A model pillar study was conducted in which the engineering principles of dimensional analysis were applied to the problem of coal mine pillar design. The paper reviews the theory of similitude as applied to the model pillar study conducted in the investigation. An example solution of a design problem is included to indicate how the results of the study may be used as a first approximation in the design of coal mine pillars. The design of mine pillars for adequate support with minimum loss of valuable raw materials has always presented a problem to the mining engineer. Most often, for lack of a better method, past practice has influenced the design of new mine pillars. This process has always left doubt as to the safety factor of the pillars. The work presented in this paper is an initial attempt toward adapting the engineering principles of dimensional analysis to the problem of pillar design in underground mines. The use of the dimensional analysis technique is advantageous because all the variables associated with the problem are considered, and by systematic analysis the relative influence of each variable is determined. The model material utilized in this study was taken from the Helena seam of the Cahaba coal field located in central Alabama. The research study was sponsored by The Southern Electric Generating Co. as part of an over-all rock mechanics investigation of the Helena seam area. THEORY OF SIMILITUDE Model analysis is used extensively in engineering today, particularly in the solution of design problems that defy the classical methods of analysis. Such problems arise when materials with a nonlinear stress-strain relationship are involved, when geo- metric boundaries are difficult to define in simple form, when strains become large, or when partial failure occurs. All of these difficulties usually exist in pillar design problems. Those principles which underlie proper design and construction of models, and the interpretation of test results, comprise the theory of similitude. That is, the theory of similitude includes a consideration of the conditions under which the behavior of two separate entities or systems will be similar, and the techniques of accurately predicting behavior of one from observation of the other. The theory of similitude may be developed by dimensional analysis. Dimensional analysis, as a powerful analytical tool, is developed from a consideration of the dimensions in which each of the important quantities involved in a phenomenon is expressed. It is based on two axioms: 1) Absolute numerical equality of quantities may exist only when the quantities are similar qualitatively. 2) The ratio of the magnitudes of two like quantities are dependent on the units used in their measurement, provided that the same units are used for evaluating each. Dimensional analysis, developed from these two axioms, differs from other types of analysis in that it is based solely on the relationships that must exist among the pertinent variables because of their dimensions, rather than on the relationship of natural laws. In itself, dimensional analysis ~rovides qualitative, rather than quantitative relationships, but when it is combined with experimental procedures, it may be made to supply quantitative results and accurate prediction equations. APPLICATION OF THEORY The design of an adequate mine pillar requires the determination of a design equation and the selection of a dimensional system with which to work. Since force plays an important part in the design of mine support, the FLT (force, length, time) system has been used. The advent of the space age and its promise of interplanetary flight has prompted new ideas for propulsion systems that will allow maximum energy with minimum fuel weight. The use of cesium as the source of energy for such rocket flights has been found desirable. Theoretical efficiency of a rocket fuel is measured in terms of specific impulse, defined as the number of pounds of thrust per pound of propellant consumed per second. Specific impulse is usually expressed in seconds (the number of seconds for which one pound of fuel would produce one pound of thrust) although it is really a measure of total energy, not of power. The most sophisticated chemical fuels have a specific impulse of 300 to 400 sec; liquid hydrogen heated by nuclear reactor has a specific impulse of 1000 to 1200 sec. Specific impulses as high as 20,000 sec, however, are theoretically attainable with the ion rocket, in which free cesium ions are accelerated across a voltage drop and ejected at high velocity.' Characteristics of the system have been sketched by Boden.2 The desirable properties of an ion propellant are: 1) low ionization potential, 2) low boiling point, and 3) high atomic weight. Alkali metals best fulfill these requirements, and Table I indicates the superiority of cesium. The use of heavy complex ions such as UCl3 is ruled out by their instability and other disadvantages.' Despite its enormous superiority in specific impulse, the ion rocket is inherently low-powered, capable of very small acceleration. Application of ion propulsion will be limited to large rockets and spaceships on missions requiring powered flight for weeks or months and employing a separate chemical propulsion system for escape from the earth's atmosphere where power requirements are large but of brief duration. For example, Kraemer and Larson3 considered the case of an unmanned 25,000-lb pay-load placed in a 300-mile orbit by chemical rockets, proceeding thence by ion propulsion to the vicinity of Mars, where it would go into orbit once again. Calculations provide for 8500 lb