The short-circuiting tendency of a copper electrowinning cell (EW) based on the roughness of cathode deposits was investigated with varying parameters such as Cu concentration, guar concentration, current density, and temperature. A bench scale EW cell was set up to produce copper under conditions similar to industrial Cu EW. In addition, a statistical analysis and finite element analysis were performed to analyze the deposited thickness, surface roughness and maximum feature height. Interaction data for the cathode deposits suggest that current density and Cu concentration together affect the roughness of deposit more than the combined effect of guar and temperature. Model predictions of roughness were similar to experimental values. The predicted time to short-circuiting was similar to the measured time. This study provides an industrial relevant baseline against which new operating parameters can be compared.

Fe(III)-As(V) precipitates were synthesized from the Fe(II)-As(V)-SO42--H2O system at 90°C in initial Fe(II)/As(V) molar ratios of 4.0 and 5.0, respectively. The synthesis were carried out by introducing oxygen gas into the system to oxidize Fe(II) ions into Fe (III) ions, and at the same time, adding aqueous sodium carbonate solution into the system to neutralize the acid released by the hydrolysis reactions, with the purpose of keeping the pH constant at 1.5±0.05. The precipitates obtained were characterized by XRD, chemical composition analysis, SEM, XPS, and Raman spectrum. The results indicated that the particles in the precipitates were in the morphology of irregular aggregation with their sizes in the range of about 1–4 µm. The precipitates consisted of scorodite, ferric arsenate and amorphous hydrated ferric oxide, of which amorphous hydrated ferric oxide formulated as Fe(OH)x(SO42-)y. The characteristic XPS peaks of Fe-AsO43- and Fe-O in the precipitates located at 711.8 and 713.3 eV, separately, and the existence of amorphous hydrated ferric oxide led to two series of shake off lines developed over the end of high binding energy of Fe2p XPS. The precipitates were stable in TCLP tests at pH 4.93 for 60 hours with the arsenic concentrations in the leaching solutions being 0.27 mg/L and 0.59 mg/L for the precipitates prepared in the initial Fe(II)/As(V) molar ratios of 4.0 and 5.0, respectively. The tests for the long-term stability of the precipitates were carried out by leaching them for 40 days at 25°C under various media in the pH range from 9.50 to 10.57, and the results showed that the precipitates synthesized in this study were much more stable than those by previous researchers.

"Porphyry molybdenum-tungsten mineralization on the east flank of Hudson Bay Mountain crops out over 5 km2 and is intersected to depths of 2 km. Features such as a hornblende-biotite aureole, mineralogical zoning and dike, vein and fracture geometries within lithologies of the Middle to Lower Jurassic Hazelton Group and Cretaceous Skeena Group reflect an intrusive complex, the Upper Cretaceous to Early Tertiary Hudson Bay Mountain stock which has been intersected by drill holes. The stock is believed to be the mineralizing agent. A southeast-dipping granodiorite sill has been outlined by drilling within the Hazelton Group. Molybdenite and scheelite veins cut all rock types; however, the granodiorite sill hosts a higher density of fine-grained, banded, quartz-molybdenite and pegmatitic quartz-molybdenite veins reflecting a competency contrast between the intrusive sill and other country rock. Due to the relative abundance of these veins, grade is higher within areas of the sill. Above the 15000£ cross-cut 20.6 million tonnes grading 0.401% MoS2 and 0.041% W03 have been defined. During exploration of the deposit sampling procedures had to be adjusted because of the nugget effect attributed to drill intersections of banded and pegmatitic veins.IntroductionMolybdenite was discovered in outcrop at the foot of Kathlyn Glacier on Hudson Bay Mountain and first reported by the Geological Survey of Canada in 1944. The deposit has several names: Hudson Bay Mountain or Glacier Gulch, both after its location, and Yorke-Hardy after the original staker.The deposit is on the east flank of Hudson Bay Mountain, 9 km northwest of Smithers, west-central British Columbia, within NTS area 93L/14 (54° 49' North, 127° 18' West, Fig. 1). Hudson Bay Mountain, on the southern edge of the Bulkley Valley, is a dominant topographical feature reaching 2590 m elevation. Mineralization is partly overlain by the Kathyln Glacier which is visible from Highway 16. Access to the 3100 m of underground development is from a portal at 1066 m elevation on the east slope of Hudson Bay Mountain."

