The volcanic-dominated Tetagouche Group in northern New Brunswick contains numerous massive-sulfide deposits and intimately associated metalliferous sediments. The massive sulfides are generally hosted by Llanvirnian-Llandeilian volcaniclastic sedimentary rocks of the Nepisiguit Falls, Patrick Brook, and Boucher Brook formations. These formations are intercalated or closely associated with rhyolitic-dacitic flows and/or domes, and minor continental tholeiites of the Flat Landing Brook Formation. Pyroclastic rocks are relatively scarce in the silicic volcanic complex. Tuffites and epiclastic sandstones, of the Nepisiguit Falls and Patrick Brook formations, respectively, generally occur along the fringes of the silicic volcanic complex. The flows and tuffites are intruded by quartz- and feldspar-phyric rhyolite (porphyry) dykes, sills, and domes. Although the volume of the silicic volcanic complex is large, evidence for a previously proposed collapsed-caldera model is lacking. On the basis of host-rock type and stratigraphic position, the sediment-hosted massive sulfides have been divided into three groups: the Brunswick-, Caribou- and Halfmile Lake-type deposits. Syngenetic feeder pipes and asociated alteration zones are generally not present beneath the Caribou- and the Halfmile Lake-type deposits and, if present at all, are poorly developed underneath the Brunswick-type.

"The auriferous mineralization at the Sigma-2 gold mine occurs in quartz-carbonate-tourmaline veins emplaced in a fractured granaphyre layer in the upper part of a differentiated gabbro-diorite sill. Kinematic indicators show that fracture planes were active as strike slip, dip-slip (reverse) and tensional faults.Measurements of attitudes of fractures and movement vectors indicate eight different sets that can be grouped into three systems: (I) an east-west oriented system includes a subvertical set and two other sets dipping north and south respectively; (2) a subhorizontal system of two conjugate sets bisected by a third tensional set; and (3)a system of sub vertical conjugate northeast and north-northwest trending sets.Kinematic analysis indicates that the subvertical set of the east west system was subjected to dextral strike-slip movement activated by a northwest-southeast compressive stress whereas the bulk deformation resulting from the remaining and subsequent seven sets can be explained by a protracted subhorizontal north-south compressive stress.The valuable gold mineralization is found principally in the fracture-filling veins of the subhorizontal system and subordinately in the other sets; among these other sets, the NE trending subvertical one is slightly more favourable.The over-all tectonic picture is that of an early mild dextral strike slip faulting in a ductile-brittle medium followed by a general flattening involving, first, a vertical and, later, a lateral extension by fracturing in a medium that had become brittle.The structural features are such that the differentiated sill could not be the source of the auriferous hydrothermal solutions."

The SAG mill motor current is used to control throughput. This system stabilizes the circuit but does not actively optimize circuit performance. An expert system was developed to aid the optimization of the circuit by manipulating the set-points of existing PI control loops. The system was implemented with the Comdale /C expert system package and has been on line since May 1992. The expert system has resulted in a net increase in tonnage of 7tph and a decrease in annual grinding media costs of $210,000. The system development is described and the benefits derived are presented."

