The next generation of integrated circuits will probably include circuits constructed in and of GaAs. The existence of both semi-insulating and semiconducting forms of GaAs is the fact which will bring this about. In this paper we discuss the uses and limitations of semi-insulating GaAs for integrated-circuit applications. The two main areas considered are the electrical isolation that can be achieved between components on a semi-insulating substrate and the characteristics of p-n junctions in contact with semi-insulating GclAs. A process basic to attaining integrated circuits in GaAs to fully utilize the insulating properties of the substrate is selective epitaxial deposition. This process involves the deposition of a SiO2 layer onto a The trend in integrated circuits is towards the use of high-resistivity substrates or regions to achieve component isolation. The use of SiO, layers in the oxide isolation methods and the use of sapphire substrates are examples of this idea. GaAs is also a polished surface of a GaAs substrate, etching out selected area of the SiO, film to expose a GaAs surface, and deposition only onto the exposed GaAs surface. By using this process , islands of semiconducting GaAs are deposited onto a semi-insulating GnAs substrate, the islands being electrically isolated from one another by the substrate. The deposition of both p- and n-type semiconducting GaAs can be carried out in this nzanner to form p-n junctions in the island areas. This process can also be used to produce a planav structure by deposition of GctAs through a SiO, mask into holes etched into the GaAs substrate. This Putterned Epitaxial Technology (PET) is described. very promising material for use in future integrated circuits because of the existence of both semi-in-sulating and semiconducting forms. Active devices can be fabricated in the semiconducting material, and these individual components can then be electrically isolated from one another by using semi-insulating GaAs as the substrate. Epitaxial semi-insulating GaAs can also be produced thus making three-dimensional monolithic integrated circuits feasible.' This paper describes the research aimed at developing the methods for producing both two- and three-dimensional integrated circuits in GaAs, and examines some of the properties of semi-insulating GaAs as they relate to these integrated circuits.

THE No. 9 mine of the Wheeling & Lake Erie Coal Mining Co., a subsidiary of M. A. Hanna & Co., at Fairpoint, Ohio, has normally produced about 1000 tons of coal daily for several years, but recently it was converted into an experimental mine to afford means of studying new methods and equipment under consideration for development and mining. Among other projects, the possibility of using a duck-bill, self- loading conveyor in driving entries, with a view of in- creasing the rate of progress where quick development is of importance was studied. Actual operation soon revealed that even though break-throughs are made ,every 60 ft., as required by the state mining laws, the :amount of natural Ventilation reaching the working face was not sufficient to supply the men and that in ,order to obtain a plentiful supply of pure. air and maximum efficiency and to avoid costly interruptions after shots, it was necessary to supply auxiliary ventilation by using Ventube and a Vano fan.

The brass-rolling industry has not had a great deal of experience with antimony in its product. There have been some recent excursions with antimony as a corrosion inhibitor in tubes, but in sheet brass it has been regarded with apprehension and generally avoided. This is not to say that contaminations have never occurred, and probably a great many brass mill men have had their own ideas on the effect of such contamination. Our own views were based upon certain experiences some years ago with strip castings that split lengthwise in the early stages of rolling. The nature of this splitting is shown in Fig. I, from a photograph taken in 1922 as a record of 20 bars of 65-35 common brass made with an antimonial brand of copper. These bars were cast 6¾ in. wide by I in. thick by 45 in. long. In the first pass through the rolls, 19 of the 20 split lengthwise throughout their length, while each half curved outward in a wide arc as it emerged from the rolls. In those days, if splitting was not a frequent occurrence, it was not unfamiliar. One can recall periods of short duration when large amounts of common brass would behave in this way. There was nothing imaginary about these spells. The affected metal would split lengthwise in the breakdown rolls, and no maneuvering of mill practice made any difference. The condition would descend like a plague, demoralize the mill for several days, and disappear. It is doubtful if anyone knew the cause—however many explanations may have been current. The need for a practical method of deciding upon new alloy steel analyses to widen its markets was the problem facing the Chrome Steel Works at the beginning of 1927. In addition to determining the physical properties of the alloys under consideration, it was necessary to test their value in service. Small melts of steel in a crucible, from which test specimens could be made, were insufficient to determine more than physical properties, therefore actual castings and ingots had to be made before the products could be placed in service. Furthermore, to save further experimental work, it was desirable that these heats should be made on a "pilot" basis; that is, actually duplicating regular open-hearth furnace practice. Therefore a one-ton (2000-lb.) acid open-hearth furnace was built. Furnace Design There are no special features in the design of this furnace. Standard acid open-hearth practice is followed, with the reproportioning of the dimensions necessitated by its small size; notably, a considerably increased length in proportion to width in order to get proper flame propagation. After the first heat was made it was found that the check-ers were insufficient. The checker chambers were increased in size and the checker openings were made much smaller. The furnace was started late in March, 1927, and made 65 heats. Experimental work was then stopped unti1, the data accumulated could be worked up and summarized. The run was resumed in November and the furnace is still operating, having made at this writing 60 additional heats. For the last series of runs, there was some rebuilding of both the furnace itself and the checkers. Slag pockets were added. Fig. 1 shows details of construction; Fig. 2, the general appearance. All designing was done by the operating and engineering staff. Construction materials were those available around the plant. The reversing valve is a standard butterfly type taken from an old furnace. The slag pockets and checkers are cleaned by digging down to arched openings which have been bricked up.

