Epithermal gold mineralisation was discovered at the Muyup prospect during regional reconnaissance exploration in 1986. Further exploration utilising routine techniques of stream sediment, panconcentrate, rockchip sampling and geological mapping resulted in the discovery of five auriferous vein systems located along northwest-trending fault zones. Scout diamond drilling was conducted on two of the vein systems. Mineralisation is hosted by a poorly exposed, mid-Tertiary volcanic inlier composed of intermediate and minor felsic volcanic rocks intruded by intermediate hypabyssal por- phyries. Gold is wholly contained in narrow steep-dipping hydrothermal breccias and quartz vein stockworks in which chalcedonic silica and fine grained quartz is the predominant gangue with minor adularia, carbonate, and sulphides. Alteration zoning is manifested as intense fracture-controlled silicification mantled by narrow clay-rich envelopes which in tam grade outward and downward into propylitic alteration or unaltered host rocks. Late advanced argillic alteration is superimposed on the vein-related altera- tion assemblages. Alteration assemblages and fluid inclusion data suggest that gold mineralisation occurred in response to episodic hydraulic fractur- ing and boiling of low to moderate temperature, dilute alkali-chloride fluids. The Muyup prospect represents the shallow eroded remnants of an epither- mal gold deposit enriched in Au, Ag, As, Sb and Hg. Low sulphur fugacities reflected by vein and alteration assemblages support an adularia-sericite classification (Heald et al, 1987) for this epithennal gold deposit.

A pilot scale laboratory investigation of manual slurry sampling methods representative of those used in the minerals industry is described. Samples were taken from slurries made up from silica particles of various sizes and in various concentrations from a stirred tank and from the discharge lip of a rectangular launder. Sampling methods from the tank included immersion flasks and several configurations of a suction probe. The launder was sampled using a conventional narrow-mouth ladle and also with a 'mouth organ' stream splitter. Samples were analysed for overall solids concentration and size distribution and showed different but always significant and often large biases relative to the known overall composition of the slurry, the nature and extent of bias being dependent on pulp concentration, particle size, sampling method and sampling location. Results clearly show the very great difficulty of obtaining representative samples by simple sampling techniques, although the data suggest that errors can be reduced by using an appropriately designed and operated suction probe. Further work will be carried out with the objective of establishing guidelines for industrial sampling practice.

Coal is of tremendous importance for the Czechoslovak econ- omy. The current annual primary energy demand being about 109 million tons of standard fuel (1 ton of standard fuel - 7,000 coal = 29,308 GJ), coal satisfies almost two thirds of our fuel consumption. If compared with the distribution of resources in the world's fuel and energy pattern, the situation in Czechos- lovakia is significantly different, as shown in Fig. I. One of the causes behind the difference is that the Czechoslo- vak oil and natural gas reserves and, hence, their production are insignificant, so that it is necessary to import them. Brown coal will continue to play an important role as a prin- cipal domestic source of primary energy even in the future. While the share of nuclear power is increasing, brown coal represents strategic reserves in the fuel and energy balance.

Technological developments in modem Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) and associated back-up equipment are offering significant alternatives for mining operators to consider, in the selection of equipment for coal mine development drifts, roadways, longwall gate roads as well as metalliferous mining declines and development drives.Greater flexibility in handling variable ground conditions, muck disposal and radius of turn as well as advance rates, are just some of the areas where modem TBMs can accomplish the flexibility that mine operators require to achieve cost-effective developments.Compact TBMs are achieving this acceptance because of the fundamental design of a shielded machine containing electrics and hydraulics within the forward shell, ability to achieve tight radius of curvature and grades, and ability to provide highly flexible support systems to meet all possible ground conditions.However, a single TBM design will not suit all mine developments, as each development method - while having common goals with all mine developments - will also require certain unique criteria to be fulfilled.

These' limitations have led to the development of a totally new concept of screening, the Rotating Probability Screen. Chlorine as a lixiviant for gold possesses a number of significant chemical and Idnetic advantages over cyanide but because of its corrosive and vaporous nature the method of implementation needs to be significantly modified. At comparable reagent concentrations the dissolution rate for gold in the C12/Cl- systems is some 10 - 100 times that achieved in the 02/CN system. The dissolution rate in the chlorine system is largely a function of the concentration of C12, Cl- and pH. Under conditions of low Cl', (less than 50 g/1), the dissolution rate begins to drop off dramatically over the pH range from 3 - 4. Increasing the level of dissolved chloride ions shifts the pH of this rate reduction to around pH 5 at 100 g/l NaCl, and to around pH 6 at 300 g/l NaCl.

