This paper describes studies of zinc concentrate oxidizing pressure leaching using the method of mathematical modeling. The concept of a kinetic function was taken as a basis for mathematical modeling of the leaching process. The kinetic function describes dependence of the unreacted component share OJ on the relative time x (the relative time is the ratio of the test duration and the time of complete dissolution). This kinetic function is determined in accordance with the results of batch laboratory tests. The laboratory tests have been carried out on zinc concentrate produced from Kazakhstan zinc-copper ores. Zinc concentrate consisted mainly of three types of minerals: sphalerite (70%), pyrite (13%) and chalcopyrite (10%). Oxidation reactions of sphalerite, pyrite and chalcopyrite have been considered as principal ones. The kinetic characteristics of the process (kinetic function, reaction order, activation energy, duration of complete dissolution of the concentrate components) have been calculated in the course of laboratory tests. The mathematical model was used for estimation of the main technological leaching process parameters (such as process rate, degree of metals extraction, autoclave capacity, heat balance, etc.). Mathematical modeling based on the kinetic function concept allows safe designing of metallurgical equipment and scaling the technology to industrial capacity.

MR.]. G. TRAILL: My only excuse for contributing to the discussion on Mr. Hall's interesting paper is that I had the good fortune to be employed at Noranda during those romantic years, 1927 and 1928, when construction was at its height. The mine was in course of being rapidly prepared and brought into production, and the initial difficulties in crushing-plant and smelter were being met and overcome. They were stirring days, and perhaps those members who were with the second Empire Mining and Metallurgical Congress in 1927 sensed the atmosphere of excitement and activity that prevailed. Early History. Noranda must surely possess some of the most remarkable ore-bodies known to mining men, and the story of their development is pure romance. Ed. Horne's faith in the property, and the persistence of Thomson and Chadbourne, were richly rewarded in the end, but only after some very thin times had been experienced. In those early days access to the district was by the Kenojevis river and various portages to Osisko lake, on the shores of which the mine and smelter and the town of Noranda now stand. But all the early work was done on the Chadbourne claims, more than a mile to the west; through the b~sh. I have read a log of the events of that period, and through the whole tale of hard work, discouraging developments, occasional shortages of food, and constant danger from forest fires, can be read the faith and persistence of the men in charge. The Chadbourne ore was of that well-known type which, though just too low-grade to pay (with gold at $20 per ounce), is yet sufficiently encouraging to lead one on in the hope of striking something better. It was only as a last resort that work on the Chadbourne claims was suspended and a diamond drill brought to the gossan-covered hill beside the lake. The diamond-driller told me his version (it may be exaggerated) of how the position and direction of the first hole were decided on. He was told, "You might as well set up your drill here, and drill in, say, that direction". I believe that the first hole went through the richest ore ever found at Noranda. After the drill had gone through about 150 feet of solid sulphide ore running 17 per cent copper and 4 dwt. of gold per ton, it passed into barren rock, but the diamond-driller expressed the opinion (I wonder how he knew)) that the hole would come into ore again before long.

Mining and mineral processing plants collect and manage more data than a small city with much in real-time. The data is changing rapidly as internal and external conditions evolve. As corporations buy and sell assets, and reengineer their staff, the structure and tools that were used to understand this data is lost. This results in significant deterioration in the ability to maintain a smart operation. When data is recognized as a critical asset and managed as part of an infrastructure, it become a key enabler to help transform the entire operations. In many situations, all partners in business collaboration—such as join ventures, contract manufacturer, expert service providers, and operations and maintenance companies—need access to production and asset data. The emergence and maturation of Cloud technologies make it possible to easily connect the plants to external equipment suppliers and operational support service.This paper will share examples of how mineral processors have adopted new data strategies such as self-service business intelligence, cloud computing and internal/external collaboration.INTRODUCTIONOne of the main challenges in mineral and metallurgical processing plants is effective energy and water management. The lowering of ore grades requires higher throughputs while the ores are getting more complex with variable mineralogical compositions. Electrical energy supply is becoming a restriction in many countries. Rising water management costs has a direct impact on the profitability of the operations. Grade recovery versus energy consumption in copper production for both open pit and underground mines has been described by Fuerstenau (2001). Comminution uses over 55% of the energy to produce nonferrous metals while other operations require much less energy (Nelson, Richins, & Lelinski, 2013)."

