THE (110) [001] texture in silicon iron is of considerable interest both from the technological and scientific points of view. Its occurrence was reported more than 20 years ago.1-4 The texture develops by means of secondary re crystallizatjon5 and can be very strong, that is, greater than 90 pct alignment even thouh the primary re crystallization texture is weak or complex. This behavior is in contradistinction to the face-centered metals which develop their strong secondary recrystalliza-tion texture from a strong primary recrystalliza-tion texture.', The microstructural changes accompanying the (110) [001] texture formation in silicon iron are as follows: When properly prepared cold-rolled sheet (i.e., 0.015 in. thick) is annealed at about 800°C, primary recrystallization occurs and a fairly stable fine-grained primary recrystallized matrix of about 0.02-mm-diam grain size is produced. The material at this stage does not have the strong (110) [110] texture. As the temperature is raised to about 900°C, relatively large grains appear in the finegrained matrix and they grow at the expense of the smaller grains to many times the sheet thickness. In time the complete sample is consumed by these large grains. This process of the growth of relatively few grains (about one in 105 primary grains) at the expense of many grains is called secondary recrystallization. Since all the secondary grains are of essentially (110) [001.] orientation, the strong texture is developed by this secondary recrystallization process. Theories of the (110) [001] texture in polycrystal-line silicon iron have been proposed by Decker and Harker and by Dunn.Decker and Harker have shown that grains initially in the (110) [001] orientation will upon annealing after cold-rolling, re-crystallize back to the initial orientation. To account for the sharp texture in silicon iron they propose that (110) [001] grains become more highly strained than grains in other orientations and therefore recrystallize first. They are then the lowest energy grains and can consume their higher energy neighbors. Grains in orientations other than (110)

Discussion of the paper of Archer E. Wheeler and Milo W. Krejci, presented at the Butte meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 80, August, 1913, pp. 1831 to 1880. BRADLEY STOUGHTON, New York, N. Y.:-I would like to ask Mr. Krejci whether they have tried mixing coke dust with the lime in those converters and, if so, if any advantage has been found. It has been a very great advantage in the steel converters where coke dust has been mixed with the lime near the tuyeres. Of course the agent that causes the corrosion at that point is oxide of iron, and coke seems to prevent the formation of the oxide of iron and so protect the tuyeres. It would be interesting to know if it had the same effect in the copper converters. MILO W. KREJCI:-We have never tried it here. At Anaconda the tuyere section was formerly put in by mixing magnesite with tar and ramming that into the tuyere section, but they have abandoned that. Might I ask how you would apply the coke dust? How get it into the tuyere section ? How hold it there ? BRADLEY STOUGHTON :-The coke dust is mixed with silica and clay and then rammed in and burned. I suppose in your converters it would be mixed with the magnetite or magnesite and then agglomerated with the material in place. MILO W. KREJCI:-We never tried it here. PROF. JOSEPH W. RICHARDS, South Bethlehem, Pa.:-I would like to ask how thick this deposit of magnetite is on the lining. How thick a layer would be practical ? MILO W. KREJCI:-About 21 in. would be sufficient. SOLOMON LE FEVRE, Mineville, N. Y.:-I was interested to hear of the use of magnetite in connection with the copper smelter. I am interested in the mining of magnetite, but was not aware that it had been used at all' by the copper metallurgists.