"Al-Sc-Zr alloys form thermally stable L12 precipitates which provide high temperature strength. Although the overall fraction of L12 Al3Sc and Al3Zr may be increased by increasing scandium (Sc) and zirconium (Zr) content, such additions may increase primary phase fractions and do not produce desirable secondary phase morphologies. Rapid solidification techniques, such as melt spinning, increase solute atom concentration within the matrix. When the supersaturated matrix is aged, higher precipitate volume fractions at low Sc and Zr levels can be achieved improving high temperature strength. Melt spinning was used to rapidly solidify (107 k/s) a thin ribbon of Al-0.5Sc-0.4Zr at. %. The ribbon was compacted and extruded into 99.8% dense rods, and then aged using multi-step isochronal heat treatment up to 600°C. Precipitation strengthening was evaluated by ambient hardness measurement. The ambient hardness of melt-spun ribbon after precipitation hardening increased by 450 MPa (~67% increment) during isochronal heat treatment.INTRODUCTION Small Sc and Zr additions to aluminum improve strength and creep resistance above 300°C due to tri-aluminide precipitation of Al3(Sc,Zr) in L12 structures similar to ??, Ni3(Al,Ti) in nickel superalloy, but the Al3(Sc,Zr) particles have a Sc-rich core surrounded by Zr-rich shell (Figure 1). The Al3Zr shell limits atomic transport between the Al3Sc core and the matrix and reduces coherency strain. These factors reduce precipitate coarsening rate at elevated temperature (Bergner & Van Chi, 1977; Fujikawa, 1997; Knipling et al., 2011; Clouet et al., 2006).Figure 1. Detailed as-built project schedules are necessary to close out construction projects, benchmarking, forecasting, dispute resolution, and improving cost estimates of future projects. Manual procedures for developments of as-built documentation is time consuming, involves numerous interfaces and human interventions. This paper presents computational framework that encompasses automated site data acquisition and generates schedule updates utilizing commercially available project scheduling software. The work is carried out collaboratively with a Hydro Quebec team. The site data is captured employing mobile computing using iPad® type computers and Wi-Fi. The information is directly compiled in a centralized database server. The synchronization tool is a bi-directional application and is used on servers to communicate with iPad® computers deployed onsite. The captured data is stored in Microsoft SQL® relation database that consists of 63 entities. Computer software application has been developed in Microsoft Visual Basic® (vb.net) environment for extracting the collected site data, linking the database to the as planned schedule, and generating the actual, also known as as-built schedule. The development can be utilized in automated progress reporting, evaluating future bids, generating master schedules and a wide range of efficient EVM applications.

"IntroductionIn the past decade, metallurgical and mining companies have shown an increased interest in the licensing of technology. When licensing technology, it is usually to the benefit of the parties, to have at least some of the technology to be licensed protected by a patent.This paper is intended to bridge the gap between the engineer in the field of mining, metallurgy and mineral processing who is interested in exploiting an invention commercially, and the patent agent or intellectual property lawyer whom he/she might retain to prepare a patent application and then prosecute the application to obtain a granted patent. It is also intended to encourage the inventor or a small business concern to consider the value of patents in the sale and licensing of technology. The lawyer may subsequently advise and assist the inventor in licensing his/her invention.A brief outline of some of the basic features of the patent system follows. The nature of the information, which the patent professional requires from the inventor to enable him/her to draft a patent application, will also be considered in general terms. Furthermore, various types of licenses which may be drawn up between a licensor of specific technical information and a licensee, will be listed and briefly discussed. No attempt, however, will be made to give a comprehensive and detailed account of the above aspects; the interested reader should consult legal publication and reference books, and patent professionals for further specific information.A granted patent is a document which describes an invention and how to practise it. The claims of the granted patent, figuratively speaking, fence off the intellectual property the inventor regards as his invention. The Commissioner of Patents, representing the Government, grants to the inventor or his assignee the exclusive right of making, constructing and using the invention, and selling it to others to be used, for a limited period of time, in exchange for disclosing the invention to the public. Thus, a patent prevents others from practising the claimed invention but it does not, necessarily, bestow the right to the patentee to practise his own invention. The term of a patent now in Canada and in most of the developed countries of the world, is 20 years from the date of filing the patent application. In the United States the patent term is still 17 years from the date of issuance of the patent. In Canada, the term was changed to 20 years in the new Canadian Patent Act which came into force on October 2, 1989. Any patent application filed prior to that date or granted before it, retains a 17 year life, commencing at the time of grant."