of cesium for such a voyage. The question of whether such quantities of cesium will be readily available to the space program does not appear to have been considered by geologists and mining engineers. Present Production and Uses Literature on industrial applications of cesium is scanty. The metal is used in scintillation counters, photocells, infra-red detection devices, and as a "getter" in low-voltage vacuum tubes. Production is sporadic and total figures are not published, but the annual consumption is measured in pounds rather than in tons. The few pollucite deposits known, small as they are, can easily supply the present limited demand for gram or pound lots of cesium. Until recently the price of cesium was $2 to $4 per gram, but according to Chemical Engineering, cesium salts are now available at $13 to $27.50 per lb. Geochemical Distribution As a large alkali ion, the cesium ion accompanies potassium in geological processes and tends to be concentrated in the latest crystallizing fractions of potassium minerals in much the same manner as rubidium. Most of the cesium in igneous rocks, therefore, is in the micas and potash feldspars of granites, and especially in granitic pegmatites. The cesium content rises markedly in the micas of the late by-drothermal replacement stage in complex pegmatite~.' Typically, cesium is only 0.5 to 0.01 times as abundant as rubidium in potassium minerals. Rb', with a radius of 1.47 A, is close enough in size to K' (1.33 A) so that rubidium forms no minerals of its own. Cs+ is so large (1.67 A) that only small concentrations can be taken up in potassium minerals; when cesium is present in solution in larger concentration it forms the mineral pollucite, Cs3-Na2A17Si17O48.3H2O, which is known only in pegmatites. Design features and operating methods of ASARCO's new unit for the continuous melting and casting of tough pitch copper at Perth Amboy are described. Preliminary studies made for determinitzg economic feasibility and design details are also presented. Cathodes are preheated with oil and melted in an electric furnace at 40-ton per hr rate, from whence the molten copper is fed simultaneously to the wire bar casting wheel and the continuous casting of cakes and billets. In the early 1950's the copper refining furnaces at ASARCO's Perth Amboy plant reached a point where major expenditures would have to be made for replacement of the furnaces and the auxiliary equipment. The problem was whether to continue with the standard reverberatory furnaces or to consider continuous melting in electric furnaces. Reverberatory furnaces have been used for years in the copper industry and for some 50 years at the Perth Amboy plant. Reverberatory melting practice, however, imposes certain restrictions. The state of stress in the region where core discing initiates has been investigated through the use of three-dimensional photoelastic models and the results of this study have been compared with those of a previous investigation of rock models. This comparison showed that discing initiates at a point of maximum shear stress, but that the magnitude of the shear stress, as determined photoelastically, is much larger than the shear strength of the rock as deter-mined from conventional triaxial testing. Moreover the shear stress required to produce discing is not constant, but depends on the applied stress field. Possible explanations for these effects are included in this article. In both exploration core drilling and overcore drilling to determine the stress in rock, occasional sections of the core obtained are broken into a series of discs.I* This discing phenomenon has been investigated in the laboratory to ascertain the state of stress required to produce it. The objective of the study was to obtain information that would make it possible to approximate the state of stress in subsurface rock from which disced cores are obtained. Referred to as the discing test, this laboratory study was conducted to determine the applied axial and radial loads required to produce discing in cylinders of rock from several sources. The dimensions of these cylinders are given in Fig. 1. Discing was produced by first applying an axial load to the cylinder and then diamond drilling the core along its axis. The radial load was then incrementally increased until discing initiated. The discs fractured or ruptured* on surfaces approximately normal to the axis of the core (planes A, B, C, D, E, Fig. 2). In many instances, the bottommost disc fractured before the drill had advanced past the points F and F', cre- ating a mush room-shaped fracture surface FEF'. Alternatively, it was also found that the same shaped fracture surface could be created by first drilling in an unloaded core to some point, say F and F', and then triaxially loading the core until fracture occurred on the plane FEF'. Jaeger and cook4 produced similar fracture surfaces in specimens subjected only to a radial biaxial load. From these laboratory studies and observations made in the field, it can be inferred that fracture or rupture initiates in the proximity of the lowest point in the kerf area, (at F and F', Fig. 2) and that the fracture or rupture surface progresses inward from this point. The experiments described above, however, do not provide any information as to the state of stress at the point at which fracture or rupture initiates. In the investigation discussed in the following sections, a three-dimensional photoelastic analysis was conducted to determine the stress distribution in the proximity of the kerf area of a triaxially loaded plastic (epoxy) cylinder containing a short section of core.

