Dubbed "Freeport's Mission Impossible" by the trade press, the company's Ertsberg mine in West Irian nevertheless shipped its first concentrates in December 1972, ahead of schedule. This is a new and great chapter in the history of Freeport Minerals Co. and its contractors. Exploration and construction were only possible by moving equipment and supplies by helicopters. This work was carried out by Petroleum Helicopters, Inc., of Lafayette, La. At the peak of operations six machines were in service manned by 11 pilots and supported by 10 mechanics. During the month of August, with work in full swing 1,604 tons were moved, including 3 DC-6 tractors requiring 18 trips each; flying hours for the month were 636.

Although thousands of tons of stainless steel have been used successfully for many types of equipment, there have been few cases of failures due to the phenomenon described as stress corrosion cracking. During the past seven years only six cases of such failures have been drawn to our attention and investigated in the Research Laboratories with which the author is associated. These failures oc¬curred in two coffee urns, two wool con¬ditioning units, one dyeing machine, and another in a part of a steam-jacketed stock pot. In each case the equipment failed in a comparatively short time after exposure to conditions of high humidity at tempera¬tures in the range of 100 to 200 F. The failures in all cases were characterized by general embrittlement and cracking of the stainless steel, with only slight indications of general corrosion except at the cracks. The first failure of this type was a coffee urn returned for investigation in 1937. The top and bottom sections showed a general corrosive attack and embrittlement and cracking of the stainless steel. The chemical analyses of these sections were as follows:

The amount of research done in the last fen years on the subject of diffusion in solid metals is significant of the importance of this problem. To review the literature dealing with diffusion is unnecessary here. Deschl in 1912 reviewed the work that had been done on diffusion in solids and gave a bibliography of the literature published before that time. Mehl's paper in 19362 is an excellent review of diffusion in metals and contains a large bibliography. Of importance also for it? review and bibliography is an article by 14. I. Krynitsky.~ While considerable material lias appeared in the literature on diffusion in brass, the amount of information is not great compared to that pertaining to some of the other alloys. Most of the information published is of a qualitative nature; that which is quantitative varies considerably. Thus the quantitative determination of the rates of diffusion of copper and zinc in alpha brass by a new method appeared worth while. In the present investigation the rate of diffusion of zinc in approximately the same composition alpha brass has been determined :it three temperatures. Procedure The method used consisted of plating copper on a beta brass, heating it, to allow diffusion to take place, and measuring the concentration of copper by determining the lattice constant of the alloy. This method is unique in that it uses a beta brass of such a composition that at the tem perature at which diffusion takes place the beta brass is saturated wit11 copper. For many years it has been known that large bodies of iron ore existed in Iron and Washington counties in Utah. The ore is chiefly hematite-both hard and soft-though some magnetite is found. No definite and complete estimate of the iron ore reserves of the state have been made. The U. S. Geological Survey estimated that 40,000,000 tons of ore were disclosed by development work averaging only 35 feet below the surface of the ore. The ore is found along an area about one and a half miles wide by twenty miles long, and for the most part on the eastern and southern slopes or foothills of Three Peaks. Granite Mountain and Iron Mountain. Later estimates by others have gone as high as ore in sight 164,000,000 tons, probable ore 300,000,000 tons and possible ore 1,000,000,000 tons. Whether this last estimate is too great or not there is sufficient iron ore in Utah to justify the starting of an iron industry. Two companies are now mining iron ore in Utah, the Columbia Steel Corporation and the Utah Iron Corporation. The mine of the Columbia Steel Corporation is at Iron Springs a few miles west of Cedar City. About 650 tons, of ore a day is being shipped to the blast furnace at Ironton. The ore is mined by the glory hole method. After being drilled it is blasted to the bottom of the several glory holes and is dropped through chutes into cars on the ore haulage level below. It is then hauled by electric locomotives to the crushing plant, where it is crushed to blast furnace size before going to storage bins. Some of the softer ore is brought to the chutes by Fresno scrapers.