Since 2009 Cobre las Cruces (CLC) has successfully operated a sustainable mining business near Seville, Spain, applying the most advanced hydrometallurgical technologies to process secondary copper sulphide ores through atmospheric leaching in ferric sulphate media and using oxygen sparging in a cascade of ten reactors. In comparison to conventional copper smelters, the CLC hydrometallurgical process does not generate SO2 gas, airborne emissions or slags. The copper ore is ground and sent directly to atmospheric leaching reactors; flotation is not required, and consequently, copper extraction is maximized at 93-95%, while producing 72,000 t/y copper cathodes of the highest purity (99.999 wt.% Cu, Grade A). Reserves for the CLC deposit were estimated at 16 million tonnes of ore averaging over 6 wt.% Cu and containing principally a chalcocite mineralization. Other copper bearing species include digenite, covellite, chalcopyrite, bornite and enargite. Pyrite represents over 70 wt.% of the ore. In the CLC leaching process, chalcocite reacts with ferric sulphate at approximately 90 ºC and copper is released into solution while ferric ions are reduced to ferrous ions. The ferric sulphate leachant is regenerated continuously by oxygen injection and consumes sulphuric acid. It is remarked that pyrite plays a crucial role to yield high copper leaching rates. When pyrite is oxidized, a small proportion of iron is co-leached and some sulphuric acid is generated. The CLC leaching technology has been designed to allow a certain level of pyrite oxidation, which is positive in many ways: (i) to maintain a Fe/Cu ratio in solution; (ii) to facilitate Fe(II) oxidation; (iii) to produce a high redox potential; and (iv) to counterbalance a bleed solution that removes some iron. Moreover, galvanic interaction between pyrite (cathode) and chalcocite (anode) can substantially increase atmospheric leaching kinetics and efficiency (copper recovery).

The technical feasibility of ammonia leaching of PGM bearing Platreef flotation concentrates was investigated as an alternative method for the recovery of base metals prior to precious metal recovery. The composition of the concentrates includes 2.02% Cu and 3.17% Ni, and the major base metal minerals are chalcopyrite and pentlandite. Optimal leaching conditions were initially established in shake flask experiments to be a solution containing 4 M NH4OH, 4 M (NH4)2CO3 and a pH range between 9 and 10. These were used as base case conditions in column and batch stirred tank reactor tests, where the effects of total ammonia concentration and operating temperature were explored further. At optimal conditions nearly 100% Cu and Ni extraction were obtained in the batch stirred tank reactor, and 95% Cu and 60% Ni extraction was obtained in columns. The activation energy for chalcopyrite and pentlandite was 36 kJ/mol and 16 kJ/mol, respectively, in both reactors, indicating different reaction pathways for the two minerals. Gas-liquid mass transfer appears to be the limiting reaction step in columns much more than in tanks, and the degree of ammonia loss to air is significant. This initial test work indicates the feasibility of using ammonia leaching for this and similar materials as an alternative route to conventional smelting and refining prior to PGM recovery, but a number of technical challenges still need to be overcome.

"The Lake George antimony deposit comprises a system of stibnite-bearing quartz veins that cut Silurian greywacke and slate. The stibnite-bearing ore zone is in part enveloped by a uraniferous zone.The ore-bearing quartz vein system occupies an easterly striking, gently north-dipping fracture system that cuts across north-northeasterly trending gently southwest-plunging, tight Acadian (early Middle Devonian) folds. This vein system continues at depth into a siliceous skarn zone intruded by altered granite porphyry dykes, which constitute probably a late phase of the Hawkshaw granitoid intrusion to the north.Most of the ore occurs in a northeast-plunging, trough shaped vein structure that formed where the vein system (gently north-dipping) intersects the axial surf ace zone (steeply northwest-dipping) of an Acadian synform. The trough shaped structure resulted from deflection of the fracture zone (containing the vein system) by competent beds.Emplacement of the quartz-stibnite veins was preceded by, and is in part penecontemporaneous with, the formation ofa micaceous-argillaceous alteration halo, which in turn intersects a patchy biotite alteration zone.The hypabyssal intrusions associated with the Lake George deposit probably represent a late phase (early Carboniferousr) of the nearby Hawkshaw intrusive granitoid complex. IntroductionThe Lake George Antimony Mine is situated 40 km southwest of Fredericton and 2.5 kin north of Lake George, New Brunswick (Fig. 1). The mine is owned by Consolidated Durham Mines and Resources Ltd.Shaw (1940) described the early history and development of the mine. In subsequent years, available drill cores were relogged by several geologists. Much new information became available when an extensive diamond drilling program (Kidd , 1970) was started by Consolidated Durham Mines and Resources Ltd. in 1970. A study of the geology and economic potential of the deposit was made by Glover (1973). Abbott and Watson (1975) made a study of the ore mineralogy. Available drill cores were relogged and a preliminary study of the fracture system in the mine was made by G.A. Pierce and A.A. Ruitenberg during 1976. Outcrops in the area sur rounding the mine are extremely sparse.Between 1976 and 1979 the present authors made a detailed study of the mine workings, available drill core and regional structure in the vicinity of the mine, with results set forth in this paper. The regional geologic setting of the deposit, the geometry and structural controls of the ore zones, and the mineral zonation and rock alteration are emphasized."