In powder metallurgy it has often been observed that shrinkage may occur in one direction and growth in another during sintering. Even in long-time sintering experiments the rate of shrinkage may be different in different parts of the compact. In the fabrication of some parts requiring a constant permeability it is even questionable in some cases whether pressing from one direction should be attempted. These observations require for their interpretation a more detailed study of green or pressed density than has heretofore been available. Usually average density measurements of the whole compact are made and in some cases carefully cut sections are measured. A different approach to the problem was first mentioned by Rakowskil and also used by Balshin.2 Balshin's diagram is reproduced in Fig I and schematically shows the result of pressing three layers of metal powder with fine intervening layers of graphite. The retarding effect of the die walls and a qualitative example of the density distribution is evident. More quantitative information about the distribution of density within a cold-pressed powder compact would be useful in showing the variation in density in as as influenced by the type of poKder, shape of die, lubricatioll during the process, and other variables. Furthermore, information about the cracking of cold-pressed compacts may be obtained from an analysis of the stress distribution within a, powder compact, and some information about the stress distribution can be obtained in turn from the derlsity and strain distributions. A more detailed report on some of the present experiments appears in reference 3. Present Investigation In order to ascertain the density gradients in cold-pressed metal powders, a deformable lead grid within the powder was employed. After pressing in cylindrical di" the ejected compact was radiographed, giving a pattern of the deformed grid. From the radiograph density and deformation from point to point is readily measured. From the radiograph strain distribution and stress trajectories were also determined. The latter also permits the determination of the coefficient of friction at the die wall. This technique indicates that the densest Part of a compact pressed from one side is at the top outer circumference and the least dense region at the bottom circumfercnce near the stationary plunger. For Some heights of compacts the density at the axis is such that the lower density is at the top rather than at the bottom. SO irregular a density distribution is due primarily to die-wall friction. As the ratio - diameter to height of compact is increased the die walls play a correspondingly smaller role. More uniform density