A study of spatial relations between uranium and other metal deposits and hydro thermally altered rocks in western Colorado demonstrated districtwide and regional zoning. The pattern was later found repeated elsewhere in the Western Hemisphere Cordillera. District mineralization centers are pipelike bodies of pervasively altered rock from which intensity-temperature-pressure gradients decreased outwardly. Uranium occurs in several zonal environments but usually is economic only in outermost zones. The general similarity of zones throughout the tectoni-cally and metallogenically uniform Cordillera may reflect a consistent hydrothermal process involving zoning. By determining positions of zones it should be possible to select for examination the most favorable small portions of districts or provinces. Mineralogical zoning has been discussed by Lindgren,l3 Graton,lo Emmons,' Blanchard,' Park and many others. It is commonly found to some extent in most mineralized areas. The existence of nonmetallic alteration envelopes around lode metal deposits and their relation to metallization were first emphasized by Lovering,l4 Burbank, Sales and Meyer," Sales,2o McKinstry,I7 Lovering and others15 and Schmitt. Also, large areas of nonmetallic alteration containing porphyry-type replacement metal disseminations have long been recognized and are described by Schwartz,25-28 Kerr and others" and Gilully. In some districts, e. g., Bingham Canyon, Utah, and Santa Rita, N.M., base metal lode deposits and their alteration envelopes are zoned around large altered areas which contain porphyry copper replacement disseminations; however, the spatial and genetic relations between lodes and replacement disseminations and their associated alterations do not seem to have received sufficient attention. Bodies of altered rock containing porphyry-type replacement disseminations are many times larger than the alteration envelopes containing lode deposits. The two types are rarely superimposed. They occur adjacent to or independent of one another, but they are believed to be related through the mechanism of zoning as suggested by Gabelman and Boyer. 5'6 Most of the significant lode metal deposits are distributed around central pipelike bodies of strong, pervasive, nonmetallic alteration which may or may

No corisideration of control would be complete without discussion of that new tool of the analytical chemist and inspector, the quartz spectrograph. Just as there is an increased appreciation of the possible applications of the die-casting process and of die castings, so too is there, slowly but surely, of the spectrograph. At present the role of the instrument might well be compared with that of brass or magnesium die castings. Neither is as widely understood or known as they will be. Product specifications are increasing and are getting more explicit and often more rigid. The designer, metallurgist and production engineer or superintendent will be forced to depend more and more on the chemical laboratory. Sampling, as well as analyses, testing and inspection problems will grow. The chemical laboratory must meet its increased responsibility and use of the spectrograph will become more common. Advantages of increased precision, greater speed, lessened labor and often lower costs cannot be ignored. It will be the purpose of this paper in part to outline the respective fields of chemical and spectrographic analyses and to indicate where one may overlap the other and in part to indicate certain possible sources of contamination of zinc-base die-cast alloys in particular. Composition Aluminum.-Aluminum die die castings are expected to conform to the specifications of the Amcrican Society for Testing Materialslt and the Society of Automotive Engineers2. The A.S.T.M. has recognized seven aluminum alloys in Tentative Specification B85-33-T. TWO are straight silicon and the remainder are of the copper-silicon type of which alloys VIII and IX have in addition respectively 2 and 4 per cent of nickel, but unlike the others are not covered by S.A.E. as well. Reply to discussion of the paper of C. W. Washburne, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1914 (Trans., xlviii, 687 to 694 (1914)). C. W. WASHBURNE, New York, N. Y. (communication to the Secretary*).-Professor Lane makes an interesting contribution to the study. of chloride waters, in saying that calcium chloride waters occur not only in the greenstones of the Lake Superior copper mines, but also in the interbedded -felsitic conglomerates and "in far-removed sandstones, e.g., near Whitefish lake, and Ontonagon, in the Michigan iron mines, and in the Storm King granite." Surely these are not connate waters preserved from the Algonkian sea, assuming that the Algonkian sediments are marine rather than continental. Finding the same type of water in the Storm King granite points rather toward an abyssal source. The possible connection of these waters with the magma of the greenstone is immaterial, although some basic calcic magma is the most probable source. It is to be expected that the ascending water of the region would be found not only in the greenstones, but in all the rocks which it could penetrate. The ascent of water of this kind along vertical passages, and the consequent addition of a common ion: to the circulating sedimentary salt solutions, would explain the precipitation and localization of the "giant, concretionary" salt plugs of the Gulf Coast, without making the ex-excessive demand for an improbable quantity of salt in the adjacent sediments that is required by the unmodified theory of Harris. With-out such a precipitating medium most of the dissolved sodium chloride would have been lost by passing on to the surface without precipitation. The base to which the chlorine ions were attached is immaterial, providing they were sufficiently concentrated, but the presence of the chlorides of calcium and magnesium in the solutions is indicated by the associated bodies of secondary dolomite.

