CHROMIUM is but one hundred and thirty years of age-a mere youngster as related to many metals that' have speeded world progress. It was Vauquelin of France who proved conclusively that the so called red lead of. Siberia contained a new element. The variety and characteristic colors of the compounds suggested the name chromium. He also succeeded in reducing oxide of chromium to the metallic form and described the product as very brittle, infusible, needle- like crystals on which acids had very feeble action. His metal was not pure chromium, of course; it must have contained appreciable carbon in the combined form as a result of reducing the oxide by carbon at high temperatures. Vauquelin's description in 1798 of this work is a gem-indeed, literally, he went so far as to discover the presence of chromium oxide in the emerald. The metallic product did not seem to interest Vauquelin greatly, but a new chemical industry began shortly after his discoveries.

COMPRESSED air is one of the most useful tools that the mine operator has at his disposal. It is clean, nontoxic, easily handled, and can be distributed anywhere that a man can drag a length of rubber hose. Without it a great deal of drilling would still be a laborious hand process, and although the John Henry of legendary fame could beat a mechanical drill, John Henrys are few and far between, and in the long run the air drill is the victor. As a general rule, horizontal compressors are lubricated by mechanical lubricators, which furnish oil to the cylinder walls, whereas vertical units are splash lubricated. In most horizontal machines oil is introduced at the top center of the piston, from which point it can run down and lubricate the rest of the piston. Some large units introduce oil at more than one point on the cylinder wall, the necessity for this and the number of points of introduction depending upon the size of the cylinder.

In the extreme northeast corner of the State of Washington, on the Canadian border, lies the Metaline mining district. This district is old in history, but young in production. The Metaline district is a zinc-lead area of the replacement type in dolomite and limestone. The ore bodies of the Josephine horizon are in many ways similar to the ore bodies of the famous Tri-State zinc fields. The beds are faulted and folded and have varyng low dips in varying directions, and underlie large areas of the district. Production started in 1927 on a very limited basis. The property is now mining and milling 700 tons per day. The mine is opened by adit tunnels and a vertical shaft. As the ore horizons gained depth, it was necessary to sink inclines to follow the ore horizon (see Fig 1). From 1927 to date, approximately 600,000 ft of diamond drill was put down This work indicated that sufficient tonnage existed to justify a redesigning of the whole operation, surface and under- ground. AMONG the industrial motion pic¬tures released in the last year of possible interest to people in the mining industry are the following: "A New World Through Chemistry," made by the public relations department of E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co., Wilmington, Del. This film, which is in sound and color, interprets in twenty minutes of narration and ingenious photography many of chemistry's newest developments. It may be borrowed either in 16-mm. size on an 800-ft. reel, or 35-mm. size on a 2000¬ft. reel, the only charge being the cost of returning the film. Douglas D. Rothacker, 729 Seventh Ave., New York City, is prepared to loan free of charge except for transportation each way several films prepared in the plants of the International Nickel Co., 16 mm. with sound. These include: "Nickel High Lights," 35 minutes; "Nickel Mining," 18 minutes; "Nickel Smelting," 18 minutes; "Nickel Refining," 9 minutes; and "Copper Refining," 6 minutes.

The A. I. M. E. Subcommittee on Bituminous Mining has been trying for several years to secure the information that was collected by the Marquette Cement Manufacturing &. on the subsidence of its property caused by mining coal beneath it. The Marquette company was willing to have these data used, but it was impossible to obtain them because the records had been filed away. About two years ago these records became available and the engineering data presented herewith were compiled from them by R. L. Auchmuty, assisted by L. E. Young, who was connected with the collection of the information. On account of the cost, it is impossible to reproduce all of the data here, although the original information is on file with the records of the Committee on Ground Movement and Subsidence. The accompanying charts show representative and average data and give only the engineering information with enough description to tell how it was obtained. It is hoped that all of those connected with the original case will participate in the discussion that this will bring forth. Howard N. Eavenson, Chairman, Subcommittee on Bituminous Coal Mining. PRobably the most complete records of subsidence due to coal mining in the United States are those compiled by the Marquette Cement Manufacturing Co. at LaSalle, 111. These records, covering a period of more than three years, were compiled and used as evidence during the suit of the Marquette Cement Manufacturing Co. vs. the Oglesby Coal Co. at Oglesby, LaSalle County, Ill., in which the cement company successfully endeavored to stop the coal company from mining under its property. Fig. 1 shows a typical section of the geological formation. The cement company was mining the LaSalle limestone which lies about 125 ft. under the surface. The limestone is 30 to 35 ft. thick and underlain by about 15 ft. of shale. The cement company was mining about 20 ft. of the limestone, and in some places 10 to 12 ft. of the underlying shale, by the room and pillar method. The mining of the limestone always preceded the mining of the shale. The coal company was mining by longwall advance methods the NO. 2 seam of coal 42 in. thick underlying the limestone bed by 435 to 470 ft. AS always when metallurgical operations are conducted within or close to agricultural and stock-raising regions, the question of damage due to fume and smoke presented itself when the Cerro de Pasco Copper Corporation's new smelter commenced to operate in La Oroya in 1922, For more than twenty years the Corporation had operated its old plant close to Cerro de Pasco without encountering difficulties from smoke claims, owing to the fact that it was in an open plain where more or less constant air currents carried and dissipated the smoke over large areas, affording ample dilution. But Oroya is in a deep canyon formed by four contributing valleys up and down which the smoke travels for long distances in a more or less concentrated form. Though the altitude of Oroya is more than 12,000 ft., and the surrounding country rises to much greater elevations, nevertheless there exists there a large and important stock-raising industry and also a considerable development in agriculture, consisting of the cultivation of potatoes, barley, etc.