IT is recognized that ingot structure is important in determining the quality of finished steel. Such elements of ingot structure as the size, shape and distribution of primary crystals; the size, shape and distribution of shrinkage cavities; the degree and kind of segregation (both macro and micro); the distribution of nonmetallic impurities and gas cavities are each the result of solidification phenomena. These structural features vary with variations in ingot practice: Their control requires a knowledge of their correlation with the variables of ingot practice. The structures of full-sized commercial steel ingots have been studied extensively by the Steel Ingots Committee of the Iron and Steel Institute.1 This work has contributed much to our knowledge of ingot structure and the factors that control it. These investigations of necessity have been limited in scope because of their costliness and the great amount of time required. Studies of the structure of small steel ingots have not been very satisfactory because of the rapid rate of freezing of the ingots. Their structures are thus difficult to resolve and to interpret. Medium sizes of steel ingots in the ranges of 150 to 500 lb. do offer opportunity for study, but their cost also becomes greater and their use less expeditious. Experimental models for the study of steel-ingot structure have been made of nonferrous metals. Gathmann2 used lead-tin alloys and reported that they were satisfactory for determination of the location of the major shrinkage cavities and the "planes of weakness" resulting from the pattern of crystallization. Certain features of mold design have been illustrated by these results. Bezdenezhnihk3 has used copper and aluminum ingots similarly and has shown the effect of mold-wall thickness on the depth of columnar grains. These studies of nonferrous models have been useful, but their results have been limited because the analogy with steel ingots obviously is not a close one. Model wax ingots have also been useful in pointing out important features of mold design. Gathmann4 watched the solidification of wax ingots, through a glass-walled mold, and has reported the effects of mold type on the location of the shrinkage cavities. Segregation was simulated by using a mixture of paraffin and stearine and adding a red dye that on freezing segregated preferentially to the stearine. Brearley5 also used wax models to determine .the effects of some of the principal features of mold design. Carlsson and Hultgren6 used stearic acid to show that the columnar crystals of ingots tend to slope upward progressively from the mold wall toward the center of the ingot. Time and experience have demonstrated that by means of the Waelz process zinc, lead, cadmium, arsenic, antimony, bismuth and tin can be volatilized satisfactorily. In this way difficult gold ores are being treated to allow for the recovery of the precious metal. Iron ore containing zinc is being treated to remove the zinc and recover the iron. In Germany, thallium is being recovered in commercial quantities from the zinc oxide fume; indium, germanium and gallium are also concentrated to a degree warranting recovery, even though these rare metals are only recognizable in the ore by means of the spectroscope. The physical, chemical or mineralogical condition of the raw material affects very little the applicability of the process. The name Waelz is derived from the German word Waelzen, meaning a "trundling motion," which very aptly describes the movement of the charge through the slowly rotating kiln. The recovery of zinc and lead by volatilization in a rotary kiln has its origin in a process patented in 1910 by Edward Dedolph, of British Columbia. The Dedolph patent was taken over by the Metallgesell-schaft of Frankfurt-on-Main, Germany, which in cooperation with the Griesheim-Elektron, now a part of a large industrial combine, introduced certain improvements (Ohlmer, Specketer patents), but without bringing the process to a state suitable for large-scale operations. The war temporarily stopped all work on the process, and it was not until after the war that the Krupp Grusonwerk, of Magdeburg-Buckau, Germany, quite independently of the Metallgesellschaft, instituted research work in this field of metallurgy, which in 1923 led to the Waelz process proper. The Krupp Grusonwerk and the Metallgesellschaft A.G. later on collaborated, and by their joint efforts further developed and perfected the Waelz process, which they are marketing together as "Waelz-Gemeinschaft." The process is capable of treating a varied type of material; for instance, oxidized and sulphide zinc ores, calamine (zinc carbonate ore) waste dumps, jig tailings, jig slimes, table concentrate slimes, brass ashes, zinc-bearing iron ores (where the iron sinter is the real objective and the zinc oxide a by-product), electrolytic-zinc leach residues, zinc muffle residues and works sweepings, lead-furnace slags, tin ores and slags, anti-

THE matter of grading Indiana oolitic limestone has been under a cooperative study by the Supervising Architect's office, the U. S. Geological Survey, the Bureau of Standards, and the former Indiana Limestone Quarrymen's Association. As the criteria for grading are necessarily based on a number of geologic and related factors of which those quarrying and using the stone had only imperfect appreciation, the first part of the report is a very elementary account of the origin, structure, and the chemical and physical properties of tie stone, and their relations to durability and utilization, and serves as a foundation for the second part, which discusses grading and pro- poses limits for grades established by the quamymen. Salient features of Part I of a report that has been prepared are the variations in uniformity of stone due to cross bedding, and local uncomformities; the relative prominence of weathering effects on the coarser uneven grained surfaces, and its apparent absence on fine, uniform grained surfaces, although the amount of weathering is the same on each; the attributing "crow feet" (stylolites) to solution under pressure, and the explanation that, whereas the thinnest "crow feet" have no noteworthy effect on weathering quality or strength, the thicker ones are likely to weather out rapidly and to promote splitting; the influence of fracturing on the oxidation of the original gray or "blue" to buff color above the ground water level; the interpretation of chemical analyses and the pointing out that both the gray and buff colors are due mainly to organic

The c/laracterzstics of cube-oriented nuclei ard other matrix grains that are associated with secondary, recrystallization to the cube texture in high-purity silicon iron were investigated by me-tallographic and X-ray methods. The results show that the structure consists of relatively perfect grains of average diameter between one and two times the sheet thickness ad that the texture has a moderately strong (110) [001] component and a weak (100) [001] component. The results also indicate that matrix stability results from the two-dimensional nuture of the graitzs and that cube-orzented nuclei are neither more Perfect nor larger grains than other matrix grains but have a preferred [001] direction in the rolling direction and have a more effective driving force for growth than other grains because of a low (100) surface energy. THE structures and textures of fine-grained rnatrices determine to a large extent the kinds of secondary recrystallization textures that form on annealing. The understanding of secondary recrystallization processes therefore depends on adequate information about the initial matrices. Matrices usually have three characteristics: 1) they consist of fine-grained primary recrystallization structures, 2) the fine-grained structures are stable toward normal grain growth, and 3) they contain secondary recrystallization nuclei. Stability toward normal grain growth may be due to either a strong single orientation texture (texture inhibition)' or a dispersed second phase (dispersed phase inhibition).2"4 If normal grain growth is not inhibited by either of these two factors, it nevertheless stops when the average grain size is between one and two times the sheet thick- ness.5 This thickness effect satisfies one of the characteristics of a matrix for secondary recrystallization. Its importance in the development of the cube texture in high-purity silicon iron by secondary recrystallization was pointed out by the authors in a recent paper on tertiary recrystallization7 and will be discussed further in the present paper. Assmus, Detert, and he8 have provided some information on a matrix for secondary recrystallization to the cube texture in silicon iron. They found a (110)[001] or Goss texture with enough spread about the rolling direction to include a small amount of the (100)[00l] orientation. The distribution of the [00l] directions was strongest parallel to the rolling direction for both (100) primaries and cube secondaries. These authors found no correlation between size of a matrix grain and orientation and concluded that some property other than size must be the distinguishing characteristic of the cube-oriented nucleus. IN THE early stages of the depression the Utah Copper Co. realized that an unemployment problem would he created which demanded an intelligent and sympathetic solution. The company recognized that as many men as possible must be kept at work on a basis which would ultimately permit of the most efficient reabsorption of displaced labor. The company therefore determined to distribute available work among the greatest number of men and to that end adopted a system of rotating employees on a part-time basis. An employer requires a certain number of days' or shifts' work during the month. Obviously one employee working thirty days or shifts a month is equal to two employees each working fifteen. In principle, therefore, where two employees equally fitted to do certain work are available the work could be divided between them on an equitable basis and twice as many persons would benefit. A rotation plan on this basis was adopted by the Utah Copper, Co. on Jan. 30, 1930. Some variations of the orig¬inal plan have been made from time to time, the reasons for which will be discussed.

Reservoir depletion by natural water drive is typified by the movement of water from an aquifer into the adjacent oil-bearing formation. Prior studies of this type 01 water movement have generally neglected the resistance to flow in the aquifer and its effect on the movement of water into the oil bearing zone. A method for designing and operating scaled models of such reservoir systems is presented. Experimental data on a model of an edge-water-drive reservoir are shown and discussed. INTRODUCTION Most petroleum reservoirs derive at least a part of their productive capacity from water influx. This water may be injected from the surface or it may come from an aquifer adjacent to the oil zone. In either case, the reservoir engineer must be able to estimate the advance of the water as a function of either the elapsed time or the fluid produced. This paper describes a type of fluid flow model which includes the effect of viscous and gravitational forces in the reservoir and the surrounding aquifer. Natural water influx can be divided into three general (but widely overlapping) categories according to the direction of flow in the aquifer. These are shown schematically in Fig. 1. Fig. l(a) illustrates an edge-water-drive mechanism. In this case, water advances updip along the stratum but the movement of water is essentially horizontal and very little of the oil is actually underlain by water. The bottom-water drive (Fig. l(b)) is characterized by a thick aquifer underlying the oil zone. The water movement is generally vertical in the aquifer. The third category is illustrated in l(c). Referred to as the "thin oil column", this type of oil accumulation consists of oil over water in a relatively thin stratum. Fluid movement is horizontal in both the oil and water zones, except close to the producing well. One characteristic which all three of these types have in common is that part of the water flow takes place in the water invaded region of the oil reservoir while the remainder of the water flow occurs in the aquifer. The resistance to the flow of water usually will not be the same in these two regions. This occurs because the porous rock normally contains only water in the aquifer, while the water-invaded region always contains microscopic globules of bypassed oil (residual oil) which interfere with the flow of water through the rock. The production history of any type of a water-drive system is a function of two phenomena — where the water goes, and how it displaces the oil in the area invaded by the water. It is usually impractical to study these two phenomena at the same time. In most cases one type of analysis is used to predict the gross movement of water in the reservoir, while a different type of analysis is employed to determine the amount of oil to be recovered from the gross volume contacted by the water. The portion of the oil reservoir which is invaded by water is mainly a function of the resistances to fluid flow in the several parts of the flow system. This gross water influx in the three types of natural water drive typically results in water cusping to the production wells either from the side or from below (water coning). In 1747, Muskat described a greatly simplified mathematical model for predicting the area invaded by water in a bottom-water-drive reservoir.1 This model used the Laplace equation and suitable boundary conditions to describe the isopotentials and streamlines in the flow system. The use of this model assumes that (1) the reservoir rock is homogeneous in nature, (2) the oil and water mobilities are equal, (3) there is no oil flowing in the water invaded region, and (4) external forces — such as gravity — do not affect the flow. This method has been used for both natural water drives and water injection projects. THE Kingsport formation, a part of the Knox dolomite of Ordovician age, is composed of 538 ft of dolomite and limestone. Numerous bands, layers and nodules of chert, arenaceous and shale zones are present. The characteristics displayed by these features have been useful in mapping, prospecting and mining. Perhaps a better understanding of the origin of these zones will increase their usefulness.