"Abstract - Detrital minerals of upper mantle origin occur in Holocene conglomerates, pediments and antmounds, and in Oligocene conglomerates in the Green River Basin of southwestern Wyoming. The minerals are derived from disaggregated eclogite and peridotite, and are similar to minerals found in mantle- derived igneous rocks such as kimberlite and lamproite, the primary host rocks for diamond. The Green River Basin bisects the lamproite fields of the Leucite Hills (Wyoming) and Kamas (Utah) and overlies the Archean Wyoming craton, which makes the region favorable for diamond occurrence. Lamproite is the favored host for the indicator minerals because unusual high-Fe salitic diopside macrocrysts from the antmounds and from the ~1 Ma old Leucite Hills lamproites to the northeast are compositionally identical. The salitic diopside is uncommon in other igneous rocks and could be a new indicator mineral for use in lamproite exploration. The Green River Basin indicator minerals are eroded from the ~29 Ma old Bishop Conglomerate, whose source area is the Uinta Mountains to the south. No continuous mineral train exists between the Uinta occurrences and those in the Green River Basin. Assessment of the minerals using established and new geochemical criteria indicate that they formed in an oxidizing upper mantle and were transported to the surface by either kimberlite or lamproite. The existence of cogenetic diamond is unlikely based on the mineral chemistry, but selective removal of diamond indicator minerals through weathering and fluvial transport cannot be excluded. Diamonds and mantle garnets are present in the northeastern Uinta Mountains, but they originated as part of the Diamond Hoax of 1872. A representative mineral assemblage from the true igneous host of the indicator minerals is required to fully establish their economic potential. Post-Oligocene erosion and Pleistocene glaciation have hindered efforts to locate a bona fide igneous source for the indicator minerals. Résumé - Des minéraux détritiques provenant du manteau supérieur ont été trouvés dans des conglomérats, des pédiments et des monticules de fourmis de l’Holocéne, et dans des conglomérats de l’Oligocène du Green River Basin, au sud-ouest du Wyoming. Ces minéraux sont issus du démantellement d’éclogites et de péridotites, et sont semblables aux minéraux trouvés dans des roches ignées provenant du manteau, comme les kimberlites et les lamproïtes. "A program of evaluation of in-mould electromagnetic stirring on the product of a straight-mould, billet continuous casting machine has been carried out. The effects on macrostructure, surface and internal quality, chemistry segregation and mechanical properties on carbon, low-alloy and resulphurized, free-machining steel billets and rolled bars are discussed. Operational aspects as a result of in-mould stirring are highlightedIntroductionA development program on electromagnetic stirring (EMS) in the mould of a continuous caster was started by Ferrco Engineering Limited in 1979, with the first experimental device being developed and installed at Lake Ontario Steel Company. As a result of these initial trials, new designs of in-mould EMS systems have been developed and are currently being used in continuous casters in North America and Europe. The rapid progress which has been made is in large measure due to the fruitful cooperation which has existed between the various parties, including Ferrco, the EMS equipment manufacturer, several operating plants and the University of Toronto.A brief review of some of the basic ' principles of electromagnetic stirring action on solidifying metal, and the landmarks of this process development, will explain the philosophy of this cooperation.From casting practice, it is well known that an equiaxed dendritic structure provides better' material properties than a columnar dendritic structure. Homogeneity of the equiaxed structure leads to better control of material properties, such as strength and ductility. Therefore, many efforts are being made to obtain this structure in continuous casting.The extent of the equiaxed zone is determined to a large degree by convective flow in the liquid. Fluid flow can fragment dendrites in the columnar zone, which then act as nuclei for grains in the equiaxed zone farther down the sump. This process is referred to as dendrite or grain multiplication."