Lost time and services caused by electrical equipment breakdown or cable faults can often be substantially reduced by the use of direct-current high-voltage testing as a maintenance tool. This paper discusses the relative merits of alternating-current versus direct-current testing, pointing out the advantages in size and cost of equipment and more definitive results achieved through the use of D.C. General principles of direct-current high-volt-age testing, types of testing, methods of performing the actual test and interpreting the results are explained. ?The value of insulation resistance measurements and their relationship to high-voltage testing is discussed. Pinpointing the physical location of a cable defect using a fault locator or thumper is described. Reference is made to several organizations that have effected considerable savings with high-voltage test programs. "The Polymetallic Twin Metals Project deposits in Northern Minnesota are being developed by Twin Metals Minnesota. Amongst the flowsheet alternatives being examined at a prefeasibility study level is one involving flotation of a bulk concentrate followed by high temperature autoclaving of the concentrate using the PlatsolTM Process to solubilize all the valuable metals in the concentrate (Cu, Ni, Pt, Pd and Au). Autoclave operating conditions have been established in which recoveries of all the pay metals are in the 92 to 99% range, and the autoclave residence time has been reduced to an hour. The stability of the precious metals in solution after autoclaving has been assessed, as well as the impact of internally recycling process liquors to the feed to the autoclave.INTRODUCTIONPlatinum group metals (PGMs; platinum, palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium and osmium) are traditionally recovered from their ores by production of a high-grade concentrate by flotation and/or gravity concentration followed by smelting of the concentrate. Concentrates are smelted to remove nonsulphide minerals and converted to remove iron and sulphur. The resulting high PGM grade matte is processed hydrometallurgically to leach the base metals, leaving a residue with a very high grade (20-40%) PGM concentrate for final refining to individual PGMs. Due to the complexity of this process and its high capital cost, this process can only be applied economically to high grade PGM ores. Lower grade PGM concentrates might be accepted as copper and nickel concentrates but may not yield attractive payment terms for the PGMs. The mineralized Duluth Gabbro region of Minnesota hosts several low grade base and PGM deposits and Twin Metals Minnesota is working to develop the Twin Metals Project deposits. Earlier studies at both pre-feasibility and feasibility level, by other mining companies, have failed to yield an economically viable project based on the traditional process. It is possible to produce a saleable copper concentrate from these ores, but economic recovery of nickel and PGMs into saleable concentrates proved elusive.In the late 1990’s and early 2000’s the Platsol™ process was developed at SGS in Lakefield, Ontario (at the time Lakefield Research Limited) for the NorthMet deposit (also within the Duluth Gabbro) owned by PolyMet Mining. The process developed was a high temperature chloride-assisted pressure oxidation process capable of dissolving simultaneously the base metals (Cu, Ni, Co, Zn), gold and the PGMs."

"In washability, the objective is to establish the set of maximum possible separation performance criteria for a given mineral feed. The method of choice for this has been the conventional sink-float analysis. Time, cost and safety aspects of the sink-float method have prompted the search for a new approach for establishing separation performance criteria, especially as performance levels of separator plants can be maximized if reliable information based on an analysis of washability in conjunction with particle size distribution, elemental constituency becomes readily available. The new method to establish washability and associated performance information utilizes at least two measurement technologies concurrently: single energy x-ray transmission and image processing. For porous or very inhomogeneous materials the results can be refined further by using dual energy x-ray transmission and image processing. The value of the collected data increases considerably if the washability data were additionally available in time to be considered in the control of the process plant. The incorporation of an automated washability monitor gives near real-time data that would impinge positively on the profitability of the plant operation. The method was extensively tested with a range of sample with different densities, varying from 1 g/cm³ (coal) to 5 g/cm³ (iron ore).INTRODUCTIONWashability of minerals like coal and iron ore is expressed by a curve or graph showing the results of a series of float-and-sink tests. Several of these curves are drawn to illustrate different conditions or variables, usually on the same axes, thus presenting the information on one sheet of paper. Washability curves are essential not only for the design but also for the operation of preparation plants.In determining the washability analysis, particle density is the underlying feature of all washability curves. Conventionally, the particles are separated into density fractions by immersing them in fluids of a predetermined density followed by skimming of those particles that stay afloat. The particles remaining afloat thus have a density lower than that of the fluid they were subjected to. The particles that remained at the bottom of the fluid container thus had a higher density higher than that of the fluid. By progressively increasing, for example, the density of the fluid and immersing the remaining particles so as to be able to skim the next density fraction, the particles would be fractionated into density groups. The liquids used range from aqueous solutions to organic liquids to suspensions. Unfortunately the liquids used for this separation process are often toxic and expensive. It stands to reason that a new method of determining washability is sought."

