Paste backfill as a means of supporting underground mining is gaining popularity. Despite this trend, engineering and design of mine paste backfill systems are still largely based on empirical methods rather than established scientific principles. Because of a lack of sound understanding of mineral paste flow, some degree of trial and error is often involved during commissioning and operating of new paste fill systems. New operations often have to be built with flexibilities and contingencies, escalating the overall project costs. This paper reviews the applicability of some scientific and engineering principles to mineral paste flows. Recent experimental data are used to illustrate important points. The phenomenon of mineral paste flow is examined under the context of improving the efficiency and reliability of underground delivery. Gaps in our understanding of mineral paste rheology are pointed out and from those some future research directions naturally emerge. Status and problems of the current engineering and design practice are also briefly discussed.

In the townships of Genoa and Marion, Subdury Mining Division, Ontario, there is a group of twenty-three mining claims known as the Jefferson claims. They are controlled by the Jefferson Mining Corporation and they were staked in 1908 by W. E. Smith, formerly of Sudbury, Ontario, and now of Smith & Reitz, a law firm of Minneapolis, Minnesota. These claims were staked for iron ore and in 1910 about 4000 feet of diamond-drilling was done on them. During the drilling operations galena and sphalerite ~were found in the iron formation in cores from holes, Nos. 2 and 3, claim W. D. 717, Genoa township. This discovery lead to a search for galena and sphalerite in the vicinity and a streak of rock containing these minerals was found in the iron formation a short distance to the east of. the drill holes. A shaft was sunk on this outcrop in 1912 to a depth of 8 feet and bottomed in an attractive lens of galena. Stripping revealed other small exposures of galena and sphalerite in the iron formation.

In today's modem copper electro-refineries, increasingly higher average current densities are being employed. With these increases many refineries are approaching their limiting current density. The nearness of the average operating current density to the limiting current density has placed increasing emphasis on the need to maintain an even current distribution. This paper explores the importance of maintaining even current density and discusses the factors, processes and practices that are necessary to achieve and maintain high quality production at high operational intensity.

It excludes Vancouver Island and the Queen Charlotte Islands, which are discussed in a background paper on the Pacific Continental Shelf. The region is bounded on the south by the northwestern United States, on the west by the continental shelf and Alaska, on the north by the front of the Ogilvie Mountains, on the northeast by the axis of the MacKenzie Mountains and on the east by the Rocky Mountain Trench.The region is dominated by two mountain chains that con tain icefields and glaciers: the St. Elias, Coast and Cascade Mountains in the west; the Selwyn, Pelly, Cassiar, Omineca and Columbia Mountains in the east. The Intermontane region between these mountain chains consists of lower mountains and plateaus. In the mountains, the region above the timberline and many of the steep valley-walls provide good exposures of rock, but these areas are subject to rockslides and landslides and in winter to snow avalanches. Much of the Western Cordillera was covered by ice-sheets at various times during the Pleistocene epoch. Consequently, the larger valleys in the mountains and much of the Intermontane region contain much glacial drift and alluvium and only limited exposures of rock. This same terrain in the Southern Cordillera, however, is the most favourable for agriculture. Parts of the region, particularly in the two mountain chains, are heavily forested. Elsewhere, the forest cover is less, with grassland prevailing in the south and tundra in the north."

"ForewordTHE Arctic Archipelago and northern Greenland contain an orogenic region that is as much as 300 miles wide and over 1,400 miles long. It occupies much of what was formerly classified with the Arctic Plains and grouped with other plains and lowlands of Canada as one main geological division. It is proposed that this folded region be designated the Innuitian Region and be recognized as one of the main geological divisions of Canada.Canada's main geological divisions (see Geological Survey of Canada, 1947) have been considered as consisting of a central shield, largely surrounded by plains that separate it from eastern and western mountains. The plains include the Interior Plains, the St. Lawrence Lowlands, the Arctic Plains or Low-lands, and the Hudson Bay Lowland, which is in the central part of the Shield. Plains and mountains are, strictly speaking, physiographic terms, but because mountains are generally folded regions and plains are generally made of undisturbed strata, such terms are useful vehicles to express the fundamental make-up of the land. Nevertheless, it is preferable to use the terms Appalachian and Cordilleran 'Regions' rather than 'Mountains', as those geological divisions are not exclusively made of mountains.Because of the lack of more definite information, the 'Arctic Plains' have included, in the past, regions with plateaux two to four thousand feet above the nearby sea, mountain ranges reaching approximately 10,000 feet above sea level, and regions of folded strata."