FOR many years there has been no book that adequately represented the present state of the art of coal preparation-an art that has been rapidly changing during the passing years, and particularly during the last ten or fifteen years. In fact, changes of preparation have been so rapid that no book could keep abreast of their progress, and even the Proceedings of the technical societies have not been able to do so. It has been the intention of this committee and of the editor to make this book as nearly up to date as possible and to make it one that would appeal primarily to operating men, while at the same time adequately showing the theory back of the many processes used. The start of the war and the increased calls upon the time of the authors selected for the various chapters have slightly dimmed the brightness of the ideal intended, but the result undoubtedly brings the practice of preparation and its literature closer together than they ever have been before. It is the hope of the committee that this book will be useful both to those whose daily work is concerned with preparation and to consumers who use the product produced at the many fine and up-to-date coal plants throughout the country, which are now producing, as they always have done, all the coal needed by this country in its greatest crisis. While the committee has exercised a general supervision over the preparation of the various chapters, all of the correspondence and edi¬torial work have been done by Prof. David R. Secretary E. H. Benjamin, of the California Miners' Association, has proposed and begun, in co-operation with the testing laboratory of the University of California, at Berkeley, a series of tests which should prove of great interest and practical use to all persons making extensive application of steel wire cables, and especially to miners who run them in deep mines. Mr. Benjamin is endeavoring to obtain pieces of cable both new, and old and worn, from every deep mine of importance on the Pacific Coast, together with all the data obtainable concerning their manufacture and particular use. Pieces from each sample will be broken ill the laboratory before mentioned: and as far as possible the effects of winding around drums or pulleys ; of sudden starting and stopping when loaded; of heavy shocks, and of the general wear and tear of the cables, will be ascertained by these tests. The Olsen testing-machine of 200,000 pounds capacity will be used to break the cables, and the rupturing force, in different instances, will be applied slowly and also rapidly, in order to make the tests comparable as far as possible with the practical use of the cables themselves. All information and data available should be obtained for each specimen sent to the laboratory, the name of the manufacturer, the date of making, strength of cable when new and unrusted, as well as the circumstances and conditions of the practical use of the cable. Having this information before us, we shall be able to tell, approximately at least, the effects of age, rust, wear and tear, shocks, etc.; and perhaps be enabled to draw the line of limitation beyond which it would be no longer safe to use a cable of known manufacture. Moreover, by means of such tests we may, perhaps, he able to recommend worn cables for other uses, less severe in character, thereby prolonging the life of their effective usefulness. THIS paper summarizes the results obtained from the preliminary cementing of wells in an effort to cut off the bottom water. The object of this work was two-fold: (1) To prevent the oil sand from becoming flooded. (2) To plug off bottom water, thereby preserving the individual well and reclaiming production. Valuable suggestions and help have been given by the following named: Messrs. Kyle and La Velle, of the U. S. Bureau of Mines; Magnolia Petroleum Co.; Freed Oil and Gas Co. The cementing work was carried out under the personal supervision of L. J. Snyder. In an unpublished paper on the "Water Problem in the Augusta Field," S. K. Clark reaches the following conclusions: (1) That the great amount of water present is bottom water, occurring in the Varner sand, the main producing or the 2500-ft. horizon. (2) That the only striking connection between structure and water is in the area of the marked fault on the Ralston, E. C. Varner, and F. Varner leases in sections 8, 9, 16 and 17. (3) That the oil occurs in porous streaks, generally separated by fine-grained, well cemented sand, which is barren. Possibly two, or three such pay streaks may be found. That under a pay, fine-grained sand occurs, which is presumably barren at the time of drilling, but soon reveals water. The writer takes partial exception to the last point, because well defined shale, slate, lime, or hard sand breaks have been encountered in a great many cases, separating the pay streaks under which water is often found. This is not an invariable occurrence, as cases have been noted when the oil has been followed immediately by water in the same stratum. In an effort to overcome the water menace, the following methods of plugging were tried: (1) Plugging with wood, lead, and limit plugs. (2) Plugging with sand pumpings.

