The Noranda concentrator was placed in operation in October, 1928, and the object of this paper is to outline operations during the twelve months which have elapsed since that time. The ores milled are massive sulphides carrying copper and gold, and, in certain cases, zinc. These ores have a specific gravity of about 3.8. The average assay of the copper-gold ore so far treated has been 2.0 - 3.5 percent Cu; 0.10 - 0.20 oz. Au; 40 - 51 percent Fe; and 6 - 15 percent SiO2. In this ore the copper occurs almost entirely as chalcopyrite, and the iron which is not combined with the copper is present mainly as pyrite and pyrrhotite. ?some iron is also combined with the silica, the ratio being about 1 to 4, and a small percentage is present as magnetite. The occurrence of the gold has been shown by microscopic work carried out by Prof. L. C. Graton, of Harvard University, to be very variable. Some of it is free, and is included within the base-metal sulphides or occurs at their boundaries. A similar distribution also holds for a portion of the gold which is combined as a telluride. Little is so far known of the occurrence of the silver other than that some of it may be combined with the gold in the telluride, petzite. The copper-zinc ore contains up to 6 percent copper, and has a very variable zinc content. The copper in such ore is present as chalcopyrite, and the zinc as sphalerite. In starting the mill we had three conditions to face; the first of these was climatic, the second was the lack of skilled flotation operators, and the third was the ore itself." The last of these three proved much more difficult to contend with than the other two combined.

Possibly the most complex fatigue problem associated with the development of the axial-flow 'gas turbine is discussed in its broader aspects from the metallurgical viewpoint. Reference is made to nodal patterns, interference diagrams, etc. The use of such data in analysis of a turbine :blade failure is illustrated. Special attention is given to the influence of some metallurgical variables affecting fatigue strength and, in particular, heat treatment is shown to have a pronounced effect on .the relative fatigue and creep strength properties of a nickel-chromium-cobalt base alloy suitable for turbine blade applications.

"Extruded aluminum profiles are increasingly used for lightweight vehicle construction. Since fracture strains of aluminum profiles are relatively low, damage modeling is crucial for reliable crash simulation. For aluminum profiles, not only the stress state but also the orientation influenced both the deformation and damage behavior. For the material characterization smooth tensile tests were performed in six orientations, both stress-strain curves and r-values were registered. Moreover notched tensile and shear-tension tests were performed in three directions. Finally punch specimens were tested to investigate biaxial loading. Digital image correlation (DIC) analyses were performed to determine local strain values such as critical values at failure. Numerical investigations were conducted with the strain based damage model GISSMO, which is well suited and widely applied for crash simulation. For a strain based failure model the choice of the deformation model is crucial. Deformation models with increasing complexity were investigated to find the best compromise over all experiments. It was found that there is still a great requirement on development of a material model which describes the orientation dependence of the hardening behavior over all stress states in order to be able to use a strain based failure model reliably.INTRODUCTION Weight reduction is an important step for less energy consumption and as a consequence aluminium is increasingly used in automotive parts. An important field of application is the well-established aluminium extrusion which allows the realisation of quite complex shapes of profiles required for an innovative lightweight design with integrated functions. Typical applications are chassis parts, bumpers, crash elements, air bags, etc. Especially the Al–Mg–Si medium strength alloys of the 6000 series can be easily extruded to form complex profiles and prevail for extrusion. Since fracture strains of aluminum profiles are relatively low, damage modeling is crucial for reliable crash simulation. For aluminum profiles not only the influence of the stress state but also the orientation with respect to the extrusion direction have an influence on both the deformation and damage behavior and need to be characterized. The effect of orientation on deformation behavior has been intensively investigated in the last decades and material models haves been proposed (e.g. Barlat & Lian, 1989; Barlat, Lege, & Brem, 1991; Barlat et al., 2003) to describe accurately anisotropic behavior. However it can be noticed that the parameters of anisotropic material models often rely on the yield stress in different directions, which means that the effect of strain hardening is not automatically accounted for. The accuracy of the models at large deformation is not guaranteed and has to be verified. In contrast to deformation models both the characterisation and the modeling of anisotropic damage behavior are not systematically studied. Isotropic failure models based on a critical strain as function of stress triaxiality (ratio of the hydrostatic stress to von Mises equivalent stress) are widely used for crash application (e.g., Bai & Wierzbicki, 2010; Sun, Andrieux & Feucht, 2009; Sun et al., 2013). The mechanisms of failure are manifold and not fully understood; to develop an anisotropic failure model it is mandatory to also have experimental data in different orientations for loading scenarios other than uniaxial tension, e. g. shear, biaxial tension, which implies an extensive experiment plan. This makes the development of failure models more challenging than deformation models for which it is possible to develop a reasonable anisotropic model using the framework of yield function and calibrate the material parameters based on results of tensile tests in different directions. The biggest advantage of non-caustic fine tailings and treating caustic fine tailings with coagulant is an increased initial settlement rate and slightly increased hydraulic conductivity at higher void ratios. "Equity Silver Mines Limited, Canada's largest silver mine, has designed, built and operated a leach plant to reduce the levels of antimony and arsenic in its silver-gold-copper flotation concentrate. The orebody contained deleterious antimony and arsenic minerals in such proportions that the economic long-term sales contracts necessary to obtain project financing could not be procured. Construction of the leach plant therefore allowed development of the mine to proceed. Although the plant took some time to reach design throughput and product specifications, due to the complex and unique nature of the operation, these goals were successfully met and surpassed. This paper describes the physical plant and/or process technology modifications made to mold the main processes-concentrate leaching and filtering, autoclaving and filtration of by-products, and crystallization of salt cake-into an effective, economic operation.IntroductionEquity Silver Mines Limited, a member of the Placer Development Group, owns and operates an open-pit silver mine and related facilities located 37 kilometres southeast of Houston in north-central British Columbia. The mine occupies a 44 I-hectare (1089 acre) site at an elevation of 1300 metres (4265 feet) on the Nechako Plateau. Producing a copper concentrate containing high values of silver and gold, it is the largest silver mine in Canada and one of the largest in the western world. Equity stresses open communications, positive motivation, and production with safety, and achieved the best mine safety record in western Canada in 1984."