"The future of the uranium industry in Canada during the next twenty years will be very dependent on political and social issues on a world scale. Technology, as such, will tend to be of lesser importance. Nonetheless, some technical changes can be anticipated.This paper deals with milling of uranium ore, leaving further processing and nuclear power production to specialists in these fields. An attempt has been made to look at uranium production technology in Canada in relation to that in other countries, and to draw interference regarding future changes that seem probable in the Canadian context. In particular, recent advances in mill equipment are considered.The chemistry of uranium and its relatively low concentration in most ores has been responsible for a completely hydrometallurgical approach to mill processing, and this should continue. In spite of little commercial success to date, pre-concentration of lower grade ores will be researched further in order that these ores can compete with higher grade deposits in Canada.The discovery of the relatively high-grade ores of the Athabasksa region will undoubtedly influence choice of mill processes and equipment. The potential effect on innovations is discussed"

Among all spraying processes, cold spraying has attracted a special attention in recent years, both as a coating - and more recently - as a rapid manufacturing technique. The interest in this process is mainly because of the fact that the deposition of spray material takes place at moderately low temperatures, and thus, oxidation and unfavourable microstructural changes can be alleviated. In this process, a highly compressed gas, flowing through a de Laval nozzle, accelerates the particles of the spray powder to high velocities of up to 1200 m/s. Although there is no melting of particles prior to impact on the substrate, cold-sprayed deposits can be denser and more tightly bonded as compared to the equivalent deposits produced by conventional thermal spraying methods. The present contribution focuses on this unique aspect of cold spraying. Modelling of particle impact, combined with various experimental observations, is employed to illustrate that bonding of particles and hence material deposition occurs through shear instability - associated with severe plastic deformation and localized heat generation - at the interacting surfaces of particles and substrate. The results of modelling also provide an insight to the influence of material and process parameters on the critical velocity and on the microstructural properties of cold-sprayed deposits.

Three dimensional (3D) seismic exploration has been carried out since the 1980s in the mining district of China, where it has been playing an indispensable role in the high yield and efficiency of coal mining. Unlike oil exploration, this technique uses high density seismic acquisition technology. In recent years, it has focused on wide azimuth 3D seismic acquisition. Evaluation of geometry moved away from depending on folds, azimuth and offset, toward being based upon a focus-ray beam. Conventionally, coalfield 3D seismic interpretation focused on time domain and was based on kinematics information, which is only suitable for less complex geological conditions. To achieve high-resolution processing for the complex topography and structure in coalfields, data processing shifted from poststack to prestack. The means to improve the accuracy of interpretation for complex geological conditions are 1) integration of multiple attributes and multiple disciplines, 2) combination of seismic and geological data, and 3) comprehensive combination of time domain and depth domain data. With the demand for lithological exploration, high-resolution data processing must also take into account the requirements of preserving amplitude in seismic data. Seismic attributes technology, seismic inversion technology, and dynamic tracking interpretation are key techniques in 3D seismic exploration. They greatly improve interpretation accuracy, produce better results in the goaf space description of the coal-bearing strata and coal seam structure, and effectively reduce exploration costs under complicated geological conditions. Therefore, these techniques will be the primary means employed in the future to deal with coalfield complex structure and lithological exploration.