It is delightful to read a technical paper like that of J. E. Johnson, The Effect of High Carbon on the Quality of Charcoal-Iron, presented in October, 1912, at the Cleveland meeting of the American Institute of Mining Engineers.' The clear, simple, and straightforward manner in which he describes his experiments and results makes you feel as if you had been, so to speak, at his elbow during the course of his investigations, while his method of procedure is so rational that you can fairly anticipate each step in the logical sequence of the tests performed. The following notes suggested by Mr. Johnson's paper are presented here in the hope that they may help, if only a mite, towards the final solution of a problem of considerable scientific and industrial importance. Physical Properties of Cast-Iron us. Its Ultimate Composition. Mr. Johnson writes that " an investigation along the lines of consumption showed that different irons have different characters totally independent of their analyses," and he declares that " the presence or absence of these elements [meaning carbon, phosphorus, silicon, and manganese] alone will not account for all, scarcely for a half, of the facts which have long been known." He further tells us that some foundries have " proved, by the most irrefutable tests, that they could take a certain iron of a given analysis and produce certain results," while with " another iron of the same analysis they could not produce these results at all." I feel confident that every experienced and thinking metallurgist will readily believe Mr. Johnson's statements and will share his views in regard to the hopelessness of inferring the

UTAH has enormous deposits of high-grade bituminous coal. The United States Geological Survey estimates that there are 13,130 sq. mi. of land in Utah known to contain workable coal and these extensive fields contain 196,000,000,000 tons of coal. Growth in population and development of industry in the intermountain and Pacific coast regions will in time give Utah a place with the great coal producing states of the country. Even today, faced by adverse conditions in competition with cheap fuel oil from southern California, water-power throughout the western states in general, and comparatively high freight rates to its distant markets, the Utah coal industry is notable in many respects. In recent years, Utah has led the United States both in the percentage of its mines in class 1, mines producing more than 200,000 tons a year, and in average production per man per day, which was 6.01 tons in 1921. In 1956 the discovery of nickel on Jumbo Mountain, Snohomish County, Washington, focused attention on this part of the Cascade Range, far more renowned for its timber than for its mineral resources. Hand specimens assaying as high as 13 pct Ni encouraged Discovery Mines Inc. of Mount Vernon, Wash., to stake 12 claims in Township 31 North, Range 9 East of the Willamette Meridian. The property was leased to Climax Molybdenum Co. in January 1957. Trenching, sampling, and geologic studies were carried out during the late summer of 1957 when most of the snow had disappeared. Although the deposits are only about four miles south of the logging town of Darrington and about two miles. as the crow flies, southeast of the end of a good gravel road from that town, all camp supplies and equipment were air-dropped, owing to the extremely rugged nature of the terrain. GEOLOGY The rocks of Jumbo Mountain comprise a series of folded Tertiary sediments forming a belt one half to three quarters of a mile wide, trending northwest about parallel to the strike of the beds. This belt is sandwiched between two extensive in-trusives—gabbro on the northeast and quartz dio-rite on the southwest—and has been intruded by dikes of fresh and serpentinized dunite. Shear zones follow many of the dunite-sedimentary rock contacts, and in these the nickel mineralization is concentrated. A few transverse faults offset the sediments and ultrabasics. Sedimentary Rocks: Two kinds of quartzite make up the greater part of the sedimentary section. One is dark purplish gray, very fine-grained, and thin-bedded; the other is light gray to white, medium-grained, and well-bedded. Locally the light-colored quart lites contain grit and conglomerate horizons, rich in pebbles of white chert and very fine-grained quartzite. Intercalations of dark argillites near the summit of the mountain give many of the cliffs a striking banded appearance. Dark gray to black, aphanitic, thin-bedded argillites occur throughout the entire sedimentary belt. Beds vary from a few inches to a few tens of feet thick and some, near the summit, contain numerous fossile (willow?) leaves. Only the thicker beds were mapped. The sediments are quite fresh on the northeastern side of the belt and become more metamorphosed (hornfelsed) toward the southwestern side. Brown biotite is present in the metasediments in increasing amounts as the quartz diorite is approached. Near the intrusion, porphyroblasts of plagioclase, up to 1 in. across, testify to the soaking of sedimentary rocks by solutions emanating from the quartz diorite. Most of the sediments mapped lie along the southwestern limb of an anticline, the axis of which follows the crest of the mountain and plunges at a low angle to the northwest.