Methods have been developed for processing and analyzing reflected solar radiation data obtained by Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper multispectral scanner. Spatial resolution for the Landsat series satellites is 30 meters per side per pixel. Materials on the Earth?s surface absorb or reflect different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum depending on their physical and chemical properties and, therefore, typically have characteristic spectral ?signatures?. Using these signatures, environmental parameters such as surface water and vegetation may be identified and analyzed. Principal advantages of the satellite image method for environmental monitoring include: a relatively long historic period beginning in 1985 for which information is available, the reliable numerical basis for the results, and the ability to assemble a historic environmental baseline and provide on-going monitoring for large or remote areas where standard monitoring methods may not be practical. However, because the long-term continued operation of Landsat 5 is problematic due to the age of the equipment, QuickBird and IKONOS satellite images were processed to determine if the two systems are sufficiently similar in their results to allow continuing monitoring using QuickBird data. The QuickBird satellite was launched in 2001 and collects the same visible and near infrared spectral bandwidths as Landsat 5, allowing for equivalent process algorithms for QuickBird, IKONOS, and Landsat 5 data. Spatial resolution for the QuickBird images is 2.4 meter per side, allowing for more detailed characterization of the land surface; spatial resolution for the IKONOS images is 4 meter per side. Because of several differences between the satellite systems, including degradation of the Landsat 5 sensor, it is necessary to calibrate QuickBird and IKONOS results to the Landsat results to verify similarity. Recent images from the satellite systems have been processed and results have been compared to determine the validity of comparing Landsat 5 and QuickBird/IKONOS images so that these newer data can be used reliably in the future instead of Landsat 5 data. Results from this comparison are presented in this paper and suggest that analyses for vegetation using the two satellite systems are comparable, and that little calibration is required. Results from comparison of surface water results from the two systems are less comparable and is currently being investigated by the authors.

