It has long been recognized that platinum-group-element (PGE) deposits in layered intrusions preferentially occur in intrusions that crystallized from high-Mg parent magmas. Recent studies suggest that evaluation of any given intrusion for economic PGE potential should also include assessment of the PGE, sulfur and chlorine concentrations in the cumulates and potential parent liquids. PGE: Magmas that contain relatively abundant Pt and Pd are the best candidates for forming economic deposits. Although analyses of coeval sills and dikes are the best indicators of primary magmatic PGE concentrations, analysis of the cumulates themselves is also valuable. For example, within the Stillwater complex, background PGE values in cumulates from the ultramafic sections of the complex contain, on average, several 10s of ppb Pt and Pd. Background concentrations of this order are suggestive that the magma was not depleted in the PGE. Sulfur: Conventional petrogenetic models for the formation of PGE deposits in layered intrusions require the PGE to have been concentrated during a magmatic sulfide-saturation event. In contrast, some hydro thermal models suggest that sulfur and the PGE were mobilized from footwall cumulates by upward-migrating, high-temperature hydrothermal fluids. Both models suggest that significant PGE deposits are likely to occur at and below the level where stratigraphic increases in whole rock sulfur concentrations occur. Chlorine: In both the Stillwater and Bushveld complexes the cumulate sequences below the major PGE-bearing zones contain anomalous Cl-rich apatite. The chlorapatite component of apatite in these rocks may exceed 40% and, in the Stillwater complex, typically exceeds 90%. It is stressed that pristine igneous mineral analysis and not whole rock data be used, as whole rock Cl concentrations may be affected by very localized (grain boundary), low-temperature alteration. Intrusions that crystallized from high-Mg, high-Cl magmas appear to have the best potential to host significant PGE deposits.

"Within six months from award of a project management contract, Les Mines Dumagami Limitée, Cadillac, Quebec, was operating its new hoisting facility. This was accomplished with less than a six-week shutdown of mine production while still maintaining shaft access for underground maintenance.The work involved installing a refurbished /3.5 ft diameter double drum hoist, replacing a timber headframe with a newsteel headframe, increasing the ore bin capacity from 500tons to 1000 tons, constructing a new substation, and upgrading related facilities.This paper describes the work and methods used by various contractors, Les Mines Dumagami Limitée and J.S. Redpath Mining Consultants Limited to bring this project to a successful completion. It discusses the history of the project from proposal stage through to the design, procurement, scheduling, and construction management. The paper also comments on problems that were encountered and the methods used to overcome them.IntroductionThe Donald J. Laronde Mine of Les Mines Dumagami Limitée (Dumagarni), a gold and copper producer, is located in northwestern Quebec, approximately half way between Val d'Or and Rouyn. The mine started production in the spring of 1988 and the first gold bar was poured in June 1988.Following a request by Dumagami, on February 22, 1989, J.S. Redpath Mining Consultants Limited(Redpath) delivered a proposal to increase hoisting capabilities from 1500 tpd to a minimum of 2500tpd. Although various concepts were considered, Redpath proposed a new hoist house along the same shaft axis as the existing hoist, and located on the site of the existing substation. They would then provide a new substation, replace the headframe with a largersteel structure , gain extra storage capacities by increasing the bin heights, and raising the roof of the bin house accordingly.Although underground mining would have to be stopped for a month, the mill production would be maintained by feed from Dumagami's open pit.Figure 1 shows the original plant layout and Figure 2 represents the general arrangement after the project was completed . Table 1 compares the original hoisting facilities to the new facilities.On March 2, Dumagami awarded Redpath a contract that included preliminary engineering, detailed engineering, procurement and contract administration, and later added construction management. The preliminary engineering refined the initialconcept, selected major equipment, and prepared schedules and capital cost estimates for the total project."

