This paper discusses why Argyle Diamonds adopted thickened tailings disposal in 1985 and how the system was developed over the next seven years. A wide ranging review of the thickened tailings disposal system and the tailings deposit it was producing was carried out during 1992 and 1993. The results of that review led to the abandonment of thickened tailings disposal at Argyle because of serious concerns about the stability of the resultant tailings deposit. The exposure to the risk of liquefaction and an assessment of the consequences if this happened to the thickened tailings deposit are shown. The criteria for selecting the new tailings disposal strategy are then described. The final section of the paper discusses the management strategies that have been put in place. These are designed to: ò reduce the risk posed by the thickened tailings deposit to an acceptable level; ò safely store tailings to the end of mine life; ò produce a land form that can be decommissioned to the satisfaction of Government regulatory bodies.

This paper discusses cone penetration test correlations for loose gold tailings that were developed within a critical state soil mechanics framework. The development of a new calibration chamber for cone penetration testing that consists of a modified triaxial cell is described. Some of the early development and commissioning issues that were encountered, as well as the solutions adopted are outlined, including the system to prepare the samples and to acquire high-quality data from the testing. Also, the triaxial laboratory testing required to achieve the critical state line is described, including some of the basic precautions considered necessary as good practice. Additionally, the system adopted for volume tracking of the calibration chamber sample is described, which is essential for ensuring a reliable state parameter comparison against the acquired cone penetration test data. Finally, some laboratory test data from the calibration chamber is plotted against the soil behaviour type charts currently available from various authors.

THE method of stope surveying as practised at the Mount Lyell Company's mines has been evolved out of the exigencies created by special conditions. It presents some novel features, and has proved effective for all requirements. All stope measurement work is brought under one complete system, to which office methods are standardized. Before proceeding to deal with the subject a brief description of the physical characteristics of the ore-bodies of each mine and the method of stoping will serve to show, cause ,for departure from ordinary survey practice.NORTH LYELL MINEThe ore-bodies of this mine occur on or near the conglomerate schist contact, and, being probably the result of replacements of both rocks, they rarely present any definite walls. It is usual for the payable material to merge into the respective countryrocks, and the limit of the occurrence is defined rather by assay value than by any distinct natural boundaries. The general configuration of these ore-bodies, therefore, is highly erratic both in horizontal and vertical section, so that, in order to obtain an accurate record of any occurrence, the measurement of the actual contour at short vertical intervals is essential.Stoping is carried out on a modification of the "rill." system, perhaps more properly described as "arched back" or "dome" stoping. Mullock rises are placed in as convenient positions as the erratic configuration of each ore-body will allow, and aroundthese rises the back is kept well arched, both longitudinally and transversely. It is well known in the industry that good classification system performance is vital to efficient ball mill circuit performance. But what is meant by good classification system performance, and how is it achieved? Unfortunately, the perceived complexity of classification systems, and the day-to-day time demands placed on the practicing metallurgist, all too often put the low-hanging fruit of classification system optimisation in the ‘I’ll do it later’ basket. Additionally, lingering confusion about basics such as the relationship between circulating load ratio and ball mill circuit performance makes the optimisation objective seem nebulous to both plant metallurgist and designer.Some of this confusion can be eliminated by taking a step back from the overwhelming detail of sharpness of separation curves, circulating load ratios, cyclone feed pressures, vortex and apex sizes etc, and focusing on the purpose or function of the classification system – to apply mill power to particles that need further size reduction! The classification system efficiency (CSE) metric captures how well the classification system is performing its function with two quick and easy size distribution analyses.Once CSE is understood and implemented as the optimisation criteria, well-tested methods for improving CSE can be implemented and quickly measured at plant scale to give confidence that the right change was made.This paper will describe CSE and how it is measured in practice. Next, a guide for improving CSE through manipulation of design and operating variables in the classification system will be provided. The Peko copper orebody is associated with a body of magnetite rock which it has partly replaced. The primary ore averages about 9 per cent. copper and 4 dwt. gold per ton and locally IS much richer. It consists essentially of chalcopyrite and unreplaced magnetite, with lesser amounts of pyrite, marcasite, pyrrhotite, cobaltite, bismuthinite, native bismuth and native gold. The earliest formed mineral is wolfram, and the latest formed is goethite, so that the temperature of deposition ranged from about 5000 C. to 1650 C. or lower.Oxidation extends to 270 ft., which is 100 ft. below the present water level. The oxidized ore consists of cuprite and native copper, and has replaced more or less massive chalcocite of a former zone of secondary sulphide enrichment. The present zone of secondary sulphide enrichment extends from about 270 ft. to 310 ft. depth.INTRODUCTIONThe Peko mine is about 6 miles south-west of Tennant Creek township in the Northern Territory, adjacent to a small outcrop of hematite rock that projects above an otherwise featureless "bull-dust" fiat.The copper-gold orebody being developed in this mine did not outcrop. It was first detected in 1950 by a surface diamond-drill hole (DDH.1), which intersected primary copper ore at a depth of 400 to 425 ft. This ore contained from 4 to 11 per cent. copper and 1 to 25 dwt. gold per ton. Since then a shaft has been sunk, and crosscuts and development drives have been opened on the 210..ft., 300-ft. and 400-ft. levels, which are also connected by winzes. Two diamond drill holes sunk from the 400-ft. level have intersected theorebody at about 450 to 460 ft., and a winze from the 400-ft. level intersected the lode from 445 to 500 ft. At this point it is 54 ft. wide, and averages 9 per cent. copper. More recently an inclined surface drill hole (Peko No. 1) has cut the lode at 856 ft. to 921 ft., equivalent to a vertical depth...