THE investigations of Wyman1 have demonstrated that copper deoxidized with several of the commonly used agents that confer immunity to ordinary hydrogen em-brittlement can still be embrittled if it is annealed alternately under oxidizing and reducing conditions. During the oxidizing cycle, oxygen diffuses into the copper and frequently deposits a subscale composed of the oxide of the residual deoxidizing agent. Upon subsequent reduction with hot hydro-gen, the copper becomes ruptured along the grain boundaries to a depth sharply limited by the previous penetration of oxy-gen as delineated by the inner boundary of the subscale. Obviously the sensitivity to this kind of hydrogen embrittlement is engendered by the introduction of oxygen during the oxi-dizing anneal, but beyond this the mecha-nism of the process, and hence the controlling factors, remain obscure. There are several possibilities: (I) oxygen dissolved in the copper matrix of the subscale may, upon cooling prior to the hydrogen anneal, precipitate as cuprous oxide which is subse-quently reduced by hydrogen as in the familiar case of hydrogen embrittlement; (2) oxygen in solid solution in copper may itself confer susceptibility to embrittlement by hydrogen; (3) the normally refractory oxides such as those of aluminum, silicon and titanium may themselves he reduced by hydrogen when in contact with copper; or (4) the precipitated oxides of the sub-scale may be complex compounds such, perhaps, as Si02-Cu20, which are partially reduced by hydrogen. These possibilities have been examined, and it has been con-cluded that the first three and possibly the fourth are operative collectively or indi-vidually under more or less predictable conditions.

It is a distinct privilege to participate in this meeting convened to honor the memory of Henry Marion Howe, a distinguished scientist and metallurgist. Many have added to our rapidly growing fund of metallurgical knowledge but few have made the unique contribution of formulating basic concepts essential to an over-all comprehensive view of the subject of metallography. Of those previously selected to deliver this lecture, several have added a personal touch to their discourse because they were able to refer to their associations with Dr. Howe. It was not my good fortune to know him or to enjoy his inspiring influence. Like most of you, my contact has been with his published works, which are outstanding in that they provide lucid, detailed expositions of the nature and behavior of metals and alloys. His deep understanding and clarity of expression have greatly accelerated our progress in metallography and in the use of metals. The degree to which a man's thinking, experimentation and writing contribute toward an understanding of basic laws and phenomena determines whether his life's work is of transitory or permanent value. This occasion appropriately recognizes the fundamental importance of Dr. Howe's pioneer work in the field of metallurgy.. On two former occasions, gray iron was selected as a subject for discussion. The fact that the production of pig iron has not been discussed before does not reflect any lack of interest on the part of Dr. Howe or former lecturers in the process that underlies the production of steel. Although Dr. Howe's work in his later years centered around metallography, his earlier publications show a considerable interest in the production of iron and steel. He recognized that in the ascending spiral of metallurgical advancement we are not winding a single thread but are weaving a complex fabric. Specific evidence of his interest in the production of pig iron may be found in his book' on The Metallography of Cast Iron and Steel. In explaining why blast furnaces have been in constant use for about 600 years, he says: "The process is economical because it utilizes with extraordinary completeness the calorific power of the coke due to the thorough transfer of heat from the gaseous products of combustion to the charge." This emphasis on heat transfer, overlooked in many more extended and more recent discussions of the blast-furnace process, illustrates Professor Howe's ability to see the essentials. Other distinct advantages of the blast furnace, such as the removal of- much of the sulphur and practically all of the oxygen, were mentioned. It was also stated that although the blastfurnace process is complex in nature, its outward form is comparatively simple, thus permitting large-scale production at small labor costs. The application of aviation to mining and petroleum operations, on the basis of economy and attainment, has become a demonstrated fact. According to Dominion Government rccords, 30 Canadian companies engaged in air transportation with northland mining camps, carried 13,000 tons of freight in 1935, and in 1936 carried 16,000 tons. In addition, many mining companies used planes to transport prospectors with canoes, outboard motors, gasoline drums and supplies to remote locations, and one company maintained a plane to take radium-bearing ore from its mine on Great Bear Lake nearly 1000 miles south to the railway at