THE minerals that collectively are known as chromite form an isomorphous series of the general formula (Mg,Fe) 0. (Cr,Al,Fe) 203. So wide is the range in chemical composition in this group that chrome ore consisting entirely of the mineral chromite may range from less than 30 pct to more than 60 pct Cr203. The most comprehensive published data on the chemical com- position of chromite are by Stevens,62 who made complete analyses of 52 samples of chromite concentrate from many localities in North, Cen- [ ] tral, and South America. These samples were mechanically purified to remove associated silicates and might be regarded as the cleanest chromite that could be obtained by any mechanical milling process. Fig 1 shows the predominant zone of isomorphism, within the triangular prism of composition defined by the mineralogical end members of the series, wherein his analyzed samples fell.

There are many methods for determining the meridian, but all of those in common use involve at least two separate observations, one for latitude and one for azimuth. Such observations made upon a south star at any hour are open to the objection of possible inaccuracy due to ignorance of the absolute refraction, and also to slow change in the altitude of the star when near the meridian. The method of observing a circum-polar star at elongation. besides requiring a separate observation for latitude, is open to the serious objection that clouds may obscure the star at the critical moment. Moreover, a tedious wait for the star to come to elongation is sometimes necessary. Many of us can recall 'long, cold, weary vigils, waiting for Polaris to reach elongation. For observing a circumpolar star at any hour, not only the latitude, but also the true time, must be known. This it is practically impossible to obtain, except in regions reached by the telegraph, and usually then one has to know the longitude also, in order to reduce " standard time" to " local time." The results obtained by this method, when the star is at culmination, are not very good, unless the true local time is absolutely known. The methods of obtaining the nleridian from the sun, by means of a solar attachment, or by direct observation, while good, are not absolute, by reason of refraction, change in declination of the sun, and small change in vertical angle, when the sun is near the meridian. For these two methods, latitude, time, and approximate longitude have to be known. In the method here described, only one observation is needed, and from it are computed azimuth, latitude, aud sidereal time. In other words, one call observe a circumpolar star—Polaris

It is said by some that the occurrence of a deposit of sulphide of antimony in Southwestern Arkansas has been known for fifteen or twenty years. Whether or not such is the case I am not prepared to say, but I am not able to find any record of such a discovery, or any analysis of antimony ore obtained from that section, published at so early a period. The present discoveries, that seem to be attracting some attention, date back to the winter of 1873-74. At that time a vein of ore was found by Mr. Robert Wolf, in honor of whom the vein was named, and still is called, "the Wolf lode." At the time of the discovery the ore was unknown to the prospector, and its composition was not thoroughly understood in that locality until samples were sent to several analytical chemists, who pronounced it sulphide of antimony—stibnite. Since the discovery of this ore there have been three mines opened, and a number of interesting minerals of the antimonial series have been found. I have had an unusually good opportunity to collect specimens from these mines; and it is owing to the constant inquiry concerning the character of these ores that I have collected for publication the results of quite a number of analyses, sufficient I trust to clearly point out their composition. This is one of the few localities in the United States where antimony ore is found in workable quantities ; I say workable quantities, because two different shipments of ore have been made to English reduction works, and in both cases excellent returns were made. The discovery of these deposits will, it is hoped, give rise to a prosperous and remunerative industry at no distant day, and when fully developed they may yield ore in sufficient quantity to supply the regulus for the home demand, thus adding wealth not only to those interested, but also to the State of Arkansas. The three mines are situated in the northern part of Sevier County, and may be reached by the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway to Fulton, thence by wagon-road to Columbus, Nashville, Centre Point, and to the mines. This paper presents a method of predicting the recovery and performance of a five-spot steam injection project, in which a realistic approach to pattern sweepout efficiencies is made. Published methods for radial systems were modified for the five-spot pattern by approximating the stream lines with straight lines