"IntroductionUNTIL the recent discovery and development of deposits at Allard Lake, on the Lower Romaine river, practically the whole of Quebec's - and indeed of Canada's - production of ilmenite had come from deposits in the vicinity of St. Urbain, Charlevoix •county, a village about eight miles north of Bay St. Paul on the north shore of the St. Lawrence, some sixty miles below the city of Quebec (see Figure l) . Although these deposits were known nearly three hundred years ago and were worked in a small way during the years 1872-74, when a charcoal blast furnace was operated by the Canadian Titanic Iron Company for making white pig iron, it was not until 1908 that more or less continuous production commenced and has •continued to the present by the American Titanic Iron Company. The whole of the output has been exported to the United States.The ilmenite occurs in lenses •and dyke-like bodies within anorthosite. Production has come chiefly from three deposits: General Electric, Furnace, and East and West Coulombe. During 1951 -52, an extensive diamond drilling programme was carded out under the direction of the writer to test the Furnace and the East and West Coulombe deposits (Figures 2 and 3), which form part of the property of St. Lawrence Iron and Titanium Mines, Limited. The average tenor of the orebodies encountered in the course of the drilling was 38.60 per cent TiO2 and, in addition to these high-grade •bodies, there was found a very considerable tonnage of lower grade ore."

"Prognosis and health management (PHM) is an evolving suite of technologies intended for application to the life cycle management (LCM) of mission/safety critical systems, with anticipated results, which will: - Reduce life cycle cost - Enhance operational safety and readiness - Assist in maintenance decision-making - Enable autonomic logistics While it is emphasized in the United States that future multi-mission fighter aircraft such as Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) must have PHM capabilities, Canadian initiatives also recognize the need to implement such schemes for future and legacy military and civil aerospace systems. With respect to four major technology areas of PHM, i.e., i) advanced sensors, ii) data analysis and fusion, iii) life consumption evaluation, and iv) predictions with reliability/risk assessment, there has been advanced technologies developed by NRC and others within Canada: - Aircraft/engine instrumentation and airborne data recording systems - Signal analysis and data fusion - On-line engine health monitoring - Physics based models for engine material failure modes and life prediction - Autonomic crack growth analysis for damage tolerance of engine components - Mission severity analysis algorithm - Probability, reliability and risk assessment This presentation reviews the above technologies in relevance to PHM, emphasizes the need to have physics based models and outlines the future R&D needs for integration and implementation of these technologies suitable for the advanced and legacy aircraft."

Rock-breaker automation and remote operation improves the safety and efficiency of mining operations. This article presents an overview of the Rocklogic rock-breaker automation system architecture that provides collision avoidance, automated parking, and remote operation functionality. The system consists of a distributed computer control system that interfaces with sensors attached to the rock-breaker, the rock-breaker hydraulics, and the site infrastructure. We present results of an automated Transmin rockbreaker installed in a production environment at an underground Australian mine site. The system has been in production use for over 900 days during which there have been no reported collisions, and 100% adoption of the remote operation technology. As a result, Rocklogic has significantly improved the safety of rock-breaking operations and reduced the rock-breaking cycle time, thereby improving the sites overall throughput.

"Advanced radiation resistant oxide dispersion strengthened steel (ARROS) is being developed as a fuel cladding tube material for future nuclear reactor system applications. The research activities consist of advanced radiation resistant ODS steel development and fabrication technology development of ODS steel structural components. One candidate material with a chemical composition of (in wt%) Fe-10Cr-1Mo-0.5Mn-0.1V-0.25Ti-0.35Y2O3and was selected as representative materials, and this material was named as the advanced radiation resistant ODS steel (ARROSTM).On the basis of this ODS steel composition, an optimized fabrication process of structural components such as plates, sheets and tubes has been established through various process conditions in mechanical alloying, hot/cold working, and heat treatment processes. These R&D activities are expected to contribute to the realization of ODS materials in the future.INTRODUCTIONA sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR) is being developed at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) with a view to economics, safety, reliability, and sustainability. The prototype Gen-IV SFR with a capacity of 150 MWe is under design, and this prototype reactor is scheduled to operate from 2028. For a commercial SFR system application, it is necessary to develop an advanced structural material having both high creep strength and irradiation resistance at high temperatures (Jeong, 2014). Oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS)steel is one of the most promising structural materials because of its excellent creep and irradiation resistance on the basis of uniformly distributed nano-oxide particles with a high density, which is extremely stable at high temperatures under a neutron irradiation environment for a prolonged operating period(Kim, 2016). As the first step, several batches of ODS steel were designed and the candidate samples with a 2 kg scale each were fabricated by mechanical alloying, hot isostatic pressing and hot rolling processes. The mechanical properties of these samples were evaluated. Up to now, two candidate materials with chemical compositions of (in wt%) Fe-10Cr-1Mo-0.5Mn-0.1V-0.25Ti-0.35Y2O3 was selected as representative materials, and these materials were named as the advanced radiation resistant ODS steel (ARROSTM).The next step was to optimize the fabrication process of the ARROS compositions for in-core structural components such as the fuel cladding tubes of a SFR. An optimized fabrication process of fuel cladding tube with a composition of ARROS has been established through various process conditions in mechanical alloying, hot consolidation, hot/cold working and heat treatment processes. Joining technologies of the ODS steel tubes is being developed using solid-state welding such as magnetic pulse welding, friction stir welding and diffusion boding. It is expected that the development of ARROS will contribute to the realization of a commercial SFR with high economics and sufficient safety in the future. In this paper, the study of fabrication process of ARROS structural components is introduced."

