled the shafts caused the miners death. This incident was a stark reminder of the serious consequence that underground fires can have on human life as well as the crippling financial and asset impact for the mining companies. Over the past thirty years, the SA mining industry reduced the number of mine fires significantly by replacing normal timber support with fire retardant treated timber, alternative support systems such as backfill and elongate support and many other fire prevention initiatives. Although the number of fire incidents and number of fatalities due to fires does not show a direct correlation because of various factors, the controls put in place against fires has had an impact on the number of fire and explosion fatalities (Figure 2)."

Brannerite is commonly referred to as a refractory uranium mineral as it is usually highly resistant to acid leaching. There is however widely varying literature data on brannerite leaching, with some studies reporting that brannerite leaching can be achieved under relatively mild conditions. The differences observed for brannerite leaching are most likely due to the high degree of variation in the composition and structure observed in natural brannerites. These aspects of brannerite chemistry however are not very well understood due to a lack of fundamental research. The aims of this study were to investigate and develop methods for synthesising brannerites of varying composition and to investigate the effects of composition on brannerite leaching in acidic conditions.

Gibraltar Mine is an open pit copper-molybdenum mine in central British Columbia. The stability and potential failure modes of pit walls in the Granite Pit are controlled by the orientations of joints and faults. The structural geology also has an impact on as-mined bench geometries. Geotechnical mapping and surveying were conducted using stereo photographs and photogrammetry software. Detailed digital terrain models were constructed to determine the pit wall geometry and the locations and orientations of larger structural features. The pit wall geometry is compared to conventional survey results and the mapped structures are compared to results from a nearby geotechnical borehole.

Increasing quality of aluminium alloys and continuous optimization of the production process leads to an improvement of the gas purging systems. The application of porous plugs for the treatment of liquid aluminum is nowadays not widely used in the aluminium industry especially in Europe. The Department of Nonferrous Metallurgy and the Christian Doppler Laboratory of Secondary Metallurgy of Nonferrous Metals intensified the research and development of refining and alloying processes by gas treatment during the last years. CFD-modeling supports these experiments, which should lead to lower hydrogen content, lower suspended particles and a better distribution of alloying elements in the melt. Different parameters such as temperature, bubble size, gas amount and which kind of gas is used influence the quality of the products.

"The Geology of the Cochenour Willans mine, Red Lake district, was described by J. P. Nowlan in the Jubilee Volume. The complexity and intense alteration of the rocks obscured any clear relationship between ore and structure, and Nowlan recognized that future work might greatly modify the ideas then existing. This has proved to be the case. Subsequent detailed work has established the stratigraphic sequence in the Keewatin formations which are the host rocks of the orebodies, and has shown that the principal orebodies are confined to two adjoining bands of tuff.On this basis, it is now possible to map the complex structures with greatly increased accuracy. The amount of drilling and underground exploration required to find new ore has been much reduced, and indicated ore reserves are now substantially greater than at any time in the past. The CCR refinery, which was built in 1931, treats both internal and third party copper anodes to produce 325,000 mt of copper as cathodes. These anodes contain high levels of impurities, such as Ni, As, Sb and Bi, that reports to the electrolyte during the refining step and need to be removed in order to maintain cathode quality and operating efficiencies. In the purification plant, the electrolyte is de-copperized via electrowinning in three stages. In the last stage, the copper content of the electrolyte is reduced to below 1 gpl in order to maximize the co-deposition of As, Sb and Bi with the Cu. This is accomplished with minimum arsine gas generation by using periodic reversal of the current and by controlling the final copper content of the electrolyte. Nevertheless, the possibility of exposure to arsine is treated as a major risk and controls have been implemented to reduce this risk. This paper describes the controls in place at the purification plant, which are being continuously improved through periodic risk assessments and audits. INTRODUCTION The CCR Refinery, which is a part of Glencore Canada Corporation and located in Montreal-East, Quebec, is a custom copper and precious metal refinery, with a capacity to refine 325,000 tonnes of copper anodes per year. Copper anodes are received from the Horne smelter in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, Altonorte smelter in Chile and other 3rd party smelters. CCR anodes are produced using the spent anodes from the tankhouse along with purchased spent anodes and copper scrap. The precious metal plant treats the tankhouse anode slime, purchased anode slime, precious metal ingots and Doré anodes from Glencore’s Brunswick lead smelter in Belledune, New Brunswick. CCR products include copper cathodes, silver and gold bullion, a platinum-palladium concentrate, selenium, tellurium dioxide and nickel sulfate. In 1975 an accident occurred at CCR where two employees were exposed to fatal levels of arsine emitted from the then existing purification cells. This process was therefore shut down immediately. Research and development work was then initiated to determine the optimum electrowinning conditions whereby arsine gas generation would be minimized while maintaining high copper and impurity removal efficiencies. It was found that the application of periodic reversal of current (PRC) during the last stage of electrowinning retarded the onset of arsine formation while at the same time allowing the copper concentration to be reduced to less than 1 gpl (Houlachi & Claessens, 1978). A new purification plant was designed based on the PRC technology and was started up in 1976. In addition to the use of PRC electrowinning, the new plant is located in a fully enclosed section of the tankhouse. A special effort was made to design a ventilation system to evacuate the acid mist in addition to any arsine gas. Arsine monitors were installed to measure the emissions from the stack along with arsine levels in the workroom. The arsine monitors and the ventilation system were interlocked with the rectifiers (Thiriar et al., 1983).