Waterways, Alberta. Heavy pieces of mining machinery weighing 2 tons are being carried by Ford trimotor planes over the Andes, at an altitude of not less than 15,000 feet. At Bulolo, New Guinea, 17,500 tons of disassembled gold-dredging equipment has been flown over inaccessible terrain, while supplies and building materials for a community of 1000 whites have been transported by airplane. A 31/2-ton shaft was carried on one notable trip, while at another time an automobile, 2 tons of rice and a large safe went over the mountains in one plane. Fig. 1 shows an electric generator that was carried by plane to Bulolo. Many large American oil companies operated fleets of planes during 1936, ranging from fast, luxurious air liners for executives to elaborate geological prospecting units, ambulance planes, freight carriers and pipe-line repair crews. According to the U. S. Geological Survey, commercial firms photographed 16,291 square miles during 1935, while the Government compiled from aerial photographs by the Geological Survey in the United States 85,544 square miles. It was found that information could be determined in a fraction of the time required by surface methods. However, sounding a word of caution, a Commonwealth of Australia government report on aerial survey operations had this to say: It is necessary to repeat ad nauseam that aerial photographic survey is in no sense a substitute for geological investigation, though it is a very valuable adjunct thereto, and greatly facilitates and aceeleratcs geological mapping. The interface morphology of the Mg-32 wt pct A1 eutectic has been studied in terms of the freezing rate, the temperature gradient, and the impurity content. For the impure eutectic it has been found that for a given temperature gradient a fast freezing rate favors the formation of a cellular intwface with sub-grain strucfure. This cellular interface can be changed to a planar interface of the same substructure either by decreasing the freezing rate or by increasing the temperature gradient. For the eutectic of highest purity, as purified by zme-refining, no cellular interface was found for any growth condition and only a planar interface with subgrain structure was observed. Furthermore, a layer of liquid adhering to the interface during de-cantation freezes with shapes and sizes of the phase particles different from those in the main eutectic solid. WHEN a molten metal or a binary eutectic liquid with zero freezing range is solidified unidirec-tionally, a cellular interface is usually formed-3 This interface is schematically represented by Fig. 1. The profile of the solid-liquid interface has a corrugated shape, as shown in Fig. l(a), while the decanted interface consists of cells, as shown in Fig. l(b). The cell boundary in a frozen eutectic is distinguishable from the cell interior by changes in particle shapes, as shown in Fig. 4. The formation of a cellular interface, according to Weart and ack,' is attributed to a layer of constitutionally supercooled" liquid generated at the advancing interface by the simultaneous rejection of an impurity by the two phases of the eutectic mixture, which then permits freezing over an appreciable temperature range. This concept has been further elaborated by Tiller, who predicts that even in the absence of an impurity the rejection of solute ahead of each lamella of the eutectic may promote the formation of a cellular interface. WHEN this study was started very little information was available, regarding the physical characteristics of West Virginia coals. This was particularly true of friability and of crushing strengths of the coals. Some work had been done on specific gravity studies but the available information applied to only a few coals. In practically all coal-classification systems thus far proposed, the predominating factors of classifications are largely based on the chemical characteristics of the coal. Recently some investigators have pointed out that a classification based on chemical and physical properties of coal might serve to place coals in their proper group better than classification systems based on chemical properties alone. One of the aims of this study was to obtain some data on the physical properties of coal which might help to properly classify West Virginia coals.

The formation of grain boundary precipitates has been studied in Ag-5.64 wt pcl Al alloys at 688°C. Large-grain specinzerzs were used and the boundary misorientation measured by X-ray diffraction. At low-angle grain boundrrries Primary sideplates form. u)hile abore a 17-deg misorientation lenticular precipitates predominate. Growth of the lenticular precipitates was studied on individual grain boundaries using a statistical technique. The thickening and lengthening rates appeared to be independent of &apos;pain boundary misorientation, indicating that grain boundary diffusion was not significant in this system. The precipitates grew urith constant shape, with both the length and thickness increasing parabolically with time. The parabolic lengthening rates were unexpected since previous theory and