Natural hazards such as rock bumps, methane, coal dust explosions, airborne respirable dust, outbursts of gas and rocks, water, radiation caused by natural radioactive materials, spontaneous fires, and climatic hazards, occurring in the Polish hard coal mines, should be controlled. These hazards are characterized by different scale levels numbered from 2?5. To recognize the amount and levels of hazards, research works were carried out in 109 mining districts of mines belonging to Jastrzebska Spólka Weglowa, Katowicki Holding Weglowy and Kompania Weglowa. These are 86 % of all mines and could be regarded as representative of the majority of Polish mining. The hazards have been classified as regards the frequency of their occurrence as: commonly occurring ? with a frequency of 100 % (like airborne respirable dust and fire hazards), high occurrence frequency ? frequency from 60 to below 100 % (methane hazard ? 83.5 %, coal dust explosion hazard ? 92.0 %, and water hazard ? 99.1 %), medium occurrence frequency ? from 30 to below 60 % (rock-bump hazard ? 52.3 % and climatic hazards ? 51.4 %), and episodic occurrence frequency ? below 30 % (outburst of gas and rocks and radioactive hazards). The dynamics of effects of growth in hazard levels to their intolerable values is diverse. Some of them are passive in nature, which allows for longer observation of changes and appropriate early response (as for climatic and spontaneous fire hazards). However the majority of them take on the character of disasters, like methane or coal dust explosions and damage of the excavation structure ? as occurs after a rock-bump or rock outburst; and creation of an atmosphere unfit for breathing ? during open or spontaneous fires, or after gas outbursts containing methane. There are also latent hazards whose effects do not influence indeed a process of production; however they are detrimental to health when a worker is exposed for a long time to airborne respirable dust and radiation. For other types of hazards a level of danger may be only estimated. Since the systems monitoring allows a wider range of control, therefore, aside from rock-bump and methane hazards, there are monitored also fire hazards including measurements of other air parameters (velocity, pressure, humidity, temperature, O2, CO2 concentration). A few types of monitoring systems are used in Polish mines, like the monitoring systems for environmental parameters such as SMP-NT, SMP-NT/A, the telemetric systems CST-40, CST/A, including the computer-aided system for methanometry control officer SWµP, the computer-aided measuring systems KSP-1, KSP-2, KSP-2C, or the production and safety control system VENTURON. The underground part of the systems monitoring of natural hazards contains measuring devices and equipment for automatic control (power-off) of machines and electric devices in case of increased methane hazard. The surface part of the monitoring system allows the measuring data to be visualized and pre-alarm (warning) and alarm states to be displayed. Furthermore it makes it possible to archive and report the data and to control the underground supply and signalling devices. The EMAG Institute developed monitoring methods to extend a measuring range of monitored parameters (such as methane and fire hazards) as well as to monitor so far unmonitored hazards like dust hazards (by continuous monitoring of dust levels in mine air) and climatic hazards (by online monitoring climatic parameters of mine air).