EXPANSION initiated during and after the war has placed industrial plants in new areas and increased reduction and manufacturing facilities in communities already established. With added expansion interest has grown in possible area contamination from waste products. Evolved flue waste contains many chemical contaminants that may or may not cause concern; however, atmospheric pollution has always been a problem to industrial communities. For some time effects attributed to small quantities of compounds of fluorine in various waste gases have been studied by industrial, medical, agricultural, and associated interests.1'2 Aside from an article by Churchill, Rowley, and Martin in 1948," little has been published on the subject of fluorine in coal except by foreign investigators. The first indication of fluorine compounds in coal was noted in England in 1934 by R. Lessing,4,5 who found that the presence of fluorine in Midland and West County coals was definitely established by etching of glass and by severe corrosion of porcelain fillings in a gas works scrubber. Etching of glass in a direct contact annealing kiln initiated research, and in 1944 four papers were published by H. E. Crossley,6-9 giving results of investigations of fluorine in coal of England by the Fuel Research Board, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. These investigations studied methods of determining fluorine, the quantities present in various coal deposits, the geographical distribution of fluorine in British coals, occurrence of fluorine in minerals associated with coal, amounts of fluorine compared to other constituents of coal, the nature of fluorine compounds, and industrial significance of fluorine in coal. It was shown that British coals contain from 5 to 200 ppm of fluorine, which is probably present as fluorapatite [Ca10F2(PO4)6], often written as [3Ca3P2O8.CaF2]. The fluorapatite is intimately associated with shale in some coals and can often be separated from these coals along with the shales. H. E. Crossley8 also reported no correlation between the amounts of chlorine, sulfur, or ash and the amount of fluorine in different coals. He found, however, a relationship between the content of fluorine and phosporus in many British coals. Thus it should be possible to anticipate likely fluorine-rich coals from existing data giving phosphorus content. "The mountains of Utah contain one of the largest deposits of high grade bituminous coal in the world. According to the United States Geological Survey, there are 13,130 square miles of land known to contain workable coal, and these extensive fields contain 196,000,000,000 tons of coal. More remarkable than the extent of the coal fields is the thickness of the coal beds. Over three-fourths of the output of coal in Utah is recovered from beds ranging from 8 to 17 feet in thickness, as compared to one-eighth of the output of the entire country from such beds. In 1917, Utah mined one-third of its coal from seams at least 16 feet thick, compared to one-half of one per cent of the total bituminous output of the country from like seams.Coal at Wales, in Sanpete County, and in the vicinity of Coalville, Utah, was, it is reported, the first discovered by white men in the state. Wales claims the distinction of having produced the first coal mined in Utah. Two men, who had been coal miners in Wales, learned of the coal from an old Indian chief who called it ""rock that would burn."" In 1857, the town of Wales was founded and coal mined, and in 1858 some coke was manufactured and hauled by ox team to Salt Lake City. South of Wales is Castle Valley, in Wasatch Plateau field. From 50 to 60 miles of the Old Spanish Trail from Santa Fe, New Mexico, to Monterey, California, lies in Castle Valley. The coal in this field may or may not have been known at the time the trail was used extensively. The first published reference to this coal, however, was made by a party of the Corps of Topographic Engineers in their journal for October 11, 1853.After the completion of the Union Pacific railroad in 1869, mining on a commercial scale was attempted. In 1876 the Utah and Pleasant Valley railroad commenced operations between Scofield, in Carbon county, and Springville, Utah county, and following the year 1878, when the Rio Grande Western railway began construction through the Carbon county field, development increased until in 1900, when large smelters commenced operations in Salt Lake valley and gave coal mining in Utah an impetus that first carried it to an annual output of a million tons. During the past fifteen years many new mines have been opened, and with the construction of the Utah railway, an exclusive coal road, from the properties of the United States Fuel company in Carbon and Emery counties to connect with the Union Pacific system at Provo, the state reached a maximum production of 6,005, l 99 tons in 1920."