Currently, mine plans are optimised by using several criteria as objective functions, like profit, life-of-mine, concentration of some pollutants, mining costs, confidence level or ore resources, with consideration of constraints related to production rates, plant capacities and grades. Whilst this approach is successful in terms of producing high value production schedules, it uses a static opening sequence of the drawpoints and therefore the optimisation is made within the level of freedom left by the original opening schedule, and as a result it is far from the true optimal value of the project. This paper presents a model to optimise the sequence of drawpoint opening over a given time horizon. The emphasis is in the precedence constraints that are required to produce meaningful operational sequences considering the exploitation method (panel or block caving), physics considerations and logical rules. Further on, while it applies the standard approach of maximising net present value (NPV), it considers other targets for optimisation, like the robustness and constructability of the plans. Finally, it applies the model to real data to obtain feasible plans by means of this model. The first tests were done varying the production capacity of the mine.

Firstly, electric analog models are discus- sed to show fluid streaming conditions. In these models the depth of blast at tuyere level, the height of the bath, the influ- ence of different angles of the furnace zones and the different possibilities of the root of the cohesive zone have been changed. Tests to define the influence at a large blast furnace are given. Secondly, the wear of carbon bricks in the hearth is examined under the influence of gas, slag and pig iron. Oxidation tests in a special scanning microscope with the pos- sibility of heating and gas treatment are shown. Wear mechanisms are discussed fora large blast furnace and proposals for im- provement are given. Finally, the possib- ilities and value of the temperature meas- urement in the hearth block are discussed.

There are many variables in a flotation concentrator, some of which are outside the actual flotation stage, which affect metallurgical performance. The number of such variables which can now be measured on a continuous basis has increased significantly over the past 20 years. They can be broadly classified under the headings of physical, chemical, and elemental. In this paper reference is made to a number of such variables, and comment is made on the state of the art in their measurement. Although not confined to development in Australia, particular reference is made to the considerable Australian contribution in this area of Technology.

The boundary element method is one of a number of tools that have found wide application in geomechanics for mine design and stress analysis. Two examples are presented in this paper, illustrating the use of the boundary element method to find potential problem regions in large-scale excavations. These examples are from a Papua New Guinea open cut mine and an Australian sub-level caving operation. Because of the scale of the mines and the complexity of the excavations, the boundary element method is the only practical numerical modelling technique to account for the major influences. Although the boundary element method uses only linear elastic models of the rock mass, the paper illustrates techniques for dealing with non-homogenous and anisotropic rock masses, as well as clasto-plastic effects associated with an excavation.

Pressure on production at New Zealand China Clays has led to the development of a dewatering control loop for fine halloysite china clay. The development was based on the analysis of data from the automation of plate and frame filter presses. The analysis of the data has led to process changes, and the ability to quickly solve dewatering problems. As a result of control in the dewatering circuit press times have reduced on average 117% and output has increased proportionally.

Appin Colliery mines the Bulli Seam with a gas composition of 98.5% methane and 1.5% carbon dioxide. Relaxation of the strata generally occurs to below the base of the Wongawilli Seam, some 40 m below the Bulli Seam, and approxim- ately 125 m above the Bulli Seam, for longwall face widths of 135 m or more. Previous exper- ience showed that when longwall faces were mined for a distance approximately equal to the face width, the mine ventilation could not provide sufficient dilution due to methane emissions from the underlying measures. Postdraining downholes were drilled to intersect the Wongawilli Seam below the operat- ng longwall. These holes were connected to an underground to surface gas range and various suction levels were applied to improve gas drainage. The resulting gas flow rates and purity from all the downholes were regularly monitored and peak flows in some holes exceeded 160 1/sec. The surface plant drained almost 20 million m3 of gas for the period July 1981 to January 1982 at an average methane purity of approximately 70%. Distinct patterns emerged for different downholes from curves illustrat- ing their variations in flow rate with distance subsequent to passage of the longwall face. Many narrow-vein gold deposits are characterised by a high to extreme nugget effect and the presence of coarse gold. They rank amongst the most difficult of deposits to produce an accurate and precise resource estimate. This contribution presents a case study from the Nalunaq Gold Mine in Southern Greenland. The mine commenced operation in May 2004 and is currently operating at a rate of 400 tonnes per day, to produce about 100 000 oz gold per annum from a total resource base of 1.2 Moz. Mineralisation is characterised by quartz veins that are hosted within a shear zone that is continuous over about 1000 m. The principal orebody is the Main Vein structure, which ranges up to 3 m in width, maintains an average dip of 35¦SE, and contains significant gold grades (1000s g/t Au). Gold particles are often visible, with 25 per cent being greater than 250 microns in size. Variography using underground development samples indicates a nugget effect of about 75 per cent. For the 2005 resource estimate, a 2D metal accumulation ordinary kriged block model was used to produce a global grade for the Target and South Blocks of the Main Vein. Grade control chip-channel samples are collected from æshantyÆ drive footwalls, and used as the basis for both the kriged block model and to determine the grade of individual stope blocks by peripheral weighted averages. Geology plays a key role in mining efficiency, given the locally variable nature of the ore zone.

This paper describes studies into two particular aspects of the Lochiel deposit which formed part of feasibility level geot2chnical and hydrogeological investigations for proposed open cut mine development. The two aspects were depressurisation of thick beds of silt located through the profile and the determination of characteristics and origins of soil structure and their effect on pit stability. The studies were very detailed and multi disciplinary and highlight the integration of geology, geotechnics, hydrogeology and mining that is required for mine development studies. It is considered that as more marginal deposits are developed throughout the world the demands for efficient economic mining together with in- creasing scales of operation will require simi- lar types of studies. As such the studies pre- sented herein are likely to be a forerunner to a,emerging trend for development of open pit mines in difficult ground and water conditions.

Titaniferous magnetite deposits are a significant source of vanadium for use in high strength steel alloying and other chemical applications. The mineralogy of the deposits varies markedly and the ore characteristics strongly influence the process route selected and the metallurgical outcomes. Characterisation of the ores reveals the presence of magnetite, ilmenite and other minerals such as spinel hematite and goethite with variable degrees of weathering along with weathered products of host rock. The standard processing route is to crush, grind and magnetically recover a concentrate for salt roasting to produce a soluble vanadate. Ore beneficiation is practised to generate an iron based mineral concentrate containing much of the vanadium with low silica levels of two per cent. Typical processing problems encountered are fine liberation size, over grinding of the magnetite and variable response to magnetic separation resulting from the weathering profile. Beneficiation options are restricted, and generally focused on producing a combined iron and titanium rich concentrate containing vanadium due to the fact that ilmenite and magnetite and their products of weathering are magnetic and have similar specific gravities making their separation difficult. The ilmenite usually contains low levels of vanadium making its separation highly desirable from the iron mineralisation containing higher levels of vanadium. Salt roasting of vanadium ores followed by water leaching has been the standard processing route for many years. The cost of suitable sodium salts, availability of capital and increasing energy costs and energy availability are critical factors in determining the viability of aspiring vanadium producers. To date, only Windimurra has acquired full capital funding, secured energy and sodium salt supplies at suitable cost that enable the construction of the project. Low overall recoveries of vanadium to concentrate roasting at up to 1200¦C are critical cost issues. In this paper, factors influencing the recovery of vanadium are reviewed and emerging processing trends explored. The important features of the processing of titaniferous magnetites have been condensed from the literature, published works, company websites, our own work and personal communication.

The InLine Pressure Jig represents a breakthrough in digging technology Its design incorporates a unique combination of features previously utilised in conventional jig design. In particular, a moveable screen and circular bed are used to excellent effect. However, a major design innovation is the encapsulation of the circular bed within a vessel - allowing the equipment to operate under pressure. This innovation eliminates free water surface, improves the dynamics within the separation layer (crossflow) and provides significant cost savings in the handling of slurries. Blasting performance is directly related to the characteristics and efficiency of the explosives used. The selection of the correct explosive for particular blast conditions and objectives depends on the ability to characterise the performance of individual explosive products. Techniques have been developed by the JKMRC to measure explosive performance and assess the impact of explosive performance on blast results. Studies conducted at a number of mine sites have shown that different types of explosives perform quite differently and that the performance of any particular explosive can vary significantly. The principal causes of these variations have been identified and detailed blast monitoring techniques, including the analysis of muckpile fragmentation and shape, have been used to quantify the effects of explosive performance on blast Results.

ABSTRACT' The high gas emissions associated with coal extraction at some-Australian collieries have provided a need to investigate the methods used to predict these gas levels and the vent- ilation requirements for gas dilution. It is generally accepted that the introduction of longwall extraction in particular is associated with complex ventilation planning problems. These problems are made much more severe when the colliery introducing longwalls is already facing high gas emissions even during the development stages. A forecast of likely gas emissions during the longwall mining process indicated possible ventilation problems in maintaining the necessary ventilation levels to satisfy the statutory gas limitations for various production rates. Although there are sound principles used in world recognised methods of gas emission prediction a new approach developed from the findings of the Barbara Experimental Mine in Poland appears most suitable for Australian conditions. In the past ten years or so there has been a renewed interest worldwide in the processing of refractory gold ores. The Archean province of Western Australia contains both numerous and major gold deposits, and has a long history in the development and practise of treating refractory ores (eg Blaskett and Woodcock, 1953). Depletion of shallow oxidised ores in recent years has re-focused attention on deeper sulphidic ores, and as a consequence has renewed interest in treatment methods for those ores which are refractory. Mineralogical factors he at the heart of reasons as to why these ores are refractory, and are the key to designing and improving treatment options in the longer term. This paper presents an overview of mineralogical factors that are relevant to the processing of refractory gold ores in the Archean of Western Australia. It is based on a number of research projects and other work on a variety of gold deposits, mainly in the Eastern Goldfields region, carried out over the past five years or so.