"The present study reports solvent extraction and separation of zinc from concentrated nickel sulfate solution. In our previous study, Zn and Cd in cold filter cake (CFC, 45-55% Zn, 11-16% Cd, and 2.5-4% Ni) were extracted by alkaline leaching followed by electrowinning processes respectively. The strip solution from electrowinning process, was a pregnant liquor solution (PLS) containing 16.8 g/l Ni and 4.2 g/l Zn. In this work, PLS is subjected to the solvent extraction process for separation of traces of Zn from high grade nickel. The zinc free raffinate containing 16.6 g/l Ni sulfate solution will flow to nickel electrowinning plant for cathode production. Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) is the organic phase used in this study. The effects of various parameters such as organic phase concentration (10- 40 % v/v), pH (1.5-3), and temperature (25 and 45°) are investigated. Zinc over nickel separation factor increases by increasing pH from1.5 to 3. The results show that 98.7% of Zn was loaded at25°C O/A ratio of 1, pH 3, and 10% vol. D2EHPA. A 10 M NaOH is used for pH control. However, replacement of pH controlling agent with ammonia solution (25%. v/v) results in interesting observations. Ammonia addition, reduces the solubility of Ni2+ cations in solution. Nickel starts to precipitate from raffinate in a crystalline bluish-green form. The obtained crystals are characterized by XRF and identified to be nickel-bearing analog of boussingaultite, a rare sulfate mineral of nickel with chemical formula of Ni (NH4)2(SO4)2.6H2O. The crystallization rate of crystals is studied. It is a slow precipitation process with 75% in 4 days.INTRODUCTION Annually, many hydrometallurgical processes such as electrowinning, solvent extraction and leaching are applied to waste filter cakes in Zanjan, Iran. These additional processes on filter cakes are critical from both environmental and economic points of view. CFC (cold filter cake) is a toxic but valuable filter cake (45-55% Zn, 11-16% Cd, 2.5-4% Ni, and 0.2-1.5% Cu) produced in many zinc production plants. Our research group at Research and Engineering Company for Non-ferrous Metals (ReCo.), developed a series of hydrometallurgical methods for extraction of zinc, cadmium and nickel from CFC (Moradkhani, & Rasouli 2012). The recovery of zinc and cadmium with alkaline leaching and electrowinning was successfully studied. The strip sulfate solution from cadmium electrowinning unit, contains high concentration of nickel with some traces of zinc impurity. This pregnant liquor solution (PLS) was analyzed and reported to contain 16.8 g/l Ni and 4.2 g/l Zn. In this work, PLS is subjected to the solvent extraction process to separate Zn from nickel (Fig. 1). The organic phase stripping solution containing 4.2 g/l zinc and 200 ppm nickel can be circulated and used in the acidic leaching step. This generates nickel solution with high purity suitable for nickel cathode production."

"IntroductionDURING the past half century, the economy of Western Canada was largely centred on agriculture. However, the impact of World War II has led to an acceleration in the development of a variety of natural resources so that, today, Western Canada is experiencing great industrial development. Consequently, the availability •of low-cost energy assumes prime importance. In the final analysis, industrial growth and expansion are intimately linked to the energy resources.Coal ReservesHas Western Canada adequate coal reserves to meet the present accelerating demand for power in the days that lie ahead? This question must be answered before detailed consideration can be given to the probable patterns •by which various energy sources in Western Canada may be expected to meet the expanding demand. Figure 1 indicates the extent and distribution of the Canadian coal reserves, the data having been prepared by Dr. B. R. MacKay for the Royal Commission on Coal in 1946 (1). The amount of readily recoverable coal is listed as one-half the quantities shown on the chart. It is interesting-to note that upwards of 90 per cent •of the Canadian coal reserves .are located in the three most westerly Canadian provinces. It has been estimated that the coal reserves, at the present rate of mining, would be adequate for about 3,000 years. Consequently, it may be concluded that the coal •reserves in Western Canada •are indeed adequate to meet tremendous energy demands for many centuries. When the oil and natural gas have been exhausted, the great coal reserves will still be available."

"Abstract -The Jinqingding gold deposit, situated in the east Jiaodong Peninsula of Shandong province, is typical of the pyrite-quartz vein gold deposits in the Muping-Rushan gold belt of China . The gold deposit is controlled by a great NNE fracture zone and is composed of several lenticular orebodies within the fracture zone occurring in the Kunyushan granite massif. The Kunyushan granite massif was formed by the replacement of the Archean Jiaodong group.The main minerals associated with gold are pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite; the gangue minerals are dominated by quartz, sericite, microcline and calcite. The mineralizing event can be divided into four stages: (1) pyrite-quartz; (2) quartz-pyrite; (3) siderite-polymetallic sulfides; and (4) calcite-quartz. Gold occurs mainly as native gold and electrum in stage 1 and stage II. There are some evident differences between pyrite from major stages of gold mineralization and that from minor stages; these include differences in crystal forms, size and composition of fluid inclusions.Wallrock alterations consist of sericitization, silicification, pyritization and potash-feldspar alteration. Five alteration zones can be distinguished from unaltered granite (zone 0) to vein lodes (zone IV). Au and Ag increase rapidly from zone 0 to zone IV, Cu increases continuously, while Pb and Zn increase slowly. R-type geological factor analysis indicates that the Au, Ag, Cu, Pb and Zn bear a close relationship to wallrock alteration."