This study presents results of investigations in a small model of segregation in discharged fill slurry, the quantity of solids escaping in the drain liquid, and the relationship of solids to slurry concentration and discharge rate. Compressibilities of fine fill material, in dry and wet states and individual size fractions, are compared. Two terms are frequently used in describing the hydraulic placement of fill material underground: hydraulic stowing is mostly associated with the underground flushing of coarse-sized fill material, such as coal washery refuse; while hydraulic backfilling refers to placement of small-sized fill material, e.g., sand or classified mill tailings, mainly in metal mines. Characteristically, in backfilling, only a few hours may elapse between the time the material is hoisted as ore and redeposited as fill underground. Hydraulic filling was first used about 100 years ago to control subsidence in coal mines. It was subsequently adopted in many mining operations all over the world, but its basic concepts have never been adequately studied and analyzed. This is not surprising, when one considers the number of variables involved in the hydraulic backfilling operation. Recently, much work has been done on the problems of transportation of slurries in pipes. Comparatively less research work has been done concerning the physical properties of fill material (compressibility, cementation, permeability, etc.). Very little work has been done on the problems of fill placing, distribution, and segregation of fill material discharged in the mine void. It is the purpose of this paper to explore two of the basic, lesser known aspects of filling: segregation and compressibility in discharged fill slurry. Difficulties in observing the behavior of hydraulic fill slurry during the pouring operation underground, and insufficient knowledge to conduct any kind of meaningful theoretical analysis, suggest experimental model studies. The tests described in the following sections were conducted in the Rock Mechanics Laboratory of the Department of Mining at Penn State.

Many excellent papers, descriptive of the milling and smelting of every kind of commercial ores, the refining of virgin metals, the casting into various shapes demanded by the trade, the rolling into shapes best suited to the factory machinery and the making of composition alloys to suit every requirement have been issued by the many technical societies dealing with non-ferrous metals. It is a wonderful collection of papers, of which the mining and metallurgical engineers may well be proud, but strange as it may seem, metallurgists in general appear to take the stand that when they have delivered suitable alloys to the foundry and rolled products to the factory their duty to write papers has ceased, at least in so far as the A. I. M. E. is concerned. Still we read in the daily papers that the mining companies are absorbing metal-manufacturing industries. The purpose of this paper is to describe the reclaiming of non-ferrous scrap metals at manufacturing plants, taking as an example the automobile industry. Collection and Disposition of Scrap Until about five years ago, much of the factory scrap, with little or no preliminary treatment, was sold to secondary-metal smelters. Of late years the factory salvage department has become an important part, of the plant in reclaiming everything of value and incidentally does much of the work formerly done by the smelters. Like most good things, it is sometimes overdone, and much work is done at the factory with inexperienced men that could be done much better by experienced skilled labor at the custom smelting plants. Employees of the salvage department collect the waste products in all departments at the source and in that way avoid much contamination. Every reasonable precaution is taken to keep the scrap clean. It is hand-sorted, cut, burned, magnetized, concentrated, separated or compressed, as the case may be, preparatory for re-use in the plant or for selling to others.