A dynamic multiscale (MD/FE) method has been used to study dislocation generation and plastic deformation during a nanoindentation process which is physically associated with the generation of heat within the specimen and as a consequence with a temperature rise. Two different techniques are applied to study the temperature effect on the nanoindention process. In the first technique, a global Nose-Hoover thermostat is applied to the entire atomistic region to keep temperature constant during simulation (finite temperature approach). In the second method, the thermostat is applied only on a damping region along the MD/FE interface. Both techniques are able to effectively and efficiently absorb high frequency reflected waves from atomistic/continuum interface. The temperature profile of the atomistic region beneath the indenter is reported and discussed at four different initial substrate temperatures for both techniques. The loaddisplacement (load/unload) curves for different temperature-controlling techniques are compared and discussed. The nucleation and propagation of dislocations in the atomistic region are investigated for both techniques. Correlations between the observed features in the load-displacement curves with the motion and pile-up of dislocations are reported as a function of temperature.

"An analysis of the number of industrial injuries shows that the mining sector is particularly affected, since mining is one of the most dangerous industrial activities in Canada. This has led to numerous inquiries, and supports the need for an in-depth study aiming at the identification of factors responsible for these accidents. One possible factor often pointed at is the small crews incentives and this paper presents a scientific approach applied to check a potential link between bonus and accidents at two mining companies located in northwestern Quebec.The data required to do so were the accidents, the salaries and the number of hours worked at each mining site by the hourly paid personnel for the period from June 1979 to January 1982. The analysis of the results derived from the initial information shows different behaviours of the frequency rate vs the bonus rate at these mines. The number of days lost per accident is independent of the bonus rate at both mine sites, as shown by Khisquare tests on contingency tables.IntroductionA wide variety of opinions has been pinpointed by a survey of the literature related to individual or small crew incentives and industrial accidents in sectors of activity where it applies. In addition, various formulae of mining contracts take place in the industry on one part, and statistics from this sector indicate a high accident frequency rate on the other part. These fact s have lead to this scientific investigation which does isolate the direct impact of the bonus on workers' accidents. This study was undertaken with the full support of the Quebec Metal Mining Association.The conclusions of this preliminary phase of the researchproject are presented for two mining complexes in northwestern Quebec. The procedure is somewhat similar to the approach of the Belmoral Commission, with the underlying assumption that bonus has a direct impact on accidents."

"The Hardie group of cinnabar claims is in the interior of British Columbia; 25 miles northwest of the city of Kamloops. It is one of a number of mercury; properties scattered along a north trending belt 20 miles long and up to 5; miles wide. In all but one of these properties cinnabar is associated with; dolomite veinlets in zones of carbonate alteration in bedded rocks of Triassic; and Cretaceous (?) age; or in intrusives cutting these bedded rocks. No dolomite alteration or cinnabar mineralization is known in the undoubted Tertiary rocks adjacent to the mercury belt.The mercury showings of the Hardie group lie for the most part in a granitic stock cutting Cretaceous (?) volcanics. The rock in this intrusive shows marked variations in texture and has been described in earlier reports as granite and granodiorice, granite porphyry, and trachyte or dacite porphyry. At Hardie mountain the cinnabar mineralization, unlike that of the other properties, is associated with a fine-grained, almost chalcedoni c, quartz; carbonates, though present, are of minor importance. Some of the most interesting showings are found in an adit in the southeastern part of the property where cinnabar mineralization shows a very distinct structural but not a genetic relationship to a brown porphyry dyke 2 to 8 feet wide cutting a phase of the stock that may best be described as aplitic"