radiating from the injection well and then converging to the producing well. In each radial segment, the position of the steam front and the temperature profile ahead of the steam front were determined by heat balance equations, which included an estimation of heat losses to surrounding formations. The location of the saturations behind the cold water front was determined from a Buckley-Leverett solution to the material balance equation. Results from this program show steamflood recovery in a five-spot pattern to be considerably less than that predicted for true linear or radial flow systems. For a specific reservoir containing 900-cp oil, a steamflood in a purely radial flow system was predicted to recover more than 75 percent of the original oil in place when 2 PV of water had been injected as steam. A five-spot steamflood with otherwise identical properties was predicted to recover 10 percent of the original oil in place when 0.15 PV of water had been injected as steam and to recover almost no oil thereafter. A cold water five-spot flood in this system was predicted to recover approximately W percent of the oil in place with I PV of water injected. For a five-spot pattern in an example reservoir with 10-cp oil, steam injection similarly showed lower ultimate recovery than water injection but no improvement in recovery rule. Introduction The thermal recovery method considered in this study is steam injection in a five-spot pattern. Pattern steam injection has been given little attention in the past, possibly because of some rather obvious disadvantages. Unless steam temperature is maintained throughout the entire swept area, the process will revert to simple waterflood with all heat being lost prior to reaching the oil bank. Also, the oil viscosity reduction takes place near the steam front and not around the producing wellbore, so that low producing rates must still be endured. This is the reason for the success of the steam stimulation, or cyclic injection, in which the fluids are produced from the same well used for injection. On the other hand, steamflooding can offer some advantages. Oil displacement is by four methods: (1) mechanical displacement by the condensed water, (2) viscosity reduction of the crude oil, (3) swelling of the crude oil, and (4) distillation of the crude oil in the steam zone. Although dependent upon the crude, laboratory experiments have shown displacements up to 80 percent by steamflooding. In addition, steam is a good heat transport medium, since it is cheap and has a high heat content. Previous Investigations Previous publications have reported methods for predicting recovery in a steamflood for linear and radial systems. Since no pattern sweep efficiency is taken into consideration, the recovery even from a radial system must be greater than from more realistic geometries such as the very common five-spot patterns. Probably the broadest coverage is given by Willman who reported experimental results and offered a method of predicting recovery for a radial flow system. They concluded that both hot water and steam injection recover more oil than an ordinary waterflood, and that steam injection could yield recoveries "as much as 100 percent greater than by water flood." They also concluded that both the heat requirements for a reservoir and the residual oil remaining in the reservoir after steam injection were independent of the amount of oil originally in place, that short exploitation times were desirable, and that a high percentage of net sand in the reservoir with a high initial oil saturation was desirable. The method assumes that the flood occurs in three concentric cylindrical zones: (1) an inner steam zone, (2) a central hot water zone, and (3) an outer cold waterflood zone. Displacement in the steam zone is based on laboratory-determined residual oil saturations while the hot water and cold water zones use the conventional Buckley-Leverett equations. INVESTIGATIONS by the Bureau of Mines of deposits containing strategic minerals were authorized by what has become known as the Strategic Materials Act (Public No. 117, 76th Congress, Chapter 190. 1st Session). A later act providing an appropriation for the first of four years through which the investigations are to be conducted was signed on Aug. 9, 1939. No time has since been lost as seven field projects already are being vigorously prosecuted, and two others no doubt soon will be in course of execution. Project engineers were at their stations within two days after funds had been made available. Crews have been hired; equipment and supplies have been purchased; 5 bids for diamond drilling have been obtained and the drilling has started base camps have been established: ground has been cleared; and several thousand feet of trenching, test-pitting, and sampling have already been done. At the Reno Experiment Station of the Bureau, a special metallurgical laboratory has been provided to make assays, analyses, and tests upon samples of ores from all projects under investigation.