"Ore reserves at Brunswick Mining and Smelting totalled 101(106) tonnes grading 97 grams tonne-1 silver at the end of 1981. Silver is recovered as a byproduct in the copper, lead and bulk concentrates and is lost to the zinc concentrate and plant tailings. Recovery of silver for the year 1981 was 58,5%. The loss of potential revenue is in excess of Cdn $50(106) year-1 at current silver prices and milling rates.Silver is known to occur in solid solution in galena and as tetrshedrite. Evidence indicating the identity and significance of a third silverbearing mineral assemblage is reviewed and the distribution of silver losses is detailed. Characteristics of each the carrier which may be responsible for observed distribution, including size, surface quality, liberation and composition are considered, and the third carrier is shown to have possible implications for improved silver recovery by other Canadian producers as well as by Brunswick Mining.Silver tetrahedrite tailings distributed tailings and losses occur as coarse, free and as very fine unliberated galena in losses of the third carrier are between the zinc concentrate and are concentrated in the finest size fractions. Process alternatives for enhanced silver recovery by physical and chemical means are reviewed."

"Low and inconsistent recoveries of aluminum in the production of aluminum-killed steels triggered an extensive research program on the aluminum dissolution kinetics at McGill University. This research program led to the understanding of the melting kinetics and the hydrodynamics of making additions to liquid steel. It showed the necessity of gradually releasing liquid aluminum at the bottom of the ladle to increase aluminum recoveries.This knowledge was verified in practice at Sidbec-Dosco, where a prototype aluminum wire injector was developed and installed for the first time in Canada. The industrial application showed the validity of the theoretical and experimental results and provided further data for the mathematical modelling of the process.The development of the theoretical understanding, the industrial results, and the interaction between university and industry are presented.IntroductionAluminum is an extremely effective deoxidizer of molten steel; nevertheless, an efficient method of adding it to steel has eluded steelmakers for many years. It is well known that the recovery of aluminum used in the production of aluminum killed steel is both low and eratic, especially when the aluminum is added in the form of bars or lumps from chutes into filling ladles, a practice still common in many of today's steelmaking operations.As the density of aluminum is only about 40010 that of molten steel, it is conceivable that loose bars of aluminum simply ""thrown"" into a filling ladle will resurface before any appreciable dissolution of the aluminum has occurred, particularly if the depth of penetration of the additions is small. Before one can conclude that this is indeed the case, it is necessary to know the melting kinetics of an aluminum addition. Back in 1972, this information was not available; hence an extensive research program which focused on melting kinetics was initiated at McGill University."

"The effect of composition and process variables on the properties of Marmet and modified Ni-Hard slugs will be discussed. The effect of shape on the over-all performance of grinding media and its relationship to the end product has been investigated and these results will be reviewed. The cost effectiveness of slugs versus balls has been well documented under various operating conditions and this will be presented in detail. IntroductionThe selection of grinding media is based on the cost-to-wear ratio combined with the consideration that it must stand repeated impacts without breaking. The specific consumption of grinding balls and slugs depend s primarily on their microstructure, which, in turn, is controlled by chemical composition and by the processing condition s to which they are subjected during manufacture.The first part of the paper deals with the optimization of alloy content to produce cast iron slugs with microstructures consisting essentially of marten site and carbide and with hardnesses of 650 B.H.N. and higher. The second part deals with the use of cast iron slugs to replace forged steel balls in milling operations. Tests indicate that the shape of the media has little if any effect on results and that the hardness and microstructure of grinding media will determine its relative performance. Where price is equal under similar milling conditions, the cost effectiveness of cast iron slugs is superior to that of forged steel balls.In order to understand the role of alloying elements in cast irons, it is judicious to consider the microstructural changes which occur during solidification and subsequent cooling, particularly from above the eutectoid temperature. Solidification starts with the formation and growth of dendrites of austenite. As temperature decreases, an eutectic nucleates and grows between the primary austenite dendrites. Immediately after solidification, the structure consists of proeutectic austenite and of the eutectic of primary carbides and austenite. On cooling to room temperature, austenite can be retained or transformed to pearlite, bainite, martensite or mixtures thereof. It is necessary to prevent decomposition of austenite into pearlite by adjusting the alloy content. For best abrasion resistance, the microstructure at room temperature should consist essentially of martensite and carbide. These types of irons are known as ""martensitic irons "". Depending on the carbon content of the austenite and cooling rate, "" as-cast"" martensitic irons will contain different proportions of martensite and retained austenite. The more carbon in solution in the austenite, the lower is the temperature at which the martensitic transfoemation takes place. By the time room temperature is reached ., the transformation is seldom complete, and the end product is generally a mixture of martensite and retained austenite."

"Hydraulic fracture (HF) growth through naturally fractured rocks challenges the development of accurate predictive HF models. The authors present laboratory experiments differentiating behaviours associated with orthogonal and oblique intersections between HFs and natural fractures (NFs). HFs were created in sandstone and crystalline (gabbro) rock specimens, impinging orthogonally or obliquely on an unbonded machined frictional interface. Ultrasound monitoring was used to observe the rate of propagation through the interface. A contrast was observed between direct and offset crossing for orthogonal and oblique intersection, respectively. The stresses required to promote crossing depended on the intersection angle between HFs and NFs.RÉSUMÉ La propagation des fractures hydrauliques (FH) dans les roches naturellement fracturées pose un défi pour le développement de modèles prédictifs. Nous présentons des essais en laboratoire qui différencient les comportements associés aux intersections orthogonales et obliques entre les FH et les fractures naturelles. Des FH ont été créées dans des spécimens de grès et de roches cristallines (gabbro), heurtés de manière orthogonale ou oblique sur une interface machinée, non liée, de frottement. Un suivi par ultrasons a servi à observer le taux de propagation à travers l’interface. Un contraste a été observé entre un croisement direct et un croisement indirect des intersections respectivement orthogonales et obliques. Les contraintes requises pour promouvoir le croisement variaient selon l’angle d’intersection entre les FH et les fractures naturelles."

The continuing increase in costs for power and fuel are affecting significantly the cost of milling Canadian ores. In order to ascertain the scope and source of energy consumption in Canadian mills for further energy conservation opportunities, CANMET, in cooperation with the Canadian Mineral Processors, carried out a detailed survey on the metallic mineral processing plants. Sixty-seven mills representing almost 300 million tons of annual capacity participated in the survey. The results indicated that, in general, copper and iron ore mills, representing the bulk of the tonnage, consumed relatively low levels of energy per ton. Nickel-copper, zinc-copper and lead-zinc .ore mills were moderate in energy consumption, and uranium and some copper-lead-zinc mills reported much higher energy consumptions due primarily to the increased heat requirements of the ore pulp. Although plant heating costs varied somewhat with location, it was apparent that the lowest heating costs were achieved by those plants built with proper insulation and energy conservation design. If the cost per million British thermal units is taken as $2.00, the mill energy costs generally ranged from 40ft to $1.20 per ton.

"On the da y shift in Number One Mine at Nanaimo on Vancouver Island, on May 3, 1887, William Griffiths, a coal miner with many years experience, fired a shot to advance the face of the crosscut. A flame ran out for a distance of fifteen feet along the roof and then extended up the slope for ten to twelve feet, and although many would have called this a blowing out shot, Griffiths said it was just a feeder. ""A blower"", he said, ""would have caused an explosion."" 1There was no explosion. Griffiths reported gas and the area was cleared for three hours and then work resumed. When the shift changed at 3:00 p.m., the fireman reported all places clear of gas and the ventilation good.2The ventilation in Number One Mine was the best anyone had ever seen. The air in the mine was almost too cold. The current was so strong that it sometimes blew out the flame on the miners' fish oil lamps. It delivered five to six hundred cubic feet of air for every man and animal working in the mine. The law required only one hundred cubic feet 3The miners considered Number One to be relatively safe. The manager was proud of the mine and its up-to-date equipment"". Recently, there had been reports from France and America about the explosiveness of coal dust, but the manager did not think his mine was sufficiently dusty to be dangerous.5 The dust lay thick on the floor of the mine. Sometimes when a shot was fired the dust rose in great clouds. When a miner was shovelling it, the dust would billow up and be carried off by the current of air. The dust was also in the roof and in the stopings, put there intentionally to fill up the spaces and prevent the accumulation of methane gas."