"The operations of a large-scale open-cut mine are simulated to produce a user-oriented interactive digital model. SIMULA is chosen as the programming language and a sophisticated data base system is designed to consider the complex information network of large mines. The main features of the program are the mine planning and mine evaluation modules. These modules are responsible for the computation of truck-shovel performance and other equipment details in a mine. Stochastic methods are employed to generate event times. The use of a Data Base Management System and the data base provide an efficient method of information storage and retrieval. Truck allocation techniques have been examined in detail and comparisons between random dispatching and conventional methods are made. The model is intended for mine operators and engineers and the program is well structured and very readable. It is hoped that these features will make the model readily acceptable.IntroductionThe Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering at the University of Queensland has been conducting research into computer simulation methods in mining since 1972. The research has been mainly applied to actual operations, with both open-cut and underground mining being equally emphasized. The results of the research to date have not only strengthened the methodology of the approach to complex mining problems, but have also increased confidence in the use of modelling and computer simulation technique s in mining.The model described in this paper translates a complex LHD situation into a user-oriented interactive digital model using SIMULA. The present methods of evaluating truck dispatching and trolley assist are tedious and laborious. This model provide s the engineer with readily acceptable means of rapidly assessing the relative merits of these techniques in a large-scale open-pit operation. Poor utilization figures in many current operations (for example, 40% for trucks, 70% for shovels) are of serious concern to mine officials and computer-controlled dynamic truck dispatching systems have been considered by some of these mines to improve equipment utilization ."

The stability of a rock mass is influenced by the presence of discontinuities. In assessing stability, it is required that one should know the frictional and cohesive properties of these contained weaknesses. In the study performed by the authors, a number of samples of diamond drill core containing open discontinuities were tested in shear. The results obtained were compared with values which resulted from back analyses of instabilities in the field.

"The main components of a ""PC” -based mineral inventory system are described in a sequence common to many real reserve/ resource estimation projects and in the practical context of problems and decision-making typically encountered in such studies. Some components are designed particuarly to improve the geostatistical instructional capability of the package. An important part of this approach involves the use of widely available software for data manipulation and evaluation in the design of a mineral inventory study progressing to mine design and feasibility. A variety of more or- less fixed routines written in high level languages provide acceptable computational speeds on a personal computer. These critical segments are linked by simple, short, compiled Basic programs easily adjustable to various data configurations and needs. IntroductionGeostatistical mineral inventory estimation has progressed greatly since its slow dissemination during the 1960s. The mining industry generally has accepted the benefits of the technique, notably the quantification of grade and geology, an indication of error in grade estimation, and of the mined volume / grade variance relationship (Clark, 1979, Isaacs and Srivastava, 1989).Acceptance has been slowed, first by complexities of geostatistical theory and second by a bewildering variety of computer systems and applications programs. Continuing improvements in education will facilitate a better understanding of the underlying theory.The purpose of this paper is to describe, in a practical context, the development of a geostatistical-based approach to reserve/resource estimation. The approach integrates various existing commercial software packages with a wide selection of programs developed by the authors for personal computers which estimate mineral inventories and educate users in the techniques applied; that is, the QMIN system.It is hoped that the approach presented here will convince mining and geological engineers concerned with resource estimation, of the soundness of geostatistical methods and its broad potential to their problems."