Any discussion of outside support to Latin American mineral industries must concede at once the pre-eminent role of U. S. industry and business. American capital has developed the great copper resources of Chile and Peru, the lead-zinc of Peru and Mexico, the bauxite of Surinam and Jamaica, the petroleum and iron ore of Venezuela. American consumers have provided the market for their products. U. S. companies operating south of the border have trained Latin American geologists, engineers, chemists, and skilled labor—including metal, mineral, and fuel technicians—to new and greater competence. The industrial demands of World War II drastically altered world economics and concepts of U. S. foreign mineral requirements. In this country discovery of vital mineral resources fell far behind the alarming depletion rates, and there was new appreciation of the actual and potential importance of the world's less extensively explored areas. During the war and afterward, the task of supplying the nation's mineral requirements became greater than private industry could carry alone, and the Government assumed a position of continuing support. In Latin America, as elsewhere, this support applies in three categories: banking, procurement, and technical assistance. The first two are now generally accepted as necessary Government functions; the third has often been misunderstood and misinterpreted, although it has given rise to legitimate controversy. There have been major accomplishments in all three categories, as well as some errors of judgment. Since the beginning of World War 11, U. S. Government financing, procurement, and technical assistance have been applied on a large scale to a wide range of commodities and services throughout the free world. The present discussion—under the separate headings mentioned—will concern only the support related to a single industrial group in a single geographic area. During the War Federal banking was conducted on an emergency scale by temporary agencies created to meet the abnormal circumstances. Unfortunately, there are no readily available data on these activities that would permit evaluating loans and credits extended for mineral projects in Latin America. The only agency operating in this field since World War II is the Export-Import Bank, under its own authority and to some extent from credits authorized by the Office of Defense Mobilization. The Bank can offer more capital—on more favorable terms—than is available from most Latin American banks, and its staff of engineers evidently can appraise loan applications more favorably than commercial banks in this country are willing to do. The risks seem to be justified, as defaults have been well under 1 pct of total loans. From V-J day 1945 to the end of 1957, mineral loans to Latin America have been authorized for projects totaling $541.63 million in eight countries. In order of magnitude of credits, they have been made to Brazil, Peru, Chile, Mexico, Argentina, Venezuela, Guatemala, and Bolivia. In order of magnitude by industries. they are for development and expansion of steel mills, copper, manganese, nitrate plants, iron ore, zinc plants, sulfur plants, cement plants, tungsten, coal, and lead. Loan Distribution: By far the largest loans have been $307.9 million for iron and steel projects in Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Argentina, and Peru: $100.4 for developing the great low-grade copper deposits of southern Peru; and $55.3 million for developing manganese deposits in the Territory of Amapa, Brazil. Others range from $20.8 million for a zinc smelter in central Peru to $19 thousand for iron-mine trucking equipment in Chile. It has been noted that 59 pct of the loans have been to foreign companies, 14 pct to companies of mixed foreign and American capital, and 27 pct to American mining companies. THESE observations of the metal-working industries of Europe are based on a three months' tour of eight countries of Europe, in which 75 industrial establishments were visited in England, France, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Italy, Austria and Switzerland during the summer of 1927. Since the Western Electric Co. is a large consumer of copper and brass, these industries were of particular interest and differences in practices were of keen interest to us.