"The use of large AG/SAG mills in the mineral industry has been on the rise recently due to a significant reduction in the capital and operating costs for achieving significant increases in plant throughputs. The major reason for downtimes in these mills is the time taken for the replacement of broken or worn liners. This loss of “availability” of these units has a significant impact on the productivity of these plant operations. The ability to predict liner life time and its evolving shape could help to optimize these comminution operations. In the past decades, various models have been proposed to estimate liner wear rate, but because of their empirical nature they could only be used within certain limited operating conditions. In this research, a phenomenological model which could predict the liner wear rate was proposed and tested. This model considers parameters such as; operating conditions, liner hardness, pressure on the lifter, and, relative velocity of particles and mill shell. Data from industrially measured liner profiles were taken during the liner life time at the Sarcheshmeh and the Gol-E-Ghohar SAG mills to provide a solid base to calibrate and validate the model. The comparison of the model predictions with the actual measurements of the liner wear rate showed that the results were in a good agreement at both, the Sarcheshmeh (R2=0.94), and the Gol-E-Ghohar (R2=0.97) concentrators.INTRODUCTIONAG/SAG mills are one of the most important technologies in the mineral processing industry in the recent decades. The “Availability” of these units in a plant operation is one of the most important economic parameter for evaluating their performance. The major reason for the downtime of these mills affecting their “availability”, is the time required to change worn or broken liners (Yahyaei, Banisi, & Hadizadeh, 2009; Maleki-Moghaddam, Yahyaei, & Banisi, 2012). The knowledge about the magnitude and profile of liner wear not only enables more accurate liner life estimation to prevent unwanted interruptions of the SAG milling in mineral processing plants and more strategically plan the scheduled mill outages for liner changes. It also could provide key information needed to select an appropriate liner design (Yahyaei et al., 2009; Rezaeizadeh, Fooladi, Powell, & Weerasekara, 2010a)."

The eastern and southeastern regions of Ohio are part of Appalachian coal country, with a documented 1,300 miles of streams impacted by acid mine drainage. Since 1995, partnerships of local watershed groups, government agencies, private industries and universities have focused on the remediation of the affected waterways. The partnerships have spent $2.4 million annually in constructing and operating treatment systems such as wetlands, anoxic limestone drains, successive alkalinity production systems, steel slag leach beds, and lime dosers. These systems have been partially successful, and water quality has improved in the region, but no treatment has yet met the ultimate objectives of low cost, continual remediation. Our research group has investigated an alternative system for acid mine drainage treatment: electrolysis combined with pH adjustment to selectively precipitate recoverable, saleable metal products to offset the cost of treatment. We utilized a $0.2 million pilot facility constructed by the Wayne National Forest, in Nelsonville, Ohio, to process approximately 40 L/min of mine drainage from surrounding seeps. The pilot facility has multipurpose tanks that can be adapted to process acid mine drainage with different characteristics, such as high or low aluminum content or high or low carbonate concentrations. Sodium hydroxide was used for pH adjustment. Results indicate that saleable product can be generated with this treatment technology. In an initial, not optimized trial, one seep yielded 4.7 kg of dried 69 % iron oxide product from 10 hours of pilot facility operation, treating 23,000 L with electricity costs of $4.68. Dissolved iron concentrations in the water were reduced from 242 ± 18 mg/L to 2.8 ± 2.0 mg/L (99.0 % removal) while the initial acidity of 443 mg/L as CaCO3 was neutralized to an alkalinity of 160 mg/L as CaCO3. Iron oxide can be sold as pigment for an average of $1.47 per kg in the United States. Currently, approximately 80 % of all pigment used in the United States is imported, and there is incentive to purchase domestically recovered pigment. If the iron oxide from the pilot facility could be sold as pigment for $1.47 per kg, 43 % of the operating cost (raw materials, electricity and construction costs) of treatment could be offset by the sale of the product. Considering the cost offset, the electrolysis process shows potential as a sustainable low cost alternative for treating acid mine drainage.