"This paper presents basic chemistry and operating conditions for the hydrolysis of ferric chloride into solid hematite and gaseous hydrogen chloride, and shows how this unit operation can be applied in chloride hydrometallurgy to regenerate strong hydrochloric acid and reject iron without also rejecting valuable metals such as nickel, copper and cobalt. Two examples are used to illustrate the hydrolysis technology and compare it to existing technology. The first is the regeneration of spent steel pickling acid, comparing hydrolysis to conventional pyrohydrolysis. The second example is the processing of a hypothetical low grade nickel laterite, comparing the novel chloride hydrolysis route to conventional sulphate HPAL technology.INTRODUCTION Whilst, in many respects, the control and removal of dissolved iron from chloride leach solutions can resemble the manner in which it is done in sulphate systems, chloride chemistry additionally offers the ability to achieve the same objectives in different ways (Harris, 2014). Conventionally, iron is oxidised to its ferric state (if necessary) and then precipitated with a base, usually magnesia where the feed is a laterite and lime where it is a sulphide, since calcium will precipitate sulphate formed during leaching. One method for controlling iron is to form FeOOH, either ß-FeOOH (akaganéite), a-FeOOH (goethite), or a mixture thereof (Fillipou and Choi, 2002). However, if akaganéite is formed, the precipitate will contain a significant chloride component (as high as 7% Cl), leading to chloride losses and difficulty in satisfactorily disposing of the residue. Washing chloride from akaganéite is almost impossible due to the propensity of the solids to undergo peptization. The conventional approach requires the addition of a base, but it is based to some extent on controlled supersaturation precipitation (Demopoulos, 2009), which produces a more uniform and crystalline material and is far more attractive than, for example, the turboaeration process proposed by Great Central Mines in their chloride copper process (Raudsepp & Beattie, 1986)."

In 2010 the United States Environmental Protection Agency (UESPA) revised the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) by lowering the permissible value to a 1-hour average SO2 concentration of 75 ppb. In 2012, the USEPA designated the Miami area as non-attaining for the new SO2 NAAQS. A number of options were studied to assist in bringing the Miami smelter into attainment with the new standard. The chosen solution included: Installation of a large tertiary hooding system over the converter aisle; Hooding of the anode vessels and treatment of the anode gas in a baghouse; Installation of a large 2,325,212 Nm3/hr caustic scrubber to treat the captured converter fugitives and anode off-gases; Installation of a secondary ESP for the tapping fugitive off-gas treatment system; and the continuous scrubbing of all acid plant tail stack gases. The modifications have reduced smelter SO2 emissions by 85%, achieving a world class SO2 stack emissions rate of 0.45 kg of SO2/tonne Cu. INTRODUCTION The Freeport McMoRan Miami smelter has been previously described in literature (Steinborn, Pasca, Sallee, Binegar, Bhappu). For the sake of brevity a brief description is given here. The Miami smelter is located 129 km east of Phoenix, Arizona near the town of Miami, Arizona. The smelter was established in 1915 and has undergone a number of process upgrades and modernizations over the years. The present smelter consists of an Isasmelt furnace, an electric settling furnace, four Hoboken converters, two anode refining vessels & one casting wheel; and one double contact sulfuric acid plant. Concentrates are railed & trucked to Miami from four Freeport McMoRan mines located in Arizona & New Mexico. The wet concentrates, typically containing 10% H2O with a Cu/S ratio of 0.85, are smelted in an Isasmelt furnace to a matte grade of 58%. The entire output from the Isasmelt is laundered into an Elkem electric furnace (originally installed in 1972 as the primary smelting furnace) for separation into matte and slag. Slag containing 0.85% Cu is skimmed from the electric furnace and discarded. Molten matte, containing 60% Cu, is tapped from the electric furnace and processed in one of four Hoboken converters to produce blister copper. Two anode refining vessels further refine the blister copper before the final product is cast on a single, 30 mold, casting wheel. All of the anodes produced at Miami are shipped to the Freeport McMoRan electrolytic refinery in El Paso Texas for refining into cathode copper. Smelter off-gases from the Isasmelt, electric furnace and Hoboken converters are combined and treated in a double contact acid plant to produce sulfuric acid. Acid produced at Miami is internally consumed at Freeport McMoRan mines in the region.