Gold and platinum group metals (PGM) do not dissolve in sulfate electrolyte from anode during electro-refining of primary copper. The PGM form solid ‘slimes’ which accumulates at bottom of the electrolytic cell. Typically, 8 to 10 ppm silver is present in copper cathodes, which is equivalent to almost 2% of silver loss during electro-refining. The silver can be cemented with cathode copper as soon as it is dissolved into the electrolyte from anode or during entrapment of slime particles in cathode. Over a period of time, the concentrates grade has deteriorated and change in type & amount of impurities in concentrate has resulted in higher silver loss during refining process. Therefore, an in-depth investigation was carried out in both fire- and electro-refining processes to understand the root causes of higher silver loss in copper cathodes. The detailed characterization and the plant data analysis were carried out. The results of study revealed that higher silver loss in 3rd crop cathodes as compared to 1st and 2nd crop cathodes from same anode. In anode silver was present in two forms, dissolved in copper (solid solution) and in slime phases such as Cu2-xAgxSeTe. SEM-EDX study of anode cross section confirmed higher silver and oxygen content in central region (core) of anode as compared that in both air and mold sides. This is due to non-uniform cooling of anode which was confirmed by the solidification modeling. Higher concentration of oxygen & silver at core of anode rised Ag+ concentration in electrolyte and slime particles during 3rd crop. The results of study were used to optimize the anode cooling process and also electrolyte chemistry to reduce the silver loss. The details of study carried out are discussed in this paper using the results of modeling, characterization and experimental studies. INTRODUCTION In the electrolytic refining of copper, fire refined copper anodes are used as raw material. Anodes contains copper of the range 99.5 to 99.6%, rest being the impurities. Hence, the purpose of the refining is (1) to remove the impurities so that final cathode conforms to the LME specifications and also (2) to recover the precious metal from the anode copper. When anode is dissolved, most of the impurities reports to the anode slime settled at the bottom of the cell, and rest dissolves in the electrolyte. Dissolved impurities remains in electrolyte and are removed during electrolyte recycling. However, sometime dissolved impurities and slime particles get entrapped in cathode due to disturbances in operational conditions. Metals dissolving in the electrolyte are the elements such as Ni, Co, Fe, Zn. The electrode potential of As, Sb and Bi being close to that of copper, these elements partly dissolve in the electrolyte. Noble metals like Ag, Au, Pt and Pd are generally insoluble and are thus expected to report to the anode slime. A small amount of the sliver content from the anode is dissolved in the electrolyte. Because the dissolved silver electroplates on the cathode at a smaller applied potential than copper, the cathode typically contains up to 8 ppm of silver. This is referred to as ‘silver loss’ in cathode (Cooper, 1987). Fortunately, silver is a rather benign impurity in copper due to its electrical conductivity being higher than copper. However, higher silver loss in cathode is loss of revenue for Copper smelter due to significant difference in their LME price.