experimerztal results had indicated linear growth. By approximating the shape of the precipitate to that of an oblate spheroid grouling with constant shape an equivalent diffusion coefficienl was calculated. The zlalue obtained was in good agreement with nleasurements obtained fron, diffusiorz couples. IF a single-phase alloy is heated or cooled to a temperature such that the phase becomes supersaturated, there is a tendency for a second phase to precipitate from it in order to remove the supersaturation. Precipitation takes place initially on grain boundaries due to preferred heterogeneous nucleation, but subsequently Widmans kitten plates may form in the grain interiors if the grain size and supersaturation are sufficient. The type of grain boundary precipitate formed depends on the nature of the boundary. Aaronson1 and clark2 have shown that grain boundary misorientation can be characterized by the simple parameter R, where and X, Y, and Z represent the minimum rotations about three orthogonal axes required to bring the two lattices forming the grain boundary into coincidence. The maximum value for R is 60 deg. In using this parameter the orientation of the grain boundary itself is, of course, neglected. However it was found in both Fe-si3 and A1-Ag2 that the precipitate shape depended only on the parameter R. Clark found that the vast majority of precipitates formed were allo-triomorphs— lens-shaped precipitates that grew along the grain boundaries. At low-angle boundaries, however, (R < 15 deg) Widmanstatten sideplates nucleated at the grain boundaries and grew into the adjacent grains. It has been reported that the rate of growth of grain boundary precipitates is controlled by diffusion within the supersaturated phase.&apos; The theories which have been developed for growth rates have assumed the diffusion coefficient constant over the composition range of the supersaturated phase. This is a fairly good approximation if the composition range involved is not large. An intermediate compound that has been identified as Niab is observed to form as a decomposition product from supersaturaled Ni-Nb solid solutions during aging at temperatures between approximately 300" and 500°C. On the basis of data from electron microscopy and selected-area diffraction, the structure of this compound has been determined as fct with a = b - 3a0 and c = a, wlzere a,, is the lattice parameter of the parent solid solution. The compound consists of close-packed layers with triangular ordering, where the niobiutrl atoms are separated by two nickel atoms ([long- close?-packed directions. A nine layer stacking sequence is required to describe the proposed structure. STUDIES of the Ni-Nb binary system have been limited primarily to phase diagram determinations,&apos;-4 investigations of high-temperature equilibrium phases,5"1 and the determination of the influence of deformation on the structure of the equilibrium compound.8 The nickel-rich portion of the binary system is reported to be of the simple eutectic type in which the maximum solubility of 12.7 at. pct Nb occurs at 1282"c.&apos; The two-phase field below the eutectic temperature is bounded by the a fcc solid solution and an orthorhombic Ni3Nb compound. No metastable phases have been reported in previous investigations. In transformation studies of certain nickel-base commercial alloys that contain niobium, two ordered metastable compounds containing niobium have been shown to precipitate from the solid solution, both of which have been identified as y&apos; and have the composition NisNb or Ni,Nb. One compound has been reported to have the bct DOz2 type Al3Ti structure" and the other the cubic LI2 type Cu3Au structure.9,11 In the present work on Ni-Nb binary alloys a metastable y&apos; compound has not been detected after conventional quenching and aging treatments. An anomalous behavior was noted in electrical resistivity measurements. in alloys containing between 7 to 12 at. pct Nb when aging treatments were performed below 500°C after fast quenching from 1250°C. Transmission electron microscopy has shown that this behavior is caused by the formation of a low-temperature precipitate of unreported structure type and composition. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Several Ni-Nb alloys, containing up to 11.5 at. pct Nb. were prepared by either levitation melting and casting in copper molds or by induction melting in alumina crucibles; both techniques employed purified helium gas as a protective atmosphere. The purity of the nickel and niobium used to make the alloys was 99.98 wt pct Ni and 99.9 wt pct Nb. The composition and homogeneity of the alloys were checked by weight measurements and by electron microprobe analysis. The induction-melted alloys were homogenized for 100 hr at 1100°C. The resistivity specimens were prepared from rods swaged to 2.5 mm and the electron microscopy specimens were cut from sheet that was rolled to 0.4 mm and thinned using a modified Bollmann technique." The elevated-temperature solution treatments were carried out in a purified helium atmosphere followed by direct quenching into a 10 pct NaCl solution at 23°C. Additional protection against oxidation of the samples during solution treatment was accomplished by using tantalum foil as a "getter" in the furnace. The specimens were aged at various temperatures in salt baths controlled to +2oC. A Leeds and Northrup K5 potentiometer was used to make electrical resistivity measurements on specimens immersed in liquid nitrogen. Electron microscopy and diffraction studies were carried out with JEM-7 and Philips EM-200 microscopes operating at 100 kv. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Ni-Nb alloys containing between 7 and 11.5 at. pct Nb that have been solution-treated in the range 1220" to 1280°C and quenched to 23°C undergo a precipitation reaction when aged in the temperature range 300" to 500°C. Precipitation was detected by selected-area electron diffraction after aging a specimen for as little as 30 sec at 350°C) whereas the reaction was well-advanced after aging for 150 hr at 475°C. Electrical resistivity measurements were used to monitor the progress of the precipitation reaction. In the present experiments the nucleation process for precipitation required a high solution temperature and a rapid quench into brine. The presence of aluminum, iron? and carbon in amounts totaling less than 1 wt pct was found by electron diffraction to completely suppress the formation of the low-temperature precipitate that has been detected in the binary alloy. Electron diffraction techniques were used to determine the structure of the precipitates that formed during the decomposition of the Ni-Nb supersaturated solid solutions. Figs. l(a) through l(d) show electron diffraction patterns oriented to the [loo], [110], [lll], and [I031 zone axes of the matrix. Areas of reciprocal space between these sections were investigated by slowly varying the orientations of the crystal under study; this procedure revealed no reflections other than those depicted in Fig. 1. The presence of super-lattice reflections at points coincident with the matrix reflections was confirmed by the examination of an almost completely transformed structure. Since so many different curves have been published for the solid solubility of zinc in aluminum, it seems desirable to definitely establish the correct curve by two or more independent methods. The curve published in part I1t was based entirely upon X-ray measurements because the other methods employed at that time were not satisfactory. The present paper (the seventeenth of this series on high-purity aluminum alloys) describes the determination of the solid solubility of zinc in aluminum by the measurement of electrical resistivity at temperature and by microscopic examination. Since the publication of our part I in 1932, an investigation of the solubility relations in the aluminum-zinc system has been reported by Schmid and Wassermann2, who obtained their solubility results from lattice-parameter measurements on heat-treated and quenched specimens. The diagram that they published is shown in Fig. 1. In this investigation they also found by X-ray measurements that the parameter of the gamma phase changed continuously with zinc content and at such a rate that it would be identical with that of the beta phase at 60 atomic per cent zinc. It was concluded therefore that the beta and gamma phases, from the point of view of structural relationship, are one single phase. They also suggested a gap of immiscibility between 270" and 350" C. The complete boundary in this region could not be determined satisfactorily by the method employed and therefore was not shown in their diagram. Aluminum-zinc Alloys Materials Used.—Electrolytically refined aluminum3 was used in preparing the alloys for the work reported in this paper. Chemical analysis showed the following impurities: 0.004 to 0.005 per cent silicon, 0.006 to 0.008 per cent iron and 0.005 to 0.006 per cent copper. Also,

The problem of high unit costs, however, was held over from 1948. With the lower prices for metals, greater efforts are being made to reduce operating costs. The labor supply was adequate during the latter half of the year in most districts. The force has been reduced at most mines; some mines were idle during part of the year because of strikes, and others ceased operations on their own account. In the main, labor efficiency increased during the year in underground metal mines. Efforts are being made generally to improve labor relations. Green men hired in the time of the scarcity of skilled miners are becoming better trained. The supervisory personnel of most mines is cost conscious, and the planning of operations has been improved. Overhead costs are being scrutinized. The trend toward mechanization underground continued strong. Mining technology rapidly is becoming a problem of handling materials. Surface miners, underground miners and miners of metals, nonmetallics, and coal can learn much Gardner from each other. A mine, however, may become overmechanized. The capital charges against new equipment may exceed the saving in labor costs where sufficient daily tonnage is not handled.

