Bioremediation of Acid Mine Water Using Fly Ash and Desulfotomaculum nigrificans One of the major concerns for the mining industry especially after the mine closure is the generation of acid mine drainage (AMD), and its discharge into the environment surrounding the abandoned mines, leading to serious environmental pollution. AMD is usually characterized by high concentration of dissolved metal ions, sulfate and low pH. The efficacy of fly ash was assessed for the removal of metal ions such as iron, zinc and copper as well as sulfate from synthetic acid mine water. Complete removal of ferric and ferrous, 80 per cent of Zn, 83 per cent of Cu and 62 per cent sulfate removal could be achieved, with a concomitant increase in the pH value from 2.3 to 7 using fly ash as an adsorbent under appropriate conditions. The free energy of adsorption of the metal ions onto fly ash was found to be negative, while the adsorption process was endothermic and adhered to the Lagergren pseudo-first order rate equation. Bioremediation studies using a typical sulfate reducing bacterium namely Desulfotomaculum nigrificans, after pre-treatment of the synthetic acid mine water with fly ash, cumulatively resulted in about 94 per cent zinc, 100 per cent copper and 90 per cent sulfate removal. The possible mechanisms of metal ion removal and sulfate reduction from acid mine water utilising Desulfotomaculum nigrificans are discussed.

On the first of October 1991 two significant pieces of legislation came into force. Both of these are relevant to the allocation and use of minerals in New Zealand . They are the Crown Minerals Act 1991 and the Resource Management Act 1991.   The full legal implications of these is not fully known because the Planning Tribunal and the superior courts have not as yet had to deal with them in any detail. However, the thrust of the legislation is clear and it is appropriate to give an overview of how the statutes will operate in tandem if you are seeking to pursue or oppose any prospect, exploration or mining of Crown Minerals in New Zealand.

Laboratory batch rod and ball milling tests were conducted on samples of Heavy Medium Separator (HMS) sinks from Renison Limited. The effects of mill rotation speed, rod volume and ball size on the resulting product size distribution were investigated. Between 48 and 69 per cent of critical speed, the product sizing distribution curves remained very similar, with a finer grind resulting from increasing the speed of rotation at constant grind time. Increasing the rod loading from ten to 53 per cent by volume caused the product size to become finer and more closely sized with a transition occurring at approximately 29 per cent. This was interpreted as a change of dominant grinding mechanism from abrasion to impact. No preferential grinding of the cassiterite was observed. The effect of increasing ball size at constant charge weight was to preferentially grind the coarser particles and generate more intermediate sized particles, whereas the product from a mixed ball charge gave a distribution similar to that obtained when a charge containing only smaller balls was used.

In most surface mining operations, overall project economics is driven to a significant extent by the slope angles that can be achieved within the rock masses present. This is particularly true of precious metal pits in which stripping ratios can be relatively high, although examples from other non-precious metal operations (such as large iron ore and copper pits) can also be found. As a consequence, it is not surprising that in most large (deep) open pit mines, relatively small changes in slope angle (of the order of two or three degrees can translate into changes in project value measured in the tens or even hundreds of millions of dollars. Understanding how this potential value can be realised, and quantifying the associated risks, should be one of the key outcomes of modern slope engineering practice. In striving for optimised slope angles, therefore, mining companies and their specialist consultants are increasingly turning to more sophisticated methods of engineering open pit walls. This paper summarises contemporary slope engineering practice as well as some of the key technical issues that are either currently being researched or will need to be researched in the future. It is written in the context of the slope engineering process; namely, data collection and analysis, failure mode identification and stability assessment, slope design, slope formation, and slope (face) mapping and monitoring (the latter two activities being the primary on-going data collection functions that close the design loop).

Managing heat stress on Australian mine sites is a complex and enduring challenge due to the combined and variable contribution of environmental conditions, physical activities, and protective equipment. Inappropriately managed, heat stress can place significant physical strain on workers, leading to serious and chronic health issues. Additionally, excessive heat stress can dramatically reduce productivity, with 30 per cent of workers reporting a loss of productivity due to occupational heat strain. In Australia, due to increased absenteeism and reduced work performance, heat strain is estimated to have an annual economic burden of over $8 billion.