"In mines employing cut-and-fill stoping (sand fill), ore passes are built as mining progresses upward. These ore pass raises are generally made from timber and form a vertical ""chimney"", like a very tall log cabin. Traditionally the chimney, or raise, is square in shape and is constructed from square timbers with stepped ends as shown in Figure I. The timbered raise is thus surrounded by sandfill on its outside, leaving the centre open for passing ore down through it. Each layer consists of four timbers and rests flush on the layer below. The corners are frequently pinned or spiked.Under certain conditions in sandfilled stopes large horizontal loads may be transmined to the raise cribbing timbers, or the ""chimney's"" walls. In deep mines, where rock bursts are a problem, it can be shown that one of the conditions for rockbursts to occur is that the burst zone be stiffer and weaker than the surrounding rock(l). This allows a strain energy build-Up in the rock surrounding the burst zone, and the rate of release of this strain energy is known to be related directly to the over-all strength and stiffness of the rock in the burst zone. In stopes that are sandfilled, attempts are, therefore, usually made to increase the strength of the sandfill by the addition of large-sized waste rock and Portland cement. These measures usually achieve the desired strength of the sandfill and, consequently, the severity and frequency of rockbursts can be reduced.Problems may arise when the now chunky sandfill transmits high loads to the raise cribbing along with relatively large move- merits. This leads to heavily stressed and strained cribbing timbers the Coeur d'Alene district in Idaho, raise cribbing failures are common. A typical mode of cribbing failure is shown in Figure 2. One learns in statics that a structure shaped like the crib in Figure I is inherently unstable , at least from a structural standpoint. The crib has pivoted, in Figure 2, into a rhombi c shape and supports very little load. Soon the four-foot square raise cribbing made from 5 in. by 5 in. timbers will no longer pass ore."

"The toxicity of arsenic is well known and documented; however, the presence of arsenic in copper electrorefining anodes and electrolytes is critically necessary to produce high-quality cathode. Arsenic as well as antimony and bismuth concentrations vary relative to their concentration in the anode copper received from the smelter. The behaviour and benefits of arsenic in copper electrorefining and the detrimental effects of antimony and bismuth on cathode quality and tankhouse performance are discussed. This will include the minimization and mitigation of problems associated with arsenic, antimony, and bismuth—including cathode contamination, floating slimes, scaling, and anode passivation.RÉSUMÉ La toxicité de l’arsenic est bien connue et documentée; toutefois, la présence d’arsenic dans les anodes de l’électroaffinage du cuivre et dans les électrolytes est d’une nécessité critique pour produire une cathode de grande qualité. Les concentrations en arsenic, ainsi qu’en antimoine et en bismuth varient selon leur concentration dans l’anode de cuivre reçue de la fonderie. "This paper provides a description of the Highmont copper-molybdenum concentrator from primary crushing through grinding, flotation, tailings disposal and water reclamation. The unique features of the operation will be emphasized.IntroductionThe Highmont property is located in the southern portion of the Highland Valley adjacent to and east of Lornex and about 4 miles south of Bethlehem Copper. The plantsite is at an elevation of 5100 ft.Highmont acquired the property in 1966 and in 1969 Teck Corporation entered into an exploration agreement which contained the option to finance the property to production . A detailed feasibility study of the project was completed in 1971. A positive production decision was deferred at that time because of the prevailing soft copper market and relatively low molybdenum price. The development of a strong molybdenum market in late 1978 and early 1979 led to a re-examination of project economics, and a decision to proceed to production was made in April 1979.The Highmont ore zones occur adjacent to and on either side of an east-west-trending quartz porphyry dyke. The two major zones , the east and west pits, contain 122 million tons of ore assaying 0.27070 Cu and 0.029% Mo. Chalcopyrite, bornite and molybdenite are the minerals of economic interest. Chalcopyrite is the predominant copper mineral. Mineralization occurs primarily along fractures and is zoned according to fracture density. Some pyrite is present, but for the most part it is outside the ore zone. Surface oxidation is shallow throughout the orebody.Wright Engineers Limited were responsible for the major part of the engineering design. Site construction, which began in the spring of 1979, is under the direction of Commonwealth Construction. The first concentrator line is scheduled for completion late in 1980, the other for early in 1981."