The majority of the work done in the field of rock mechanics uses as a basis for analysis the classical linear theory of elasticity. Most workers in rock mechanics realize that removing the assumptions of homogeneity and isotropicity will bring the analysis of stress-strain relationships for geologic materials closer to reality. However, the algebra involved in reducing these restrictions is usually heavy. It is the purpose of this paper to relax the condition of isotropicity to that of orthotropicity and examine the sensitivity of this change for some simple geometries. In addition some necessary relationships between stress and strain for orthotropic materials will be developed. The recent years have seen an increasing interest in the field of rock mechanics. This is amply demonstrated by the number of articles appearing in the technical literature. The majority of these articles use as a basis for analysis the classical linear theory of elasticity. In addition, the assumptions that the material under consideration is elastically homogeneous and isotropic reduce the number of constants necessary to write an analytical relationship between stress and strain to two, e.g., Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio. Most workers in the area of rock mechanics realize that removing the conditions of homogeneity and isotropicity will bring the analysis of stress-strain relationship for geologic materials closer to reality. However, the algebra involved in analysis without imposing these restrictions is usually heavy. It is the purpose of this paper to relax the condition of isotropicity to that of orthotropicity and examine the sensitivity of this change on stress concentration for some simple geometries. In addition, it is shown that the expression for maximum stress concentration for some simple geometries considered can be further simplified if further assumptions are made. The maximum stress concentration, under these additional simplifying assumptions, is shown graphical1y. In the linear theory of elasticity, generalized Hooke's law assumes the following form

The revolution in equipment for blasthole drilling, ore loading, and ore hauling has been so rapid over the last ten years that it has generated an important new profit potential in the mining industry. With the new high-capacity machinery now available, it is possible for a mining enterprise to earn a profit from larger and lower grade orebodies than ever before despite the ever-increasing burden of rising costs. Just what such equipment can accomplish when coupled with improved mining practice has been demonstrated with startling success at the No. 1 mine of Minerva Oil Co. near Cave-in-Rock in Hardin County, Ill. The No. 1 is an underground operation which has been producing fluorspar and zinc ores and concentrates continuously since 1944. A few years ago, when the mine neared the familiar cross-roads where rising costs, increasing tonnages, and relatively static product prices converge, company officials decided to bolster the operation with new mobile equipment. They chose three machines which proved so effective that output at the No. 1 doubled between 1963 and 1965,while costs dropped by about 40% in the same period.

Formation damage, i.e.. reduclion in permeability, has been generally attribuled to clay minerals which expand or disperse upon contact with water that is less saline than the connate water. Luboratory, studies show that penneahility reduction can also occur in formalions containing only nonexpandable clays such as illite or kaolinite, and can be caused also by changes in pH. Furthermore, pH changes can damage even formations that are essentially free of clays. It is suggested that permeability reduction is due to the small passages being blocked by particles, which may be dispersed clays, cemenlion material or other fine parricles. These particles are dislodged by dispersion of clays due to changes in salinity or by dissolution of calcareous cement by acids, or of silicaceous cement by alkaline solutions. In working with reservoir cores, it was found that extracted cores damaged more easily and extensively than nonextracted cores. The extent of damage depended also on tenlperatltre. INTRODUCTION Permeability is an important property of porous media and has been the subject of many studies by engineers and geologists. Many of these studies are conccrned with formation damage, i.e., reduction in permeability, resulting from exposure of oil-producing formations to water substantially less saline than the connate water. This effect causes understandable concern since during drilling, completion and production phases formations are often exposed to fresh water. The damage resulting from contact with relatively fresh water has been attributed to expansion and dispersion oF clay minerals. During laboratory investigation of the use of NaOH as a wettability reversal agent to increase oil recovery from oil-wet reservoirs, several cores used in the displacement studies suffered loss in permeability. Despite the traditional usage of NaOH for conditioning aqueous mud systems, the role of the caustic filtrate in wellbore damage seems to have been overlooked. Browning2 as recently reported on the effects of NaOH in dispersing clay minerals but he was concerned only with complications that may arise in drilling massive shale beds. The following study was made to examine the role of pH