The extent to which man's activities are influencing the earth's climate is subject to considerable debate. Internationally however, this debate has been put aside somewhat by the Kyoto Protocol. This international agreement is the political response to the threat of Global warming, predicated on the precautionary principle.NZ is seeking to be a leader in the Kyoto Protocol. Given our unique GHG emission profile and the structure of our economy, and the major uncertainties in both the science of climate change and the Kyoto Protocol itself, this desire to lead is absolutely inappropriate in this instance. We face a different, and often more severe, set of challenges in an economy that prices C emissions than virtually all of our trading partners. Unfortunately, these differences have not been reflected in climate change policy development to date. This represents a major threat to New Zealand's economy, wealth and jobs, particularly in the sectors that have been the core drivers of our economy over the last 20 years or so - agriculture, energy, primary processing. We do not, and should not, seek to avoid the issue but we must protect our economy and move with or follow our trading partners and competitors, not lead them.

Regulations on the emission of particulates from sinter plant stacks are becoming increasingly stringent and reducing these emissions by improving gas cleaning systems is a significant cost to the sinter plants. This paper describes an investigation into the emission of particulate matter from an iron ore sinter bed during the sintering of a Japanese Steel Mill (JSM) style ore blend in a 300 mm diameter pot grate test facility. Several techniques were trialled to determine a reliable method to sample the quantity of dust emitted and determine the mechanism of dust emission from the sinter bed. The nature of the dust was also examined using chemical and size analysis as well as optical and scanning electron microscopy. The paper discusses the techniques used to carry out the program as well as results on dust loading measured during sintering and the nature of the dust captured.

Geological Parameters Controlling the Improvement of Manufactured Sand Using Vertical Shaft Impact Crushers Instead of Cone Crushers Natural sand is a limited resource. In Sweden the total use of natural sand and gravel is around 20 million tonnes per year and the goal is to halve the use of this resource in the near future. Most of this natural sand is used for concrete production, so the consequence of this goal is that more and more concrete must be produced with manufactured sand. The bedrock of Sweden consists mainly of granites and gneisses, rock types mainly composed of various amounts of quartz, feldspar and mica. Manufactured sand from these materials generally contains rather flaky and elongated grains, and there are few types of granite that can be used as manufactured sand in concrete without increasing the amount of cement by eight to ten per cent. A Vertical Shaft Impact crusher (VSI) is commonly used to improve the shape of coarse aggregate particles. Research has shown that it is even possible to improve the shape in aggregate fractions less than 1 mm for some rock types. The aim of this project was to investigate which geological parameters control the improvement of manufactured sand when using VSI-crushers instead of the traditionally used cone crusher. In order to do this eight rock types of granitic composition were investigated. The selection of rock materials for the tests was based on grain size and mica content. A 4 - 8 mm fraction of each material was used for the tests. The characterisation of the shape of the material was performed using image analysis applied on microscopic images. The results showed that the VSI-crusher had improved the shape of all materials down to 0.036 mm, except for one rock sample. According to these results granites with low mica content and relatively high content of feldspars have the best prerequisites to produce manufactured sand for concrete with suitable geometric characteristics, and if these materials are crushed with a VSI crusher they almost show the same characteristics as natural sand.

A simulation and animation model was constructed for the Stockton Coal Mine. This mine is located in the north western area of the South Island of New Zealand. This model was used to study the optimum size of the stockpile areas whilst achieving the correct product coal qualities. The model evaluated the impact on stockpile size and product coal qualities for both bulk and selective mining. The effect of modifying the amount of known clean coal quality was also investigated. The software used was GPSS/H« for the simulation and Proof Professional« for the animation. From the study, it was recommended to incorporate selective mining in future studies. The shipping plan needed to be modified for a better correlation between coal production levels, in situ coal resources and wash plant capacity.

Good morning and thanks for the chance to talk to you. It's really pleasing to see so many industry representatives here I want to spend a few minutes talking about issues relating to your industry. At the end of today I would like to leave you with three strong messages from government. The first is that this government supports environmentally responsible mining and the endeavours of the mining industry. The second is that explorers and developers are wanted and welcomed in New Zealand. And the last is that it is up to the industry to keep the public properly informed about how your industry and to constantly work on improving your public image. The mining industry is a high-tech industry which fits snugly with our concept of a growing knowledge-based economy. It has particular value for regional development, the gold mining industry alone provides more than 4,000 jobs û mostly outside of the main cities. The industrial minerals industry is twice as large as that. As well as those people directly employed by the industry there are greater downstream effects for the community. One example from the broader extraction industry of this is of the local pie shop down the road from one of Taranaki's petroleum industry locations. The shop sells over $4,000 worth of pies a week to workers in the industry. That's just one example of the positive benefits the industry brings to its local community and is the sort of real positive benefit you need to be telling people about

It has been thought in the past that New Zealand had ample coal reserves, able to provide fossil fuel supplies well into the future. Such is not the case and every effort must be made to achieve the highest possible extraction rate in all new coal mining ventures. While the relative cost and availability of completion or fuels has been largely responsible for the slow growth of coal production in the past, a world shortage of fuels has given coal a new importance and required better utilisation of coal reserves. New mining ventures in thick-seam coal deposits cannot be planned and designed without geotechnical investigations designed to provide information required by the mining engineer and analyst. Finite element analysis of mine workings may provide essential information on the optimisation of mining techniques and the design of underground support and roadway shapes.

The distribution ratio of Pb (LPb s/m) between three types of slags (FeOx–SiO2, CaO–FeOx and FeOx– CaO–SiO2) and molten copper after equilibrium was measured at 1300°C and oxygen partial pressure (pO2) of 10-10–10-6 atm. Results showed that for FeOx–SiO2 slag, the LPb s/m increased from 0.024 to 2.57 with pO2 increased from 10-10 to 10-6 atm. The LPb s/m with CaO–FeOx slag was lower than the FeOx–SiO2 slag at the same pO2, ranging between 0.015 and 0.53. Using the FeOx–CaO– SiO2 slag generated LPb s/m values (0.02–1.6) in between. The oxygen partial pressure in the investigated range had no obvious effect on the activity coefficient of PbO (γPbO) which was averagely 0.44, 1.70 and 0.71 for FeOx–SiO2, CaO–FeOx and FeOx–CaO–SiO2 slags, respectively. The increases in the (CaO+MgO)/SiO2 mass ratio of the FeOx–CaO–SiO2 slag induced the decrease in the LPb s/m and the increase in the γPbO value. However, the variation in the Fe/SiO2 mass ratio didn’t exert obvious effects.

In August 2001 the Minister for Conservation declined an application by GRD Macraes for an access arrangement to enable work at the Globe Progress Mine near Reefton. In her decision, Ms Lee said:æI have considered whether potential compensation and the proposed safeguards against some of the adverse effects are sufficient to outweigh my concerns as to the loss of conservation values, consistency with the objectives of the Conservation Act, the purposes for which the land is held by the Crown and, to a lesser extent, the North Westland Regional Management Plan. I do not think they are sufficient. To my mind, my concerns as to the consistency with the objectives of the Conservation Act, the purposes for which the land is held and the loss of some conservation values in particular, outweigh any potential compensation and possible mitigation of adverse effects.Æ Commenting on the MinisterÆs decision Guy Salmon of the Ecological Foundation stated that the Minister should have invited the applicant to provide a 10 000 hectare pest-free wildlife sanctuary as part of the æpriceÆ for obtaining that access. However,æfor many people of green persuasion, it has become fashionable to say no every timeàthose who really have the well-being of the environment at heart, will want to look carefully at the bigger picture of environmental restoration needsàThe deciding criterion: the mining company should show that its involvement on conservation land would produce a net conservation gain. That is a criterion that creates the right incentives for win-win-win solutions on conservation land.ÆThis paper considers whether the concept of off site mitigation is one which fits within the current legal regime. Two questions arise:Can such mitigation/compensation be legally considered in access arrangements or required as a condition of resource consents? Is this a realistic option for industry to be pursuing?