"A general review of the wear problems encountered in the mining industry is presented and current practice for wear protection systems is reviewed.A new concept in wear protection is described and compared to alternative systems. Utilization of conventional stud welding technology and abrasion-resistant wear studs is shown to be a useful supplement or substitution for conventional techniques. Operating life of many consumable components can be increased by up to four fold. The technique is highly portable for on-site field application or can be used in shop environments.Details of the wear protection model and metallurgical properties of the wear component are also reviewed. Laboratory wear test data are reported to supplement field test performance or to screen potential alloy compositions for application in specific environments.A Review of Wear Problems and Wear ProtectionThe emphasis on wear protection has increased in recent years because of the increasing impact of the potential savings in time, materials and energy. A 1974 German study concluded that attention to tribology, the study of friction and wear, could save approximately $3 billion, and a study in the U.S.A. at the same time put the figure at $100 billion of which $20 billion was for materials. A more recent American study put the energy component of the potential savings at $16.2 billion per year. A recent British study estimated the total potential savings in the U.K. as $1 billion per year, with the largest savings coming from lower maintenance and replacement costs ($500 million), lower breakdown costs ($250 million) and increased machinery life ($200 million). These three major contributions are all potentially accessible in the mining industry."

Hydraulic stimulation of deep reservoirs is an essential procedure for developing engineered/enhanced geothermal systems (EGS), but also in other Geo-energy contexts. The goal is enhancing permeability to such a degree that fluid flow rates within the reservoir are sufficiently high for an economically productive reservoir. Two fracture stimulation mechanisms are distinguished that may occur concurrently during the hydraulic treatment: 1) During hydro-fracturing (HF) new tensile fractures are propagated from the borehole by means of a fluid pressure overcoming the minimal principle stress d3 plus the tensile strength T0 of intact rock. In case of a pre-existing fracture oriented normal to d 3 , the fracture can be opened by exceeding d 3 only. Fluid injection is performed via small packed intervals for creating a stack of hydraulic fractures. 2) During hydro-shearing (HS), over-pressure induces slip along pre-existing fractures that are favourably oriented in the stress field for reactivation in shear. Such stimulation is usually performed in a large packed interval or in an open borehole. Which mechanism occurs predominantly during stimulation depends on the rock mass structure and in-situ stress field, but also on the orientation of discontinuities intersecting the open-hole section and thus being pressurized. Both mechanisms also differ in how they affect fracture permeability. While permeability gained by HS is mostly irreversible due to rearrangement of asperity contacts accompanied with shear dilation, permeability enhanced during HF reduces nearly reversible after pressurization unless proppant is used to ensure permanent apertures. In this contribution, we critically discuss the pros and cons of both mechanisms regarding efficiency of enhancing permeability and the associated hazard of induced earthquakes based on literature review and numerical modelling. We review literature that reports on how much permeability required for productive EGS reservoirs and how much permanent permeability can be gained by stimulation. We also compile information regarding the degree of seismicity induced during HFor HS-dominated stimulation procedures, together with conceptual studies that reveal characteristics of seismicity associated with the two mechanisms. Many observations and models indicate that HF may have a higher tendency of being aseismic, while felt seismic events are usually associated with HS. Further, we present a hydro-mechanically coupled fracture flow model that investigates, if and to what degree the stimulation strategy can be designed such that one of the two mechanisms is evoked and dominates over the other. It shows that HS may dominate in presence of larger persistent fractures nearly optimallyoriented in the stress field, even if HF is attempted in short packed intervals. The model further demonstrates that stress transfer during HS promotes the development of permeability across an anisotropic layer of the stimulated rock instead of a large volume. Hence, the study sheds light onto the feasibility of creating productive EGS reservoirs in crystalline rock at several kilometres depths.

Empirical relations exist for the estimation of rock block strength at scales larger than standard core sizes. Two recently published relations account for the significant impact that microflaws (pores, open cracks, veins) and weathering/alteration can have on scale effect. These relations were used to estimate the rock block strength of heavily microfractured quartzite from the Bingham Canyon Mine. Predictions were compared to the results of Uniaxial Compressive Strength (UCS) tests conducted on cylindrical core samples of varying microfracture intensity and diameter. The comparison confirms the sensitivity to microfracturing suggested by existing relations and suggests that they would benefit from more detailed consideration of microfracture strength, density and persistence over a range of scales. The results of a numerical study illustrate how Synthetic Rock Mass (SRM) modeling techniques could be used to complement empirical data in the development of such relations.