The purpose of this research was to study the calcination of lead-zinc flotation tailings from the Angouran lead and zinc flotation plant in Iran as a pre-concentration step prior to hydrometallurgical processing of the oxidised tailings. There is an abundance of these tailings in the Angouran region and making use of these tailings would help preserve national wealth and also reduce the serious problems of environmental pollution caused by the tailings. At the optimal conditions of calcining at 750 - 800¦C for 45 minutes, the sample showed a mass loss of about 19 per cent. Mineralogical analyses showed that under these conditions the carbonate minerals including smithsonite (ZnCO3), calcite (CaCO3) and dolomite (Ca Mg (CO3)2) decomposed to their respective oxides. Hemimorphite (Zn4Si2O7 (OH)2.H2O) converted into willemite (Zn2SiO4) and this transformation postponed the formation of silica gel in the leach solution. The grade of zinc increased from 22.20 per cent to 29 per cent. These mineralogical changes resulted in desirable reactions in the acid leach process.

Serious exploration for carbonate-hosted lead/zinc deposits in the Pillara district commenced in 1971 when Trend Exploration acquired exploration tenements covering stream sediment anomalies in the Limestone Billy Hills area. Shell Minerals managed the project from 1974 to 1976, and BHP Minerals Limited assumed management during 1976. Carbonate-hosted 'Mississippi-Valley- type' Pb-Zn deposits most commonly occur in Palaeozoic shallow marine carbonate complexes. At Pillara upper Devonian (Givetian/Frasnian) reef complexes are preserved on the flanks of Precambrian basement 'highs'. Within platform and atoll facies limestones sphalerite-galena- marcasite-calcite mineralisation occurs as disseminations, veins and breccia matrix, mostly associated with fractures and fault zones. Early exploration concentrated on detailed surface geochemistry and IP geophysical surveys, with geological mapping and shallow target percussion and diamond drilling. Results were discouraging and did not indicate potential for a shallow base metal resource. During 1976-77 BHP adopted a grid diamond drilling exploration technique and commenced testing an area of approximately 50 sq. km, initially using an 800 m square grid. In 1978 high grade mineralisation was intersected in an area subsequently named Blendevale. This was in the seventh diamond drill hole in the 800 m grid drilling programme, and to date more than 400 holes have been cored in the Pillara area. Detailed drilling at Blendevale has defined a number of mineralised breccia zones within an area of 2.4 km x 0.5 km, at depths of 100 m to 600 m below surface. The breccia bodies are associated with a series of north-south trending normal fault zones, forming a graben structure. The Boddington Gold Mine (BGM) is managed by Worsley Alumina Pty Ltd (Worsley) and is located 110 km south-east of Perth, Western Australia. The gold mine, which has operated since mid-1987, was originally constructed to treat 3 Mtpa of gold bearing oxide ores, has subsequently been expanded to treat 7 Mtpa and is presently one of the largest gold producing operations in Australia.During 1990 a Supergene/Basement Plant was constructed to treat 250 000 tpa of copper supergene and hypogene ores and basement ores which contain significant gold grades and which are encountered at the lower levels of the existing oxide orebody. The SupergeneBasement Plant has the versatility to treat a wide range of ore types, producing both gold bullion and copper-gold concentrates. It is a stand-alone facility adjacent to the existing 7 Mtpa gold plant.