In the fall of 1961, Cominco dis-carded its long-established system of feeding the lead blast furnaces by narrow-gauge tram and V-cars, and installed an elevated monorail bucket system. This system automatically loads buckets of sinter, along with the correct proportion of coke, and delivers them to any of several designated furnaces. Direct labour usage has been reduced by nine men per day; improved coke proportioning has been achieved; and a major safety hazard has been eliminated. Numerous data in the literature confirm that the chemical composition and consumption of grinding media influence electrochemical properties of flotation suspension as well as effectiveness and selectivity of upgrading processes. During a milling process, attrition of grinding media is observed. Depending on the susceptibility to abrasion, the grinding media influence, to a different extent, the redox potential, pH as well as flotation efficiency. As a result, different upgradeability of sulfide minerals is observed. The paper presents laboratory scale flotation results, obtained for the copper sulfide ore from Polkowice Region of KGHM Polska Miedz S.A. in Poland ground in the presence of forged steel, highchrome iron and stainless steel as the grinding media. The investigated flotation feed contained 36 g/t (ppm) of silver and 1.86 % of copper. Several flotation tests were conducted using fixed amount of frother and a mixture of sodium ethyl and isobutyl xanthates as the collector at three different doses of 75, 100 and 125 g/t. A comparison of the obtained results confirmed that the application of grinding media with different chemical compositions influenced the electrochemical properties of the suspension and recovery of silver and copper in the final concentrate. The highest values of redox potential were observed for the stainless steel as the grinding medium. Moreover, in the presence of this type of grinding media, regardless of the collector dosage, the best silver upgrading was observed. For the forged and high-chrome iron media, the recovery of silver depended on the collector dosage. It is indicated that higher levels of the redox potential, together with smaller amount of iron released from the grinding medium, improve the flotation of the silver-bearing mineral compounds from the copper sulfide ore.

Canada is a world leader in uranium exploration, but many deposits are located in remote regions making exploration targeting challenging. Novel approaches are needed to detect the presence of large-scale ore-forming systems and to vector toward mineralization. Boron is commonly used as a key pathfinder element associated with sandstone/unconformity-hosted and basement-hosted uranium deposits in the Athabasca Basin, but the genetic relationship remains uncertain. Alteration assemblages containing boron geochemical anomalies are commonly spatially-associated with – and possibly coeval with – uranium mineralization. Boron is commonly found in tourmaline minerals but in some portions of ore deposits the host mineral for the anomalous boron remains cryptic. Boron coordination chemistry within alteration haloes can better constrain boron host mineralogy, provide insight into the nature of the boron-uranium relationship, and thus has the potential to better constrain targets for exploration. Synchrotron-source X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy is a direct, element-specific analysis that identifies boron coordinated in both trigonally- (BO3) and tetrahedrally-coordinated (BO4) forms. This makes XANES uniquely suited for identifying the geochemical hosts for boron that may be related to hydrothermal ore forming processes. XANES spectroscopy was conducted on whole-rock assay powders from uranium deposits across the Athabasca basin containing boron concentrations ranging from <10 ppm to >10,000 ppm. XANES directly identifies the relative amount of trigonally- (BO3) and tetrahedrally-coordinated (BO4) boron in these complex mineralogical mixtures. Our work suggests a link between boron and uranium that is likely related to the unique physiochemical characteristics of ore bearing fluids that may provide a unique vector to mineralization.