Information on the elements contained in E-Waste is important from the viewpoint of recycling. We analyzed several components of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) collected from citizens. The distributions of the minor metals in WEEE were determined with elemental mapping and chemical analyses. The annual change in elemental composition was investigated by analyzing equipment manufactured in different years. The information will be of use for separation techniques required for future advanced recycling.

Buried in this mass of documentation is a discussion paper entitled ""The Corporate Income Tax System-A Direction For Change"". When the discussion paper was tabled over one year ago, reaction from the business sector was almost nonexistent. By and large, the paper was regarded as nothing more than one more federal publication of mild academic interest.But, recent events suggest that this discussion paper for corporate tax reform could be the cornerstone for a series of changes to the tax laws which would have more profound and widespread effects for all sectors of the economy than any reform since 1971 . No industry in Canada can afford to ignore the movement afoot in Ottawa for corporate tax reform."

"Most mine managers in Canada today will agree that one of the keys to mining efficiency and productivity is their human resources. A5 a result, many mines develop some sort of incentive designed to tap their employees' capabilities to the fullest extent. Historically, the most common plans used have been ""piece-rate"" plans, where individual or small groups of miners are paid a financial bonus based on some measure of their productivity. Recently, however, incentive plans that take a more team-based approach have been developed in some Canadian mines. One such plan will be defined in this paper, and its popularity in the industry today discussed.Gainsharing PlansThere are two primary components to a gainsharing plan. The first is a cash incentive, which is paid to all employees and based on factors that are highly correlated with employee productivity, and key to the profitability of the mine. For example, the typical gainsharing cash incentive is based on the cost/unit of metal produced. Management (in consultation with employees in some cases) will establish the budgeted cost per tonne, and any savings in this amount is shared between the company and the employees. The second is a management philosophy and associated communication network, which is designed to foster an environment that encourages information exchanges, communication, participation, and trust between employees and management. The typical gainsharing communication network consists of two tiers of committees. The first, operational committees, include all employees working in the same department or departments which frequently interact. The employees meet monthly with management personnel to discuss problems encountered and brainstorm for solutions. In most cases, these committees will nominate a person in the group to structure the meeting to maximize its efficiency. The second, the screening committee, is a single group consisting of representatives from the various operational groups, whose primary job is to ensure that the plan is effective, and the objectives and results generated by the plan remain consistent with the mine objectives. In short, gainsharing plans tell employees that their bonus depends upon performance and then gives them the opportunity and incentive to affect that performance. The opportunity is provided by a communication network and positive management practices, and the incentive comes in the form of ""intrinsic"" rewards of participation and the ""extrinsic"" rewards of the bonus payments. "A recent pilot-plant program carried out at Rio Algom's Quirke uranium mine at Elliot Lake, Ontario is described. The goal of the research was the production of tailings basin effluents which were low in total radium-226. The process tested involved precipitation of radium with barium chloride and sedimentation in plastic-lined settling ponds. Adjustment of the tailings basin overflow from its normal value of pH 9.5 by addition of sulphuric acid to about pH 7.5 was found to give approximately a five-fold improvement in total radium-226 removal. A five-month demonstration test resulted in an effluent with a mean total radium-226 activity of44 pCi/L after 2.5 days settling time and 29 pCi/L after 5 days. The results from the demonstration program are used to propose a schedule of achievable total radium-226 activities where precipitation and sedimentation are employed. The maximum suggested values for 5 days nominal settling time are: 30 pCi/L in an annual mean, 45 pCi/L in a monthly mean. 60pCiIL in a weekly mean and 80 pCi/L in any single grab sample.IntroductionRadium-226 has been removed from effluents at the Elliot Lake uranium mines since the introduction of the first barium chloride treatment system in 1965. Current practice, which has changed little over the years, consists of radium-barium sulphate precipitation by the addition of a low do se of barium chloride to the clear overflow from the tailings basin(l·2l. Provision is made for the precipitate to settle in large natural or constructed ponds and lagoons. The residence time in these ponds, which depends on the site, ranges from 3 to 35 days, with varying degrees of efficiency being achieved."