ABSTRACT Inco’s Iron Ore Recovery Plant was operated by Inco from 1955 to 1980 near Sudbury, Ontario. As exposures to specific nickel substances have been associated with adverse respiratory endpoints it is important to understand processes giving rise to such substances. This manuscript discusses the process and equipment, the propensity for aerosol formation, and operational procedures used by Inco in roasting a pyrrhotite concentrate, reducing the nickel in the formed oxide, leaching the nickel in ammoniacal solution, purifying the resulting solution, making green or black NiO, and producing iron oxide pellets. Industrial hygiene measurements are also reported.

Spray-on polymer linings, as partial or full replacement for traditional forms of area rock support, have seen rapid growth in interest within Canada. A wide variety of lining types, ranging from polymer chemical to water-based cementitious materials, have been developed and commercially introduced to the underground mining market. Following approximately one decade of development work, several general conclusions have been reached regarding the performance of this class of area support media, these being that: health and safety assessment of the broad range of materials has shown the majority of them to be acceptable and safe for underground use; significant ground support potential can be offered by them, being equivalent to or better than capabilities offered by traditional support forms such as bolt-and-screen or shotcrete, and; their abilities to be rapidly deployed and provide near instantaneous support restraint offer considerable operational and cost benefits to underground operators. A review of currently available liner materials, their historic development within the Canadian mining industry, and overviews of support, health and safety, operational considerations and cost benefits are provided in this paper.

When producing high grade mattes in smelter plants, copper losses in the slag are inevitable. Hence, the recovery of copper from slag has been the focus of many research projects, copper flotation being a widely used process. In the Khatoonabad converter, 200 t/d of slag are presently produced with a grade of 2.3% Cu. Assuming a 85% recovery by flotation, about 3.9 t/d copper could be produced, which is of prime importance economically. In the present work, a sample of this slag was crushed and ground in the laboratory to liberate the copper-bearing minerals. Following mineralogical studies, optimum laboratory flotation parameters were obtained, resulting in 90.27 % recovery and 9.42% of copper grade for the rougher stage. At pilot scale, a pulp of 28% solids was floated at ph 10.5 using 40 git of Z6, 25 git of R407 and 20 git of MIBC and A65. A recovery of 83.52% was obtained for a concentrate grade of 28.36% Cu. In the rougher cells, the feed consisted of particles 94% finer than 74 microns whereas in the cleaning stage, particles were 95% finer than 44 microns. Based on the obtained results, the Sarcheshmeh Khatoonabad converter slag is presently being fed to the Chargonbad flotation plant, where a concentrate of 32% copper at 86% recovery is being produced.

"Compressed air still remains an essential source of power in underground hardrock mining. As a power medium it has a high convenience factor, although, in many cases, it is expensive to generate and maintain. Until new methods of breaking rock and/ or satisfactory alternatives to air-driven rock drills are developed, compressed air is indispensable. It is essential to utilize this source of power to a maximum by keeping all pneumatic tools supplied with air in adequate quantity and at optimum pressure.In search of the optimum operating air pressure, con-trolled drilling tests were undertaken at dynamic pressures ranging from 90 to 140 psi.Test results show the effect of increasing air pressure on: the performance of various jackleg drills at varying pressures, the life cost of drill steels and TC bits, and drilling efficiency at varying pressures. From the fore-going, a criterion is proposed for selecting efficient rock drills, and, also, optimum air pressure at each mine can be determined for its particular conditions."