The Bureau of Mineral Resources has been engaged in regional geological and geophysical field work in the Alligator River and Cobourg Peninsula area since 1971, following the discovery of major uranium deposits. Geophysical work commenced with a regional airborne magnetic and radiometric survey which was followed up by some helicopter and ground work in August 1973. The interpretation of the earlier radiometric work is presented in conjunction with the results obtained from the follow-up work. Analyses of 100 outcrop and drill core samples collected have provided basic information on the physical properties and concentrations of uranium and thorium in various rock types. The uranium determinations were made by X-ray fluorescence and delayed neutron analysis, good agreement being obtained between the two methods. X-ray fluorescence was the main analytical technique used because of its ability to produce both uranium and thorium determinations.

The variability of gold mineralization in the Warrego Gold Pod is described by classical statistical techniques using sample distrib- utions and analysis of variance; and by the use of geostatistical variogram analysis to define the spatial variability and anisotropy of the mineralization. Comparison is made between declared mine production from the Nineteen Stope and a series of ore reserve estimates derived by manual, numerical and disjunctive kriging methods.

Since the 1950's drilling has been rapidly mechanised. First from hand held drills with air legs to pneumatic jumbos, then to more effective hydraulic jumbos. Development of underground drilling equipment naturally could not have stopped here. Hydraulic drilling saw an improvement in drilling capacity and efficiency after the introduction of second generation drifters in the early 1980's. Also in the early 1980's a few equipment suppliers started to study how to improve the efficiency in operating the rigs. The first computerised rigs for tunnelling were delivered to work sites in mid 1980's. At the same time a few computerised longhole drills started drilling in mines.

The banded iron formation-hosted iron ore deposits located in the Hamersley Ranges of Western Australia contain marker shales that are used to distinguish lithology for geological and orebody mapping. These marker shales produce distinctive signatures in the natural gamma downhole logs, which are conventionally manually interpreted. This paper proposes an alternative method of automatically identifying these shales using dynamic time warping (DTW). A Gaussian processes (GPs)-based method for automatic identification is also considered. Both methods are tested on a deposit that contains the Marra Mamba sequence of the Hamersley Province.Both methods were trained to predict the location of the desired shales, and the resulting outputs were compared with a manual interpretation of the results to determine the accuracy. The GP method can identify signatures with an accuracy between 87.0 per cent and 92.0 per cent, which increases to 92.9 per cent and 95.7 per cent where the GP is certain. The DTW method has an accuracy between 90.0 per cent and 91.6 per cent, which increases to 94.0 per cent and 95.4 per cent where the DTW is certain.The GP method has several advantages, including a more automated library building process, a probabilistic output and a shorter run time. However, the DTW method was capable of accepting more distortion in the signature and therefore identified more signatures. This is important in a deposit where the signals are frequently distorted by events such as hydration and folding. Both methods provide a viable alternative to the current manual detection, but their differences make them applicable to different cases.CITATION:Silversides, K and Melkumyan, A, 2014. Among countries afflicted with insLantaneous outbursts of coal and gas, Australia is noteworthy because of lesser disturbances of the seams and of the occurrence of CO2 in the seam gas from place to place. Research sLarted with the 1954 occurrences at Collinsville and Metropolitan Collieries leading to early publications reviewing the problem, describing occurrences and assessing variations in proneness factors in the two affected coal basins.The basic requirements for proneness include coals of high gas sorptive capacity, high ground stress, use of a mining method which provides higher stress concentrations and limits emission of seam gas, including high rates of advance. With CO2 in the seam gas proneness is greater.The mechanism is complex and not fully understood, but involves the coal, the roof, the floor, the gas, the mine opening, the ventilation, the kind of work and the rate of work. Geological disturbances such as faults and dykes increase proneness and tend to localise occurrences. On-occurrence of outbursts in some mines is difficult to explain.Outbursts are seen as a continuing threat to modem deep Australian mining of high rank coal.The simplest contributory factor to reduce is gassiness - despite the low permeability of outbursting coals - and present practices are showing promise. The greatest challenges for the future are partial degasification to below a known threshold figure and confirmation that this reduction is achieved and identification of anomalous geological structures ahead, the most likely locations for instantaneous outbursts to occur. The advances made to date give promise of a future with reducing experiences of uncontrolled instantaneous outbursts. For the Bulli seam particularly, working to achieve prediction and prevention is most urgent.

The porphyry copper minerals of Melanesia occur within a host of narrow veinlets in predominantly quartz diorite stocks or as contact metasomatic masses in skarns adjacent to the intrusion. Some 90 per cent of the constituent minerals comprise pyrite or marcasite, chalcopyrite, and magnetite with the remainder mainly bornite and hematite with accessory rutile and chalcocite together with several trace minerals. Gold is found mainly as inclusions in chalcopyrite, and minor molybdenite occurs likewise.Of particular significance is the persistent occurrence of accessory rutile of hydrothermal origin intimately intergrown with chalcopyrite. The rutile occurs relatively late in the hydrothermal sequence and upon weathering of the deposit may be released on a cumulative basis possibly in sufficient amounts to constitute a particulate pathfinder mineral which may aid in prospecting.Rutile is present in all the Melanesian occurrences studied and is also prominent in several American deposits.The porphyry copper mineralogy is characterized by the presence of accessory hydrothermal rutile intergrown with chalcopyrite.

A study was carried out to compare the environmental impacts of the two major iron ore agglomeration processes, sintering and pelletising, using life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology. The following agglomeration processing routes, with the fuel options shown, were investigated:sintering with combined natural gas/coke breeze or charcoal as fuel, grate-kiln pelletising with combined natural gas/coke breeze as fuel, and straight-grate pelletising with combined natural gas/coke breeze as fuel. Inventory data for each process derived from the literature, and in some instances supplemented by additional simulations and calculations, were used in the study and the environmental impact categories considered were gross energy requirement (GER), global warming potential (GWP) and acidification potential (AP). The results of the study showed that the GER, GWP and AP for a sinter plant are higher than those for a pellet plant for the same amount of metallic iron in the agglomerated products. These results are partly due to higher consumption of solid fuel and flux in the sintering process. However, it should be pointed out that the study only compared substantially fluxed sinters with acid pellets that may require additional flux (and hence potentially more greenhouse gases emissions) to be a balanced blast furnace feedstock. Extending the LCA to the blast furnace process stage was beyond the scope of the current study. Within the sinter plant, the sintering stage itself is the largest contributor to the GER, GWP and AP. In the case of pellet plant, the pellet induration stage is the largest contributor to the various environmental impacts. The GER and GWP of a straight-grate pellet plant are marginally higher than those of a grate-kiln pellet plant due to the higher electrical power required by the straight grate system. The substitution of coke breeze with charcoal in the sintering process results in an increase in GER but a decrease in GWP. However, a substantial proportion of the GER is derived from renewable sources (wood), resulting in a decrease in the non-renewable components of this environmental impact. Given the source of the inventory data and the assumptions and approximations made in carrying out the LCAs, it is emphasised that the results presented in this paper should be considered as indicative rather than as definitive results for the two iron ore agglomeration processing routes considered.

This study is to compare reinforcement of rebar and spiral bolts using laboratory pull-out test. For this purpose, the pull-out test was performed in laboratory for a curing period of 7- and 28-days. Based on the results of the laboratory pull-out test, the pull-out load of two support members rapidly increased with displacement until the breakpoint and then gently increased with displacement. The maximum pull-out load of spiral bolt was larger than that of rebar bolt. This implies that a spiral bolt is more stable than a rebar bolt for securing the stability of a ground or rock mass when a support was installed in a ground or rock mass under the same condition. In addition, the maximum external pressure of two support members increased with pull-out load and with displacement and the distribution of external pressure was commonly larger at the upper part than at the lower part of specimen. This indicates that the bond failure location by pull-out load should be mainly occurred at the surface portion of specimen. In conclusion, the reinforcing effect of a support depends on a curing period and a type of support member, and reinforcement of a spiral bolt is more effective than that of a rebar bolt.

The McArthur lead-zinc-silver deposit is of the stratiform type. It consists essentially of a mineralized bituminous shale sequence that incorporates tuffites, numerous graded beds, and isolated but massive slump breccia horizons.The principal sulphides are' pyrite, sphalerite, and galena. These occur mostly in the shales. The accompanying turbidites contain only minor mineralization.The geochemistry of the deposit has been investigated in relation to the stratigraphic column and mineralogy of the sediments.A sedimentary origin is proposed for the deposit. Volcanism, thermal spring activity, salinity, regional faulting, and climate are examined as possible factors that may have contributed to sulphide formation and which could be used as criteria for mineral exploration.The metallurgy 'of the McArthur deposit is discussed in terms of its geological history.

In submitting the accompanying sketch and description, the writer mentions that he has found this "gadget" a useful assay office adjunct.He believes that some millmen and assayers have been confronted, from time to time, with large samples of mill pulp for assay purposes and that although the commonly used method of coning and quartering dry sample is simple and effective, provided the samples are of reasonable proportion, the operator is frequently confronted with samples of pulp, sometimes up to 50 gallons. The writer stresses the advantage of being able to handle these samples. This fact inspired the design of the "gadget,"which was developed at the Kalgoorlie State Battery and has been found to give very reliable results. It has considerably eased the work of the assay office.Description. - A cone of suitable dimensions according to requirements (this one is about six gallons' capacity) is mounted on a light angle-iron frame and has a small hand-operated agitator paddle let into it far mixing purposes. The agitator and head frame are removable to facilitate cleaning. Four outlet pipes at the bottom at right angles to each other are controlled with one common plug, externally operated for discharging the pulp.Each operation of the machine delivers four equal parts; one or more of these can be used for further division as conditions require. The eastern third of Australia contains an unrivalled Phanerozoic rock record generated by the regional interaction of Gondwanaland with the Pacific and by the global effect of the 400 m.y. Pangaea - Panthalassa cycle. Between the latest Proterozoic (600 Ma) breakup of Proto-Pangaea and the mid-Carboniferous coalescence of the dispersed continents in Pangaea, the Lachlan and Thomson Foldbelts accreted to the craton by Mariana-type (backarc basin) and Chilean-type (continental margin) subduction from eastward jumps of the Palaeo- Pacific rim. Further jumps of the rim of the Permian and Mesozoic Pacific, now expanded to Panthalassa, accreted the New England Foldbelt to the craton. An Early Permian rift basin was succeeded by a Late Permian to mid-Triassic foreland basin which extended between the craton and the foldbelt behind the 10000 km Panthalassan rim, from the Bowen Basin of Queensland to South America, and was host to the productive coal measures of eastern Australia, as the succeeding Jurassic and Early Cretaceous foreland and epicratonic basins included the coal measures, hydrocarbon reservoirs, and aquifers of the Great Artesian Basin. The magmatic arc on the Australian margin ended after the mid-Cretaceous uplift along the Queensland coast that initiated southwestward drainage from the high Pacific rim. The Chilean-type subduction that had prevailed since the Devonian was superseded shortly afterwards by Mariana-type subduction with the successive generation of the back-arc basins of the Tasman Sea, Coral Sea, and other southwest Pacific basins by the migration of the island arc to its present position 2500 km eastward of Australia.

Ever increasing depth of mineral extraction presents a challenging environment for hard rock underground mines. High in situ stresses and associated seismicity with potential rock burst hazards are the major decisive factors contributing to the choice of a ground support regime. Conventional ground support systems, designed primarily for static loads, are not always capable of providing safe working conditions for underground personnel in seismically active mines. Systems specifically developed to resist dynamic loading and allowing for larger deformations are therefore preferred alternatives. High-tensile chain-link mesh has a proven record of successful use in open cut operations in various rockfall barrier installations due to its high energy absorption capacity. It has also been used in underground operations in various parts of the world. Its application in Australian underground mining, however, is limited due to the high labour intensity. This paper describes a method of mechanised installation of a chain-link mesh as trialled at Golden Grove, a base metals underground mine in Western Australia. A purpose-built mechanised roll mesh handler, developed in Australia, was used in this trial. The handler is compatible with all standard multi-boom underground drill rigs and is operated utilising the hydraulic circuit normally used for the feed arrangement.A number of operational benefits have been identified during the trial, the main two being:•improved safety of underground personnel due to the reduced amount of manual handling, and•increased productivity due to the decreased cycle time (the trial suggests a 40 - 50 per cent reduction in time over the weld mesh installation method).Although the energy-absorbing mesh combined with yielding rock bolts is a ground support system of choice for rock burst prone conditions, the operational upsides recognised during the trial imply that this product can also be competitively used in less demanding ground conditions where customarily weld mesh or shotcrete are used as a primary surface support.