IT is said by some that the occurrence of a deposit of sulphide of antimony in Southwestern Arkansas has been known for fifteen or twenty years. Whether or not such is the case I am not prepared to say, but I am not able to find any record of such a discovery, or any analysis of antimony ore obtained from that section, published at so early a period. The present discoveries, that seem to be attracting some attention, date back to the winter of 1873-74. At that time a vein of ore was found by Mr. Robert Wolf, in honor of whom the vein was named, and still is called, "the Wolf lode." At the time of the discovery the ore was unknown to the prospector, and its composition was not thoroughly understood in that locality until samples were sent to several analytical chemists, who pronounced it sulphide of antimony-stibnite. Since the discovery of this ore there have been three mines opened, and a number of interesting minerals of the antimonial series have been found. I have had an unusually good opportunity to collect specimens from these mines; and it is owing to the constant inquiry concerning the character of these ores that I have collected for publication the results of quite a number of analyses, sufficient I trust to clearly point out their composition. This is one of the few localities in the United States where antimony ore is found in workable quantities; I say workable quantities, because two different shipments of ore have been made to English reduction works, and in both cases excellent returns were made. The discovery of these deposits will, it is hoped, give rise to a prosperous and remunerative industry at no distant day, and when fully developed they may yield ore in sufficient quantity to supply the regulus for the home demand, thus adding wealth not only to those interested, but also to the State of Arkansas. The three mines are situated in the northern part of Sevier County, and may be reached by the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway to Fulton, thence by wagon-road to Columbus, Nashville, Centre Point, and to the mines. l. INTRODUCTION. THE last few years have shown an increasing interest in the subject of beneficiating iron-ores -in all iron-producing countries. In the United States, this movement has been slower than in certain parts of Europe, for the obvious reason that the abundance and relative cheapness of the Lake Superior iron ores has hindered the development of enterprises for the preparation of low-grade ores. Gradually, however, conditions have changed. The world's consumption of iron is increasing enormously. Being in 1900 about 40,000,000 tons, in 1910 ii was already 60,000000; and there is no reason to doubt that for the near future the increase in iron-consumption will continue at the same rapid rate, especially with, the development of China, certain parts of Africa, and other regions which have hardly been touched as yet by modern industrialism. It is. therefore, not surprising that apprehension is felt that the known available iron-ore resources of the world are gradually being depleted. Signs of this feeling are the recent investigation, under the direction of the U. S. Geological Survey, of the iron-ore resources of the United States, and the estimate presented to the last International Geological Congress, at Stockholm, Sweden, of the iron-ore resources of the world. These investigations have emphasized the fact that the known high-grade ore-deposits are limited in extent, and will, at a not distant future, be exhausted, compelling the iron industry to depend for raw material on the enormous deposits of low-grade ores which are distributed over almost all the world. The discovery of new deposits of high-grade ore, in countries not yet thoroughly explored, will not materially change this prospect. Of course, the part which such new deposits will play in the future cannot be forecast. The difficulty and cost of transportation will probably exclude many of them from use at the present centers of the iron industry.

The writing that is effective is woven with a fine texture into an agreeable pattern; it is free from knots, loose threads, and stray fluff. The instrument that weaves this literary fabric, whether it produce a homely sock or a lordly tapestry, a simple story or a learned 'Itreatise, is a disciplined intelligence, as sure as a steel needle, as precise as a swift loom. The simile breaks down at this point, for the product of the pen is instinct with the human spirit and therefore transcends in beauty anything made by a mere machine. If words are to be woven into eloquent meaning, they must be well knit. Upon the relation of words to each other and of groups of words to other groups, known as phrases, clauses, and sentences, depends the success of writing as a means of trans¬mitting thought from man' to man. To be understood beyond question, you should know not only what your words denote but how to build your sentences; you must not only choose your words aright but construct your sentences properly. A sentence is a combination of words that makes complete sense; it says something about something. ' A clause is a subordinate sentence or a sentence within a sentence. A phrase is a group of words without a predicate; it makes sense, but not complete sense. For example: I shall wait for a few minutes before I go home: The whole statement is a sentence; "I shall wait" and "before I go home" are clauses; "for a few minutes" is an adverbial phrase. The orderly arranging of words and of combinations of words is called `syntax'; and from the original Greek form, ouvaeis (suntaxis), is derived the Greek name for an editor,

The apparatus was of a modified Sieverts type1&apos;2 with a reaction tube designed to function also as the cell component of an oxygen pressure gage. The reaction tube assembly is shown in Fig. 1 and described in Table I. The main body is a 1-in.-OD 15 mol pct calcia-stabilized zirconia tube. The ground-glass joint, g, the male part of which carried a prism for optical pyrometer use, was connected to the remainder of the Sieverts apparatus. The calibration of the cell (at its 1000°K operating temperature) for internal oxygen pressures (PO2in) in the range 0.2 to 10 9 atm was made against internal air pressures measured by mercury manometer and McLeod gage. At very low po2in values down to l<Tn atm the performance was checked by comparing pQ calculated from electromotive force measurement when the apparatus was filled with a) pure CO gas and b) a CO-CO2 mixture of the ratio CO-CO2 = 1:0.398, with Po, values calculated from the equilibrium constants of the following reactions at 1000°K:
