This paper describes a mobile laboratory developed specifically for nickel prospecting, and which was designed to be operated by sub-professional staff in remote areas independently of established laboratories. An atomic absorption spectrophotometric procedure was used to determine nickel, cobalt, lead, zinc, and copper ID latentIc and sulphIde samples, with a detection limit better than 25 µg/g for all elements. The procedure was applicable to both soil and drill samples and the accuracy of the procedure, which was ±5 per cent relative at the 1,000 µg/g level was sufficient for the preliminary assessment of mineralized samples and the control of drilling operations. The analytical procedure and the means taken to ensure the necessary reproductibility and accuracy are described. One operator can carry out 400 elemental determinations per 8-hr day at an approximate cdst of 6 cents per elemental determination. The results are returned within a single day, a factor which can contribute materially to the efficiency of drilling operations.

The design of the settling pond for the Malvern Hills opencast coal project was based on a primary requirement to control runoff and sediment generated from the immediate 6 ha mine catchment, which included two seepages from old underground workings. The pond has been particularly effective in controlling turbidity in the outflow water, with the consent limit of 50 NTU being met on all but one occasion and normal levels of discharge less than 10 NTU. Water quality testing carried out at the time of consenting indicated that there were no acid-generation issues with the proposed mine site in dominant mudstone strata of the Broken River Formation, and that water from the old mine workings was near-neutral in terms of pH and well-buffered. However, it became apparent over the very dry summer of 2003 - 2004 that slaking of the exposed mudrocks in the mine batters was resulting in significant acidity generation, and outflow pH levels were well below the consent limit of 6.5 during and following periods of rainfall. Although these acidity problems have been remediated in the short-term by the use of lime products, it is clear that a programme of lithotype characterisation for AMD should have been undertaken and this has now been implemented. Design of long-term acid drainage control measures is being carried out, and will probably be based around the use of hydrated lime for pH control with enhancement of natural wetlands.

The extra information brought by further drilling may seem necessary to achieve control over block grades if elementary estimation techniques are used. However a geostatistical study of an Australian deposit shows that better estimation techniques at the end of the first drilling campaign are sufficient to achieve required control.Subsequent drilling would be essentially wasteful.

The monthly tonnage extracted approximates 30,000 tons in normal times.The ore is a mixed sulphide containing galena and marmatite; the gangue minerals are principally calcite, rhodonite, quartz and garnet.A typical assay for a monthly period is 14·40/0 Pb., 5·6 ozs. Ag., and 11· 60/0 Zn. The whole of the ore is concentrated on the property by combined gravity and flotation methods. The lead and 'zinc concentrates produced are railed to other centres for the extraction of the contained metals.MINING METHODSMining practice throughout the field varies only in minor details. The ore-bodies forming the Broken Hill Lode lie within complex folds arranged along a shear and vary in size and mineralogical associations, but all the mines have similar types. Some of the ore-bodies have weak walls, but the chief difficulty in mining is caused by "heads" and "flaws" in the ore.Besides these local weak areas there are ground movements-referred to later-of varying magnitude extending throughout the central portion of the lode where the large ore-bodies, several hundred feet wide, approached the surface.

In the early stages of opening up a mine, when there is some uncertainty as to its future career, necessitating caution in laying out works of a permanent character, the want is often felt of an assay furnace, easily built and easy of transportation, should the" mine " prove to be " no mine." Again, cases occur in which parties buy the right to treat comparatively small heaps of tailings, and then shift their plant to other localities. Under these circumstances it is necessary to restrict the plant to the barest necessaries, to suit, so to speak, the nomadic character of the work.An assay furnace that is really portable, easily transported, erected, taken down, of little weight, always ready for action on short notice, is indeed in these cases a desideratum which has long been wished for. The gasoline furnaces introduced intothe Australian market some time since practically fulfil these conditions; but they have the fatal drawback of being dependent on a constant supply of the liquid fuel, gasoline, which is seldom, if ever, obtainable locally in' any wayback mining township...

The paper is a general review of practice in design of sub-level open stopes in Northern Rhodesian copper mines and gives examples of some interesting developments during the last five or six years. Small-scale mining operations are characterised by a large variety of equipment availability and a high level of operational flexibility. Mine planning is usually scarce or absent in small quarries in Brazil, and mine management generally focuses on daily operations. As a result, analysis of the effects of unit operations, such as blasting, over the whole mining process is often neglected. The goal of the following project was to study the effect of production blasting on loading and hauling times, secondary breaking times and primary crushing times at the Experimental Mine of the Research Center for Responsible Mining of the University of São Paulo, Brazil. The operations analysed included blasts that performed:under the average operational standard, defined in this paper as Case 1according to quarry standards, defined in this paper as Case 2.In order to establish the effects of blasting on the downstream process, three key performance indictors were used:The time taken to load the truck, when there is the need for material selection. Due to the fact that we do not have an operational baseline, the increase in time cannot be established, meaning that we must content ourselves with comparing the mean time in each scenario.The average time used for secondary breaking machinery.The time required for the primary crusher to fully process the load of a single truck. The results obtained indicate correlations between the coarseness of the blasted material and these operational times. Shaft sinking through an amphibolite-granite rock mass experienced rock bursts on the shaft walls and benches. However, rock burst phenomena was exhibited only in granite, which is e1asto-brittle with ability to store strain energy caused by orogenic and man made stresses. To improve ground conditions, blasting of destressing holes at shaft corners was carried out. By this technique rock burst during shaft sinking was minimized, but not eliminated.

Traditional kinematic and statistical analyses of geological structure for geotechnical engineering applications, while considered industry standard practice, have some limitations and unrealistic assumptions. An improved approach involves a discrete fracture network (DFN), a numerical model that explicitly represents how defects may be spatially distributed through the rock mass. The DFN technique utilises the structural data in stochastic analyses to give a range of possible models used for visualisation and stability analyses.The early development of the DFN approach was largely associated with modelling fractured hydrocarbon reservoirs and nuclear waste isolation programs. With recent improvements to computational power it has become recognised internationally as a valuable tool for modelling some geomechanical problems encountered when designing excavations in fractured rock masses. For tunnelling or slope stability projects DFN modelling provides visualisation of a rock mass and identification of likely failure mechanisms.This paper presents a suite of DFN modelling undertaken for the design of a tunnel within the Ashfield Shale unit of the Sydney Basin, Australia. The necessary input parameters and derivation of these, along with the importance of both an accurate engineering geology model and validation of the synthetic fracture network are demonstrated. Multiple realisations of the DFN were analysed to provide an indication of the number and volume of unstable blocks for the proposed tunnel geometry, enhancing support design. The objectives of this paper are to introduce the International Code of Practice for Risk Management of Tunnel Works and to illustrate to the participants of the 13th Australian Tunnelling Conference 2008 how the insurance industry would like to see the future of tunnelling insurance. Tunnel construction projects have suffered large losses over the years as can be shown from various loss examples and a list of major losses over the last ten to 15 years. Since the consequences of insufficient risk control had to be borne by insurers, these losses have heightened the need for improved and adequate risk management measures so that insurance cover can also in future be provided for this hazardous industry sector. Observations are made as regards to the prevailing trends in the tunnelling industry, which contribute to the increase in risk and have adverse consequences for the insurance industry. To find a solution to this dilemma various options are examined with the suggestion of a Joint Code of Practice for Tunnel Works being agreed by all stakeholders, which would become essential to secure future insurance protection for such project work. The British Tunnelling Society has, in cooperation with the Association of British Insurers, developed such a code, which the International Tunnelling Insurance Group has now adopted for global application in international markets. The content and concept of this code is explained to establish a framework of understanding and applied risk management principles for tunnel works. This initiative also has the support of the International Tunnelling Association and the International Association of Engineering Insurers. The international application of this new code is demonstrated with a few examples, which also includes Australian projects. It is the aim that this code forms in future part of the insurance coverage for tunnelling works in order to put this risk segment on a more sustainable basis. For that reason the insurance industry is seeking the support of all stakeholders of tunnelling construction projects.

The production of metallic titanium and titanium-rich alloys in forms useful to the engineer involves the use of certain techniques not usually necessary in fabricating the commoner metals and alloys. However, not all stages in the handling and shaping of titanium-base materials require the application of unfamiliar methods. It is the purpose of this paper to indicate where the well-known techniques are applicable as well as to outline the unusual operations which are necessitated by certain chemical characteristics of titanium.In brief, the characteristics just mentioned are manifestations of the very great reactivity of titanium, especially at elevated temperatures. Liquid titanium burns vigorously when brought into contact with air. It also reacts with practically all refractories, causing damage to the latter as well as undesirable contamination of the metal. Even solid titanium undergoes serious superficial contamination when heated above 800°C. in air for more than a few minutes. In addition to an oxide skin being formed, oxygen enters into solid solution in the surface of the metal causing the latter to become hardened and eventually embrittled.Up to date, titanium has been made only on a pilot plant scale by methods which produce a spongy or powdered product. Refractory problems have prevented the development of chemical reduction methods for making titanium in the form of a liquid pool from which ingots of useful size could be cast. Microaerobic biodegradation oflow-grade manganese dioxide slurry tailings was demonstrated in enrichment cultures treated with dilute molasses at 30°C and pH 5·8. Supplementary nitrogenous nutrients, yeast extract addition and pH adjustment were not required.Continuously stirred, air-limited reactors were superior to still intermittently agitated cultures, in that, at 5 per cent (w/v) MnOz tailings and 5 per cent (w/v) molasses, the yield of 0.12 g Mn++/g molasses, the rate ofleaching of 1·06 g Mn++/l/d and a recovery of Mn++ of 58 percent from MnOz were 2·8 times, 1·7 times and 1·9 times greater, respectively. The best compromise in yield (0·45 g Mn++/g molasses) and rate ofdissolution (0·73 gMn++/l/d) was at 1 per cent (w/v) molasses in a stirred reactor.Where leaching organisms were separated from sterile ore by a bacteria impermeable membrane leaching was shown to be some 20 per cent due to diffusible metabolites and 80 per cent due to a direct contact between the bacteria and the ore particle's surfaces.

The Calypso geothermal field, mapped by the R V Sonne (cruise SO-135) in 1998, includes four main sites, the Northern Vent Area (centred on 37¦ 36.7'S, 177¦ 06.2'E, area 1.5 km2), Central Vent Area (37¦ 39.4'S, 177¦ 05.2'E, 1 km2), Southern Vent Area (37¦ 41.7'S, 177¦ 06.0'E, 1 km2) and Mercury Vent Area (37¦ 41.3'S, 177¦ 07.3 'E, 0.5 km2). Hydrothermal activity at the vent sites is controlled by minor, sub-parallel NE-trending normal faults. Gas bubble trails (C02) and shimmering hot water vent from fractures and joints between large blocks of silicified volcaniclastics and in depressions in the sediments at the base of these outcrops. Measured maximum vent temperatures are between 180¦C and 201¦C. Venting fluids are at, or just below, boiling for water depths of 200 m. Rock samples recovered by dredge from the sites include massive anhydrite, clay-altered pumiceous ash, silicified volcaniclastic sediments and volcaniclastic breccias cemented by sulphur. Clay-altered samples, dominated by randomly interstratified illite-smectite and accessory chlorite, indicate formation environments of 70¦C to 90 ¦C. Native sulphur is abundant throughout the samples. Fine-grained (<1 mm) disseminated pyrite and vein pyrite occurs in the clay-altered pumiceous volcaniclastics and argillites. In the Southern and Mercury Vent Areas, fine-grained orpiment, realgar and cinnabar have deposited in the sandy matrix of volcaniclastic breccias. Amongst the cinnabar, small (<2 mm) beads of native Hg formed on the surface of several rocks following their recovery. These samples also contained abundant light hydrocarbons, which coat the rocks with an oily sheen.

Difficulties were experienced in the identification of carbonate minerals intimately associated with iron oxides in the so called carbonate ore, which occurs at depth in the Iron Duke Orebody.Determination of refractive indices by examination under the microscope using the immersion method, together with inferred chemical composition indicates that dolomite and parankerite are common constituents. Histograms of the manganese and sulphur contents strongly suggest that manganese is associated with the carbonate minerals, and that the highest sulphur assays occur near the base of the carbonate body.From the present work it is concluded that refractive indices indicate only a very approximate composition for carbonates of the parankerite type.The different carbonate minerals occur in irregular zones.INTRODUCTIONThe Iron Duke deposit is situated in the southern portion of the South Middleback Range on Eyre Peninsula, S.A., 30 miles from Whyalla. (Fig. 1).Drilling at Iron Duke revealed a large body of so called carbonate ore, which was tested in detail at cross section 1000 ft. S by three diamond drill holes, DDH.57, 67 and 78. (Fig. 2)Most specimens of carbonate ore described below were obtained from DDH 67 and 78.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe South Middleback Range is composed of two parallel ridges trending north-south. The Iron Duke orebody is situated on the southern portion of the western ridge. (Fig.1) .The rocks of these ranges belong to the Middleback Group which rests on a gneiss complex. Their age is considered to be Middle Precambrian or late Archaean.

The presence of undetonated explosives in a rock face after firing constitutes a hazard which can result in a fatal or serious accident if undetected before drilling commences.Most accidents caused by drilling into explosives are the result of failure to examine the working face properly and lack of care in subsequent drilling operations; it is not always realized that explosive may be left in the butts of holes or may be driven into cracks or crevices in the rock.Obviously the best means of preventing accidents of this nature is to adopt methods of drilling, charging and firing which will reduce the hazard to a minimum.There are three ways in which undetonated explosives may be left in the rock face, namely:1. Misfires.2. Cut-off shots.3. Incomplete detonation or failure of the charge to propagate throughout.MisfiresNo attempt will be made in this paper to deal fully with the question of the prevention of misfires, as apart from the fact that most of the preventive methods are well known, it is believed that if the miner receives his explosives and means of initiation in good order, and proper care is taken in their use, the failure of a charge to fire will be a rare occurrence. The provision of central fuse capping stations on mines has gone a long way towards the elimination of misfires caused by the mishandling of safety fuse anddetonators.

THE science of topography deals with the various natural and physical features of the earth's surface. These features are determined by the manifold constructive and destructive processes of nature, and their many diverse forms and characteristicsare dependent primarily upon geologic structure. Thus it is that a close relationship exists between the rocks of a region and the topographic features of the lJountry wherein they occur. When the first rush of miners took place on the Molyneux River, in the Dunstan Gorge, the gold was won by means of cradling the gravel, which was shovelled from the various beaches and crevices in the rock-bound sides of the river.The above method of winning the gold was only practicable when the beaches were not covered with water, hence the work was usually carried on during the winter months, the ordinary level of the river during spring and summer months being some ten or twelve feet above winter level. The melting of the spow in the Lakes water-shed being responsible for the high summer level of the river.As the available beaches were worked out, other methods of winning the gold were proposed and worked with more or less successful results the first advance being to work the bed of the river by means of a spoon dredge. The spoon was made with a round lip or ring of iron, having a steel cutting edge on one half of the circumference, at the opposite side a socket being forged to take a long spar or boom, which was securely fitted thereto. At intervals round the hoop, half-inch holes were bored to enable. a bullock-hide bag to be laced on to same. The spoon was worked from a pontoon which carried a crab winch, tackles and the necessary washing appliances to treat the washdirt lifted. In starting to dredge, a tackle was attached to near the upper end of the boom, and a line or chain was carried over a cat head from the crab winch...

Cracow is a high-grade; low-tonnage underground gold mine located approximately 500 km north-west of Brisbane in Central Queensland. It is a steeply dipping, narrow vein, epithermal gold and silver deposit that is accessed via a decline from surface. Cracow is owned by joint venture between Newcrest Mining (70 per cent) and Sedimentary Holdings (30 per cent). The orebodies are 5 m wide on average and the ore is extracted via sublevel open bench stoping. Stopes are extracted to a strike of approximately 25 m before being backfilled with waste. Prior to the introduction of electronics, the mine would remove a small amount of the previous backfill out to create a void, and then begin blasting two to three rings at a time, with the ore being extracted between each blast. This method caused the ore to be blasted onto the waste backfill resulting in dilution of the high-grade ore. It also meant that the extraction of each stope took a number of weeks and numerous blasting events. In the fourth quarter of 2005, the mine struck a geotechnically sensitive stope, where all 20 rings had to be extracted in a single shot or risk possible geotechnical problems that could sterilise the ore. Due to the limitations of NONEL« delay detonators the mine could not fire all the rings in a single shot and needed to use an electronic detonator system to extract the stope. Some unexpected benefits to the mine were increased fragmentation, reduced vibrations, reduced dilution, improved efficiency and improved hanging wall and footwall conditions. After the success of this first electronic shot, the mine has since moved to firing all their stopes with electronic detonators. With electronics the mine has been able to fire much larger blasts, and has in fact moved to firing their blasts in the opposite direction, firing towards the draw point instead of into the waste backfill, thus reducing ore dilution.

This paper briefly describes the shaft, including sinking, steel sets and their installation, shaft equipment and winders.INTRODUCTIONThe New Broken Hill Consolidated Ltd. Service Shaft is a vertical concrete-lined circular shaft, 20 ft. in diameter with -steel sets spaced at 12-ft. centres. The diameter of 20 ft. was established as the minimum that would enable the shaft both to house the proposed hoisting and service equipment and to satisfy ventilation requirements as a downcast airway. The 12-ft. set spacing was based on South African practice in similar types of shafts.The shaft extends from the surface to 28 ft. below No. 22 Level, a total depth of 3,194 ft. Sinking was commenced in September 1946, and equipping completed in January 1955. Initially the shaft was sunk and concrete-lined to a depth of 52 ft., using a stiff-legged crane and clam-shell grab for mucking. Operations were suspended at this depth to allow the installation of the steel sinking head-frame, winders and ancillary equipment.Sinking and concreting were recommenced after four months and continued to a depth of 1,035 ft. 6 in., where the shaft connected with a pilot opening. The concrete lining was poured as sinking progressed and was piped from the surface to this depth, after which all concrete was lowered in buckets and discharged through a distributor suspended in the shaft. A cycle of stripping to the pilot opening and concreting was continued until the shaft reached No. 22 Level. From this level the remaining 28 ft. was sunk full size. All plats were cut and concreted as sinking progressed.