There were 110 important discoveries of either oil or gas in Co1orado in 1935. There was, however, further development of the Price structure in southern Colorado and developments since the first of the year indicate. that an important oil field may be in the making. The discovery of oil in Price structure was made by the Oil City Petroleum Co. late ill Novem-ber, 1934, in its No. 2 Garnett in the northeast corner of lot 3 in the SW.¼ of sec. 25-33N.-2E. This well developed a good showing of oil in Dakota sand at 970 ft. The hole filled up 15 ft. with 40° gravity oil overnight and after standing for several days the oil level was 400 ft. higher. As a result of the discovery of oil by the No. 2 Garnett, three wells were drilled by the William E. Hughes Estate. Two of these wells had good showings of oil and may make good producers but it is doubtful whether they will produce the estimated capacity of 500 bbl. each with which they have been credited. Although the Hughes Estate wells have been completed for some time, they have not been given thorough production tests because of the isolated position of the field and lack of proper facilities. The. first well drilled by the Hughes Estate was located on the west side of the Navajo River on the downthrow side of a fault. It encoun-tered water ill the Dakota sand at 1285 ft, and was abandoned in green shales of the Morrison at 1405 ft. Well cuttings from the Dakota sand showed some evidence of once containing oil, so a 1ocation was selected for No. 2 Fee on the east side of the river and on the upthrow side of the fault. Oil was discovered in Dakota sands ill 1935 by Continental Oil Co. in its No. 3 Hoye, NW.NW.NE. of sec. 34-9N.-78W., on the South McCallum anticline in North Park, Jackson County, Colo., but on account of heavy flows of carbon dioxide gas under high pressure it has been impossible for the company to get an accurate gage of the oil production. The freezing action of expanding carbon dioxide makes the producing of the oil difficult and costly.

Planning quarry operations and control of the quality of rock materials at Hudson Cement Co. at East Kingston, N. Y., are special problems because of multiple uses for the stone and the great structural complexity of the rocks. Problems have been largely solved by detailed geologic work. These geologic studies have paid dividends in long and short range planning, in assessment of reserves, in vastly reduced cost of chemical analyses, and in reduced drilling costs. Limestones of the Hudson Valley outcrop along the Hudson River from Albany to Kingston. Old established cement companies are located just south of Catskill and just east and southeast of Hudson, N. Y. The new Atlantic Cement plant is being constructed at Ravena. Hudson Cement located at East Kingston, is a newcomer and is closest to the New York metropolitan area (Plate I).

FEW subjects have attracted the attention of metallurgists more than oxygen in steel. From the days of Mushet and Ledebui interest in this subject has been increasing, and as additional knowledge has become available, the problem has naturally grown more complex. Instead of using the simple term "oxygen" we now distinguish between iron oxide, silicates of various kinds, oxysulfides, oxygen as gas and oxygen in solid solution in steel. There are five general methods for determining oxides in steel: hydrogen reduction; vacuum fusion; various wet-extraction methods, including electrolytic methods; methods depending on volatilization of the iron away from the oxides; and metallographic methods. For oxygen in solid steel each of these methods has both advantages and disadvantages. The hydrogen-reduction method is of no use on steels above about 0.20 per cent. carbon; 1 furthermore, it gives only FeO and possibly some MnO. The vacuum-fusion method2 is expensive and gives total oxygen, with the exception of some A1203, and does not differentiate between the various oxides in which the oxygen exists. Most of the wet-extraction methods3 give only the more insoluble oxides SiO2 and A1203, though the iodine method gives MnO to an uncertain degree (information that may be more misleading then no information

DR. TILNEY, the great expert on the study of the development of the brain of human beings and animals, tells us that the greatest difference between the human brain and the brain of animals is that man alone has shown evidence of being able to predict the future. Just why he throws overboard the busy bee who lays up honey for the winter, the squirrel who gathers nuts, and the humble ant, I do not know. At any rate, it is nice to be assured by an authority that we have this power of prophecy. My own experience with attempting to prophesy the future has convinced me that our only possibility of being good prophets is to be good students of history.