The St. Lawrence Valley of Quebec lies in an earthquake danger zone, the main centers of which appear to be Murray Bay, Montreal and Quebec City. This paper compares conditions in this "earthquake zone" with those of other, currently more active, earthquake zones of the Earth, deals briefly with the mechanics of earth movements and outlines the means by which earthquakes are re-corded. An account is then given of the earthquakes which have occurred in the Province of Quebec -from that of 1534-35 to the earthquake of 1925. A 50-year frequency cycle is implied. The general conclusion is that the 11robability of future earthquakes should be given more consideration in the construction of buildings in the St. Lawrence Valley region.

"Superhydrophobic thin films were fabricated on aluminum alloy substrates by chemical etching followed by passivation with organic acid molecules; (ii) electrophoretic deposition (EPD) of functionalized ZnO nanoparticles and (iii) electrodeposition of organic-inorganic composite materials. The physical and compositional analyses of the deposited thin films were characterized by SEM, FTIR, XRD as well as contact angle goniometer. The contact angle and surface roughness of the superhydrophobic surfaces prepared by the chemical etching process were found to be 156° and 2.29 µm, (ii) by the EPD process were found to be 155° and 4.54 µm and (iii) by the electrodeposition process were found to be 159° and 7.11 µm, respectively.The corrosion properties were analyzed with both polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in NaCl aqueous solutions. The results demonstrate that the superhydrophobic thin films on aluminum alloy substrates display better anti-corrosion behavior than the as-received aluminum substrate. The comparison of results pertaining to the compositional and corrosion properties of these thin films on aluminum will be discussed in this work.INTRODUCTIONSuperhydrophobicity is defined as a surface property which provides non-wetting characteristics with a water contact angle larger than 150°. It is observed that the creation of certain micro-nanoroughness structures promotes the entrapment of air in the spaces of the rough surface morphology. In addition, lowering the surface energy helps to reduce the affinity of water drops to the surface, thereby weakening the water-surface interaction. Recently, various fabrication methods for superhydrophobic surfaces have been explored (Sarkar, 2010, Huang, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2015a, 2015b), such as the sol-gel process (Brassard, 2011), plasma treatment (Marchand, 2013), chemical vapor deposition (Zheng, 2009), chemical etching (Saleema, 2011), electrodeposition (Ying, 2011) and electrophoretic deposition (EPD; Huang et al., 2015b)."

"The interaction between a deformable bubble and a rigid particle in viscous liquids under microgravity conditions is studied by direct numerical simulation via an Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) method. Due to the microgravity, the bubble will stay as a sphere in the fluid without external forces and its deformation is caused by the moving particle. In this study we assume the flow field is axisymmetric and the motion of the gas inside the bubble is neglected. The particle equations and the Navier-Stokes equations for the fluid are solved in a unified finite element framework. The particle obtains an impact velocity by an external force and the impact velocity is varied over a wide range. A ‘critical time scale’ T0 was identified for the interaction process. For successful contacts between particle and bubble, the time scale of their relative motion must be less than T0.INTRODUCTIONThe particle-bubble interaction is an important process in many applied industrial domains such as water treatment, froth flotation and liquid steel purification. It is a complex three phase process in that it embraces many research areas: fluid hydrodynamics, interfacial forces, particle and bubble behaviour and solution chemistry.Derjaguin and Dukhin(1961) clarified the particle-bubble interaction by introducing three-zone model for small and medium size particles. When the particle is far away from the bubble surface, the hydrodynamic forces are dominant. The particle is driven toward the bubble surface by the particle inertial and gravity. This region is regarded as Zone 1 and the interaction in this zone is a collision subprocess. As the particle gets close to the bubble, it exits a zone where the liquid flow around the bubble surface creates a tangential stream from the upper surface of the bubble toward the rear of the bubble. This is Zone 2 which is called the diffusiophoretic zone. In Zone 3, the particle is very closed to the bubble, surface forces like van der Waals, electrostatic and structural forces are considered. Contrast to Zone 1, Zone3 can be regarded as an attachment subprocess."