A new high intensity flotation process FASTFLOT was deployed to recover residual zinc from the zinc circuit tailings at Pasminco Mining's Concentrator, Broken Hill. Performance of the FASTFLOT process is discussed with respect to various size fractions. Results suggest that the process has an affinity not only for fine particles but also for +200 ¦m particles which the conventional flotation cells failed to recover. Various strategies for FASTFLOT deployment are also discussed.

The flow of information, and consequently the decision-making along the chain of mining from exploration to beneficiation, typically occurs in a discontinuous fashion over long timespans. In addition, due to the uncertain nature of the knowledge about deposits and the inherent spatial distribution of material characteristics, actual production performance often deviates from expectations. Reconciliation exercises to adjust mineral resource and reserve models and planning assumptions are performed with timely lags of weeks, months or even years.The key concept of real-time mining promotes a change in paradigm from discontinuous intermittent process monitoring to a continuous process and quality management system in the resource extraction process. The framework includes a real-time feedback control loop that rapidly links online data acquired during extraction at the mining face, material handling and processing with a sequentially updatable resource model. This will allow near real-time optimisation of decisions related to long-term planning, short-term sequencing and production control.The proposed framework integrates the following building blocks in a holistic manner: automated sensor-based material characterisationonline machine performance measurementsunderground navigation and positioningunderground mining system simulation and optimisation of planning decisionsupdating techniques for resource/reserve models.This paper introduces the real-time mining concept and the building blocks and provides a review of the state-of-the-art. Technological readiness of necessary building blocks is assessed, and critical gaps for further technology development are identified. The growth of "Unit Load-cargo handling technology in world cargo lin- er trades over the last decade has cre- ated a situation in which special pur- pose-vessels (cellular container ships, roll-on/roll-off vehicle deck ships and Lash type vessels) are rapidly replac- ing conventional cargo ships, the principal means previously available for transporting heavy lifts. Consequently heavy lift traffic has tended to accumulate awaiting ship- ment, especially where discharge is required in "off beat" locations. A partial solution to this problem will be provided by new and small but exceptionally versatile ocean going heavy lift carriers now finding their way into world trade routes. These new ships combine extremely high lifting capacity, high manoeuvreability and exceptionally shallow draft with bow and stern Ro/Ro capability. They can handle rolling loads of exceptional size and weighing up to 1,000 tons Each. But the problem is a far larger and more serious but essentially a domestic one. Major industrial pro- jects in Australia will require pro- gressively heavier and larger plant and construction sites are becoming much more inaccessible. Whereas these new ocean going heavy lift carriers have ample capacity to satisfy part of the total transport requirement, there is clear evidence to show that domestic transport resources have little if any potential for increase in capability at the same rate as demand or at the same rate as sea transport facilities. Resolution of the larger problem is within reach but only through a pro- perly co-ordinated approach to future planning for the overall needs of large scale projects on a national basis. This co-ordinated approach must involve Federal and State government transport administrators, railway and highway authorities, shipping and road haulage interests and finally the planners of the projects which require these improved heavy haulage services.

Discrete element modelling (DEM) is a research tool that involves numerically solving the equations of motion of large numbers of particles. It can be very useful for investigating mechanisms that can lead to bias when extracting samples from material as it is carried on a conveyor belt or as it falls from the end of a conveyor belt. DEM is more realistic than conceptual models and mathematical models; but it is not as realistic as physical experimentation. Its primary advantages over physical experimentation are that it is cheaper and that it allows many factors to be varied while keeping other factors unchanged.This paper reviews our investigations of the performance of sampling systems by using DEM. The sampling systems investigated include falling-stream cutters, cross-belt cutters, Vezins and a device called a ætrue-beltÆ cutter, which is being developed. The Department of Mineral Resources is the lead agency in mine site environment management and control inNew South Wales. The Department introduced a Mining, Rehabilitation and Environmental Management Plan (MREMP) process several years ago in order to integrate the activities of other government agencies who may have a material interest at the mine site. The MREMP process has resulted in a spirit of trust and co-operation between agencies and between agencies and mining companies. The spirit of co-operation has been reflected in greater public confidence that mining is environmentally responsible.