INTRODUCTION A medium sized mine like the Mamut is not considered a standard size porphyry copper mine. If the infrastructure such as roads, bridges, port facilities, power supply, etc. is inadequate, construction cost per ton of copper produced will be unavoidably high. At the Mamut mine, all efforts had been concentrated to minimize construction cost and overcome an adverse natural environment. Consequently, it was inevitable that the amount of equipment and other arrangements were far from ideal. Some of the construction work was carried out by Japanese contractors, but most was done by local contractors, especially the buildings, installation of machines, roads, and tailings disposal dam, etc. All construction works, including a test run of an 18 000 t/d capacity mill, were completed in September 1975. The total development cost was about 100 million including interest converted into principal during the construction period. HISTORY The Mamut copper mineralization was discovered in mid-1965 by the United Nations&apos; Labuk Valley Project. Following this discovery, further exploratory works, including geochemical survey, pitting, and shallow diamond drilling, which were carried out by the Geological Survey of Malaysia, revealed the existence of a disseminated copper mineralization of porphyry type. THE diffusion of metal atoms into the crystal lattice of another metal and the assumption of regular positions to form a homogeneous alloy are some of the most fundamental phenomena of structural. metallurgy. The mechanism of this process has been the subject of a great deal of study from many viewpoints, but the picture is still far from complete. It is generally believed that if one metal is to diffuse into another, the first must have some solubility in the second1. This means that the solvent must be able to accommodate the stranger atoms, either on points of its own lattice or in the interstices between, without losing its own crystallographic identity. It is also a general observation that cold-working is a distinct aid in the diffusion process, causing it to take place with greater rapidity at the same temperature or with the same speed at a lower temperature. There is considerable doubt, however, as to the real significance of the deformation in its effect on the diffusion mechanism. Several factors associated with the cold-working. may be responsible for the increased diffusion rate. The plastic deformation causes a distortion of the solvent lattice, which may be an aid in the assimulation of atoms of another kind. There are many references2 in the literature that suggest that some distortion or "loosening" of the lattice is necessary for atomic migration and that diffusion cannot take place in the undis-

THE mines of the Consolidated Coppermines Corporation are at Kimberly, in the Robinson mining district, White Pine County, Nevada. [ ] The blanket-like ore body is a disseminated copper deposit occurring in monzonite porphyry and, in general, is thoroughly fractured, altered, and soft. Contained in the porphyry ores of the extreme westerly end of the ore body are pendants of hard garnetized limestone. A younger monzonite porphyry underlies the ore-bearing porphyry, which in turn rests on limestone and shale. Block caving is the standard method of mining. Because of the undulating top and bottom contours of the ore body, the main haulage level was selected and driven at an elevation calculated to be the most economic depth below the major tonnage sections of ore. Fig. I shows a general section of the Emma Nevada ore body taken through its long axis, which lies roughly in an east-west direction. Mine openings in either type of porphyry require heavy timbering and constant maintenance and repair, particularly in horizons at or near the ore body contact. Where the ore lies close to the haulage level, slusher hoists and scrapers are used to transport horizontally the ore to the main haulage drift (Fig. 2). For the extraction of high-lying ores, a system of branch raises is used; and the ore is mined by gravity. Slushing methods are used also on the high-lying ore-body fringes. Slusher drifts are often driven from the fringe branch raises that have already served their purpose, in order to minimize the cost of the preparatory work in mining the thinner portions of the ore body (Figs. 3 and 4). When a block of ore is developed and undercut, it is economical to mine it as rapidly as the ore will cave efficiently; and this procedure often presents safety problems because of men with equipment working in a relatively congested area. The single-track main haulage drift is about 1 ½ miles long, and lateral haulage drifts are driven under the ore body at intervals determined by the height of the ore body above the haulage level. THE absence of a convenient glossary of terms connected with mining and metallurgy has long been felt by the general public. It is to meet this want, not to furnish a technical manual for experts, that the following glossary has been prepared. It originated in an attempt on my part to revise for publication the manuscript of a compilation prepared from the appendix of Yale&apos;s work on Mining Titles and one or two other sources, to serve as an appendix to a new work on mining law, about to be published by Mr. H. N. Copp, of Washington, D. C. This revision soon assumed, contrary to my original intention, the proportions of a reconstruction; and with the consent of Mr. Copp, and for the purpose of receiving from my fellow-members valuable aid, I presented my still incomplete work as a paper at the Lake Superior meeting of the Institute, inviting from any quarter suggestions of new terms or better definitions to be incorporated in the glossary before its final publication. This invitation was so widely and generously responded to, that I cannot undertake to make in this place individual acknowledgments to those members of the Institute, and professional colleagues outside of it, who have favored me with assistance and advice. The labor bestowed upon this paper since its presentation at the Lake Superior meeting has considerably exceeded that of its first preparation, as may be inferred from its great increase in length, as well as the numerous alterations which it has undergone. It could certainly be still further enlarged and improved; but I think a comparison of it with any of the glossaries of the same class now in print will show, at least, that it is an advance upon what has hitherto been accomplished. 1 shall be grateful, however, for further criticisms and suggestions; and I purpose at some future time to incorporate in a supplementary paper the results of such additional collections or corrections as I may obtain. To avoid too great prolixity, I adopted at the outset the following general principles: 1. To include the most important technical words and phrases used by American miners and metallurgists, or occurring in English books and periodicals.