The history of surface mining is essentially that of mining coal, copper, and iron ores and the non- metallic minerals, i.e. clays, gypsum, phosphate rock, sand, gravel and stone. The accompanying table comparing world production with that of the U. S. indicates that two thirds of the 8.8 billion tons of ores mined throughout the world come from surface operation. Assuming that the stripping ratio for surface mining in the U. S. applies equally to world production, then over 21 billion tons of waste, or a total of nearly 27 billion short tons of material are mined annually in the world by surface methods. Several factors are significant indicators of economic and technologic trends in surface mining. Among these are increasing production, a shift in emphasis from underground to surface mining, a decline in the grade and quality of some crude materials and, with few exceptions, an increase in the productivity of labor.

With the coming of the month of 'October the various sections are beginning active work for the winter. The Colorado, Washington, Montana, and New York Sections are all doing good work in raising funds for the hospital bed at Rheims which is to be a memorial to the members of the A. I. M. E. who gave their lives in the great war. We hope that all the other sections will begin to work with this object in view and will make even a better record than they did with the Belgian Relief Fund. It was with much regret that the President, Mrs. James F. Kemp, and the Secretary, Mrs. Sidney J. Jennings, were obliged to forego the pleasure of attending the Chicago meeting in September. They were, however, ably represented by Mrs. Arthur S. Dwight who gave an informal talk after which was formed the Illinois Section, which has our best wishes for all success-" Over the top and the best of luck!"

In situ mining is no longer a "last ditch" approach for recovery of uranium, but a proven and competitive method of exploiting sedimentary deposits. Today, in any feasibility study of uranium properties, the project manager would be prudent to compare the economics of in situ methods with conventional surface and underground techniques. In this comparison of in situ and open-pit mining, John J. Borkert and Carl E. Gerity of Occidental Minerals Corp., evaluated a group of hypothetical uranium deposits using the three most sensitive depositional characteristics of depth, size, and grade. Their conclusion: in situ is generally the better method to maximize total net profits and return on investment. At uranium values of $40 per pound, their analysis found open-pit mining to he unprofitable, generally, when stripping ratios were greater than 30:1, the deposit grade-thickness (GT) was 0.5 or less, or the ratio of depth to GT was greater than 200.

THE occurrence of copper ores at Garimenapenta, 14 59 min 30 sec N Lat., 79 33 min 10 sec E Long., in Nellore district, Madras State, India, has been examined and investigated on numerous occasions during the past two centuries.' No tangible orebody was ever located as a result of all the ex- tensive trenching and shafting done in the area by various agencies. However, during 1933 Messrs. Piepmeyer & Co., a German firm engaged by one of the leaseholders of the area, carried out an electrical survey using inductive methods.' On the basis of certain strong indications found in their survey, they recommended that the prospect be proved by drilling or shafting. But for want of financial backing no further work was carried out. When the Madras government more recently proposed investigation, Dr. Krishnan, then Supt. Within the last 15 years David Brown Gear Industries has manufactured approximately 200 large mill gears over 6m diam., 58 of them over 9 m and up to 12 m diam. The experience has not been without problems, due to a lack of clear understanding of the loads and stresses imposed on large gear wheels. American Gear Manufacturers Association (AGMA) practices suggest that a service factor be used for mill gears. But what is meant by "service factor"? The layman might be forgiven for believing that the term is synonymous with "safety factor," but this is certainly not true. The service factor is an aggregate of the following in some proportion: -An application factor, i.e., an allowance for the fact that systems do not run smoothly with uniform torque. -An ignorance factor covering the imperfections in the basic gear calculation. -Possibly a safety factor. In the following sections some of the ways in which the limits of applicability can be overstepped are discussed.

Mineral economists debate whether to call the deep-ocean nodules "manganese nodules," "nickel nodules," "polymetallic nodules," or even "ferro-manganese nodules." It is nickel and copper that are generally regarded as the main targets in the nodules. Processing considerations are thought to virtually dictate that Deepsea Ventures will produce high-purity manganese metal (at least if it follows a hydrogen chloride leach), whereas other groups have been focusing on the selective extraction of copper, nickel, cobalt, zinc, and molybdenum, while rejecting manganese to tails. Solvent extraction appears to be the primary multimetal extraction technique (except for manganese). These processing considerations indicate that metal production f, or Deepsea Ventures is essentially a co- product system (manganese recovery is necessary to recycle chloride ions) while the other groups can more easily approach the metals as selective co-products (e.g. recovering nickel and copper, and rejecting cobalt). Some zinc may be produced as a co-product, as it may have to be removed in the solvent extraction process.