"Continuous thickening by an operation called sedimentation is the separation of suspended solid particles from a liquid stream by gravity settling. The primary purpose of thickening is to increase the solids concentration of the feed stream. High rate thickeners are designed specifically to maximise the flocculation efficiency. A detailed investigation has been carried out to understand the influence of ore type and operating parameters such as bed level, bed mass, rake arm torque and flocculent concentration on thickening operation. Tata steel’s Noamundi plant data shows that variation in ore type, and operating parameters are major contributors to fluctuation in thickener performance. A lot of research has been done earlier on thickening operation but effect of ore type and operating variables by using plant data was never touched before.In this context, the performance of thickener was evaluated by daily data to study the influence of ore type and operating variables on thickener operation. Investigation shows that friable ore % in feed mix is proportional to slime density because friable ore is porous & brittle in nature. As a result, friable ore generates more fines/ultrafine during communition process in wash plant. Increase in flocculant concentration and bed mass is showing a positive change on high rate thickener performance Investigation shows that optimum bed mass and flocculant concentration is required to achieve desired pulp density in thickener underflow at different feed pulp density (g/cc).INTRODUCTIONOver the years, Iron Ore Beneficiation at Tata Steel, Noamundi has seen varied changes. Depletion of high grade iron and with increasing iron ore throughputs coupled with lowering of the hard ore a subsequent increase in slime generation, slime management and clear water requirement for wet Plant has thrown up myriad challenges. To overcome these challenges, many improvements initiatives were taken by Tata Steel in last decade. One of the major changes is the recent High Rate Thickener commissioning at Tata Steel Noamundi to cater the high iron ore throughput requirement. Slime reporting to Thickener has increased from 1.4 MTPA 2.5 MTPA over the last few decades. The above changes further aggravate the poor settling and dewatering characteristics of the slurry which is being feed to HRT. Considering the above mentioned constraints and stringent environmental implication proper water management has become a major challenge to reckon with. The thickener is used to increase the concentration of the suspension by sedimentation, accompanied by the formation of a clear liquid. In most cases the concentration of the suspension is high and hindered settling takes place."

"The Luscar Mine is a metallurgical coal mine located in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies, 41 km southeast of Hinton, Alberta. The mine is operated by Cardinal River Coals Ltd., a 50/50 joint venture between Luscar Ltd. and Consolidation Coal Company of Canada. The mine produces a high quality medium volatile metallurgical coal which is sold on the export market principally to Japan and South Korea. Operations consist of a surface mine with capacity to produce 3.0 million tonnes per year and an underground mine which is currently mothballed due to market conditions.GeologyBedrock units within the Luscar minesite are of Devonian to Upper Cretaceous age. The commercial coal measures in the area are, however, confined within the Lower Luscar Formation. The Luscar Formation consists of a 460-metre thick sequence of interbedded sandstones, shales and coal seams. The sequence is primarily deltaic in origin, and is bounded to the north and south at the Luscar mine by tectonically induced thrust faulting.The only mineable coal seam at Luscar is referred to locally as the Jewel seam. Average thickness of this coal measure is usually 10.5 m to 14 m, although in some areas folding and faulting has produced ""pods"" of coal from 15 m to over 40 m thick while in others the structural deformation has thinned the coal to 3.0 m to 4.6 m. Waste within the Jewel seam seldom exceeds a metre of shale, carbonaceous shale or infrequent sandstone stringers.Reserves and Coal QualityProven surface mineable reserves, based on pit scheduling through 1996, are 50.8 million raw tonnes. An additional 19.2 million raw tonnes are contained in possible extensions to the present planned operations. These surface mineable reserves are considered to be those reserves within 155 m of the surface. In 2003, Phelps Dodge Mining Company decided to pursue the design and construction of a Central Analytical Laboratory to provide chemical analyses for their Arizona and New Mexico operations. This centralized approach was selected in place of refurbishing six (6) older laboratories that operated at the various Phelps Dodge sites, and which would not have permitted full automation and use of robotics. The new lab was designed by the Process Technology Center (PTC) Material Characterization Group in cooperation with IMP Group. The Central Analytical Service Center (CASC) encompasses fully automated sample preparation of blast holes and geological samples weighing up to 15 kg/sample. The CASC also includes the first "wet chemistry module" worldwide to be operated by robotics systems to perform Total Cu, Acid Soluble Cu, and Quick Leach Tests (QLT), and a fully automated lab for electrowon copper cathode. The new lab also offers flexibility for handling specialty samples and analyses by either semi-automated or manual mode. Data handling and transfer is accomplished using the commercially available StarLIMS system. Commissioning was accomplished within five (5) months of startup during which the CASC also handled 86% of a full production load. The 24/7 lab operation has already exceeded its design capacity, has achieved considerable savings in operating cost, reduced sample preparation errors, and significantly increased analytical quality.