At the present time of depletion of reserves of high grade rare earth deposits, it has become necessary to involve low grade raw materials in the production. Among the rare-earth deposits in Kazakhstan, the most advanced one is Kundybai. The mineralogical composition of ore is represented by the minerals: a-quartz SiO2, kaolinite Al2(Si2O5)(OH)4, muscovite KAl2(AlSi3)O10(OH, F)2, albite Na(AlSi3O8), rutile TiO2, and hematite Fe2O3. It contains: 59.1–68.5% SiO2, 19.1–28.4% Al2O3, 7.2–10.3% Fe2O3, 0.51–0.84% TiO2, 0.10–2.32% CaO, 0.39–2.10% MgO, and some other elements. Rare earths are located in the clay part (kaolinite, goethite) in the ion-adsorbing form, and they are represented by the main ore mineral churchite - YPO4·2H2O. In the ore the amount of rare-earth elements (total REEs) varies from 210 to 600 ppm. Elements of the cerium group predominate (La, Nd, Ce, Sm, Pr) and the yttrium group is represented by Y, Gd and Dy. Extremely thin intergrowth and accumulation of REEs in clay minerals cause difficulties in their recovery using flotation and gravitation beneficiating methods. The purpose of this work is the development of an extraction method for the main mineral components of ore with transfer of the total REEs into the solution with high extractive efficiency. Results of the experimental work into high-temperature processing (hereinafter referred to as sulphatization) of ore by sulphuric acid with subsequent dual-mode water leaching of the sulphate product (sinter) are presented in this manuscript. The influence on the ore sulphatization process of some physical and chemical parameters: liquid-to-solid (L/S) ratio (0.36–0.86 cm3/g), temperature (100 – 500°?), concentration of sulphuric acid (3.0–18.62 mol/L) and duration (0.5–2.5 h) was studied. Optimal technological parameters of the process were determined to be: L/S ratio 0.36–0.46 cm3/g; temperature 500°?; concentration of H2SO4 9.0 mol/L; soaking time 1.5 h. Under these conditions it is possible to obtain extractions of ~ 85% REE, as well as 58% aluminium and 10% iron. XRD and IR-spectroscopy analyses were used to determine the material constitution of sulphated cakes obtained under optimal conditions. It was found that the primary minerals are quartz and muscovite; however different sodium aluminium silicates and albite minerals are present as well. In the future, it is proposed that the leach residue cakes are processed into precipitated silica (“white soot”).

Les LMSM-CANMET sont à réaliser une étude dont les résultats serviront à estimer l?influence de certaines technologies et systèmes de contrôle visant des économies d?énergie et à évaluer l?impact des unes sur les autres. En outre, un modèle de simulation est en cours de création afin d?évaluer les gains incrémentaux liés à l?application d?une série d?innovations dans une exploitation minière. La présentation fera le point sur l'état d'avancement du projet en plus de soumettre quelques exemples.

Abstract- The process of arriving at the size and grade of: (a) a newly-discovered body of mineralization, (b) a potential ore resource, (c) an orebody proposed for mining, or (d) the ore reserves in a mine, requires fundamental geological, and geometrical determinations as well as physical and chemical analyses. This paper outlines geological and geometrical features considered critical, in the authors' experience, in realistic reserve determination. These are discussed under the headings "The Four Cs". They include the Character, type or nature of the mineralization; the Continuity of various types of mineralization in the deposit; various key concerns in the Calculation besides the mathematics; and the Classification section which refers to basic considerations in classifying a mineral estimate. It is suggested that the responsibility for the calculation of a Resource or Reserve should be that of a geologist experienced in the ore type under review. Further, it should be the responsibility of the board of directors of the company owning the deposit to ensure that a sufficiently experienced person is chosen to carry out the process.

For its Zuuvch Ovoo uranium deposit in Mongolia, Badrakh Energy (partly owned by Orano Mining) is working on the prefeasibility study for exploitation by ISR (in situ recovery). As part of this project, Orano built a 2-cell (each cell is constituted of one producer well located in the center and surrounded by six injection wells in an hexagonal pattern) and a processing pilot plant that will be used to demonstrate the operability and economic viability of an ISR process. Another main objective of this pilot trial is to demonstrate the ability of Orano’s modeling tools to predict the ore behavior under given leaching conditions. To model uranium production by ISR, Orano uses HYTEC, a reactive transport computational software, which was adapted for its existing operation in Kazakhstan (Katco) to predict uranium recovery and reagent usage based on operating conditions. In order to perform similar simulations for this new deposit, Orano engaged in a comprehensive program including ore sampling, detailed characterization, and metallurgical testwork. The mineralogical conclusions were used to prepare a simplified geochemistry for the ore, in particular carbonate and reactive clay grades, uranium mineralization and penalizing elements such as pyrite. Then, bottle roll leach tests were used to characterize dissolution kinetics for smectite clays. Eventually, column leach test results such as pH, free acid, and uranium recovery were modeled on HYTEC to improve the fit of some of the dissolution kinetic parameters. Parameters fitted using metallurgical test work results will now be used as inputs for predictive model at the pilot scale, in order to anticipate operational results and help with operating decisions for production ramp up.