and salinity changes in core damage. Where cores from reservoirs were used, tests were performed with extracted and nonextracted cores both at room and reser- voir temperatures, since it was felt that the test environment and core condition may affect the results. Because of its limited coverage and exploratory nature, this study is not intended to provide answers to field formation damage problems. It is hoped that it will encourage research into new aspects of the permeability reduction problems, particularly those allied to new recovery and production processes. PROCEDURE In all permeability tests, fluids were pumped through the cores at a constant volumetric rate. Only deaerated fluids and reagent grade chemicals were used. The fluids were passed through two ultrafine filters before injection to remove any entrained particles. The cores, with the exception of the unconsolidated cores, were mounted in Hassler holders. Water was used to transmit pressure to the sleeve. The inlet endpiece had two entry ports which permitted scavenging one fluid with another to avoid any mixing in the small holdup volume. The cores were flushed with CO2 gas, evacuated for 5 to 6 hours and saturated with the first liquid at a pressure of 1,000 psi for 24 hours to eliminate any free gas from the cores. Pressure differences up to 20 psi were measured by transducers, calibrated in inches of water and continuously recorded. For greater pressure drops, gauges were used. All reservoir cores were cleaned with a light refined mineral oil, then with heptane, and finally dried with CO2. Compatibility tests showed that no precipitates formed when mineral oil and the crudes were mixed. Some cores were extracted in Dean-Stark-type solvent extractors using xylene and trichloroethane and dried in a vacuum oven at 450F. Each test consisted of a sequence of water, test solution, and again water flow. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION STUDIES IN BEREA CORES Salinity Contrast Berea cores 2-in. in diameter and 12-in. long were cut from sandstone quarried in Cleveland, Ohio. The clay minerals were identified by X-ray diffraction to be chlorite, kaolinite, illite and incerlayered illite. Flow of fresh water or 30,000 ppm brinc does not cause any permeability reduction (Fig. 1). However, after injection of brine the core is readily damaged by fresh water. Damage starts almost instantly as the fresh water injection is begun, and at a cumulative injection of 1.2 PV fresh water, the permeability has dropped from 190 to 0.9 md. J. E. Harris (Berkeley Nucclear Laboratories, England)—Greenfield et al.11 attribute abrupt changes in slope of their log o/log i curves for heat-treated Mg/0.5 pet Zr alloy (zA) to &apos;atmosphere&apos; locking. It is proposed here that a more reasonable explanation of the apparent strengthening at low rates of strain can be based on precipitation either during the preanneal or during the creep tests. All the tests were carried out above 0.5 Tm where solute atmospheres are likely to be largely evaporated2 and can migrate sufficiently rapidly so as not to impose any &apos;drag&apos; on the moving dislocations. McLean3 has derived an expression for determining the temperature Tc above which, due to the high-migration rate of the atmospheres, Cottrell or Suzuki locking can play no part in determining creep strength. This expression, which holds for an applied shear stress of not greater than 5 X 107 dynes per sq cm is: Tc/Tm= 7/6.8 - log10? where i = secondary creep rate The values for T, corresponding to the maximum and minimum reported creep rates at each temperature have been calculated from the data of Greenfield et al. These are given in Table VII. All the test temperatures were above T,, the margin being greater for the higher temperatures and for the lower strain rates where the breaks in the log s/log ? curves occurred. Dorn and his collaborators14, 17 have studied systematically the effect of solute hardening on the creep properties of an A1/3.2 at. pet Mg alloy. In the temperature range where strain aging occurred in tensile tests, abnormally high-activation energies for secondary creep were obtained but at temperatures above 0.43 Tm, solute alloying did not have any effect on the creep parameters. Moreover, there have been no reports of any strain aging phenomenon during elevated temperature tensile tests with ZA material.18 Instead of the observed strengthening being due to atmosphere locking, it is now proposed that precipitates play an important role in enhancing the creep strength of the material. There are two possibilities—precipitation of zirconium hydride during the high-temperature preanneal and/or precipitation of the hydride or a-zirconium during creep. On the basis of the former the results can be interpreted in terms of a critical stress being necessary to force the dislocations through or over preexisting precipitates. From the latter, if the strengthening is due to pre- cipitation during the test then hardening should be associated with a critical strain rate. At low rates of strain, time is available during the tests for precipitation to occur either directly onto dislocations (thus pinning them) or generally throughout the matrix (which would impede dislocation movements). Examination of the data of Greenfield et al. suggests that both mechanisms may be operative since they observed precipitation during creep and also found that their