THE basic products of the Company are lead and zinc. Around 950 tons of these metals are produced each day. In the last decade, the production of by-products has increased to such an extent that they are now nearly as large an operation as that of the base-metals. Of the many by-products, the most objectionable, and up to a few years ago the most useless, was the sulphur. The sulphur comes in the ore from the Sullivan mine. It is in the ore chiefly as lead, zinc, and iron sulphide. By selective flotation, these three sulphides are separated into the lead concentrates, the zinc concentrates, and the mill tailings. These mill tailings contain the bulk of the iron and the sulphur. Of the 6,5CO tons of ore treated per day, about 5,000 tons are wasted to the mill tailings dump, and, while now valueless, will in future years undoubtedly be used as a source of iron and sulphur. There are about 1,500 tons of sulphur and 2,200 tons of iron per day in the tailings, and about 400 tons of sulphur left in the total concentrates. In the recovery of lead and zinc in the pure form, the first step is the roasting operation. Here, most of the sulphur is driven off as sulphur dioxide in the gases. It has always been apparent that this sulphur should be. recovered and utilized if possible. At the same time, this would cure the smoke nuisance. Because, in spite of the low concentration of sulphur dioxide and the fact that it was discharged from stacks at an elevation of 400 feet above the plant, some damage to vegetation close to the plant had been experienced.

Campbell Mine operates a 100 tpd gold autoclave that treats sulphide concentrates at 305 psi and 200 °C. Autoclave feed consists of fresh pretreated concentrate, an acidic oxide slurry recycle as well as other high arsenic sources. The brickwork that is used to construct the five compartments of the vessel must be inspected and repaired periodically. Shutdowns are scheduled to inspect this brickwork and at times replace entire sections of the brick walls or lining. It also provides an opportunity to repair or replace other internal features such as agitator blades or oxygen spargers. Mechanics and contractors are scheduled around the clock to perform the maintenance requirements. There are many safety considerations and precautions that must be taken in order to protect the well-being of the workers and minimize damage to sensitive pieces of equipment. Heat, arsenic and lead contamination and confined space issues are just a few of the hazards involved. The following paper will describe how these safety concerns are addressed and will serve as a guide for future autoclave shutdowns.

Stellite-6 coatings were formulated on two Ni-base superalloys, namely Superni 75 and Superni 600, by a shrouded plasma-spray process, and the oxidation behaviour of these coatings has been investigated in air and in an aggressive environment of Na2SO4- 60%V2O5. Accelerated oxidation tests were conducted in a silicon-carbide tube furnace under cyclic conditions at an elevated temperature of 900°C for 50 cycles. Each cycle consisted of 1 h heating and 20 min cooling in air. A thermogravimetric technique was used to approximate the oxidation kinetics. The corrosion scales were characterised by XRD, SEM/EDAX and EPMA analysis. It has been observed that the coatings nearly followed the parabolic rate law of oxidation. Overall weight gain conceived in air was just 51% of that in the aggressive environment in the case of coated Superni 75, whereas in case of coated Superni 600, the cumulative weight gain in air was found to be one-third of that in the Na2SO4-60% V2O5 atmosphere. Furthermore, the coating showed very good adherence to both of the substrates during the course of air oxidation, whereas some superficial cracks were observed near the edges of the specimens during the molten salt induced oxidation. XRD analysis revealed the presence of phase-like CoO, CoCr2O4 and Cr2O3 in the oxide scales, which are reported be protective against high-temperature oxidation. The XRD results were further supported by SEM/EDAX and EPMA.