DURING the past year the Cadillac-Malanie area in northwestern Quebec has been catapulted to the front as one of Canada's most active gold mining districts. Late in 1934 the area was lolling along in the doldrums, with one producing mine and a handful of active prospects. 1935 passed with only slightly increased activity, but saw the start of production at Canadian Malartic mine. Lightning struck in April, 1936, when a new and phenomenally rich ore-body was found in O'Brien Gold mine, and by midsummer the camp was ablaze with activity. An important new discovery on the Pan-Canadian property, and pleasing underground developments at Sladen Malarric, East Malartic, and Lapa Cadillac, in addition to other new developments, lent fodder to the flame, and at present several dozen properties are being actively developed. For the past three seasons, the Geological Survey of Canada has been engaged in a fairly detailed study of the geology and mineral deposits across Cadillac, Malarric, and Fourniere townships. Ir is the purpose of this paper to present a brief preliminary statement of the structural and economic geology and to discuss some of the more important problems that have been found to exist. The reader is requested to remember that the paper is a preliminary one and that therefore the conclusions presented are open to revision. It is impossible to make full acknowledgment for help received, for the writers are indebted to practically every operator and prospector in the area for generous co-operation in the work, and to several private, provincial, and federal geologists for data and frank discussion of problems encountered. Over a score of student assistants from McGill, Queen's, and Toronto have given excellent service. Published reports by Wilson, Cooke, James, Mawdsley, L. V. Bell, and J. J. "A mine shaft is one main development method of establishing access in an underground mine. The construction technology of the mine shaft sinking is complicated and large equipment setup on surface and in the mine shaft. The paper briefly reviews a single-line operation method, parallel operation method and mixed operation method as well as the features of the one operation method with the excavation, lining and installation. The special construction technology mainly would include ground freezing methods, full diameter shaft drilling methods, caisson methods, grouting technology and concrete curtain methods as well as other methods. The paper summarizes the shaft sinking numbers and effects by the special construction methods during different periods. The paper states the shaft sinking conditions and the each created record conditions in the coal, metallurgy, non-ferrous metal, hydropower, highway, railway, nonmetallic and other industries. The paper has a prediction on the shaft sinking requirements and development tendency in the future for China.INTRODUCTIONA mine shaft is one main development method of access in an underground mine. In recent years in China the new shaft mines represent 45% of the total number of new mines. With the development of new mining area under construction and the development of deeper mines, the ratio of the mine shaft as access for underground mines will increase. The construction technology of the mine shaft engineering will be complicated, the operation site footprint will be small and the working environment will be more difficult. The mine shaft sinking operation will often be varied by the geological conditions and affected by underground water inflows, seam gas outbursts, geothermal and other natural conditions. The safe construction of the mine shaft sinking will be challenged by all these conditions. Although the mine shaft engineering will only be about 5% of the total mine roadway engineering, the mine shaft construction period often will take over 40% of the total mine construction period. With the progress of modernized mine production technology and the construction of a high production and high efficient mine, the mine transportation roadways mostly would be set in the seam and the engineered amount of the mine rock roadways reduced year by year could cause more prominent long extensions of the mine shaft construction period. Therefore, in order to speed up the construction, to shorten the mine construction period and to realize the investment benefits as early as possible, the technical level of the mine shaft sinking should firstly be improved and the construction speed of the mine shaft engineering and sinking should be speeded up, which would have important significant benefits."

"Gamma-ray spectral logging, a useful technique for uranium exploration and evaluation, has generally been underutilized by the Canadian mining industry. Provided that the technique is properly applied, it is capable of yielding reliable quantitative information regarding the distribution of uranium and other radioelements along the borehole under most conditions.In practice. there are numerous factors which potentially can degrade the quality of the log and thus any quantitative interpretation based on it. Fortunately, the appropriate choice of logging equipment and technique can avoid many such problems, and corrections can be applied to the data to compensate for most of the others."