alloys exhibited high-creep strength in the early stages of the low-stress tests, i.e., before creep-induced precipitation had time to occur. It is not easy to understand why they considered that precipitation of zirconium hydride is unlikely to occur at 600°C while it can take place in tests in air at as low a temperature as 200°C. Precipitation of the hydride during the preanneal cannot be ruled out merely on the basis of metallographic examination. Hydride precipitates in ZA type alloys are very small and can only be accurately resolved in the electron microscope.9 For example, in this laboratory20 hydride platelets with major dimensions <(1/10) µ have been observed by electron transmission through thin film specimens of hy-drogenated ZA material. Complex interactions between dislocations and such particles are illustrated in Fig. 12. Additional evidence for precipitation during pre-annealing is provided by the data presented in Greenfield&apos;s Fig. 1 and Table IT. These show that the creep strength at 200o and 400°C increases with the time of preanneal at 600°C. Such increases cannot be explained on the basis of increases in grain size alone for further improvements in strength were observed when the material was annealed for longer times than that required to stabilize the grains. Although the main discussion is confined to ZA material, similar arguments can be used against the strain aging hypothesis proposed to explain the binary Mg/Mn alloy data. In this case no precipitation is possible during the preanneal, but precipitation-hardening during creep can occur.

The Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. had an orebody at Miami, Ariz., of close to 100,000,000 tons of low-grade copper ore, and the method of mining this ore most profitably was of great importance. The selection of a method was practically limited to a "top-slicing," a "shrinkage-stope" or a "caving" method. The "top-slicing" method would give a high extraction of the developed ore, at a high mining cost, and the "shrinkage-stope" or "caving" methods a lower extraction of the developed ore, at a lower mining cost. Ore-Drawing Tests To decide on the method to be used it was necessary to know about what extraction of the ore could be obtained by the "shrinkage-stope" or " caving " methods. As no definite information regarding the,question was available at the time, C. E. Mills, the general manager, thought that some information could be obtained by experimenting in drawing ore, covered with capping, from an experimental box. Some work had already been done along these lines by W. C. Browning for the Inspiration Copper Co. and by myself for the Live Oak Development Co. The idea was to represent as nearly as possible, in the experimental box, the conditions within an area of caved stopes of caved ore all ready for drawing. That is, the area was supposed to represent a semibroken mass with the capping above it in the same condition and ready to follow the ore downward as it was drawn out of the chutes under the ore. To represent the above condition, in the experimental box, crushed ore from the mine was placed in it to a given height, and red barren capping from the mine was placed on top of the ore. The Experimental Box The experimental box shown in Fig. 1 was made of wood and glass. The glass was used for the sides so that the drawing action of the outside row of chutes could be seen and noted, the latter being cut in the center by the glass sides. The possible sources of potash salts in the United States have been considered from many points of view during the last several years, but it is only within the last two or three months that the situation has become acute. We import from Germany, the only sourcc of large supply, more than $10,000,000 worth of potash salts annually, and this business has been badly crippled by the European war. If there was ever a time in our industrial existence when the necessity of providing for our own needs was more acute than it is now, we are not aware of it. One has only to study the price lists of chemicals sent out by the large supply houses to see the change wrought within a very short time. Whether or not these prices are to maintain for a considerable time, no one can say; but it appears to be probable that we shall not see prices materially lower for a period of uncomfortable length, to say the least. It is not my purpose at this time to discuss the various sources of supply of potash salts that have been suggested or recommended. Some of them might afford a pleasing relief but all of them combined would not affect the situation seriously. If we are to have our own sources of potash salts, they will have to compare, in some efficient manner, with the sources upon which we have drawn during the last 20 or 30 years; i.e., they must exist in minable quantities. It seems to me to be quite idle to speculate upon our domestic sources of potash if those sources are not of a character similar to those upon which we have so long depended. A few thousand or, perhaps, a few hundred thousand dollars&apos; worth of chemically derived potash may be produced under the stress of present conditions, but when we consider that each year demands more than $10,000,000 worth, we must look to underground sources; we must look to mines similar to the famous Stassfurt and Halle deposits. If we cannot mine potash salts, we shall have to do without them for a while.