"Since the late 1990s, increased prevalence of severe lung disease among US coal miners has been observed, particularly in central Appalachia where thin-seam mining is prevalent. While respirable silica exposures have been implicated in many cases, the available dust monitoring data from mines shows no explanatory trends. One possible factor could be differences in the relative toxicity of silica particles based on their surface condition. Previous research has indicated that particles with occluded surfaces (e.g., by a thin layer of clay) may be less toxic than those with non-occluded surfaces. However, this dust characteristic has not been investigated before now in central Appalachian mines. In the present study, 18 respirable dust samples from seven central Appalachian mines and two northern Appalachian mines were analyzed to assess the relative occurrence of surface-occluded silica. Results showed that the dust from central Appalachian mines actually had higher fractions of occluded silica, which may be due to extraction of large amounts of rock strata along with the coal. However, the central Appalachian mines also more silica particles overall (i.e., occluded + non-occluded) in terms of total number percentage of respirable particles.INTRODUCTIONResurgence of occupational lung disease among US coal miners, especially in the central Appalachian region, has been observed since the late 1990’s (Gibson, 2016; Zosky et al., 2016; Suarthana et al., 2011; Gamble et al., 2011; Antao et al., 2005; Attfield & Sexias, 1995). In addition to increased prevalence of simple Coal Workers’ Pneumoconiosis (CWP, or “black lung”), the prevalence of severe and rapidly progressive disease has risen dramatically (Almberg et al., 2018; Blackley et al., 2018a, 2018b, 2016, 2014; Graber et al., 2017; Cohen et al., 2016). While exposures to respirable silica have long been known to cause or play a role in diseases such as silicosis or progressive massive fibrosis (PMF), which is conventionally considered as the most advanced form of CWP, it is unclear whether silica is the only culprit in the recent outbreak of severe disease. Indeed, as disease rates have risen, both total respirable dust and silica concentrations generally appear to have declined since the late 1980s, based on regulatory monitoring data in the most affected mining districts (i.e., MSHA coal Districts 4, 5 and 12, which cover central WV, eastern KY and southwestern VA, and southern WV, respectively) (Figure 1). Of course, the latency of disease can vary and may be or more 10 years, but many of the most recent cases are likely to have resulted from exposures that occurred since the late 1980s."

The paper outlines: methods used for the determination of wear metals in motor and transmission oils; contaminents in motor, transmission and crusher lubricating oils; and viscosity determinations. Case histories and costs are presented to illustrate the value of an oil analysis program. Introduction NORANDA MINES LIMITED (BELL COPPER DIVISION) is located on the shores of Babine Lake, approximately 450 miles north of Vancouver, British Columbia. Access to the mine is by road from Topley, B.C., about 40 miles away. When a preventive maintenance analysis program was first considered, it was obvious that if samples were to be sent out for analysis, results would not be available for at least a week, due to the distance from any commercial laboratory. The assay laboratory was asked to investigate the possibility of determining wear metals on site. A limited program was started soon after production commenced, and this has now grown to include all large mobile equipment as well as crushers and grinding mills. The laboratory also now determines viscosity, fuel dilution, dirt and abrasives, glycol and water. All these results are ready within two days. This paper will outline the methods used, data interpretation, several case histories and the benefits from such a program.

"Repeated 3D terrestrial digital photogrammetric surveys were conducted on hard rock mine pillars to characterize damage during secondary mining. Damage was quantified by measuring Depth of Failure, DOF, from spalling material and crack intensity, D21. These damage values were then correlated to visually assessed Pillar Damage Ratings and numerically estimated pillar loads. Measured damage, particularly Depth of Failure, correlated well with Pillar Damage Ratings. Numerical predicted pillar stress vs. damage exhibited the expected trend with shorter pillars being stronger. High resolution photographs and 3D models were also used to characterize damage mechanisms, which were found to be structurally constrained. INTRODUCTIONThe Doe Run companies Southeast Missouri Operations consists of six room and pillar lead mines (Brushy Creek, No. 29, Casteel, Buick, Fletcher and, Sweetwater) (The Doe Run Company, 2014). The mines are hosted in the Carbonates and Shales of the Viburnum trend with mining depths varying from 180 to 300 m. Pillars are commonly cut square with widths varying from 7 to 9 m and heights generally between 5 and 18 m, resulting in extraction ratios between 80 and 85% (Roberts et al., 1999). Figure 1 presents an idealized stratigraphic section through the Viburnum trend and Figure 2 shows a plan view of the five areas spanning the three mines included in this study."