"The Britannia ore deposits are approximately 20 miles north of Vancouver; and occur in a prominent ridge facing Howe sound. A large ironstained bluff first attracted the serious attention of early prospectors. This; upon investigation; proved to be the outcrop of a large copper orebody. The highest outcrops were 4; 300 feet above sea-level.The original discovery was made in 1888, but no real development took place until 1902. The first mining was done in what came to be known as the Jane orebody, and some production was obtained from this in 1905. Underground exploration led to the discovery of several other orebodies. The first main adit, the 1,050-foot level, was driven to tap the ore at an elevation of 3,300 feet above sea-level. During succeeding years, however, long adits were driven from points lower down on the mountain side. These, with connecting shafts, followed the ore to horizons well below sea-level. The lowest working has now reached to 880 feet below sea-level. The property has been in almost continuous operation since its original exploitation in 1905. Until the end of 1944, 732,414,420 pounds of copper and 261,125 ounces of gold had been produced from the mine."

A DIGHEM survey was flown in the Belford-Montcalm Township area of Ontario in November 1975. This 600-linemile survey resulted in the detection of 134 EM anomalies. The Montcalm Township copper-nickel discovery yielded a single-line anomaly having a conductance of 154 mhos. This anomaly was highly visible because (a) it had the highest conductance in the survey area, (b) it correlated with a 175-gamma thumbprint-shaped magnetic anomaly and (c) it was isolated from long conductive bands. The deposit is a copper-nickel pyrrhotite body which occurs in gabbro and strikes north-south, parallel to the flight lines. The DIGHEM survey was flown north-south, because the exploration program was primarily concerned with locating copper-zinc sulphides in the east-west-striking felsic volcanics. The flight line passed close to the deposit and yielded a 9-ppm anomaly on the chart record. The computer analysis showed that a deposit of exceptionally high conductance (154 mhos) caused the relatively weak (9 ppm) anomaly. The ground follow-up program of magnetics and EM led quickly to the discovery drill hole, which penetrated the orebody in September 1976. Subsequent geophysical surveys consisted of horizontal-loop EM, pulse EM, magnetic and induced polarization surveys over an area of about 8 claims. In addition, a detailed DIGHEM" airborne survey was flown at a line spacing of 100 m to evaluate the entire property of 620 claims. This detailed survey yielded EM conductor maps and contour maps of resistivity, magnetics and enhanced magnetics.

The paper describes an investigation of some of the tensile properties of single crystal vanadium, poly-crystalline vanadium and polycrystal-line tantalum, in the range of: W°C to -196°C. Techniques employed in the preparation and testing of specimens are discussed in detail. Some results of determinations of the temperature dependence of yield stress and ductility are given, and discussed in terms of the Cottrell-Bilby Theory of yielding. At subnormal temperatures, all the body-centred cubic transition metals in the Periodic Table exhibit; a) the "yield phenomenon" in tension, b) a strong temperature and strain rate dependence of yield stress, and c) a large decrease or complete loss of ductility. The yield phenomenon (existence of an upper and lower yield point) has been explained by Cottrell and Bilby ( 1) in terms of the dislocation-locking effect