IT is characteristic of most scientific investigators that they are not satisfied with the discovery of new facts, no matter how curious or unexpected, but that along with the factual discovery there is a constant effort to understand It appears that. one&apos;s interest in, and satisfaction with, the discovery of an array of news experimental facts is enormously increased if one has at the same time a theory or hypothesis guiding one&apos;s expectation of what sort of new experimental discovery may lie around the corner Conversely, as a theoretical physicist one&apos;s satisfaction with his theory is greatly enhanced if along with the development of the theory can go the discovery of new experimental facts, confirming or perhaps modifying the theory as it grows Of course, there have been long and stretches in the history of physics in which new data of unquestioned ultimate importance ham e piled up, without much inspiration or illumination in the way of understanding For 50 years spectroscopy had such an and history, but how irksome this was felt to be is plainly shown by the almost audible relief that greeted the first success by Bohr in injecting understanding into the situation, and by the fresh rush of experimenters into this field when the prospect of understanding had once been offered The investigations in the field of high pressure, which have occupied me for a long time,1 until the last few years have been in very much the Same sort of situation as spectroscopy before the advent of Bohr A great many kids, of data were collected for a great many solid and liquid substances, and there could be no question of the importance of these data, because the uniform change of dimensions produced by hydrostatic pressure is perhaps the simplest conceivable type of alteration to which a body can be subjected But except for a few isolated flashes, there was no theoretical illumination, so that it had to be to a large extent the enthusiasm of the collector that kept me going However, within the last few years the wave-mechanics theory of solids has progressed so rapidly that

A new approach to an old problem has made it possible to do in a a tively short period what has not been accomplished in the past three quarters of a century using strictly experimental methods. A theoretical study was made of the underlying principles whereby a jet is formed by a shaped charge and of the mechanism of the penetration of the target by that jet. It was found that there are more than 10, and perhaps as many as 15 variables affectin!? the performance of the shaped charge. Only a few calculations are necessary to show that it is physically impossible to investigate all of these variables experimentally. The shaped charge theory has been extended to include a previously little-understood mechanism in high explosive phenomena; namely, low order detonation. By superimposing a high order detonation on a zone already undergoing low order detonation, all appreciable improvement in performance is accomplished. The development of a design wherehy these phenomena are coordinated in such a way as to develop a jet which is tailored to meet the specific target requirement will be described in detail. The shortcomings or even impossibility of strictly experimental techniques will be illustrated by a discussion of the development of a special-purpose explosive charge. INTRODUCTION In an article appearing in the May, 1888 issue of Scribner&apos;s Magazine, Charles E. Monroe described his early experiments with gun cotton (Fig. 1) which led to his name being most fre-quently connected with our present-day shaped charge. Although the sunken letters or "cavities" in Mon- roe&apos;s gun cotton were not lined, they produced some penetration of an iron plate. The credit for the lined shaped charge, however, should rightfully go to Dr. R. W. Wood of the Physics Dept. of Johns Hopkins University, who was responsible for first discovering the fact that a metal liner in a cavity of explosive gave high velocity fragments and/or jets of metal. This discovery was made by Dr. Wood inadvertently while investigating an accidental death resulting from an electric blasting cap.