The preparation of high-purity zirconyl compounds was studied in order to develop an economical process for obtaining pure zirconium via the caustic fritting of zircon sand. The direct dissolution of caustic frits with concentrated hydrochloric or nitric acid at 80c. followed by the addition of a small amount of acidified gelatin, gave high-purity zirconyl chloride or nitrate. The addition of a small amount of gelatin caused a mutual flocculation between colloidal silica and gelatin. The precipitation of this silica floc markedly lowered the content of silica in the product. The silica content of the compounds (or solution) so produced, generally less than 100 ppm., was sufficiently low for tributyl phosphate extraction for nitrate solutions. It was found that the degree of purification de-pends not only on the procedures employed but also on the nature of the frit itself. Silica was more effectively eliminated from the fritted product produced at higher temperatures, and less silica was present in the com-pound prepared from the frit produced in a shorter heating time. "The highly specialized communication systems used in the mining industry place exacting demands on equipment and transmission media. Safely and reliability of services are perhaps the two most important factors. Fibre optics is ideally suited 10 meet these stringent requirements. Aside from being an intrinsically safe, non-sparking and EMI/RFI immune medium , fibre optics offers greater reliability , higher quality of services and superior flexibility over conventional copper or radio-based communication systems.This paper wilt show how fibre optics can be applied in mining industry applications. Emerging trends and concepts will be presented to show how fibre-optic-based integrated service communication networks and local distribution systems can be implemented.IntroductionCommunication requirements in today's mine s are varied and extensive. The communication system must be rugged , safe and reliable, yet provide an ever increasing amount of high quality services. Presently, these systems are implemented using conventional copper cable. As mining method s and technology advance and the demand for better and more communication services increases, traditional systems quickly reach their limitations. It is under these circumstances that we turn to fibre optic communication systems.Fibre optics is a mature technology which is finding its way into more and more applications worldwide. A fibre optic communication system can provide a level of performance unattainable by conventional cable systems yet ca n be cost competitive. As is well known, fibre optics provides a noise-free, noise-immune, high -capacity communications channel. Glass fibre, being dielectric and non-sparking, is an intrinsically safe communications medium. Clearly, it is ideally suited to the harsh environment present in a mine.From a communication systems point-of-view, the topology of a deep mine is unique. The objective of the systems engineer is to implement a total communications capability throughout this wide spread area. Ideally all classes of services should be accessible throughout the network-an integrated network concept. Recent advances in communications technology combined with fibre optics make this realizable."

"Abstract -The old Albert Silver Mine is a polymetallic deposit comprising concentrations of Cu­ Pb-Zn-Ag-U-F within a set of sub-parallel quartz-hematite veins which occur within the fine-grained apical phase of the 2050 Ma old A-type Bushveld granites. Mineralization occurs as an early pyrite­ chalcopyrite-arsenopyrite-galena-sphalerite-(argentiferous) tetrahedrite paragenesis followed by a later, more oxidized assemblage comprising chlorite-hematite-fluorite-pitchblende. Accumulation of metals appears to have taken place at the interface between a coarse-grained porphyritic granite and an overlying fine-grained phase: veins occur in the latter and represent leakage of magmatic fluids from the differentiated, water-saturated, subjacent granite.Mineralization processes in the Bushveld granites are believed to be related to long-lived circulation of dominantly magmatic fluids stimulated by the high heat productive capacity of the host rocks. Endo- and exogranitic tin-tungsten and base metal mineralization formed during an evolving hydrothermal system that lasted for several hundred million years, forming innumerable small- to medium­ scale polymetallic deposits. At the Albert Silver Mine, unroofing of the cover sequences at circa 1600 Mato 1700 Ma resulted in the incursion of lower-temperature, high-f02 meteoric fluids which remobilized the earlier sulfides and introduced the paragenetically late U-F mineralization ."