"Since the most of mineral processing are wet, and for more specific applications where it is necessary to increase the purity through leaching and / or concentration, the proper dispersion is the first, and perhaps more crucial stage in the whole chain of processing. This specific process is based on the formation of a dispersion or suspension of mineral, trying to make the mixture as homogeneous as possible, and with specific rheological conditions. Sometimes it is not enough agitation to make it happen, so that chemical additives are used as an aid. However, the addition of chemicals strongly alters the viscosity and other rheological properties of the suspension factor to consider for subsequent steps to ore beneficiation. In other hand, in a process where no chemicals used often employ large quantities of water to achieve dispersion. But if an efficient chemical agent, which optimizes said dispersion through a specific physicochemical effect on the particle surface is used, also it can generate rheological advantages, besides achieving rational use of water and increase the recoveries of the product main about also optimal costs. The aim of this work is to find the optimal rheological conditions for a dispersion of kaolin as study case, looking for stability, best disaggregation, viscosity and pseudoplasticity.To find the optimal additive, the evaluation parameters were: 1) Best degree of dispersion of the suspensions according to the analysis of the flow curve; 2) Best level of disaggregation of particle chemical analysis delaminated by Particle Size Distribution; and 3) Best thixotropic rheological parameters and pseudoplasticity. Finally the optimum additive as one that meets the best combination of parameters is proposed.INTRODUCTIONKaolin is a clay material formed by altering of feldspar composed mainly for kaolinite. Depending on the application, the kaolin as raw material must be refined and processed because the ores of clays contain usually a lot of impurities derived of its sedimentary source, such as feldspar, mica and quartz (Torres, et. al., 2011). According to the experience on the plant floor and the publication of several scientific papers, it is known that the dispersion is a crucial stage in mineral processing (Greene, Duke, & Hunter, 1965) (Raghavan, et. al., 2004), not only because of the disaggregation of particles, besides because of the humectation of them. Is clear that disaggregation of particles give to the suspensions rheological stability, and the humectation improves the effect of further processes like grinding or chemical treatment. The dispersion process involves making a suspension of the mineral with a solvent which is usually water, to obtain a homogeneous dispersion, with the aid of energy of stirring. Sometimes is not enough the agitation (even with high energy) for this to occur, so is necessary the use of dispersing substances which introduce ions and molecules as modifiers of chemical potential, forcing the molecules of the material to disperse. The bioleaching of fine low grade copper sulfide ore is described. A sample of ground (> 1 mm) copper ore from Sarcheshmeh, Iran, was subjected to a series of agglomeration procedures and subsequently leached. The best agglomerate was obtained by using lime and sulfuric acid as binders. A column bioleaching test of agglomerated ore was then run for 105 days along with a non-inoculated control column having thymol as bactericide. The results show that about 77.5% of copper was extracted in the bioleaching, whereas the control column achieved only 57% copper leaching.

INTRODUCTION THE Western Canada sedimentary basin has one feature in common with the Precambrian Shield area: it also was a great chemical laboratory. The mining industry of Canada exploits the end products of chemical experiments that occurred on the Shield during periods of repeated disturbances in Precambrian times. The petroleum industry on the other band exploits what also appears to be the final results of chemical experiments that took place throughout all of post-Precambrian up to Tertiary times. Since the subject of this paper is a factual study of Alberta well waters, no attempt is made to answer significant questions pertaining to the probable role waters play in the generation of oil, or to the significance of the effects of structure and depth on waters. Data from several hundred well-water analyses were compiled by the writer in a series of charts and diagrams, of which those included in this paper are representative. Early studies indicated the possibility that outstanding anomalies in general concentration of waters and in greatly increased concentration of elements such as calcium, magnesium, bromine, and iodine for example, might be expected from wells that produced oil or were in the immediate vicinity of producers. The water analyses from wells which? were drilled at a later date did not confirm this possibility, and it is suggested that, aside from their initial value to the petroleum engineer or to. those interested in the commercial possibilities of brines, no definite significance as an aid in oil discovery can be attributed to water analyses.

Lithium is the lightest and electrochemically most reactive of all metals. Renewed interest in lithium coincides with research in lithium batteries and power generation by atomic fusion. Ontario lithium resources are contained in spodumene pegmatites that can form where medium- to high-grade metamorphic volcanic-sedimentary formations are intruded by pegmatite and porphyritic granitic rocks. Spodumene pegmatites occur in at least twelve locales throughout northern Ontario, all of which are in the Superior Province of the Precambrian Shield. Tantalum, cesium, rubidium, beryllium, niobium and tin also were noted with lithium in spodumene pegmatites. Considerable potential remains for discovery of additional lithium and rare-element pegmatites in northern Ontario.