Marked improvement in the serviceability of sucker rods has been effected in the last two years, partly because of the insistent necessity for greater economy in the operating costs of crude oil production growing out of the general industrial depression and partly because many of the recently developed fields have imposed more severe operating conditions upon both surface and underground equipment. The latter is particularly true of Kansas, where practically all of the oil produced is associated with damaging amounts of hydrogen sulfide brine and where the method of establishing potential production demands equipment capable of being operated at maximum capacity without interruptions. The decline of flush production in the Oklahoma City field created new problems in deep-well pumping on a scale heretofore unequaled and the increased proportion of water it has been necessary to produce in the fields of the Greater Seminole area presented conditions that were acutely in need of betterment. The problem in the latter fields was complicated by the shift towards sulfide characteristics, which accompanied water encroachment, and it is probably true that nowhere, at the present time, are pumping conditions generally as severe as in this territory. The Mid-Continent district, therefore, has become the proving ground for the numerous materials that have been proposed for sucker-rod fabrication. The information that ultimately will be obtained from an unprecedented amount of field experimentation will pay ample dividends when the decline of East Texas increases the demand for the vast reserves of sour crude in West Texas. It is a rare occurrence in industry that the use of such a simple piece of equipment as a sucker rod presents so complicated a problem for solution. As proof of this, it is only necessary to consider the numerous types of sucker rods on the market at the present time and contrast this condition with that of less than four years ago, when it was the common aim of manufacturers to develop a single sucker rod for all conditions of

The constitution of the system silver-mercury has attracted the attention of many investigators during the last two decades, but since their results are for the most part in poor agreement, there is little need for a review of their individual contributions. It remained for the very careful thermal and microscopic investigation of Murphy1 in 1931 to give the constitutional diagram in its present and unquestioned form, which is shown in Fig. 1. The compositions of the intermediate phases were confirmed and supplemented through X-ray analyses by Preston2 and Stenbeck.3 According to Murphy, at 2760 C. silver is able to dissolve 44 to 45 weight per cent of mercury, which may increase at lower temperatures to about 50 per cent. Preston concluded that the saturation boundary occurred at 46 ± 2 per cent at 100° C. From the values reported in the literature, these are the only ones that may be accepted as lying even in the right region. Preparation of Alloys The silver used in the present investigation was supplied by the United States Metals Refining Co. through the courtesy of the Committee on Industrial Uses of Silver and, since a complete spectrographic and chemical analysis was furnished, no attempt was made to purify it or to further establish the impurities present. The analyses reported by the company are shown in Table 1. Milligan4 has found that the magnesium content is probably less than 0.0005 per cent.

The constitution of the system silver-mercury has attracted the attention of many investigators during the last two decades, but since their results are for the most part in poor agreement, there is little need for a review of their individual contributions. It remained for the very careful thermal and microscopic investigation of Murphy1 in 1931 to give the constitutional diagram in its present and unquestioned form, which is shown in Fig. 1. Canada's newest low-grade porphyry copper mine, Gibralter Mines Ltd. (N.P.L.), has reached production. The subsidiary of Placer Development Ltd., located at Williams Lake in the Caraboo District of central British Columbia, began open pit mining in mid-June on reserves estimated at 358 million tons assaying 0.373r: Cu and 0.016C; MoS,. Each of four separate zones will be mined in a predetermined sequence, in one or more stages, and with a throughput of more than 36,000 tpd. The sequence and stages of mining the zones have been determined by computer calculation and economic analysis and are designed to maximize recovery and minimize cost. At the very least, the mine is off to a promising start. Development costs leveled off at $67 million. 9'; below the anticipated budget.

During the heat-treatment of silver specimens for tensile tests it was observed that the bars blistered and became brittle when heated in a hydrogen atmosphere. To check this unexpected result, a wide variety of commercial silvers were heated in hydrogen at 850°C. Only a few of the materials developed blisters, the most severe of which is the tube pictured in Fig. I. The microstructure of a cross section of the tube is shown in Fig. 2. The embrit-tlernent is extremely severe at the edge; the blisters result from the severe deformation of the surface material by large under- lying gas pockets. The effects resulting from hydrogen embrittlement of silver have been observed by numerous investigators over a long time l,2,3 although it was only recently that a clear explanation was offered.4 However, the damage resulting from hydrogen embrittlement has not been generally recognized; and it is of advantage to know more about this phe- 1 References are at the end of the paper.