With the ever increasing demand for commodities, due to changes in lifestyle and increase in population, people are striving to find ways to keep up. Mining is one essential element in the solution. Though being a powerful boost to a country?s economy, mining can have disastrous effects in the absence of waste management practice and technologies; because of the harmful heavy metals and toxic chemical waste that is generated as a by-product in mining operations. It is an established and documented fact that pollution is a major concern for communities having to live with it. Disproportionate water consumption significantly impacts local rivers and ponds thereby reducing freshwater availability and have given rise to social conflict. In light of these misgivings, management and treatment of mine water and waste has gained considerable attention recently. In this paper, we summarize some of the treatment methods that can be adopted by mining companies to reduce their environmental footprint. Appropriate treatment solutions depend on various factors including available space and capital cost for treatment solutions, type of mining waste generated, current state of the mining plant, geographical location, and other location specific issues. Incorporating waste and water management solutions as a priority within mining operations is critical for addressing increasing regulatory requirements and a starting point for initiating other Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs. Collaboration among mining companies, NGOs, local community, and government facilitates successful projects which build trust leading to long term relationships. In this paper we also talk about the benefits of implementing a CSR project that captures the focus of local communities and allows the mining company to focus on operations. Implementing a sustainable business model that incorporates the broader community impacted by projects will continue to benefit even after the mining company ceases operation in that location. The challenges involved with implementing effective CSR projects, which require measuring and reporting effectiveness to create a positive social, economic, and environmental impact is also presented in this paper.

Previous papers (1, 2) pertaining to the treatment of uranium-bearing ores were concerned with the flotation of the radioactive minerals. In this investigation, the application of flotation to the removal of acid-consuming minerals from uranium ores was considered. Two pitchblende-bearing ores, which, because of the presence if dolomite were abnormally high acid consumers, were studied. In both in-stances commercial reagents of widely varying fatty acid composition proved satisfactory as flotation col-lectors, particularly at a pH of 10.5, for the carbonate minerals. From an economic viewpoint, however, Neo-Fat 42-12 was favoured. A mixture of sodium tripolyphosphate and citric acid was an effective depressant for the pitchblende in the ores. The tailings remaining after the removal of the dolomite by flotation contained, in one case, 88.5 per cent of the uranium in the original sample, and, in the other, 93.8 per cent. A groupd of French capitalists, La Compagnie Française des Mines d'Or du Canada, has undertaken the considerable task of developing Otter creek, in the Atlin district, B.C., by hydraulic mining methods. It has long been known that the gravels of this stream carry sufficiently high values in gold to make it attractive as a mining venture, but it was impossible to ignore the existence of formidable natural obstacles to hydraulicing them, and these needed to be taken into serious account before embarking upon any costly programme of development. The tide to the Otter Creek leases was originally held by Mr. H. Maluin, a French engineer well known throughout the north, to whom was to fall the task of financing whatever programme might be decided upon. It was he, too, who would have to assume the responsibility of finally passing judgment upon the practicability of the various devises for overcoming the adverse natural conditions. With an infinite attention to detail, which I believe to be a characteristic of the French people generally, he studied his problem and was finally able to submit to his financial backers a programme which left the very minimum possible to the hazard of accident or chance. Dr. Mandy, on his visit to Otter creek this season, expressed the opinion that our method of opening this difficult creek presented certain features which might be successfully applied in placer operations elsewhere in British Columbia, and it is largely for this reason that the present paper has been prepared. I shall set forth, as well as I can, the practices which have enabled us to overcome rather easily some of the obstacles which nature had unkindly placed in the path which we must take. The natural flow of water in Otter creek is far too little to deal success-fully with the rather excessive amount of glacial drift overburden which lies directly over the gold-bearing gravels. For this natural defect, the only remedy was to procure more water. This we have clone through a system of flumes and ditches, totalling between ten and eleven miles in length, which bring to the mine a supply of water adequate for our needs.
